Long before his bestseller ":Wilson":": ":Lindbergh": and other celebrity subjects, A. Scott Berg published in 1978 ":Max Perkins Editor of Genius.": As an old English major I would bet that most college English professors never heard of this important man of American letters! This excellent biography should fit the bill in introducing to modern readers a crucial figure in publishing history!
Maxwell Perkins was born into the home of an affluent attorney in New York City in 1884. He graduated from Harvard with a degree in economics. Perkins worked briefly as a newspaper report before being hired by Scribners in 1910. He died in 1948. What makes this book a joy is to see Perkins working as a mentor, critic, friend and editor of many important authors. Among them":
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald": Perkins had a close relationship with the alcoholic and depressive Fitzgerald. Chapters are devoted to how Perkins guided Scott through such masterpieces as The Great Gatsby, Tender in the Night and his first big seller This Side of Paradise. Many anecdotes deal with Perkins visits with Scott and Zelda his mentally ill but talented wife.
Ernest Hemingway was the best seller of all the Scribners authors. Hem won the Nobel Prize for Literature for such great novels as The Sun Also Rises, Farwell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Green Hills of Africa and many more novels and short stories.
Hemingway was rough hewn who loved his role as a macho he-man. Perkins viewed him as a younger brother. Perkins often visited with Hemingway in Key West and other locales where the two close friends hunted and fished together.
Thomas Wolfe-The giant in size novelist from Asheville North Carolina viewed Perkins as a father figure. Without the revising of such mammoth Wolfe books as Look Homeward, Angel and Of Time and the River it is doubtful if these works would have been publishable. Perkins also provided advice for Wolfe in the latter';s long affair with Aline Bernstein.
Perkins was loved by women authors though he was faithful to his wife Louise. The two often argued. She wanted to act. They had five daughters. Perkins had a long Platonic relationship wiith Elizabeth Patterson of wealthy Virginia stock. Perkins loved to wear his hat inside the office and enjoyed drinking in bars. He was a kind man who became Vice-President of Scribners guiding the
company through the Great Depression.
This is an excellent biography of a man who is little known today to the general public but is a fascinating and important editor.

A LIFE UNIQUELY LIVED

One reviewer of MAX PERKINS complained that there was not enough about Max's personal life in the book. I didn't find that to be the case for the second part of the title is EDITOR OF GENIUS. This indicates the focus will be on the man's work-life and, in this case, that of a workaholic. Max Perkins nurtured, financially supported and coached or coerced some of the greatest writers of the 1920's through the 1940's in producing their memorable works. His "stable of writers" at Charles Scribners's Sons continues to impress with the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Edmund Wilson.

Perkins had a strong sense of each author's quality and gifts; he worked hard to bring their best into the light. The editor would travel to Europe, the Florida Keys, California or wherever his writer of current concern could be found. He'd help Fitzgerald have Zelda admitted to care, make loans out of his own or Scribners's purse, and talk of the WIP (work in progress) to encourage changes he deemed necessary. Cajoling a reluctant Tom Wolfe to produce, to edit, to eliminate often meant seeking him out in a NYC, London or Parisian garret and walking long miles in the dead of night with the "lone wolf."

While Max's family of five daughters and his would-be-actress wife (she promised not to act when they married) went to upstate New York in the summers, Max seldom joined them. He worked long hours, often well into the night at his office, or read manuscripts on the train and over his weekend. When Hemingway finally induced Max to join him in deep-sea fishing, he loved it but fretted if he was away more than four or five days.

Tireless, committed to excellent writing and loyal to his writers, Max Perkins showed genius in his choice of authors to bring into the company and in his intense work with them. We will not see the likes of Max Perkins again in this dramatically changing era of book writing and publishing.

Scott Berg has done all readers and writers a great service in this greatly detailed and extensively researched volume. He writes beautifully as he wends his way through the life of Max Perkins: Editor of Genius and the lives of his writers.

A great biography...

