Good buy.

I like it. At first I thought it was missing a lot of words, but ingeniously, the entries are word stems, rather than words. And you get several definitions in one. And therefore more definitions in the book. It may not be the best choice for a beginner, but for intermediate to advanced, who want something toteable and useful, this works.

i really looked forward to this installment of the needlework series--i thought the last two were very good.

the clever title is here, the tortuous plot is here (somewhat less plausible than previous plots in the series), but our sleuth is almost absent, and the rest of the 'regulars' have only walk-on parts.

the series hook, needlework of one kind or another, is present only in a gauzy fashion. almost all the important action takes place away from the shop and without the series detective involved. betsy devonshire steps in at nearly the last moment to reveal the culprit, after minimal clues start appearing to single him out.

there's a lot more padding in this outing than in most of the series--a whole page is devoted to reiterating the family relations, several pages are wasted on the series sleuth's imagining motives and means for all the suspects. there's also a tone of condescension in the description of the antiques that are part of the story--i found it hard to imagine the characters could be so ignorant.

the knitting pattern included, well, it would have been nice to have had at least a line drawing of it. a verbal description is not at all the same thing!

this book is for the reader who simply has to have every volume in a series. i'm giving mine to the library and crossing my fingers for the next book in the series, which i intend to buy used.

Another great entry in the series.

This is one of my favorite series, but after reading the reviews I opened it with some trepidation.

I think that it is as good as always: the complex plot, the dry humor, the mixed feelings of the characters. The characters are, as usual, well-developed. I hope that some of these characters will at least be featured as minor characters in future books. Characters who reappear, even if only intermittently, add to the fullness and reality of the author's universe. I kept promising myself to put it down at the end of the chapter, and ended up reading it through.

One of the things that I like about this book is that it does deal with people and their work, one of the most ignored themes in literature, except for artists and detectives. In this book, the characters discuss the realities of running one's own business. I was very amused in an earlier book when Betsy went from being a tenant complaining about the poor maintenance by a greedy landlord to being the landlord who had to pay for repairs. The people also have a relatively realistic view of money: they like having it, even if they wouldn't necessarily do almost anything to get it. I get very tired of books about wealthy people of leisure, or at least an oddly undemanding job, with an apparently inexhaustible private income.

In this book, except for Betsy and Godwin, the regular cast of characters make only cameo appearances. In itself, I don't find this a problem, although of course I want to see the regulars again, I thoroughly enjoyed these characters. I am a trifle disappointed that there wasn't a book between this one and the last with a subplot centering on Jill and her new baby, but I don't consider it to be a flaw of this book, per se.

Graysmith (Zodiac) mixes film history, true crime, and autobiography with disappointing results in this scattered exploration of the woman behind one of cinema's most memorable scenes. Though his goal is ostensibly to track down Marli Renfro—Janet Leigh's body double in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho—who some believed was raped and murdered in the 1980s, Graysmith takes too long getting there. Detailing the intricate Psycho shoot, which was painstakingly designed by Hitchcock in order to both shock the audience and pass the rigorous censor test, Graysmith introduces readers to Renfro, a gorgeous redhead who came to the film via modeling, some of it nude. Interspersed with Renfro's experiences as an actress, Playboy model, and dancer is an account of the life and crimes of Henry Sonny Busch Jr., a Norman Bates–look-alike in L.A. who strangled three women and had a penchant for Psycho. Graysmith, comparing his own growing obsession with Renfro to the plot of the 1944 film Laura (where the detective also falls for a dead woman after seeing her photograph), is determined to discover what really happened to her. As sloppy as Hitchcock's shower scene was precise, Graysmith's jumbled account never finds its footing, despite the fascinating subject matter. (Feb.)

Well there's a couple of days of my life I'm never getting back...

All right then... let's just say you are a writer who, for decades, has nursed an adolescent crush on a pretty, all-but-unknown actress of sorts who happened to be the body double in the famous Psycho shower scene. Say that you have always longed to "tell her story". Problem is, there really isn't a whole lot of story for you to tell. At least not one that's remotely interesting to anyone other than, perhaps, the actress, her family & friends. Oh! and, of course, you the still-smitten writer. So you add A) some standard issue "behind the scenes" anecdotes about the film Psycho and B) a meandering narrative about a real-life serial killer who was said to have been inspired by said film. Throw in a few scraps about the early days of Playboy magazine and some obscure (for a reason) "Vegas in the '60s" stories and voila! A dull, disjointed mess of a book is born! My advice is to save your time and money and give this vanity project a pass.

