From Publishers Weekly
Dirk Pitt's 19th adventure, the second collaboration between father and son Clive and Dirk Cussler (after 2004's Black Wind), offers a plot as credible as it is monstrous and the kind of exotic aquatic detail that amazes, informs and entertains. The action, and there's plenty of it, ranges from Siberia's Lake Baikal and the wilds of Mongolia to the Hawaiian islands. The treasure is that of Genghis and Kublai Khan, the great Mongolian conqueror and his grandson. The villain is a modern-day Mongol with dreams of restoring national power and pride. The heroes are Pitt, sidekick Al Giordino and Pitt's son and daughter, Dirk Jr. and Summer, all affiliated with Pitt's National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA). The exploits of Pitt and company, particularly their narrow escapes, tend toward the larger-than-life, but these are nicely balanced by down-to-earth explanations of such phenomena as seiche waves and oil seeps. 750,000 first printing.(Dec.)

From Booklist
Dirk Pitt returns in a fast-paced adventure that takes the latter-day James Bond from a Russian lake to the sands of Mongolia in search of the treasure of Xanadu. Meanwhile, a murderous tycoon is bent on world domination, and only Pitt and his crack NUMA team can stop him. Cussler has been writing the Pitt thrillers for 30-odd years, and he has the recipe down pat. (His son, Dirk, recently has assumed the role of coauthor.) Fans of the long-running series will hungrily gobble this dish of genre pudding, but those who find Cussler's work slick and formulaic won't discover anything here to change their minds. David Pitt

A perfect vacation read!
By OceanCruiser13
It's just want you would want for a vacation read! The book is predictable but not so much that you don't want to turn the page. Quite the contrary. The characters are humorous, the plot stories are well-woven together, and the action just keeps coming. I am already looking forward to the other titles.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Dead Over Heels and the Sookie Stackhouse novels.

Roe is still in mourning over her husband's death when a movie company arrives in Lawrenceton. They've come to make a film based on a book written by her one-time boyfriend Robin Crusoe, a book that detailed their shared investigation of a series of murders that occurred years before.

But when the lead actress-who is playing Roe-is killed, Robin and Roe join forces once again to thwart a killer, without knowing that Roe herself is the next target.

From Publishers Weekly
In her seventh cozy outing, librarian Aurora "Roe" Teagarden is back to form after the downbeat A Fool and His Honey (1999). Roe and her once-significant other, true-crime writer Robin Crusoe, team up to untangle the results of their first foray into detection, Real Murders (1990), in which they caught the killer who'd been terrorizing the sleepy town of Lawrenceton, Ga. Now Robin has capitalized on the experience to write a bestselling novel, which is being made into a TV movie. Of course, it will be shot in Lawrenceton, and the whole town is delighted and eager to be involved, except for Roe. Oh, she's glad to see Robin again after his years in Hollywood, but she's not pleased that the star of the film is Emmy winner Celia Shaw, her successor in Robin's affection, now also cast off. When Roe's unfriendly stepson, Barrett, turns up with a part in the film, she hardens her heart until the second morning of the shoot, when Barrett knocks on Celia's trailer door (after having spent the night there) to find Celia dead, her bloody Emmy beside her. Now Roe feels sorry for Barrett. The first investigator on the scene is another old flame, Detective Arthur Smith. Then Roe herself is threatened first by a venomous letter, later by a Robin Crusoe fan who tries to kill her. Harris's style is well suited to the material, frothy and fast-paced with a wealth of witty descriptions: "Her voice was as crisp as if it'd been in the vegetable drawer overnight." Take a well-earned rest, Roe, don't lose Robin and return soon.

From Library Journal
"Roe" Teagarden relives past history when a movie crew settles in town to make a film based on her first sleuthing adventure (Real Murders). The crew includes both Robin Crusoe, her former co-sleuth and a true-crime writer, and her hate-filled stepson. Before long, murder strikes again. A delightful series.

