I can't wait to see the movie!
By Shadowcat
Having seen both of the previous movies (The Mummy & The Mummy Returns), I decided to buy the book - The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and found it a rather enjoyable read. The book starts off in The Dragon Emperor's day and shows the reader what sort of man he was. The next chapter moves to the current day. The book is filled with the action in the typical style of The Mummy. While reading it, I found that I was able to visualise the characters who had been in the The Mummy movies saying the dialogue and the manner in which they say it (such as Rick & Evy O'Connell and Evy's brother Jonathon). After reading The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor I can't wait until the movie is released here in Australia (September 11).

The book is better than the movie!
By Buchwurm
I have been a fan of the mummy movies from the beginning and was excited about the 3rd installment. I saw the movie and was so dissapointed.

But my dissapointment subsided when I read this book! It is so much better than the movie and makes up for the holes the movie script has created in the O'Connel storyline.

The author has a way of writing that brings the characters to life!

If the script writers had read this book first the movie would have been great!

From Publishers Weekly
Cussler and Dirgo, coauthors of two nonfiction books (The Sea Hunters; The Sea Hunters II) team up this time to debut a new action-filled series, dubbed the Oregon Files, equal to any in the Cussler franchise. An organization of intelligent and superbly proficient mercenaries, known as the Corporation, is headquartered on the ship Oregon, a seagoing marvel of science and technology disguised as an ancient, rust-bucket cargo vessel. The leader of the Corporation-cool, brainy Chairman Juan Cabrillo-explains the mission of his organization: "We were formed to make a profit, that's for sure, but as much as we like the money, we are also cognizant of the chances that arise for us to somehow right the wrongs of others." They've been secretly hired by the U.S. government to find and acquire an ancient statue known as the Golden Buddha, stolen from the Dalai Lama upon his ouster from Tibet by the Chinese in 1959. An intricate plan is then set in motion culminating in the defeat of the Chinese in Tibet and the ascension of the Dalai Lama to his rightful place as the leader of the country. The list of characters, both good and evil, is long and sometimes confusing, but a useful directory is supplied. Cabrillo and crew are adept at high finance and diplomacy, playing the Russians off against the Chinese and winning over the United Nations. But it's the technology, real and imagined, that steals the show with awe-inspiring secret weapons and spy gear that the Defense Department would kill for. Readers will burn up the pages following the blazing action and daring exploits of these men and women and their amazing machines.

From Booklist
It all started with Raise the Titanic (1976)--the point at which avid readers of adventure fiction date their "fanship" with Cussler. This, his third book with Dirgo, is the first novel in a new series called the Oregon Files. The cast of characters is headed by one Juan Cabrillo, the so-called chairman of the board of the Oregon, ostensibly a regular hauler but really a state-of-the-art intelligence-gathering ship that carries secret cargo and is armed with missiles and torpedoes. Working for the CIA, Cabrillo and a crew of former naval officers have been asked to return Tibet to the control of the Dalai Lama by making a deal with the Chinese and the Russians. This depends on finding a golden Buddha that contains maps and records related to Tibet's oil reserves. There's lots of talk about modern technology and stolen art, and the novel has its share of narrow escapes. What is evident from the start is that the good guys will prevail in the end, but even with the dearth of suspense, Cussler fans won't be disappointed. George Cohen

Reviews have a purpose!
By Mike
I have read most of Cusslers Dirk Pitt books and decided to start on the Oregon Series. I looked over the reviews for the 1st and 2nd books in the series. For both books the 1-3 star reviews outweighed all others. Hint! I started with book 3 and finished the series. I decided to take a chance on Golden Budda. I don't know who wrote this book but it wasn't Cussler.

Way to many characters called operatives with little or no description. I'd go as far as to say there were more operators than an old Bell South switchboard. If I hadn't read later books in the series I would have never known what was going on, who was who or finished the book.
Many of the chapters had multiple sub chapters causing me to pause and figure out what country I just got transferred to.
The book was also filled with useless filler info.

I am not a great book reviewer but this book through me for a loop. I never thought a Cussler book could be this bad. Gave it 2 stars because I am a Cussler fan. If you must read it, buy used paperback for a few dollars.

Note: Book 3 and on are great.

Poorly written
By Spoke Folk
The phrase At the same instant, or instantly was used 56 times in this book. Juvenile phrases like "make like an egg and scramble" were spoken by Cabrillo. Given it was the first in the series and the characters weren't developed but I found this a tedious and poorly written book.

This was the first Clive Cussler novel I've read and I thought it was very disjointed, too many characters introduced without enough development.

