From Publishers Weekly
The third collaboration between bestseller Francis and son Felix (after Silks), a taut crime thriller, features an especially sympathetic hero. Bookmaker Ed Talbot is struggling with his wife's mental illness, even as technology threatens to give the big bookmaking outfits an insurmountable advantage over his small family business. Soon after a man shows up at Ascot and identifies himself as Ed's father, Peter, whom Ed believed long dead, a thug demanding money stabs Peter to death. Ed is in for even more shocks when he learns his father was the prime suspect in his mother's murder—and that Peter's killing, rather than a random act of violence, may be linked to a mysterious electronic device used in some horse-racing fraud. Ed must juggle his amateur investigations into past and present crimes with his demanding family responsibilities. Though some readers may find the ending overly pat, the authors make bookmaking intelligible while easily integrating it into the plot. (Aug.)

About the Author
Dick Francis (pictured with his son Felix Francis) was born in South Wales in 1920. He was a young rider of distinction winning awards and trophies at horse shows throughout the United Kingdom. At the outbreak of World War II he joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot, flying fighter and bomber aircraft including the Spitfire and Lancaster.

He became one of the most successful postwar steeplechase jockeys, winning more than 350 races and riding for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. After his retirement from the saddle in 1957, he published an autobiography, The Sport of Queens, before going on to write more than forty acclaimed books, including the New York Times bestsellers Even Money and Silks.

A three-time Edgar Award winner, he also received the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association’s Cartier Diamond Dagger, was named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, and was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2000. He died in February 2010, at age eighty-nine, and remains among the greatest thriller writers of all time.

Felix Francis (pictured with his father, Dick Francis), a graduate of London University, spent seventeen years teaching A-level physics before taking on an active role in his father’s career. He has assisted with the research of many of the Dick Francis novels, including Shattered, Under Orders, and Twice Shy, which drew on Felix’s experiences as a physics teacher and as an international marksman. He is coauthor with his father of the New York Times bestsellers Dead Heat, Silks, and Even Money. He lives in England.

