Amazon.com Review
No steel magnolia, Lily Bart is one blunt, tough Southern woman--a tiny, karate-chopping, bodybuilding dynamo who's come to Shakespeare, Arkansas, to restart her life after a series of traumatic events just hinted at in this second novel in Charlaine Harris's series (after Shakespeare's Landlord). When she slips into her gym for an early morning workout and finds Del Packard with a barbell across his throat, she doesn't think for more than a second that it's an accident. Not when it's the third death in a couple of months in a town hardly big enough for its own WalMart. Then the blue broadsheets with thinly veiled hints of white supremacist activity start turning up under the windshield wipers of every car on Main Street. Lily's a relative newcomer to Shakespeare, but as a cleaning woman for the local landed gentry, she's privy to many secrets that most outsiders never learn. When a handsome stranger keeps turning up at the scene of an increasingly bizarre series of events, including a burglary at one of her regular clients and a bombing in a black church, she suspects he may be more than an innocent bystander. Which is too bad, because he stirs up desires that Lily hasn't felt for any man for a very long time. Lily Bard is a complex woman who embodies many of the contradictions of the modern South--its dark side as well as its charm--and this suspenseful, deftly written novel will send new fans scrambling to read its predecessor. --Jane Adams

From Kirkus Reviews
The author's strong, often silent heroine, Lily Bard, and Shakespeare, Arkansas, her adopted hometown, in a second appearance (Shakespeare's Landlord, 1996). Lily cleans houses for a living and works out at the BodyTime Gym. There, early one morning, she and young Bobo Winthrop discover the body of fitness enthusiast Del Packard--crushed by a weight-laden bar. Accident or murder? Police Chief Claude Freidrich, Lily's neighbor and would-be lover, doesn't have a clue. Meanwhile, Packard's death seems yet more evidence of the town's sinister atmosphere, a sense of unease going back to the not-long-ago beating death of black Darnell Glass and the killing, a few weeks later, of white farmer Lee Elgin--neither murder ever solved. Now, the racist fliers placed in car windows around town don't help. Then there's the pony-tailed stranger seen with Hollis Winthrop Jr.--one of Lily's employers and head of his family's lucrative sporting- goods business now that patriarch Hollis Sr. has retired. A frightening act of violence in the black community church prompts the stranger to reveal his true identity to Lily, and it's she, with help from an unexpected source, who rescues him as the whole ugly scenario unravels. Wheels within wheels in a suspenseful story packed with nasty characters, a few good guys, some graphic sex, and more exercise and karate lore than you ever wanted to know. Lily's stubborn, moody, gutsy persona holds it all together, and most readers will be with her to the finish. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Let every eye negotiate for itself, and trust no agent... - Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing
By Cherise Everhard
This is the second book in the Lily Bard Mystery series.

The small town of Shakespeare Arkansas is experiencing some severe race related issues. Flyers of a white supremacy theme are being placed on the windshields of the citizens and three unsolved murders seem to be connected.

Lily Bard, the town maid, happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and is gaining quiet admiration from one racial group, while at the same time getting some hostility from the other. When things get more dangerous and Lily and some of her friends are hurt, she begins to try to piece together the bizarre happenings in Shakespeare.

There were a few issues I had with this story. From the very beginning Ms. Harris introduces comments and references to a fight Lily had been in. Well, I busted out book one thinking I had missed something, I had no clue what she was talking about. Then finally at about page 62 or so she describes what went down.

Then she hints to a certain familiarity between Lily and a newcomer to the town. Little remarks here and there making me wonder what the heck I was missing, then finally on page 149 she clears that up. It really drove me nuts being on the outside of these little secrets and I think it was unnecessary. I don't understand why we had to be in the dark so long waiting to be let in on the important background facts of the story.

Also, there is an unresolved story regarding a piece of jewelry, I really didn't get what that was about. Maybe I am dense, but I read and reread that part of the story and I still don't get it. If anyone can enlighten me I would be most grateful!

Despite the few flaws, which are probably due to my lack of patience more than anything else, I really enjoyed this book. Charlaine Harris wrote another gripping mystery that is filled to the brim with entertainment. She created a complex tale involving racial tensions and hate crimes, small town secrets and plenty of twists and turns. With the introduction of some new characters, the personal life of Lily was enhanced. Enjoy!

5 Klovers - Courtesy of CK2S Kwips & Kritiques
By Jennifer A. Ray
Four mistresses of romantic fiction come together in one fantastic anthology featuring four riveting paranormal tales. I was already a fan of Angela Knight, Emma Holly and Lora Leigh, but Beyond the Dark was the first chance I have yet had to experience Diane Whiteside's talent. In my honest opinion, each of the stories in this collection has earned Kwips' highest rating of five Klovers!

~Dragon Dance by Angela Knight~

Random humans have developed inexplicable paranormal abilities. The change comes upon them without warning, and for many, they never recover from the madness that accompanies the transition period. Hostage negotiator Arial Dean is called in to talk down one such `Hyper', as they are called, in a standoff that threatens not only the man's wife and children, but every living being in the vicinity. It will take the combined efforts of Arial and the mysterious man known only as Tracker to subdue this dangerous new Hyper.

Angela Knight recently became one of my favorite authors, and I have been greatly anticipating this story from her! Dragon Dance in no way disappointed me. This story has several twists that I did not anticipate but which greatly ramped up my excitement for this story when each was revealed. I guess I am trying to say that it got better and better with each page! LOL Of course, it was captivating from page one, with characters that leapt off the page, immediately engendering a feeling of familiarity for them, and definitely a strong empathy.