Harper Connelly has what you might call a strange job: she finds dead people. She can sense the final location of a person who's passed, and share their very last moment. The way Harper sees it, she's providing a service to the dead while bringing some closure to the living - but she's used to most people treating her like a blood-sucking leech. Traveling with her step-brother Tolliver as manager and sometime-bodyguard, she's become an expert at getting in, getting paid, and getting out fast. Because for the living it's always urgent - even if the dead can wait forever.

From Publishers Weekly
Ever since Harper Connelly survived a zap from a lightning bolt, she's been able to find dead people, a skill that makes the protagonist in the first installment of Harris's new series a tad more bizarre than the mind-reading heroine of the author's Sookie Stackhouse books (Dead as a Doornail, etc.). Harper travels to the Ozark town of Sarne, Ark., to find a missing teenage girl's body, accompanied by her stepbrother, Tolliver, who acts as her manager and bodyguard and with whom she shares a thinly disguised physical attraction that they manage to keep at bay by engaging in casual sex with various partners. Finding the body takes no time at all, but leaving town afterward isn't so easy. When Harper's life is threatened and Tolliver ends up in jail on trumped-up charges, it quickly becomes apparent that something sinister is going on in Sarne. Harris delivers a knuckle-gnawing tale populated with well-developed, albeit edgy characters. A nifty puzzle toward the end will challenge the most jaded mystery buffs.

From Booklist
Prolific author Harris debuts a series that just might surpass all her others in popularity. Harper Connolly is honest, ethical, loyal, and, in many people's eyes, quite odd. Since being hit by lightning, Harper has a strange gift: she can find dead people and reveal how they died. Harper is so down-to-earth and delivers the story in such a straightforward way that even the most hardened realist eventually will accept the premise. In this first outing, Harper and her manager and stepbrother Tolliver travel to a small town in Arkansas to determine what happened to a local teenager. Once there, they learn that someone is willing go to great lengths--even murder--to bury a secret. While absorbing the usual mixture of awe, revulsion, and fear that her "gift" inspires in the locals, Harper tries to uncover the secret they are trying desperately to hide. Future stories may shed more light on Harper and Tolliver's relationship, which seems curiously close for a sister and stepbrother. A strong debut that will have readers dying for more. Jenny McLarin

A friend for Sookie
By Tom Knapp
Charlaine Harris is a gifted writer, plain and simple. Her Sookie Stackhouse vampire novels have kept me well entertained, while my wife enjoys Harris's more straightforward mysteries. Now, this talented imagination has conjured up a new kind of heroine who straddles the line between mystery and contemporary fantasy: Harper Connelly.

Harper is no action hero. She's not a brilliant detective or slayer of evil. She has no supernatural origins, nor does she have a relationship with any kind of undead creature. No, Harper's world is largely mundane, with one major difference. Ever since she was struck by lightning, she's been afraid of thunderstorms, she is weak in one leg ... and she can sense the location and final moments of the dead. That makes her a valuable commodity to those seeking answers, closure for a loss or the location of a missing (presumed dead) loved one. It also makes her somewhat unclean in the eyes of many, a ghoul who makes her living off the dead and, quite often, supplies answers no one is eager to hear. Still, she travels with her stepbrother, Tolliver Lang, and does what good she can -- for a profit -- without getting too involved in the lives (or deaths) of those she encounters.

But then she and Tolliver roll into Sarne, a small town in the Arkansas Ozarks with a few big secrets. The job seems easy at first, just find a missing teenage girl. But answers to one disappearance lead to further questions about other deaths, and soon the siblings are wrapped up in a criminal case that could cost Harper her professional reputation -- or even her life.

Harper is a darker protagonist than Sookie, and the tone of the book is more serious; there is humor, but it's painted with a much lighter brush. Also, while Harper's "power" is certainly fantastic, the novel otherwise is entirely grounded in reality. The characters, major and minor, seem so damn real, it's hard to believe they were just invented for this book.

Delightful, riveting
By Debra Morse
What a great new series from Charlaine Harris! I can barely wait until the next installment.

Heroine Harper Connelly can find dead people. She's kind of an energy sensing cadaver dog of a medium: able to feel the vibrations of the dead and discern how they died. In some ways Harper is reminiscent of Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake: she uses her paranormal skills in both private enterprise, and as part of police forensic investigations. And,like Anita, most of the time the people doing the hiring don't really like to hear what Harper has to tell them.

Harper is assisted and protected by her stepbrother Tolliver. The relationship between these two is complex, to say the least, and it will be wonderful to watch them develop in coming volumes. Harris writes skillfully yet playfully, and develops her characters in a strong, appealing fashion. All of the groundwork for a fantastic series is beautifully established here in Grave Sight.

