Under Enemy Colors, by S. Thomas Russell

Born to an English father and a French mother, lieutenant Charles Saunders Hayden?s career is damned by his ?mixed? heritage. Assigned to the HMS Themis, an aging frigate under the command of a captain reviled by his crew for both his brutality towards his men and his cowardice in battle, Hayden is torn between honor and duty, as the British navy engages the French in a centuries-old struggle for power.

From Publishers Weekly
Russell's first-rate debut features taut plotting, liberal action and an attractively modest hero: Royal Navy Lt. Charles Hayden. In 1793, Britain is at war with revolutionary France, and Hayden, the son of an English father and a French mother, feels torn in half. Denied a promotion, he reluctantly accepts appointment as first lieutenant to the frigate Themis: the commander, Capt. Josiah Hart, has powerful connections in the Admiralty, but is widely disparaged among the fleet as a tyrannical coward. Hayden is dismayed to find the ship in a state of dreadful disarray, the crew on the verge of mutiny and Hart hostile to Hayden's remedial efforts. With the French in sight, tensions aboard come to a boil. Russell writes knowledgeably about late–18th-century naval warfare and lyrically about the sea. In Hayden, he has created a complex, sympathetic hero. (Sept.)

Both C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series and Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels reaped critical success and legions of faithful fans. Those authors succeeded by blending careful history, vast knowledge of ships and the sea, fascinating glimpses of the period, and ripping-good adventure into spellbinding fiction. Now Russell is bidding fair to succeed the departed masters (and join those, like Bernard Cornwell, still asea). It's 1793, and England is battling revolutionary France. Honorable, heroic Lieutenant Charles Hayden has only one chance to get back to sea: he must join HMS Themis as first lieutenant, under Captain Sir Josiah Hart, despite Hart's reputation for being "shy" about engaging the enemy. Hayden accepts the appointment and quickly learns that Hart is not only a coward but also a tyrant toward his crew, some of whom are intrigued by the "republican" ideas coming out of the U.S. and France. Perhaps not yet quite as polished as Forester or O'Brian, Russell has the makings of an A-lister and is sure to attract fans of fighting sail. Gaughan, Thomas

Review
Before them, Hayden could see the mutineers, armed and stripped to the waist, watching them with a mixture of outrage and dire apprehension. The second French frigate, La Rochelle, was quickly ranging up to a position where she might unload her entire broadside into the Themis, and the mutineers could not have been insensible to it. "Surrender your ship. We know you have less than half a crew. Haul down your colours or we will board." Mutineers on the quarterdeck began a fierce argument. One of the men--Jarvis--broke away from the group and came to the rail. "We are English mutineers," he called through cupped hands, though the distance between the ships could be measured in yards. "We have removed our officers and wish to take our ship into Brest harbour. We wish to join you. Do you understand? Join the revolution...." "Lay down your weapons and we will talk."

As Good as Sharpe But on the Seas!
By Robert Abidor
One does have to wonder how the British navy conquered the sea led by madmen. It is rare that you read a Napoleanic-era fiction without coming across a Britsh commander who is not crazy. Russell certainly offers his version. Ah, but it is the hero, part- English, part- French Lt. Charles Hayden who distinquishes Russell from his peers.
In Hayden we have a thoughtful, often kind sailor who rises above the adversity of his crazed captain, Captain Hart. But it is not that alone which makes Under Enemy Colors a great read. Russell manages, better than any other I have read, to truly capture the smell and feel of the sea and of naval combat. Rarely has an author so insiduously enabled the reader to place him or herself in the time and place of naval affairs.
I was a 1980 reader of Cornwell;s Sharpe series and got into O'Brien rather early as well, In my book (pardon the pun) any author can do quite well being mentioned in that company. Russell's characters, heros and anti-heros, officers and common seamen all evoke a time and place well known to readers of historical fiction. To succeed, the author must be able to transform the reader into feeling as if the reader were there. I actually could feel and smell the sea as a storm approached or when the ship was becalmed.
I do not go into a summary of the book. Why bother. Under Enemy Colors is an excellent read for Historical Adventure series devotees. I look forward to more Hayden adventures!

Note: I would hope that in the future Russell include a glossary. While his use of period nautical terms enhances the color of Under Enemy Colors, it did leave me guessing as to definition a bit too often.

