Perry L. Crandall knows what it?s like to be an outsider. With an IQ of 76, he?s an easy mark. Before his grandmother died, she armed Perry well with what he?d need to know: the importance of words and writing things down, and how to play the lottery. Most important, she taught him whom to trust?a crucial lesson for Perry when he wins the multimillion-dollar jackpot. As his family descends, moving in on his fortune, his fate, and his few true friends, he has a lesson for them: never, ever underestimate Perry Crandall.

From Publishers Weekly
Perry Crandall has an IQ of 76, but is not retarded, as he'll have you know: his IQ would need to be less than 75 for that, and he knows the difference even if others may not. Perry, the 32-year-old narrator of Wood's warm-fuzzy debut, has worked at the same marine supply store for half his life and lives with his wisecracking grandmother Gram, whose gems of folk wisdom help him along. But when Gram dies, Perry's selfish, money-grubbing family members swoop in and swindle him out of the proceeds from the sale of her house—and then come a-knocking again when Perry wins $12 million in the Washington State Lottery. Suddenly everyone is paying attention to Perry, but who can he trust? Even his friends from the marine supply store behave differently, and on top of everything else, Perry finds himself falling for convenience store clerk Cherry, who has problems of her own. Despite his family's shenanigans and sinister maneuverings, Perry holds his own and discovers abilities he didn't know he had. The wisdoms here run more cute than deep, but Wood's light humor and likable narrator should have mass appeal. (Aug.)

We are all lucky.
By Susan Tunis
I'm trying to figure out why I enjoyed this novel so much. It's not the writing, which is fine, but ordinary. And it's not a page-turner of a plot--though it has to be said that I read the book easily in two days. It moves quite quickly and kept my interest at all times. But what I really loved about the novel was its first-person protagonist, Perry L. Crandall. It's hard not to fall in love with him!

I've heard the plot described as "high concept." I guess if you can sum it up in a sentence, it is that. Here's the sentence: a cognitively impaired (but adamantly NOT retarded) man wins 12 million dollars in the Washington State Lottery. From there the story is everything you'd expect it to be. There are good, kind people around Perry, and other terrible people who would take every advantage of his good nature. I laughed, I cried, I experienced the full range of human emotion. Really, it's just a very sweet book with a whole cast of incredibly endearing characters. It was simply a pleasure to read.

Lottery
By E. CONNER
Perry L. Crandall has an IQ of 76. He is not retarded. In his own words, "You have to have an IQ number less than 75 to be retarded." But, Perry is a slow learner. He lives with his Gram, who had provided him with excellent coping skills. Perry works at Holsted's Marine Supply, and spends time with his friend Keith. All in all, it is a good life.

Then Gram dies. Unsure what to do, Perry continues to follow his regular routine - including buying lottery tickets. He hits the jackpot, winning twelve million dollars in the Washington State Lottery.

This is where the trouble starts. His brothers, who sold his home out from under him when Gram died, attempt to have him sign over his money. His mother, who has little to do with him, calls requesting money. Total strangers write letters addressed to "Lottery Winner" in an effort to score a few bucks.

In the end, Perry manages to live his life on his own terms. His decisions may not make sense to the rest of us, but for Perry L. Crandall they make all the sense in the world.

I thoroughly enjoyed the character of Perry. As a special education teacher, his actions and behaviors ring true. From his obsession with the dictionary to his insistence that he is "not retarded," Perry is a believable and intriguing personality.

The characters that surround Perry are all too real in their selfishness. Who hasn't heard stories of `relatives' coming out of the woodwork when a lottery winner's name is announced? Although these characters get their `just desserts' in the end, I waited throughout the story for someone to finally stand up to them.

I was slightly disappointed in the ending. While satisfying, it seemed too neat and well-packaged. I would have liked a little more detail when dealing with the brothers' downfall.

All things considered, I found this to be a very enjoyable novel. I recommend it whole-heartedly.

Magical Realism
By Gerald L. Dodge
I just finished reading LOTTERY! I was thinking of three writers as I was reading it: Charles Dickens and Annie Proulx and John Irving. I was thinking of Annie Proulx and John Irving, because the language of the characters is so real and honest, and yet there is something unreal about them as well--not in a bad way, of course! And that's where Dickens comes in, I think. Ms. Wood's characters seem to be completely evil or completely good as are Dicken's characters, for the most part. The only exception in the LOTTERY is probably David. And then I was thinking about the state of fiction in general and I was then thinking that a lot of Irving's and Proulx's characters have that same quality of good or evil with little gray area. I don't think the world is that way at all, but I think fiction should be that way. I think we need more fiction like Ms. Wood's fiction, not because it's uplifting--which it is--but because there is some kind of ringing truth in the words spoken by the characters and then you want to be like those people and know those kind of people. I'm not sure I know anyone like the character's in Ms. Wood's wonderful novel, not really, I think there is much more gray out there in the world, but I sure as hell would like to know people like hers. That is for certain.