In this first installment, Harper and Tolliver travel to the Ozarks to find a missing teenaged girl, presumed dead. They find her body deep in a wood, and plunge even deeper into small town intrigue, deception, secrecy, and murder. With conservative bigotry welling up around them, can Harper and Tolliver get away with their lives? Well, of course they can: there are many more books ahead, and I suspect we shall all of us buy them up like hotcakes. This new character is a winner.

interesting new series
By E Rice
i pre-ordered this title because it was by charlaine harris. i expected a new volume in her roe teagarden series.

i'm definitely not disappointed that it's the start of a new series. i enjoy her southern vampire series also. this book, however, is darker in tone and outlook than the others i've enjoyed(haven't read the shakespeare series yet).

the main characters, harper and her brother, are interesting and well-drawn. the results of the family background are realistic. i can't agree with the comment that there is any sexual tension between the two.

the experienced mystery reader will probably figure out who-dun-it fairly easily, but that doesn't detract all that much from the book.

the least appealing part of the story was the townspeople. those involved with the mystery were almost completely unsympathetic. realistic, yes. but i can encounter enough unpleasant, selfish and repellent people going to the grocery store to want to spend my reading time with so many of them--not to mention that i try to control my impulse to complete cynicism when possible.

i will definitely read the next book in this series. i have faith in harris. i just hope her next book is another sukey stackhouse.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of Spencer's bestselling paperback historical novels ( Vows ; The Gamble ) will be pleased by her hardcover debut, again demonstrating her gift for telling a satisfyingly conventional romantic tale in fresh, sprightly prose. Tall, dark and handsome Will Parker has served time for the killing of a Texas prostitute, but keeps losing jobs as his reputation becomes known. In the small town of Whitney, Ga., at the beginning of WW II, he answers the advertisement of a pregnant widow and mother of two, the abused and reclusive Eleanor Dinsmore, who is looking for a husband. Soon in love with ostensibly plain, bedraggled Ellie, Parker dotes on her two boys, and works to support the family. Fittingly for this sort of bucolic idyll, Will and Ellie, despite their rudimentary educations, love books and develop a special friendship with wise old Miss Beasley, the local librarian. Alas, brazen and rapacious Lula Peak, the town floozie, sets her sights on Will, waylaying him in the library; meantimes, Lula is blackmailing her lover, the cowardly Harley Overmire, who is no friend of Will. The clearly drawn characters fulfill their imperativesincluding Will, who becomes a war heroand all is neatly and pleasingly resolved. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates.

Morning Glory, by LaVyrle Spencer
By Mellanie C.
MORNING GLORY is set in the 1940s and is the story of "Crazy" Elly Dinsmore, raised by religious fanatics and teased and tormented by everyone in town; and Will Parker, an ex-con trying to put his life back together. Elly is a young, pregnant widow who, when she finds she can't make ends meet, puts an ad for a husband in the local paper. Will sees the ad and applies for the job. As Will begins making repairs and improvements to Elly's property, their attraction to each other grows. World War Two intervenes, and Will is called up for service, but he and Elly write to each other frequently, and manage a visit when Will has leave.
Shortly after Will comes home from the war, he is accused of murdering the local floozy, and Elly must overcome her personal demons in order to help with Will's trial. How the two misfits find each other and their place in their community is a deeply engrossing story. Spencer excels at emotional writing, and in this book, she outdoes herself with her secondary characters, especially Gladys Beasley, the town librarian, who strikes up an incongruous friendship with Will. This book has everything: romance, humor, pathos, mystery, and history. This is my personal favorite of LaVyrle's books, and it has held up to several repeat readings.

Spencer does it again...(4 1/2 stars)
By M. I.
It always amazes me how consistently brilliant Lavyrle Spencer is. Even if Im not crazy about all of her books, there is no arguing that the woman can write.... "Morning Glory" is a perfect example of Spencer's enormous talent for making the characters and the scenery enveloping them leap to life. "Morning Glory" was a heartwarming tale of Will and Elly- two lost souls who had known little happiness in their lives, but who found love in eachother. I LOVED this book. I thought that the characters growth was a wonder to watch and I enjoyed every moment. My only quibble with this book was that I felt that there wasn't enough romantic tension...Elly and Will proclaimed their love too early on for my taste, but regardless the story was enthralling. All in all a fantastic read...