From The Washington Post
From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by Michael Dirda Sometimes, after a long time away, you revisit your old home town or college campus and discover that the favorite pizzeria of your highly caloric youth is still in business. Man, were those mushroom and pepperoni slices delicious! So, ignoring your cholesterol count, you order a large pizza, sit down with your favorite cold one and take a big mouthwatering bite. And are, inevitably, disappointed. No matter how good the pizza might be, it's no match for those pies of yesteryear. Some key ingredient seems to be missing, or the new owners have mucked about with the recipe, or maybe your own taste buds have grown more sophisticated. Nonetheless, you eat all eight slices anyway, and enjoy them. It's still pizza, after all. Just so, one can say of "Even Money" that it may not be up to the standards of "Nerve" or "Forfeit" or "Whip Hand" or "Reflex," but it's still a Dick Francis thriller. The key elements are all here: the horseracing milieu, the damaged hero, various moral dilemmas, the easygoing first-person narration, at least one scene of brutal violence, the presentation of a lot of information about some romantically arcane subject (e.g., wine, investment banking, photography) and, of course, a more or less happy ending. However, there's no getting around the fact that Dick Francis is nearly 90. He was born in 1920, piloted Spitfires during World War II for the Royal Air Force and spent the 1950s as one of Britain's leading jockeys, riding horses belonging to the Queen Mother. Only after his early retirement did he turn to writing fiction, starting with "Dead Cert" in 1962. But by producing a book a year up until 2000, Francis firmly established himself as a brand name, the purveyor of reliable, literate entertainment. In particular, his novels have always appealed to women -- and not only because of the horses in them, but also because his heroes are usually quietly attractive, sensitive men in their 30s burdened with guilt or otherwise psychologically wounded. The faint air of melancholy surrounding them adds an aura of almost Byronic romance. Usually, these troubled Dick Francis heroes find themselves caught up in righting an injustice or solving a mystery that affects their lives or the lives of people they care about. In most of his 40 or so novels, Francis does without a recurring character, with one exception: Sid Halley -- a onetime jockey who has lost an arm -- becomes a private investigator in "Odds Against" and is the hero of three subsequent novels, including "Whip Hand" and "Come to Grief," both of which received Edgar awards for best mystery of the year. Through most of his career, Francis relied on the help of his wife, Mary, who performed background research, provided a sounding board for possible plot developments and edited the final text. When she died, Francis stopped writing, apparently forever. But in 2005 he published a new Sid Halley novel called "Under Orders" and then in 2007 produced "Dead Heat," with the help of his younger son Felix. The two again collaborated on "Silks" last year and now again on "Even Money." Before joining his father in the family business, Felix Francis was an international-class marksman, the leader of expeditions to the Himalayas and the jungles of Borneo and a teacher of physics. The hero of "Even Money" is Ned Talbot, a 37-year-old bookmaker who inherited his grandfather's business. As the novel opens on a depressing day at the Ascot race course, Ned has already suffered more than his share of life's troubles. His parents were killed when he was a baby; his beloved wife, Sophie, has had bipolar disorder diagnosed; his grandmother is gaga in a nursing home; and his electronics-whiz assistant, Luca Mandini, is thinking of quitting. What's more, Ned feels increasingly pressured by the large-scale betting agencies that would dearly love to put him out of business and acquire his pitch position at the tracks. So it's not surprising when the bookmaker, observing a happy couple, says to himself: "I supposed I must have been that happy once." Well, this being a Francis novel, things have only just started to get rough for Ned Talbot. Before Chapter 1 ends, he will learn that his father is actually alive and involved with something deeply shady. By the end of Chapter 2, there will be an assault and a murder. And by the beginning of Chapter 6, Ned will discover a rucksack with a secret compartment tightly packed with 30,000 pounds in cash, a mysterious device that looks like a remote control, some counterfeit horse papers and "a small polythene bag containing what appeared at first to be ten grains of rice, but, on closer examination, were clearly man-made. They looked like frosted glass." This rucksack and its contents provide the main narrative engine of "Even Money." But Francis adds two other subplots of nearly equal importance, one focusing on Sophie's fragile mental health, especially when under stress, and the other involving some mysterious goings-on at the track: Lately, just before certain races, all cellphones and computers stop working for five minutes. As one would expect, by the climax of the novel all three plot lines are brought together. Though Ned worries about the hospitalized Sophie, constantly keeps on the lookout for a shifty-eyed, murderous man in a hoodie and increasingly questions what he knows about his own family's past, he never neglects his business. In the course of "Even Money," the Francises present an informal introduction to English bookmaking and horse-betting. Here, for instance, Ned talks about "punters" -- i.e., gamblers: "The most successful are those who know almost every horse in training. And they study the races every day. They learn, over time, which horses run consistently to form and which do not. They discover which horses prefer right-handed tracks and which do better left-handed, which jumpers like long run-ins and which short, and whether they are likely to win uphill finishes or flat ones. They know if a horse runs above or below par on firm or soft ground, and also what weight suits a particular horse and whether to keep away from it in handicaps when it's rated too highly. They know where each horse is trained, if it runs badly after long journeys in a horsevan and even if a particular horse tends to do better than its rivals in sunshine or in rain." And if punters know their horses, the riders and trainers know them even better. The great jockey Lester Piggott "was said to be able to recognize any horse he had ridden even when it was walking away from him in a rainstorm." Yet, despite all its seeming impossibility, Ned gradually realizes that some kind of horse-switching scam must lie behind the mysterious contents of the rucksack. Can Luca's electronics expertise help solve the mystery? While "Even Money" is an agreeable way to pass a few hours, it often feels soft and rather anemic, without real driving force. Nonetheless, the overall tone and sensibility are identifiably Franciscan, and longtime fans will enjoy taking a leisurely canter round a familiar track. But new readers who want to see Dick Francis at his best should pick up one or two of those early novels. They show why Kingsley Amis and Philip Larkin, among many others, so admired Francis's writing. After all, as any punter knows, a "Dead Cert" is a much better bet than "Even Money."

All bets are off
By H. Bala
Okay, I really need to stop regarding any further offerings from these co-authors as primarily Dick Francis novels. I haven't felt that vintage Francis touch since 1996's TO THE HILT, although UNDER ORDERS, his 2006 thriller and the first written since the passing of his dear wife Mary, did hearken to much of what made him such an engrossing read. But I'm guessing that it's actually his son and co-author Felix who's now doing the heavy lifting. And it's just not the same.

Bookies, apparently, rank so low in the vocational totem pole and are so universally despised that probably even lawyers poke fun at them. 37-year-old Ned Talbot is an independent bookmaker eking out a living in the sport of kings. In the vein of Francis's prototypical protagonists, Ned is unassuming, is self-restrained, is a bit remote. He's a decent bloke even if he's a bookie. And, as per norm to Francis's leading men, it takes sinister external forces to draw him out of his reserved shell.

The plot rapidly thickens. In the opening pages Ned Talbot's father, long believed to be deceased, shows up at the Royal Ascot races to confound Ned. Three hours later, a mugging and a stabbing later, Ned Talbot's father dies again, this time in real. For Ned, this is only the start of shady shenanigans. With his dying breath, his father had warned him: "Be very careful... of everyone." As he delves into the mystery of his father, Ned finds himself steeped in trouble, bewildered by enigmatic electronic devices he unearths and by an inexplicable rash of Internet and cell phone breakdowns at the races. Throw in, too, a rucksack full of money, and frightening characters who begin to shadow Ned.