From Publishers Weekly
Near the start of bestseller Sandford's winning third thriller to feature Virgil Flowers of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (after Heat Lightning), Virgil gets a call while muskie fishing from his boss, Lucas Davenport (the hero of Sandford's long-running Prey series). Lucas orders Virgil to look into the shooting death of Erica McDill, an ad agency exec from Minneapolis and a big supporter of the Democratic Party, who was staying at the Eagle Nest Lodge in nearby Grand Rapids. A talk with lodge owner Margery Stanhope turns up unusual details: Margery's clientele is mostly lesbian; an all-female rock band is involved; guests who are so inclined can buy young men for an evening's pleasure; and financial reasons could explain the murder. It's a complicated case, but Virgil is up to the task, and, as always, he's funny, smart and tough when he needs to be—and catnip to the ladies. 500,000 first printing. (Oct.)

Review
“Sandford takes literary chances, and he succeeds brilliantly here with Minnesota state cop Virgil Flowers. The characters, especially Flowers, come vividly and delightfully to life, and the dialogue is sprightly, witty, and sometimes sexy. Sandford writes entertainment that’s not to be missed. Grade: A.”—The Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Unexpected twists...Sandford excels at all the required elements of the novelist: plot, personality, and prose. The melding is masterful and produces an exquisitely paced book at once beautiful and profane, a story that fans of both crime-novel approaches can enjoy. He makes Flowers as appealing and captivating a character as always. With a confident touch, Sandford brings it all home in Rough Country.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch

“An entertaining romp...Sandford has long been one of the best crime series mystery writers around. He keeps the pages turning and the dialogue snapping better than anyone this side of Elmore Leonard. An entertaining...and completely engrossing page-turner.”—The Post and Courier

“Fast-paced [and] action-packed.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“It’s a complicated case, but Virgil is up to the task, and, as always, he’s funny, smart, and tough when he needs to be.”—Publishers Weekly

Please, people, review the BOOK, not the price
By Barry S. Sharpnack
I read this book, and I loved it just as much as the previous two Virgil Flowers books. He's an interesting detective, and I always like John Sandford's plots. This one was well thought out, and had a strong ending. What I expect from Sandford. Great as always.

But I am TIRED of reading reviews from people that do nothing but complain about the price. If you have a gripe about the price, contact Amazon customer service! Don't give the book a one-star review because you don't like the price. This is a place for BOOK REVIEWS. It is not a forum for launching a protest against Amazon's pricing policies.
These reviews complaining about the price are improper and unfair to the author, and also unfair to fans who may get the wrong impression of the book.

So please, don't be misled by the bad reviews. This is an excellent read. If you don't like the price, then wait for the paperback.

Virgil is a sexy beast
By Kdramakid
Okay, I admit it. I've got a crush on Virgil Flowers, John Sandford's great new detective. Flowers is reminiscent of Lucas Davenport during his younger, single years. Davenport is now older, married, and unfortunately boring. So, I've been thrilled that Sandford created a younger, hipper, sexier detective, one who thinks about God a few minutes every night before he goes to sleep but oozes sex appeal during the daylight hours. Whereas Davenport dealt with his depression and mental demons, Virgil has a brighter outlook on life. That's refreshing.

The plot is fast-paced and involving. While I've been reading John Sandford for almost 20 years, I was wholly taken by surprise at the end of the investigation. The final twist is interesting and unnerving. Totally didn't see that coming. But, it's Virgil Flowers with his quasi surfer look, obscure and sometimes old-school band t-shirts, cool demeanor, and quiet intelligence that really floats my boat. He's a great character. I'm already looking forward to the next book.

Rough Country Hits It!
By Kathy
I've got to say that Virgil really grows on you. The action and twists kept me guessing the entire time. I couldn't put it down. I've liked Virgil since Invisible Prey, (back then I wondered what kind of a name was Virgil Flowers for a hippy-type cop?) his laid-back manner and his aversion to guns. That's so funny for a cop in his position to not like guns the way he does. I've always liked the Prey novels and John Sandford's really done it up right again. Each Virgil Flower's offering keeps getting better. Although, I felt a little sorry for Virgil at the end of Rough Country. I won't elaborate for spoiler sake. But come on! Didn't he suffer enough in the line of duty? Isn't the hero supposed to get a little something in the end? It was an excellent read all the way around. If John will keep writing them, I'll keep reading them!

