Callie Parrish series is excellent!
By Kate Emburg
Just when you thought all the good jobs for amateur sleuths had been taken, a plucky and funny heroine rises above the endless cooks, writers, tour guides, and antique shop owners that populate today's cozies. Callie Parrish is a make-up artist for corpses. Since she works at a funeral home, this neatly answers the often-problematic question of why the series heroine keeps encountering dead bodies; in Callie's case, it's all part of the job, and every death has a story behind it. A TISKET, A TASKET, A FANCY STOLEN CASKET is a worthy start to the series. Catchy titles, no explicit gore, lively first-person writing style, and just enough danger and romance to spice up the story. If you're a fan of Maddy Hunter, Susan Rogers Cooper, or Elaine Viets, this one's for you!

Good read, from title to last page
By Armchair Interviews
Author Fran Rizer has created a delightful sleuth with Callie Parrish, a mortuary cosmetologist at Middleton's, an established South Carolina mortuary. Callie now works for Otis and Odell Middleton, both real characters, after a short stint teaching kindergarten and a brief and unpleasant marriage.

Callie is called to come in early to help make arrangements for the viewing and funeral of popular Bobby Saxon, a local car salesman, drinker, and womanizer. His most recent wife, brash and bouncy Betty, is coming in to make the arrangements. Bobby was the age of Callie's older brothers, in his mid 40s, but his most recent wife was a school friend of Callie's, fifteen years younger.

While applying makeup and styling Bobby's hair, Callie discovers a needle broken off in Bobby's neck. The idiot coroner decided he would accept drowning as cause of death because Bobby was found floating face down in a swimming pool and was known to be a heavy drinker. Now an autopsy must be done! Bobby's fancy, but empty, casket is stolen, and Callie is hit on the head outside the mortuary.

The dreamy emergency room doctor, Dr. Don Walters, has decided that Callie is dateable, and after she is released with few stitches, he manages to arrange a date. Jane, Callie's best friend, despite being blind, is her "Watson" in figuring out motives and trying to solve the crimes. Then local bar owner, June Bug Corley, is found shot in his parking lot. Callie becomes a target; she receives nasty threatening phone calls and someone tries to break into her house. Are the two deaths connected?

Will Callie figure out who is behind the deaths, before she is killed? Will her new dog Big Boy, a Great Dane puppy, ever let her finish a date with Dr. Don?

Armchair Interviews says: This is the first of three books, and they promise to be as much fun as this one.

Working with the Dead is Murder
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
It's another typical day for mortuary cosmetologist Callie Parrish. Today's body is local car salesman Bobby Saxon who drowned in a pool. At least that's the official story until Callie discovers a hypodermic needle in his neck. Suddenly, the funeral plans are on hold for an autopsy.

But things get even weirder that night. Callie is just closing down the funeral home when someone hits her over the head. When she wakes up, Bobby's fancy casket is missing. Was the thief after Bobby's body? Or was there some over motive for stealing the casket?

This is a book of mixed reactions. I mostly liked Callie and her "kindergarten swearing." But her constant discussions about her new inflatable bras made me uncomfortable. I didn't much care for her morally challenged best friend, either. It's not that I expect perfection from the characters, but at least a sense of morals from the heroes really helps.

The plot was entertaining, and the narration mostly charming. I did find Callie's stretching out of excuse or believe me and please got old in a hurry. The plot had several twists. I pegged the killer early on, but kept being distracted and forgetting about him or her. The book was surprisingly light for a novel set in a funeral home, but it never once made light of anyone's grief.

In the end, this isn't a bad debut, but I didn't love it either. I'm sure others will love the characters more then I did, which was the major stumbling block for me.

For new Coulter fans only
By Lianne S. Greve
If you are new to Catherine Coulter's FBI series, this is definitely a great book to buy. But for those who own Coulter titles, this is a reprint of two previous novels and should be labeled accordingly. I realize that authors need to reprint to attract a new audience, but there should be some consideration to longtime fans.