It can't help but seep into his family life, and Ned's family life is more devastating than others'. As Ned keeps on digging, he learns that much of his early childhood had been based on lies, his father not what was initially assumed of him. And Ned's present personal straits are discouraging. Ned's wife Sophie has long suffered from dementia, and for the past decade she'd been in and out of mental institutions. Visiting times, for Ned, have always been a bittersweet thing. One of the things the authors did really right was to have Ned and Sophie's relationship provide the story's emotional anchor. Ned's dealings with the rest of the cast leave me more or less indifferent, although I felt that several characters were promising but underused: the callous Detective Chief Inspector and the warmer Detective Sergeant Murray. There's also Duggie, a savvy juvenile delinquent and also Ned's prospective new assistant (introduced way late in the book).

I'd assumed that Dick Francis, himself an ex-jockey, had covered just about every angle in British horse racing. But, yeah, the bookies. I don't go to the races at all, and I'm not much of a gambler, so, from that perspective, the authors enlighten on the particulars of sports bookmaking. Before picking up this book, I had no idea what punters were or about the competition that went on between the big gambling conglomerates versus the small-time bookies. But if you're not interested in numbers or gambling, there are passages in EVEN MONEY which may bore or befuddle.

Let me say this: If only EVEN MONEY weren't under the Dick Francis banner, I'd have been more charitable, less critical. But I expect so much of this writer who, with Terry Pratchett and Louis L'Amour, happens to be one of my all-time cherished writers. Francis's books had always been marked with charm and a sly humor, and I've always, always relished his practical thinking man sort of protagonists. I'm not as warmed by Ned Talbot, and I can't help but believe that it's because Felix Francis has taken up the reins and he just doesn't have the knack, the charm, the sly humor, the quiet swagger. Much like the collaboration between Anne McCaffrey and her son Todd tends to leave most readers lukewarm, Dick and Felix Francis do not create an improved brand.

EVEN MONEY is decent enough stuff but in no way does it rival the Francis classics. The narrative pace is sluggish. There's suspense, but not a sense of peril. Ned Talbot is aware that villains may drop in to pay him a visit at home, but he doesn't make one move to seek other lodgings or even arrange for protection. And then the guy moves in family members into his house! The few action sequences left me with that blah feeling. The characters hardly resonate. The ending is too pat. Something's missing.

Soul of a Bookie
By Miz Ellen
The odds are that mystery and suspense fans will love the latest installment from the word processor of Dick Francis and son. The mellowing influence of Felix Francis is to create sympathetic heroes who are less "take it on the chin and keep going" stoic types than ordinary good and decent men caught up in situations of violence. Ned Talbot is a racetrack bookie only because he grew up assisting his grandfather, the Talbot of "Trust Teddy Talbot".

Ned's an extremely likable guy, who sticks to his wife despite her chronic mental illness and worries that his capable, computer-savvy assistant will leave for a larger firm. The big off-track betting chains are putting pressure on his profits and he sometimes wonders if his unpopular profession is worth it.

Ned grew up believing that his parents were killed in a car crash, so when a man approaches him at the Ascot races, claiming to be his father, Ned does not believe it at first. But the stranger helps him haul all his equipment off the track and as the two of them are walking across the parking lot, an assailant leaps out of nowhere and knocks Ned down.

Ned was starting to believe the man really is his father Peter Talbot, so he is horrified when the assailant stabs his father and disappears. Is this a robbery gone wrong or something to do with his father's mysterious past?

Old-time fans of Francis will recognize the electrifying sound of the starting bell, as another Francis racetrack tale of skulduggery and mayhem is off and running. Ordinary guy Ned Talbot will be an odds-on favorite but the reader will be the real winner.

So disappointed!
By Gaby
This is the worst Dick Francis/Felix Francis book I have read. I have read every Dick Francis book written and have read all of the Dick/Felix ones as well.(None are as good as the old books although I liked Silks.) This book was disjointed, and really was bad. Usually I admire the heros in Francis books. I like them. This guy was not a hero in any sense. The main character lied - a lot. What did the girl in the black and white outfit have to do with anything? Someone wrote this one fast - too fast - and the plot was incoherent. I threw it across the room when I was done. A total waste of my time! The last time I will try to read Francis. But I did love the old books very much.

The always reliable Holland turns her attention to the ever-intriguing Eleanor of Aquitaine in this solid fictional biography of the consummate woman-behind-the-man. We meet the young Eleanor as the wife of Louis VII of France; however, this relationship is not enough to satisfy her feverishly grand ambitions. When she meets Henry D’Anjou at her husband’s court, sparks fly and the stage is set for one of the most remarkable unions in the annals of medieval history. Their passionate affair evolves into an elaborate game of cat and mouse as Eleanor, determined to win her freedom from Louis at any price while assisting Henry in securing his tenuous claim to the English throne, will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. Readers familiar with the legendary Eleanor of Aquitaine will enjoy the intriguing backstory Holland dishes out with a practiced hand. --Margaret Flanagan

A laser-like focus on one of the most pivotal years of Eleanor's life!
By Suzi Hough
Eleanor of Aquitaine was an amazing queen who reigned over two kingdoms, first France and later England. She lived to a grand old age, dying in her early eighties. Most of the previous books based on her life try to capture the entirety of it, and decades' worth of events fill the pages. Cecelia Holland takes a different approach in her latest novel, `The Secret Eleanor', narrowing her focus to one of the pivotal years in Eleanor's life. In the opening pages, Eleanor meets Henry, son of the Count of Anjou, and instantly falls in love (or is it her great lust for his power?) with him. They meet secretly, and plan to marry as soon as Eleanor can get out of her current marriage to the King of France. One of their assignations lands Eleanor in an uncomfortable situation, and she must use all of her cunning and the aid of her sister, Petronilla, to hide the secret from her enemies.