There's nothing cozier than a winter evening in Greenwich Village. Streetlights shimmer through icy flakes, cafés glow with welcoming warmth, and a layer of snow dusts historic townhouses like powdered sugar on holiday confections. Murder has no place in such a pretty picture, until now...
Coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi has grown very fond of Alfred Glockner, the part-time comic and genuinely jolly charity Santa who's been using her Village Blend as a place to warm his mittens. When she finds him brutally gunned down in a nearby alley, a few subtle clues convince her that Alfred's death was something more than the tragic result of a random mugging--the conclusion of the police. With Clare's boyfriend, NYPD Detective Mike Quinn, distracted by a cold case of his own, and ex-husband Matt investigating this year's holiday lingerie catalogs (an annual event), Clare charges ahead solo to solve her beloved Santa's slaying. Then someone tries to ice Clare, and she really gets steamed. But she'd better watch out, because if she fails to stop this stone cold killer, she may just get the biggest chill of her life.
This very special holiday entry in New York Times bestselling author Cleo Coyle's mystery series includes a bonus section of delicious holiday recipes as well as a glossary of coffeehouse terms, instructions on making espressos and lattes without an expensive machine, and tips for creating tasty coffeehouse syrups at home.

A winner
By Holly
This is my favorite mystery series and the most recent installment does not disappoint. I am not sure how the quality has consistently remained so high, but it has. This is the eighth installment and it is just as good as all the others.

It's Christmas time in New York City and at the Village Blend Coffee House. Snow is falling, lights are twinkling and a charity Santa is found dead in the alley by Clare Cosi. Clare is the co-owner and manager of the Village Blend, an independent coffee house in the heart of Greenwich Village. She has a propensity for finding dead bodies and a strong need to help solve the murder. Since the expired Santa was an acquaintance of hers that often came into the Blend to warm up from his rounds, this time is no exception.

As with all the Coffeehouse mysteries, the setting is paramount. The holiday season and all its craziness is written about perfectly with the scenes coming alive in the reader's mind. Many of the characters we have come to love (and hate) are back including Matt and Bree, Mike Quinn and many of the baristas at the Blend. A great, believable mystery is at the heart of this book and it kept me guessing until the end.

While I love the series and would encourage the reader to read all of them from the beginning, it would be possible for someone to pick this one up as it stands on its own.

Another winner in a winning series !

What Does Christmas Taste Like?
By Kindle Customer
What Does Christmas Taste like? (opening line of Chapter one)

And smell like and make one's mouth water for drinks and treats not usually part of one's normal diet.

This December Holiday entry in Cleo Coyle's Coffeehouse mystery series, with Clare Cosi, head barista and sleuth, has the gift for the reader of additional recipes for various special holiday coffee drinks as well as desserts: And, much information on the growing and selling of coffee and how it is made.

But the real treat is the excellent writing and character development from author Coyle.

Coyle has the ability to describe characters in terms of appearance, personality, and even their relationships to each other in a few words, so they become instantly recognizable.

And, it is a large cast, with more than one red herring.

I usually solve mysteries early in books and was delighted that it took me half the novel to know for certain the identity of the red haired woman, after discarding three other possibilities.

Even the coincidence of Clare also solving the death from a cold case gnawing at boyfriend and NYPD detective Mike Quinn does not detract because of the realism under the frothy fun.

This is not an English country house mystery in which a set number of characters are involved, but a large city with an ever expanding cast, many with secrets to hide and less than stellar motives.

This could have been a shorter book, a slighter book, and it still would have been a good standard crime novel, but the fleshing out of events and relationships adds substance to the pleasure in the reading.

The ongoing lives of the main characters are also interesting, and I look forward to more. Even secondary characters such a Claire's former mother-in-law and Sgt. Franco add delight and depth to the novel.

There is also the encouragement to actually read Dicken's Christmas Carol, which far too many of us only know from various movie adaptations, so that we might discover the real lesson in the story.

It is not necessary to have read previous Clare Cosi mysteries to understand or enjoy this book. This was my first foray into this series, and I did not need previous knowledge of the characters or setting to enjoy it from the beginning. Naturally, now I am on the hunt for the rest of the books.

I want to know more about what happened with Clare and international coffee buyer Matteo (And, one can only hope, his new wife) as well as how Clare met Mike Quinn.

I confess to coming from a family of tea drinkers and considered this a bit of an adventure in entering a foreign culture. I am also allergic to wheat, so with one exception (Which requires knowing how to make espresso, which I sadly do not) the desserts were also impossible for me, but I read them all eagerly anyway, salivating all the while.

Anyone who wants more recipes and information should check the author's website at [...]. There is also a link there for this author's other delightful mystery series, Haunted Bookshop, written as Alice Kimberly.