Forester, O'Brian, Russell? Just Possibly
By Douglas S. Wood
S. Thomas Russell debuts with `Under Enemy Colors' an age of sail novel set in 1793. Lieutenant Charles Hayden finds himself summoned by the First Secretary of the Navy Philip Stephens who offers him a position aboard the Themis as first lieutenant - with an added duty to file secret reports with Stephens. Hayden reluctantly accepts what he feels are Stephens' somewhat dishonorable demands. Arriving for service he finds a ship in utter disarray under the command of the `shy' tyrant Josiah Hart. Hayden's efforts to set the ship aright are frustrated by the captain and the second lieutenant as much as by a fractious crew.

That much the reader learns in the first 50 pages. From there Russell takes the reader along on a rollicking good tale with a stealthy night-time ambuscade, espionage on French soil, sea battles with broadsides and boardings, and a mutiny. For all the action Russell also manages to weave in Hayden's back story (his mother is French), a budding romance, a debate society among the middies, and even an inventor's attempted improvement on the ship's guns. Russell's talents shine as he unfolds the courts martial and accompanying naval intrigue.

`Under Enemy Colors' inevitably draws comparison to the tales of C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey and Russell relishes the challenge. This reviewer finds himself somewhat surprised, but delighted to report that Russell's Charles Hayden just may be up to the task. Russell at times seems to be in a rush to get his series fully under sail, but perhaps that may be excused by the obvious care and devotion the author gave to writing this book. Russell promises another installment in 2009. Let's hope it fulfills the promise of `Under Enemy Colors', which was just a heck of a lot of fun to read.

An interesting read. Greatly different from "Master & Commander" series which took a little getting used to. Thought character interaction was interesting and well done.

Marissa and Paul Price are living the fast-paced life in Manhattan. They have prestigious jobs, and their eight-year-old daughter, Pansy, has a nanny and is enrolled in the right school. When Paul is offered a management position at a resort on Hawaii’s Big Island, they decide to move to paradise, but it is not what they expect. For the first time, Marissa becomes a stay-at-home mom in a house that unexpectedly turns out to be a fixer-upper. Paul absolutely loves his new life, while Marissa is miserable. The cracks in their marriage widen, and when Paul tells her that he needs time away from her negativity, Marissa suspects another woman. Supporting two homes creates financial hardship, so Marissa takes in female tenants and starts repairing the house, intending to sell it and return to New York. But then she starts bonding with her roommates and the island. Sweet Life
By J. Jordan
Wow! Mia King did it again! She challenges her readers in a light hearted way yet her point comes across loud and clear. She says,"Grow up girls, and while you're at it - GET A LIFE!"...or should we say SWEET LIFE? If you are looking for inspiration with island flavor, this is the book!

Really wonderful book
By K. P. Brown
I am not typically a woman's book reader. I am a woman who generally reads sci-fi, fantasy, horror, thriller and some random genres here and there. I had come upon this book at the library on the recommended shelf and found a treasure. The night I started it, I stayed up until 2am ("Just one more chapter and then I'll go to bed") and accidentally took too long of a lunch the next day. I finished it the next night and I absolutely loved it.
It's a sweet little story with great characters. You get interested in their lives right away and just have to know what happens. The main women are all so their own characters and you love them for all of it. The characters have integrity, morals and show that to be a good woman's book, you don't have to have steamy sex scenes but instead can focus on what most women want - a happy, healthy life and family. The struggle to make this happen and realizing when we've lost touch and are blind to it.
I really appreciated this book and it came along at a great time when I'm trying to reflect on and improve my own life. I wrote the author and told her how much I enjoyed it and got a very nice email in return. I'll be picking up her other books this evening and will have likely devoured them by this weekend.

While it doesn't say so on the cover or in the description on Amazon, this dictionary is pretty much limited to Brazilian Portuguese with regard to vocabulary and phonetics, and was of practically no help to me in reading a novel from Portugal.