COMPELLING PREMISE -- AWKWARDLY WRITTEN

I was fascinated by the mystery of what happened to Janet Leigh's body double for Hitchcock's "Psycho" shower scene. Was she murdered by a real life psycho who patterned his crimes after his movie doppelganger?

Robert Graysmith's 40-year personal obsession with pin-up model and part-time actress Marli Renfro does not pay off in his sloppily written riff that tries to be a crime novel with a twist.

Oddly structured with no real theme, the two -- or is it three? -- stories do not really merge at any point. And the big pay off is disappointing in that we do not really get any sense of the true life or mystery of the body double.

This story -- it's not really a novel -- reads like an overwritten, unedited, first draft.

On every page there's a hint of a wonderful noir tale of the darkside of Hollywood and the seductive lure of that shadowy place between reel and real life where the fantasies are manufactured.

Warm and Breathless

A tattooed, Harley riding bad ass. What's not to love? Brody is the older brother to his two siblings Adrian and Erin. Nearing forty, he owns a successful tattoo shop, a nice home, and enjoys a satisfying life knowing both of the siblings he raised are settled in successful careers and happy. Surrounded by family and good friends, life is good for Brody.

Elise, a former ballerina, and now owner of dance studio, moves in across the street from Brody, hoping to establish a quiet life for her and her young daughter Rennie. She's rebuilding her life after a violent relationship with Rennie's father and hoping to escape her former in-laws who seem bent on making her life a living hell.

A freak accident brings their worlds together and they begin an amazing friendship that will eventually change their lives in ways neither of them ever expected.

Fresh off my high of reading Laid Bare I hoped that Coming Undone would be every bit as good. Well, it's not--it's even better in my opinion.

Brody is sexy on so many levels. Besides his obvious physical appeal, he's the guy you know you can count on without even asking when times get rough. He's the protector, the fixer, the gentle giant. He possesses a self assured sexuality without being cocky and just the right amount of confidence to curl your toes.

Elise is an independent, dedicated single mother who is determined to leave her past behind and create a happy, safe home for herself and her young daughter. Although she has been through hell and back, Elise is strong and seeks no pity from her friends. Young and sexy she discovers that wounds from the past have not permanently scarred her spirit or her sensual nature.

Both Laid Bare and Coming Undone are centered around families and their relationships, but I did wonder how a young child would fit into this erotic romance. Lauren Dane handled this beautifully developing the relationships appropriately, without portraying the child as an obstacle in the developing emotional relationship between Elise and Brody. Instead Rennie, Elise's daughter, captures everyone's hearts around her with her sweet honesty and sunny personality. She is truly charming.

Elise and Brody have blazing hot chemistry and waste no time in heating things up. Because both are busy business owners and Elise is first and foremost a mom who puts her daughter first, they have to be creative with their private time together. This makes for great spontaneous sexual situations and they learn to seize the opportunities as they present themselves. Translation: hot sex in a very mirrored dance studio between dance classes, hot desk sex at the tattoo shop...you get the picture. During their first unplanned sexual encounter:

"He pulled out a lone condom, checked the expiration date and breathed a sign of relief. He'd need to make a donation somewhere that afternoon when he left, to thank the universe for that luck."

For those of you who loved Todd, Erin and Ben from Laid Bare, don't worry, you haven't heard the last of them or their very interesting relationship. You'll get a small peek into their lives as they've moved from newly weds to marital bliss and yes, you even get a little encore Erin/Todd/Ben ménage bonus.

Once again, Lauren Dane weaves a sexy tale of love and romance with characters that are firmly grounded in family and emotionally sound. The sensual nature of her characters will keep you warm and breathless as you follow them through the ups and downs of discovering new friendships and finding love.