The Coffee Lady is back
By Marilyn T.
I've been a reader of this series from the beginning, as well as a frequent visitor to the virtual Village Blend coffeehouse, [...]. This latest installment is a winner. She really brings the feel of Christmas in the city, in particular, the Village, alive. I won't recap the bones of the story, as that's been handled by the other reviewers. Suffice it to say, the mystery is a particularly good one, and I didn't see all the aspects of the end, coming. Clare gets in some comical situations, as well as some dangerous ones, which gives the book a good balance. I enjoy the way her relationship with her ex-husband is handled,: "We'd run our wagon wheels over this road so often, the grooves reached the earth's mantle", as well as her current relationship with Detective Mike Quinn, who comes with an ex as well as two children. It gives a realistic look at a mature relationship that comes with baggage. I'm not a huge fan of similes, and she uses a few, but contains herself, unlike some other authors I could name HA! A special bonus is the last section of the book meant to serve as a primer of all things coffee related: history, terms, drink recipes. She includes recipes for holiday baking as well, and infuses those with things related to characters in the story. Her directions are very specific as well and easy to follow. Well done! I'm waiting (impatiently) for the next book!

Crazy: A Father's Search Through America's Mental Health Madness, by Pete Earley

Former Washington Post reporter Pete Earley had written extensively about the criminal justice system. But it was only when his own son-in the throes of a manic episode-broke into a neighbor's house that he learned what happens to mentally ill people who break a law.

This is the Earley family's compelling story, a troubling look at bureaucratic apathy and the countless thousands who suffer confinement instead of care, brutal conditions instead of treatment, in the "revolving doors" between hospital and jail. With mass deinstitutionalization, large numbers of state mental patients are homeless or in jail-an experience little better than the horrors of a century ago. Earley takes us directly into that experience-and into that of a father and award-winning journalist trying to fight for a better way.

From Publishers Weekly
Suffering delusions from bipolar disorder, Mike Earley broke into a stranger's home to take a bubble bath and significantly damaged the premises. That Mike's act was viewed as a crime rather than a psychotic episode spurred his father, veteran journalist Pete Earley (Family of Spies), to investigate the "criminalization of the mentally ill." Earley gains access to the Miami-Dade County jail where guards admit that they routinely beat prisoners. He learns that Deidra Sanbourne, whose 1988 deinstitutionalization was a landmark civil rights case, died after being neglected in a boarding house. A public defender describes how he—not always happily—helps mentally ill clients avoid hospitalization. Throughout this grim work, Earley uneasily straddles the line between father and journalist. He compromises his objectivity when for most of his son's ordeal—Mike gets probation—he refuses to entertain the possibility that the terrified woman whose home Mike trashed also is a victim. And when, torn between opposing obligations, he decides not to reveal to a source's mother that her daughter has gone off her medications, he endangers the daughter's life and betrays her mother. Although this is mostly a sprawling retread of more significant work by psychologist Fuller Torrey and others, parents of the mentally ill should find solace and food for thought in its pages. (Apr.)

A Wonderful Advocacy Tool for NAMI Members
By Diana Kern
In the book, "Crazy: A Father's Search through America's Mental Health Madness," Pete Earley tells a story that is all too familiar to NAMI members. As an award-winning journalist for over thirty years, Mr. Earley has effectively captured the absurdities of the mental health system in our country through his investigative journalism and his personal understanding of mental illness.

Mr. Earley's son, Mike, has a psychotic episode while in college and breaks into a stranger's home, takes a bubble bath and causes significant damage. Thus begins their long journey into the broken mental health system that so many of us confront everyday in this country. Mr. Earley learns all too quickly just how difficult it is to receive necessary treatment for his son's mental illness. He uses his frustration to launch a personal and professional inquiry into a confusing mental health system coupled with an irrational criminal justice system.

Mr. Earley is granted full access to the Miami-Dade County Jail's "forgotten floor"--the jail's primary psychiatric unit where prisoners are housed without treatment. He can see firsthand that, indeed, our jails and prisons have become the repository for persons with serious mental illness. The prisoners have committed both felonies and petty misdemeanors, all because of their untreated brain disorder. Yet there is no chance at rehabilitation in jails. The prisoners linger in their psychoses for months at a time, only to await a bus ride to a psychiatric facility where they receive minimal treatment in order to have a competency hearing and then are brought back to the jail to await a hearing that will probably never happen.

"Crazy" is a book that NAMI members can use as an advocacy tool to improve mental health care in their communities. When jails become a part of the continuum of care for persons with a serious mental illness, we must speak up and demand change.

Mr. Earley provides the history of deinstitutionalization and the changes in America's civil rights laws to give us a full perspective on why our mental health system is broken. As mental health advocates, it is important for us to know why our mental health system is so shattered. Knowing the history of mental health laws can teach us, not only why consumers cannot receive appropriate treatment for their mental illness, but also provide us with the information necessary to become effective advocates.