From Booklist
Aurora "Roe" Teagarden, a librarian in the Atlanta suburb of Lawrenceton, is adjusting to widowhood when she discovers that her former boyfriend, Robin Crusoe, is back in town. The two collaborated to catch a serial killer in the series debut, Real Murders (1990). Robin, a true-crime writer, has sold his book about those murders to a studio making a television movie. When the cast and crew arrive to film on location, Roe becomes the object of unwanted attention because of her role in solving the crime. The stepson who despises her is a cast member, and the starlet playing her is ambitious and rude. When the actress turns up dead, Aurora must find the killer before she becomes the next victim. Cozy fans will enjoy this latest version of a popular theme--the small town disrupted by Hollywood antics (see Joan Hess' Mortal Remains in Maggody, 1991)--and Aurora's rekindled romance with Crusoe will provide fuel for the next episode in the series. Roe's getting back on the track...
By Suzy Shedd
and it's typical that it needed a murder to rouse her. This series seems to have recovered a little of the light-heartedness that had dimmed over the last few books, but it is NOT (despite idiot jacket blurbs) a "cozy."
The plot is thinner than is typical in a Harris mystery -- mostly, I think,so readers can get to know the "new" Roe -- a woman who was widowed with shocking suddenness as an almost incidental incident in a series of nasty crimes. Harris does an excellent job with Roe's gradual recovery, though she focuses exclusively on Martin Bartell's death and ignores the trauma and misery that must have resulted from the attendant crimes. And what would be sufficient to distract Aurora Teagarden in her half-frozen state? Murders old and new, of course.
The movies are coming to town, and they are filming a script based on a true-crime book dealing with a horrid series of murders that plagued Lawrenceton many years earlier. Roe had been instrumental in exposing the killers in that case (nearly dying herself in the process). Roe is NOT happy about this movie, which tastelessly commercializes the deaths of people she knew and cared about, but the rest of the town is star struck. The movie provides an excellent vehichle for bringing Roe's sullen and immature stepson, Barrett, and her one-time, almost-boyfriend, Robin (author of the true crime book), back to town.
However, the movie set is not where Roe finds important information about the new crimes in Lawrenceton. It's her library's collection that holds some of the keys to the mysteries. The murder itself has a fairly wispy plot with not much of anything to detect; the associated crimes are somewhat more melodramatic.
If you've been reading this series, you'll enjoy the development of several long-time characters, as well as Roe's deepening relationship with her mother. This book does a great job in setting up the next one, and it is absorbing to read. If you are new to the series, though, do NOT read this one first. It doesn't quite stand alone.

Roe is back, and it's good to see her
By Booked4Life
Charlaine Harris is an interesting mystery writer, in part because she is willing to take chances in her books. In Roe's last outing, A Fool and His Honey, an abrupt death near the end of the book brings the reader up short. We are not used to having sympathetic, continuing characters die in mystery fiction.
But, of course, life is like that.
In this outing, the mystery situation is pretty farfetched, but Harris makes it enjoyable, by bringing us along as Roe Teagarden re-enters her life following the death of her beloved husband.
A fast, fun read, but not the best of the series. Still--worth your time.

Fascinating story and lead character - highly recommended.
By One-Reader
Diminutive librarian Aurora Teagarden learns that Robin Crusoe, a true crime writer, she worked with many years ago to solve a string of murders is returning to Lawrenceton, GA. He is coming to film a movie based on his book about the murders. Of course, when the crew arrives, additional murders are in the future.

This is a mystery; in reality they're a number of mysteries in the book. In terms of the protagonist's extended description of her emotions and social interactions, there might be a temptation to classify this as a cozy mystery, except for the tasteful and non-gratuitous descriptions of a number of sexual encounters.

The author has no dearth of characters. In the first chapter alone she identifies, by name, between one and two-dozen characters, and in the next two chapters she probably doubles that number. New named characters are added in subsequent chapters. This has the effect of making the story seem real. It also means that unless you have a very good memory, you will need to make some notes about the characters when they first appear, as there is no indication as to which will prove important later on.

Unusually for a mystery, here the protagonist's personality was as interesting as the main plot. Ms. Harris' has the unique ability to make you feel that Aurora is a real, rather than fictional, person and talking to you as a close friend. She presents Aurora so that she's easy to like, and wish you had her as a next-door neighbor.

Considering the high quality of the writing, there were some unexpected, albeit minor, editing flaws, e.g., "of" instead of "for", "a on a" instead of just "on a", "that" instead of "than", etc. These proved to be only minor reading distractions.

This is not a "thrill-a-minute" mystery with heart stopping action, although there is a fair amount of action. Rather it is an exceptionally well-written story with outstanding in-depth character development and a satisfying mystery.