As can be expected from an author who has affectionately described her work as `blatant smut', Dragon Dance has some blazing hot love scenes between Arial and Tracker! Of course, simply calling this story blatant smut would do this talented author a disservice. Without the emotion Ms. Knight effortlessly wrings from her characters, it would simply be sex. But Knight has written a true love story, with all the romantic passion guaranteed to satisfy any romance reader.

~Caught by the Tides by Diane Whiteside~

It is 1803 and England remains on guard for threat from Napoleon Bonaparte. Both the French and the English employ the use of powerful mages with the ability to control the elements and more in their battles. Owen Bentham is just such a King's Mage, in service to England. As he carries an imperative message that can change the tide of the war, the enemy calls a storm that leaves him near dead.

When Emma finds the handsome man washed up on her beach, she recognizes him as a King's Mage by the ring he wears, and knows that her duty to help him goes beyond simple human kindness, but is a duty to her country. But in caring for Owen, she finds herself caught in the midst of the fight, an unexpected but significant pawn that the traitorous mage will do anything to control. In order to foil the traitor and help Owen succeed in his mission, she must give everything she is to Owen.

As I said previously, Caught by the Tides is the first time I have read anything by Diane Whiteside, and made me oh so glad I have two more of her books waiting on my book shelf right now! Ms. Whiteside writes with a skill that draws the reader in to the story as if they were experiencing it for themselves instead of turning pages in a book.

The author's magical take on the Napoleonic wars was an absolute delight! I am not usually drawn to stories about wars, especially true historical events, but the paranormal element added an extra `oomph' to this story that made me forget this may not be my typical reading choice. Of course, the focus of the story is really on the battle between the two mages as well as Emma's and Owen's romance, with the Napoleonic threat as more of a backdrop.

At every turn, the noble Emma is ready to perform her duty to her country and King, especially when it involves Owen. No matter what he needs, she is willing to give to him, and it soon becomes apparent to both the reader and Emma herself that this is out of more than her `duty'.

Indeed, it is Owen's own past that inhibits him from accepting Emma's assistance in full until the time is critical. Having been used and hurt in the past, he is wary of opening himself fully to another. In the end, he does what he must, and finds deep down, he trusts the lovely Emma above all others with everything he has, heart and soul.

Caught by the Tides was a magnificent introduction to Diane Whiteside's work, and I cannot wait to read more from her very soon!

~Queen of all She Surveys by Emma Holly~

Once again, Queen Tou has won the latest battle between herself and King Ravna. This time, she has taken his surviving warriors hostage, demanding he ransom them for his own son, the legendary Prince Memnon. It is said that King Ravna has been touched by the gods, and his son is rumored to have inherited his father's insatiable lust. Unlike his father, however, Prince Memnon indulges himself only once a month, when the need becomes too great to control.

Queen Tou has also been blessed by the gods with eternal youth, but has been left with a raging sexual need that requires a harem of men to sate her each night. Her new husband, Prince Memnon, is not a man willing to share, but can he satisfy her needs in full by himself? More importantly, can the son of her enemy truly be trusted in her bed and her heart?

No matter the genre she is writing in, Emma Holly never fails to spin a fascinating tale full of some very memorable love scenes. But no matter how wild the sex, she always manages to infuse the scene with a great deal of true caring. Consequently, the sex scenes never come across as gratuitous but instead an expression of love between the characters involved.

Despite her heightened sexual appetite, Queen Tou only chooses men for her harem that she truly cares for. As such, I would not consider her promiscuous, despite her numerous sexual encounters. Especially since everything changes when she meets the irresistible Prince Memnon. Once she touches him, she desires no other, and so begins their love story.

Prince Memnon is a man consumed by worry over his own appetites, having never met a woman who can handle his sex drive when fully unleashed. In Queen Tou, he is more than surprised to find a woman he can respect, love, and with whom he can completely let himself go.

~In a Wolf's Embrace by Lora Leigh~

A Breed male often recognizes his mate the moment he first sees her or scents her. Matthias Slaughter recognized Grace Anderson's importance to him the moment he first met her, but knew he couldn't act on his feelings until his mission was complete. Fate has a way of taking decisions out of your hands, however, and when Grace accidentally witnesses Matthias assassinating her boss, an evil Council Scientist, Matthias has no choice but to take her with him.

Sequestered in a secluded cabin together, Matthias sets out to woo his little mate, explaining why he'd been assigned to terminate her employer. He is determined to allow her to choose him instead of forcing the Mating Heat on her, but his own hormones become difficult to control.

Grace knows she should run far away from this dangerous man, but something about him pulls at her, preventing her from denying him. Soon, their close proximity will break their control, binding them forever in a way that will consume them both.

Anyone who follows my reviews has probably figured out that Lora Leigh is at the top of my list of favorite authors. This woman cannot miss. It is evident in every book she releases that she cares passionately about both her characters and their stories and her imagination knows no limit.

Although sexy beyond belief, Matthias Slaughter is probably the hardest, most daunting Breed male we have yet met in the Breeds saga. The man is beyond hardcore, dedicated to eradicating the evil that spawned the Breeds and now threatens their very existence. It is just his luck to meet his own mate on just such a mission. How ironic that the kind, soft-hearted Grace should be his mate. But it is just those qualities that gentle him, and he fights his very nature to allow her the freedom of choice so important to her.

Grace proves a godsend to the intimidating assassin. With her sweet demeanor and open heart, she easily softens his own. And once she finds her way into his heart and soul, she teaches him how to enjoy life to its fullest instead of just surviving.

