From America’s #1 bestselling crime writers comes the extraordinary new Kay Scarpetta novel.

Leaving behind her private forensic pathology practice in Charleston, South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta accepts an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured man on Bellevue Hospital’s psychiatric prison ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and when she literally has her gloved hands on him, he begins to talk—and the story he has to tell turns out to be one of the most bizarre she has ever heard.

The injuries, he says, were sustained in the course of a murder . . . that he did not commit. Is Bane a criminally insane stalker who has fixed on Scarpetta? Or is his paranoid tale true, and it is he who is being spied on, followed and stalked by the actual killer? The one thing Scarpetta knows for certain is that a woman has been tortured and murdered—and more violent deaths will follow. Gradually, an inexplicable and horrifying truth emerges: Whoever is committing the crimes knows where his prey is at all times. Is it a person, a government? And what is the connection between the victims?

In the days that follow, Scarpetta; her forensic psychologist husband, Benton Wesley; and her niece, Lucy, who has recently formed her own forensic computer investigation firm in New York, will undertake a harrowing chase through cyberspace and the all-too-real streets of the city—an odyssey that will take them at once to places they never knew, and much, much too close to home.

Throughout, Cornwell delivers shocking twists and turns, and the kind of cutting-edge technology that only she can provide. Once again, she proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of bestseller Cornwell's plodding 16th thriller to feature Dr. Kay Scarpetta (after Book of the Dead), the forensic pathologist—who recently relocated to Belmont, Mass., with her forensic psychologist husband—is called to Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital for reasons that don't become clear until she gets there. Oscar Bane, who voluntarily committed himself to Bellevue while denying he brutally murdered his girlfriend, refuses to speak to anyone except the high-profile Scarpetta. Bane, Scarpetta discovers, is obsessed with her. Meanwhile, someone masquerading as Scarpetta is lurking in cyberspace and supplying an online gossip site with dirty secrets about the doctor. For help on the murder case, Scarpetta turns to her computer whiz niece and a macho former colleague whose shocking actions in Book of the Dead severely damaged his relationship with Scarpetta. With a plot full of holes and frustrating red herrings, this entry falls short of the high standard set by earlier volumes in this iconic series. (Dec.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Critics agreed that readers familiar with Cornwell's series will find Scarpetta a weak addition; novice audiences will certainly want to skip over this one and start with Postmortem (1990), Cornwell's award-winning debut. Although Scarpetta is not one of the better entries to date, the thriller contains Cornwell's meticulous attention to detail (from autopsies to investigations) and edge-of-your-seat plotting. However, reviewers cited too much backstory, overly complex twists, and only mediocre characterization. The Rocky Mountain Newseven accused Scarpetta of becoming "something of a cipher," while the Guardianfound nothing to like at all. The bright spot? A thrilling, unpredictable ending.

From Booklist
Twenty years after launching the Kay Scarpetta series, Cornwell returns to form (the last few entries have been disappointing) in this thoroughly contemporary, high-impact outing. Though she lives and works in South Carolina, medical examiner Scarpetta is asked for by name by a man being accused of murder in Manhattan. He says he won’t let anyone else examine him for DNA evidence except Dr. Scarpetta, who is nationally known after making numerous appearances on CNN. Normally Scarpetta wouldn’t abide such an odd request, but her forensic psychologist husband, Benton Wesley, convinces her after evaluating the accused himself. Despite having the victim’s DNA all over him, Oscar Bane insists he did not commit the murder and insists to Scarpetta and to anyone else who will listen that he is being electronically monitored by someone or something and implores them to watch their backs. Initially, Bane seems to be just another paranoid criminal, but evidence emerges to show he just might be on to something. All the while, Scarpetta herself deals with electronic scrutiny of a sort when an anonymous online gossip columnist reveals horrible secrets from her past. Can she convince her colleagues to listen to Bane’s warnings before it’s too late? The blend of forensic investigation and high-tech intrigue will please Scarpetta’s legions of fans. --Mary Frances Wilkens

Guilty until Proven Innocent
By R. Ron
A teen comes home to find his mom murdered. The police convince him after 30 hours without food or sleep that he "blacked out" and did it. But he doesn't remember. He signs a confession.Found guilty. Reads like a novel, but it's all true. The dialogue in this book is from the actural interogation tapes and interviews with the accused or first hand participants. Sounds like something that may happen in a good old boy area. Not true. The scene is rural northwestern Connecticut.
I read "Death in Canaan" and saw that movie years ago. This book, by a renouned reporter and journalist who happens to live in the area really makes it real. It could happen to you, or your teenager.

Riveting case that still happens today
By Picardfan007
I always wanted to know the specifics of this case. The truth was that there was no physical evidence to link Peter Reily to this crime. Yet the Police still arrested him. The author goes on to state that this case was a textbook one on false confession. When you read the transcript of the questioning and the tactics; you'll see that this is true.

The sad fact is that are many cases like this one that never get attention. This author was one of the founders of DNA testing. This book in paticular was one I could not put down. What I found so compelling was that the police never investigated other leads. There were several others mentioned in this book that were never followed to this day.