This is a novel I can recommend without hesitation. It is one I found find hard to put down; fortunately, it can be easily read in one sitting.

Introduction to information only
By Brian Reaves
If you're a fan of the TV show, you'll be intrigued by the premise of this book and want to dive into the secrets of what makes Patrick Jane so awesome. Unfortunately for you, this book won't open the doors for you that you're hoping for. This book serves mostly as a primer, giving you basic information for particular things he does, without giving you any real meat to make it happen for yourself. If you have no experience in mentalism effects or hypnosis, then this is a way for you to sound informed at a party. However, putting any of these in practice will be hard.

To the book's credit, it does reference particular episodes to explain what the author is talking about. That does make it relevant to the show. And it's not that thick, so you'll be able to knock this out in just a few hours.

Really want to amaze folks? There are several books that would give you enough information to be effective, though you would need to read each for a particular area. The Encyclopedia of Cold Reading (all you would need to prove yourself a mind reader), Anneman's Mental Miracles (to show off a little), and a basic hypnosis book (if you're willing to put in the practice time) would be more beneficial if you are truly interested in "how to be a mentalist". If you're just interested in a little more depth on what they do in the show, pick this up.

Popcorn Reading Meant to Divert Audiences
By Ross Raffin
This book is the result of a mentalist selling a product to his audience, not a mentalist explaining mentalism.

He perpetuates Mentalist myths like Derren Brown's NLP and gives readers the explanation that Mentalists use to make their "magic" seem more credible. When he explains things (like telepathy acts), he gives a routine so watered down that any amateur could detect the pattern.

If you want to learn about mentalism, read Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism.

This book isn't even authorized by the actual writer's of The Mentalist.

Great Outline
By AJ
Some other reviewers have complained that this book doesn't go into enough detail about how to become a mentalist. Well duh! Mentalism, at least as far I understand it, is a multi-dimensional field encompassing a broad range of subjects like hypnosis, lie detection, reading body language, showmanship, etc etc. It would be impossible to cover all these subjects and teach anyone how to be effective. What this book DOES do is give you a broad outline, an overview of the subjects you need to become familiar with and then proficient at. The rest is up to you. It help me understand mentalism and gave me a solid outline so I can now continue my studies.

Out of the Light, Into the Shadows
By jjmachshev
Two authors, three pen names, and four solid stories make up the "Out of the Light, Into the Shadows anthology. Lori Foster (AND her alterego LL Foster) and Erin McCarthy each pen two connected stories for this anthology. The total? Three paranormals, one contemporary, and one very happy reader.

Foster opens with "Have Mercy" about a hunky hero with a tragic past learning to open himself up to a love-filled future. Her writing just grabs my heart every time. Not to mention her sex scenes will make you sweat!

Then comes McCarthy's "Deal or No Deal" set in her 'Vegas Vampires' world. She was once Princess Anastasia, now she's a vegas dealer thanks to the man she loved who betrayed her family. Or did he? I just love reunion romance...even if it takes 100 years!

LL Foster adds "Total Control" which had me not just sweating, but looking for a cigarette! The heroine's brother from "Have Mercy" has some talents his little sister doesn't know about. He'll only share his secret with the woman who can calm his beast. Smoking hot Alpha alert!!

Last is McCarthy's "Undead Man's Hand" starring a secondary character from "Deal or No Deal". Take one murder detective, stir in a vampire body guard, season with a wacko 100-year old teenage vampire and you'll get a short murder mystery with hot sex to boot.

Foster plays with my emotions and McCarthy's Vegas vamps are something totally different from the norm. This one goes on my keeper shelf.

Fell flat for me!
By Susie
Out of the Light, Into the Shadows is a novella with four short stories in it by Lori Foster, Erin McCarthy, and L.L. Foster (I am assuming that this is Lori Foster). The stories just didn't connect well with me, and fell somewhat flat except for the last one which I enjoyed reading the most. I was also assuming that all of the stories would have a paranormal feel, but the first one doesn't.

The first story, Lori Foster's Have Mercy, was okay, but wasn't spectacular. It was a contemporary romance with a heroine who falls in love with the hero who has a tragic past and doesn't see himself having kids. Low and behold, the heroine is pregnant with his child and is afraid of what he will say. Now, I will say that this story had some good steamy scenes, and I liked the hero and heroine, but I've read this storyline before.