In the eight years that I have been involved with NAMI, I continually see how difficult it is for us to educate the uneducated about mental illness. As a person who has lived with schizoaffective disorder for over 20 years, I have a personal understanding of stigma. It is natural for me to talk about mental illness with my NAMI family. I am comfortable because I know that they understand and that I am not judged. It is quite another story to discuss my mental illness and subsequent suffering with those who are not aware of the unique issues that we confront on a daily basis. Yet, if we want positive changes in our mental health delivery system, we must be the ones to speak up and tell our stories. Yes, it can be difficult and often scary to disclose our personal experiences with mental illness. There is always that threat of stigma. This is why it is important to band together as NAMI advocates and show our force in numbers.

Mike Earley gave his father permission to use his name and his experiences in "Crazy" with the hope that his story would help someone else. This was a very brave step and I hope that it aids in Mike's recovery. I know that telling my story, my trials with my illness, the treatment that I did or did not receive, my endless search for the right medications, my experiences with mental health deputies (now known as CIT's) and all my entrances and exits into and out of mental hospitals, has been an integral part of the success of my recovery. I am a mental health advocate because I want others with a serious mental illness to have what I have now. I want consumers to know that they matter in this big world and with treatment they can live a fulfilling and meaningful life. I want consumers and their families to know that there is hope.

Mr. Earley concludes the book with a chapter titled, "Solutions". He stresses the necessity of CIT training in every community. CIT saves lives and changes attitudes. He asks us to rethink the closings of the state mental hospitals through his explanation of unintended consequences in the civil rights laws of persons with mental illness. He also asks us to reexamine commitment laws. "Eighty percent of persons with mental illness can be helped with antipsychotic medication, yet civil rights laws are used daily to prevent patients from getting help."

As a person with a serious psychotic disorder, I am glad that medication was forced on me and saved my life and continues to fix my broken brain.

Very powerful
By Dr. B
This is a must read for anyone in the mental health profession, as I am. I think its critical for practitioners to be reminded every now and then about why we got into the profession in the first place, and most importantly what it feels like to be on the receiving end of our services. This book is an intensely personal work, aside from being a fine example of the muckraking tradition that is journalism at its best. I truly admire Mr. Eareley's willingness to tell his own story. Psychosis is not pretty, as any of us who have had a friend or loved one suffer with it know, and its very hard to watch someone loose their mind. The only thing worse would be to watch it happen to your precious child and be powerless to help. I highly recommend this book to parents, practitioners and most strongly to politicians.

changes your view of mental illness
By Rajesh Nair
If you had little idea of mental health, found mentally ill people to be severly different from you and assumed mental asylums knew what they were doing and took care of its patients, then this book will turn your whole perspective around. And then make you want to donate money and lobby legislation to change the system, because as of now, its broken.

The belief in a supernatural source of evil is unnecessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness. - Joseph Conrad
By Cherise Everhard
This is a novella containing 4 short stories from 4 different authors.

Ritual In Death by J.D. Robb - This is the 33rd book (when including novellas) in the In Death Series, taking place shortly after the events in Salvation in Death (In Death). While at a swanky party, Homicide Lt. Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke become aware of a grisly murder that has taken place on scene.

This is my favorite story in the book, no surprise there. I like any story where Eve is forced to step outside of her carefully drawn box and get in touch with the side of the world where magic and the unexplained reside.

Love Endures by Mary Blaney - A young woman's world is turned upside down when she suddenly becomes a widow. When her husband's ghost seeks her help she has to face the uncomfortable past, and come to terms with the truth and her heart.

This was a nice story, a little hokey at times, but entertaining. I like a ghost story and the side characters really added a lot to this tale.

Cold Case by Ruth Ryan Langan - A policeman leaves the force behind and heads to Vermont for a change of pace and a little healing. When his car goes off the road during a storm, he finds solace and shelter at a farm house with a father and his two stepdaughters.

This story has a bit of a mystery within it and I found the plot interesting and engaging. The ending was a little off to me, for more than one reason, but other than that I liked it.

Wayward Wizard by Mary Kay McComas - A mother struggling to regain her young sons trust is whisked back in time with him, where they meet a Wizard. Together they must journey back to the present.

This is probably my second favorite story in the book; it's surprisingly deep and touching for such a short tale. The author cleverly inserted her characters in the previous authors' three stories, which made it additionally fun.

Each story contains some sort of connection to a suite 606, some connections more in depth than others. Each story also contains a link to the last story in the book, Wayward Wizard. The stories are a decent blend of fantasy and reality with a helping of romance to round out each tale. A quick, light and easy read. Enjoy!

Sensual, Emotional Story Of Reacquainted Lovers
By LeaF
At 38 years of age, Shane "Dom" Dominic has climbed rapidly up ranks of the FBI to be `Special Agent In Charge' of `Operation Serve and Protect', an investigation into the largest organized police theft ring in known history. The FBI uncovered evidence that indicates the corruption stretches back at least 10 years and involves senior officers in the Chicago Police Department.