Great sexy love story

Lauren Dane is amazing. First she gave us Erin, Todd, and Ben to fall in love with in "Laid Bare." Now, with Brody's story, she's made me fall even harder. There is nothing unlovable about Brody Brown. He has the looks and sexuality of a bad boy, with the heart and soul of the most sensitive and loving man ever born. While he takes charge and does everything necessary to take care of those he loves, he tries hard to keep those urges dialed down, since Elise's past with an abusive husband make his controlling behavior a hot button for her. When Elise lets herself accept that Brody really just wants to do anything to make sure she and her daughter Rennie are happy, she is better able to accept his personality and stop keeping her past from him. Elise is a strong person, even without Brody in her life, and she is determined not to become another "burden" to him. Rennie is a loving and funny little girl who makes Brody and his family fall in love with her, too. I absolutely loved this book, and I can't recommend it enough.
I was also thrilled to read more about Erin and Brody's younger brother, rock star Adrian. I hope he gets his own story soon, because he stole most every scene he was in, as far as I'm concerned. He is another honest and trustworthy and hot and fabulous man, and he deserves his own happily ever after!
The next book in the series comes out in November, and it will be the story of Ben's brother Cope and Erin's employee Ella. That one should be great, as well.

Ho Hum Tale of Friends With Benefits (C+ Grade)

Have you ever read a book that everyone really seems to enjoy, but you find yourself having the opposite reaction? This has happened to me in the case of Lauren Dane's Coming Undone. I've been a big fan of Lauren's past work and she really does write some of the best love scenes out there. But with Coming Undone, I felt something was missing. The plot didn't keep my interest because the plot came across as too ho-hum, and the fact that the two main characters use each other for the soul purpose of being each other's booty call didn't give me that feel of a sexy and smoldering romance I usually think in terms of a Lauren Dane book.

Coming Undone is a sequel of sorts to Laid Bare, which I didn't read. But I will say that I was able to catch up with the characters in a way I wasn't confused. The heroine of this tale is Elise Sorenson who has come to Seattle, Washington with her daughter Rennie where they can have a fresh start. After a disastrous abusive marriage that left her unable to ever dance ballet professionally again, Elise has hope she can live without fear. But, she still has to contend with her deceased husband's parents, especially her horrid ex-mother-in-law, who is making plans to take Rennie away from her.

What Elise doesn't count on is her tattooed, Harley riding neighbor Brody Brown, who sends wonderful shivers down her spine. It's been a very long time since she has had any sexual release with another man. She knows he is very wrong for her because of his lifestyle, but can't help but wonder what it would feel like to have Brody's goateed mouth pressed against her own. Brody is very interested in this widow, even though he thinks she would never be attracted to a man like him because he owns a tattoo shop and is constantly surrounded by a group of rowdy siblings and friends. Brody takes a big chance and admits his attraction to Elise. He visits her at her dance studio and comes out and says, "I think we should expand our friendship to friends who have sex." And since Elise would love nothing more than to have sex with Brody, she hops at the chance and they become friends with benefits.

These two engage in a hot and heavy affair where they can't stay away from one another. These two have quickies all over the place. Soon their physical attraction changes into something deeper and Brody can't help but want Elise and Rennie as a permanent fixture in his life. A big plus is his sister Erin (heroine from Laid Bare), thinks Elise and her precocious daughter would be perfect Brody. He just has to figure out a way to keep his ex-lover Raven at bay who still wants him for her own, as well as Elise's ex-in laws who harass her to the point where she thinks she'll loose Rennie forever.

Coming Undone is a very simple read, meaning there's not a great deal of action, unlike her past few books. I found myself wanting something more and something deeper to happen because the majority of the scenes had an incredible amount of interaction with many characters. There is a great amount of dialogue and scenes of everyday life that just didn't thrill me. I also wasn't turned on by the many scenes of Brody and Elise having quick sex. Their passion came across a bit too stilted and calculating for me to really enjoy.

Brody is a wonderfully written hero and Elise is well rounded, but I felt their chemistry was more tepid than hot, and their "let's rip off our clothes and go at it" love making too cool. At one point I thought Elise and Brody would be better as just friends than lovers. The only real external conflict is Elise worried about Rennie being taken away from her clichéd villainous ex mother-in-law and Brody having to deal with the rebel like Raven who feels she has a claim on him because they were lovers in the past. I waited, hoping for a big reveal or something explosive, but it never came.

There's a lack of depth and overall conflict in Coming Undone, but for those who like a read in the terms of what you see, is what you get, then this latest by Lauren Dane is for you.