In a Wolf's Embrace is an outstanding addition to Leigh's Breeds series, and a story that will stay in my heart for a long time to come. I am not ashamed to admit that I cried more than once during this sweet and sexy romance, and I highly recommend grabbing a box of tissue before you sit down to read your own copy!

Mama Made the Difference: Life Lessons My Mother Taught Me, by T. D. Jakes

The New York Times bestseller that celebrates motherhood-for-mothers and those who love them.

Beloved pastor and bestselling author T.D. Jakes pays tribute to his mother-and mothers everywhere-with powerful, heartwarming stories and lessons from his own experiences as a son and pastor.

Woven into these vignettes are Biblical stories and testimonials from famous children of mighty mothers whose nurturing wisdom and influence helped to shape their worlds, and whose invaluable lessons were the building blocks of great character. Bishop Jakes incorporates those lessons-from believing in God and oneself, to learning the value of support, responsibility, and celebrating others, to understanding the power of prayer, wisdom, and endurance-in Mama Made the Difference, a must-have not only for mothers, but also for daughters and sons, brothers and sisters, parents and grandparents-and anyone else who has ever felt the power of a mother's love.

From Booklist
Partly based on the conventional wisdom that our mothers are our first teachers and partly based on the fact that Jakes' mother actually was a teacher, he frames this book from the perspective of life schooling by mothers in three vital areas: lessons on life, love, and longevity. Jakes has built a strong following among women with his signature empathy for the challenges women face socially and spiritually. He makes note of the changes in the role of mothers in American culture, evolving from idealized images of June Cleaver to the reality of working mothers and unmarried teen mothers, all still charged with teaching their children. Jakes focuses primarily on lessons he learned from his mother, recalling his own upbringing--resisting curfew, learning inspirational poetry, caring for his father, who suffered from kidney disease--and his mother's emphasis on believing in God and in himself. He also includes wisdom passed along by mothers of friends and colleagues, including essays by his wife on her mother and Bernice King on Coretta Scott King. Jakes ends each chapter with a mother's secret prayer and "homework for the heart," questions aimed at strengthening faith and making spiritual connections with mothers' life lessons. Jakes' admirers, and all readers interested in inspirational books, will enjoy this latest in a string of books celebrating women. Vanessa Bush

About the Author
T.D. Jakes is the founder and senior pastor of The Potter's House of Dallas, Inc., and a regular personality on the "Dr. Phil" show. The "New York Times" bestselling author of "Making Great Decisions" and "Reposition Yourself", he lives in Dallas, Texas.

From AudioFile
In metaphor-rich prose, Jakes shares the lessons on life and love that his mother taught him. Jakes is a televangelist, the pastor of a nondenominational mega-church in Texas, and he doesn't shrink from preaching here, though, fortunately, most of his opinions are commonsense wisdoms, spoken with encouragement and backed by interesting examples from his own life. Each chapter ends with a mother's secret prayer and "homework for the heart," both intended to strengthen faith and spirituality. Richard Allen narrates with a zeal that quickly makes listeners think he IS Jakes. The dramatic rise and fall of his voice and the energy of his presentation will have them believing he's in front of a podium rather than a microphone. A MUST READ FOR MOTHERLESS CHILDREN
By Nikita Thompson
I lost my mother when I was 1-year-old and my father gave this to me as a birthday gift. There are so many lessons given for Christian women to apply to their own lives, as well as lessons about womanhood and motherhood. I absolutely love this book!! One of those books you can read over and over again and never get sick of.. Definitely recommend

Moms who made an impact
By Bennet Pomerantz
I love my mom. She drives me crazy, but she also have taught me great lessons in life I carry with me as a testimate to her love for me.

In listening to Richard Allen narrating Bishop T.D. Jakes book Mama Made the Difference(seven cds, nine hours, Unabridged). It stired emotions, which is what a good audio presentation should do. Allen tries a straight narrative format, rather than trying for character voices in this presentation. He also does not try to mimic Bishop Jakes vocal styles, that would be a wasted effort.

Author Jakes takes on the subject of Mothers by relating to his own life lessons he learned with his mother, bible teaching and cases of other people's mothers. It does not preach to the audience, more over it informs and makes you aware without heavy sermons. After I heard the first CD from this audio book, I wanted to call my mom and tell her how much I love her.

In audio format, the unabridged text of this book moved quicker> I only wish Bishop Jakes would have spoken something on this CD book

I am late for this mother days to give these to friends as gift. Well there is always Christmas for my friends who are mothers--maybe you should think about getting this for your mom with a dozen roses and tell her you love her

Tied for the "best" of T.D. Jakes!
By M. Collins
I had resisted buying this book because I am not a mother and had just lost my precious Mom and was afraid it would make me sad. NOT! This is one of the two most inspiring books Bishop Jakes has written; he speaks to women of all walks of life: married, single, mothers, non-mothers...My copy is "dog-eared", marked in, has pages turned down, cover is getting worn....Bishop Jakes encourages us to NEVER give up, it is NEVER too late with God, that we are "surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses" who are cheering us on, that we are DESTINED to follow the courage and strength of those who have gone before from generations past....I want to rise up and shout GLORY as I read this book....We are blessed to have this teaching and encouragement and I thank God!
PS: And, IMHO, Jakes' other "best book" is "The Lady, Her Lover, Her Lord." It is awesome.

"An author to watch." -- Claire Delacroix

About the Author
Elizabeth A. Vaughan believes that the only good movies are the ones with gratuitous magic, swords or lasers. Not to mention dragons. At the present, she is owned by three incredibly spoiled cats and lives in the Northwest Territory, on the outskirts of the Black Swamp, along Mad Anthony’s Trail on the banks of the Maumee River.

