I love every book Joey Hill writes. This one is no exception. I loved how it transcended series's. The characters always have emotional depth and the love between H/h is always smoldering. Beautifully written. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Joey Hill has out done herself with the third installment in her mermaid series. This daring book explores the dark side of human nature. What is really evil?

In her latest book, Alexis (the daughter of the angel Jonah and the mermaid Anna) has always kept herself slightly apart because her power to feel other's emotions can be overwhelming. When she begins to have erotic dreams of a mysterious and sensuous lover she is troubled but not worried. Unfortunately, Alexis does not realize she is part of magical spell of binding. The man of her dreams is actually real and part of an evil world where there is only death and despair. During one of her dreams Alexis suddenly finds herself transported to the Dark One world where she finds herself a hostage.

Dante has dreamed of this moment. His spell has worked and the goddaughter of the witch who trapped him here will finally do his bidding. Dante plans to use Alexis as leverage in an attempt to get the witch to open the doorway into his mother's world. A world of freedom from the Dark One world. Dante is half vampire and half Dark One and as such is feared innately evil. To survive in this harsh work he has killed and sacrificed. When his vampire mother was brought to this world, she was raped and grew pregnant with him. Both were unable to escape. Dante has had to: beg, scrape and terrorize to gain his independence in a world that only respects violence and cruelty. To survive he has had to be cunning and brutal. When his mother finally went insane and died, Dante only had the cherished stories of her world and vowed to find his way there no matter the cost. But when Dante transports Alexis into his world her beauty and gentle nature make him feel emotions he has never felt before. With Alexis he finds there is another side to life, one that scares as well as enthralls him. As he reaches for the world that was stolen from him he must come to grips with his past of violence. One which he realizes Alexis has no part of.

This was a thrilling read from start to finish as I was quickly drawn in the powerful relationship between Dante and Alexis. Each needed each other to realize their full potential. Alexis may be gentle and caring but she in extremely understanding with her empathetic skills. She is the ideal person to accept Dante's special individuality as she guides him in this new world. Her courage and fortitude as she stands up and stands beside Dante are inspiring. As Dante grows and realizes the new world he has claimed is not easily mastered I was fascinated with his odd mix of: shrewdness, naivety and ability to work through his troubled past. Dante is the most darkly charismatic hero I have ever read. Even as I was repelled by his past I was enthralled by his compelling nature. His drive to change himself and make sense of his new world was transforming and mesmerizing to read.

I really feel Mermaid's Ransom pushes the envelope. For anyone who is bored with the typical romance and loves the paranormal, this is a book you will not soon forget. It is both edgy and magical. I would not recommend it for readers who enjoy light romances. The scenes between Dante and Alexis are sexually charged and the many characters are not cut and dried. Dante's struggle to make sense of his new world and redeem himself with the help of Alexis was gripping and intense. And Dante's history of violence and torment do not make him an easy hero to read. As he fights against his dark and dominant nature there is very real angst and emotion. This is a memorable book that I found difficult to let go!

A savage and pleasurable read

Ms. Hill has created a world worse than Hell. Hell is about redemption, but in the Dark One world, there is only utter evil. No light. I cannot express how much her work affects me. I was honestly horrified at the evil of Dante's world, where murder was not bad, only blinked at, accepted. Dante is a savage, beastial creature who, at first, seems incapable of anything beyond violence. Meet Lex, a girl whose happy little world is smashed apart when she realizes that she does not get to choose who she loves. Lex's life is ripped open and made vulnerable to the evil of the human heart. A MUST read. You will NOT be sorry.

ATF agent Alex Duarte, who debuted in Born's Field of Fire (2007), remains a man of action but, alas, little else, in his second outing, an otherwise snappy, well-plotted crime drama set in Panama and New Orleans. Duarte and several other federal agents are trying to track down a drug lord known only as Mr. Ortíz, a shadowy Panamanian suspected of shipping tons of marijuana to the U.S. In reality, Ortíz is exporting something far more dangerous: a nuclear bomb. Born, himself a state police officer in Florida, offers the kind of real-life detail one would expect from a law enforcement professional. His previous series, which featured Florida cop Bill Tasker (Walking Money, etc.), stood out from the pack largely because of the layered persona of his protagonist. In contrast, Duarte has the requisite toughness, but aside from being a man of few words—particularly around the ladies—his character has few distinguishing features. Hopefully, Born will make his hero more a leading man than a background player in subsequent adventures. (Feb.)