The second story, Erin McCarthy's Deal or No Deal, takes place in Vegas with her Vegas Vampires. The premise was really interesting with this one with some of the last tsar of Russia's family members being saved during the Revolution and turned into vampires who are now living in Las Vegas. Maria or Katie is one of them and she is now a black jack dealer. Her boyfriend/fiance from her life in Russia finds out that she is living and takes off in pursuit of her because he is still in love with her after all these years. He thought that she was dead, and she thought that he was a traitor to her family. But watch out, Rasputin is still alive as well, and he is after a necklace that Katie has in her possession. This was a decent read, the ending was somewhat anticlimactic, but the love story itself was what held my attention.

The third story by L.L. Foster, Total Control, was least favorite. The hero was a pushy jerk who needed a good slap across his face. The brother of the heroine from the first story was the hero in this one. But in this one, he has mind powers which can make people do things that he wants so there was a paranormal element to this one. I will say that it did have bucket loads of steam, but I didn't like how the hero tried to use his special mind powers on the heroine.

The last story by Erin McCarthy, Undead Man's Hand, was my favorite of the four. The hero in this one, Nick Stolin, is the vampire who turned Maria/Katie in the second story. He is also protector to her and her thirteen-year-old brother, Peter. There are murders being committed in Vegas and the heroine, Jordan, is on the hunt for the killer. She meets the vampire Nick when she has to question Nick's babysitter and Peter. Nick is highly attracted to Jordan and wants to go out with her. Jordan has some body issues (don't we all), but she wants to get to know Nick better too except she doesn't know that he is a vampire. Kelsey and Ringo are also back from Erin McCarthy's Vegas Vampires series, and they are again being their weird selves. But I like them anyway. I like reading about them and wish that Ringo would get off of the drugs already. But what I love about Erin's writing is that she isn't afraid to show people's weaknesses and how messed up "good" people can really be. She is one of my favorite authors because her writing seems very honest and not flowery when it comes to people's character.

Out of the Light, Into the Shadows
By Kathy E.
This anthology seemed to be split into different genres. The first anthology "Have Mercy" was more contemporary, the second novella "Deal or No Deal" more paranormal romance and the last two novellas "Total Control" and Undead Man's Hand" being more dark paranormal romance fantasy (which I prefer).

Lori Foster "Have Mercy" Mercedes Jardine has found the man of her dreams, Wyatt Reyes, unfortunately he comes with a tragic past and has a result of that past, causes him to shy away from marriage or starting a family. When Mercedes finds out she's pregnant, Wyatt must prove to Mercedes and her overprotective brother Braxton that he can tear down his walls, come to terms with his demons and be the father and husband Mercedes needs him to be. Wyatt and Mercedes have great chemistry and very hot sex scenes. There was no direct paranormal involved with this particular novella. However, the love that Wyatt and Mercedes share is magical. For those readers looking for a happily ever after (HEA), this story fits the bill. This novella was well done and was able to hold my attention. However, there was more romance in this novella than I usually prefer to read; but the way Lori created the characters, made you want to care about them and see what happens next. 3.5/5

Erin McCarthy "Deal or No Deal" This was another HEA that held my attention and made me care about the characters. Katie Stolin, a former Russian princess and century old vampire, reunites with a lost love and sets out to avenge her family's slaughtering. This story was extremely predictable, albeit interesting, it did feel complete and smoothly done. 3.5/5

L.L. Foster "Total Control" Braxton Jardine has a complicated life. He's big brother to Mercedes Jardine who has a baby on the way, a successful businessman by day and also a vigilante, dispensing his own brand of justice to criminals by night. Finally his eyes are open and he figures out that the love of his life, his assistant Cameo, has been in front of him the whole time. Things get problematic when a pair of sexual sadists he's been chasing, goes after Cameo and puts her life in danger. This was an interesting story. Braxton's character reminds me of the heroine from L.L Foster's The Servant series, Gaby. Braxton and Cameo have sizzling chemistry and I enjoyed this short story a bit more than Foster's other novella. This novella was darker, more dangerous and sexy. 5/5