She frowned, contemplating her choices, considering well. Lives depended on her choice, especially her own.

A blade? Or a mace?

Lady Bethral, Warder of the Castle of Edenrich and Protector of Her Majesty, Queen Gloriana, the Chosen of Palins, tightened the last of the buckles on her armor as she looked over the rack of weapons at her disposal.

"Don't see why you bother even pretending," Oris grumbled from behind her, his deep voice echoing off the stone walls of her office. "You're gonna take the mace."

Bethral looked over her shoulder at the older man, and raised an eyebrow. He shrugged, lifting his chin to meet her eyes. "You always do."

"It's true, Lady," Alad chimed in. The younger man was nearer her height and could look her straight in the eye. He gave her one of his boyish grins, his blond hair falling into his eyes.

Bethral shrugged, then turned back and pulled the mace off the rack, securing it to her belt. "I like the feel of a mace."

"Can't understand why," Oris said. "A blade's a better choice. What if …"

Bethral ignored him as she checked her saddlebags for the final time. Oris was a good man of strong opinion. He did his job well, and if he voiced his opinion of weapons once in a while, it was fair enough.

"There's times you need to slash, then there's times you need to hack away," Oris continued.

Alad sighed, and rolled his eyes.

Bethral looked around her office. Odd how things had turned out. She'd gone from simple mercenary to this in less than a year's passing.

There was a grumbling sound from the windowsill. The ugly barn cat roused itself, stretching in the sun as it woke from its third nap of the morning. Red Gloves had once said that it looked like a soured boil with its mottled fur. Bethral wasn't sure that was true, but it wasn't the loveliest creature, that was certain.

The cat yawned, showing all its teeth, then started to wash its face.

"Then there's stabbing," Oris continued. "What good is a mace if you need to run something through? I ask you—"

In less than a year's time, Bethral had gained a battle mare, a barn cat, and plate armor that other warriors could only dream of. She'd fought beside the Chosen to challenge the usurper for the Throne of Palins, and had stood at Gloriana's side as she claimed the throne.

She had lost her sword-sister, though. Red Gloves had left before the coronation. Bethral had offered to go with her, but Red had stopped her with a simple question.

"Now who's avoiding the call to adventure?"

Bethral wasn't sure she'd made the right choice that night. But here she was, and here she'd serve, until there was no longer a need for her services.

But for now, she'd a task at hand.

Bethral sighed as she picked up her helmet, and slung her saddlebags over her shoulder. The cat roused itself, then leapt to the floor to twine around her legs.

"You'll see to the Queen's safety while I'm gone?" Bethral rounded on Oris, cutting off his speech.

Oris and Alad both glowered at her. "Been doing it since she was a bit of a thing, back at Auxter's farm." Oris stiffened, his face getting red. "No reason to think I'll do anything else."

"True enough." Bethral nodded to both men. "But she's no longer a child you need to watch over. She's the Chosen, the newly crowned Queen, and new to the throne. If any were to—"

"They won't," Alad said firmly.

"Our oaths on it," Oris added. "They'd have to take our blood before hers would spill."

Bethral nodded, and stepped past them to the door of her office. She'd be gone only a day or two at most. "Then escort the Queen to the courtyard. I'll stop in the kitchens first."

Oris and Alad gave her a bow and headed off to the Queen's chambers.

Bethral stood for a moment, thinking. Oris was right, there were times a blade was handy.

She returned to the racks and grabbed her sword. Oris would snort when he saw both weapons on her belt, but that was fine. Hope for the best. Plan for the worst.

Bethral strode back to the door. Her saddlebags were packed well enough, but some trail rations would not go amiss. Just in case.

The kitchens were busy, with servants headed this way and that, carrying trays and pots of kav. The nobility usually broke their fasts in their rooms, summoning food and drink. The staff would have already eaten, and were now about the business of the morning.

Bethral paused, waited for a serving girl to ease through the door with her tray, and then slipped in behind her. If she was lucky, he'd be …

She was in luck. He was there.

Ezren Storyteller, also known as Ezren Silvertongue, was not one to eat in his room. He preferred the kitchens, with their wide hearths, warm baking ovens, and servants' gossip.

He was careful to tuck in near the hearth, where he'd not get in the way of those busy with their tasks. The room smelled of warm bread, and there was hot whispering of the comings and goings of the noble lords and ladies.

Ezren stayed quiet, enjoying his bowl of pot oats sweetened with honey and cream, a mug of kav near at hand. He'd made it his habit to rise early and take this place, letting none serve him in bed like a lord. No, this was far more comfortable and far more worthwhile. Queen Gloriana needed his aid, and knowledge was valuable. Very valuable.

"More kav, Storyteller?" one of the cooks asked, holding out a fresh pot.

"Always," Ezren swore.

The cook laughed, and poured. "They'll be trussing up a carcass on the spit soon, for tonight's dinner. Mind your clothes when they bring it in. The lads always get blood all over everything."

"I'll have a care." Ezren smiled at her and took a sip. He'd have to leave soon, anyway. Evelyn and Blackhart were departing this morning, and Ezren wanted to bid them farewell.

Of course, Lord Marlon would be there as well, for he was going to open the portal for them. Ezren would have preferred not to come into the man's presence, because Marlon was firmly convinced that Ezren needed to die, and by his hand.

Ezren sighed, catching a glimpse of the manacles that he wore hidden under his sleeves. The Lady High Priestess Evelyn had given them to him and explained their nature. They absorbed magic, including the wild magic that cursed him. Evelyn had been chained with them when she'd been captured.

