Sheldon Rusch proves he is no one hit wonder
By A Customer
A man is found strangled in his home at the same time a woman is found murdered and posed in an outdoor arena. The pattern happens several times. Illinois State Special Agent Elizabeth Taylor Hewitt is assigned the head up the case. Her new captain is not the father figure like her previous one;, in fact he is more like the evil stepfather who never lets Hewitt forget she slept with a serial killer. Elizabeth has a theory that two different people working in tandem are responsible for the series of murders.

Hewitt's first break comes when she notices that in the house of the male victims, the radio was tuned to the classical station WCLS. On the night of the last murder at 3:03 A.M. Nocturne in E. Flat by Chopin was playing. She thinks the killer got into the apartment and played the song working the victim over just as he did with the other male victims. When she goes over to the radio station, she is shocked to learn that the owner is her old high school friend Jimmy Benson. He tells her that the only disgruntled employee he knows is a radio personality he fired. When Hewitt meets that person her instincts tell her he isn't the killer and she moves the investigation into a different direction one that almost costs her and her lover their lives.

Sheldon Rusch proves he is no one hit wonder with THE BOY WITH THE PERFECT HANDS, a mystery that has luscious rich, literary prose, a likeable "everyman" heroine and a group of suspects that could all be the killers. The investigation progresses naturally from one moment to the next and makes the climax feel very right. The protagonist uses tried and true police methods as well as intuition to crack the case wide open.

A scintillating thriller
By M Johnsen
I could not put down Sheldon Rusch's THE BOY WITH PERFECT HANDS. This page-turner entertained me with a poetic voice set against crumbling characters and events. I was attracted to the suspenseful piecing together of clues and pushed through the grisly scenes. Hewitt remains a volatile mix of emotion and cerebral control, and I am glad for the messiness. Hewitt's friendships and continuing relationships round out her character and create a richly textured emotional landscape. With Hewitt, the reader can take a moment out of a life and question man's humanity to man as well as within himself. It surfaced with a subtleness and imbued this work with a rich patina of things to come. Why read a horror book? Rusch tugs at how love of oneself and others determines a darkness within or a hope for humanity. Where will Hewitt go from here? I cannot wait to see.

But one fateful night leads Elizabeth to question her prejudices. Through the eyes of Richard?s ailing queen she sees a man worthy of respect and undying adoration. From Publishers Weekly
Worth vividly brings one of England's lesser-known queens to life in this luminous portrait of "Elizabeth the Good," wife of Henry VII and mother of the notorious Henry VIII. The daughter of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville Grey (who dabbled in witchcraft), Elizabeth of York first falls in love with her uncle-a man she originally despised-who later becomes King Richard III after Edward's death. Although she does not marry Richard, Elizabeth becomes queen when she accepts Henry Tudor's proposal and becomes the first Tudor Queen. Woven into Elizabeth's story are the shrewish machinations of her mother and Margaret Beaufort, Henry's mother, as well as the mysterious fates of her brothers, Edward V and Richard of York, the princes who disappeared in the Tower of London. Worth (Lady of the Roses) examines Elizabeth's life with a journalist's eye, an impressive feat given that her subject left little behind for study. This attention to detail will appeal to fans of historical fiction.

Well written
By Jennifer Rothwell
Sandra Worth is a very talented writer. Her character development in this novel was very good, just as good as that in her novel 'The Lady of the Roses'.
She presented an interesting picture of Elizabeth of York, and I believe she gave a very insightful perspective of her character. Little is known about her, but much is known about the policies of her husband Henry VII.
It is well-known that Elizabeth took a backseat in government, and Sandra Worth gives interesting reasons as to why this was the case. The most telling of all reasons being her mother-in-law, Margaret Beaufort.
I also found the childhood character of Henry VIII a fascinating figure, if not a little over-exaggereted to fit his adult persona that we know so well.
The 'downfall' of this novel is purely that too much was said of Richard III. Even years after his death, Elizabeth is still constantly refering to him. I realize that the author wishes to paint a positve portrait of Richard III, but this novel was supposed to be about Elizabeth. I would have liked for the references to Richard to be a little fewer.
Nonetheless, this is a very well-written book.

