From Publishers Weekly
The pseudonymous Sandford (he's Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Camp) keeps turning out better and better thrillers. In this sixth entry in his Prey series, streetwise Minneapolis deputy police chief Lucas Davenport is beleaguered by perplexing females. Charged with saving the political life of Rose Marie Roux, the ambitious police chief who has her eye on a Senate seat, he's given the assignment of tracking to ground the sex-crazed perpetrator of a series of murders of young women. Davenport's unwelcome colleague in this case is feminist Meagan Connell, an abrasive State Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator who's obsessed with catching the killer before she dies of cancer. Also bedeviled by the ill-timed assignment of a new partner, a yuppie who was formerly assigned to the grade schools as "Officer Friendly" and who happens to be the husband of the mayor's niece, Davenport is additionally saddled with the mystifying death of an elderly woman who died rather conveniently, freeing some local hoods to profit from a real-estate scam. Juxtaposing the dark consciousness of the sex-fixated murderer against the narrative perspective of Davenport, Sandford builds a compelling counter-rhythm of suspense. The narrative is sensitively embued with Davenport's humaneness as, in awe, he watches Connell courageously fight to postpone her impending death. Yet, credibly flawed, the cop also displays a roving eye when he's momentarily distracted from his deep commitment to the lovely physician Weather Karkinnen by a beautiful and seductive TV anchor. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selection; Mystery Guild alternate.

From Library Journal
This novel is sixth in the "Prey" series, written by journalist John Camp under the Sandford pseudonym and featuring Porsche-driving Minneapolis police detective Lucas Davenport. Here Davenport, who has just returned to duty after recovering from a serious gunshot wound, must face a serial killer named Koop, who is dropping bodies all over the metropolitan area. Koop makes the mistake of becoming a little too obsessed with a potential victim and thus leaves a trail that Davenport and his fellow officers finally discover. Despite its length, Night Prey is a tight, fast-moving thriller with appealing good guys and a suitably evil villain. Especially fascinating among the characters is Policewoman Connell, who is dying of cancer and whose fate becomes linked to Koop's in the spectacular climax. Buy wherever thrillers are read.

From Booklist
Sandford's sixth "Prey" novel follows the same formula as the first five: sharp-tongued Minneapolis deputy police chief Lucas Davenport is on the trail of a serial killer--this time a particularly nasty specimen with a yen for disemboweling his victims. Meagan Connell, an investigator from a state agency, plays the de rigueur role of Davenport's feisty, determined female assistant. Davenport is also peripherally involved in a case that appears to involve the Seeds, a loosely organized group of white supremacists. The third-person narration takes the reader along with the serial killer as he makes his rounds, choosing and stalking his victims. Alternately, the narrative follows the victims and the investigators. There is no mystery here; the killer's identity is clear from page one. The suspense lies in the investigation. Will Davenport and Connell catch the killer before he gets that one, last, innocent victim? Yes, the plotting seems lifted from dozens of interchangeable slasher flicks, but the dialogue crackles and individual scenes can be almost unbearably suspenseful. This may be the first good suntan book of 1994. A little sunblock, a tall cool one, and a serial killer--ah, summertime. Wes Lukowsky

From Publishers Weekly
Bourne (The Spymaster's Lady) returns to the French Revolution for her latest romance, this time matching up an English spy and a French aristocrat. Marguerite de Fleurignac, a noblewoman who smuggles émigrés to England, encounters William Doyle in the charred remains of her chateau outside of Paris. She needs sanctuary and agrees to let him escort her through the French countryside. Though she pretends to be Scottish and he claims to be French, no one in this book seems able to keep secrets: William knows Marguerite's identity, she and the French secret police both know he is hunting her father, and everyone, including the secret police and the British, knows everything about the smugglers. Nonetheless, the romance is sweet, and once William and Marguerite admit their love, the ensuing adventure story is everything a spy thriller should be. (June)

The lady was going to lead him to the list. At least that is what William Doyle, British spy, believes when he finds Marguerite de Fleurignac hiding in the ruins of the Chateau de Fleurignac. The lady might call herself “Maggie Duncan,” but William knows she is the daughter of the Marquis de Fleurignac, the same French nobleman whose list names British officers who are being murdered one by one. All William has to do is convince “Maggie” that he is “Guillaume LeBreton,” traveling bookseller, and that he can get her safely to Paris. What William doesn't know is that Marguerite has a few secrets of her own—secrets that could very well get them both killed. RITA Award–winning Bourne delivers another addictively readable installment in her loosely connected Spymaster novels, a flawless romance in which an espionage-steeped plot is deftly balanced with a lusciously sensual love story. --John Charles

