About the Author
Kevin Dockery has been a soldier in the President's Guard under Presidents Nixon and Ford, a grade-school teacher, radio broadcaster, gunsmith, and historian. He even spent time in Iraq and Kuwait during Desert Storm as what he refers to as a "corporate mercenary." As a noted military historian, he has written a number of books on the history of the Navy SEALs and the lives of the men who lived that history including Navy SEALs: A History of the Early Years.

Dockery misses the target with this one.

Dockery, the author of a number of books on military subjects, phoned this one in. "Stalkers and Shooters" begins with several chapters that present a brief history of sniping. Readers of other books on sniping will recognize a number of the anecdotes Dockery uses. The discussion of current sniping focuses mainly on American snipers.

Dockery includes sections of commentary from experienced police and military snipers. This is the portion of this work readers are likely to find most interesting. Unfortunately, the quality of this commentary is hit-or-miss. The better sections are informative and well-composed. Some of the others meander and could have used better editing, notably one in which the contributing sniper rambles on in a know-it-all way about, among other things, politics, journalism and grand strategy in Iraq. It doesn't fit in a book about sniping and some of the soldier's clear factual errors go uncorrected by the author.

Photographs of soldiers holding sniping rifles dot the pages. Many of the photos were taken in Iraq. They are of good quality, but not all are closely related to the nearby text.

There are more interesting and better-organized books on sniping available. Steer clear of this one.

The book is slightly mis-titled. Early chapters are more about firearms-development and include fairly detailed descriptions of some battles in which a purposeful long-range rifle shot was effective in killing an enemy. It is a good book although a little uneven, but certainly worth the time. It is not, however, of the same format and detail as Martin Pegler's Out of Nowhere: A history of the Military Sniper. So the title may mislead some readers who then feel the book doesn't fulfill its apparent promise.

The text was obviously run through a spell checker but some mistakes got through, allowing a plural when the word should be singular, or not catching an error when a correctly spelled but syntactically incorrect word occurred through mistyping (or typesetting). There were also a few odd uses of the semi-colon and various other stylistic blunders. On the other hand, the author is clearly trying to be accurate and informative, and he makes satisfying distinctions that some authors would glide over.

I would have liked to see footnotes. There were many instances when, some fact being mentioned in the text, I wondered where the author learned it.

The book ends with some very interesting chapters (the best in the book) written by actual police and military snipers; and in these pages, as well as earlier in the book, the question arises of how the term 'sniper' should be used in our language. As used in the military and law enforcement, the term is a job title, so the methods used, skills needed, and the duties routinely assigned to those with the title -- mission planning, land navigation, camouflage, stalking (getting into position), concealment, reconnaissance, surveillance, reporting intel, understanding ballistics and optics, being a marksman, having a partner who is a spotter (observer), shooting only under legally sanctioned conditions -- have within these communities come to be seen as unavoidably included within the full meaning of the term. Outside of those communities, or those who look to them for language usage, a sniper is someone who, from concealment or a long distance (which is effectively concealment even if the sniper's position itself is not concealed), uses a rifle to purposefully shoot, with the intent to kill, a specific, targeted individual. It is not a job title. It refers to a particular type of shooter and manner of killing. Oswald was then a sniper, as was Charles Whitman (chapter 20 is an account of Whitman's shooting spree from the bell tower), when under strict law enforcement or military usage they were not.

Not exactly what I expected

The author spends a lot of time discussing longbows, crossbows etc. which technically could have been used by "snipers" however the term is most frequently associated with firearms. There are many photographs of modern sniper rifles etc. but not an overabundance of details.

Tremendous Success - THANK YOU!

I never thought I would be able to talk about life without sugar for more

than 3 days. I am in the process of getting rid of sugar from my diet,

and am proud (and SHOCKED) to say that I have been refined sugar-free

for 19 days. My personal record before this was 8 days (a rarity, most

of the time it was 2 or 3 days!)

Truly, honestly, I have Sugar Shock! to thank for helping me finally

kick the habit. In reading about how sugar sets up a subclinical

infammation that can cause so many diseases like cancer, heart disease,

arthritis, diabetes, etc, it really helped me to gain perspective on my

habit.

Pretty Good Book

I think that this book provides a TON of information about the harmfulness of sugar, which is good, but it was almost too much background info for me. I ended up skipping some parts because it just went on and on about various conditions related to sugar (again, that's great and important, but it was just too much repitition for me).

Instead, I was hoping for lots of suggestions for kicking the sugar addiction....I happen to be someone who eats some form of dessert after lunch and dinner, and I wanted to break that habit. Overall, the book had a lot of good ideas, but I found some better ones (and basically the same info, but condensed) in "Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet" by Anne Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., C.N.S. Either way, this book is a useful tool and I would recommend it, but I would definitely recommend "Get the Sugar Out" more.