Really Enjoyed This...
By Mercedes J.
Well, there's not much else I can add to the (mostly) glowing reviews of this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was my first real look at the reigns of Richard III and Henry VII. I've read MANY books about Henry VIII and his wives, and court, but it was nice to finally get the story of where he came from. While I don't fully agree with all the authors portrayals, she did do a great job of telling Elizabeth's story in what I imagine would be very close to her own voice.

I won't summarize this since it's already been done so many times here, but Elizabeth is a very realistic and sympathetic woman who blossoms into a gentle and loving Queen...the polar opposite of her Mother, Queen Elizabeth Woodville. She manages to balance out her always suspicious and ruthless husband, King Henry VII. I'm not sure I buy Elizabeth's pinning for Richard III her entire adult life, but this is a fiction book, so Ms. Worth is able to stretch some ideas a bit. Also, I personally am a believer of the little princes being killed in the tower, but she almost makes you believe that Perkin Warbeck is in fact Prince Richard.

Overall, I definitely recommend this. I like the first person format, even if it can be a bit stifling at times. The story moves quickly and is one that I believe most Tudor-ear fans will relish.

4.5 Stars: Capitivity and Power Plays, Kingship and motherhood
By D. Merrimon Crawford
Elizabeth of York, loyal daughter to King Edward IV, worships her father and believes in him as king. While her mother plots and schemes, her father reaches her with his ideas and warmth. When he dies, Elizabeth encounters Richard, Duke of Gloucester, the man appointed as regent for Edward's son. Despite the wicked rumors about Richard and the multiple misfortunes her family experiences throughout his rise to power, Elizabeth knows her father entrusted the kingdom into his hands. Was he wrong? One night, Richard's wife Anne speaks to her from the heart and Elizabeth comes to know better the man, as king as and father, and indeed herself. As political pressures come to bear, making her a pawn in a power play for the kingship, his presence in her heart helps her to endure the horrors ahead and devote her life to serving England as wife to Henry Tudor (Henry VII).

In the absence of letters or personal documents from Elizabeth of York herself, Sandra Worth's first person narrative creates an insightful portrait of her as a woman and mother during turbulent times as the Middle Ages come to a close and a new era is born when Elizabeth becomes the first Tudor queen. Sandra Worth makes the connections between all the royal figures throughout these shifts of power so that readers feel the intrigue and danger among the uneasy alliances. THE KING'S DAUGHTER gives a chilling insight into the heart of the monarchy where family alliances provide solace but also create a threat to one's very existence as grabs for position within the family destroy. A brother is not just a brother but also a man who stands in the way of access to power. Within this context, the contrast between Elizabeth and her mother, and later Elizabeth of York and Lady Margaret Beaufort (mother to Henry VII) highlight the precarious position of women in this world as well. Sandra Worth provides an intriguing look not only into the limited role of women during this era but also a look into which they wield power of their own with determination in the choices royal women make, albeit in ways perhaps less obvious to the casual observer.

THE KING'S DAUGHTER brings several key characters to life so that historical figures sometimes presented as isolated characters in history books are now seen in their relationships to one another, thus giving this period a new vibrancy and depth. THE KING'S DAUGHTER focuses on Elizabeth as a woman in her roles as daughter, lover, wife and mother. Sandra Worth views this period through family dynamics first and foremost, juxtaposing the sometimes brutal machinations of power of those surrounding Elizabeth to her longings and devotion to family. Living her life in one sort of captivity or another most of her life, some more obvious, such as her time of escape to to sanctuary, than others, such as her being under the almost absolute control of her mother-in-law, Elizabeth of York was a quiet woman with a rich inner life. Elizabeth thought, read and internalized omens and the great works of medieval literature from Boethius, the Tristan tale to Sir Thomas Malory's Arthurian tales. Although the dating of Boethius is off a couple of centuries (an editing typo hopefully but an important correction not to miss), Sandra Worth does an exceptional job not only in her selection of relevant medieval works, but also in her use of them in Elizabeth's thoughts to give a depth to her character and to the period itself. As the new world emerges, slight hints of that change enter in references to Erasmus and a chilling reference to Machiavelli's THE PRINCE. Through literature, the reader comes to know Elizabeth's values and her intimate thoughts on love and kingship. Though sometimes Elizabeth appears frustratingly submissive, Sandra Worth's contrast to the careful and covetous plotting of others shows growing determination within her to make a difference, a determination that in the end makes her true to the name "Elizabeth the Good" often bestowed upon her. As the novel progresses, Elizabeth of York moves from being a woman mostly ruled by others to a woman looking outward, not only as a mother trying to look out for her children, but also a woman determined to serve her people. Sandra Worth leaves readers with a haunting, disturbing image of the future Henry VIII. THE KING'S DAUGHTER will appeal to a wide variety of historical fiction readers, not only for the presentation of a world in the process of change but also Sandra Worth's ability to capture the the inner lives of her characters.