Back to the Beginning
By Terry A. Benedict-Devine
Being a recent Coulter fan, I was glad to be taken back to the roots of her FBI series. The Cove and The Maze are her first two books in that series, being written back in the mid-90's.
We meet Sally St. John, escaping to her aunt's home in The Cove, running from her shadowy past and an institution that her family, back in Washington, DC had placed her after her father's murder. Dr. Beadermeyer heads that sanitarium and has seen to it that Sally is mentally and physically abused on a daily basis as well as being routinely drugged. In addition to this atrocity, someone is also paying big dollars to keep Sally in this high-end institution. Sally's escape brings her to her Aunt Amabel and a town that seems like a strange fairy tale land; only old people reside in this town that has been completely refurbished. Sally's aunt seems to be concerned for her welfare but through the course of the story and the entrance of FBI agent, James Quinlan, Sally becomes leery of her father's death(?) and the circumstances behind it as well as the questionably "good" intentions of Amabel.
The Maze is a real thriller and our introduction to Lacey Sherlock, recently graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA and in search of her half sister's killer, seven years prior. Belinda Madigan was brutally murdered and Sherlock literally cannot rest (and has repeated nightmare's) until this madman is found. Sherlock is teamed up with Special Agent Dillon Savich for the first time in this story. Savich is impressed with the way Sherlock handles herself on a Hogan's Alley simulated bank robbery and takes her out with him for her first "real time" assignment. Through the course of their work together, Savich discovers the reason Sherlock decided to give up her studies in music and become an agent - to find her sister's murderer. They set out to unravel the mystery behind Belinda's murder as it is connected to the String killer, taking his victims through a Maze that they must follow with a string to the end to be killed as they "lose the game" in the center of the Maze.
Both stories are great foundations for getting to know this fine author and her FBI series.

Terribly Disap
By Andrea
What can I say about this book except, it really left me speechless. I loved the first 3 books. I liked that they were just well written love stories about people you would love to know. Then I get this book and as I started reading, I thought to myself, you have to be kidding me. I kept re-reading the synopsis on the back thinking, "Did I miss something?" But no. There was no forewarning of the impending doom of this book.

Don't get me wrong, I love sci-fi, I love paranormal, I love the unexplained and the unexpected, but when you start reading a series about fighters and their women only have the whole thing be turned upside down on you it is bitterly disappointing.

I can't even bring myself to finish the book. I don't like the way she has written the character of Mallet and I hate the mother character and even how she describes her vision of the future.

If you really want a good read, please don't buy this book.

Sepulchre, by Kate Mosse

From the New York Times bestselling author of Labyrinth-"a rich brew of supernaturalism and intrigue."(Kirkus Reviews)

In 1891, young Léonie Vernier and her brother arrive at the home of their widowed aunt in Rennes-le-Bains, in southwest France. But nothing is as Léonie had imagined. Their aunt is young, willowy, and beautiful, and the estate is a subject of local superstition. Villagers claim that Léonie's late uncle died after summoning a demon from the old Visigoth sepulchre on its grounds...

More than a century later, Meredith Martin, an American graduate student, arrives in Rennes-le- Bains while researching the life of Claude Debussy. Haunted by a Tarot reading she had in Paris-and possessing the mysterious deck of cards-she checks into a grand old hotel built on the site of a famous mountain estate destroyed by fire in 1896. There, the pack of Tarot cards and a piece of 19th-century music known as Sepulchre 1891 hold the key to her fate-just as they did to the fate of Léonie Vernier.

From Publishers Weekly
Contrivance, cliché and expository overkill overwhelm bestseller Mosse's tale concerning a rare tarot deck that helps link the lives of two women living eras apart. In 1891, Parisian teenager Léonie Vernier and her brother visit their young aunt at an estate in southern France. After finding a startling account of her late uncle's pursuit of the occult, Léonie scours the property for the tarot cards and Visigoth tomb he describes, unaware that more tangible peril in the form of a murderous stalker is seeking to destroy her loved ones. Present-day biographer Meredith Martin is in France finishing a book and tracing her ancestry when she sees a reproduction of the same tarot, which bears her likeness. She investigates the connection when she, too, arrives at the estate, now a hotel in which a new battle between good and evil rages. Mosse (Labyrinth) conveys so much unnecessary information through so many static scenes of talk, reading and interior monologue that the book's momentum stalls for good soon after its striking opening. Mosse's fans will hope for a return to form next time. (Apr.)

A Worthy Second Effort
By Robert Abidor
I purchased Sepulchre from Amazon UK so got to read it well before the US release. I too disagree with some of the harsh criticism that Mosse's book received. Part of the joy of reading period historical fiction is becoming part of the atmosphere. You can't do that in a few pages. You need to set the scene, create interest in characters and situations and come to understand where the author is taking you.

I found Sepulchre to be more similar to The Historian than to Labyrinth. A fairly complex plot over several time periods and places requires a depth of material. I found the descriptions of Paris excellent and in fact purchased Zola's Debacle after reading one of the character's discussion of the work. The action in the Carcasonne region is compelling.