Review
"Falling in love is the last thing an English spy and a French aristocrat who heads up a covert network helping guillotine-bound victims escape should do. But when William Doyle discovers Marguerite de Fleurignac hiding in her burned-out chateau and realizes she is key to his goal, they head to Paris and are swept into a whirlwind of violence, treachery, and revolutionary fanaticism that threatens their missions and their lives, as well as their impossible but unavoidable love.
Verdict: With exceptional characters, brilliant plotting, a poignant love story, and clear, realistic descriptions, this engrossing, provocative romantic adventure could easily make revolutionary France a more popular setting than it has been recently. Intriguing, refreshing, and rewarding. Bourne ("My Lord and Spymaster") lives in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia."

Near Perfection (A Grade)
By Katie Babs
The Forbidden Rose is where Joanna Bourne continues to amaze with her thought out, somewhat complex plots and characters who will take a beating and even after all the danger and life threatening action that comes their way, they refuse to be down for the count and live to fight another day. If there is such a thing as swashbuckling spies, I would say Joanna has placed her claim on it.

Marguerite de Fleurignac has been hiding in the French countryside where her family's chateau has burned to the ground. As a noblewoman, she must be careful because she is being hunted by those who want to kill her. These are important members responsible for the revolution who arrest anyone for any reason and send to the guillotine to die. Marguerite has just cause for concern, because she and her ex-lover, Jean-Paul, who is the son of the botanist of the Royal Gardens, are part of an underground network called la Fleche, where they help smuggle émigrés across the channel and into England. Marguerite's father is a mad genius hiding in Paris and is also being hunted by a select group of individuals because he maybe responsible for a group of assassinations in England.

Guillaume LeBreton, and his twelve-year old servant boy Adrian Hawker, come across Marguerite and basically hold her hostage for her own safe keeping. She lies and tells them she is Maggie Duran, a former governess. Guillaume is actually an English spy by the name of William Doyle who works for the British Service and has been sent on a mission to find Maggie's father. He knows who Maggie is as soon as they meet and will gain her trust and protect her from the men who work for her cousin Victor de Fleurignac, a very high ranking official and a close friend of the bloodthirsty and righteous Robespierre. Maggie is wary of this LeBreton, who is very large, hulking, and has a long wicked scar on his cheek. But in order to arrive safely in Paris, she needs the protection and looks to Guillaume to help her, although she acts as if she doesn't need his aid. He is more than willing to help because this way Maggie will lead him to her father.

As Maggie, Doyle and Hawker travel the dangerous roads to Paris, and then enter the city where one wrong move can get them kill, they are unaware that there are others watching them closely who may or may not want them dead. Maggie can't help but succumb to her passions for Gillaume, who is definitely not what he seems. They try their best to find a small piece of happiness in one another arms, but the horrors of the revolution may keep them apart forever.

Joanna Bourne has such an amazing skill at writing strong characters, descriptive settings, including a mature and passionate love story. She uses a great amount of historical research to have penned an amazing book such as The Forbidden Rose. Readers of Ms. Bourne's past books have met Maggie and Doyle before in The Spymaster's Lady. The Forbidden Rose is a prequel and the story of how Maggie and Doyle first met met. Not only do we see how France was full of unrest during the time of the revolution, but how no one can trust anyone, not even the children. This is especially shown with Doyle's young charge, Adrian Hawkins, who also has made quiet an impression in the two books that were released prior to The Forbidden Rose. As an adult first showcased in The Spymaster's Lady and briefly in My Lord and Spymaster, he made a big impression and does even more so in The Forbidden Rose. He is one such character that you can't help but be in awe of at such a young age, including his adversary, Justine, a young girl close to his age, who lives in a brothel and works in some capacity to lend aid to Maggie's cause.

Ms. Bourne's way with words, dialogue and deep devotion and love Maggie and Doyle have for one another will blow you away. Maggie and Doyle's passion for one another at times is rushed, but that doesn't take away from the bond and attachment they build, where they would die for one another if that ever came to pass.

The Forbidden Rose is a fiery and near all consuming tale filled with suspense and wonderful insights on the human psyche. This is one historical romance that is a must read and proves yet again how masterful of a writer Joanna Bourne has become.

Read this 1st in the Spymaster Series!
By Regan
For those who haven't yet read THE SPYMASTER'S LADY or MY LORD AND SPYMASTER, you should know this book comes first in time--it is a "prequel." Unfortunately it was written later so for those of us already fans to the series, we knew how it ended before it began as this is Doyle's and Maggie's story (and they are in the other books but later in time).