This book is very long. And you don't read it as fast because of so many details that have been accumulated about Max Perkins. The writer who wrote this biography is a great writer himself choosing right detailed descriptions to draw a portrait on Max Perkins and people who were touched by him.
What a great person he was. Every writer would love to be taken under Perkins's wing. He touched every writer he worked with. He helped writers to develop their strengths and worked on their weaknesses. He knew that writers need talent, but he also knew some writers need polishing and trimming before their works would be recognized.
Max Perkins was a person with inner strength, unfailing loyalty, and great patience.
He left a great legacy and shoes too big to fit another like him.
You will find this book encouraging, and you will learn about writing throughout this book and the business of it.

Entertaining follow up to "Always a Bridesmaid"

Cate Padgett has been dating Ethan for a couple years and after finding a brochure from a jewelry store, is convinced he will pop the question. Maybe even on their upcoming trip to Cancun for a friend's wedding. What Cate does not count on is the appearance of Janet, the gal who broke Ethan's heart years ago, and it appears she wants back in his good graces. Instead of the romantic proposal she was hoping for, Cate spends the better part of the weekend ill in the hotel room.

Back in San Diego, Ethan proposes by placing the ring around her cat's collar, only to have the cat and ring disappear. Add to that the fact that Janet has relocated from San Francisco and seems to find all kinds of reasons to pop by the house that Cate and Ethan just purchased, while Ethan remains clueless as to her motivations. As Cate struggles to put together the perfect wedding, appease her mother who is against her and Ethan living in sin to not boycott her wedding, and deal with Ethan's cousin who manages to be the bridesmaid from hell, Cate finds herself questioning if she and Ethan are meant to be together.

Fans of Lyle's "Always a Bridesmaid" will enjoy the chance to see perennial bridesmaid Cate walk down the aisle while trying to avoid becoming an obnoxious bridezilla. Quirky secondary characters and realistic witty dialogue keep the story fresh and entertaining.

i loved the first book! and being someone who fell in love and is marrying her best friend i though the second book would be good. there were some really frustrating parts, especially with ethan not stepping up and being a man and telling his ex to leave.

Love It - Hilarious!

Whitney Lyles is a new author to me. So far, I love both of her books - Always the Bridemaid and now this one.

Granted, there are some spelling errors in the book that I think the editor should pay more attention to.

Cate is funny and as crazy as lot of bride-to-be are, however, she is not completely Bridezilla. Ethan is such a sweet, good guy and can be clueless at time.

I definitely will watch out for this author in the future.

Doctor Death

Doctor Death is back. The serial killer Michael Bekker aka Doctor Death is back. After being arrested and beaten up by Lucas Davenport in a previous novel, Bekker escapes prison and sets himself up in New York. Bodies start turning up, and Davenport's ex-lover New York cop Lily Rothenburg calls to Davenport for help. He is not working with the Minneapolis Police anymore, but uses his time developing computer games. He welcomes the chance to work with Lily, and goes to New York. He soon finds out that Lily and her chief of Police O'Dell hsa a hidden agenda. Davenport is not called to New York only to solve the Bekker case, there is a "Robin Hood" on the loose in New York, killing "bad guys" and everything points to someone inside the police department. Davenport is asked to figure this mystery out, while he officially works solving the Bekker case.
The story is great, and the plot smart. Although you know who the killer is from page one, you keep guessing almost to the end, how does he do it, how does he manage to keep hiding? And who is the Robin Hood? Is it Lily herself, killing off bad guys from the streets of New York? There are many layers in this story, but it never becomes boring, and the characters are likeable or realistic. A good read in the Lucas Davenport series.

This is only the 2nd John Sandford book I've read so far. I liked the first one I read very well (Snow Prey), but this book seemed to drag. I thought the storyline was pretty dull. I was glad when I finished it.