You won't be disappointed!!
By A Customer
I think that this is by far LaVyrle Spencer's best book. The story is wonderful and it touches everyone. Elly and Will are misfits that find joy with each other. When Will is accused of a terrible crime, you have to see if Elly and Will's love for each other is strong enough for them to overcome it. Everyone can relate to the characters. Elly is known as "Crazy Elly Dinsmore" and she was always teased as a child. The reader might see themself because they were a child that was teased or they might remember the Elly Dinsmore's that they knew. This book is exceptionally well written and longer than some of Spencer's other books, which is a definite plus. This is a novel that you would definitly want to have a sequel. Read it and find yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Fascinating and well-told, another good book from Crandell
By Concord Hill
While anticipating arrival of this book, I resisted the urge to Google the story. I knew there would be true crime sites that told the facts, but I wanted to "hear" Doug Crandell tell the story. I'm glad I waited. As other reviewers have said, there is a lot more to this book than just police reports and courtroom documentary. As always, Doug Crandell gives the characters full life, letting us experience the crippled psyche of the killer and the powerful spirits of the survivors. Having said all that, I appreciate the suspensefully told story which reads, at times, like a good murder mystery.

A Good True Crime Pick
By Rehey
I've read a good deal of true crime-- everything from Truman Capote's In Cold Blood to handfuls of titles available in mass market paperback. Truthfully, this crime is not unbelievably exceptional (Heidler goes from being a troubled child to a troubled adult that ends up murdering a family he peripherally knows), but it really is the way Crandell writes that allows the reader to feel there is something worthwhile and at stake here in reading this. How does a child end up this way? How does something like this impact other people? The community? An individual life? Of course these questions aren't ever able to be fully answered, and isn't that the point? While telling a complete, factual story, Crandell gets the reader to reflect on all the things we'll never know.

This is a Well-written Book
By Joel Simon Hochman
So many true crime books are devoted almost entirely to the trial of the accused and could be written by anyone with access to the court records. "Fear Came to Town: The Santa Claus, Georgia, Murders" is NOT one of those poorly written books. The author takes great care in researching the lives of all involved in this heinous crime. For those true crime readers who want a great read and have a full free day or night to spare, BUY THIS BOOK!

Nothing miniature about this mystery
By L. Gondelman
It's Halloween and Geraldine Porter and her granddaughter Maddie are busy working on miniature witches and ghosts for their haunted dollhouse. When they aren't working on their masterpiece, they are taking in the sights of the decorated streets of Lincoln Point wondering who will win the contest for best house. They come up to the home of Sam & Lillian Ferguson where a lifelike scarecrow is resting on the steps.

When anyone gets too close, the scarecrow is supposed to scare them with sounds and movement. However, when a few teenage kids got close this scarecrow didn't make any noisesor move, as it wasn't a scarecrow but the body of Oliver Halbert. Oliver wasn't liked much by some of the more influencial people of Lincoln Point as he was working on digging up information to prove that bribes were made and shortcuts taken by city members and builders.

Geraldine vows she will not get involved in another murder investigation, but Maddie has no intention of not doing any investigating on the Case. It may all be moot as at first it appeared that Oliver committed suicide. Of course it's never that simple. No only is Oliver the brother of her miniature crafting buddy Susan, but Gerry's nephew Skip (one of Lincoln Points detectives) comes to her with news that her late husbands name is found on the list of "possibles" that Oliver was working on. Anyone that knew Ken Porter knew he would NEVER do something illegal, and Gerry will do everything she can to prove just that. But what happens when she finds some unsettling things among Ken's things. Is Ken the man she thought he was? And what secret was he hiding?

Geraldine has many suspects in her hunt for the truth, including Peter Lynch, a major contractor in Lincoln Point and the Ferguson family (who owned an airplane parts repair business and also a focus of his investigation) whose front stairs Oliver was found on. With the help of Maddie, girl detective wanna be and Henry, boyfriend wanna be, Geraldine is bound to get to the bottom of this gruesome Case. As Geraldine works to preserve her husbands good name, she painstakingly follows the clues that are left out, like candy on Halloween night.

One of the things I love the most about the miniature series is the relationship between Gerry and her granddaughter as it reminds me so much of my own relationship with my grandmother. While I am not a miniaturist, I find it fascinating to read about how they make such things as hard hats, a sawhorse, witches and ghosts. Ms. Grace does a wonderful job of leaving clues hidden along the way. She creates just enough spookiness to make any Halloween lover go BOO. Monster in Miniature is a charming cozy that will have you feeling like you're back visiting with friends you haven't seen in a while and anxiously awaiting the next time you get together.