Inspiring Hope for Christians

I didn't read the subtitle closely enough. I was expecting this book to expand upon what he saw when he went to heaven, but as I started reading it I noticed that that was not the purpose of this book. This one talks about how his life has changed since his 90 minutes in heaven. The issues he brings up help you to examine your own life.

The bridge is the analogy he uses throughout the book, i.e., in his case his life changed forever once he crossed a bridge that led to his accident. Even small choices affect our lives he points out. One of the themes he keeps coming back to is that touching other people's lives is validating in that God intends for us to serve other people. We need other people and they need us. Piper said it was easier for him to serve than be served, but a hard lesson he accepted in regaining meaning to his life was in learning to let other people serve him.

For people going through difficult times that permanently change who they are, Piper offers well-thought out advice. He encourages them to accept the new realities and not try to go back to a past that will never exist again.

He tells a story about a commencement speaker who asked the graduates "Do you want to be remembered for what you did for yourself--how much money you made, the kind of car you drove, the size of the house you lived in? Or do you want people to remember what you did for others--your kindness and compassion; your generosity of time, money, and spirit; the testimony you freely shared to bring others to Christ?"

This book accomplishes its goal of helping readers to reflect on what their time on this earth is really about. Building a spiritual legacy is the life well-lived.

Powerful - touching - great writing

I picked this book up before a long cross-country flight. I could not stop reading it. I actually finished it between Phoenix and Charlotte!

The best description I can give you of this book is that the author puts you there - in the scenes with him. Not many writers can pull that off effectively.

When he describes the accident scene where he is covered in a sheet, and his friend is pleading with the officer to uncover him because he is alive - you feel as though you are right there, wanting to tap the officer on the shoulder and say - "Give him a chance."

When he describes the physical beauty of heaven and the streets literally of translucent gold, you just feel like you are surrounded by the brilliance of the moment.

Christians will be very touched by the "realness" of this perspective. That Heaven does exist, that our loved ones will welcome us, and that the peace and happiness you feel is beyond all human understanding.

Be prepared to be touched, laugh a little, get choked up a couple of times, and generally enjoy this unique and fascinating walk we will all take someday.

On February 13, 2003, I almost died, during brain tumor surgery. An operation that was supposed to take four hours, took 8 ½ hours, due to bleeding in my brain. I am blessed, and feel I was saved, for a reason. Any time I have an opportunity, to talk with anyone that is going to be going through brain surgery, I go out of my way, to share my experience, with the patient, and their family. I firmly believe, that no Doctor can get a brain tumor patient, prepared, for what they are going to go through, better than I can. NOTE 1: If you read my prior review on Don's earlier book "90 Minutes In Heaven." I have written the same personal biography as above. The reason I have done this, is to establish my credibility, as a "witness" to my comments regarding this book. Just as important as offering my experience before surgery, my tutelage, as to what to expect after surgery, is even more important. That phase of life on earth; the after, is what the heart of Don's story is about.

After losing a loved one. After losing physical, or mental capabilities, that is where Don's experience is most helpful, and he encourages people who have lived through experiences like mine, to make their time and experience available, to ease the suffering of patients, and their family members. But! Only Don, can give the comfort of what heaven is like for the departed. NOTE 2. I strongly recommend that you read Don's book: "90 Minutes In Heaven." before this book. The impact, of this book, will be greater for the reader, when you see the tremendous growth in Don himself, due to his acceptance, of why he was brought back to earth.

Perhaps the most important statement made in this book, is about accepting the "NEW NORMAL". You can't dwell on the way things used to be. You have to do everything you can to accept, and regroup, to what you're left with. And one last thing: Make sure you let your loved ones help you! They've been traumatized also, and the only way they can feel as if they're heeling is by helping you.

superb Texas historical romance

In 1855 although he would have preferred not to accept the job, Whispering Mountain Ranch horse breeder Tobin McMurray knows the fee is too good to pass up; so he agrees to deliver a horse to Liberty Mayfield, daughter of a senator. He also to his chagrin accepted the stipulation that he teach Liberty to ride the steed.