Below standard

Having read all of James Born's published works, I was pleased to see that he had a new offering. The fact that it reprised Alex Duarte made it seem even better. However, it was a disappointment on a number of levels. The plot wandered, the "romance" between Duarte and his forensics friend was labored, and all in all I kept feeling as if I'd read it all before somewhere... and better written. The main complaint though is the extremely annoying editing, particularly as regards firearms. Glocks become SIGs ( often on the same page), SIGs become Berettas, and while it might be acceptable once or twice, it happened throughout the book. Doesn't anyone read for content anymore?! The book could've stood some editing and while some may whine that I'm being too picky about the guns, I'm sure that Born, and indeed anyone with a law enforcement or military background, know that such details are important.

Write again, Mr. Born. But take better care.

Just about perfect

BURN ZONE is the second novel by James O. Born to feature ATF Agent Alex Duarte, one of the most unique, quirky and appealing characters inhabiting contemporary genre fiction. A 30-ish cop's cop who lives in an apartment above his parents' garage (which he shares with his lawyer brother), Duarte is clueless with respect to the women who throw themselves at him and missing a page or two in his Handbook of Social Skills. The only place where he is truly comfortable is on The Job, to which he brings a set of skills both innate and acquired, thus earning the admiration and respect not only of his peers but also (albeit grudgingly) of his adversaries. He is that rare character who is compelling and addicting, the kind of guy men want on their team and women would like by their side.

Duarte is not the only reason that BURN ZONE is required reading for 2008. Born, a special agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, knows the territory well, and his wealth of experiences (derived from stints with the DEA and U.S. Marshals Service) serve him, and ultimately the reader, in good stead. There are two incidents out of many here that especially stand out as having the ring of truth. One takes place at the very beginning of the book and involves the hot pursuit of a drug dealer; the other...well, watch for the scene in which Duarte opens the door of a motel room in Texas.

The primary plot in BURN ZONE, however, centers on a drug sting being carried out jointly by Duarte's ATF and the DEA, with a little help from the FBI thrown in for good measure. Duarte and his DEA counterpart, Felix Baez, are trying to catch Ortiz, a shadowy Panamanian crime lord whose fortune is built on the trafficking of illegal drugs and guns. Duarte and Baez guide a shipment of drugs into the country through the Port of New Orleans, hoping to catch Ortiz in the process. What they don't know is that they are being played. What is actually being shipped along with the drugs is a package meant for a group of white supremacists who intend to implement a plan destined to change America forever --- and incidentally provide Ortiz with fulfilling his own revenge against the United States.

As always, Born's plot development is first rate. Things never go smoothly for anyone, whether it be the drug-dealing, closeted Ortiz, the white supremacists, or U.S. law enforcement, which is hampered as much by its own internecine conflicts as it is by the bad guys. Born's narrative is by turns hilarious --- you will never think of the acronym "HBO" in quite the same way again --- and harrowing, with death never more than a heartbeat away. And Duarte? In addition to everything else, he manages to be a part of one of the better conclusions I've read recently. In fact, it's just about perfect. Don't miss BURN ZONE!

This One Didn't Light My Fire

This novel is the second in the series featuring Alex Duarte, ATF agent living and working in Florida. Alex, whose family is from Paraguay, is now nearly thirty years old, and seems to have commitment issues. His nickname is Rocket, because of his focus and drive; he believes "once you hit your stride, you never let up." He is called in by his friend, DEA agent Felix Baez, working out of the agency's headquarters in West Palm Beach, to assist in the attempt to shut down a smuggling operation run by a mysterious Panamanian named Ortiz--guns and drugs seem to be involved, thereby bringing it under Duarte's jurisdiction as well. With the informal help of his girlfriend, a crime scene tech [or `forensic scientist' as he prefers to think of her], Alex joins the hunt for this infamous and slippery criminal.