*Starred Review* While Chloe Hobbs, a half-human sorceress-in-training who owns the popular yarn shop, Sticks and Strings, and the love of her life, the all-too-human chief of police, Luke MacKenzie, are off fighting the forces of evil to protect his daughter’s soul, the unthinkable happens. The town of Sugar Maple, Vermont, disappears—animals, people, buildings, roads: everything. Not only do Chloe and Luke have to figure out how this could be. They also have to engage in another battle to the death with supernatural forces. And they have to face all of this when they haven’t even begun to recover from the previous clash. The third book, following Casting Spells (2008) and Laced with Magic (2009), in Bretton’s decidedly dark saga of Sugar Maple, a place where vampires, trolls, shapeshifters, and werewolves live in peace, is an exciting conclusion to her very clever trilogy. Readers will be on the edge of their seats as Chloe and Luke risk everything to protect the little town they love. --Shelley Mosley

The third installment in the Sugar Maple chronicles does not fail to please.
By Barbara
The third installment in the Sugar Maple chronicles does not fail to please. Sugar Maple disappears! and forces Chloe, Luke, Janice & Penelope to Salem to look for answers. We learn a lot about the history of the people of Sugar Maple, why they left Salem & who stayed behind. Chloe also learns more about her family and about herself.

Although this could have easily been the last in the series, Bretton leaves us with a teaser that can not be the end :)

Overall, I enjoyed this installment. There were a few places where the story dragged and then others where things moved so fast I had to slow down my reading to take it all in. However, if you enjoyed the first two books in this series, you should certainly enjoy this one.

Spun by Sorcery is a cute novel with lots of fluff
By Bookaholics Reviewer
Spun by Sorcery by Barbara Bretton
Paranormal Romance- Nov. 2nd, 2010
3 1/2 stars

Spun by Sorcery is a light-hearted mystery with magical elements in it.

Chloe Hobbs is half-human and half-sorcerer. Luke McKenzie is completely human, the local law, and her lover. They have won the battle against the evil Isadora for the township of Sugar Maple. To the victor go the spoils of a safe home. Except their home Sugar Maple has vanished. They can't enter the town's perimeter without running into a barrier. Chloe believes it is her fault. She thinks a magical spell backfired when she banished Isadora. But It can be fixed...right? Her trusty Book of Spells will hopefully have an answer. Except that when she tries to call it, the book doesn't come. It is as lost as the town is.
In the end, Chloe must decide which is more important to her; Sugar Maple or the one and only love of her life.
Spun by Sorcery is a cute novel with lots of fluff. Ms. Bretton uses simple words and not many details. It is a fun and fast read that gives you a happy ending. Even when they are facing possible death, there is a comic and ironic feel to author's style in writing.

Sadly, the characters are bit flat and two-dimensional. When one event happens, there is enough foreshadowing that the reader knows what will happen next. There aren't many surprises and although I enjoyed reading it, I could have put it down many times. The author also makes many references to her previous book. So while it can be easily read alone it would be more enjoyable having read her prior book, too

Thirtysomething Aurora "Roe" Teagarden is a widow who lives in a small southern town where she works very part-time in the library. It's the sort of place where everyone seems to be divorced from everyone else. Roe finds her stepbrother's wife, Poppy, murdered, and the complicated extramarital escapades of both Poppy and Poppy's husband unfold in an unpleasant fashion throughout the tale. Meanwhile, Roe's teenage half-brother has hitchhiked across the country to Roe to escape his parents' wrangling; Roe's mystery-writer boyfriend, Robin, is bringing his mom to meet her over Thanksgiving; and more and more people turn out to have had reason to wish Poppy dead. Roe is a genuine steel magnolia: even when she suffers from terminal second-guessing of herself, she knows what's proper and what a lady would do--and, mostly, she does it. Entertaining fare, but very different from Harris' darker Lily Bard series. GraceAnne DeCandido

A terrific cozy
By A Customer
Lawrenceton, Georgia librarian Aurora Teagarden is adjusting to widowhood just fine now that the worst of her grief is over. She is romantically involved with Robin Crusoe and is now a member of the Uppity Women, a prestigious group of females involved with literacy, and other social and political matters. It is by invitation only and Aurora is delighted that her stepsister-in-law Poppy is going to be inducted into the group.
She is positively mortified when Poppy doesn't show up to the meeting and rushes over to her home to lecture her, but instead finds her murdered body on the Kitchen floor. Poppy had many secrets and Aurora's family is trying to cope with the gossip and scandal. Roe is happy to find that her half brother Phillip is going to stay with her a while even though that puts more stress on her. While his presence takes her mind off the tragedy temporarily, she is pulled into the murder investigation by circumstances beyond her control and almost gets killed in the process.
Charlaine Harris has taken her heroine in a completely different direction and readers will be happy to see the protagonist find the double dose of happiness she so richly deserves. There is a lot of action in this delightful cozy, and not all of it is directed at solving the homicide. Roe gets a chance to become reacquainted with the brother she was forbidden to see for some time and helps her in-laws and her mother cope with a loved one's death. POPPY DONE TO DEATH is a terrific cozy, one readers will want to put on their keeper shelves.