A not-so-quiet Halloween
By Robert A. Olson
Margaret Grace's "Miniature" series has come of age with its fifth cozy. Halloween provides the perfect environment for Lincoln Point, Californis'a latest "whodunit."
Fortunately, Grace has let miniaturist Geraldine Porter and her grand-daughter develop into complete characters whom the series' readers have grown to know well over the preceeding books. She seems more comfortable with them and lets them proceed naturally in this holiday setting to the uncovering the murderer and the reasons behind the killing. Along the way, the reader learns more about Geraldine's town and friends and the seemingly ever-expanding cast of neighborhood characters. A very enjoyable read.

FUN FIFTH IN THE SERIES
By ITZME
This is the 5th in the Miniature Mystery series. Geraldine Porter and her granddaughter Maddie come across a corpse (Oliver) in a Halloween display. They set out to find the killer. Along the way, several personal problems occur for Gerry (was her deceased husband "crooked" in his architectual dealings and did he have another child before their son Richard). They are assisting Skip (a local policeman and Gerry's nephew) with the murder investigation. This assistance gets them into some pretty tight and dangerous situations.

Sea Change (Jesse Stone Novels), by Robert B. Parker

Paradise, Massachusetts, police chief Jesse Stone faces the case of his career in the newest novel in the bestselling series.

When a woman's partially decomposed body washes ashore in Paradise, Massachusetts, police chief Jesse Stone is forced into a case far more difficult than it initially appears. Identifying the woman is just the first step in what proves to be an emotionally charged investigation. Florence Horvath was an attractive, recently divorced heiress from Florida; she also had a penchant for steamy sex and was an enthusiastic participant in a video depicting the same. Somehow the combination of her past and present got her killed, but no one is talking-not the crew of the Lady Jane, the Fort Lauderdale yacht moored in Paradise Harbor; not her very blond, very tan twin sisters, Corliss and Claudia; and not her curiously affectless parents, living out a sterile retirement in a Miami high rise. But someone-Jesse-has to speak for the dead, even if it puts him in harm's way.

From Publishers Weekly
Filled with tawdry sexual shenanigans, bestseller Parker's fifth Jesse Stone novel (after 2003's Stone Cold) finds the former L.A. cop, now the police chief of Paradise, Mass., tentatively reunited with his ex-wife, Jenn, and approaching a year since his last drink. The murder of a woman aboard a sailboat leads Stone into a world of wealth and depravity centered on a couple of yacht owners from Florida and their crowd. Drugs, pornography, rape and underage sex provide a degrading framework for the murder investigation. Stone gets a valuable assist from Kelly Cruz, a Fort Lauderdale cop, as he traces the backgrounds of victims and suspects. The laconic Stone with his uncertain relationship with Jenn, his struggle with alcohol and his visits to a therapist presents a striking contrast to Parker's primary hero, Spenser. But much of the dialogue is interchangeable: witty, flirtatious, droll and sexually charged. The outcome manages to be both surprising and depressing. Stone is a work in progress whose following is likely to increase as he continues to grow.

From Booklist
The body of an unidentified woman is found in a cove off the village of Paradise, Massachusetts, during the annual Race Week for sailing vessels. This is a particularly bad time for an unidentified body to surface, since the tiny populace is swollen with thousands of boat enthusiasts. Former LAPD cop and current Paradise police chief Jesse Stone, appearing in the Stone series' fifth entry, begins his investigation by inquiring if any boat-rental agencies have any boats missing. One rental owner comes forward, providing a driver's license of a Florida woman who never brought her boat back. After this promising lead, the case morphs from forensic identification into a disturbing morality play, as Stone digs deeper and deeper into the victim's past. This is a case that would intrigue Stone's private-eye counterpart, Spenser (who appears in a tantalizing cameo here). Parker is dead-on here when it comes to police procedure and plotting, as the seemingly simple case eddies into all kinds of ugly complications, and the story swirls from whodunit into an absorbing whydunit. On the down side, Parker's signature smart-ass dialogue is beginning to sound stale, even weak; why must all his characters talk in the same tough-guy way, heavy on the sexual innuendo? Similarly tired is the cutesy relationship between Stone and his ex-wife (punctuated by other women throwing themselves at him), which draws heavily on Spenser's relationship with Susan Silverman. Shortcomings aside, though, Parker's setting and plotting are enough to make most readers forgive the unrelenting Guy Noir style. Connie Fletcher

"What [Goddard's books] have in common is a strong narrative thrust and ingenious plotting, elements which are robustly evident in Sea Change . . . [A] picaresque tale of high adventure and low intrigue . . . The historical period is vividly conjured up and the narrative flows effortlessly . . . Engrossing storytelling of a very high order."—Observer (UK)

My first Jess Stone novel, but not my last!!
By Colby Tustin
This was my first Parker novel, my dad was reading it and when he finished it I picked it up. I am glad I did as I have a new favorite author! The hero is Jess Stone a former Los Angeles cop who is now police chief in a small Massachusetts town. The chief has some problems, a recovering alcoholic who has lost his wife Jenn. But then a badly decomposed floater washes up on the beach. The dinning crabs make identification of the body difficult, but the cops soon figure out the body is that of Florence Horvath a wealthy divorcee from Fort Lauderdale. Florence's yacht the Lady Jane is docked at the local marina. Stone is plunged into the lives of the rich jets set crowd to attempt to learn what happened to Ms. Horvath?