For the most part, the book focuses on the two sisters, Eleanor and Petronilla. There is such a sharp contrast between them. Petronilla, crushed by her husband's rejection of her, begins shy and demure, but events force her out of her shell and remind her that a failed marriage doesn't mean she's useless. Meanwhile, Eleanor is the picture of confidence and seductive power. She's used to getting what she wants, when she wants it. People bend over backwards to please her. When necessity forces Eleanor out of the limelight for a time, she's shocked to realize that she could easily be replaced by another woman. The jolt to Eleanor's confidence shatters her ability to trust even those closest to her.

We also see a bit of what life is like for those on the fringe of the royal court in the lives of a troubadour and his wife. They may sing for the nobility, but they are not of that class, and it's fun to see how this changes their outlook and actions.

I enjoyed this microscopic look at a brief period of Eleanor's life. Holland captured the power and allure of the legendary Queen while still capturing the flaws in her character. She also skillfully brings many of the minor characters in Eleanor's circle to life, creating lively individuals from figures who are little more than footnotes to history.

"She wondered if being weak in this world were not worse than sin."
By Luan Gaines
Holland's novel of Eleanor of Aquitaine focuses on the meeting of Eleanor and Henry, second son of the Count of Anjou, while Eleanor is still wife to the pious Louis VII of France. A beautiful woman with great appetite and brilliant political instincts, Eleanor finds in the decade younger Henry what is so lacking in her union with Louis, a marriage that has produced only two daughters in fifteen years. Suddenly, a new course is opened to Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine, fed by the spark of her volatile attraction to Henry, as dreams become plans and Henry plots to rule not only Normandy and Anjou, but England and Aquitaine, with Louis's queen at his side. Of course, political expediency intrudes, Holland setting the stage in 1151 for conflict and intrigue as Eleanor convinces Louis to agree to an annulment that he might wed another and bear sons.

And while Henry begins his quest for the throne of England in earnest after the untimely death of his father, Eleanor is bedeviled by a more serious dilemma, one that threatens her bright future at Henry's side. It is to her sister, Petronilla, that Eleanor turns in confidence, terrified of betrayal in the treacherous months between the release from Louis and Henry's embrace. Eleanor's beauty and acumen are hidden in the dusty halls of Louis's court. Without the aid of her sister, perhaps Eleanor would be doomed to a smaller role. But while the men near the king of France scheme to advance their own agendas, Eleanor begins only one of the many skirmishes that will define her life on the world stage, a woman equal in ambition to any man and often just as ruthless. But this is Eleanor in love, passionate, determined and filled with the glow of passion.

The author captures the political tension surrounding Louis's throne, Henry's greedy ambitions and Eleanor's aptitude for politics, even in the darkest days of her struggle to be with Henry. A woman who must survive by her wiles in a man's world, Eleanor is an extraordinary historical figure, as gifted as any man while burdened by the usual court prejudices against females. Before she can become Henry's fertile queen, she must outwit those in the French court who would see her remain at her husband's side or tucked away in a convent. Only the queen's women know her most intimate secrets, and the inscrutable Petronilla, but success hinges on the unraveling threads of loyalty. Great secrets beget treachery; this novel illustrates how easily a queen's plans may be turned to ashes. Luan Gaines/2010.

Horribly boring and micro look into Eleanor of Aquitane's life
By Amanda
This has been the year of Eleanor of Aquitane novels. No less than three novels have been published this year about the famous queen, so I was hoping that Cecelia Holland's The Secret Eleanor would stand out from the crowd. Eleanor is such a fascinating woman, but all of this year's Eleanor novels I've read so far have turned out to be boring. I had high hopes for The Secret Eleanor. I thought it could stand out from the pack, but it didn't. It just stayed flat.

In fact, I didn't even finish the book. Yeah, I pretty much never leave books unfinished, so that's pretty bad. First, The Secret Eleanor focuses on the events within just one year of the eventful Queen's life. Eleanor is struggling since she cannot bear King Louis of France a male heir, and Eleanor and Louis are considering getting an annulment. But Eleanor has a secret, she has a burning desire for the young Henry, son of the Count d'Anjou with a strong claim to the British throne. After an unfortunate decision, Eleanor becomes pregnant with Henry's child, putting the pending annulment and her possible marriage to Henry in jeopardy.