funny at times
By Robert
Very insightful, funny at times, been a fan of Jose Canseco during his days with the A's, he's been truthful with his use of PEDs and acknowledgement of others. It's a shame the baseball media ostracize him for telling like it is. Would recommend this book.

Not Much New Here...
By Mark Stone
I agree with Watty's review. Way too much rehashing of the best from JUICED. Tedious court testimonies and questions from lie detector tests.

The only real interesting new stuff is about the refusal of the networks and media to accuse Roger Clemens of juicing up. Also of interest--Magglio Ordonez' almost certain steroid usage, and A-Rod's interest in 'roids and Canseco's ex-wife. Check this one out at the library.

The Coda On The "Steroid Era"
By Best Of All
Jose Canseco ushered in the "Steroid Era" in professional baseball through his actions in numerous clubhouses, brought it to a crashing halt with his first book, Juiced, and has now buried the sordid past with Vindicated.

Canseco again swings for the fences with additional autobiographical material, an exploration into the Mitchell Report, along with critical pronouncements on various aspects of the media, Major League Baseball and additional players not named in the first book, with an explanation on why the omissions took place.

The most explosive material is initially introduced through a series of lie detector tests Canseco took to prove the validity of his statements.

It will continue to be hotly debated on why Canseco came clean on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in MLB. But it cannot be minimized the impact he has had on forcing MLB - from the commissioner's office to the player's association - to confront the issue in public forums.

A whistle-blower who continues to be vilified in some quarters, Canseco takes the heat like a clean-up hitter and then smacks one out of the ballpark.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of action-hero Kurt Austin of the National Underwater and Maritime Agency expect imaginative plotting, but it never comes down the chute in this seventh NUMA Files novel from bestseller Cussler and Shamus-winner Kemprecos (after Polar Shift). Austin and his team are hunting icebergs when they chance upon a pirate raid aimed at stealing a priceless Phoenician antiquity launched by a stereotypical megalomaniacal villain, Viktor Baltazar, who believes he's a descendant of King Solomon. Baltazar and Austin joust continually (once, literally!) over the antique, which may be connected to the lost ark of the covenant, Thomas Jefferson and the suspicious death of Meriwether Lewis. Sequences including the attempted human sacrifice of the requisite gorgeous female U.N. investigator are all too predictable, and the writing ("The Filipino's lips curved like slices of liverwurst in a frying pan") is often less than Cussler's best. From Booklist
Calculations seem to point to this being popular adventure novelist Cussler's thirty-fourth book, the seventh one written in collaboration with Kemprecos and the seventh one to chronicle the adventures of the NUMA Special Assignments Team. In his latest romp, Cussler is concerned with an ancient Phoenician statue called the Navigator, which was stolen from a Baghdad museum in 900 BCE. The compelling, well-organized plot--taken from a template that works--includes such disparate but ultimately workable elements as a foiled hijacking, a secret scientific project, pirates, a beautiful woman ("Her gown's scooped neckline displayed a decolletage that hovered between proper and sexy"), and the heroic machinations of the NUMA sleuths. Without exactly revealing the ending, suffice it to say--or, actually, suffice it to pose the question, Has the NUMA team ever failed in its quest for justice? Read it to make certain you've answered the question correctly. Cussler's multitude of fans will undoubtedly eat up this new novel just as they have previous ones. George Cohen

A nice escape into an action-adventure tale as only Cussler can tell it...
By Thomas Duff
Seems like a number of my library "recreational reads" came in at once, so I've had some down time from my normal fare of reading material. I finally made it to the top of the hold list for The Navigator by Clive Cussler with Paul Kemprecos. If you're in the mood for a fast-moving action adventure novel, it works pretty well...