Erin McCarthy "Undead Man's Hand" This novella uses the supporting characters from Erin's previous novella, Deal or No Deal. Detective Jordan Water's, searches for a vicious serial killer on the Las Vegas strip. Someone has been violently murdering women in the most heinous of ways and leaving their bodies in humiliating poses to be discovered. This story was exciting, mysterious and interesting. This novella was only 89 pages long but the characters were well developed. The story was so smoothly done and complete, I felt like I read an entire book. 5/5

I got this anthology for L.L. Foster's "Total Control" novella. I am a big fan of her The Servant series and figured I'd give this a chance. All of the stories had more romance in them than I usually prefer to read. However, I did get a pleasant surprise by discovering Erin McCarthy. I've never read anything from Erin but judging her from the "Undead Man's Hand" novella, I would probably seek out her series in the future.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans will best appreciate the 14 often darkly humorous fictions in bestseller Hamilton's first story collection, which includes several unpublished tales. Stories like "Selling Houses," in which a determined real estate agent faces up to the difficulties of selling a house where a gruesome mass murder has taken place, and "Here Be Dragons," a horrific account of a psychic child whose dreams can kill, show talent but need polish. Anita Blake aficionados, though, will relish the opener, "Those Who Seek Forgiveness," with its early version of a somewhat naïve vampire hunter. Stories set in the sword-and-sorcery world of Hamilton's first novel, Nightseer—"A Token for Celandine," "Winterkill," "The Curse-maker" and "Stealing Souls"—reveal that she has always had a talent for portraying strong female characters. Brief author introductions to each selection provide context. (Oct.)

From AudioFile
This is an exciting collection of fantastical, fascinating, and funny short stories from Hamilton's gifted pen. Cynthia Holloway does an expert job with the many strong female characters that are the author's stock in trade. Each story begins with a short historical vignette from the author, which Holloway delivers so well we feel we're listening to the author herself provide the broad context for the story to come. Holloway also does a skillful job with audio effects, such as a voice from a radio or a public address system or someone on the other end of a phone conversation. An enjoyable listen--even for those not into the more well-known vampire-hunter series from Hamilton. M.C. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine

A tasty surprise!
By CoffeeGurl
I have given up on the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novels and am hanging on a very thin thread with the Merry Gentry series because those serials are not what they used to be. However, I heard that this book contained short stories written years ago, in the beginning of Laurell K. Hamilton's career as a writer. And so, I decided to give it a whirl by checking it out of the library. (I am still in the "live and learn" mentality when it comes to buying books by this author.) I was pleasantly surprised with this compilation. Strange Candy contains various pre-published and never-before-published short stories that will satisfy your craving for dark and sensual gothic/fantasy tales. I loved the dark language in the stories and this book has reaffirmed my opinion that Hamilton has one of the best imaginations and ability to create great story development and flawless characterization I have read. I loved the stories, especially "Stealing Souls," "Selling Houses" (which is set in the Anitaverse, but without Anita or other recurring characters), and "A Token for Celandine." But my big favorites are the following three: "Those Who Seek Forgiveness," which is the very first Anita Blake story. Those who love Anita's earlier installments will enjoy this one. However, do not expect Jean-Claude or any of the other recurring characters to appear, for this is Anita Blake long before the Anitaverse was created. "A Lust of Cupids" is the shortest of them all and also the cutest. It was nice to read a more lighthearted short story and this one made me smile. My absolute favorite in the collection is "The Edge of the Sea." This is the story of a merman serial killer, one who seduces women and then kills them. This one is truly brilliant and I wish Hamilton would write an Anita Blake novel with a central plot similar to this one (that is if she ever goes back to writing books with an actual plot in them). Now that she's introduced merpeople in her series she might as well do something useful with them. All in all, Strange Candy is a wonderful and surprising treat. I almost regret not having bought it. If only this once beloved author would go back to the storytelling that had once characterized her and made her successful I'd be a very happy camper. In the meantime, I have her old Anita Blake novels to reread and enjoy. I may give Mistral's Kiss a whirl and hope it'll be something along the same lines of this book, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well worth your time
By Amazon Customer
Favorite author. I've been reading her books for years now, and she never fails to satisfy my love for this subject matter.I love everything she writes-and I live near St. Louis. Cool seeing places I know named in her books. I love books on this subject and several other authors, too, but Hamilton is the best. She packs a lot in a short time frame! Very detailed descriptions of activities and what is going on in the thoughts of the characters. I could do with less sex and violence most of the time, but love the books, anyway as the stories are so good. The variety in Strange Candy was very exciting to read and I hope she does more of this in the future. Some of the characters I had never seen before, so seeing something new from her was really nice. Short stories are a nice change.