That's basically the entire book. While there is some discussion of French, British and Aquitane politics, much of the book is spent hiding Eleanor's pregnancy and waiting for her to have the baby. That's it. There are a few subplots that Holland tried to weave into the story, such as the musicians Claire and Thomas and Henry's struggle against his brother Geoffrey, but they either didn't go anywhere or didn't seem to have much of an impact on the overall plot. Not only was it confusing and jarring to suddenly swap between first-person viewpoints, but there was so much that could have and should have been cut out. Perhaps Holland could have talked about more events in Eleanor's life?

While I wouldn't discourage readers from picking this book up, just be warned that it's very simple, linear and not much happens -oh, and there's a quite a bit of romance too.

Hungry: A Mother and Daughter Fight Anorexia, by Sheila Himmel, Lisa Himmel

A unique eating-disorder memoir written by a mother and daughter.

Unbeknownst to food critic Sheila Himmel-as she reviewed exotic cuisines from bistro to brasserie- her daughter, Lisa, was at home starving herself. Before Sheila fully grasped what was happening, her fourteen-year-old with a thirst for life and a palate for the flavors of Vietnam and Afghanistan was replaced by a weight-obsessed, antisocial, hundredpound nineteen-year-old. From anorexia to bulimia and back again-many times-the Himmels feared for Lisa's life as her disorder took its toll on her physical and emotional well-being.

Hungry is the first memoir to connect eating disorders with a food-obsessed culture in a very personal way, following the stumbles, the heartbreaks, and even the funny moments as a mother-daughter relationship-and an entire family-struggles toward healing.

False Advertising
By Robin Sacks
This book should really be titled " Sheila Himmel's Illustrious Career and how her obsession with it created her daughter's sense of alienation". Lest you think I am generally one to judge, I need to tell you that I run a peer-to-peer support group, at no charge, for parents whose teens are in therapeutic boarding schools. By simple objective standards, if you count the pages talking about Sheila's career, and compare that to the number of pages spent talking about her daughter's issues, you'll quickly understand what I mean. The comment that upset me the most was Sheila's revelation of the small dress size she wore when she attended the James Beard Award ceremonies. It stands as a stark indictment of her repeated claims that she didn't obsess about appearance. During the book she repeatedly talks about Lisa's behavior during Sheila's job-related forays into eating out. Where are the pages about this family doing ANYTHING not food related? Never a trip to the movies, the beach, or simply a quiet night of playing board games or reading together as a family. When there is a choice between supporting LIsa and advancing her career, by her own admission Sheila chooses career every time, then justifies it in her book. I have read outstanding books written by parents who really cared and really shared what they went through when their teen's life fell apart. For an excellent Mother-Daughter book, this one dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, read Kritsina Wandzliak and Constance Curry's book The Lost Years. Or try Beautiful Boy, David Sheff's poignant story of his teen son's meth addiction.

a great contribution to the plethora of eating disorder memoirs out there
By Heather O'Roark
I have to admit, I'm completely fascinated by eating disorders. Fascinated in a car-crash type of way: I want to learn everything I can about them, I can't look away from any literature I can find on the subject, but the entire idea of starving oneself makes me so sad and almost sick to my stomach. So when I was approached about reviewing Hungry, I absolutely jumped at the chance.

This book is different from most eating disorder memoirs (and trust me, there are a LOT out there, some better and more interesting than others) in the fact that it's mostly the story of the anorexic's mother, Sheila. Lisa, the girl who suffers from anorexia, did co-write the book, but the memoir is much more Sheila's than her daughter's. And I have to say that it was quite interesting to read about anorexia from a mother's point of view. No parent wants to see their child hurt or suffering in any way, and this feeling must be compounded by about a billion when it's your child who is actually doing the harm to him/herself. Hungry perfectly illuminated this feeling - Sheila had to watch while her daughter starved herself for years, and she was completely unable to do anything that would help Lisa get better.

I definitely appreciated that Lisa had a voice in this memoir, too, because it was very interesting to read about certain periods of her life from Sheila's point of view, then read right away how Lisa experienced those same situations. At the time of the book's publishing, it was said that Lisa was in recovery from her eating disorder, and it was made clear that she is not "recovered" fully - she stated that she absolutely still has food issues, and has to make a conscious effort to not go back to disordered eating. I liked that she was so candid about her disorder; I think it is a help for women and girls who struggle with food issues to know that even someone who is "recovered" has to really work at being healthy. The disorder doesn't just go away, it's something that it is always a part of life if you have it, and I am glad that Lisa Himmel made this very clear in the book.

Hungry has a lot going for it. It is a super honest portrayal of one family's experience with an eating disorder, and because of its truth there is are a lot of heartwarming and funny moments in this book. It's not all doom and gloom, the Himmels seem like an extremely close and loving family and that really shows through in the book. I enjoyed this memoir and I finished it feeling close to Lisa and Sheila, and hoping for Lisa to get better and stay better - from what she wrote, it sounds like that is finally happening for her.