SUGAR SHOCK-Great book

Sugar Shock I would to have to say is one of the greatest books that I've read to break down my health problems.

Like many other who've written, I was a true sugar addict. I hoarded sweets: twizzlers, cookies, donuts, granola bars, cereal bars, sugary cereals. I ate it all. I was so addicted to it. I had no idea that this sugar was linked to my freqent bouts of irritability, negativity, and brain fog. This is the danger of refined sugar. Refined sugar, having no fiber or protein, goes straight to your blood stream and spikes it. Your brain, getting its form of energy from glucose in your blood, now is disrupted from doing so caused by the spike in the blood stream. Insulin then has to be released to lower the blood sugar level, and many times it becomes too low. So your brain can't function properly with the low sugar. The result-- panic, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, frustration, anger. It can make you go crazy. This is the effects of eating refined sugar.

Before I read this book, I would have never linked to it to refined sugar, but now I know that that along with wheat, pretty much white flour, stripped of all the fiber, is the cause for all these blood-sugar disruptions.

Ever since I got rid of the sugary foods and floury foods, the brain fog, the irritability, the negativity, has all gone. It's all over. For me, it lasted like three years. Now today, I'm pretty much done with refined sugar, no more soda, no more twizzlers (and I was addicted to twizzlers), no more fruit juice, jelly and all the sugary stuff. And the other bad part about refined sugar is it is so addictive. Any time I ate cookies, I had at least 8 with many times going to 15-20 cookies at one sitting. Sometimes I would just finish the whole pack at one sitting. Twizzlers, 20-25 twizzlers at once. Same with cereal, the whole box at once. Refined is so addictive.

I thank Connie Bennett so much for writing this book. This has helped me profusely. The days of irritability are over. Does this mean I don't eat sugar anymore? Of course not. Now I eat sugar in its natural form. Fruit is sweet and being that its loaded with fiber, it doesn't cause blood sugar fluctuations, assuming you eat one at a time, which is the rule for fruit eating. I eat dried fruit, which tastes just like candy, without the bad side effects. Dates, dried strawberries and other fruits are all great alternatives.

My advice to you all: eat natural sugar, what God provides, fruits and dried fruits and raw honey, stevia leaves, or dates to sweeten foods. It's when we eat the unnatural foods, stripped, processed, heated, that consequences result.

PROVEN CREEPY BEYOND A DOUBT

I doubt that this case merited much attention nationally, but it appears it created quite a stir in the vicinity of Oakland and Berkeley CA area where it occured.
The facts? A young mother disappears without a trace. Her van is found, but the case picks up steam as it becomes obvious that there are any number of possible suspects. The potential perps include an estranged husband, a former boyfriend/best friend of the hubby upon whom the victim appears to be financially dependent on, and a current boyfriend the victim picked up on the net. In fact, the missing woman seems to have no fear of making social connections via the internet which results in a lot of dead ends from an investigative pov.
As the authorities hone in on the evidence, the husband becomes the clear suspect. Nutty and controling beyond description and totally devoid of basic social skills, he has CREEP written all over him. The core of this story focuses on the husband and his consistently peculiar and controlling behavior, his continual contradictory statements, and how his presumed perception of his peculiar 'genius' and his inherent arrogance really does him in on a lot of levels. Despite not having any physical evidence such as a body to prove that a murder took place, the autorities bring te husband to trial. In the end, the case is resolved in an odd and somewhat unpredictable way.
The author Henry Lee is a local Oakland reporter and this is his first book. It is well-written and meticulously detailed. The end result is that very little, if anything, is left unanswered.
This is an interesting book that has its share of cliches, but the actual facts and circumstances surrounding this case lack a certain amount of suspense because the husband's inherent nature points to him early on.

Thoroughly interesting!

When I was a Bay Area resident, I had followed this case as it played out - at the time, Nina Reiser's body hadn't been found yet. It wasn't until years later that the case was finally resolved. I was happy to see a book written about the case, and by a local reporter, no less! It's chock full of details that we regular Joe-Schmo citizens aren't normally privy to, and it covered a lot of different angles. I appreciated the written style of the book, in the sense that it didn't sugarcoat or try to "fluff up" the story - real life is stranger than fiction, as they say. A solid read - and I'm hoping the author will write more about other big Bay Area cases that he has covered.

I did not know of this case before I read the book. It was intriguing and I could not put the book down. I had to know what happened to Nina and if they found her body. I will suggest this for our book club. The author Henry Lee did a great job.

A point among many when studying Greek and other languages--this one only of a starting read of Greek defined...