He'd resisted them at first. Too many memories of his enslavement. But at Evelyn's urging he'd put them on, and felt the pressure in his chest ease. Without the chains, they appeared to be heavy bracelets. And they did conceal the scarring around his wrists. Still, they made him uneasy. As if, at any moment, he'd find himself …

Ezren frowned at his breakfast. If wearing the manacles rendered the wild magic null, it was worth the cost. The people around him were safe. For now.

Evelyn had told him last night that she had learned they were only a temporary measure. The manacles would not last forever. Eventually they'd absorb all the magic they could, and crumble into so much dust.

Well, that was for another day. For now, Ezren needed to finish eating. He took another sip of kav, then froze.

She was here. In the kitchens.

He kept the mug up, using it to cover his face as he let his eyes scan the room. They caught a sparkle of light off plate and a glint of golden hair. There, between the kitchen and the pantry.

Lady Bethral.

It was just a glimpse, and then she was gone, disappearing into the shadows of the room beyond. Moving like a silent spirit, even in full armor.

His … no … an Angel of Light, who had rescued him and saved his life. Lord of Light, Lady of Laughter, she was lovely. Tall, powerful, with hair like gold and blue eyes like a spring sky … and not for the likes of him.

The kav suddenly went bitter in his mouth. Why would she give him a second look? Whipped, scarred, a man unable to save himself from being enslaved. No real skill with sword or dagger, and no equal to her. A storyteller with a broken voice, no longer able to enthrall an audience, much less a woman of her—

"Lord Ezren?"

Ezren turned from his thoughts and saw one of the palace clerks hurrying toward him. "Lord, there is some question concerning damages done at the Flying Pig Tavern last night. The men were there at your expense, and the innkeeper has presented this bill… ." The man held out a roll of parchment.

Ezren stifled a curse at the amount. "Blackhart's men. It has to be. Let us go talk with this innkeeper."

Bethral paused in the doorway and watched as Ezren held his mug out to the cook, his green eyes sparkling. Something he said made the cook laugh.

She'd been out of her mind when she'd bought him for a copper.

She and Red Gloves had been on their way to another city, looking for anyone who'd hire their blades. Her sword-sister had been frothing at the mouth as they'd purchased supplies, all because a goatherder had told her a prophecy about her birthmark. Red had not liked that one bit.

The slavers had thrown the man down to the platform in the slave market, offering him as meat for dogs. Blind with rage, Bethral had flipped the copper coin onto the platform, then eased him up and over her shoulder. Her sword-sister had squawked like a chicken, but Bethral had just turned on her heel and walked away before she'd killed a slaver. Or two.

She'd leave no man to that death, no matter how impulsive or crazy her purchase had been. Red had complained, but she'd fought their pursuers as Bethral had mounted and fled, the slave in her arms.

The cook moved off, and Bethral slipped into the pantry, not wanting to be caught staring. She took a deep breath of the herb-scented air, then went to where the dried meat and hard biscuits were kept. Bethral grabbed one of the small cloth sacks on the shelf and busied herself filling it.

She'd lost her heart when Ezren had opened his green eyes and stared at her, cradled in her arms and safe from their pursuers. She'd caught her breath at the secrets those eyes held even as he slipped back into unconsciousness.

Bethrel had stayed in Edenrich to see if there was a chance that those green eyes might focus on her.

Ezren Silvertongue had recovered with the aid of magical healing and a grim determination to survive what had been done to him.

Beaten, abused, he'd been as close to death as any man Bethral had seen on the battlefield. But even with his tongue cut from his throat, he'd clung to life with a strength of will that astonished her. And his voice …

Bethral had been told that his voice had changed, but all she knew was that his voice sent a small thrill down her spine every time she heard him speak.

Which wasn't often. For Lord Silvertongue had immersed himself in the Court once again, rejoining the life he had lost during his captivity. In particular, he seemed very adept at avoiding her.

Bethral shrugged. What was, was. She could no more change than that barn cat could change the color of its fur. At least she caught glimpses of him occasionally. If she was careful, she could stand in the shadows and listen to him talk to others. And if the day came that he courted and won a lady of the Court, well …

She'd deal with that when the time came.

Bethral sighed, and slipped back through the kitchen without drawing attention to herself. Time to meet Gloriana in the courtyard and then be on her way.

The bright sun blinded Bethral as she stepped through the double doors and into the courtyard.

A quick sweep of the area told her that her orders had been obeyed. Lady High Priestess Evelyn stood off to the side with Orrin Blackhart, who was talking to his men as they clustered near their horses.

The walls were manned, and the guards at the gates of the courtyard were at attention.

Bethral felt a pang of envy that she hoped did not show on her face. Evelyn had found her love, and had fought her way to his side with an unshaken faith in him, despite his past.

"Is it safe?" A soft voice came from behind her.

Bethral glanced back, giving the young girl behind her a nod. "All's well, Your Majesty."

Gloriana nodded in return, then started across the courtyard toward Evelyn. Oris and Alad waited by the door, watchful in their own right.

Bethral frowned slightly as she watched the two women hug. This would be a hard day for Gloriana, having to say farewell to the woman who had raised her for over half her life. Evelyn was leaving this day to return to the Black Hills, taking over as the Guardian until the new High Baron could be named.

Hard for the girl, who sat so new on her throne. Bethral frowned again, not sure that her decision to leave for a few days was wise. The bandits who were harassing the main road into the City needed to be stopped, but …

Bethral's men were gathered at the other side of the courtyard, near the stables, preparing to ride with her. One was leading her horse, Bessie. The roan mare stepped out with pride, her barding gleaming in the bright sun. Bethral chuckled softly to see the cat walk over to the horse and rub against a foreleg. Bessie nuzzled the small creature, giving it a welcoming chuckle.