The main story revolves around a statue called The Navigator. It was stolen from the Iraqi national museum but was recovered with the aid of a UN official named Carina Mechadi. While on a ship bound for the US with the other recovered items, the statue is once again the center of attention when an armed group invades the ship, attempts to transport the statue off by helicopter, and sets the ship to collide with an oil drilling platform to hide the evidence. But Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala of NUMA are able to pull off a dramatic rescue, saving the ship, the statue, *and* Ms. Mechadi. The mystery of why someone would want the statue deepens as a tie is discovered between the statue, Thomas Jefferson, and the ancient Phoenicians. When the statue is once again stolen and Carina once again kidnapped, Austin's full attention is focused on saving the damsel in distress one more time, as well as putting an end to the person behind it all.

Compared to Cussler's Dirk Pitt series, the Austin novel is much more sedate and comfortable. There's definitely enough action to keep you turning pages, but every chapter doesn't end with someone about to die and/or pull off a miraculous MacGyver-esque escape. The idea of Phoenicians being the first to visit North America isn't new in a Cussler novel (Serpent in 1999), but he does a nice job in putting together a Da Vinci-type mystery where people are willing to die to keep a secret.

If you're ready to kill off a few hours with a mental escape from reality, The Navigator should fit your needs well...

Thwarting the latest wealthy megalomaniac
By Cory D. Slipman
Clive Cussler and Paul Kemprecos follow a previously successful formula twisting around history to create a fast based action adventure tale surrounding the actions of members of the fictitious National Underwater and Maritme Agency(NUMA).

Special Projects director Kurt Austin and his sidekick Joe Zavala find themselves in the midst of a mid oceanic hijacking. The booty is a bronze Phoenician statue known as The Navigator being transported under the guardianship of the alluring Carina Mechadi working for UNESCO. The statue was looted along with other antiquities from the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad during the U.S. invasion. Mechadi's mission was to recovered the purloined artifacts.

The Navigator happened to be the object of desire of industrialist Viktor Baltazar head of a large private mercenary cartel and mining empire. Baltazar who traced his roots back to the days of King Solomon believed that the statue gave clues to details of a pre-Columbian visit to the New World by the Phoenicians.

Tied in with these historical events were a recently and accidently discovered encrypted letter penned by Thomas Jefferson under the guise of the secretive Artichoke society. Analysis of the Jefferson papers detailed a letter from Meriweather Lewis of the famous Lewis & Clark expedition. The correspondence hinted at the existence of a Phoenician landing in the New World with a mission to hide a precious and sensitive item whose existence could change the fabric of society as postulated by King Solomon.

Baltazar desired the information that The Navigator contained to advance his own nefarious plans. Meanwhile Austin, Zavala and their minions along his Austin love interest Mechadi team up to deter Baltazar in a rollicking adventure that strains the boundaries of credulity. The plot was standard fare for Cussler and his ghost writers but the ending was a bit of a cop out. For stress free reading requiring very little mentation, "The Navigator" is right up your alley.

Austin's Action Just Keeps Getting Better
By Kara J. Jorges
When American forces invaded Iraq the first time, the Baghdad Museum was looted of valuable treasures. UNESCO agent Carina Mechadi is on their trail, and jumps at the chance when wealthy businessman Viktor Baltazar offers to privately finance her search, asking only that she keep him informed of her progress. Carina crosses paths with our hero, Kurt Austin, quite literally when she recovers the most valuable of the museum's missing items and accompanies them on their containership voyage across the Atlantic to the Smithsonian. Kurt Austin and sidekick Joe Zavala had been in the same area of the North Atlantic known as Iceberg Alley, helping to rope in icebergs heading for oil rigs and tow them from harm's way, when Carina's ship, the Ocean Adventure, appears to be steaming directly for an oil rig. When Austin's derring-do puts him aboard, he finds the Ocean Adventure had been boarded by pirates in helicopters. Their one objective seemed to have been recovery of a statue of dubious value in Carina's collection called the Navigator. Austin stops the theft and rescues the ship, seeing Carina safely to Washington. Once there, the mystery deepens when Anthony Saxon, an ill-respected archaeologist and writer, joins forces with Austin and the gang. Someone wants the Navigator badly, for the statue contains an ancient Phoenician map supposedly leading to King Solomon's Mines and a controversial set of the Ten Commandments carved in gold. They aren't the only ones looking for the lost artifacts, and the other guys will stop at nothing to get there first.