Is Roe Running Out of Steam?
By Sires
If anyone seriously thinks that Harris writes cozy mysteries then they are not paying attention when they read. The author who writes the edgy Lily Bard mysteries and the Sookie Stackhouse stories, has never been one to allow her characters more than time to catch their breath between disasters. Whether it was the death involved with the true crime group she was a member of in the first mystery to her subsequent detective efforts, Aurora has lost friends, neighbors and enemies to the grim reaper. Harris never lets the reader assume that there is a Happily Ever After ending out there. Good things are balanced with bad.
In this case Aurora loses an old friend and a new one, learns things about the murdered person and her family she would just as soon not know and there are still a lot of loose strings after the murderer is revealed to fuel the next book.
I enjoyed the characters and the writing but it almost seems that the mystery was an afterthought. I guessed who the murdered was on first introduction (off stage). Harris gave away the important clues with the very nonchalant air with which she introduces them. The denoument was almost anticlimatic. The death in this case seemed to be more a peg on which to hang the characters and events than the reason for the existence of the book.
Not bad, but she's done (and hopefully will do) better.

A series to fill the Sookie-void
By Alpha Reader
Once again Charlaine has a thoroughly ordinary female protagonist repeatedly thrown into extraordinary circumstances. Aurora is perhaps the most outwardly hum-drum of all of Charlaine's protagonists; she is a librarian, complete with modest cardigans and horn-rimmed glasses. But don't let appearances (or occupation) fool you. Aurora is just as interesting and lovable as Charlaine's other leading ladies, maybe even more so because she is aware and makes fun of her outwardly plain-Jane appearances. Like Lily, Sookie and Harper, Aurora is an appealing protagonist because despite self-doubt, when push-comes-to-shove Aurora becomes a brave and ballsy heroine.

There is a lot of suspended belief in the Aurora series - throughout 8 books we are expected to believe that Aurora just keeps stumbling and unwittingly becoming involved in all the murders around town. But because Charlaine beautifully incorporates the bizarre with the mundane of Aurora's everyday life, and because she constantly makes a joke of the coincidences, you really don't mind the improbability inherent in the series.

`Aurora' is a fascinating series if you're coming to them after reading Harris's `Sookie Stackhouse' books. Aurora is surprisingly similar to Sookie; both are women whom, at the start of their respective series, are really unaware of their femininity and have lived fairly sheltered lives. Sookie has been a loner because of her telepathic `handy-cap', and Aurora because of low self-confidence and a focus on her work. Throughout their series both Aurora and Sookie are put through trials and tribulations that force them to come out of their shells and measure their mettle. But perhaps the ladies biggest connection lies in their romantic lives. As you compare both series you can pinpoint certain consistencies between the romantic entanglements. In both series Charlaine prefers multiple possible partners for her leading ladies, and enjoys keeping readers guessing as to whom they will ultimately end up with. In the `Aurora' and `Sookie' books Charlaine also puts her heroines through the romantic ringer - be warned, there are up's and down's that will tug at your heartstrings as you live vicariously through Aurora.

Unlike Sookie, Aurora has a tight family unit. This is really Charlaine's only series that explores family dynamics and it is refreshing to read Charlaine's funny take on family matters.

Once again, the `Aurora' books are definitely murder-mystery. Charlaine has a very devious mind when it comes to writing crime, and it is a tricky pleasure to try and figure out the `whodunnit' along with Aurora. But `Sookie Stackhouse' fans should once again be warned that there is no element of urban fantasy in Charlaine's debut series.

With a whopping 8 books in the series, Charlaine Harris has said in interviews that she has more ideas for Aurora Teagarden, but can't see herself finding the time between Sookie books to pen a 9th novel. This is a shame. The eighth `Aurora' book (`Poppy done to Death') did have a certain open-endedness to it - not so that it frustrates and leaves readers hanging, but just enough that you'll wish Charlaine would continue with the series.

I don't love the `Aurora Teagarden' books as much as Harris's `Lily Bard', `Sookie Stackhouse' or `Harper Connelly' series'. But I do love them. I love Aurora, I love her leading men and I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves Charlaine's writing and a good murder-mystery.

Dave Barry's History of the Millennium (So Far), by Dave Barry

A brilliantly funny look at the tumultuous recent past from the Pulitzer Prize?winning humorist.

Remember when everything was going to go to hell when Y2K struck?

That didn?t happen. Right?

But what did happen? To provide a little perspective on a really messed-up millennium (so far), the one and only Dave Barry slips into his historian?s robe (it?s plush terrycloth) and revisits the defining moments in our country?s recent history?from the Bush years to?jeez, it?s still the Bush years! As an added bonus, Barry quickly?we?re busy here?tosses in the complete history of the last millennium, covering crucial turning points such as the invention of the pizza by Leonardo da Vinci and the computer by Charles Babbage (who died in 1871 still waiting to talk to tech support).

Fellow Americans, the time has come to bone up with Barry as he puts the hysterical in history.