The ensuing investigation pits them up not only smugglers, but a white supremacist group intent on "changing America." The man called Ortiz is seen to be a sadistic brute, but sadism is the least of his failings. A helluva combination, as it turns out.

This is a thriller which doubtless will be enjoyed by many. This reader was disappointed, however: Having enjoyed Field of Fire, I expected more from its successor novel in the series. The identity of the alter egos of the two `bad buys' was apparent to me early on, which might have been intentional on the part of the author, perhaps to heighten the suspense--if that was the purpose, it didn't work, at least not for me. The book began with a great opening line, addressed to Alex by his ATF partner: "You ever think we should write some of this b***s*** down and put it in a book?" With the author's background, it just may have originated that way, and while I am sure the scenarios laid out are possible, this thriller just didn't hold up for me. I found the characters almost caricatures and the whole not nearly as well written as the prior entry in the series. That said, I would probably read the next chapter in Alex Duarte's life, in the hope that it will come up to the level seen in Field of Fire.

Not all episodes lead to true crime; perhaps disappointingly, the series' popular "miniatures killer" storylines were not based on cases, but on crime scene dollhouses built in the 1940s as a teaching aid by philanthropist Frances Glessner Lee. Gore and devastation is handled in a responsibly clinical tone, but Ramsland can overstep when speculating without scientific backup or attribution (stating, for instance, that the admiration female sex offenders receive from their young partners is "probably the source of the addiction"). Clunky prose can also distract, but that shouldn't matter to C.S.I. fans, who will enjoy this professional-and professionally morbid-treatment of their favorite T.V. crime dramas.

Katherine Ramsland has written a dozen books and numerous articles and short stories. In the past year she has been editing Vampyre Magazine. After publishing two books in psychology, Engaging the Immediate and The Art of Learning, she wrote Prism of the Night: A Biography of Anne Rice. At the same time she had a cover story in Psychology Today on our culture's fascination with vampires. She followed the biography with several guide books to Anne Rice's fictional worlds including The Vampire Companion: The Official Guide to Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and The Anne Rice Reader. Her last book before Piercing the Darkness was a biography of Dean Koontz called Dean Koontz: A Writer's Biography. She has also written for The New York Times Book Review, The Writer, The Horror Show, The Newark Star Ledger, The Trenton Times, and Publishers Weekly. Ramsland has a master's degree in clinical psychology and a Ph.D. in philosophy. She has been a professor at Rutgers University, a therapist, and a psycho-educator specializing in the psyche's shadow side, and is currently at work on another master's degree--this one in forensic psychology. She lives in Princeton, NJ.

real CSI

This books attempts to show that some CSI programs are based on real crime stories. It is interesting, but it would have been more interesting if fewer stories had been featured and there had been more depth in the ones that were. It was just an OK book.

Great for Use in Class

I teach a forensic science class we occasionally watch episodes of CSI. My students love to read the true stories behind the episodes. The book is easy to read and each section can be read separate from the rest of the book.

Love the In Death Series

I started reading the series with the intention of reading only the first three books. Now, sixteen books later I'm totally and irrevokably hooked.

My sister recommended that I read the first three books to see how Nora Roberts/JD Robb introduces the secondary characters and develops them into stronger characters in progressive books. It's amazing!

Love the story lines and they never get repetitive, especially the love making scenes.

Hope she nevers stops this series!!

This is a series that I NEVER get tired of reading...over...and over again. There is nothing like a full novel written by Nora Roberts to make for an entertainingly scrumptious story that pulls you in and makes you feel homesick in between installments. And, when that installment comes out and you finally have a chance to read it, your back at home with life, death, intrigue and love.

You gotta love Roberts. She makes the best characters and stories.

Also, let me say that Susan Erickson's right on, talented and engrossing professional narration of Roberts' books is like icing on the cake. If you love the book, try it again with the audio enhancements...truly entertaining!