Bethral turned back to her duty and followed Gloriana, focusing on Blackhart's men. She didn't know them well, and it paid to be watchful.

Gloriana was still hugging Evelyn. "All we need now is High Mage Marlon."

"My father is not known for his promptness." Evelyn returned the hug with a warm smile.

But Bethral's attention had been caught by one of Blackhart's men. The sight of him confused her. What was he doing in Palins? A big black man, dark of skin, his face and arms covered in ritual scars. Bethral was willing to bet the scars also covered his chest. "Greetings, warrior," Bethral said in a tongue she had not spoken in many years. "You are far from the Plains."

The black man's eyes went wide. "You know my—"

A sound from behind her, and without turning, Bethral knew that Ezren had come out of the castle. He emerged into the light, blinking and looking about. "Blackhart"—Ezren's voice cracked as it rang out over the courtyard—"about your men and their activities." Ezren started across the courtyard.

"Uh-oh," said the short man.

"Told you not to put it on account," the tall one said.

Bethral had been about to turn, but stopped at the sight of the black man's face. It turned ashen, his eyes wide, as he stared at Ezren.

"About these charges"—Ezren came right up to them, the roll of parchment in his hand—"it seems . . ." Before he could finish, he stopped with a gasp, as if in pain, clutching at his chest. "What—"

Bethral risked a glance his way as Evelyn reached for him. "Ezren, what's wrong?"

Ezren yanked back his sleeve, revealing one of the manacles of a spell chain. Bethral frowned; the metal band looked like day-old bread, crumbling off Ezren's wrist.

A pop, and High Mage Marlon appeared out of nowhere. "Ready?" he said. "I can't be all day—"

White-hot flames surged around Ezren, exploding with power.

Ezren pressed his hands over his heart, the roll of parchment falling from his hands. He stumbled back as the manacles crumbled away. With a cry he collapsed in the center of the courtyard, barely able to keep his head up. "No, no, no," he rasped.

With a roar, more light surged from his chest, a huge column of light and fire that started to spin. A wave of heat and force washed over the courtyard, knocking everyone off their feet and sending the horses into fits.

Fear surged through Bethral, fear for Ezren, but her training made her lunge for Gloriana.

The power had begun to turn, spiraling in on itself with a sound like a thousand running horses. The very stones beneath them vibrated with its fury.

"Rogue!" Marlon bellowed. The big man was on the ground, his silk robes spilled around him like a deflated tent. Bethral wedged Gloriana behind his bulk, and stuffed her between them.

Ezren had rolled to his side, and Bethral caught the glint of his green eyes. White-hot power flared about his body, and the sound grew louder. The power lashed out, hitting the area around him. His eyes closed, and he started convulsing on the cobblestones.

Terror caught Bethral's throat. If his wild magic had gone rogue, everyone in the courtyard would die, including Ezren.

Bethral caught the glance between Marlon and Evelyn, saw Evelyn stop her apprentice from aiding Ezren. Her heart contracted in her breast. Marlon was going to kill Ezren. He was staring at Ezren, reaching out as if to—

Bethral raised up on her knees, reached over, and jerked Marlon's arm to the side. "NO!"

Marlon didn't struggle. He just turned on his side to look up at her. "He'll kill us all."

No. Not while she breathed. She needed to get him away, away from the City, from people. No matter the cost. Bethral jerked her head up and caught Evelyn's gaze. "Open a portal," she screamed. "As far distant as you can."

The wind whipped at their hair and clothes, and the fury of the power grew.

Evelyn shook her head. "You'll be killed."

As if that mattered. Bethral released Marlon's hand, still focused on the priestess. "As far, as remote as you can," she yelled. "Where he'll not kill anyone else."

To her relief, Marlon nodded to Evelyn. They'd do it. She just had to get Ezren up and through the portal. Bethral took a deep breath, but before she could stand, a pale hand grabbed her arm.

She looked down and saw Gloriana staring up at her, her brown hair tossed by the winds.

"Bethral, no, no! Don't leave me!"

There wasn't time. Bethral had to choose, and she had made that choice long ago. She rose to her feet, fighting the winds. Marlon reached out and wrapped his arms around Gloriana, keeping her down. He was talking, but she was protesting, struggling against him.

The power lashed out, as if understanding Bethral's intent, striking cobblestones with white shards of lightning, as if the magic itself sensed a threat.

A portal appeared behind the fury, its soft curtains a contrast to the chaos around them. It wavered, then solidified as Evelyn and her apprentice concentrated.

Bethral did not look back. She fought her way forward through the waves of raging power around Ezren. The flares danced around her, striking her again and again. She took the blows as she reached his side.

He wasn't dead. Bethral gasped in relief. But he was unconscious, his face turned up to the sky, barely breathing. Once again, as she had that fateful day, she reached for Ezren Storyteller, to lift him from the ground.

But this was no starved shadow of a man. She staggered as she gathered him into her arms, barely managing to heave him over her shoulder.

The winds grew wilder still, their roaring almost a scream in her ears. They battered at her, as if to tear Ezren from her.

Bethral bared her teeth, took a step, and then another, trying to walk into the portal. But the magic threw itself at her, and when she tried to step forward, she staggered again, almost falling. Bethral wept in frustration as she strained. She had to—

Bessie was beside her, snorting, nervous, her nostrils flared. Terrified, but standing firm. The cat was on all fours, claws hooked in the saddlebags, every inch of fur standing on end, mouth open in what had to be a hiss of defiance.