A moving mother-daughter story
By reading widely
Hungry is heartbreaking, funny, and hard to put down. It's a wonder to have a book on the troubles that beset families (the kind of books so many parents pick up, whether or not our children have the particular issues dealt with in the book -- here it's extreme eating disorders)that is so well written. The mother involved is an award-winning journalist, and it shows.
If you happen to live with someone with eating disorders, you will take away a tremendous amount of insight and useful information. If you don't, you will be enlightened on the topic and also be moved by this inter-generational story of child-rearing, professional ambition, and the love and hate of food.
Highly recommended.

Murder in the name of God in the San Francisco Bay Area
By mf_sf
Taylor Helzer was a devout Mormon who lost his moral compass after diving into the teachings of a "self-help" program and heavy drug use. Charismatic since a child, he managed to manipulate his brother and a lonely woman into sharing his belief that he was a prophet who would save the world from the Apocalypse. His plan was to kidnap the top leaders of the church and force them to write letters to Mormons declaring him the new leader.

Author and journalist Claire Booth gives an excellent narrative of the shocking events of the summer of 2000, when the Helzer gang brutally murdered five innocent Bay Area residents -- including the daughter of blues musician Elvin Bishop -- in an effort to extort money he hoped would finance his plan.

Booth gives us insight into the real nature and history of all the people involved -- the victims, their families, law enforcement, the killers -- and shows us how Helzer transformed into the false prophet.

The False Prophet
By Barbara Masaki
This extensively-researched true crime story reads like a novel. The players come alive to a disturbing extent. I hope Ms. Booth continues with her crime writing efforts.

Well written tale of murder by...est
By Jeri
Taylor was a devout Mormon, raised in a devout home. He was hard working as a stock broker. All seemed well until he took a self-help course, a later day version of est, where he was screamed at, told he was nothing, and, most important, told that there was no right or wrong.

Almost overnight he morphed into someone who hid from customers rather than be bothered with them, and he plunged into heavy drug use, including meth. Eventually he pretended to have mental problems so he could be paid disability.

He and his ragtag group decided they would murder people for money. And by the way, the murders are described in terrible detail.

This is a truly fascinating tale, well written and absorbing.

On the downslide
By Serenity68
I've been a fan of Cast's Goddess Summoning series for awhile, but they have slowly gone downhill. I think it started with Goddess of Love, which I found to be a disappointment and a bit of an eye roller, and has just gotten lower and lower. Goddess of Legend is by far the worst. The constant use of slang (seriously, what forty-something year old woman uses that much slang ALL the time??), the lack of details and character development, and just an overall rushed feeling. It honestly feels like Cast is just cranking out the books for quota purposes- the heart is completely missing. Goddess of the Rose and Goddess of Spring had so much detail and really just drew you in. You were able to spend awhile with the characters, getting into their lives and getting to know them. The stories and the romance were spot on and almost beautiful. Now I find myself frustrated with the characters, the repetitiveness of situations, and the constant use of the phrase (though varied) that "older woman are better because they're more experienced and mature".

Isabel is almost a one dimensional character whose sole purpose is to moon over Arthur's smile and crank out the slang. Guinevere is annoyingly moody. Arthur falls flat for me, as does the young Lancelot. What could have been interesting characters, Merlin and Viviene, are just kind of shoved in there, and never explored. By far the most puzzling and "huh" thing is the fact that Viviene summons Isabel to save Merlin, who has put himself into a magical sleep rather than face what looks like a crappy future because Arthur gets depressed about Guinevere and Lancelot. *spoiler alert* Isabel and Arthur fall for each other, Merlin wakes up, and THEN SHE LEAVES, fades away back to her own time after sacrificing herself. So what was the point? How did that save Arthur and Merlin? Wasn't he going to be all depressed after she left? And Viviene's magical tear necklace makes all of the people Isabel loved then go to Isabel's time, with the same names and qualities. It just didn't work for me at all and I seriously felt like throwing something in frustration because I know Cast can do better.

I think this may be the last Cast book I purchase. I just can't see getting my hopes up again, shelling out the money, and then being hugely disappointed.

Small charms in this Camelot
By Archgirl82
I typically like to start off with reviews being as open as humanly possible given my taste can be somewhat different than those around me.