I have only one complaint about this book, and that is its inability to resist the urge to oh-so-trendily cast doubt on stories of Biblical origin. The outrage has died down, and so has our interest in this type of subject matter, which is handled with little skill and no attempt at originality. That disappointing detail aside, this is a fast-paced, white-knuckle thrill ride as Kurt Austin and his friends unravel a centuries-old mystery, trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys, who naturally have sinister motives. Though the engaging Paul and Gamay Trout once again played disappointingly small roles and, sadly, maritime historian St. Julien Perlmutter sat this one out, it was nonetheless quite the page turner I found very difficult to put down.

With its seventh book, this series has obviously found its stride. With its Cussleresque abundance of corny similes and nonstop action woven into an intricate plot, combined with Kemprecos' warm, down-to-earth prose, it's hard to find action better than this smoothly-paced novel. Once again, you can't go wrong with a book with Cussler on the cover.

The inventor of the medical thriller shows the profession’s dark side: the terrifying story of a doctor who is sucked into the maelstrom of the current medical malpractice crisis.

When Boston-based Dr. Craig Bowman is served with a summons for medical negligence, he’s shocked, enraged, and more than a little humiliated. A devoted physician who has endured grueling years of training and worked continuously in the service of others, he is now a partner in an exclusive concierge medical practice. No longer forced to see more and more patients while spending less and less time with each one just to keep his office door open, he provides the kind of medical care he has been prepared to do, lavishing twenty-four-hour availability and personalized attention on his handpicked patients. And at last he is earning a significant income, no longer facing decreased reimbursements from insurance companies. But this idyllic situation comes to a grinding halt one sunny afternoon—and things get much, much worse.

Enter Dr. Jack Stapleton, a medical examiner in New York City and Bowman’s brother-in-law: Jack’s sister Alexis—now Bowman’s estranged wife—begs for his help as her husband’s trial drags on. Jack agrees to travel to Boston to offer his forensic services and expert-witness experience to Craig’s beleaguered defense attorney. But when Jack’s irreverent suggestion to exhume the corpse and thereby disprove the alleged malpractice is taken seriously, he opens a Pandora’s box of trouble. As Craig’s life and career are put on the line, Jack is on the verge of making a most unwelcome discovery, of tremendous legal and medical significance—and there are people who will do anything to keep him from learning the truth.

From Publishers Weekly
Guidall's experienced reading brings a pleasant touch of class to Cook's latest thriller. A distinguished and self-confident physician, Craig Bowman is delivered an ego-shattering blow when he is sued for malpractice by the husband of one of his patients, hypochondriac Patience Stanhope, who died while under his care. The trial takes up the bulk of this wordy novel. Bowman's wife asks her brother, medical examiner Dr. Jack Stapleton, to use his expertise to help with her husband's defense. Stapleton agrees, but what should be a routine forensic exercise quickly turns into a dangerous trail of lies, deception and murder. While it takes some time to get to the story's climax, Cook eventually ties up all the loose ends, although the denouement feels more gimmicky than surprising. Guidall exhibits admirable vocal talents as he manages to keep this overwritten novel moving at a satisfying pace, and the ease with which he works his way through the mounds of legal and medical jargon throughout the book is a testament to his skill as a narrator. Fans of Cook's writing should enjoy this dignified presentation.