Thoroughly fascinating and mostly fun!
By Alisha A. Henri
When I discovered this book was a compilation of Laurell K. Hamilton's stories mostly other than from Anita Blake's world, I was interested. By the time I finished the first my mind was happily engaged. I'd already read the final story, which was an Anita story (and one that I still found good reading a second time), but I truly enjoyed every story especially the two with Leech. The story about Jasmine was a little too dark for me, but still good reading. A very worthwhile purchase that displays Ms. Hamilton's talented writing and wonderfully weird imagination.

An inspiring Chritmas story
By B. Smith
This is the fourth in a series of Christmas books that Thomas Kincaid has taken a part in the writing thereof. The novels are set in the ficticious town of Cape Light and as you read each one you become more familiar with the citizens and their families and the daily lives they lead.
There is always a test of faith and courage involved. This new novel is especially charming and inspiring. Trust, doubt, belief and values make up the content.
I found "A Christmas Visitor' especially moving as each person faced and solved their problems with the aid of some special people and an 'Angel' that visits Cape Light for the Christmas season.
I look forward every year to Kincaid's Christmas stories.
The other four books are equally as good as they too take place in Cape Light just in a different time of year.

Nice addition to series
By T. Johnson
I am a huge fan of the 'Cape Light' series. This book was definately better than the last installment but it's the 4th christmas themed book that they've put out. It would be nice to see a change of setting in the next book besides Christmas. There were 3 story lines to follow in this one and although I understood and could easily follow them, I found myself wishing they were a bit more 'filled' out. For someone who has not been reading the series, they would like this book but should start from the beginning to fully grasp the stories. Nice book to cozy up and read.

Would give it a zero if I could
By ChristianReader
I have read other books in this series and they are happy little easy reading stories, sort of like a Hallmark movie (some of them have been Hallmark movies I believe). This one has two story lines that are fine, with the exception of the real stupidity of a mother with two girls about to leave for college and one in high school and they don't even know that when setting the table for a big fancy Christmas dinner they need to put forks on the table, and then when the parents need to leave suddenly when the family is at the park she asks her sister in law to "watch the girls". Really? Are they going to push other kids off swings or throw sand? I could see asking her to make sure they get home or please tell them where she's gone but if they need watching they probably shouldn't leave for college.

The real problem is in the third story about a pastor trying to figure out if the angel statue in the church is performing miracles. Scripture is pretty clear about idolatry and that is all this is. No matter how pretty a piece of wood is carved and painted it is nothing more than a pretty piece of wood. God works miracles. Art is beautiful but unable to actually do anything at all.

In addition to the very defnite idolatry in the story line, this pastor is the worst and most unqualified minister I've read of in a long time. He did not seem to know anything of what the Bible teaches and instead of being a spiritual leader for the people, he went to the council to have them take a vote on what he should teach. And then he handled everything in his church in a completely inadequate, unprofessional way. I don't recall that it even mentions that he sought God's guidance through prayer or ever opened a Bible. He is just a blithering, dithery, willy-nilly idiot.

This book is going straight into the trash.

A killer start to a new series
By L. Gondelman
Welcome to Oyster Bay, North Carolina where the living is easy and murder is on the mind.

Olivia Limoges has returned to the hometown she left as a young girl. She is rich, stunning, suffering from a case of writers block and still a mystery to the locals, and often keeping only the company of her loyal poodle Captain Haviland. She also owns the local five star restaurant and has invested a lot in local properties, becoming landlord to many of the businesses around her. While having breakfast at the local diner she overhears some people talking "book stuff." Dixie, her friend and waitress explains that they are a group called the Bayside Book Writers and encourages her to join. She hesitates until she speaks with Camden Ford, the apparent leader of the group. She finds him witty, charming and impossible to refuse. Olivia decides that she is going to fix up the lighthouse cottage on her property for their meetings.

It looks like things are improving for Olivia, particularly in the friend department, until people start showing up dead. When one of her new friends winds up dead, with of all things a Haiku poem left next to the body, Olivia and her writer friends know they will do whatever they can to find out who is responsible for the murder. But can they figure it out before more bodies start to fall? Do the murders have to do with the gossip book one of their group members is writing about a well know family, the desire to push through a new housing development no matter what the cost, or something else no one could have possibly anticipated?