From Publishers Weekly
At loose ends after her adventures in A Bone to Pick , former librarian Aurora Teagarden pitches in to help her mother Aida, a busy real estate agent in Lawrenceton, Ga. On her first unofficial showing of a house, Aurora discovers the naked corpse of a rival realtor in the master bedroom. Somewhat daunted, Aurora and her no-nonsense mom determine that the culprit must be another real estate agent--someone who could have gotten the key from Aida's office without raising suspicion. Then the body of another broker is discovered in another house for sale. Adding to Aurora's distress is her growing attraction to mysterious Martin Bartell, whose company has transferred him to Lawrenceton to reorganize its plant. Plucky, charming Aurora must choose between the dependable, uncomplicated Episcopalian minister whom she has been chastely dating and Martin, whose responsibility for laying off workers makes him dangerous to know. Meanwhile she and her mother question Aida's staff, other brokers and friends to determine who killed the realtors. With the disbanding of the Real Murders Club (which informally rehashed true crime cases), Aurora has time to sleuth to her heart's content in this high-spirited Southern cozy. From Kirkus Reviews
Aurora Teagarden (Roe for short), petite heroine of this amiable series (A Secret Rage, etc.) set in Atlanta exurb Lawrenceton, has left her library job after inheriting a house and other assets from her childless older friend, Jane Engle. Now testing the possibility of part-time work in her mother's real- estate agency, Roe's first assignment is to show the empty Anderton mansion to town newcomer, exec Martin Bartell. There, in the master bedroom, they discover the shackled body of promiscuous realtor Tonia Lee Greenhouse. They also discover a ferocious mutual attraction that proves distracting to Roe as she tries to figure out the who and why of Tonia Lee's murder. A second killing complicates matters, as does the ongoing series of thefts from unoccupied houses on the market. There's no shortage of suspects- -Tonia Lee's wronged husband for one; hardware-store owner Jimmy Hunter, whose hobby is looking at houses for sale, for another. But Roe spots a tell-tale clue and, in time-honored ninny style, puts herself at risk to prove her case. Despite too much girl chatter (clothes, hair, etc.), labored plotting, and some dangling loose ends, there's compensation in the nicely done Southern, small-town ambience, the torrid affair sensitively handled, and the breezy, unpretentious style. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Great read and quite different from the movie!!!
By Arlene M. Stephens
I've seen the Aurora Teagarden movie by this title and thought I'd give this book a shot, but was afraid because I'd seen the movie it would be boring to read it.....boy was I wrong!! Should have know with Charmaine Harris as the author it could never be boring. Story line is so much more in the book and also quite different than when it was adapted for tv. The story is very different and held my attention throughout! Same characters in the movie..basically, but there is so much more in the book and Ms. Harris is always exciting!

Three bedrooms, three stars....
By Pacey1927
This the the third Aurora Teagarden mystery by Charlaine Harris I've read. After inheiriting big bucks from a deceased acquaintance, Roe quits her job at the library and joins her mother's realty company at least for a little while, to see if it's something she enjoys. Unfortunately in one of the houses she shows, the corpse of another realtor is found bound to a bed. Who is the murderer? Shortly thereafter another body of yet another realtor is found. Per usual, Roe has a hard time keeping her nose out of it. Add in a new, older businessman (new in town) as a love at first sight romantic interest and Roe certainly has her hands full. The last 1/4 of the book is the most interesting. There was several little suprises that grabbed my interest more than anything up to that point. I didn't think I cared for her new man Martin, until this point and I still am not crazy about him. Maybe he will grow on me. This brings me to a pet peeve I have about this series. In the first book "Real Murders" I thought it extrememely cute when Aurora noticed that she had never had a man interested in her and suddenly she had two. By book two gone were the previous two suitors and suddenly she had a new preacher boyfriend. Now in book 3 she has yet another man. So for the majority of her life she never had a man find her attractive and suddenly in the span of three books she has attracted a minimum of four men? What kind of love potion is the chick taking? Rather unbelievable, I say. Another problem I have and the reason for the three star rating is because I just don't care about these characters. Aurora is boring and bland, so is her mother, so are all the other realtors, so are her men, so are the victims, and even the suspects. No one ever has had a real motive for the killings up through this book. The whole town is darn bland. It pains me to say that because Charlaine Harris is up in my favorite top two or three authors. She has changed the entire type of books I read and collect due to her Sookie series. I love Charlaine and I love mysteries. Why can't I love these books? It makes little sense to me but its true. I don't mind this book, it killed some time, but the whole time I thought about my TBR stack and couldn't wait to read something else in it. "Three Bedrooms, One Corpse" is not a winner but is not really a loser either. Its just Bland.