Could be better

As someone who annually visited the local Renaissance Faire in my younger days, I thought it would be fun to read about it from an insider's point of view. Indeed, the conceit of living the Renaissance life 24/7 is the best part of the story. Unfortunately, the writing is rather clunky and it's hard to care whodunit. However, the atmosphere and details are fun. Not a total waste of time, but a bit of a disappointment.

Only Okay

Not the worst book I have read but certainly not the best. There were some portions of the book that I loved and some that irritated the mess out of me. The setting is unique and vividly described. I completely enjoyed being immersed in Renaissance Village and would love to visit a similar place. The characters, however, need some serious work. There are inconsistencies everywhere and the only character who seems to behave the same way all the time is Chase. The main character, Jessie, keeps flip-flopping on who she thinks the murderer is and seems to forget that just a couple of pages before she suspected someone and is suddenly surprised to discover herself suspecting them. Also, she's kind of a flake and seems really immature, often getting mad with no real explanation of why. Other characters also blow hot and cold for no apparent reason, would it kill the authors to spend as much time on character development (and actually sharing that with the readers) as they did on world building. I'm also confused about the whole king and queen rule in the village, is it 24 hours a day? Because it sure seems like it.

The editing on this book was also just awful! Aren't editors supposed to catch plot holes and inconsistencies?

I likely will read the next book in the series if I can get it from my swap site, but unless they find a new editor and flesh out the characters more (and make their actions make sense) I probably won't spend any more money on these books.

Choppy with Bad Editing

I really like these cute quick read mystery books, and this book had potential, but fell a little short of keeping my attention in a steady manner. Told in the first person, it was a little confusing in areas, and choppy. There were places where the characters' conversations really made no sense. One example of this is that the main character, a woman named Jessie, has a twin brother who constantly borrows money from her. In one "scene" she and two others are sitting in the Renaissance Village cafe and the brother comes in, already owing her $100, and asks her for another $20 for a date he has. Jessie becomes embarrassed and flat out denies him anymore funds. The brother gets irritated and Jessie's "love interest" spots him the $20 to shut him up. Afterward, Jessie and her beau leave the cafe and the beau proceeds to tell her how he understands and that her brother just needs to be more responsible and learn to stand on his own two feet. Did I mention Jessie and her brother are in their 30s? This completely contradicts the fact that the beau just loaned him money which he will probably never see again! There are several of these examples throughout the book which to some may seem minor, but leave me shaking my head.

Another issue I have with the book is there is a constant sexual tension or insinuation in almost every interaction that does not deal directly with the mystery storyline. Okay, she's hot for this guy, we get it. It really doesn't add to the plot, and they overtalk wanting to go back to his place; they have time to, they don't have time to, she wishes they had time to. Like too much swearing, gets old after awhile.

Lastly, there were some serious editing errors, which kind of jump off of the pages when you are reading. Some sentences I had to go back and read four or five times and I still don't think they were worded right, and some flat out don't make sense. There is the inconsistent switch between "Ms." and "Miz" (both used for Jessie) and a married character is referred to as both "Mrs." and "Ms." in different places. And editor should have caught this, and if this was an attempt to change things up, grammatically it was bad judgment because it looks like someone does not know proper grammer and the inconsistencies are annoying.

There are also quippy thoughts Jessie has that contain information that is simply incorrect. For example, in trying to be funny the authors wrote in a cute thought of Jessie's that "when the egg split" she got the brains and her twin brother got the looks. Fraternal twins do not come from the same egg so there is no such thing as identical fraternal twins where they would share or split anything. A factual reference that I would consider rather embarrassing as an author to not know. This may have been an instance where the authors assume you get the joke but it would have been more effective leaving out "when the egg split," but worded as it was, it was as if they just didn't know the biological aspect of fraternal twins. Again, a minor thing, but makes me question the authenticity of information presented. Even in fiction, an author needs to do his or her homework and stay true to the facts of these kinds of "minor" details, if for nothing else than to just not look ignorant. An editor should have caught that reference immediately.