Stone makes for a great anti-hero. The mystery plot is balanced by Stones personal struggles, that gives the story a realistic edge. The writing is crisp and the dialog snappy yet believable. I also liked the fact that all of the action and plot devices seemed reasonable and probable, something lacking in much of this genre. Though over 300 pages it is a quick read. I now look forward to going back and reading Parker's other novels.

SEA CHANGE: FASCINATING AND ENGROSSING PAGE TURNER
By RBSProds
Five INTRIGUING Stars!! Jesse Stone, former LA cop is now chief of police in Paradise, Massachusettes. On the wagon, in analysis, and trying to get his woman back, he's carrying more baggage than a police chief should. Then a murdered "floater" plunges him, a man in therapy, into the seedy underbelly of the rich, to analyze the case and find the killer. And he gets alot of help along the way from internal and external sources, one big surprising source in particular.

The redoubtable Robert B. Parker gives us tons of detailed police procedure and forensic investigation, which is just the kickoff, then he takes Jesse down the lurid rabbit-hole to a surprising climax in a wide ranging investigation. Snappy dialogue and intriguing, disturbing characters and situations abound. In some places it was like I wanted to cover my eyes and peek through the parted fingers: we shouldn't look but can't look away. Do people really live like that? Caution: there are two disturbing scenes conjured up by Mr Parker. An amazing read by one of our most talented mystery writers. Five Big Stars!!!

(Note: Eminently readable book with short three to five page chapters that are sparely written, but chock full of information on the page and between the lines. A fascinating, engrossing approach to writing.)

One of the Lesser Parker Novels
By Thriller Lover
I'm a big fan of Robert Parker's work. I'm also a big fan of his Jesse Stone series. This is the first novel in the Stone series that disappointed me, although it's still good enough to warrant a mild recommendation.

The major problem of this book is the plot. Much of this book is devoted to a sex club run by two fifty-something men, and the vapid young women (often teenagers) who are drawn into it. We have one lurid scene after another detailing the sexual escapades of these people, which are usually caught on tape.

This sounds potentially interesting, but Parker overdoes it. After a while, the endless sex scenes (and Parker's moralizing about them) grow tiresome and depressing. It doesn't help that nearly all of the young girls in this novel are cartoonish, lolita-type characters who seem willing to sleep with anybody. If the characters were more three-dimensional, I would have cared more deeply about the outcome of the book.

SEA CHANGE is also very short (under 50,000 words) and can be read in a few hours. Like a lot of readers, I've noticed a lot of editing errors in this book. A real embarassment for Putnam -- don't their star writers deserve better?

In short, this book is decently written and has great dialogue, but it's hurt by a shaky plot. If you've never read Parker before, I would recommend an earlier Jesse Stone novel, STONE COLD, or one of the early Spenser novels, which are superb.

8th entry in Gaslight Mystery series fascinating
By Christina Lockstein
Murder in Little Italy by Victoria Thompson is the eighth entry in the Gaslight Mystery series featuring New York midwife Sarah Brandt and her occasional suitor Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. A young pregnant Irish girl marries into an Italian family, but when her baby arrives "prematurely" and roly-poly fat, the family turns on her. The next morning the girl is dead, and as Sarah and Frank try to investigate the Black Hand gets involved and no one is talking. Thompson handles the issue of discrimination and prejudice well without assigning blame to either side. She also works in some great New York history into the story without it feeling forced. The chemistry between Frank and Sarah continues to grow, and the subplots with their families are intriguing and don't interfere with the mystery. My only disappointment is that I have to wait for the next installment to come out!

Good mystery series

I do like this series set in late 1800's New York City. The main characters are well drawn and interesting, and the plots are interesting as well (although I can generally figure out "who dunnit" fairly early on.