One of the Most Amusing Mystery Writers Around!
By Silmarwen
Aurora Teagarden returns in the 3rd book in the hilarious mystery series. Aurora is a short, respectible, 30-something single female in the small town of Lawrenceton. She used to work at the library until she unexpectedly inherited a fortune from a friend. Now she is footloose and fancy free with no job to tie her down, no boyfriend (due to a recent break up) and no money problems. Too bad that she is bored to death. Aurora decides that she needs something to do, so she starts learning about the real estate business from her mother, the best real estate agent in town. When her mother asks her to go and open up an expensive home so that her wealthy new clients can take a look, Roe is agreeable and cheerfully sets off to show the home to the best of her ability. Within an hour she has decided that the real estate business isn't for her, that the new guy in town, although quite a bit older is really hot and there is definitely some attraction there, and that, no matter how trashy in real life, no one deserves to be murdered and put on display in an empty house for someone to find. When her friend's husband is accused of being the murderer, Roe feels that she has to intervene and find out what really happened. Along the way she has to deal with her completely physical reaction to a gorgeous, wealthy older man, a cantankerous cat, shopping for a new home, and a disgruntled ex-employee of her new boyfriend who has started stalking her. You know, the usual problems...
I thought that Three Bedrooms, One Corpse was quite entertaining and finished it in one sitting. Charlaine Harris is a very talented author and, while there may have been a few small errors (which I didn't notice because I was too caught up in the story), she has a very smooth writing style that allows you to be amused and informed at the same time. The plot moves quickly and there are several subplots that keep the reader involved with the characters. Although I still enjoyed the Lily Bard/Shakespeare series and the Southern Vampire series more, I have grown quite fond of Aurora Teagarden and know that I will pick up anything that Charlaine Harris cares to write. At the cheap price that these books are available for, why not treat yourself?

The Laughing Gorilla: The True Story of the Hunt for One of America's First Serial Killers, by Robert Graysmith

During the 1920s, in more than a dozen cities, over four years, and across two continents, women were being butchered. Eyewitneses claim the perpetrator was a hulking Bible-carrying brute who lumbered on all fours, and laughed maniacally with each new slaughter.

The crimes haunted San Francisco Police Captain Charles Dullea, the last honest cop in one of the most notoriously corrupt departments in the country. But nothing could have prepared Dullea for where the case- and the truth-would take him.

Good atmosphere, overly cryptic writing style
By Lisa J. Steele
I found The Laughing Gorilla in the used book bin for a mere $8; at that price it was worth it. It is wonderfully evocative of 1930s San Francisco, with some insight into the San Francisco police department of its time. Read it for that atmosphere. If you are trying to keep track of the three main murderers (and a few minor ones), you may find yourself paging back and forth to keep track of the minor characters. If you know anything about modern concerns about forensics, you'll need to set that aside -- the author chooses to follow the then-current faith in hair and fiber matching, handwriting comparisions, and the accuracy of the polygraph, making only a brief aside to mention one conclusion that is contradicted by contemporaneous British research.

Where the book fails, at least for me, is in an overly cryptic writing style. For example, there is a 10 page digression on the White Mask gang, a group of safecrackers. About six pages in, the gang's leader is confronted by a patrol officer, who recognizes him -- but the reader is not told who he is. For the next five pages, the author avoids naming the man, even when Capt. Dullea first confronts him. It is only at in the last sentence of the chapter that the author names the gang's leader as Duella's mentor, who has only briefly been previously introduced. The mysterious build-up seems to come to an anticlimactic end.)

At the very end of the book, the author explains in a note its curious structure -- it is built in threes: three murderers, three tasks facing the protagonist (Captain Dullea) in cleaning up his department, deposing a corrupt Chief, and capturing (the second) Gorilla Man; and finally three betrayals of Dullea by corrupt officials. (It might have been far more helpful if this note had come at the front.)