But I truly have to say that the BAD absolutely outweigh the GOOD in this newest P.C. Cast addition to the Goddess series. I won't give too much away for those looking to see if this is something up their alley but enough to let you know this book is one I would highly suggest you not read in its entirety but rather the synopsis on the item description page here at Amazon. Its that bad! I by no means am what you would call a fembot and I find at times in P.C's other books it can get a little girl-powery but nevertheless I have alway been endeared to those women, Shannon, Kat, Jackie and C.C. to name my favorites however in this book I find the feminist outlook simply too vomit-inducing!!!! Really after the first 100 times PC expresses the age old "women can do anything men can do" adage I find myself secretly wishing this was in fact the Medieval Times when women were silent wallflowers. Its exhausting picking through most of a book heavily ladened with girl-power ideals to get to characters that in truth be told were nowhere near being as fully developed as they could and should have been. I find myself gravitating towards Arthur and James and wishing the rest would join Merlin. I never felt a sense of any individuality from the characters but cooker cutters versions and that the book moved at a break neck pace over parts which were mildly entertaining and excruciatingly slow over those parts I'd rather be tortured than read.

AND the most annoying part of the book: ISABEL continues to speak like a illiterate high schooler and not the well to do photojournalist PC describes her as. Really the "Yo" and "Buck Up" are not funny but annoying and the Jeopardy thing gets old real quick. I have never met a 40 something who would use slang and not fear being ridiculed by their peers. However here she's painted as inspiring and wise as a result of her "funny way of speaking". Its left me with only one conclusion either she's a moron or Arthur and his people are. In Camelot with Gods and Goddess galore could they truly not find another savior for Arthur thats better suited than this nimcompoop?

Bottom Line: THE WORST Cast book written. Stick with Warrior Rising, Goddess of the Sea or The Partholon Series if you want fairy tale/mythology at PC's best!

Book Three in Pleasant Valley Series
By Susan K. Edwards
If you enjoyed the previous books Pleasant Valley Book Series Books then you are sure to enjoy this one too. I love the fact that Ms. Perry always weaves in her previous characters from her earlier books ... keeps us up to date with old friends .... and this time she brought back Anna. Anna, who broke her sister, Leah's heart when she left her Amish family ... then she comes back as all things an unwed mother of a little girl! Leave it to Anna ... it deals with some of the issues that Anna experience previously which I truly enjoyed ... and I loved how she matured and we watched her grow. How she learned that Samuel was there for her ... and the heartbreak of Myra ... the compassion of family and all of a sudden she realized that they didn't make her feel smothered but comforted!

The other reviews go into depth over the storyline so I won't go there ... but just to say ... this is definitely another book worth reading ... and I already can't wait for #4!

Have to admit, however, that not only am I a truly lover of Christian Fiction ... but absolutely adore reading Amish Fiction!

charming second chance at life
By Harriet Klausner
Three years ago Anna Beiler left her Amish home in Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania to live with the English. However, when she comes home she doesn't return alone. Instead she is accompanied by an under one year old baby, Gracie who she claims as her daughter.

The Plain People are stunned that unmarried Anna had a child out of wedlock and some want to shun her. She conceals from everyone even her loved ones that the baby is not hers; she took the infant after her friend Janni, the child's mother died, to keep the little girl safe from her abusive father Pete. Anna prays that hiding amongst the Plain folks will keep the baby safe., but fears what she might bring upon her family as she moves in with her brother Joseph and his wife Myra and is welcomed by her father, her sister Leah (see Leah's Choice) and her brother-in-law and his family. Anna also finds herself attracted Joseph's machine shop partner, Samuel Fisher, who seemed like slow learner to her as a child but now she appreciates that he is not simple but a reflective thinker. As she feels welcomed and her baby accepted, Anna looks back at her reckless behavior praying that her community will forgive her.

The third Pleasant Valley Amish romance (see Rachel's Garden) is an interesting look at a young woman who left but has come back apparently tainted. Although Samuel and the lead female protagonist's family and community play major roles and Gracie's father a minor but key part, the title is accurate as this is clearly Anna's Return. She holds the well written entertaining story line together as Marta Perry provides a charming second chance at life romance with a bit of late suspense.

From Publishers Weekly
Tongue-in-cheek humor lifts this weird but fun hybrid, part knitting cozy, part paranormal romance, from romance veteran Bretton (Just Desserts). After a classy female tourist drowns mysteriously in an icy lake in remote Sugar Maple, Vt., the Montpelier authorities ask Boston homicide cop Luke MacKenzie to investigate. As Sugar Maple's temporary police chief, Luke soon notices the village's odd ambience. Originally a haven for witches who fled the Salem witchcraft trials three centuries earlier, Sugar Maple is now home to witches, vampires, fairies and trolls. Luke is also attracted to Chloe Hobbs, the half-human owner of the knitting shop Sticks & Strings, who must find Mr. Right if she's to preserve the spell that sustains the town's unusual residents. As sparks literally fly between the two, Chloe's "magickal" side stirs into life. Bretton charmingly depicts how love empowers Chloe and awakens Luke to some major surprises. (Nov.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Although Chloe Hobbs’ Sticks and Strings has been named New England’s number-one knit shop two years in a row, the other residents of the quintessential small town of Sugar Maple, Vermont, don’t want to draw attention to themselves. Shape-shifters, vampires, sprites, and other supernatural beings, they live under a protective spell spun by Chloe’s ancestors. Since Chloe is only half magik, with a human father and a sorceress mother, the spell is growing weaker. So the townspeople are busily setting her up with otherworldly males, ranging from trolls to selkies, in hopes that with a paranormal partner, Chloe will find her inner enchantress, and Sugar Maple will once again be safe. Unfortunately, their matchmaking efforts fail, and a woman is murdered, the first homicide since the spell was cast. Luke MacKenzie, the human detective investigating the homicide, is instantly attracted to Chloe. Much to the dismay of the town, the feeling is mutual, and the fate of Sugar Maple hangs in the balance. Bretton (Someone like You, 2005; Just like Heaven, 2007; Just Desserts, 2008) spins an imaginative and charming tale. --Shelley Mosley