Although Barry retired his column in 2004, he continues to examine current events with his annual Year in Review surveys, and the ones he wrote between 2000 and 2006 are collected here. He opens with a 33-page outline of history (from 1000 to 1999) in which we learn that the first book Gutenberg mass produced in 1455 was Codpieces of Passion by Danielle Steel, and that computer pioneer Charles Babbage died in 1871, still waiting to talk to someone from Technical Support. In 2002, airline industry losses prompted America West, in a cost-cutting measure, to eliminate the cockpit minibar 2003: Jayson Blair, leaving the New York Times thoroughly disgraced, is forced to accept a six-figure book contract 2004: Abu Ghraib photos revealed soldiers repeatedly forcing prisoners to look at the video of Janet Jackson's right nipple 2006: Osama bin Laden released another audiotape, for the first time making it downloadable from iTunes. As a time line of humor, some of Barry's jokes were probably funnier the year they were written, but it's still a breezy and entertaining read. The 32 clever cartoon illustrations brighten the book's pages. (Sept. 17)

Loved it. But again made the mistake of reading it while waiting for my flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. I laughed so much I was afraid they would not allow me to board the plane for security reasons. A mad old lady on a 15-hour flight is a threat to other passengers...

Mediocre
By Patrick M. Carroll
Certainly not the best that Dave Barry has to offer. The best part of the whole book is when he reviews the previous milllennium. A few laughs, a handful of chuckles, and plenty of shrugged shoulders.

Typically amusing Dave Barry book!
By Mac McCarthy
THis is a collection of Dave Barry's end-of-year roundup stories for his Florida newspaper. It's especially amusing if you remember (vaguely) most of the events he mocks, teases, winks at, and satirizes in classic Dave Barry ways. I found it very amusing and read thru it in no time. Like eating sherbert.

Cozy Procedural
By Walter P. Sheppard
"The Treacherous Teddy" is about the murder of a farmer with a hunting arrow just as a teddy bear show is about to open. I won't say more so that none of the book's delights are given away.

On the surface, being able to combine the characteristics of traditional "cozy" and "police procedural" mysteries in the same book seems unlikely, but John Lamb has now done it with great success in five "Bear Collector's Mysteries." The "cozy" element is mostly in making and collecting teddy bears by the narrator and his wife, and the "police procedural" element is in solving the crime. Lamb knows both fields personally: he and his wife collect artist teddy bears, and he was a homicide detective for many years in San Diego County, California. He has translated his experiences into highly readable and entertaining novels.

Lamb's ability to write gripping action sequences is shown on his website in the excerpt from his debut novel, "Echoes of the Lost Order," but I was somewhat disappointed in the novel as a whole. The problems were just those of a beginning writer. It has since been rewarding to follow Lamb's development as a writer through the five "Bear Collector" books. His first few pages are no longer loaded with somewhat clunky exposition. Exposition is still there, of course, but now it's integrated into the narrative and the action gets going promptly. The books are paced better, and Lamb's prose style has grown both smoother and less diffuse. He has really "hit his stride" as a plotter and writer of engaging and absorbing mysteries, the kind that keep you reading past your bus stop or bedtime because you are caught up in the story and because of the easy flow of the writing.

He also has a joyful knack for truly outrageous puns.

"When all else fails, hug your teddy." Lamb quotes that bit of arctophile advice in "The Treacherous Teddy." His "Bear Collector" fans will need to take it if the note on his website that he is now working on "a new and truly unique murder mystery series" means that there will be no more books about Brad and Ashleigh Lyon. I may hug a teddy, but I respect Lamb's decision if he feels that he has done all he can with the teddy bear milieu. The teddy bear element drew my attention to his books in the beginning because my wife and I also collect artist teddy bears, but it is his characters and his ability to tell a good story that keeps me reading what he writes. I will certainly look for his next book with eager anticipation, whatever the milieu.

I truly enjoy John J. Lamb's Bear Collector's series
By Marge
Well, yes, at the ripe old age of 65 I do still, yet, and occasionally collect a teddy bear if it strikes my fancy...so that was what first drew me to the book. I have read the entire series, and have enjoyed following the characters as they develop and solve their crimes. I believe Mr. Lamb was, at one time, an officer of the law and it reflects in his writing...his fictional detective work and police relationships have a much more realistic sense than most. All in all, Mr. Lanb's books are a dependable, good read with interesting and well drawn out characters, and good mysteries to solve. Mr. Lamb also provides good references for collectors who are interested in exploring bear collecting further in the real world.

I really enjoy the Teddy mysteries. When the book arrived I put aside the one I was reading and immediately started this one. I am almost finished reading it and will probably read the whole series again.