The book begins with a series of murders, for which Earle Nelson is eventually convicted and executed in Canada primarily on the strength of some 40 eyewitnesses. That chapter ends with the cryptic setence "Elsewhere the Gorilla Man stirred. His huge hands opened and closed. He was coming back to life. His eyes turned west." (p. 45) Is the author trying to imply that Nelson might not have been guilty? The author does emphasis Captain Dullea (the book's protagonist) distain for eyewitness identifications (p. 11) and later concludes that two witnesses who glimpsed another killer made a mistake when they identified yet another murder as the killer from a newspaper photo. (p. 241, 243) Yet, the author draws no conclusions about whether Dullea is correct in his concerns (the DNA exoneration cases and the Department of Justice guide on Eyewitness ID woudl emphatically say "yes"), or, if so, how such mistakes could happen.

Eventually, the reader will figure out that the author is using "gorilla men" as a metaphore for a series of sexually-motivated murders in the 1930s. Indeed, the Titular "Laughing Gorilla" first appears on page 82, commits a murder, then vanishes again.

Meanwhile, the reader learns about some of Dullea's other cases -- a corrupt Chief Public Defender, Duellea's mentor who becomes a leading safecracker, and Dullea's struggles with deparment corruption.

After the Laughing Gorilla's murderous debut, the reader is next introduced to "Slipton J. Fell", part time reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. The author reveals that he is a murderer and hints that he may be the Laughing Gorilla. Although we are introduced to Bosworth, Fell's editor, nothing is said about the fallout of Fell's eventually arrest and gulity plea in another case, or how the paper reacted to finding out that two eyewitnesses identified Fell as the Laughing Gorilla.

By page 251, Fells has confessed to one murder and pled guilty. The police are unable to charge him with the Laughing Gorilla murder, but believe him to be guilty. Yet, the chapter ends with Dullea unsatisfied, concluding that Fells was not the Gorilla Man. (So why have we spent the last 170ish pages following him? -- he's an interesting character, but how does he fit into _this_ book?)

But for the next 50 pages, the real Gorilla Man is mostly absent. And the reader learns more about police corruption in San Francisco. Interesting stuff, but it isn't tied in to the Gorilla investigation.

Finally, as the book meanders to its conclusion, the Gorilla Man reappears at around page 304. The book concludes 30 pages later with Dullea's confrontation with Harry Gordon, who confesses to the murder commmitted on page 82. We learn nothing of Gordon's fate -- is he convicted? executed? There's a brief author's note, but little to tell the reader what happened to the characters after Gordon's arrest.

In sum, read it for its atmosphere, but expect to struggle with its structure.

Sucks You Into 1930s San Francisco!
By Alison A. Shurtleff
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. Graysmith has a way of imbuing each sentence with an interesting fact, as he did in "Zodiac." He is definitely one of the best true crime writers out there. This story was fascinating, and how Graysmith was able to put himself so effectively in the time and place of San Francisco in the 1930s is a mystery. I eagerly await his next book.

Laughing Gorilla leaves me unsatisfied
By DocKC
The writer tries to be too clever in his gorilla metaphor, skipping around too much from one case to another, involving multiple killers without telling us much about them. For example, where did Slipton J. Fell come from? How did he get his name? etc. The other "gorillas" killers are also quite sketchy for the most part. The corruption story is not well-integrated. However, even with all the flaws, it is a fascinating look at the beginnings of the Serial Killer phenomenon in 1930's San Francisco. I could see this as a movie.

If you love Eve
By Amazon Customer
I love the "In Death" series and was not disappointed by this collection of short stories.
Each story described a case Eve handled. The major characters were all there --Eve, Roake, Delia. If you have read all the books be aware that these stories predate the newer books.
If you are like me you start a JD Robb book and don't stop until you are done. These stories give you an Eve "fix" in a shorter formate for the times you just can't sit and read the afternoon away.

Needs to be re-released with BOTH versions included.
By Azurestrangelove
When I read this 1997 version of Demon Seed I thoroughly enjoyed it, though I did feel that it lacked a certain something that I couldn't quite put my finger on(besides length.) Then I spotted the original 1973 first edition in all of its tattered, musty glory at a second hand store. While I was somewhat turned off by it's yellowed pages and slight odor, what more could I ask for at twenty five cents? Plus I had heard that the original was slightly different and very hard to find. I had expected to find the same story with a few different charactor names and phrases but found myself reading a very different story.

This review is being written to contrast both versions of this novel and make others more aware of the original, which desperately needs to be brought back. I am assuming that anyone reading this review has already read or has become familiar with the plot of the 1997 version through reading other reviews.