Set in 1794 in France, it's a great tale of English spies and French undercover work transporting royalists out of France during the time of the French Revolution and Robespierre. Marguerite is a wonderful young woman who, though raised as an aristocrat, has adapted to the times and is now doing important work that has her wearing many faces. British agent Doyle is after her father who he believes has provided names of English to be murdered by those in control of France. When he realizes he has taken the man's daughter, he keeps her, hoping she'll lead him to her father. Doyle has never allowed himself to get involved with a woman in the field. Ah, but Marguerite de Fleurignac aka Maggie is no ordinary woman! He gets aroused just looking at her and he admires her intelligence and fierce determination. He wants her for his own.

Bourne gives us another strong heroine and another drool-worthy hero. In an interview I did of her on my blog, she siad that Doyle is her favorite character and that this is her best work. I loved it.

Doyle, who is in the background in the other books, is now center stage. The dialog is very witty and at times very humorous. Bourne has mastered the art of suspense and her language is very colorful and fits well the era. Meticulously researched, as always, Bourne delivers up a detailed well-told tale. I liked this romance as well as MY LORD AND SPYMASTER and EVEN better than THE SPYMASTER'S LADY, but I recommend reading all in the series (THE BLACK HAWK, which won the RITA in 2012, is quite wonderful!). Just read this one first!

Here's the series:

The Forbidden Rose - 2010 (France 1794)
My Lord And Spymaster - 2008 (London 1811)
The Spymaster's Lady - 2010 (France and England 1802)
The Forbidden Rose - 2010 (France 1794)
The Black Hawk - 2011 (Paris, beginning in 1794, flashbacks to 1797 and 1802, and London 1818)

Hands down the best book Bourne has ever written
By cristobal
At least for me it is. It should be noted that while it's technically the first book in the series, it was written third.

Twists and turns and daring-do; brilliant characters, outstanding language and writing.

If you're iffy on buying the book and have a Kindle or one of the Kindle For apps, please just download the sample. Love it and know that it gets even better.

AND is actually is an historical novel, not just some book that happens to take place during a certain period in history.

From Publishers Weekly
Charming, romantic, and verging on the wistfully sweet, Kurland's PG-rated paranormal serves as a strong start to a new series. Ruith has carefully cultivated a reputation as a terrifying wizard despite having personally renounced magic, but his fierceness isn't enough to stop Sarah of Doire, a witch's daughter who has no magic, from asking him to help fight her brother, Daniel, who has decided to destroy the Nine Kingdoms with dark magic that once belonged to Ruith's father. Pretense, reputation, and generational guilt provide powerful motivation to stop the diabolic Daniel, who has more intention than ability. Can Sarah and Ruith stop him without letting each other in on their closely guarded secrets? Kurland deftly mixes innocent romance with adventure in a tale that will leave readers eager for the next installment. (Jan.)

A wonderful new beginning!
By Katie Mc P
First, since some confusion exists regarding the progression of the Nine Kingdom's books, here's a current list (as of Jan '15):

Two Prelude short stories, found in anthologies with other authors:
- The Queen in Winter ("A Whisper of Spring" when Symon, the first king of Neroche, woos and wins Iolaire, princess of Ainneamh)
- To Weave a Web of Magic ("The Tale of Two Swords" where Mehar of Angesand and Gilraehen, --th king of Neroche, fall in love and the legendary sword of Angesand is forged.)

Miach and Morgan's story is told in:
1- Star of the Morning (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 1)
2- The Mage's Daughter (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 2)
3- Princess of the Sword (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 3)

Ruith and Sarah's story (which OVERLAPS Miach and Morgan's story in the timeline) is told in:
4- A Tapestry of Spells (this book)
5- Spellweaver (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 5)
6- Gift of Magic (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 6)

Runach and Aisling's story is being told in:
7- Dreamspinner (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 7)
8- River of Dreams (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 8)
9- Dreamer's Daughter (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 9)

Ruithneadh, or Ruith as he is called, is the youngest of Morgan's older brothers as well as the once-boyhood-friend of Miach. (Miach and Morgan being the heroes in the first trilogy.) In those books, Ruith was presumed dead, but there was no proof. A Tapestry of Spells is the first in a new trilogy telling his story.

After a prologue which describes the terrible events at the well, Ruith was so horrified by what his father did and so mistrustful of himself, his temper, and his own power that he buried all three near Diore, a village which "lay to the south in the county of Shettlestoune, which found itself comfortably to the south of anywhere else." And there they stayed buried...until the very pretty and fiery and mysterious Sarah comes along. To make things even more uncomfortable for him, the silvery ribbon of fate that accompanies her is colored with both the beautiful elvin colors and magic of his Fadairian heritage, but also the darkness embraced by his father, the infamous (and thankfully dead) Gair of Caingail.