All in all, it was a cute book and I will probably read the rest when they come out in this series. You just have to overlook the editing mistakes, somewhat contradictory actions of the characters, and not assume that any kind of historical or scientific reference, in any form, is accurate.

I always hold out hope for the books following the first one because there is room to expand and grow the characters. I would have expected more from authors who already had books out, but I haven't given up on this series.

Lucinda is a Demon Princess who's gained massive powers that no one has ever heard of before. Because of that, she's made new enemies but she's also made new life-long relationships. She has recently bonded to a Monére warrior and a creature from hell called flowers of darkness. They are literally all black and can travel through plants' roots and heal a person. Along with her lover, Stefan, his ward, Jonnie, and two bodyguards sent by her father, their little group just wants to make a new life together.

Unfortunately, soon after she's returned from hell, Lucinda is kidnapped and imprisoned by her biggest enemy, Derek, who's also a demon. He takes her to the outskirts of hell where only beings called the Bandits exist in the place. They are disfigured rejects living in a bleak and empty landscape with no salvation in sight. Derek's one goal is to regain his powers and he's willing to do anything - even sacrifice Lucinda to a horrible fate - to get them back.

Lucinda, Dangerously is the second book in the Demon Princess Series, following Lucinda, Darkly. Lucinda never thought she would end up with two bondmates, and a lover and now that she has them, she's determined to do anything to make sure they're safe and well cared for. However, she's never cared for someone else before and it's taking her a bit to get used to it. Even though the story is in mostly Lucinda's point of view, each character is nicely developed and it doesn't feel like it's just about her.

I felt that the story between Ruric, one of her bodyguards, and Mary, who's a blind human girl, sort of stole the story. I completely was fascinated with what was going on with them and I really wish their part had been longer. Not to say that Lucinda's own plot line wasn't great to read. It kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen next. Hari, her other bodyguard, is an awesome character. At first, he seems like a thoughtless bastard but as I continue reading, unexpected sides of him are shown and he soon became one of my favorite characters.

Needless to say, this is a very erotic romance story and it more than delivers. The chemistry between Lucinda and Stefan is super hot and while she is sleeping with more than one man, it feels as if each relationship is different and special in its own way. The attraction between her and Talon, the "flower of darkness" is exceptionally sweet and I really enjoyed reading about it.

Lucinda, Dangerously is a great story with a kick-ass heroine. The writing is lovely, the characters are endearing and sexy and the plot fleshed out and wonderful. I absolutely enjoyed myself reading this story and I eagerly await the next installment in this series.

complex erotic fantasy

Lucinda the demon dead princess has become the most powerful being ever since she and her companions left Hell to return to the realm of the living and the Monere Queens who fear nothing except perhaps her. However, while there are those who love and adulate her; there are also those who envy her. All Lucinda wants is a nice life with those she cherishes.

She has bond-mated with Monere warrior Stefan and his ward Jonnie, and is some never before known way also with Talon "the Flower of Darkness". Her two guards, Ruric and Hari are loyal though the former also feels protective of a blind human female. However, in this little Eden has come a demonic serpent. Her enemy Derek abducts her and takes her to the edge of Hell where only the only the deadliest survive with no hope because he believes sacrificing Lucinda will restore life to this dead demon.

The complex second Demon Princess erotic fantasy (see LUCINDA, DARKLY) is an exhilarating thriller due a super support cast (including Derek) who enhance understanding of the lead protagonist; ironically much of the exciting story line is told from her either the heroine's anguished or sexual perspective. The secondary subplots embellish the super prime segue as romance, sex and danger stalk the donkey-kicking heroine and her cohorts with Derek lurking. Sunny, as usual brightens up the day with her latest romantic urban fantasy.