I did not find the characters at all one dimensional. All express feelings and reactions that are well within the expected range. The story line is always interesting. Perhaps the reader needs some familiarity with French fiction of the period, like Victor Hugo's works to fully understand what Mosse is attempting. Also, the subject area should be very familiar to readers of recent fiction as it has been used in the DaVinci Code, The Templars and several other stories. The rich historical venue is a perfect setting for Sepulchre.

I found Mosse's second novel to be a fascinating addition to understanding the Church's purge of the Cathars and the treasures and threats that area possesses. Summer is coming. Sit on your favorite chair, take a cold drink and be prepared to be totally entertained by Sepulchre. I was.

An Intelligent Reader's Mystery
By Avidreader
I disagree with the other reviews completely. I thought this novel was superior to Labyrinth which I also enjoyed. This story moves seamlessly back and forth between the 1800s and the current time with two intertwined stories and heroines. The female characters are strong and interesting. Ms. Mosse took her time with the details which make this ghost story almost seem possible! Would love to see this one as a movie. The imagery and locale would be delightful to see on the big screen. Not a single boring moment in this entire novel! I'll be recommending this one to all my reading friends.

Worthy read
By S. Ling
I am in total agreement with the reviewer who wrote the following: "I found Sepulchre to be more similar to The Historian than to Labyrinth. A fairly complex plot over several time periods and places requires a depth of material." Anyone who enjoyed the novel "The Historian" will enjoy this book, and vice versa. The books have the same feel to them. Anyone who does not enjoy heavy description of location, atmosphere and ambiance will get bogged down, I agree... but for those of us who expect the author to paint word pictures so as to draw us into the narrative will not be disappointed. You can see, hear and feel where the characters are in this book. I look forward to more books by Ms. Mosse.

The Tory Widow, by Christine Blevins

From the "talented"(Bertrice Small) author of Midwife of the Blue Ridge, a stirring novel set on the brink of the American Revolution.

On a bright May day in New York City, Anne Peabody receives an unexpected kiss from a stranger. Bringing news of the repeal of the Stamp Act, Jack Hampton, a member of the Sons of Liberty, abruptly sweeps Anne into his arms, kisses her-and then leaves her to her fate of an arranged marriage...

1775: Nearly ten years have passed and Anne, now the Widow Merrick, continues her late husband's business printing Tory propaganda, not because she believes in the cause, but because she needs the money to survive. When her shop is ransacked by the Sons of Liberty, Anne once again comes face to face with Jack and finds herself drawn to the ardent patriot and his rebel cause.

As shots ring out at Lexington and war erupts, Anne is faced with a life-altering decision: sit back and watch her world torn apart, or stand and fight for both her country's independence and her own.

Fascinating View Of New York City During The Revolution
By Christina R.
This novel was a fascinating portrait of a widow fighting to maintain her independence and also an in depth portrait of one of the Colonies greatest ports (New York City)during the Revolutionary War.

The story of Anne has been described already. I would just say that I found Jack to be a rather unsympathetic hero. He came across as being very inconsiderate at times to the point of being shallow. The author never gave a clear reason why Jack left Anne and Sally alone for eight months in New York City when it was occupied by the British. But for me that was unconscienable. I liked both Anne and Sally and felt that their characters were well-written and very believable. I even felt sorry for the British Captain who fell in love with Anne.

The indepth picture of New York City as it was passed from Patriot hands into Loyalist occupation fascinated me the most. This novel is a rich historical giving a vivid and emotional picture of the plight of this great city and its inhabitants during the Revolution. The story is filled with interesting characters from both sides of the war. I was especially pleased to read in the Epilogues that so many of these characters in the book were taken from real life. This author did her research well and thus produced a novel that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

I will definitely be looking for her next novel with great anticipation. if you are looking for a vivid and accurate portrayal of New York City during The Revolutionay War this is the book to buy.

Really good read
By HHK
If you like a little romance mixed in with your historical fiction, you will enjoy this book.

The setting is Colonial US in the 1700's. Our heroine is plucky survivor. She has survived marriage to an older husband and the death of a child. She runs her own business and despite changes in the poltical climate manages to adapt to her circumstances.