Sarah has been carefully hiding both secrets and gold toward the day when she can escape Doire and make a life somewhere without thieves and thorns and everything else that Doire is filled with. She'd rather weave her patterns of beauty in the kingdom of Neroche, or possible Meith, and hopefully begin the trip there before her brother brings his evil magic home again. But Daniel arrives with more than she'd bargained for, forcing her to abandon her carefully laid plans and set out to stop him instead.

The result is a quest led by a woman who doesn't seem to have magic, though she does have the steadily-increasing ability to see magic that others have wrought...guarded by a mage hiding vast amounts of elvin power and his past behind a heavy cloak and every non-magical weapon available...and accompanied by the extremely odd assortment of companions they pick up along the way. Their aim at first is merely to stop Sarah's brother, but it isn't too long before we discover that Gair of Caingail's reach extends beyond the grave, and only Sarah's sight and Ruith's knowledge of his father are capable of stopping the evil that Gair's spells have planted.

Why do I love it? Well...though some might call it a bit slow in places, it is (as all of Lynn Kurland's books are) a beautiful unfolding of characters and relationships, as well as a careful weaving of a tale that must have all of its anchoring threads in place for the beauty and power of it to be shown. It's intriguing to discover that this story actually takes place WHILE Star of the Morning and The Mage's Daughter are happening.

A Tapestry of Spells is also nicely different from the first trilogy. Ruith is not just another Miach, Sosar, Turah, or whatever other mage or elvin prince you care to name. His fear of what he might do is very real, and his weaknesses and what holds him back are very justified. Not once did I feel that his character was contrived. Sarah is also quite different, possessing a gift that seems to be quite rare in the Nine Kingdoms...a gift that even mages with vast amounts of power do not have. Her past is still a mystery, and at this point in the story, we do not even know if she, herself, knows why she has the gift she does. She is fiery and independent without being irritatingly so, and she still has a soft heart.

The romance between Ruith and Sarah has only just begun in this story. They are falling for each other, but you will not find even so much as a kiss between these pages. You WILL, however, be swept into their hearts as those magical first moments of love keep weaving themselves into their quest.

I wish I could give the story 4 1/2 stars, but since that's not possible, I'm settling for 4. I don't want to give it a 5, because this trilogy does not compare to the first Nine Kingdoms trilogy. My only fault with this particular book is that it's a bit slow and repetitious in a few places. I think the story would have been stronger if extra words had been cut out, leaving the same plot told in a more concise way. The beginnings of romance, beautiful writing, and magic moments make up for that, though.

Finally, I'll warn that this book leaves off with a cliffhanger, just like Star of the Morning did. But like that one, this is the first in a trilogy (the next two are set to be released in January of '11 and '12). The story continues with Spellweaver and concludes with Gift of Magic.

A Couple Thrown Together On a Quest to Save the Kingdom From Dark Magic
By April
Sarah lives in a nasty back-water of the Nine Kingdoms and has been secretly saving up enough money in order to get away. She hopes to make her living by her skill at weaving. But her nasty brother puts a crimp in her plans. He steals her money and worse, has been studying dark magic and declares that he is determined to destroy the Nine Kingdoms.

Sarah knows she needs to try and stop her brother, but she doesn't have magic powers that can defeat him, so she travels to find a mage who can help her. Reputedly there is a powerful mage who lives like a hermit in the deep woods nearby, so she heads there, even though she has nothing and confronting a mage is a dangerous proposition.

Ruith has been living, isolated, using the reputation of the mage that used to inhabit his tower as a means to keep everyone away. Long ago he buried his magic and is determined to never use it. When Sarah barges into his life, at first he sends her away... but then he realizes that her brother is a problem and Sarah won't stop until she can make sure he doesn't carry out his evil plans. Even as a magic-less man, Ruith decides he needs to help her.

This is the first part of a second trilogy set in the world of the Nine Kingdoms. I have enjoyed Kurland's historicals and the earlier fantasy romance trilogy, and I enjoyed this book as well. The relationship builds slowly, as this is only the beginning book (and it ends on a bit of a cliff-hanger, so don't read it until the next book is out if you dislike that kind of thing!). Both characters have secrets, some they know about and some they don't! But they are good people and heroic, and it is exciting to follow them on their adventure, battling with evil creatures and evil mages and seeing how they start to work together and build a relationship.

Some reviewers here have marked this tale down because the story is continued in the next books, which is too bad...