A Killer Plot is a fantastic start to a new series. The characters are fun, fresh and a bit on the eccentric side. There is Dixie, the roller skating dwarf waitress, Harris the computer geek who suffers from a serious case of Rosacea, and Millay the bartender, who likes to show up with her hair a different color each time they meet. These are just a few of the fun people you will meet in this charming first book of the Books By The Bay Mystery series. The characters are believable and the author gives the reader great insight into the world of a writer. With new friendships, possible romance(s) and promises of great things to come, A Killer Plot is one book you don't want to be caught dead missing.

Fun and challenging!
By Jeffrey Cohen
This shoreline mystery is definitely a great beach read--others have recapped the plot, so I'll just say it's fun, it's fresh, the characters are real people (not cardboard cutouts bound to the plot and nothing else) and the dialogue rings true. This is a terrific debut, and it promises much, much more to come! We want more Olivia!

Two Books In One
By Dialdancer
For those wondering where to buy or not, this is (The Target and The Edge) together in one book. I enjoyed both books very much and still re-read them from time to time, but I would be very disappointed to order this book and find out I already have it in two other novels.

Both are excellent books if you have never read them
By MARY ANN HOLLMAN
I am glad that I read the first customers review more in depth before purchasing this book off my wish list. I have already read both of these and didn't realize that they were reissues together under a different cover. The Maze was the first book I ever read by her and was hooked. Excellent book, and I still believe her best to date. But both of these "The Target" and "The Edge" are good books in their own right as well.

Goddess of Light
By Amazon Customer
P.C. Cast Goddess Summoning series seems to be based on simple story lines and uncomplicated characters. This book follows that lead. Normally, I would not judge so harshly since the book was pretty much what I expected after reading Goddess of Spring and Goddess of the Sea but Cast did one thing that I cannot stand, name dropping. The book read like an advertisement, especially at the beginning thought she did lay off the name brands towards the end.

Pamela was not a leading lady I cared for. First, she was sort of a snob, since it her character that mentally noticed all the name brands. She also seemed very judgmental toward her client and men in general. She did tone down as the romance progressed, but I don't think she did anything to earn Apollo.

Apollo was a nice leading man but I can't figure out why he has one conversation with Pamela and knows that she is his soul mate. The man has lived for eons and has never found one person more interesting than Pamela? Seriously?

Artemis came off exactly how the author wrote her. Self assured, selfish, self absorbed. She was an excellent supporting character.

Bacchus read as disgusting. The visual imagery was shuddering. As an antagonistic for the book he was superb. Cast wrote him as a hateful, abusive character and he was just that. The reasons why he was targeting Apollo and Pamela are shaky, though jealousy has always been more than enough motivator; it just seemed to come up in the story suddenly and without explanation.

A true romance!
By Bluebyyou
I loved this book.

Recovering from a smoothering, emotionally abusive marriage, interior designer Pamela Grey goes to Las Vegas to meet with a new client and, while wishing for true romance after too many glasses of wine, she accidentally invokes the reluctant aid of the Goddess Artemis.

The God Apollo, after witnessing the true love between Hades, God of the Underworld, and a mortal woman (from 'Goddess of Spring'), has decided there is something missing in his life. On a visit to the 'Kingdom of Las Vegas', his twin sister Artemis is entangled in a mortal's wish for romance and he realizes this might be the answer to his quest for something 'more'.

They come together both hoping to find a 'real' person, a soul mate who can fulfil the secret desire for love inside of each of them.

'Goddess of Light' highlights a woman's struggle to overcome her fear of being deceived again by love and a man's need to be completed by love. Add to this the fun and frolic of Las Vegas, Artemis's conflict between her selfish nature and love for her brother, E.D. Faust's (Pamela's client) strange combination of eccentricities and wisdom, Pamela's gay assistant's caustic humour and Dionysus's resentment at having 'his' realm of Las Vegas invaded by the other deities and the story becomes a fast-paced romantic tale of laughter and love entwined with wonder and danger.

The only thing I didn't like was the ending. I would have preferred something closer to the 'Goddess of Spring's ending although I have to admit Apollo's sacrifice was in line with what he said he wanted all along.