Having said that there are a few cliches:
1.Determined plucky heroine
2.Prostitute with heart of gold who also loves the hero and dies, thus leaving the path clear for our heroine
3.Red haired Scottish girl friend with a brogue and a heart of gold
4.Freed slave with a heart of gold
5.Ugly,older first husband with hair in his ear!
6.Dark haired, devil may care hero
7.Mean father who wants to sell his daughter to the highest bidder for his personal gain

Despite, the above cliches, the prose is well written and the story will suck you in, so be warned to start reading it when you have plenty of time on your hands.

My only complaint was that I actually like the English soldier(villain), Blankenship, better than the hero. He was a gentleman throughout. He evens quotes poetry to her when he asks her to sleep with him! I did not think he deserved the end he received. Also I wonder if the ending leaves open a possible sequel.

Overall an enjoyable book. I enjoyed it more than the author's other novel Midwife of the Blue Ridge.

Excellent Read
By N. Slocum
The Tory Widow, the second book by Christine Blevins, is quite simply an excellent read. Following the story of a young, widowed, woman who is running a printing press in revolutionary New York. The book weaves a intriguing tale of adventure and romance in the most troubled of times.

In my opinion one of the most interesting themes in the book is that Anne and Jack. Although these two characters are pivotal in the fact that theirs is the central love story I found it refreshing that their story was not so cut and dry, as love rarely is. Personal goals complicate things, betrayal and misplaced loyalty scar the relationship and these elementals, while not always making the story a pretty one, definitely add substance to the overall message of the book.

when it comes down to it The Tory Widow is a supremely exciting read, the author on every page demonstrates a strong commitment to historical accuracy through what must have been months, if not years, of diligent research. The characters are flawed in most human of ways making it easy for readers to sympathize with. And for this new author ( Her first book being Midwife of the Blueridge) it is apparent that she is finding a truly enjoyable writing style and direction of her own, I cannot wait to see what she produces next.

The Tory Widow is a great summer read
and to the author; well done

From Publishers Weekly
An ingenious plot and sufficient flow of blood keep the pages flying in Harris's ( Sweet and Deadly ) third novel, as a series of killings patterned after celebrated murders is perpetrated on the small community of Lawrenceton, Ga. Twenty-eight-year-old Aurora (Roe) Teagarden, professional librarian, belongs to the Real Murders club, a group of 12 enthusiasts who gather monthly to study famous baffling or unsolved crimes. As a meeting is to begin, Roe discovers the massacred body of a club member. She recognizes the method of slaughter as imitating the very crime she was to address that night--suddenly her life as armchair sleuth assumes an eerie reality. The murderer continues to claim victims, each in the style of a different historical killer. Roe herself becomes a target, and also attracts two admirers, Robin Crusoe, a famed mystery writer new to Lawrenceton, and club member/detective Arthur Smith. Death seems to have infused new life into her waning social calendar, an irony not lost on this pensive character. Harris draws the guilty and the innocent into an engrossing tale while inventing a heroine as capable and potentially complex as P. D. James's Cordelia Gray.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Someone is killing the crime buffs of the Real Murders Society in Lawrenceton, Georgia. A librarian, Aurora Teagarden, sets out to catch the brutal murderer after fellow club members end up as victims. The uncanny resemblances to famous crimes challenge Roe and her two admirers, policeman Arthur Smith and mystery writer Robin Crusoe, to pursue the criminal. The lighthearted, witty handling of characters contrasts with the heightening suspense as Aurora seeks clues by searching past mysteries for the killer's identity--until she is caught in the sadistic web of terror herself. Clever pacing along with ample red herrings and judiciously placed clues keep Harris's story moving briskly. Let's hope for another fast-paced mystery featuring Aurora and her friends.

There are 4 kinds of Homicide: felonious, excusable, justifiable, and praiseworthy. - Ambrose Bierce
By Cherise Everhard
Aurora 'Roe' Teagarden leads a relatively normal and quiet life. She is her home town librarian and she manages the townhouses that she resides in and her mother owns. She doesn't date a lot and she knows everyone in her town.

The one thing that sets Roe apart from a lot of people in her town and the one thing she looks forward to is her monthly get together at the VFW hall. Roe is a member of a small group called Real Murders. She and a few others get together to discuss real murder cases, each one taking a turn to present a case. Sometimes the cases have been solved, sometimes they haven't. Whoever's turn it is that month studies up on their particular case and presents a lecture of sorts. The lecture then opens up to an open discussion.

The current murder case is Roe's to present and when she arrives at the hall she discovers a gory murder. When more murders happen, it is apparent a copy cat serial killer is on the loose targeting or framing the Real Murders group.

Roe and her band of buddies make an unusual and eclectic group of individuals that get wrapped up in murder cases. While outsiders find them ghoulish, the group actually isn't at all.