Cross Lassie with E.T., add a touch of The Wolfen and a dash of The Godfather, and you get a sense of some of the ingredients in this supernatural thriller, which should move Koontz ( Strangers a notch closer to Stephen King's high-rent district. When Travis Cornell, Koontz's appealing hero, encounters a stray dog while hiking, he quickly realizes that the animal is most unusual and that something terrifying is stalking them both. The encounter with the dog is the beginning of a tightly woven plot involving genetic manipulation that has created two extraordinary animals; one is the dog, named Einstein, the other is a murderous hybrid called "The Outsider." Hunted down by both the government and a professional killer who has learned the secret of the animals, Travis, Einstein and Nora Devon, a lonely woman befriended by man and canine, attempt to escape their pursuers all the while knowing that a confrontation with The Outsider is inevitable. Though the climax packs a little less wallop than it deserves, this is the sort of thoroughly frightening and entertaining tale that has its readers listening for noises in the night. 100,000 first printing; 100,000 ad/promo; Liteary Guild main selection.

YA A book that incorporates elements of both the horror tale and the action thriller, and the result is an intriguing and enjoyable novel. Watchers is a retelling of the Frankenstein theme with a twist: two creatures, quite different from each other, roam the land. Two animals who are unlike any other animals as a result of DNA research escape from a top-secret laboratory. One is divinely inspiring, engendering love and caring. The other is a hellish nightmare that leaves unspeakable slaughter in its wake. The two creatures and a supporting cast of charactersa government agent, a hired killer, a decent recluse, and a lonely womanare inevitably brought together in a climactic and satisfying showdown. While the plot developments occasionally seem a bit forcedthis is one book that could actually have profited by some extra lengththe shortcomings are minor. Watchers is a satisfying example of good storytelling. Karl Penny, Houston Public Library

From Library Journal
When the Russians sabotage a genetic research project in California, two mutated creatures escape from the lab. One is a golden retriever with high enough intelligence to think and communicate with humans; the other is the Outsider, a vicious monster created from a baboon and bred to kill. Both the man who befriends and adopts the dog and his new bride find themselves stalked by government agents anxious to find the dog, a particularly repulsive Mafia hit man intent on stealing him, and the Outsider, with whom the dog is linked telepathically. Koontz ( Strangers ) is truly a master at creating suspense, and his opening and closing scenes are full of delicious tension. Only in the middle does the chase seem a bit long. Dangerous! May Be Addictive!
By sweetmolly
This is Dean Koontz at his finest. The man is first and foremost a storyteller par excellence, and "Watchers" reels you in just-like-that---zip! All of his favorite elements are in play: the hulking government-sponsored lab, the super dog, the pathetic monster, the burnt out protagonist and redemption. It may be a formula, but then so is the chef's masterpiece. When it's done right, it's a work of art. The dialogue is Koontzian stiff (the dog has the best lines), but with such strong characterizations, it is but of small moment.
Travis Connell is a man in bleak despair. He has lost everyone who meant anything to him and is convinced he is a jinx. With great serendipity he meets an extraordinary golden retriever and one of life's misfits, Nora Devon. The dog and Travis meet and mutually support one another in a wilderness area where something unknown is threatening them. They in turn meet the sheltered, totally repressed Nora and save her from a sexual predator who is insinuating himself into her life. The three are inexorably drawn to one another and each almost miraculously strengthens the others.
The story shifts among the trio, a workaholic NSA agent, and a particularly repellent professional hit man with a God complex. The hit man Vince is wonderfully rendered and, unfortunately for the reader, we understand all too well his skewed logic. Lemuel Johnson, the NSA agent, has too much personal baggage and sometimes retards the story. The golden retriever, subsequently named Einstein, is a perfect realization of a dog that has been genetically engineered for high intelligence. He thinks, he reasons, he communicates (no, he can't talk, thank God!), but he remains very much a dog with all the traits we human dog lovers treasure. Somehow the author keeps him from ever being cute or a circus wonder; he has dignity and gravitas.
This is a great, fast read that will leave you with something to think about and makes the reader face some moral ambiguities. Mr. Koontz flawlessly pushes all our buttons in this, possibly his best, novel.

The Best You Can Get
By Donald Brickeen
This is the first novel I ever read written by Koontz, and to this day I must confess that it is still my favorite. Indeed, it may very well be my favorite book of all time.
The strength of the story, of course, lies with "Einstein", and his interaction with the other characters in the story. I'm not a dog lover by any stretch of the imagination, but I fell for this dog deeply. Koontz does a brilliant job of describing Einstein's feelings (read the book and this statment will make more sense, I assure you), so as you begin to view the dog as a human. It happens so gradually through the novel that you don't even realize it till it's too late.
The main theme of this book is LOYALTY. Not just with Einstein and the other characters, but more so with the humans he comes into contact with. I'm not sure if Koontz is a dog lover or not, but he sure made one out of me!
I have read this book more times than I care to mention, and each time I am still filled with the same emotions at the same incerpts on the same pages...This novel is indeed THAT powerful. Regardless of whether you enjoy pets or not, do yourself a favor, and read this novel.