I have been waiting impatiently for Sunny's latest book. And Lucinda, Dangerously was everything I thought it would be and plenty MORE!! Sunny has written a story that her fans will be sure to devour. It is both dark and refreshing. A flight of the imagination that captured my attention and kept me spellbound long after I finished the last page. This story builds enormously upon her fist book Lucinda Darkly. And although I think a new reader could read her latest book, I really believe to appreciate the depth of Lucinda Dangerously the first book in the series should be read first. (If not ALL of her books!?)

In this book Lucinda, the vindicated demon princess undergoes some disturbing changes that make her more vunerable/human, something she has not felt for over 600 hundred years when her life as Monere queen was cut short. Now she lives as the demon dead. She has no heart beat and while she is sentient she is not technically alive. In the prior book Lucinda discovered her true paternity and that she can shift into a powerful dragon. But as a rare dragon shifter her life is in danger. Therefore, her father the High Lord of Hell has assigned her his personal guard for protection. As she leaves hell she warns the Monere that a rogue demon named Derek has gone broken loose and is intent on mass slaughter. But before she can even settle down with her `mismatched extended' family, she is kidnapped by Derek and taken to a desolate land where nothing heals and her powers are diminished. Escape looks impossible and her death very probable.

This was an electrifying book. Although Sunny's book/s initial storyline may seem similar to Laurell K. Hamilton's style what she does from that point is very original and never ceases to electrify me.

Sunny's fantastic mix of the sensual (Warning, Lucinda has more than one partner.), dark fantasy and unbelievably delicious storytelling is a delight for the senses. Her stories are filled with unexpected and thrilling surprises which change Lucinda physically and emotionally. The ending was very gratifying as Lucinda's courageous sacrifice transforms her to an uncertain future but she has her family and loved ones to help her transition.

The story does flip from different characters point of views and although I thought this would be distracting I found that it added to the story line as the reader gets insight to the true feeling of Lucinda's companions which made me more sympathetic to them and made for a fuller story. (Perhaps there will be a spin off?!) What strikes me as singular about Sunny's stories is how fascinating her characters are. They are not the usual cookies cutter heroes or heroines. But what attracts me to them are their core of decency and unwavering will power to overcome the unusual obstacles that come their way. Although her gorgeous characters may seem all powerful and even cold, as a reader I felt their compassion and need to help those less fortunate at great risk to themselves

I think Lucinda, Dangerously will blow your mind! I never knew what to expect and I was awed by Sunny's vivid imagination and masterful storytelling skills. As soon as I read it I had to have a moment of silence to let it soak in, I could not believe how good it was!

Another winner from Kate Kingsbury

Cecily Sinclair Baxter returns in Shrouds of Holly to solve another murder. Her previous Pennyfoot Hotel Mysteries are No Clue at the Inn and Slay Bells.

It's Christmas and Cecily and her employees are decorating the Pennyfoot ballroom for a festive Christmas reception. With a staff shortage (primarily due to illness) Baxter, Cecily's husband, has reluctantly accompanied Samuel, the stable manager, to collect fresh boughs of holly to complete the decorations.

While Mrs. Chubb, the Pennyfoot housekeeper, was out collecting eggs, the sleigh returned with a dead body (Gavin Hargrove) but minus Baxter and Samuel.

Samuel turns up with a head injury and his only memory is of bending over Baxter's body. Is Baxter badly injured or is he dead? The only thing known for sure is that he has disappeared.

With Baxter missing, the stable manager injured and a dead body outside her establishment, Cecily is determined to investigate. It's important to find the murderer but it's more important to find her husband.

The deceased Gavin Hargrove seems to have had some enemies. He owed money to a London syndicate for gambling debts. His fiancée doesn't seem very upset over his death. What's that about? And his brother is dependent on Gavin's goodwill. With Gavin dead, he inherits his father's wealth.

It's going to be a difficult task to find the murderer since the police think they know who killed Gavin but Cecily is not giving up. Her husband's life may depend on it.

Kingsbury's historical Christmas novels are set in England and are delightful cozy mysteries. I love the laid back feel of the books. They are satisfying plots that keep you turning the page.