Nine Kingdoms, Book Four.
By Detra Fitch
Sarah of Doìre, daughter of the village witchwoman, spies a half page from a powerful spell book in her brother's room. When she reached toward it, the spell erupted from the page, wrapped itself around her wrist, and left its dark mark. Her brother, Daniel, has embraced the dark arts and vows to destroy the Nine Kingdoms. Unable to stop him alone, Sarah seeks aid from a powerful mage rumored to live a reclusive life in the mountains.

Ruithneadh "Ruith" (of a place he refuses to tell) was around the age of ten when his father opened a well of evil. The evil spewed from the well and came down to slaughter the entire family. Ruith somehow survived and found refuge in an abandoned cottage within the mountains. He took every last drop of the magic he possessed and buried it deep within himself, topped with powerful spells of concealment and un-noticing. Now grown, Ruith lets everyone believes as they will, but he has never uncorked and used his magic for anything or anyone. But when Sarah arrives at his door, desperate for help against one of his father's dark spells, Ruith finds himself thrust into the life of magic and peril. Though Daniel of Doìre has little magic and only half of the Diminishing spell, should he not be stopped the entire Nine Kingdoms will suffer as never before.

**** FOUR STARS! Be warned that this title has a cliff-hanger ending. As for the story, I found the characters to be well developed and their quest to be larger than life. It blends to make a tale that will be long remembered. With several spell pages scattered around the Nine Kingdoms, the author has lots of potential with future stories. If you have read the previous stories, you may notice one section where our current characters enter a place shortly after previous characters have left. I will say nothing more about it, but I thought it to be a very nice touch indeed. Brava! ****

A Guy's Guide to Being a Man's Man, by Frank Vincent, Steven Prigge

Don Corleone said it best-but these days, it's harder than ever to know how to act like a real man. Now, renowned actor and true-life man's man Frank Vincent--famed for his unforgettable tough-guy roles in such classic films as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and HBO's The Sopranos--shows how any man can be all that he can be in love, work, play, and life, including:

-Getting the best women by being the best man
- Dressing like a champ
- Winning big money and big respect in Las Vegas
- Choosing the right song to set the right mood
- Knowing how to eat-and cook-like a man
- Movies that men will always love
- Selecting, smoking, and savoring a great cigar

Remember: if you want to learn how to be a man's man, you gotta learn from a man's man. And that man is Frank Vincent

From Publishers Weekly
A man's man, according to actor Vincent, is "a jack of all trades, but also a master of all," who drinks only imported beer (that is, when he can't round up a fine scotch, a gin martini with three olives, or a glass of wine), wears cologne, owns a "tailored to perfection" tuxedo and can afford to own only designer clothes (those of Italian origin hold particular sway with Vincent, who's appeared in The Sopranos and Goodfellas). With one glance at the cover, most readers will be able to divine the majority of Vincent's guidelines, but there are a few surprises: recipes for lentil soup, the divination of a Fire & Ice rose and a brief passage on the virtues of monogamy. These, however, are couched in lessons on how to live life as if it were an audition for a bit-part in a gangster movie, told in predictably gauche prose. ("If you want to be a big dog, then don't play like a puppy.") Want to learn how to smoke a cigar? Order a martini? Appreciate wine? Talk your way into an exclusive club? It's all in here, but it's all been done before.

Dreadful
By T. Richards
I'm not sure I've had the misfortune to read a more dreadful book. How to shave...how to smoke a cigar...what was the author thinking? An obvious effort to cash in on the Soprano's popularity. I'm going to guess that Frank Vincent is an engaging, talented, interesting individual with some terrific personal experiences. Unfortunately very little of Mr. Vincent's personality comes through in his book (at least I HOPE this is not the sum total of his personality). If you can't overcome your curiosity, buy this one used.

Take me back to 1978!
By Phil Silverman
While guys my age, completely alienated by the pop culture of the day, are relegated to sports, documentaries on sea lions, Honeymooners reruns, movies like Goodfellas, occasionally something on the literary side comes along to add to the support: Frank Vincent's distinctive voice comes through loud and clear, and the humour is always tasteful, in his "Guy's Guide...".
If you're a single guy trying to make it on 40-grand a year in New Jersey, maybe some of the references herein are...somewhat out of reach, but the deeper meaning comes through - eat well, dress well, join a gym, take a class - it's all about *self-esteem*.