The characters that fill these pages are what I have come to expect from Charlaine Harris. She takes your ordinary, average, every day people and adds a decent dose of charm and a healthy heaping of eccentricities. Roe may lead a rather staid lifestyle on the surface, but she is anything but boring. I found myself chuckling quite a few times at the things that go through her head.

The mystery is exciting and kept me guessing... I was shocked at the ending and it was hard to discover that a Sherlock Holmes I will never be. I just never pick the right person! Enjoy!

All 6 published Teagarden books
By Arlene
I have to say that after reading all 8 Sookie Stackhouse books and Lily Bard, Shakespeare's series, I am very disappointed in this series. I made myself finish them just because I just knew they'd kick in at some point and meet my expectations. It never happened. I judge a book by my wanting to re-read the books over and over. I can't say this about this series. I went out on Harris' web sight and was disappointed to hear that she would not be writing any more Shakespeare mysteries. That's ok because the series ended very well. I was disapponted when she said never say never about another Teagarden possibility. Please save your precious time writing Stackhouse books and end the Teagarden!

Only when a man becomes this true self can he make himself ready for the woman who loves him and the family who needs him. Women need to learn to identify a man who lives up to God's design and to foster the spiritual growth of their men. With its inspiring and empowering message, Dare to Be a Man is essential reading for all men and the women who love them.

By Kattisa Moton
I have a better understanding about how a good man in Christ ought to be after viewing this book. A good man must know how to be disciplined. He can be charming, good-looking and fun to be with, but if he doesn't have discipline. He has the potential to disappoint you in the things that really matter in life. He must change his environment, relationships and influences in order to follow the will of God for his life.

Excellent
By Steven V. Burgess
Bishop Evans has written a book that is an excellent motivation for today's Christian man facing an intentionally demoralizing societal culture. The problem is that non-believers will, of course, criticize the message because of it's Christian basis. He provides personal and current examples of how biblical examples from the past can direct and assist men today. Most importantly, where he writes of putting on his own armor and rescuing one of his flock from a den of evil shows that Bishop Evans not only writes about it, he lives it.

Blessing
By A. Mirka
This Book was such a blessing to me. While reading it God was able to show me my faults in my relationship and help me realize that yes my fiance may have faults but that doesn't excuse my not obeying God's word. It's a true eye opener and very humbling. I began noticing the little things and now allow Holy Spirit to correct me in all instances. I truly understand now and am very humbled by the truth.

I think for those who are willing to change this will give you a sigh of relief. I think for those who are looking for an excuse and blame their significant other will find this humbling and rewarding. If you truly want something to help your marriage and heal it this would be great to start with.

God Bless.

From Publishers Weekly
In this best of the series to date, Aurora (Roe) Teagarden, the former librarian returned to her roots in Lawrenceton, Ga., marries Martin Bartell, the rich, secretive and charismatic businessman she met in Three Bedrooms, One Corpse (1994). For their home, Martin buys the house once occupied by T.C. Julius, his terminally ill wife Hope and their teenage daughter. Six years earlier, the Julius family had disappeared without a trace, leaving only Hope's mother in the garage apartment. Martin lets the apartment to an old Vietnam buddy, Shelby Youngblood, and his wife Angel, who seem suspiciously like bodyguards to Roe. As questions about Martin's past and present disturb her newfound happiness, Roe determines to solve the Julius family mystery, enlisting Angel's help. A vicious attack and a stunning discovery lead the two women to New Orleans and a dramatic set of answers to puzzles old and new. The author's brisk, upbeat style keeps tension simmering under the everyday surface, while Roe's inclination to girlish chatter (a trial in earlier works) is restrained.

From Library Journal
Aurora Teagarden, who gave up librarianship when she inherited money, marries the handsome businessman she met in Three Bedrooms, One Corpse (LJ 3/1/94). They settle down in his wedding gift to her: the so-called Julius house, named for the family who disappeared from it six years earlier. Aurora eventually discovers what really happened; unfortunately, she also uncovers a few unsavory things about her husband. Suspense sprouts from tiny seeds planted early on, and the tensions of a new marriage and an old mystery provide much fertilizer. Good reading, augmented by solid characterization and occasional humor.