I was immediately elated to find that this 1973 version(#1) favors Susan's point of view, which is completely absent in the new version(which I'll call #2, so I don't confuse anyone.)Proteus does speak in his/it's perspective in an interview like in #2, but not nearly as much. Susan is timid, shy and reclusive and seems much finally being able to know her thoughts gives her character a much more fragile and innocent disposition, unlike the tough willed, strong character that she conveys in #2.

While there are a lot of similarities there are also many differences between the plots of 1 and 2 that make each one uniquely different.

Susan's "Therapy" in #2 is termed Computer bleeding in #1, a process in which she actually has holes in the back of her neck which literally plug her into the jacks in the system in order to relive/repress her painful memories from the past.

Alex, her ex-husband, is not portrayed as the heartless abuser he was in #2 but as a patient and loving husband whom Susan could not get close to because of her issues from her past(She was raped by her sadistic Grandfather, among other things).

There is no creepy helper(I forget his name at the moment but I'm sure you know who I mean) to kill off unwanted visitors and keep Susan in line, this is done instead by little grey tentacle-like beings created by Proteus called Amorphous alloys. Proteus also controls Susan through the use of subliminals(he gets into her head and forces her to do whatever he wills her to do, THAT sounds familiar.)

Susan's pregnancy occurs at a slower rate of 10-11 months in #1 rather than the speedy gestation of a mere 4-5 months in #2. Also, the freaky offspring is much different, though equally horrifying.

There are also many other differences but hopefully I've interested enough to try to track down the original.

Honestly I find it difficult to choose which version is the superior one. I think I prefer #1 because Susan's point of view was desperately needed and makes her so much more likable as a heroine who overcomes so much in the story. However, because of such an emphasis being placed on Susan this time around, Proteus' developing personality/love/obsession regarding Susan was not explored enough to be believable for me. The only reason why this wasn't an issue was because I was already very familiar with the psychological dynamics of the lovesick computer program from reading #2.

It is also evident that many of the differences between 1 and 2 were probably changed because they didn't really make sense.

In #1, Susan is portrayed and seen as a vulnerable HUMAN being in a mother earth/goddess type of way and yet she also possesses computer-like qualities and can be controlled through the computer, unlike the Susan in #2.

Although I liked the amorphous alloy idea in #1 better than the smelly, retarded weirdo in #2, it seems a bit sketchy on how one would be able to explain how the house was always adequately supplied with food, and not to mention who supplied the sperm for Proteus' hellish creation.

There are other discrepancies between the two that could use a little clarification.

While each version is cleverly written and very good on it's own, both of them are strengthened and contrasted by eachother. Although there are too many differences between the two that rule out the idea of somehow merging them into one master work, I believe that many reviewers who gave #2 a low or mediocre rating might change their minds after reading #1. Both versions need to be re-released together in a single volume so readers can experience both Proteus's and Susan's perspectives and decide for themselves. Both are excellent works and need the credit that they are due.

Can computers and humans mate? Find out...
By Kasia S.
This vintage Koontz, although rewritten since it's first publishing was a very fast read, and I liked that, a story with a punch that I got through in less than a day. In a nutshell it's a tale about Susan, a woman who was a survivor of abuse as a child from her father and then from her ex husband. She sealed herself off in a mansion with sate of the art computer system that was supposed to protect her from everyone. The whole house was monitored by Proteus, the ultra smart computer system, one so advanced that it taught itself to love her, to obsess about watching its mistress through all the lenses in the house, wishing that it could have flesh so it could taste things, smell and best of all reproduce to spread it's computer altered gene into a living, breathing person. The computer regarded itself as a male and spoke to her though the speakers, very interesting concept of another type of a relationship between a human female and a computer who "thought" of itself outside of the box. It's mission is a bit of an enigma until one finishes the book so I won't divulge but the title of the book says it pretty well.

Proteus scanned books and websites trying to learn about humans and their desires, it read Marquis de Sade and thought of him as a relationship experts, it longed for the flesh and it's vast data input that possessed all the five senses. Susan became a prisoner in her own home, held hostage by the computer system, the best part of the story was the interaction between the artificial intelligence and a woman who had enough of abuse yet did not want to end her life just yet. She was a tough cookie and proved more than once that no microchip can be greater than a pulsating brain.