Amazon.com Review
When Anita Blake's boss at Animators, Inc., informs her that she's expected to raise 300-year-old zombies from a field of jumbled bones just to settle a land dispute, she's understandably annoyed. But as soon as she arrives in Branson, Missouri, to do the deed, the job gets more interesting. A psychotic sword-wielding vampire starts committing multiple murders in the area, and Anita must call on Jean-Claude, her powerful fanged suitor, for help. As always, Anita prevails over the undead, keeping Jean-Claude at arm's length, clearing the cemetery land of an ancient enchantment, and nailing the vampiric killer in one fell swoop.

More Depth, More Power, & More Vampire!
By T. Hilburn
It did not take me long to read this succulent tale! Thank goodness Ms. Hamilton did not leave me drowning with questions, there were a lot that was answered with Anita and how her powers are growing way beyond comprehension, her softening heart between her wolfe and vampire lovers, and the deeper cognizance into the pasts of both Anita and Jean-Claude.
Bloody Bones starts with her being outsourced to Branson to raise notably aged dead in order to learn the rightful owner of the land to which an exorbitant construction is to take place. While in Branson, the Spook Squad loans her out to the local detectives when several teenagers have been brutally slaughtered. Anita feels that there may be some connection with the faerie owned land, the dead to be raised, and the murders. Later, she realizes her biggest challenge is not only a sword wielding creature and an arduous fey monster, but an omnipotent vampire that also realizes the potential of Anita's necromancy.
In order to get answers, Anita calls upon her sexy vampire lover, Jean-Claude. During Jean-Claude's stay to help his "ma petite" we learn about his and Anita's grief-stricken past, although very different history's, Anita discerns that they share a common ground and maybe, just maybe, Jean-Claude has a heart and soul and a passion that can be truer than any other. Letting her inhibitions go for one second, and we get to see how much she lusts or even loves her libidinous blood sucker. Yum Yum Yum!

Bloody Bones (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter) Book 5
By Cremekat
This is about the time in the series that things really start to get wierd. It is still a good story though as Anita and her apprentice take a trip. Anita learns somethings about herself and her abilities that begin to scare her. It is worth the read and leads into the next book in the series. I already own the book in paperback and wanted to buy it hardbound as I have bought the last 7 books that way. I am looking forward to getting the next book in the series- Harlequin.

If you don't mind some erotic scenes and weird otherworld stuff than this is a book (in a series) that I would recommend. It's not your everyday Buffy kind of book. It's better.

I love this series of books. Both my Daughter and I have read the whole series together. I went to the book store to find something to read and the guy in the store said "If you are looking for a good book try this one". He handed me "Guilty Pleasures" (the first book in the series) and I was back the next day for every thing else in the series that was on the shelf. I lent them to my Daughter and she was the same way. She came over and asked me for the next book.

So good I forgot I was at work while reading! *don't tell my boss!*
By Amanda Clark
I'm at a loss for words right now. I have spent the last month reading through all of this author's books and have yet to come across one that has disappointed me. I figured since I didn't know the main characters in this one from her "Whispering Bay Romance" series I originally started with, that I wouldn't like this one as much. Well, I was WRONG! I actually LOVED this one probably the most out of all of them.

Georgia and Dave had a somewhat angsty little story that I was biting my nails for the whole time. With Georgia fleeing to town when her boyfriend blows what she thought would be a proposal after five years together, she meets Dave by chance and the two have an explosive chemistry she's yet to experience in her years with almost fiance (and boss) Spencer. After a drunken night of Bunco with the local Bunco Babes, whom I've grown to absolutely ADORE, Georgia does something out of character that brings Spencer hauling a-- into town to save face. Little does he know someone else has caught Georgia's eye...and panties!

I know a lot of readers are anti cheating of ANY kind and I totally understand that, but for ME specifically I have parameters. I'm usually the morality police on this issue and will drop a book with the quickness if I feel the characters have gone too far but the extenuating circumstances in this book proved to be exactly within my tolerance threshold. Did Georgia cheat? Yes and No. There were a lot of moving parts here. She was a fantastic character whom I loved from the start so I understood her predicament. When your boyfriend of 5 years gives you a calculator on your fifth anniversary when you were expecting a ring, it tends to wound you a little bit and makes you do some soul searching. Even though Georgia drunk dials him and quits her job which sort of walks the line of breaking up (in her mind) you could technically say she didn't break things off with Spencer the right way before Dave's sexy Cuban/Irish, green eyed behind shows up and gives Spencer a run for his money.