Upon arriving at the Mayfield spread, Tobin is shocked to find his student avoiding her cold-blooded demanding fiancé Captain Samuel Buchanan in the barn from her. As he teaches her to ride, he also in his quiet way shows her how to be strong. When someone tries to assassinate her father, Tobin helps Liberty escape. As the reticent rancher and the fearful female head to the safety of his grandfather's Apache tribe, they fall in love. However, Buchanan is coming for her with help because he wants to control the Mayfield fortune.

Texas historical romance readers will cherish the latest winner from Jodi Thomas due to the lead couple; as each has people issues. The fast-paced story line never misses a beat once Tobin and Liberty meet. Although Buchanan is too brutal to be in the running for the caring Liberty, this is a terrific Thomas Texas tale.

Absolutely Wonderful!

The second book of Ms Thomas's Whispering Mountain trilogy, this story features the youngest brother, Tobin McMurray. For someone who doesn't like to talk to people, he doesn't have any trouble when it comes to Liberty Mayfield. That's because she speaks the language of the heart. When she needs a rescuer, he doesn't hesitate. Through the course of the story, Tobin's thoughts are always on Liberty's safety and security, regardless of any danger he's in. He's the type of strong silent hero that I dream of having. True to the Code of the West, although he's an expert shot, he never draws his gun unless he has to and then it's with deadly accuracy. Of the three brothers, Tobin is the most sensitive to the needs of others. After his sister receives the news that her fiance has been killed, he's the one who comforts her. An especially moving scene is the fiance's burial on Whispering Mountain.

This was a very well crafted, deeply emotional story of love triumphing over evil and justice for the lawless. The book satisfied me and left me wanting more. I won't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who's looking for high excellence in western romance. I can't wait to see Ms Thomas's next story in this trilogy. I know it'll be great.

Great Debut Novel!

I've been a little leery of reading debut authors lately after one too many bad experiences, so I admit I did hesitate in picking up this book (even though I loved the cover and it kept drawing me back to it). Definitely a mistake on my part. Just the Sexiest Man Alive is one of the best debut novels I've read in a very long time! As a fan of virtually every sub-genre in romance, I found it surprisingly refreshing to have a light-hearted, sweet, romantic storyline without a vampire or serial killer in sight. Contemporary romance seems to be on a downward shift lately and authors are more frequently jumping onto the paranormal bandwagon (which I am a fan of, but every now and then you just want to pick up a nice boy-meets-girl story without a lot of subplots and angst involved).

This book follows a somewhat simple premise, but puts a unique spin on it. Yes, boy-meets-girl, boy-ticks-off-girl, hate at first sight ensues, but the difference being that girl is a very successful lawyer and boy is "The Sexiest Man Alive" (three times over) and the biggest name in Hollywood. An unbelievable plot told in a very believable way. When Taylor Donovan finds out she is supposed to "coach" Hollywood playboy Jason Andrews for his new upcoming legal thriller that he's scheduled to film, she's initially star struck. But after a no-show (twice) on his part, she's not impressed when he saunters into the courtroom two days late and a dollar short.

These two characters start their first scene off with a bang and the witty banter (especially during their first meeting) kept me turning the pages. There is sexual tension in nearly every scene - although actual consummation of said tension is very limited. I finished it in less than a day and actually found it hard to put down.

If you're looking for a light contemporary romance, this is definitely a book I would recommend. If her next book is as good as this one, I've found a new autobuy author!

I read the first editorial review and "almost" clicked off to look at another book and I am glad I did not. If you are into vampires, murder or lots of sex..this is NOT the book for you. If you like contemporary romance books with a great story and lots of humor..THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU! Publishers Weekly missed this book by a mile on their review. I loved this book so much that from now on if Publishers Weekly gives a book a bad review...I'm probably going to buy the book.
This story is about Taylor Donovan, a lawyer that has moved to L.A. to cover a sexual harassment trial. Busy with the trial her boss asks her to also help Jason Andrews prepare for his upcoming film where he plays a lawyer. Jason blows off their first appointments and that gets him off on the wrong foot with her. Good looking and People's Sexiest Man, Jason is used to women falling over themselves for him not getting in the last word and walking away. It is a fun filled book from beginning to end.
Jason't long time friend, Jeremy is a hoot in the book (a book with him would be good). In my opinion this book compairs to Susan Elizabeth Phillips books. I love her humor.
I read where Julie's next book is also about lawyers. I was disappointed when I read the preview at the back of the book...I was thinking the new book would be lawyers from Taylor's law firm. Didn't want the story to end...(-:

3.5 Stars and Worth the read . . .

This is most definitely NOT a 5 star book: for the majority of the story, our 38 year old hero has the social maturity of a pampered, rich, spoiled and horny 17 year who just got his first car, and the emotional depth of a puddle. The villain in the piece is not even that lucky -- the entire time he's portrayed as a two-dimensional caricature of the self-absorbed Hollywood "bad boy" the tabloids love to write about.