All of the J D Robb In Death series are narrated by Susan Ericksen, a marvelous narrator who does the main character voices so that there is never a doubt who is speaking, and enough variety in miscellaneous characters so that you're never bored. This book has really inspired me to acknowledge things that were bugging me about myself. The author is kind enough to not only pinpoint ideas that can make for a better life but also provides that little nudge at the end of each short,to the point, chapter to move the reader to action. It just all makes so much sense. Ms. Gallagher serves up different items on her suggestion menu in just the right amounts with the perfect flavor for each one. Easy to read, hard to put down, wonderful to share. I think it would be fun to have a close group of friends get together once a week and share their experiences chapter by chapter. I can see where this would make for some great discussion.

Wow-

The title of the book in itself was almost a lifesaver for me. It was exactly what was needed. Gallagher's 'to the core' writing really got through to me. I originally borrowed it from a library, but then knew immedately only a few pages into it that it was going to be a keeper. The book is organzied not in lists of how to improve ones self, but rather it's taken one idea per week, so to speak. It's organized so that an individual can really dive into each self improvement suggestion and get the most out of her teachings.
I got so much out of this book, I'm not only recommending it to other friend, but buying a couple of copies to pass out to friends. I think anyone and everyone can look at this book as a breath of fresh air and feel motivated to make tiny but significant changes.

Worth investing the time

Right now I have this book from the library , but am considering buying it. I do think you have to work it a step at a time and it is a commitment. I read thru the whole thing pretty quickly to get an overall view of the book. A few chapters are a bit cliche but overall I think it's a good book and if you do the work, can really be insightful. I'm not a big fan of Buddha and new age stuff, which she mentions at times, but it seems she was trying to cover all bases, mentioning God, too. It doesn't seemed to be biased one way or the other, which I appreciate because I don't like to be told I need to believe in some philosophy or religion I don't care to. So if you are serious about this and plan to do the work, I think this is a good book. I have put some of the steps already into my own life but plan to go back and go thru it at a slower pace. Good luck on your own personal journey.

The 1st book of the Nauti series

If you are looking for smokin' erotic book with a mystery theme with some group sharing plots - but if you have issues with those themes skip this book and move on to the rest of the this series. I read this series in the wrong order (reading this one last) and I am glad I did. It has some very strong sexual themes and that might have turned me off if I had read it first (but in the end it makes you understand the characaters SOOO much better)

The concept of the story is that Rowdy Mackay is a Marine who just finished his last tour of duty and now has returned to his home town. Kelly and Rowdy have always flirted but because they are step-siblings and a age difference the always kept their distance. Now Rowdy is back but while he was gone Kelly was attacked. Rowdy is determined to find her attacker and make a life with Kelly.

i wont bother with a description seeing its already been done. i just had to say lora leigh is my favorite author i have all of her stories and they are all amazing. if your just getting into leighs books you must get her men of august books and her breed series you wont be dissapointed.

My Very Favorite Cozy Since the First Book in This Series Came Out!

With her latest Booktown Mystery, Bookmarked for Death, Lorna Barrett (aka L.L. Bartlett) has ensconced herself firmly into the role of my favorite contemporary mystery author. She has already long proven herself adept at writing hard-hitting, nail-biting paranormal thrillers (see her Jeffrey Resnick series), but she is really busting out as a fantastic cozy author as well - with a delightful and believable heroine in bookseller Tricia Miles, an interesting and complex supporting cast of characters, and a scintillating plot with a plethora of viable suspects.

This is by far the best cozy I've read in some time (at least since the release of the first Booktown Mystery, Murder is Binding). I can hardly wait until the third book in this wonderful series comes out!

A good rollicking whodunit ...

Stoneham, New Hampshire was one of those towns whose reputation was gained not by its long gone founder nor any battle once waged on its ground, but by the number of bookstores lining its streets. Tricia "Trish" Miles, the proprietor of the Haven't Got a Clue mystery bookstore, could proudly say she contributed to the reputation. Of course Miss Marple, her cat, might just want to raise a paw as she was the one who really ran the store. Book scouts the likes of Larry McMurtry would have a field day in Stoneham, but as a rule the typical buyer tended to be a local bookworm or occasional tourist.