Bethral reached for the saddle, pulling herself up and over in one smooth move. Ezren slid off her shoulder, but somehow she managed to keep him in her arms.

The light, the wild magic surged around them. Ezren's entire body convulsed and Bethral struggled to keep her hold. She leaned forward, and cried out to Bessie. "Heyla! Heyla, girl, go! Go!"

Bessie gathered her hind legs, and started forward.

The raging fury lashed out, striking both at the portal and behind them. A thick strand of impossibly bright white whipped out. Bethral glanced back, saw the strand lashing at the others. It would kill—

The big black man stepped in front of them, naked from the waist up. He stood, arms wide, shouting, "That which was lost is now found!"

Bessie moved, and Bethral's attention returned to the portal that danced before them. The roan leapt forward, as commanded, bolting into the portal. They surged straight through the raw power. For just a moment, Bethral saw open skies and smelled the scent of wildflowers.

Then the world disappeared in a flash of white. Bethral cried out as Bessie slipped out from under her legs, as Ezren tumbled from her arms.

Bethral fell as well, smashing into pain and the deep darkness of her own failure.

Loved this!
By speakfriend
This was a wonderful conclusion to Elizabeth Vaughan's new trilogy. It was also a much-appreciated return to the story line of her Warlord/Warprize trilogy. I had wanted to find out more about the warrior priests, and here Vaughan has begun to answer many of my questions as she both concludes Bethral's and Ezren's tale and returns to Xy and the Plains. And, I look forward to her next book--the story of Heath of Xy and Atira of the Plains.

strong romantic quest fantasy
By A Customer
Ezren Silvertongue the Storyteller knows he owes his life to take charge warrior Lady Bethral, who fell from the sky only to save him from certain death. He also knows he loves her, but conceals his feelings from his lady as he believes he is undeserving of his warrior; partly because he cannot control the wild magic that flows within him.

When the wild magic explodes, Bethral makes Ezren, accompanied by her relocation magic travel to the isolated plains. However, the Warrior-Priests attack the pair with plans to sacrifice Storyteller and regain the wild magic. However, Bethral and some local warriors defend Ezren to insure evil practitioners do not obtain his magic.

Fans of Elizabeth Vaughan will relish Destiny's Star as the author deftly combines her two fantasy sagas by having support Star players fight for their lives on the plains of the Warlands. The lead pair shows they can be stars of their own tale even if it is in another land as the kick butt female warrior and the mage carrier fall in love while helping the Plains' people. Fans will relish this strong romantic quest fantasy as the action never slows down while the Plains come alive with ironically death in the aptly titled Destiny's Star.

Part Romance, Part Fantasy
By Stephanie Lorée
I've never been a fan of the romance genre, but Elizabeth Vaughan has me hooked with her romantic fantasies. Destiny's Star is Book #3 of her "Star Series" and Vaughan takes us back to the Plains from the "Chronicles of the Warlands Series." Avid readers of her work will find this enjoyable and newcomers will be instantly pulled into her wonderful world.

Destiny's Star is a classic love story about one talespinning guy who can't properly sit a horse, and one warrior girl who's shy with men but not with running them through. Swords, magic, love, war, political intrigue, and an unforgettable setting, you can hardly go wrong. Vaughan kept my attention hooked so that I forgot to eat dinner once her book arrived. Definitely worth the read.

A Pleasure To Read
By samanthacycles
Patrick O'Connor is a suave and sophisticated "former" criminal. Liz Brynn is a crappy suit wearing FBI agent. They haven't seen each other for three years, and Liz was always the only woman Patrick wanted but never had. Patrick and Liz come together again in effort to help out Patrick's sister who is having some counterfeiting problems at her casino.

I just have to come right out and say that I loved this book because I fell in love immediately with Patrick on page two. Love doesn't usually happen that fast for me. But I do believe I have a new book boyfriend on my hands. Patrick is smooth and sophisticated - but is he really? Sometimes I wasn't sure if it wasn't all just an act? I liken him to a certain candy with a shiny hard shell and soft melty middle. Were his Armani suits and witty quips hiding something soft and lovable on the inside?

Then there is the no-nonsense Liz. She is an FBI agent who clearly lives and breathes for her job - nothing else matters in her life. She wears terrible cheap suits in boring colors that according to Patrick, do nothing for the curves lurking beneath that polyester. But why does she have beautiful vintage dresses hanging in her closet at home? What is she hiding? What big bad secret is Liz keeping from Patrick? What is the secret that is keeping Liz from giving in to Patrick's advances even though Liz has the same fantasies? Well I'll be darned if it isn't really big and bad.

This is Susan Sey's first book release, and I was impressed. Not only did I enjoy the characters and the fast-paced dialogue, but I thought she did a great job with the changing points of views throughout. I never felt like I was stuck in one character's head for too long. I would be just to the point of saying to myself, "I want to know what Patrick is thinking right now" and then BOOM! the POV would switch over. I thought the overall storyline was well thought out and gave the book more substance than just the Patrick/Liz "will they or won't they" dynamic. Her reveal of Liz's big secret was not what I was expecting at all, and I appreciated the fact that I wasn't able to figure it out on my own as I often do with this genre. And if this tells you anything - in the first 61 pages I already had 7 different pages marked with possible favorite quotes.

amusing romantic police procedural
By A Customer
Patrick O'Conner blames two feisty females over the end of his previous felonious career as a successful jewel thief. He surrendered six years ago to FBI Agent Elizabeth Brynn to keep his sister Mara out of jail. They cut a deal and he assisted the Fed on her cases for the next three years. Ironically she is also the only woman he has wanted but failed at making their relationship personal.