Not as Good as Previous Books, But Still A Great Author!
By Silmarwen
The Julius House is the fourth book in the Aurora Teagarden series. Aurora "Roe" has finally recovered from her injuries incurred at the end of the last book and is happily engaged to Martin Bartell, her handsome, older, richer boyfriend. For her wedding gift, Martin buys her the Julius house, the perfect house for her. Many people think she is crazy for living there due to the sudden disappearance of the Julius family who used to live there. Roe doesn't worry about it in the slightest and concentrates on glorying in her happily engaged status. She loves being the bride instead of the bridesmaid and pushes any doubts about her soon-to-be-husband aside. When they return from their perfect honeymoon in England, Roe settles in to redecorate and get settled. She is surprised when Martin informs her that two of his friends are down on their luck and that they will be moving into the apartment over the garage. Still, Roe is in love and excited to meet some of Martin's friends and does her best to welcome them. She soon discovers, however, that they are really there to guard her. When pressured, Martin confesses that he is a gunrunner in South America and that he is always worried about retaliation. To take her mind off of this confession, Roe decides that she is going to find out what happened to the Julius family and drags her bodyguard along for the ride. She soon discovers that sometimes it is better to let secrets remain buried...
I admit that the whole Roe/Martin wedding was a little contrived, but Roe really has wanted to get married all of her life and is extremely flattered that such an attractive, wealthy gentleman would be in love with her. It was fun to see Roe's thought processes as she dealt with extreme changes and challenges in her new life. I quite enjoyed the whole Julius family subplot and, though the ending was a little bit too shocking, Roe's whole investigation was quite logical and shows how one determined person can often put clues together that other people missed. As with the her other books, Charlaine Harris offers the reader a host of interesting supporting characters, many amusing details about the mystery and a fun, fast read for those who enjoy this type of genre. I feel that Harris' other mystery series starring Lily Bard (Shakespeare set) is stronger and her Dead Until Dark series is cleverer, but anything that Harris writes is worth reading!

Book #4 in the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries
By K. Gilligan
"The Julius House" by Charlaine Harris is the fourth book in her series about Aurora Teagarden. (Follows Real Murders: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 1, A Bone To Pick: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Book 2 and Three Bedrooms, One Corpse: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery) Roe is now happily engaged to Martin Bartell, but nothing is as it seems. Martin has just gifted Roe with the old Julius house as a wedding present, and she is happily planning on moving them in. Depite its history (the Julius family mysteriously vanished years ago), she finds it enchanting. She even finds no problem with letting a couple of Martin's friends live on the property. That is, until she finds out that they're her bodyguards. Besides dealing with her husband, Roe decides she wants to figure out what happened to the Julius family.

I enjoyed this book as much as I did the earlier ones. It did take me a bit to warm to Martin, but I've decided that he's just what Roe needs. And unlike "Three Bedrooms, One Corpse", I did not solve the mystery before Roe! Everytime I thought I had figured it out, something new would be revealed, and I'd have to rethink my whole theory.

I fully recommend this series! Next is Dead Over Heels: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 5, followed by Fool And His Honey: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 6, Last Scene Alive (Aurora Teagarden Mysteries), and Poppy Done To Death: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 8.

Or if you'd like to try a different series by Charlaine Harris, check out the Lily Bard mysteries.(Shakespeare's Landlord (The First Lily Bard Mystery), "Shakespeare's Champion", Shakespeare's Christmas", "Shakespeare's Trollop", and Shakespeare's Counselor")

Or her new supernatural Southern Vampire Mysteries (Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Bk. 1), "Living Dead in Dallas", "Club Dead", "Dead to the World", "Dead as a Doornail", "Definitely Dead", and "All Together Dead")

The Vanished Family
By Bill Jordin
Julius House (1995) is the fourth mystery novel in the Aurora Teagarden series, following Three Bedrooms, One Corpse. In the previous volume, the killer cornered Roe, but she attacked him with an umbrella ferule. He pinned her on the floor and beat on her. She used her souvenir rock to smash him alongside the head.

In this novel, Aurora Teagarden was born and raised in the small town of Lawrenceton, Georgia, in the suburbs of Atlanta. She is now married to Martin Bartell. She has had some strange experiences in her life.

Martin Bartell is manager of the local Pan-Am Agra plant. Martin was born and raised in Corinth, Ohio, and served in combat as a Marine at the end of the Vietnam War.

Shelby Youngblood is an old friend of Martin from the war in Vietnam. He is married to Angel.

Angel Youngblood is a martial artist and stuntwoman. She is almost as tall as her husband and towers over Roe.

In this story, Roe and Martin are engaged. Martin buys the Julius House for Roe and she buys his family farm for him. She flies to Corinth, Ohio, by herself to acquire the property. She briefly meets Martin's ex-wife in Corinth.