From Booklist
Medical-thriller writer Cook's latest page-turner is played out more in the courtroom than in the hospital. Dr. Craig Bowman is irritated when problem-patient Patience Stanhope calls him on what he assumes is yet another false alarm. But Craig makes a house call and discovers Patience near death. He rushes her to the hospital but not in time to save her, and the result is a malpractice suit that could cost Craig his livelihood. Alexis, the wife Craig recently reunited with, calls her brother, New York City medical examiner Jack Stapleton (last seen in Marker, 2005), and asks him to come to Boston for advice. Jack, who is less than a week away from his wedding to fellow ME Laurie Montgomery, agrees, despite the fact that he's never liked Craig. But when he travels to Boston and starts to attend Craig's trial, Jack worries that the case is being railroaded by the plaintiff's sleazy lawyer. When Jack performs the autopsy, the results are shocking. Kristine Huntley

I give MYSELF 5 stars for endurance
By Amazon Customer
Everything Janet Boyer stated PLUS:

I was a captive audience. I was in a car for over a week listening to this book. Had I not listened to this book and read it instead, I probably would have given up on it; it's god-awful. Extremely boring. Very talky. Cook will describe something, and then follow it up with a blow-by-blow discussion between characters. He apparently doesn't believe in summarizing conversations or incidents. He provides far too much detail where it doesn't matter.

Robin, we don't care that the clerk in the store's name was Jack also.

If you have any appreciation at all for dialogue, do yourself a favor and do NOT purchase the audio version of this book. As others stated, the dialogue is totally unrealistic: overly verbose and chock full of big words that even the most educated would not use in ordinary conversation. It's difficult to distinguish the narration from the dialogue, the dialogue is so stilted. Some parts were almost laughable; mostly they were downright irritating. Who talks like that????

The reader is god-awful, I don't care what his credentials are as far as reading books-on-tape/CDs. He mispronounces words (con-summit for consummate) He can't do anyone's accents. He has three modes: the higher-pitched female voice (regardless of the fact that at least one of them is described as having a common accent...he is apparently unable to mimic a Bostonian/New Yawk accent); the Bostonian upper-class type, which means he/she gets a stuffy pseudo British accent; or just the ordinary Jack Stapleton (I'm a doctor who relates so much to a cop and a basketball bud from the 'hood that they are my best friends) accent.

Robin, please. I'm sick of hearing about Jack's recklessness because of his emotional baggage, and the thousands of other ways you describe Jack's guilt for a long-dead family. Enough, please. What's it been? Fifteen years? Retire Jack. For all the references to Jack's humor, he's really not humorous. A quip does not equal humor. His "jokes" would not elicit a smile from me, merely a nod of acknowledgement.

Cook apparently couldn't decide when to end the book. He gives us the blow-by-blow of Jack's effort to get to the Church. At this point, we don't care. The story's over. Then, he does this absurd Cuba sidetrip in which I found myself thinking, "Oh no, don't tell me," and that which I dreaded actually happened.

I'm sure I've listened to worst books on CD. For the life of me, I just can't remember them.

All Tressed Up
By Hippolytos
SUMMARY: Divorced beautician Grace Terhune has moved back to her hometown of St. Elizabeth, Georgia, working in the beauty shop her mother, Violetta, runs out of her home. While getting over her failed marriage and readjusting to small town life, grand society dame Constance DuBois blows into the shop, is dissatisfied with her treatment, and leaves in a huff, issuing dire threats of vengeance. When she later turns up dead, Violetta is number one on the suspect list, and Grace is not about to let her mother be railroaded.

WHY YOU'LL LIKE THIS: Grace is a funny, smart, and capable heroine. She doesn't let people walk all over her, instead preferring to smile sweetly as she delivers her barbs and looks of outrage. Most interesting (and appreciated) about her is that she's not dumb. She doesn't stumble over clues, but actually goes looking for them, utilizing the brain she knows she has. There are elements of romance in this story, but they're mostly undercurrents and don't in anyway overpower the story or take away from the fact that this is a mystery novel. The Southern setting is charming, the secondary characters are fabulously well-drawn, and the text is snappy and engaging. Well-written, well-paced, and with superior characterization, this novel is a winner.

WHY YOU WON'T: If you're paying close enough attention, you'll figure out who the killer is relatively early on. If this is the case, just sit back and enjoy the ride as Grace puts the pieces together. There are other minor mysteries to be solved, and a slew of capable red herrings to distract you. Even if you discover the killer's identity prior to the denouement, it's worth continuing the book to see how everything is resolved.