A dazzling combination of suspense, horror, and romance
By Duaa Anwar
You have not read a book until you have read Watchers by Dean Koontz. Why? I will try to be brief.. no book can ever match the powerful beginning of this novel. It was gripping, thrilling, from page 3. There is a lot of description, but Dean has a way of making every description useful and enjoyoyable - unlike some authors who bore you to death with totally irrelevant paragraphs. His characters may be extreme in some ways, nevertheless, they were painted into realistic people that can indeed exist in real life. For the first few chapters.. you will be intrigued at how different incidents can be connected.. then slowly and with a lot of mystery, the story begins to connect and become clearer.
Travis, Nora, Einstein, and Vince are the main characters in the book. Dean allows you to see the world from their eyes, which can be fascinating because they are fascinating characters!
Einstein, the dog, will capture your heart. Even the evil presence in the story will have you sympathize with it. The plot is structured so well that there is no spot where the action slows down. Given the long time within which the story takes place, this novel is very fast paced and will leave you at the edge of your seat.
And I have to confess that Koontz does not leave you unsatisfied or frustrated at any point. The characters will ask the questions that you have in your mind, and the action will keep you fully aware of the current situation. The suspense will leave you shuddering, and the romance will warm your heart. This is a story that is full of emotion.. where there is a lesson at the end for mankind. It will stay in my heart to the end of my life.

Sweetest Little Sin by Christine Wells
By A. Schreiner
The Marquis of Jardine has many secrets, of course being a secret agent lends to his covert nature. He doesn't necessarily work for the British Government, he likes to be on his own, but he has worked closely with many official agents over the years. One of his secrets is that he is in love with Lady Louisa Brooke. They have quite a history together, and she definitely shares his affection, but to keep her safe, something Jardine will do at all costs, he finds he has to push her away. Louisa is desperately in love with Jardine, and although she wears a brave face, she is crumbling on the inside.

Louisa is considered a spinster by society, and although she went through a time where her family had no money, her family now bears a wealthy title and they are invited into the homes of the elite ton. Louisa could care less about the frivolity associated with these people, but to bear the unimaginable pain that Jardine causes her when he kicks her out of his life, she accepts as many invitations as possible to keep her mind occupied.
Louisa and Jardine have something in common, although they don't know it. Faulkner, a secret agent whom Louisa helped briefly recently, wants Louisa to do one small task - get invited to Radleigh's house party. Faulkner is convinced Radleigh has a list of secret agents he is trying to sell and that could be disastrous to the country. If Louisa can get an invite, she will be able to bring a female companion, although this companion will be very much a spy herself. Louisa is up for the house party, and for the part where she pretends to be in love with Radleigh - anything to get her mind off Jardine. She not only gets invited to the house party, but Radleigh is so taken with her, an engagement develops. When word of this returns to Jardine - he becomes livid. The thought of Louisa in danger, and the thought of Radleigh's hands on the woman he loves, almost sets him over the edge.

Jardine also knows Radleigh has the list and has his own agenda for wanting to get his hands on it. When Jardine and Louisa arrive at the house party, they are both after the same mission, they are both in love with each other, but there are so many secrets flying around, there is much investigating before all can come to the forefront

I'm not sure if I agree with the "sweetest" part of Sweetest Little Sin. While I very much enjoyed this book, I wouldn't call our hero Jardine nor our heroine, Louisa sweet. Maybe intense, aggressive, or sordid. The concept that these two people love each other so much, yet can not be together for fear of losing their lives had my anxiety in full swing by page fifteen. Jardine is forced to push Louisa out of his life, knowing the bad guys would love to get their hands on anything Jardine holds dear. Louisa is crushed, but not necessarily sulky. She is very strong and smart and would rather get angry than mope about in tears. When these two do come together it is explosive. This is not a mushy romance, folks. This is - if you touch my woman I will slowly rip you to shreds kind of romance. Jardine is alpha, intense, hard core, and Louisa wants it all. Heck, I want him too! He is so over the top possessive of her, yet always has to look at her from afar.

I think the mystery plays out well and I was surprised a couple of times at the end by some turn of events. The one thing that bothered me a bit as I read is at points it felt like the reader is missing out on a big part of Jardine and Louisa's back story. I do not know if these characters make an appearance in her previous book, Wicked Little Game. I don't know if the lack of their history together is part of the mystery of the book, but I think I would have benefitted from knowing more about the circumstances that bring these two together to begin with.

Sweetest Little Sin captured my attention from the beginning and I really enjoyed both Jardine and Louisa. I will definitely be checking out Christine Wells again.

Lovin' Me Some Jardine!
By VampFanGirl
My Review:

Lady Louisa Brooke has waited eight long excruciating years for the Marquis of Jardine to renounce his life-endangering job at England's Home Office and finally provide her with the marriage and family he once vowed. Now, after time has successfully completed its erosion of her once formidable strength to grasp tightly to Jardine's promises, Louisa only wishes to be rid of him and what ultimately proved to be a pack of lies, all of which she'd foolishly built her life around. Having forsaken years that she'll never get back, Louisa refuses to wait a moment longer to start living and when the Home Office comes knocking on her door, she answers it with relish.