I believe this version of the language is Attica, not equal-and-some of the still-Athenian. There have dedicated users of both, but Attican pretty much anymore has won its case, so to speak. Though both Sophocles and those who followed the search for mans meaning and not just their pantheon of deities has yet to be published more often. This discordance among earlier Greeks doesn't keep the Attica version sharing seats, one would say, I'm sure. Attica modes remind one of the more recent and French revolutions, though with little violence and like Britons being attacked by Normans in the 11th century A. D. -- That was a struggle with vernacular against leaders speaking French and its
Courtship concepts. Out of that came Middle English. So, this language is a translation language, yet remember that as an example, when Rome abbreviated the common man's Latin from the Northern Laitian, they were less complicated in all that they both fought and allied. An example of the conjugation of what we more recently have now in Roman Latin, SEAPE COGITARE -- often I think about it -- the first word is Often, the second is Cognition, or your brain and spirit, whatever and where the word is cognition and writer is cognative with the I or the E at the end of the 2nd word. Some would say that it reads that Apollo looks after him. Either way, but when studying such as Greek and Roman, bear in mind what they believed then and what their cultures and politics was like.

I was hoping for a dictionary with many more words. Of course, this would require twice the size. And I haven't learned all these words.

Spending time at Ladybug Farm

Nobody creates a sense of place like Donna Ball. Even though Ladybug isn't one of Donna's cozy mysteries or suspenseful science fantasies, she has drawn me in with that rambling old house in Blue Valley. I love how Cici, Bridget and Lindsay rediscover themselves and strengthen their friendship as they restore the house and reinvent the farm.

This is the type of book that makes you kick back, relax, smile and remember (or perhaps discover) the joy and value of nature, community and friendship. And these days, any time spent at Ladybug Farm is time well spent.

Different From Her Others

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down and I read it in one sitting. It was very different than Donna's other books.

Three middle aged women pool their resources and buy an old farm house in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

I loved reading about their lives and struggles. The descriptions of the house and land made me feel like I was there. This author knows her craft and you won't be disappointed.

Lightweight, predictable but entertaining in your hammock

War and Peace, it ain't. Heck, I don't think it would favorably compare to bubblegum works like Briget Jones or The Jane Austen book club, but there is something cute about this novel. Perhaps it's just a fondness for ladybugs, but I was able to overlook some serious problems in the characterization and storytelling. My main pet peeve, apart from the way the book is wrapped up, is that the author spends a great deal of time telling us how smart, wonderful, funny and special these three women are but not a whole lot of time showing us that by their actions. Would exceptionally smart and saavy women have gotten themselves into the situation in the first place? Better if the characters had been shown to be more flawed, more gullible, more moved by a desire to run away and take a last big fling - then their decisions would have made sense in the universe the author created.

Again, if you are looking for a book that is heavy on the "Sisters are doing it for themselves" vibe and you want something quick and mindless for your days in the hammock, then give it a try.

Don't know what Bunco is? Don't need to!

Roll the dice with the Bunco Babes of Whispering Bay. The book opens with the main character giving up her childhood crush on Crash Davis, but very quickly remembering why she's loved him for so long when Steve the Plumber walks into her house. He's got charm, wit, and a touch of bad boy that makes her weak in the knees.

This book is shelved in General Fiction, but it is contemporary romance at its finest. It's laugh out loud funny. Kitty is one of the most realistic fictional characters I've ever read and you immediately sympathize with her. That sympathy grows as the story develops.

Geraci does a fantastic job in her debut novel and I for one can't wait for the follow up, BUNCO BABES GONE WILD!

just delightful

I picked up the book on Saturday and didn't put it down until I'd finished in the wee hours of Sunday morning. What a treat! Reading the novel, you feel as if you're among friends -- almost as if you'd joined the Bunco Babes for one of their Thursday night fiestas (complete with signature drinks and tasty gossip). The characters are adorable and real, the romance (and the sex) is hot, and the story moves at just the right pace to keep you guessing and keep you turning the page.

Loved it and will definitely be reading the sequel. I met the author at a book signing in Athens, GA and was not surprised to find that she was just as much fun as I imagined Kitty, Pilar, and Shea to be.

This book is incrediblly written. As unfortunate as the March story is, it depicts how the truth is stranger than fiction. The authors do an incredible job painting the landscape of the history of Nashville into the present day story. It is very well researched and a must read for anyone who is interested in the dark side of the human condition and crime mysteries.

As a native Tennessean, it would be nearly impossible to not have some knowledge of this famous crime. Although I don't usually read true crime books, I was intrigued by the subject. There is so much history of Nashville and insight to the case, I found the book very hard to put down. I think it is a must read for any Tennessean.