BOTTOM LINE: One of the best releases in the cozy genre in quite some time. If you're familiar with the genre, this novel is a breath of fresh air - Grace is gutsy and determined, intelligent without being irritating, and is no milquetoast. She's definitely someone with whom I'd like to grab a drink and gossip. You just can't help but root for her and admire her tenacity. And for those who don't believe the cozy genre is for them, give this book a try and be pleasantly surprised. This is a welcome addition to the genre, and definitely a series to watch.

a great debut

This was a good read that combined what I like in my mysteries: friendship, humor, a budding romance and twists and turns that I didn't see coming.

Great New Series!
By Patricia Bird
It's hard to believe that this is a first novel. The characters are interesting and people that you want to know better. One is invested in what happens to them.

The plot also was clever. This wasn't a book that you can tell who the killer is the first time you meet him/her, but there are also enough clues along the way so that you have half a chance of figuring it out.

I can't wait for Lila Dare's next novel and have already pre-ordered it.

From Publishers Weekly
In bestseller Harris's solid fourth Harper Connelly mystery (after 2007's An Ice Cold Grave), Harper, who can not only locate bodies but also deduce the cause of death, and her stepbrother, Tolliver Lang, are summoned to Texas by members of the wealthy Joyce family, who are looking for answers behind the death of their patriarch, Rich. But when an act of violence threatens the pair, Harper realizes that the circumstances behind Rich's death may have ties to her own troubled childhood in nearby Texarkana. Further complicating matters, Tolliver and his drug addict father, who's recently been paroled, have an uneasy reunion that stirs up long-buried memories about the unsolved disappearance eight years earlier of Harper's older sister, Cameron. Harper and Tolliver's relationship, which blossomed into romance in Ice Cold, is the beating heart of the story and helps smooth over the somewhat rushed and questionably coincidental plot. (Nov.)

Babies and bullets
By E. A Solinas
If this book isn't the end of the Harper Connelly series, it certainly feels like it.

"Grave Secret" is a pretty solid conclusion to Charlaine Harris' short but sweet series about a woman able to sense the dearly departed. Mysteries are solved, plot threads are wrapped up, relatives are dealt with, and dirty little secrets are unveiled -- and while one pivotal secret is rather far-fetched, it handles all the loose threads deftly while keeping the door open for more possible stories about Harper and Tolliver.

After doing a job for the wealthy Joyce family, Harper and Tolliver face their toughest challenge yet: telling super-rigid Aunt Iona, Uncle Hank and their younger half-sisters that they're a couple. It doesn't help that this town is also where they lived as the abused blended family of neglectful junkies, and where Harper's beloved sister Cameron mysteriously vanished. As if their family relations weren't strained enough, Tolliver's creepy dad Matthew appears in town, claiming he wants to mend fences.

At the same time, Harper has been hired by the Joyces to find a missing baby that may be their grandfather's secret love child -- but someone is determined to keep her from finding it. People around her are getting injured, kidnapped and murdered -- even Tolliver has been shot. And as Harper tries to unravel the mysteries from years ago, she realizes that the Joyce family has a long-ago link to her own...

It's fairly obvious in "Grave Secret" that Charlaine Harris is ending the Harper Connelly series, although she leaves the door open for future adventures (if and when she ever wants to continue). She wraps up overhanging mysteries (Cameron's murder), deals with the rifts within the Lang/Connelly family, and puts the finishing polish on Harper and Tolliver's romantic subplot. It's a satisfying finale, if a somewhat bittersweet one.

And as in the previous books, Harris' down-to-earth prose remains warm and slightly humorous, but there's a darker, gruesome edge -- long-ago deaths, gory killings (some of them Harper's friends), and the overhanging, spooky presence of the dead. The biggest flaw is that a few of the plot twists is a bit on the far-fetched side (seriously, NOBODY noticed that except one lone person?), but otherwise it's a clever tangle of interconnected clues and lies.

Harper and Tolliver are already lovers, but Harris goes out of her way to smooth out whatever wrinkles are still left between them -- including the grossed-out reaction that almost everybody has when they hear that the stepsiblings are dating. Well, it is a little weird. They also get some nice emotional closure relating to their scummy parents and more "normal" siblings (both living and dead), and Harris reveals a lot more about their hellish childhood.

And Harris does a good job sketching out seemingly cliched characters like Aunt Iona and Uncle Hank, who initially act like sour hyper-religious party-poopers, but who eventually are shown to have good hearts. The flipside is the creepy Matthew, who spouts a lot of "rehab therapy" jargon but still obviously has a lot of hatred.