Amazon.com Review
As her legions of loyal readers know, Nevada Barr is not a stripper nor a Las Vegas lawyer; she's a former actress and National Park Service ranger who writes excellent mysteries set in the wilderness. Her alter ego, ranger Anna Pigeon, is once again called upon to be mentally and physically astute--this time on Cumberland Island, off the Georgia coast, where the ghosts of the millionaires who used to live there are being added to by a determined killer. As usual, Barr is best at creating believable scenes of action in a setting that is beautifully detailed but never romanticized. Past Barr books in paperback: Firestorm, Ill Wind, A Superior Death, Track of the Cat.

From School Library Journal
YA. Fans of park ranger Anna Pigeon have followed her from Lake Superior to Mesa Verde; now she takes them to Cumberland Island, Georgia. Part of a fire crew, Anna and her partner are first to discover the wreckage of a burning airplane, and Anna suspects sabotage. Back in civilization, her beau, Frederick, meets her sister, Molly, and discovers that she has all of Anna's good qualities, plus a penchant for city life that he shares, in contrast to Anna's love for the wilderness. The setting is an additional character as the island's lush vegetation, hot and humid weather, and abundance of ticks and chiggers add to and twist the plot. Remnants of once-grand homes of the wealthy dot the island, adding to the stench of decay and the vision of a dying Southern way of life. There is always one scene in Barr's books that remains forever etched in memory; this time it is when Anna hides in an old hog sty and becomes trapped when two of her suspects burn quantities of a marijuana crop. Unable to leave, she pays dearly for the unwanted high she receives. Even in tense situations, humor is apparent in the writing, which makes the reading enjoyable and the suspense more palatable.?Pam Spencer, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA

From Booklist
Barr's tough, likable park ranger heroine, Anna Pigeon, is back in another high-spirited outdoors adventure/mystery. Sent to isolated Cumberland Island National Seashore off the coast of Georgia on summer fire patrol, Anna is bored despite the natural beauty of the area. Then the seashore's local ranger and his pilot are killed when their small plane crashes on the island. When Anna and her crew investigate, they find the plane was sabotaged. Anna develops a list of possible suspects, including some of her own crew. When the killer is finally revealed, even the usually unflappable Anna is shocked by the desperate cold-bloodedness of the crime. Anna's no-nonsense view of life, unorthodox career, strong opinions, secret vulnerability, and soft heart make her unique among today's current crop of female sleuths. Readers like Anna, and they like Barr's engaging mysteries, which are as entertaining and thought provoking as they are fun to read. Emily Melton

Review
“It’s a privilege to call [Col. Jack Jacobs] a friend and an honor to recommend this remarkable life story.”
—Tom Brokaw

“One warning: the book you are about to read, at its core, is a story about selflessness, sacrifice and service, and it collides loudly and rather violently with much of our current culture. We are presently a nation of 120 million blogs and bloggers. Put differently, 120 million of us are enthused enough with our own stories – convinced enough in our own wisdom and wonderfulness of self – to believe there is great utility in posting our every thought, desire and daily movement on the internet, presumably for the common good, the benefit of all. Jack was handed a weapon and told to use it on foreign soil to defend his brothers and his country. As you read this, ask yourself which of the two actions you find more heroic…I will never view my friend Jack in the same way again. I just didn’t think it was possible to admire him any more than I already did.”
—Brian Williams

“Col. Jack Jacobs (Ret.) received a Medal of Honor for is heroism during the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War, vividly described in his new book,If Not Now, When? Duty and Sacrifice in America’s Time of Need. He offers a mix of no-holds-barred personal history and pointed observations about the demands (or lack thereof) the U.S. makes on its citizens today. Never self-indulgent or preachy, Jacobs takes an honest—and often brutally funny—look back at his own life and forward to the future of the military and the nation.”
—Parade magazine

Interesting Read
By jt3
Found this to be an easy, interesting and light read with points that hit you like a sledge hammer if you really stop and think about them. I would recommend it to everyone but especially to those of younger generations who, like it or not, need a sense of history

Being of the same generation as Colonel Jacobs, it was interesting to see the similarities and remember those years, long past that formed the lives of so many. Whether we wish to acknowledge it or not, our thoughts, beliefs and standards are initially formed and influenced by our parents, their outlook on life, and how we are raised. I believe all too many in our generation have failed to realize that fact. If more people today lived by the standards our generation was taught, this country would probably not be in the mess that it is now. End of soapbox. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.

Good Book with Many Nuggets, but They Take Mining
By David M. Dougherty
Although I gave this work only three stars, I still recommend it to everyone, especially to those who have never served their country in any capacity (unless being very well paid) yet dare to call themselves patriots.

The book is about Jack Jacobs's career in the US Army and afterwards, and although he often seems larger than life, I found his story and recollections to ring true for many of the military officers I have known. It is easy (and very human) to exaggerate slightly and always put oneself in a positive light, but those incidents in this work that might fall into that category seemed to me to be fairly inconsequential.