Jardine has loved and feared for Louisa from the first moment he was felled by her warrior-woman eyes. Knowing that his enemies wouldn't think twice before abducting Louisa if their passion for one another became public, Jardine instead makes promises of forever then promptly leaves resulting in eight years of cat and mouse. While he hates that he's had to hurt her, Jardine's beastly possessive nature refuses to let her find happiness with another. Louisa is his and always will be. But when a deadly enemy proves to be closer now more than ever, Jardine knows that he must drive Louisa away once and for all or risk loosing her in the worst way. He must put an end to their liaison as well as her dreams for he'd rather Louisa be vibrantly alive than dead. However, he never dreamed that she'd promptly set her cap on one Mr. Radleigh; a man that Jardine suspects of much more than mere treason but more importantly, Radleigh could lead him to an even more fearsome enemy whose motive is a dark and personal revenge.

While Radleigh reeks of a perverse evil making Louisa shiver internally with fear, she gathers strength from finally having found a much needed purpose with the Home Office. No matter that their requirement of Louisa is trivial and she longs for more responsibility, she'll not shirk her duty and instead surpasses their demands by agreeing to marry Radleigh in order to secure an invitation to his country estate. The engagement wouldn't have been her choice but to decline would have proven her disinterest and therefore negated her chance for the Home Office's required invitation. What proves to be the most difficult with regards to Louisa's mission, however, is that she absolutely must not disclose a single shred of information to anyone. When Jardine makes a predictably arrogant attempt to curtail Louisa's engagement, she at first thrills in her heart that he may be jealous, but he soon smashes that hopeful notion. He didn't lie when he told he no longer loved her. Instead Jardine thinks her inept which only makes Louisa's smearing of his face within her pending nuptials all the more satisfying - sham wedding or not.

Frightened by the strange coincidence of Louisa becoming engaged to Radleigh, Jardine smells something foul afoot and gains his own invitation to the Radleigh country estate. Once there Jardine plans to no only protect Louisa but to find a very important list - one that documents the identities of each and every agent working or having worked for the Home Office. Radleigh plans on selling the list to the highest bidder but Jardine has every intention of seizing it for himself to use as bait for another dastardly enemy carrying a personal vendetta. Its the perfect opportunity for Jardine to wipe clean the danger that has stalked him relentlessly resulting in the infernal need to hide his love for Louisa. In the meantime, Jardine stalks Louisa as he tries to unveil the secret for her being with Radleigh. She's too smart to not notice Radleigh's radiating evil. Rather she's at the estate for another purpose and Jardine will go to any length to discover what that purpose is.

No sooner does Louisa arrive at Radleigh's estate when she realizes she's in way over her head. With her trust in Jardine having been obliterated, it's impossible for Louisa to disclose her reasons for being engaged to the nefarious Radleigh. With no one else privy to the mission, it leaves Louisa no choice but to obtain the list of agents Radleigh's hiding on her own - her brother's and Jardine's life may depend on it. Dogged by Jardine at every turn, Louisa does her best to search the estate for the list but to no avail. When friends soon begin to turn foe, Louisa is struck with the realization that everything comes down to her winning Jardine's heart once and for all. Together they just might make it out of this rancid entanglement alive but apart, they'll forever forfeit their right to love.

My Thoughts:

SWEETEST LITTLE SIN is sweet non-stop action. Nary a pause for breath between heartbreak, betrayal, and death, SLS certainly doesn't bore but its also not my favorite by Christine Wells. While I predicted Jardine to be deeply embedded within the spy element of the Home Office, I was a bit disappointed at the extent with which Wells' took it. The spy-thriller element saturates the novel beyond what I would have liked but it was nonetheless entertaining. My real hope, however, was for a central character driven plot rather then espionage but Jardine still stole the show.

A devilishly dark and dangerously magnetic hero, Jardine encapsulates all that and more. Having no real morals, no regret and no recompense for what his life has become as an agent, he is what he is and doesn't ever apologize for it. Why would we want him to? There's only one person that can crack Jardine's rigid control and that's Louisa. A force to be reckoned with in her own right, Louisa is my kind of heroine. She's skilled in horsemanship and weaponry as apposed to the pianoforte and water colors. She's smart with a biting wit and like Jardine, she's unapologetic for who she is. Apart the two are incredibly lonely and a bitter half of themselves and its only with each other that they become complete. It truly is a wonderful hero and heroine pairing.

Unfortuantely, I thought that the thick espionage plot overshadowed the combustible heat between Jardine and Louisa that ignited so passionately upon the pages of A DANGEROUS DUKE. I was disappointed that it took nearly two hundred pages to get to the heat and the build up prior to it was more then frustrating for its lack there of. Again, I think the spy elements were just too strong and therefore commandeered a hefty portion of the stage.

However, I'm still in love with Christine Wells. Despite my gripes, the plotting is still amazing. Abundant in detail with an incredible flow regardless of its rich and complicated material, SWEETEST LITTLE SIN embodies an epic feel. For a limited page count, this woman can pack it in!

For historical romance readers craving thick thriller plots, devilish heroes, and frightening villains, look no farther than SWEETEST LITTLE SIN.