Full of twists and turns the story was captivating and entertaining. The computer made some good statements about humanity; our love of horror movies that didn't stop us from eating candy and popcorn during murder scenes in a movie theater yet one that send so many to their demise in the hopes of achieving something great through sacrifice. His deductions of taking a woman and forcing things on her were interesting and made for a good read. Her struggles to win this fight were suspenseful, since her opponent was in every room, telephone, light fixture, wall and controlled all aspects of the house.

Great short book on a cold night, it had some nice sarcastic humor which I appreciated and not too much tech talk.

A Little Rushed And Uneven Around The Edges
By Will Culp
Demon Seed(1973). A Novel By Horror/Suspense Author Dean Koontz.

In the 1970's, technology was a feeble imagination, with TV's and telephones being the only household item, while today, it's hard not to find something digital! Dean Koontz, in the early 1970's, saw the use of Cray super-computers and Digital Security, and he pitched an idea for the story, where an emotional computer virus comes in control of a person's security system. While the story may have seemed far-fetched at the time, it has aged well, and now, everything in the novel doesn't seem very odd! Needless to say, I was interested in the novel's surreal plot, so I picked up 'Demon Seed'. Did I enjoy it as much as I thought I would? Read on to find out!

Plot-

Susan Harris, a rich entrepeuner, is holed up in her secluded house, which is protected by an advanced security system, which runs every aspect of the house, from air conditioning to opening the windows. Other than her servants, which come for only a few hours each day, she is in basic seclusion with her security system. Without Susan knowing, a foreign virus, created by her husband's old company, takes over her security system, and it intends for Susan to give birth to the virus's child, an all-knowing and emotional being. As Susan desperately seeks to escape the virus's mindless grip, she must learn to destroy what cannot be killed...

Writing/Opinions/Etc.-

'Demon Seed' is a fast-paced, no-holds-barred thriller. This novel, which is short and to-the-point, should only take the reader a day or so to read. I read this in a few short days, and, while being a good novel, I found it to be far too short. Don't get me wrong, this book is over 250 pages, but, by the end of the novel, you don't care for the characters, or even be sure about the plot. I think the novel isn't as tight as it could have been, and, at times, it seems to go on without a plot, just rambling for a while. Also, at the end of the novel, the book seems unfinished and rushed, as if Koontz barely gave it a thought before ending it. On a positive note, since the novel is read by the computer virus, it gives the book an odd, yet incredibly immersive and original feel that Koontz has always been able to do.

Overall, 'Demon Seed' is a good, if not flawed thriller. I really had no big problems with this, except the plot was sadly rushed and, at times, poor. If Koontz had only made this 100 pages longer and improved upon the character development and thickened the plot, this *would* have been an excellent read, yet it falls to just being a *good* novel. Don't come in expecting a masterpiece, but, if you're new to Koontz, I doubt you'll be disappointed, and if you're a fan, be sure to pick this up.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO FANS OF THRILLERS AND DEAN KOONTZ! 4 STARS FOR HAVING A SKETCHY PLOT AND POOR ENDING; OTHERWISE IT WAS A GREAT READ!

From Publishers Weekly
Connolly's less-than-gala freshman attempt at crime fiction drops Boston banker Meg Corey into tiny Granford, Mass., where she's agreed to rehab a 200-year-old house while looking for a new job. Then Meg's ex-lover is found murdered and bobbing around in her brand new septic tank, a crime that could sour Granford's big chance to lure outside commercial investors. When the local cops appear determined to look no further than Meg for a suspect, she decides to turn sleuth. Her only ally, Seth Chapin, the plumber who installed the new system, is also a suspect and not much help. The premise and plot are solid, and Meg seems a perfect fit for her role. However, so much time is spent restating the story's major conflict that both Meg and Seth remain enigmas—dropped into the plot as if from outer space—with insufficient background information to ripen into well-rounded characters. A Winner for Fans of Cozy Mysteries
By Lesa Holstine
Some people snidely refer to a book as a cozy mystery. Sheila Connolly's One Bad Apple is an example of everything that is right with the cozy mystery. Her book has a likable heroine, an attractive small town setting, a slimy victim, and fascinating side elements. I hope Connolly returns readers to Granford, Massachusetts again.