Patrick, who is now a published author, leaves Palm Springs for Grief Creek, Minnesota because Mara, whom he has not spoken to in three years, says she and her Brightwater's Casino and Restaurant are in trouble due to counterfeiters. Liz says she has the case under control and he should go back to Los Angeles after she reads the riot act to Mara. Looking forward to the cat fight between the women who turned his life upside down, Patrick accompanies Liz to Mara's place. As the reformed felon and the Fed work the case together; their desire for one another turns to love. However, she has childhood issues that make commitment impossible and he knows the FBI is her first love.

This is an amusing romantic police procedural starring two likable lead characters who belong together if the heroine can see passed her childhood demon biases. The investigation is fun due to the squabbling between Liz and Patrick; as each knows the other places them on constant edgy tension by just being near each other. With some late suspense to round out the fun Minnesota thriller, fans will want to read this entertaining investigative romance.

Mondey, Honey Delivers
By Marcia Jedd
Fun to read. First-time author Susan Sey writes with great zest and understanding of human spirit and motivation. Immediately you want to know more about former thief and now crime writer hero Patrick who has a past with FBI agent Liz Brynn as they team together on a sting operation. Seemingly all-button-down Liz makes for a compelling heroine as you begin to learn more about her with tinges of her backstory which unfolds to good effect later in the book. It's those little details dropped along the way -- what's up with her designer robe anyway? - that coalesce for textured characters.

I found Sey's writing quite smart and sassy, laced with humor (I loved the references to coffee), which really moves along the story.

Fantastic program on creation of health
By TCML
Dr. Rau has written an excellent, easily understandable book on how to create health and/or recover from illness. His common sense approach, with simply stated yet complete explanations, made it so much easier to follow his program than others I've tried. For instance, I never knew that eating onions has the effect of making the lymphatic system sluggish! I have found it easier to adjust my dietary habits because I have information about how the foods I used to eat were affecting my health. I've been ill with Lyme disease for a couple of years and felt horrid--extreme fatigue, pain, neurological symptoms, aphasia, etc; following Dr. Rau's program for just a few weeks has made an enormous difference in how I feel. I have energy, something I haven't been able to claim for a very long time, and I just feel BETTER. Knowing now that a high percentage of the immune system is in the gut, eating to heal it makes total sense. What a difference! I never thought I'd be eating oatmeal with raw apples and a tablespoon of flax seed oil and enjoy it, but it's very tasty and gives a wonderful, sustained energy throughout the morning. Recipes I've tried have been very, very good. But the best part is the result---feeling great after years of illness. This book should be a bestseller. Buy it!

TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT
By Katwoman
Although I believe Dr. Rau's philosophy about the direct connection between nutrition and health, I find this diet to be very difficult to stick with and very extreme for an average, healthy person.

It is similar in philosophy to a Macrobiotic diet but the influence is European cuisine as opposed to Asian cuisine. It prohibits the intake of sugar, caffeine, processed foods, alcohol and animal protien, while greatly increasing your vegetable and grain intake. I've done the Macrobiotic diet and I experienced increased energy, vitality, better sleep, better mood, etc. Dr. Rau claims that this is what you'll experience with his diet . However, when I did the detox, I experienced headaches, nausea, and a general feeling of illness the duration of the diet and I feel it was due to the total lack of caloric intake. I do think cleansing the body is a good thing and fasting for one or two days can be beneficial. However, I do not feel his detox diet is a healthy approach for healthy people. His claims are that you will feel better and better as the days go on but that was not my experience. In my opinion, no diet that limits your caloric intake to a few hundred calories a day is good for the body. Nothing extreme is good for the body and his detox is way too extreme.

If you do decide to get this book, some things you should know:

The recipes for the three week plan and the one week intensive detox require a lot of cooking and preparation. Because it is based on the regimen done at his clinic/spa in Switzerland where meals are prepared for you, it's difficult for a regular person's lifestyle and schedule. You would basically have to take a week off from work to start the diet and that is unrealistic for most people. I also found more than a few inconsistensies: Dr. Rau opposes any dairy from cows, but some recipes call for cream and butter! Some of the ingredients are very difficult to come by. One day's meal required chestnuts and since I started the diet in Spring, they weren't available and he offers no substitution. Dr. Rau isn't thorough in his explanation of preparing some of the recipes because one recipe on the restrictive detox, he requires you to prepare a corn chowder, but doesn't explain how you are supposed to prepare the leeks in the recipe since you aren't supposed to saute anything. Dr. Rau suggests that hunger would not be a problem because of the food intake. Well that isn't true. I was very hungry all the time because of the limited caloric intake. Dr. Rau is adamant about following the diet to a tee so these inconsistensies were frustrating and it left me pretty doubtful about his claims and philosophies. I felt like he and his publisher were in a rush to publish the book and get it out and I also got the impression that it was more to promote his clinic/spa in Switzerland.

Would I suggest this book? Unfortunately, no.

The Answer to today's medical crisis and to disease.
By P. Costello
I am a practicing neurosurgeon in the USA, trained as a traditional allopathic doctor at an Ivy League school with the addition of a PhD to my MD degree, yet I didn't understand the true origin of our ill or aging body and it's 'diseased states', nor did I learn the answer as to finally preventing these states, until I studied with Dr. Rau. You won't need pills to treat illness or fatigue once you've learned how to cleanse your body of it's toxins and rebuild it the natural and healthy way. I urge you to read this user friendly version of Dr. Rau's God given insight and hard learned approach to becoming healthy (via true healing) and ultimately preventing illness.