On the other hand, this story deserves at least 3 stars because it is well written, funny, and provides an interesting peek into the life of the Hollywood elite, without trying to titillate or go overboard on the details. Most importantly, the story is saved by a delightful female lead that is much more well-developed and interesting than just about any man in the story. In fact, this is true with all the females in the story, which is a surprise in itself. The heroine is very likeable: she's quick-thinking, confident and intelligent. She is an extremely successful litigator but she does not act superior or condescending around others, nor is she pedantic. She is witty, clever and has a wonderfully sarcastic view of things, which brings a much-needed breath of fresh air to the tale.

I gave this story an extra half star for two reasons: first, as improbable as it seemed at the start, I eventually bought into the hero's "real" persona and even rooted for the lovebirds in the end . . . so when all was said and done, the romance managed to feel credible.

Second, I enjoyed the book's clever repartee (both between the romantic leads, and when the heroine is going back and forth with the opposing counsel in a trial) enough that I know I will want to read this story again at some point just for the laughs. In that regard, certain aspects of the story (lots of LOL moments, pithy remarks, smart and competent leads) were reminiscent of some of my favorite Kristan Higgins stories as well as some of my favorite historical romances by writers such as Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Teresa Medeiros and Amanda Quick. Plus, interestingly enough this story was sexy feeling without having a lot of sex in it - which also reminds me of the writers noted above - and which I found to be a nice change of pace as well.

I discovered this author last weekend, and spent a few days reading what I think overall is a great series.

Maybe if I hadn't just read The Cat, it might have been different, but I was dissapointed. The first third of The Storm, was in essence a re-write of The Cat. At times cut and pasting entire scenes from one book to the other, simply switching point of view. It seemed I'd paid good money to read a book I'd just read.

That said there were great things about the book: Rydan's isolation is explaned and solved nicely. And the continuing quest to create a new country is wonderful; I'd like to see more of the political aspects described as the series winds down. And finally, once Johnson got into fresh story-telling the book soared....

So for the cheap re-use of The Cat as the first third of The Storm, I gave one star... for the next two thirds of the book, I gave 5 stars....

Sadly this gives what could have been one of the best books in the series a 3 star...

The book is worth reading. Skim the rewritten bits and get to the meat of the story!

Great book in a great series

I really enjoyed this book. The world building here places it a step above above your standard romantic fantasy novel. I happen to love stories that show you the same thing from two different points of view and that's what The Storm and The Cat do. And I really loved the way we learned so much about Morganen - I'm much more excited about his book now. But mostly this was Rydan and Rora's story and it lived up to my expectations (which were pretty high). Ms Johnson did a very good job of explaining Rydan's behavior in a believable and sympathetic manner. Sometimes it does take an outsider to be able to see a problem clearly and that is what Rora is able to do. For those people who don't like Kelly, (she is a bit of a Hillary Clinton figure and I like her very much) she makes only a small, relatively restrained appearance in this story. The book is not perfect and I did have a few quibbles but overall I thought it was a terrific addition to this excellent series.

THE STORM is a must-read for fans of the Sons of Destiny Series! Fantastically entertaining, wildly imaginative, and thoroughly engrossing - I read it at one sitting. One of the strongest volumes in the series, it is a face-paced thrill ride that successfully incorporates all the main characters from the previous novels. Arora is an engaging heroine and Rydan proves to be a deserving and unflawed leading man. Their developing romance deals with the challenge of overcoming genuine problems rather than self-imposed barriers. The author again brings elements of humor to the developing family dynamics, and ably captures the essence of the love and exasperation found in any caring family. The story stands on its own merits more successfully than some of the prior novels, but is more enjoyable if read in sequence. This is a home-run for lovers of paranormal fantasy!