"Grave Secret" is a solid ending to Charlaine Harris's supernatural mystery series, and it ties together the various plot threads pretty neatly. Enjoyable if a bit far-fetched at times.

Mystery Why This Series DId Not Take Off ?
By ChefCheyanne
Now better known for her Sookie Stackhouse series, this series was my first introdution to this authors' work. Having read all her writings, I don't know why this series did not take off. It seems so much deeper and had a melancholy richness that her other stories do not. Considering how deeply skilled this author is, from the silly cozy mysteries to the philosphical quandry of this series--I cannot pass up a book with her name on it. All of her books are keepers, but this series has a special place on my bookshelf. The common theme of her stories is how women cope when undreamed of changes shatter an old life and demand new groundrules. Plus the various "helpers" all come with their own set of challenges. Start at the beginning of this series and allow yourself a place in Harpers' world. Notice how the rhythm of the writing is different--almost slower--and the problems far more tragic and pointed. Be very careful--as is wise Harper--as to who you let get close.

the book is a great paranormal read
By Mallory
If you can get past the brother/boyfriend relationship, the book is a great paranormal read. There has been a lag between this book and the previous ones in the series. While I typically hate a lot of backstory recap, I think that it would have been helpful.

From Publishers Weekly
In the dependably entertaining if less than top-notch fifth Oregon Files thriller from bestseller Cussler and Du Brul (after Skeleton Crew), Capt. Juan Cabrillo, who heads the Corporation, a covert military company for hire, and the multifaceted crew of the Oregon, a high-tech ship disguised to look like a tramp steamer, take on a group known as the Responsivists. The Responsivists publicly espouse a program of global population control, but are secretly planning a devastating attack on the human race utilizing a virulent virus found aboard an ancient ship that may be Noah's Ark. The authors are up to their usual high standards when in fighting mode, though the chief villain, the doctor who heads the Responsivists, falls short of Juan's billing as the single-most-evil human being I have ever met. Readers may wish that next time out the bad guys put up more of a struggle. (June)

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Parker's two non-Spenser leads, Boston PI Sunny Randall, and Paradise, Mass., police chief Jesse Stone, join forces in this breezy, fast-paced whodunit. Buddy Bollen, a sleazy Hollywood producer, hires Sunny to protect his girlfriend, Erin Flint, a stunning action star who's trying to become major league baseball's first female player, for Buddy's franchise, the Connecticut Nutmegs. When one of Erin's entourage turns up dead, Sunny discovers that the deceased was Erin's younger sister, Misty, and that the two share a sordid past. Since the murder takes place on Jesse's quiet turf, the detective and the police chief, both of whom are on the rebound from failed marriages, must take each other's measure and are soon sizing each other up romantically. While the mystery's resolution may be fairly predictable, the witty byplay between the principals and the convincing portrayal of their burgeoning relationship will leave Parker fans eager for the next book to feature Sunny and Jesse as sleuthing and romantic partners. From Booklist
Erin Flint is on all the magazine covers, and her last movie--lotta body, acting not so much--was boffo box office. Her lover-manager, Buddy Bollen, who also owns a major-league baseball team, wants Flint to play for his team--a cameo, but timed to coincide with the release of her next movie. But Erin fears there may be an attempt on her life, so Boston investigator Sunny Randall is hired to be her bodyguard. While working on her batting skills in the resort town of Paradise, one of Erin's entourage is murdered. Sunny, with the blessing of Paradise police chief Jesse Stone--another Parker series regular--sets off to find the killer. Parker has never been big on plots. He's all about character, characters, and snappy dialogue, and all are present here in spades. What makes this special is the dalliance between Stone and Randall. Both are smart, clever, witty, brave, burdened with the weight of past loves, and, well, downright horny. This isn't Parker's best work, but it may be his most lighthearted. Wes Lukowsky

I usually purchase one of Robert Parker's novels to take on vacation. They are easy reading and always a pleasure. I purchased this one for a trip to Cabo, Mexico. It did not let me down. I easily read the book in three days of vacation lounging on a chair over looking the Sea of Cortez.

I recommend the book, the author and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico!