Dom is an absolute `force of nature'. He is handsome, brilliant, driven and has an innate ability to comprehend people's motivations and to predict how they would act in a certain set of circumstances. This is one strong, enticing hero and I can say without hesitation that I fell in love with him. Dom is soon to be married to Clarissa, a smart and successful financial analyst, who has been extremely patient with his long hours and obsession with the investigation. Dom, however, is having second thoughts about his marriage to Clarissa who, in the short glimpse we are given of her, is a lovely woman.

When Dom was in his twenties he was involved in a short, very intense relationship with Laura Vasquez, a beautiful, very reserved and brilliant artist. Dom had been besotted, head over heels in love with Laura, however it ended in betrayal when she suddenly married Huey Mays, a cop and creepy slimeball ten years her senior. Laura never explained to Dom why she did it. He only knew she left him devastated. He tried hard over the years to extinguish the torch he carried for Laura. However, it continued to smolder and at times burn brightly.

Ironically, Huey was the linchpin for the FBI's continued investigation into the corruption at the Chicago Police Department. He was arrested, jailed and then makes bail. He subsequently commits suicide leaving a note. It is in these unlikely circumstances that Laura and Shane meet again and their explosive passion is rekindled. As a side note, she is one of only three people on the planet that call Dom, `Shane'.

Here is a short sample of the passionate erotic prose that permeates the narrative of this novel. Shane has rescued Laura from a crush of press at the hospital following Huey's death. At her insistence he takes her to her home instead of somewhere he feels would be safer. After Shane makes a surprising and powerful admission with respect to his knowledge of Laura's intimate relationship with her disgusting husband (details that he learned through FBI wire-tapping) an angry, bitter exchange of words turns fiery.

"He saw her eyes go wide but he didn't give her a chance to respond to his totally irrational proclamation before he covered her mouth with his own.

He drank from her furiously. Pain vibrated through his flesh. Not the discomfort of a wound or an injury, but the raw, searing pain that came from exposing a desire that had long been denied.

At that moment he needed Laura Vasquez just like he needed to breathe.

Later he wouldn't be able to say at what point she stopped struggling, precisely when her tongue began to tangle with his, or when her hands rose to caress his neck and her fingers delved through his hair. She pressed against him almost frantically, the abrupt appearance of her need shocking him. . .and nearly blinding him with lust."

Sweet Restraint © Beth Kery

After 13 years of pent up desire detonates between them resulting in an intense scene of spontaneous lovemaking, Laura refuses to talk or meet with Shane. He then devises and institutes an unorthodox plan to force her to acknowledge her desire for him, trust him and finally divulge her secrets. Shane knows in his bones Laura is a natural sexual submissive. Shane is a sexual dominant who has found satisfaction practicing a BDSM lifestyle over the years.

Needless to say, Shane calls off his marriage to Clarissa.

Risking all, Shane handcuffs Laura and takes her against her will to a remote cabin in northern Illinois. There, he nurtures her desire for him by making love to her. The scenes at the cabin are emotional, tender and sexually explicit. There is bondage and submission and Laura does respond to Shane in this context. IMHO, the character development in this novel is exemplary; I got to know these two people, felt the pain of their lost love, their frustration and their joy at finally being able to touch and become reacquainted with one another. There is one particularly powerful scene where Laura's pent up anger bubbles to the surface with such fury she lashes out at Shane. He, in turn, feels remorse and questions his belief that he has done the right thing in essentially kidnapping her.

Laura is a very stubborn and private woman. She has dark secrets that she keeps locked deep inside because she feels she must. There were times where I, along with Shane, was very frustrated with this heroine because she cannot give him her trust and refuses to confide in him. However, as the story progresses to its riveting conclusion, I came to understand and respect why she felt she had to keep her secrets so close, literally bricking up a thick wall around herself.

Readers are also introduced to Elizabeth and Alex Dominic, Shane's kind and understanding parents. There is a particularly poignant exchange between Laura and Elizabeth when they are reacquainted after so many years that brought tears to my eyes.

Laura's only living relative is her brother Joey, also a policeman on the force, who plays a pivotal role in the story's suspense subplot.

The antagonist in this story is a cruel, powerful man with a Machiavellian complex who has 35 years of tenure on the Chicago Police Department. Nothing happens in the city without Randall Moody knowing and he manipulates Shane, Laura and the secondary characters of this story, in surprising plot twists and turns.

The path to Shane and Laura's HEA is not an easy one but if you are willing to ride the bumpy road with them, I hope you will find reading their story as emotional and special as I did.

"This time, he'll never let her go." As a reader, I was relieved he didn't.