Intriguing Historical
By L. Curtis
The SWEETEST LITTLE SIN is an intriguing novel that sucked me in from the first page. As well as being a strong character driven novel, the SWEETEST LITTLE SIN had some interesting plot turns that I had never guessed. I loved the premise of a secret love. I admired Jardine's reasons for needing to protect Louisa and I loved the fact that Louisa wasn't a wimp who spent pages and pages complaining that her life was now over since Jardine abandoned her. She took action. While I didn't always agree with the choices Louisa made, I understood why she made them.

The only thing that distracted me from the reading experience is the fact that I felt like I walked into the theater thirty minutes after the movie started. Important relationship details weren't explored and I don't know if it was because I had not read the author's previous release, but it I couldn't help feeling as if I was missing a big gap on Jardine and Louisa's relationship. I also wished that more focus was placed on their relationship rather than the mystery.

Despite my qualms, the SWEETEST LITTLE SIN was a great read and I wouldn't hesitate to pick something else up by this author.

From Publishers Weekly
In Sunny's third seductive tale of magic and romance (after 2007's Mona Lisa Blossoming) among the shape-shifting alien race known as the Monère, young mixed blood Queen Mona Lisa embraces her sexuality as a means of healing. Unfortunately, she makes a serious mistake by sleeping with Dante Morell, a rogue Monère man struggling with madness, and accidentally becomes pregnant. Not only is Mona Lisa now demon-tainted but she's also engaged to Lord Halcyon, the Demon Prince of Hell. Further conflicts ensue as she begins to remember killing Barrabus, Dante's ancestral father, during her former life long ago in Sparta, and touching off a terrible curse. Suspenseful twists promise more heart-throbbing surprises in the next installment of this haunting erotic fantasy series. (Jan.)

Companion Short Stories-Must Read for Continuity
By Legequotidie
I was confused at events alluded to in the second and third books in this series, and discovered that Sunny's Mona Lisa short stories are not parallel additions to the Mona Lisa series, but must-reads for continuity. The two stories are found in two separate short story compilations (Over the Moon and On the Prowl). Read 'Mona Lisa Three' in Over the Moon between Mona Lisa Awakening and Mona Lisa Blossoming, then read 'Mona Lisa Betwining' in On the Prowl after Mona Lisa Blossoming but before Mona Lisa Craving. While Mona Lisa Three adds more dimension to the series, Mona Lisa Betwining' is necessary to understand the opening of Mona Lisa Craving.

I recommend Lucinda, Darkly after all of these novels, though, as an independent story line, you could read Lucinda's tale at any point after her introduction to the Mona Lisa world (which occurs in the short story 'Mona Lisa Three').

Entertaining, but lacking
By Andrea M. Olivier
The third book in the Monere series, and definitely a steamy one. I like the characters, but I feel sometimes my least favorite character is Mona Lisa. I want her more fleshed out. I also wish she could commit to someone or at least the same few someones. Are we just going to keep seeing her discover new men she wants, only to discard the previous ones? It also seems like Amber is becoming less of a character and getting pushed further out. He seems very 2D when he does make an appearance.

One particular thing I found quite annoying, was the way things were summarized from previous books. Every time something needed to be clarified it felt forced. Like, here, let's stop the story so we can tell you what happened, and now back to the story. There was no flow at all in that regard. I understand the need to try to make it a stand alone book, but it was done very poorly.

Overall, I did enjoy the book, I read it very quickly, but I did feel something lacking with the story and the characters. I am curious what will happen with Dante in the future. Will he be continued as an important man in her life, good or bad? Or will he get tossed to the side of the story like the rest have been?

We shall see in 2009 I suppose.

Mona Lisa Craving... a bit more continuity
By AngDon
I really enjoyed the first two novels in Sunny's Children of the Moon series and was looking forwarding to delving back into the world of Mona Lisa with this, the third installment. Imagine my surprise, and annoyance, to find that I seemed to have come in part way through the story.

What's missing is Sunny's entry in the 'On the Prowl Anthology - Mona Lisa Betwining' which serves as a bridging story, dealing with events from the second book and detailing an important revelation concerning the main character, Mona Lisa, that is then carried on in this book. (The novella also serves to introduce Lucinda, Halcyon's Demon Dead Sister who now has her own series The Demon Princess Chronicles. A handy bit of cross promotion!).

The start of Craving picks up where the novella left off and only makes vague reference to the missing events which drove me crazy.

This seems to be following the latest trend of authors contributing to anthology books, not with self contained entries from their continuing series, but rather a bridging story which means you need to read it (not to mention buy the anthology) to understand what's happening in the series, or more annoyingly offering the first few chapters of the full length book, leaving you hanging, and usually trying to figure out what the heck it was all about.

The other reason for my middle of the road rating, was that I felt rather than fleshing Mona Lisa's character out, she opted to instead lurch from battle, to sex scene, to battle, etc, cramming the plot in awkwardly between. I also agree with some of the other reviewers that some of the older characters were pushed aside with barely a look in to make way for new characters, who despite having possibility, were left half done.

Having said this, I did enjoy the book and am cautiously awaiting the fourth installment, Mona Lisa Darkening, to see if Sunny can bring back some of the magic that made the first two books so addictive.