Jacobs is a courageous hero not in the vastly overused sense of the word encountered today where every little baby fights valiantly for life or somebody saves a dog stuck in a drainpipe, but in the sense that he made choices to do his duty to his country, knowingly placed his life at risk for his country and fellow combatants, and did not falter in performing that duty. For this and for producing this book, the author is to be commended.

Jacobs's description of what it takes to earn a medal is absolutely accurate (except for those medals handed out like candy for political and career reasons to officers): one's selfless act must be observed by higher ranking individuals or those they trust, the person requesting the medal must be able to write well, the potential recipient cannot have created enemies of those in the endorsement of approval chain, and the timing must be such that higher-ups are disposed to award the medal at that time for political or morale reasons. None of this detracts from the act itself, but does emphasize what Jacobs himself says -- that an given award really represents the actions of many soldiers doing their duty to the best of their ability and who would be equally deserving of the medal had the circumstances surrounding their actions been different. As one who has written commendations for medals and seen the process up close, I can assure other readers that what Jacobs says is dead on. For this if for nothing else, Jacobs deserves our respect and admiration.

The description of the National War College was priceless, as were Jacobs' comments on General Shinseki's assessments of the troop strength (much greater than Runsfeld's) needed for Iraq that were so flippantly dismissed by Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz. Out history is littered with incidents of civilian incompetence and intrusion in military affairs, and this was no exception. Shinseki paid the price for being right as his career essentially ended at that point, but Shinseki did pull out all the stops in an attempt to safeguard his troops and accomplish the mission. At his level, Shinseki's humble acquiescence to incompetent civilians was inappropriate.

So why not five stars? Well, much of the book rocks along as if written by a journalist with personal color that may be interesting to read for some, but which I tended to skip over until another nugget of information popped up. Jacobs's career after leaving the Army could have been left out as it was not germane to the tenor and thrust of the book. Even his reasons for leaving the Army to provide for his family should have been left out as being almost a betrayal of the very concepts of duty and sacrifice that Jacobs presents as the centerpieces of his story. In effect, he says there are limits to the duty and sacrifice one should be willing to make to one's country. Maybe so, and I also resigned my commission for personal reasons, but I could see a limited future in the Army whereas Jacobs clearly was on the fast track to becoming a general officer where he could possibly make substantial and positive impacts. Now I don't mean to criticize him for that decision, but including that part of his life in this book was a major distraction to me. One does not always have to be brutally honest and display all one's warts, particularly when there is a higher purpose at hand. In effect, his inclusion of his career after leaving the Army made this work much less inspiring that it could have been.

All in all, this is a work containing much that should be learned by the American civilian population and especially its young people. I heartily recommend it to all.

From Publishers Weekly
Award-winning veteran narrator George Guidall gives a masterful performance of White's latest Doc Ford suspense thriller, creating well-drawn characters, including a grizzled ex-wrestler, two Cuban kidnappers, a teenage boy, a snobby Hamptons millionaire and Ford's hippie colleague. The scenes in which Ford painstakingly pieces together clues and provides backstory tend to drag a bit, but the action sequences are gripping and nail-bitingly suspenseful. Mystery fans are well advised to snatch this one up. A Putnam hardcover (Reviews, Jan. 19). (Mar.)

From Booklist
Retirement didn’t sit well with Doc Ford, White’s marine biologist and black-ops agent. Doc’s back in the game now but choosing his own projects, including a spot of vigilante settling up with the serial rapist who killed one of the fishing guides from Dinkin’s Bay Marina, Sanibel Island, Doc’s beloved home. With the local cops on his tail, Doc hops a plane for New York, there to rendezvous with a fetching U.S. senator who finds the biologist’s horned-rim glasses and broad shoulders a very appealing combination. Naturally, things happen. Ford witnesses the senator’s attempted kidnapping and manages to keep her out of harm’s way, but another person riding in the limo, a 14-year-old Native American boy, is snatched instead. It’s all part of a scheme by some rogue Cubans to recover a cache of Castro’s private papers. Soon enough the boy has been buried alive (with an air vent providing a rapidly diminishing air supply), and Ford and best-buddy Tomlinson, who hails from Long Island, are on the trail. The action, typical for White, is relentless, and the tension builds agonizingly (nothing like burying somebody alive to ratchet up the suspense). But the real interest here is the glimpse White provides of Tomlinson’s background (rich kid with seriously bent kinfolk). This may not be the tightest or most entertaining novel in the series, but longtime fans—of whom there are many—have been wanting to hear more of hippie-dippy Tomlinson’s backstory for years, and they’ll be overjoyed to get their wish. --Bill Ott

Not good
By Chris Doyal
I own all Randy's books and am a HUGE fan. A new RWW book is like Christmas to me. This one is not good. It doesn't even read like a book of his. No humor whatsoever and it doesn't flow well for me. No fun characters we all know and love, no stilt house, no time on the water, no historical tidbits about Florida, etc, etc.
I'll continue to buy his books but lately, I've been disappointed more often than not.