Straight as an arrow Shane Dominic doesn't know what it is about Laura Vasquez but the woman makes him insane. She always has. Ever since she left him to marry someone else he hasn't been able to stop thinking about her or stop loving her. A Special Agent in Chicago, Shane is working on stopping a global theft ring and Laura's now deceased husband is right in the middle of the case. Laura knows more than what she is telling and Shane is having none of it. With kidnapping in mind, he whisks her away to try and get her to confide in him the only way he knows how - between the sheets and up close and personal. Add in a touch of dominance and Shane firmly believes that Laura will sing like a bird.

If Laura Vasquez has learned one thing in thirteen years of marriage, it is to keep her mouth shut. The lessons she learned so long ago are still very clear in her mind and no matter what Shane throws at her, there is no way he will ever get any information from her or out of her. Laura yearns and aches to feel Shane's strong arms around her but she doesn't want to be in a cage - she's had enough of that. She craves his dominance with a submissive nature that surprises her but she can't fully commit until she knows the danger is gone. When an unlikely suspect tries to get to her, Laura continues to hold what she knows close to her heart - a move that definitely puts her in mortal danger.

SWEET RESTRAINT will touch some buttons - it touched mine. I love to savor a well written novel containing D/s and SWEET RESTRAINT has that and so much more. The question of Shane's kidnapping Laura in order to get her to talk made me question myself for about fifteen seconds - long enough for me to read Shane's emotions. He loved Laura with every ounce of his being, and had for over thirteen years. She was the other half of his soul and the thought that she was in danger and stubborn to boot, almost sent him over the edge. He loved roughly, he loved tenderly, but most of all he loved Laura with a passion that was undeniable. Laura learned the hard way what it meant to love someone so much that it hurt. She knew firsthand how her feelings for Shane would be construed and she tried to hide them - deep down, however, in her heart of hearts, Laura's soul cherished Shane Dominic and there was nothing anyone could say or do about it. Laura was stubborn and I got tickled more than once at how much it made Shane crazy. He wanted his Laura on a pedestal and she wasn't about to capitulate.

In my book, Beth Kery is three for three! SWEET RESTRAINT joins two strong previous NY print releases, DARING TIME and WICKED BURN, on my keeper shelf. SWEET RESTRAINT kept me turning the pages, on the edge of my seat, and blushing all at the same time. I emphatically recommend this highly erotic, emotionally gripping novel. Beth Kery has definitely come into her own as a storyteller and I couldn't be more excited!

Sadistic psychotherapy
By melina zora
Perhaps this book is worth more than three stars as it is way above average compared to the numerous poorly written books I could barely get through which preceeded it. I guess that when I opt for a romance I prefer the focus to be on that because if I want to read a good crime novel I go to the source and read Raymond Chandler, for instance. I found that in this book, as in the previous, 'Daring Time', there was far too much emphasis placed on the racketeering and corruption our hero was involved in uncovering, and less on the interaction between the hero and the heroine. Perhaps that is why 'Wicked Burn' by the same author, rates way above the others as there are no crimes and agents in that story at all, as it simply concentrates on the emotional struggle of the main characters.

Having said that, I'll write a brief of the story though it has already been done remarkably well by others. Special agent Shane Dominic sneaks into the house of the woman he was madly in love with ten years ago, Laura Vasquez. She jilted him for no apparent reason and married a person that was a very unlikely choice for her. She never gave him any explanation, walking completely out of his life in a cloud of mystery. Shane now has the chance for revenge. Her husband is involved in a criminal theft ring which is in league with some corrupt members of the police force so he hopes to find some kind of incriminating evidence against him. The basement has been wired to tape the conversations among the criminals. With the footsteps of Laura echoing above him, he plays the tapes but the content is not what he had expected to hear. Insteead, he hears Laura's sighs and moans as she partakes in a sexual orgy. On further investigation he finds other paraphernalia of sexual toys used to spice up the sex games that involve the participation of an audience as well. He is stunned to see that the sweet shy girl he used to adore has turned into a depraved sex addict, obviously under the tutellage of her equally pervertd husband. All he feels now is revulsion with the life she has chosen. As for him, he is about to get married to a lovely, intelligent woman and leave his memories of Laura behind once the case is solved.

When Shane is about to make the big break in the case, Laura's husband suicides and the press make a big feast of the case, digging up the story once again about allegations of police involvement in the crime ring. Laura is persecuted by the press who want to know whether it was not so much a suicide as a premeditaded murder. Shane extricates her from the harassment by driving her to her apartment where his pent up passion errupts like a volcanic explosion and he makes unrestrained love to her. He then comes to realize, that much though he despises he, he lusts after her, so he breaks up his engagement. Sensing that Laura is somehow blackmailed and trapped into a situation from which she cannot escape, he decides to use her penchant for BDSM, to force her to reveal the truth to him. He thus abducts her and takes her to an isolated cabin where he keeps her literally bound hand and foot and under constant vigilance. Shane also brings all his experience and prowess to the fore and gives our heroine an unforgettable exhibition of bondage and dominance that made her submit to him but unfortunately not make any revelations. In fact when Shane thinks he has got her eating out of his hand, she runs away and he is back to square one, left confused and confounded.