Gossips usually provide enough fodder to keep a small town like Stoneham going for a while, but recently it was the Canada goose population that was wreaking havoc. Just as the poop crisis was beginning to get out of control, something else hit the fan and then there was real trouble. Zoë Carter, big time author, was at Haven't Got a Clue for a book signing. It seemed like everyone in town was there from the members of the Tuesday Night Book Club to Zoë's nasty niece Kimberly. It might be said that a few people, including Zoë, could have taken a few lessons in social skills, but just as things started to tone down, the big time author turned up missing. Where in heck did that gal disappear to?

A quick search of the store found Ms Carter trussed-up like a Christmas goose at a banquet . . . on the commode no less The nonplused Tricia and Miss Marple had yet another murder to solve. Sheriff Wendy Adams was NOT amused. The most recent corpse had a knife sticking in her back and Tricia "discovered" that one as well. With half the town in the store for the big event narrowing down the prime suspect would take some doing. Stoneham, we have a problem and it isn't goose poop.

BOOKMARKED FOR DEATH is the second installment of the Booktown Mystery series, a series that will quickly gain a dedicated readership. If anyone has the formula for a frolicking fun mystery down pat it's Lorna Barrett. The read is light and sheer entertainment. The characters were not heavily fleshed-out, but because I live in a small town I "recognized" them all. CSI buffs need not apply here, but if you want a good rollicking read, by all means, pick up a copy.

A wonderful read; fun, relaxing, well written. Just what I needed to relax at the end of a day. I like to get some clues before the end of the story but also have some surprises at the final revelation. This book did the trick.

Severn House continues to publish hardcover editions of Harris' early paperback orginals. This time it's a southern gothic, featuring a strong female lead in her late twenties. Former model Nickie returns to her hometown to finish college and moves in with her best friend from boarding school. But coming home means more than going back to school as she must deal with her estranged parents and confront her long suppressed feelings for her best friend's older brother. Matters are complicated by the presence of a rapist on campus who attacks both Nickie and her advisor. Convinced that the assailant is someone she knows, Nickie sets out to track him down. Mixing a touch of romance with a suspenseful thriller plot, Harris turns out a top-notch read with wide appeal to genre fans. She doesn't hesitate to tackle tough issues head-on; her college-town setting is realistically and evocatively portrayed; and her cast of characters is nicely multidimensional. Harris is due to conclude her wildly popular Sookie Stackhouse series later this year. a secret rage

"A Secret Rage" is an older Charlaine Harris work, reminiscent of the Lily Bard series. The subject matter is dark & could be too disturbing for some readers; this book is definitely not a cozy. Harris manages to pull of the subject of rape very delicately, mainly because of her strong female lead in Nickie Callahan. We see a woman who had been raped but fights back. She refuses to feel sorry for herself, & she is true to her emotions following the rape.

Another high point of this book, for me, was the theme of the old South meeting with new ways. Harries also deals with racism in a way that rings true, though her book was published over 20 years ago. Somehow, Nickie manages to be a strong woman and a true southern belle, which is a great message for southern women then & today.

Rage and rape

I was torn about this unusual novel, set in a small Southern college town. It had great strengths: a surprisingly strong heroine (a former New York model who returns to the South to finish her college degree), and other characters who grow and develop as a result of their experiences; beautifully established atmosphere; a fast moving, gripping plot; and a serious treatment of the subject of rape. The downside? These strengths seemed at times artificially attached to a pretty ordinary romance/thriller--the key clues and red herrings are practically announced; the timing of the heroine's affair is extremely questionable; and the heroine's belief that the criminal is a certain person, which leads her into the path of danger, is not at all convincing. The specific motivation of the attacker is not compelling.