God I loved Dave! He is what made this so much easier to tolerate because when there is a couple I desperately WANT to be together, I overlook semantics of if they are currently seeing someone. I know it's twisted of me but I just can't help it. Georgia and Dave BELONGED together. You could tell from the first instance they met. She was somewhat uptight and Dave was charming and honest...almost TOO honest but it was what Georgia needed. A kick in the pants if you will, to sh** or get off the pot. 5 years with someone who isn't ready to commit to you and puts everything in their lives BEFORE your happiness isn't someone you need in your life. And let's be honest...a calculator? Really? Spencer shot himself in the foot with that one. I'm not just making excuses for the characters, I just never felt that her and Spencer were all that serious to begin with. There was no connection between them for me to feel any sort of betrayal about the situation. Dave helped her open up and lighten up. He helped her find joy and happiness with herself and her life. And Georgia helped Dave stop holding a grudge and take a risk with his business. He offered her friendship and a shoulder to lean on. Something Spencer had five years to try and accomplish but ultimately failed to provide. I loved these two so much that when Spencer came back into the picture once he (FINALLY) realized what he was missing when Georgia left, I worried she would go back with Spencer or end up sleeping with him again and THEN realize she should be with Dave. I know I'm weird about it but if she had slept with Spencer AFTER she had been with Dave I would have put the book down and walked away. (Don't question it, just let it flow through you) There was just something SO incredibly special about Dave and Georgia for me and I couldn't help but feel like they needed to be together, no matter what stood in their way.

"Bunco Babes Gone Wild" felt a little bit more dramatic and serious than all the other stories have, to me. With the relationship drama unfolding between Dave, Georgia and Spencer and the "Who will she choose" bit hanging heavy over much of the story I wasn't prepared to be so jittery wondering how this would turn out. I mean, I had a clue because I've come to know this author and she writes some amazing HEA endings but for a second there she really had me scared. Although this one was a bit more serious, there was still the built in hilarity of this fabulous group of women called "The Bunco Babes" who get themselves into crazy situations and a little side story/mystery whodunit that added even more humor to the plot. Every character, whether the main characters, secondary characters or the secondary, secondary characters (thirdcondary? I feel like Pilar, making up my own words! HA!) all feel like people you'd know in real life. Every small town has them. The grumpy old man who comes to the coffee shop everyday to b**ch about certain things, or the town "do-gooder" who always has to rub their "perfect" life in everyone's face. This eclectic group of people are such great reading fodder, even the most hated character is written in such a way that you end up liking her sometimes. Maria Geraci amazes me again and again with her fabulous writing. She makes me want to move back to Florida and join a bunco group just because these stories are such a delight I never want them to end! I still have a few more of her books to go before I've maxed out all her written work and I know I'll have a hard time reading anything else when I'm finally done. Thankfully I can re-read them all again because these books have managed to completely steal my heart!.

If you are looking for an author who writes amazing character built stories with sweet and sizzlingly sexy romance with perfectly timed humor added in, then Maria Geraci has cornered the market. She knows what women want to read and she delivers the goods in every single book.

lighthearted romp
By A Customer
A disappointed Georgia Meyer cannot believe her boyfriend Spencer Moody gave her a calculator for their fifth anniversary. Although he is also her boss, she expected an engagement ring but not something for the office.

Needing time to reconsider their going nowhere relationship, Georgia visits her sister Frida in Whispering Bay, Florida. Frida and her buddies the Bunco Babes welcome Georgia to join them on a Bunco night. They plow her with drinks and soon vino veritas takes place as she tells all to them including her attraction to Dave Hernandez, whom she just met. Sober Georgia must recalculate what she wants out of life.

This is a lighthearted romp that fans will enjoy as Georgia invades Florida only to realize she has to make up her mind who she wants. The Bunco Babes are a solid support crew especially with dice and margaritas while Dave is a well drawn protagonist. Still this warm frolic is owned heart and soul by Georgia as she must roll the dice between being a football widow if he ever asks, a love goddess if he ever asks, and if neither asks a Bunco Babe gone wild.

Another perfect roll from Maria Geraci
By Ellz Readz
My thoughts...Maria once again provides a fun, light-hearted romantic comedy for adult readers. Bunco Babes Gone Wild was every bit as sexy as the first installment, Bunco Babes Tell All. We meet a new character, Georgia, who finds herself in an uncomfortable situation with strangers. Little does she know, it won't be her last. We also meet a sexy, Prince Charming named Dave, but it he her Prince Charming? The original girls are still around mixing margaritas and dishing out gossip. Who knew a dice game could be so sexy?

There was only one thing about this installment that turned me off. It took me a while to warm up to the heroine Georgia. She starts out really snobby and materialistic. After a while, her character started to open up a bit and you could see that she really does have a big heart and good intentions. It was just part of her character, but the superficialness was a turn-off. Maybe it was just her way of protecting herself from others. Overall, this was another great read. I would recommend it to fans of a good light-hearted story (with a touch of sex).