Whathappens next I will not reveal, but be rest assured it's what you suspected all along. Laura tries to aquire the evidence by herself without involving Shane and puts her life at risk once again and of course our hero is there at the critical moment...

What I object to is the paltry excuse to include BDSM in the story. It seems so bizarre to kidnap someone for disciplinary reasons. Only a seriously deranged mind would think of such a thing and not an intelligeng FBI agent who knows he is risking his career and freedom if his plan backfires! Besides, all this beating around the bush left little room for dealing with our heroes emotions about each other. The sex was hot, but as I said when the story hasn't tuned your heart strings enough, the music does sound a bit flat.

When CSI: Crime Scene Investigation debuted on television in 2000, no one could have predicted the impact it would have on the legal system. "The C.S.I. Effect" is used to describe how CSI and its spin-offs and imitators have made members of a jury think they are experts on forensic science and investigation techniques. In her second CSI-related book, Ramsland expands upon the scientific and investigation procedures that viewers see on the show. Using real examples such as the BTK murders and the O. J. Simpson case as well as episodes from the three CSI shows, Ramsland analyzes the ways technology such as the Internet and DNA testing are revolutionizing the way law enforcement apprehends killers and obtains convictions. Ramsland also looks at how a case can get derailed when eyewitness testimony contradicts the physical evidence or when the handling of the evidence is called into question. A fascinating must-read for CSI fans and anyone interested in criminal justice. Kristine Huntley

Misleading Title.
By Mr. Math Expert
The definition of the C.S.I. effect is "(Because of the tv shows,) people on juries believe they know all about forensic science and investigation." "They're wrong, but they don't know that, and their errors can impact the outcome of a case."

Hence, the book is titled The C.S.I. Effect, making the readers to think that's what the book is about.

So, I proceed to read the first chapter, and it's all about how forensic science works with occasional references to past cases. At the same time, the author explains the rationale of how the episodes on C.S.I. are constructed.

After reading a few pages, I suddenly gave up and refused to read any further.

Who the hell cares about the garbage TV show? Why do I want to go through the relearning of forensic science when I have read about it already in other books? Ditto for the many old cases.

The point is: the book was supposed to be about expanding on the C.S.I. effect because the author started the ball on it. Instead, I am completely misled.

All in all, memo to author: it's not nice to fool the readers, and if she is not going to talk about the C.S.I. effect, don't bother bringing it up because it has no relevance to the rest of the book.

Author of Practical Homicide Investigation
By Vernon J. Geberth
Dr. Katherine Ramsland, Ph. D. has authored an excellent treatise on the subject of The C.S.I. Effect Ramsland described the C.S.I. Effect as " The influence of popular crime shows on the culture, specifically with regard to possibly miseducating viewers who are potential jurors."

Ramsland examines the consequences of a proliferation of forensic television programs and their effect on someone's perception of forensic science and the police investigative process. She covers the simulation and enhancement aspects of the CSI shows as well as computer forensics and digital data. Her chapters on forensic art, virtual autopsy and toxicology as well as DNA and court process along with specific cases illustrate the influence that forensic shows can have on the average person. The chapter on Psycho-logic, which demystifies the science of profiling and how the courts deal with this behavioral evidence, are explained using a case history format. Deviance and psychological oddities seem to catch the interest of the viewing public, and the forensic shows go out of their way to include such programming in their productions

In The C.S.I. Effect, Ramsland presents a number of real-life cases, which were used in various forensic television programs. Of course in the television presentations of these real-life cases, the evidence is always discovered and the science is remarkably accurate.

Ramsland summed it up as follows, "Thanks to these programs people on juries believe they know all about forensic science and investigation. They're wrong, but they don't know that, and their errors can impact the outcome of a case"

Inaccurate Title, Terribly Unprofessional, and Poorly Written
By Manjari Mukherjee
I am disgusted that this book was even thought to be fit for publishing. While writing a research paper on the C.S.I. Effect at Princeton, I was ecstatic to find a book on the subject. I submitted a special request to obtain the book, believing it would be a key resource in developing a paper of my own on the topic.

Unfortunately, though Ramsland clearly knows what the C.S.I. Effect is (she defines it in her introduction,) she spends the majority of the book discussing forensic techniques scene in the television show. The C.S.I. effect is the phenomenon of an aritifical forensic knowledge impacting juror, criminal, and student decisions. This is NOT what this book is about.

If you are interested in entering the field of forensics and want a detailed view of what forensic scientists actually do, this might be the book for you. However, along with not being about the C.S.I. Effect, the book is poorly written, difficult to read, and poorly published. You'd be better off googling for the same information.