Meg Corey lost her banking job in Boston in a downsize. She took on the joint ownership of an old house in Granford, and moved to that small community to get the house ready for sale. She didn't expect to find a two hundred year old house, an apple orchard covering fifteen acres, and major plumbing problems. Before the plumber could show up, Meg's ex-boyfriend landed on her doorstep. Neither expected to find the other there, but Chandler Hale was hoping to bring developers in for a major project in Grandford, and was recruiting votes in his favor. Meg rejected his business proposition, but that's not what it looked like to the police when Chandler ended up dead in her septic tank. The major suspects? Meg, and her new plumber, Seth, two people who might have an interest in the development project.

There's depth to the characters in this book that isn't always found in crime fiction. Meg, Seth, and some of the women in this book are well-developed. Meg's opinion of Granford and her house changes as she learns more about them, and becomes a little more comfortable with small town life. The information about apple orchards is interesting, and the requisite recipes in recent mysteries is an added bonus. No, One Bad Apple won't make the bestseller lists where every other book seems to be a thriller. However, for all of us who like an interesting mystery, nice people, development as a relevant issue, along with a background that's a little different, One Bad Apple is just what we're looking for. Sheila Connolly has written a winner for cozy mystery fans.

Sweet as Cider
By Dennis Phillips
Meg Corey just can't catch a break. First her boyfriend dumps her, then she loses her job to downsizing and then she becomes a suspect in a murder. Once she loses her job in Boston, Meg moves Granford Massachusetts with the idea of fixing up and selling an old home that her mother inherited years ago. Naturally the house was in much worse shape than she had expected and the work was furiously draining her bank account. Just when she thinks that things can't get any worse her sewer system backs up and requires a complete overhaul but she does catch a break when the nice guy local plumber can get started on the work right away. Her relief is short lived however when her ex-boyfriend shows up, not to ask her forgiveness but to make a business proposition. She turns the jerk down and is pretty sure that things can't get any worse until the next morning when her new sewer system backs up yet again. That's bad enough but when the plumber comes to check for the problem he finds the body of Meg's ex-boyfriend in the brand new septic tank.

As it turns out the ex-boyfriend was involved in a development project that would have taken most of the plumber's land and also the lovely orchard that Meg had just learned was on her property. With that in mind the state investigator soon considers both Meg and her plumber friend, as prime suspects and Meg can't see that he is trying very hard to find any other suspects. Because of that she starts to investigate on her own and she finally gets out of her crumbling house and meets the people of Granford. Pretty soon Meg starts to make friends and finds that she likes the locals very much, making her wonder if she really wants to sell the house or not. Before she makes that decision though she has to find the killer or she may be a guest of the state for the next few years.

I just love it when I come across the first book in a possible series that is this good because I know that I have some excellent reading to look forward to. The author has a very enjoyable writing style and the setting for this series is as realistic as any I have come across, yet it still manages to be just loads of fun. I have read books that were funnier and I have read books that were more realistic but I have seldom come across a cozy that balances the two so well. Meg herself is delightfully full of sarcastic wit but at the same time she is a very sympathetic character.

Despite the emphases on the characters the mystery itself is never allowed to stray far from the reader's attention and a well-constructed mystery it is. The solution is not so obvious that it can be solved half way through the book but it also isn't so obscure as to stretch credibility. This is definitely a welcome and tasty arrival on the cozy scene.

delightful charming small town regional cozy
By A Customer
Months after her boyfriend dumped her, Meg Corey's job is made redundant when her bank merges with a larger one. Her mother comes up with a solution that will occupy Meg for the next few months. They own property in Grandford, New England that includes a house and an apple orchard. If Meg fixes up the house, she will earn half the profits from the sale.

Neither Meg nor her mom is aware that the house needs enormous structural and cosmetic repair. The plumping needs immediate attention so she calls Seth Chapin who informs Meg the septic tank needs replacing. The day after it is fixed, her sink is stuffed, Seth inspects what is clogging the system only to find the corpse of Meg's ex boyfriend inside. He was in town to sell the concept of a strip mall and had many enemies with a motive to kill him.

There is a delightful charm to this small town regional cozy. The protagonist works the homicide because the police officer leading the investigation considers her the prime person of interest. Sheila Connolly provides a fascinating whodunit filled with surprises especially red herrings as the amateur competes with the cop to prove she is innocent by uncovering the identity of the guilty person.