Christmas Cozy at the Pennyfoot Hotel or it is Country Club?

Kate Kingsbury is one of my very favorite cozy mystery authors. Shrouds of Holly finds Baxter and Samuel out in the woods looking for holly to help finish the decorating for the Christmas parties to take place at the Pennyfoot. They fail to return, but the horse and cart return with a dead body in it. Samuel finally shows up but the search for poor Baxter leads to alot of sinister activity with the family of the deceased.

I always get caught up in her writing and the characters are so familiar and entertaining. If you love the English countryside with some mystery thrown in and entertaining and lovable characters - you'll love this charming Christmas read.

Nice series to read during the holidays. No deep thinking necessary. A bit repetitive, but likeable central charactors. Perhaps sometime the author will change the familiar setting and see how the heroine solves a mystery away from her home.

9th Pickett Novel Introduces a Unique Idea for a Killer

Below Zero is a sequel to Box's third Joe Pickett novel Winterkill. Well it's a sequel to 7 others as well, but the ending of those ones isn't given away as Winterkill's plot is in Below Zero. So I'd highly recommend reading that one first, in fact, I'd suggest reading the whole series in order which starts with Open Season. Their order is at the bottom of this review. All can be read as standalone reads, but once you've read one, you'll want to read them all so you might as well read them in order and experience Pickett's family grow and his career, well not really grow but you'll experience it's ups and downs.

In Below Zero, a school boy now living in the Pickett family's old home, trying to impress Joe's daughter, passes her mobile number onto a mysterious caller. That caller will shortly after text Sheridan claiming she is April, a foster sister who the family thought was dead. Meanwhile Joe posted to the outskirts of the state for his past actions (read the former novels) is out to apprehend after rescuing a victim, the Mad Archer, a particularly grade A environmental lowlife, who seems to enjoy shooting arrows into wildlife and leaving them to die. When Joe learns of the texts to his daughter, he immediately takes personal leave and rushes back, set to do whatever he can to find out if April is April, which doesn't seem likely. When he learns the girl claims she is travelling with two men who are doing bad things such as killing people (unbeknownst to Pickett killing in the name of reducing carbon footprints of those who substantially pollute with no regard for the planet), he is determined to rescue her this time round.

Buck Fever is book one in a series of adventures set in Blanco County Texas with a very similar character to Joe Pickett in game warden John Marlin who could practically be his twin separated at birth and sent to Texas.

Time to return to the basics of the Joe Pickett series

I have read all the Joe Pickett novels in sequence. I am finding that the most recent ones need a greater infusion of reality. Below Zero has all kinds of contemporary touches: cold hospitals that seem more interested in insurance coverage than the patient's recovery, carbon footprints and the death of Planet Earth, abused foster-care children, text messaging, and survivalist cults. They cannot rescue, however, a lame, contrived, and unbelievable plot. Box has done much better.

Action has to come from motivation and motivation has to come from character. The villainous father-son duo were not credible. We've all read of dysfunctional family dynamics, but this is one time when fiction is stranger than reality. Another reviewer got it right when writing that Carl Hiasen has done this kind of madcap picaresque much better because he does it with wit, irony, and insight.

I also agree with another reviewer that the Pickett family dynamics are getting tired and tiresome. It's time to send Sheridan and Lucy off to college. They now impede the narrative. We got the point long ago that Joe Pickett is an old fashioned, decent and loving family man.

As Joe Pickett's actions have gotten more and more displaced from game wardening, there has been a loss of what first made Box such a fresh and engaging author. The Wyoming and Western landscape and culture have been central characters in his best writing. I found the early part of this book that dealt with wildlife and the outdoors to be the most engaging along with those sections where Nate Romanski appears.

Once I open the book I can't put it down until it's done.
On more than one occasion ,I have read it in one day.
Seldom more than three ..
Some very late nights well early mornings.
They are worth even minute of lost sleep to get to the twisting turning last page.