Without giving anything away, this novel treats rape very realistically indeed. (This is not the book to read if you are in a Miss Jane Marple sort of mood.) The various reactions to these crimes, of both the victims and of their community, are explored, and lives are changed. The climactic scene of "A Secret Rage" is a knockout, and the last few paragraphs are downright eerie.

Worth reading for its frank treatment of a very difficult subject.

Not one of her better stories, but it's her earlier work

I'm a huge Charlaine fan and think I have now read close to 95% of all her work. She's such an interesting writer, however this earlier book just was "okay" I felt. Lagged in parts, wasn't overly exciting and the ending was meh.

A must have for any Harry Potter Collector's Library

This year I planned my son's curriculum around "a year at Hogwarts". I purchased this book as part of that curriculum and was not disappointed. This book was a wonderful addition to our "History of Magic" class. This is a must read for any Potter fans who have wondered about the mythology and history behind your favorite books. The chapters are very short (I might have liked a bit more information for myself) but just the right length to get my son interested and not bore him. I highly recommend it.

Fun and fascinating !

It's fun and fascinating! David Colbert's book entertained me with delightful stories about mythical creatures, real history, ancient mythology and his own speculations on Potter's world. All too brief and lightly illustrated ( it is a very fast "read"), it left me wanting more. It also left me even more delighted with the talents of J. K. Rowling. The weaver of these wonderful tales has woven even more mythology and fact into the Potter books than I had realized. I had not know that Nicholas and Pernelle Flamel were real people (delighted that she had "made" him successful and brought him into the 20th cantury)and had forgotten from Greek mythology, who "Argus" was. While there are a few omissions (no werewolves ?), and a few intepretations I didn't quite agree with (don't we all have an opinion ?), I would recommend the book highly to any fan of the Potter series.

Another winner from Kate Kingsbury

Cecily Sinclair Baxter returns in Shrouds of Holly to solve another murder. Her previous Pennyfoot Hotel Mysteries are No Clue at the Inn and Slay Bells.

It's Christmas and Cecily and her employees are decorating the Pennyfoot ballroom for a festive Christmas reception. With a staff shortage (primarily due to illness) Baxter, Cecily's husband, has reluctantly accompanied Samuel, the stable manager, to collect fresh boughs of holly to complete the decorations.

While Mrs. Chubb, the Pennyfoot housekeeper, was out collecting eggs, the sleigh returned with a dead body (Gavin Hargrove) but minus Baxter and Samuel.

Samuel turns up with a head injury and his only memory is of bending over Baxter's body. Is Baxter badly injured or is he dead? The only thing known for sure is that he has disappeared.

With Baxter missing, the stable manager injured and a dead body outside her establishment, Cecily is determined to investigate. It's important to find the murderer but it's more important to find her husband.

The deceased Gavin Hargrove seems to have had some enemies. He owed money to a London syndicate for gambling debts. His fiancée doesn't seem very upset over his death. What's that about? And his brother is dependent on Gavin's goodwill. With Gavin dead, he inherits his father's wealth.

It's going to be a difficult task to find the murderer since the police think they know who killed Gavin but Cecily is not giving up. Her husband's life may depend on it.

Kingsbury's historical Christmas novels are set in England and are delightful cozy mysteries. I love the laid back feel of the books. They are satisfying plots that keep you turning the page.

FYI: Kate Kingsbury is Doreen Robert's pen name.

Christmas Cozy at the Pennyfoot Hotel or it is Country Club?

Kate Kingsbury is one of my very favorite cozy mystery authors. Shrouds of Holly finds Baxter and Samuel out in the woods looking for holly to help finish the decorating for the Christmas parties to take place at the Pennyfoot. They fail to return, but the horse and cart return with a dead body in it. Samuel finally shows up but the search for poor Baxter leads to alot of sinister activity with the family of the deceased.

I always get caught up in her writing and the characters are so familiar and entertaining. If you love the English countryside with some mystery thrown in and entertaining and lovable characters - you'll love this charming Christmas read.

Nice series to read during the holidays. No deep thinking necessary. A bit repetitive, but likeable central charactors. Perhaps sometime the author will change the familiar setting and see how the heroine solves a mystery away from her home.