Fun and entertaining read
By Terri DuLong
This was my first time reading this author and I was a bit hesitant because the back cover mentioned "vampires, sprites" and I don't do scary or gory.
So I'm VERY glad I got the book, because gory and scary it wasn't. What it was was pure delight! Loved the characters, the town and the plot. An extra bonus for me, as a knitter, is that the main character owns a knit shop and there's lots of mentions of yarn and knitting.
Adding to my enjoyment of the book is the fact that it's the first in a series. So now I'm looking forward to book #2 and I highly recommend this one!

Glad I finally decidedto buy it!
By Kindle Customer
I almost didn't get this book. I figured it was a "chick book" and I know nothing about knitting, etc. I finally picked it up because I couldn't find anything else to read. I am glad I did.
I ignored references to types of yarn and tools used, and throughly enjoyed the book. I love mysteries, and this is a great one, just a little off-beat. At the end I couldn't put it down, I had to see what happened. I recommend this one very much!

What a fun read
By Rho
I haven't even finished the book yet but was looking to see if by chance this would be a series because I am enjoying it so much. And I am thrilled to see that it is -- I can't wait to read more about the residents of Sugar Maple Vt -

And not only is it a fun read but Chloe owns a yarn shop that I want to visit -- and what spinner wouldn't want that basket of never ending roving.

I can tell this is a book I won't want to end .....

Good Thriller - New Orleans Locale
By M. Rondeau
John Merrick was a career cop, a good cop until one fateful night when he accidentally killed a fellow officer. The horror of that mistake overwhelmed him and he turned in his badge, left Chicago for his hometown of New Orleans and turned to a bottle for solace to help him forget the horrifying images of a fellow cop dying in his arms.

Julia Wainwright had long ago gotten over her schoolgirl crush for John Merrick. She had since become a very private and independent woman, an antiquarian bookseller by day and secret author by night. Lately she had become the target of threatening letters that led her to believe someone knew of her alter ego. As a favor to her father, John had been talked into looking into the matter to discover Julia's stalker. John's intention had been to offer a quick security check then turn the whole business over to someone else -anyone else but him. Though when he discovered Julia `all grown up' with gypsy blue eyes and a body fashioned for sin, turning the case over to someone else would no longer be an option.

*** The suspense of this well-written story was top-notch filled with an intriguing plot, plenty of vividly described action scenes that kept you turning the pages. The character definition was superior as well, so much so that this reader had no trouble becoming invested in the outcome of the mystery. However, with this said, I will also state that John Merrick was a not hero that I would have envisioned as a leading man and not one I could ever fall in love with. No matter the trauma, witnessing a man's journey to the bottom of a bottle is not romantic especially when it is so vividly portrayed. Obviously this is a catch 22 situation for an author when they can make the reader visualize the downside of a character's personality. Consequently, I didn't get a feel so much for romance between the two protagonists as a heavy dose of sensual lust. On the plus side, the stalker was drawn as a certifiably crazed madman and the author created situations that delivered edge of the seat imagery that are not for the faint of heart. Bottom line is you will be emotionally involved in this excellent thriller that should keep fans of Castillo coming back for more.

Just so-so
By cmiller
Linda Castillo has become one of my very favorite authors in recent years. While I did enjoy Whisper in the Dark, I didn't love it. It didn't seem up to par with previous books.

John Merrick is tortured ex-Detective. After shooting a DEA agent in a drug bust gone bad, he turns to the bottle. It seems that gin is the only thing that helps him dull the memory of having a man die in his arms. When an old friend calls in a favor, John heads home to New Orleans.

Julia Wainwright's pride and joy is her antique bookshop. When she starts receiving strange notes which refer to a book she wrote under a pseudonym, she realizes that she has a crazy stalker on her hands. When her father brings in John Merrick, Julia doesn't have much hope that John can do much to help her.

I did enjoy this book. Even though John is a good guy deep down, he did not seem like hero material. He is drunk almost every night, walks out on Julia several times, and she still falls in love with him? Even though Julia knew him from her childhood, she was only a child. So if she's falling in love based off her memories of him, that's just ew[...]

I had high expectations going in, which is why I was dissapointed. You may not be, so I urge you to try it.