Disappointing
By doc peterson
I have been a fan of Randy Wayne White since his non-fiction collection _Batfishing in the Rainforest_, and have been an avid reader of his Doc Ford series since its first novel _Sanibel Flats_ was published in the early 1990's. Therefore it is with a heavy heart that I give _Dead Silence_ 2 stars.

Long gone are the diatribes against developers, snow-birds, con-men and crooks that lured me to the series. The banter between trippy, hippie Tomlinson, a perennial favorite and the more serious, scientific Ford, once the highlight of the story now feels like a long married couple going through the motions. The last few books by White have fallen farther and farther afield, as Ford is pulled to more exotic locations in Latin America, the plot lines getting thinner and thinner, the action more fantastic (as in fantasy), the romantic laisons more unbelievable.

In _Dead Silence_, Ford interrupts the kidnapping of a United States Senator, who instead take a teen-ager visiting New York having won an essay contest. The story becomes increasingly bizzare, as threads of Tomlinson's wealthy family in the Hamptons intersect with Ford's dark past as a covert operator. The action is tense, the kidnapped boy buried alive as Ford is literally engaged in a race against time - if the ransom demands of the kidnappers are not met, the kidnapped boy will suffocate. As an added plot twist, White imagines a Cuba following the death of Castro, his secret files (and secret wealth collected over the last 40 years of his reign) are the bartering chips with which the Senator, Ford and the kidnappers haggle over. Add references to secret fraternities at Yale and you have a sense of just how far over the top (and how far astray from where the series began) White has come. To be fair, White's writing is taut - the action sequences are well written, and the struggle Ford has with getting in touch with his "right brain" is good - but this Doc Ford is a shadow of who he once was.

As an earlier reviewer remarked, perhaps Ford is a burnt-out hero. I won't go that far, as I continue to hope that the character and stories will be salvaged. I wonder if White's "Randy Striker" persona isn't bleeding into the writing of the Ford series - I hope not. While I will continue to read White's Doc Ford books, I can't recommend this one to any but the die-hard fan.

Don't bother
By Randy Fan
I am a RWW fan, having read all the Doc Ford series but this one does not even resemble White's writing. It's almost like someone who flunked introductory mystery writing wrote it. It has multiple story lines, started but never developed or finished, nightmarish violence and too many undefined and unfinished characters. All the charm and uniqueness of the Islands, the characters of the Marina are missing. Tomlinson is unrecognizable. Randy should have quit while he was ahead.

From Publishers Weekly
The title notwithstanding, there's lots of talk in this compilation and relatively few recipes. Thirty-nine Italian-American actors discuss their childhoods, their careers and their big, happy families, emphasizing the importance of food for their sense of identity. The recipes are all home style and unpretentious; a few come from the actors' favorite restaurants like Da Silvano in Manhattan, but many were handed down through the generations. Accordingly, at times the instructions are a little vague and simplistic for novice cooks, who may struggle with the lack of detail in recipes such as Talia Shire's Thanksgiving Gnocchi and Michael Rispoli's Mussels and Clams Campania Style. In general, though, the dishes are easy, quintessential Italian comfort foods, like Michael Imperioli's Spaghetti Carbonara and Edie Falco's Fettucine Alfredo. The bulk of the recipes are for entrees of pasta, fish and meat, though there are a few soups and vegetable sides and a smattering of desserts. Many cooks will already have mastered most of the items; the book is really for fans of The Godfather and The Sopranos, who will love the actors' endearing anecdotes about washing dishes, adored relatives and eating on set, and who might be inspired to try one of the dishes they recommend so enthusiastically. Doctor from Brooklyn enjoys good Italian recipes
By Evan Levine
As a kid who grew up in Brooklyn, NY, I always enjoyed running over to our Italian friends for dinner - our family is Jewish. These recipes remind me of the old style Italian cooking I used to enjoy at our neighbors and its great knowing what these big stars enjoy. If your kind of Italian food is a can of Ragu then this might not be for you but if you love to sautee garlic in olive and enjoy a real sauce then this is the source for your next meal.