Roe and Martin exchange deeds a few weeks before the wedding. Martin lets Roe handle the renovation of the Julius House. She starts buying household goods and hiring people to work on the house.

Shelby is coming to work at the Pan-Am Agra plant and will need a place to stay. Martin asks Roe if Shelby and Angel may use the apartment above the garage and she agrees. Then they take over the job of coordinating the renovation of the Julius House.

Of course, Roe is also attending showers and other bridal celebrations. She meets people that she hasn't seen for a long time. And they all have questions about the Julius House.

Roe is asked how she could possibly live in a house from which three people have vanished to never be seen again. Haturally she knows about the missing family, but she is not really concerned. The house seems too peaceful to have ghosts.

After the wedding and honeymoon, however, Roe starts investigating the disappearance. She and Angel measure dimensions inside and outside the house looking for hidden spaces, but find nothing except a china doll. Then Roe starts questioning the witnesses.

This tale has Roe digging up some strange information. Angel helps her in these investigations. She even saves Roe from a man with an axe.

Roe discovers that Martin has not told her everything before the marriage. She even quarrels with him. She still loves him, but she wonders if she is making a mistake.

This novel is more like a typical detective story than the others. In the next installment -- Dead Over Heels -- a body literally drops out of thin air. Read and enjoy!

Highly recommended for Harris fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of old murders, unexpected findings, and persistent women. For anyone unfamiliar with this series, the initial volume is Real Murders.

From Publishers Weekly
Spenser, the redoubtable Boston PI, struts his stuff in this 36th entry in the series, but may leave some readers wondering if his ethics will bear even casual examination. When Heidi Bradshaw hires Spenser to support her at her daughter's wedding on Tashtego Island in Buzzards Bay, Mass., an old nemesis of Spenser's, the Gray Man, who almost killed Spenser in Small Vices (1977), also shows up on the island. Spenser is unable to prevent the kidnapping of the bride or the deaths that attend it. Assisted by a cadre of familiar players, Spenser persists in trying to find the missing bride in spite of warnings from the Gray Man. The trademark banter and snappy dialogue may seem more forced than natural. Spenser displays his machismo in dealing with a muscle builder and his detective skills in figuring out the Gray Man's connections to the case. A troubling conclusion produces one resolution and the promise of further consequences in the next installment. (Oct.)

About the Author
Robert B. Parker was the author of more than fifty books. He died in January 2010.

From AudioFile
Parker's Boston-based PI, Spenser, is hired as a bodyguard for a socialite who is hosting her daughter's wedding on her private island. When the groom is murdered and the bride is kidnapped, Spenser is determined to get to the bottom of the suspicious circumstances--especially the appearance of the Gray Man. Joe Mantegna's characterization of Spenser is as rock-steady as Spenser's integrity. Mantegna IS Spenser: determined and erudite, equally capable of killing a foe and cooking a gourmet meal. The dialogue, sometimes lacking the concise perfection that is Parker's hallmark, is rescued by Mantegna's portrayals of the characters, Spenser himself, Susan (elegantly cultured but remarkably tolerant of Spenser's life-and-death world), and Hawk (ever stalwart and loyal). Thanks to Mantegna's skill, this audiobook is better than the print publication. N.M.C. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Gray Man, please deal with Susan!
By overeasy .
After 30 years, the Spenser novels may have reached their nadir. This isn't so much a book as it is an exercise in cutting and pasting boring, trivial and pedantic dialogue from earlier Spenser escapades. There is so much wrong with it that it's hard to know to begin....but how 'bout

- Spenser and Susan do not seem to have grown up on wit over all these years. I fully realize the books aren't moving along as swiftly as real time, yet time has indeed passed (as Spenser and Rita discuss, in another adolescent tete-a-tete) so there is some need for not only their relationship to have grown, but for their dialogue to resemble something even close to what real people might say in today's parlance. I still admire Parker's crisp, uncluttered sentences (though he is getting lazy with adverbs....) I just wish that WHAT they were saying didn't sound juvenile.

- Susan (as a character) is as thin as the scraps of food she eats. Does she have friends or interests other than fawning over her big hunk of a detective boyfriend? Not that I know of. At the end of the day (and after all these years) Parker has repeatedly broken the #1 rule of writing; "Show, don't tell." We are bombarded with reasons why Susan is great, thin, beautiful and brilliant, yet we never really see it.....

- This book in particular seems driven not by a writer with a "good yard" to tell, but by a lazy old fart with a deadline to meet and a marketing department which encouraged him to "put a little more violence up front."

- Other's have noted that Parker is now obsessively reusing characters. Personally, I'm fine meeting up with Healey, Belson and Quirk, along with Ty Bop and others in the Spenser ensemble...but what is driving me nuts is the recycling of character types, which have long been grist for his personal mill. You always have to have someone at a New England college and there's usually another "shrink" and some rich society types who are evil or clueless or both. Having worked in academia, Spenser "knows the type," but the problem is, he is now writing them as nothing but "types," not as real living, breathing characters....

- And that's the real problem. Spenser books have never really been about the story/plot. They were character studies with a great sense of glib humor and what we call "snarkiness" these days. But when the writing grows dry and you swear you've "read it all before," the book collapses. A good story can survive poor writing, but not the other way around...

Honestly, I hate to write all this, as I have been a fan for a very long time. But I've also read a lot more since then, and have found people who intrigue and delight me more. If you haven't read Henning Mankell, then put down the Parker books and get going. For until Susan moves to Alabama and starts a Bulimia clinic, I see no reason to return to Spenser's Boston....

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "NEEDS MORE HAWK... LESS SUSAN... AND A MORE BELIEVABLE PLOT"
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
As a devoted Robert B. Parker fan it is sad to say his Spenser books are becoming a staid cookie-cutter series with almost replaceable by the number scenes. The razor edge that Spenser was famous for is not quite as sharp... and perhaps dulled by his advancing middle age... as more and more literary time is spent with boring predictable time with Susan. Loyal readers know she takes mini-microscopic bites of whatever food she orders... in whatever restaurant they visit. We know that whatever clothes she wears... she is the most beautiful woman Spenser has ever seen... we know that if she says she'll be ready in five minutes... she'll be ready in thirty-five minutes. And even more depressing for readers is the non-stop double entendre sexual conversations between the two of them... that are actually boorishly embarrassing to any adult. (Could you imagine sitting next to them on a cross country flight listening to such sophomoric interaction?)

And then there's Hawk. Just one sentence from Hawk when he enters a scene and there is immediate hope and enthusiasm brewing in the reader's soul. In this installment he doesn't do much more than chauffeur Spenser around.

The storyline starts when Heidi Bradshaw an attractive rich and famous woman who built her wealth by marrying a number of rich men ambles into Spenser's office and hires him to be her male escort and provide a non-defined security at her daughter's wedding, that will be taking place on her private island, Tashtego. Spenser takes Susan along with him and can't even explain to himself... let alone... to Susan... what his security job entails. On the day of the wedding... arch enemy "THE-GRAY-MAN" shows up as a guest... with no explanation or deep *"detecting"* work by Spenser... and from there we get senseless mass killings... what appears to be a ransom situation... without any immediate ransom request being made... and of course Spenser can't let go of the case even though he is no longer being paid.

Even Spenser's usual quota of sharp-snappy-funny quips are cut down to a minimum, but here's a couple of good ones: "IF YOU'RE GOING TO PRACTICE NEPOTISM, YOU MAY AS WELL KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY." And "SHE WAS CARRYING A PURSE THAT WOULD WORK AS A HAMMOCK FOR PYGMIES." And "ACCORDING TO RULE 4 IN SPENSER'S DETECTIVE FOR DUMMIES, IF YOU AREN'T GETTING ANYWHERE AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, GO ANNOY SOMEBODY." The one great flash of former Parker street poetry occurred when he described the reverence that Ty-Bop a mob bosses killer had for Hawk: "HE WOULD KILL ANYTHING THAT TONY POINTED HIM TOWARD. BUT THAT ASIDE, HE ALWAYS SEEMED TO ADMIRE HAWK. HE NEVER SAID ANYTHING, BUT HE WATCHED HIM ALL THE TIME, THE WAY A SCHOOLYARD PLAYER WOULD WATCH MICHAEL JORDAN."

My suggestion for a future Spenser installment would be for Spenser to breakup with Susan, and then for Spenser, Hawk, and maybe one other respected "shooter" that Spenser calls on in time of need... go away to a mountain cabin to bond and unwind... and in the midst of booze and steaks... and sharing old stories... the cabin is surrounded by a group of bad guys whose lives Spenser and Hawk had made miserable in the past... and the boys have to fight to the death to survive.

This would be a lot more entertaining than listening to double entendre chit-chat while watching Susan take microscopic bites of her lettuce.
