Like reading a cloud

Marketing this novel as a thriller (or even a romantic comedy combined with a thriller) is seriously misleading. The Chase is too cute for its own good -- certainly too cute for readers who are looking for a plausible story. The Chase is so over-the-top that I was unable to buy into the plot or the characters. The cheesy banter between Kate and Nicolas, meant to be witty and suggestively sexual, seems designed to appeal to preteens. The Chase is intended as light reading, but it's so fluffy and insubstantial I felt like I was reading a cloud.

Special Agent Kate O'Hare is chasing the dreamy Nicolas Fox and not just because she would like to cuddle up against his lean and firm body. Fox seems to have robbed a bank but, as O'Hare knows, he has stolen from a safe deposit box at the FBI's direction to obtain evidence because the FBI is apparently unwilling or unable to get a warrant to search for it. The crime (the details of which are left unexplained) is ridiculous and O'Hare should go to prison for having any part in it. How she manages to reconcile her profound sense of law-and-order with her willingness to subvert the Constitution while being a party to a bank robbery is something Evanovich doesn't explain. I have difficulty cheering for a hypocrite who fails to recognize her own hypocrisy, and O'Hare's self-righteous justification for breaking the law (repeatedly) doesn't endear me to her.

Now the FBI needs O'Hare to commit a crime that's even more ridiculous: stealing a bronze rooster from the highly placed man who bought it from the thief who stole it from the Smithsonian. The man is so highly placed (think Karl Rove) that the FBI doesn't want to "embarrass" the country by arresting him. Eventually yet another theft needs to be orchestrated and the novel turns into a low-budget version of Ocean's Eleven. Unfortunately, the method used to commit the crime is far from innovative and not even remotely credible.

Evanovich works so hard to make O'Hare "tough but feminine" and Fox "devious but charming" that both characters seem inauthentic. They fit nicely into their stereotyped boxes but they lack believable personalities. O'Hare's "I just got stabbed and killed my assailant -- let's have champagne!" attitude wears thin quickly. The chemistry between the smitten FBI agent and the rakish conman with "lightly tousled" hair is utterly predictable and, for that reason, uninteresting. The villain is about as deep as Snidely Whiplash.

The parts of the novel that are meant to be funny failed to amuse me, but I often chuckled at parts that were not intended to provoke laughter (O'Hare's superdad carries hand grenades in his golf bag and the Karl Rove character, no longer in government, can instantly launch a predator drone armed with Hellfire missiles within the United States by making a phone call). Much of the novel is just too easy for O'Hare and Fox ("oh, don't worry, the secret door won't be guarded") and too many things that shouldn't be easy (like stealing from safe deposit boxes) are glossed over without explanation. Part of the novel takes place in China but it might as well be Kansas City. The local color sounds like it was cribbed from a tourism website. Evanovich does better when she describes the high-end outlet mall in Camarillo, California, a place she has apparently been. The ending is even more preposterous than the story that precedes it. The story moves quickly and parts of it are fun, but there are not enough of those parts to recommend the novel as a whole.

Snakes On A Train

I've always been a fan of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt and NUMA Files adventures, and THE CHASE is the same kind of story. There's a larger-than-life hero who faces impossible challenges and is viciously injured but gets right up. There are fast cars, a discreet liaison with a beautiful woman, loyal associates, and big transportation (in this case trains rather than boats). Oh, and a sociopathic villain.

All that's to the good. Of course we also have writing from the Hardy Boys school of literature and fantastic plot elements. That's no surprise and if you're a fan, you just read around it. Here's an example of an overloaded sentence from the beginning of Chapter 15:

"Cromwell's chauffeur drove the 1906 Rolls-Royce Brougham, made by the London coach maker Barker, with its six-cylinder, thirty-horsepower engine, from the garage to the front of the palatial Nob Hill mansion Cromwell had designed himself and constructed from white marble blocks cut and hauled by railroad from a quarry in Colorado."

Hmmm ... anyone got a red pencil?

The hero is one Isaac Bell, an independently wealthy private detective. The villain is a bank robber-murderer known as "the Butcher Bandit." Bell, through hot detective work and breathtaking good luck, gets on the trail of the Bandit by page 168 (of 404). The rest of the book -- the better half -- involves a lot of fast driving, a locomotive race, some shooting and robbing, and the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Oh, and of course a satisfactory ending.

THE CHASE does have a structural device that kicks it up a notch. While the story takes place in 1906, the book opens and closes with a 1950 underwater salvage operation in a large Montana lake. This is reminiscent of James Cameron's 1997 movie TITANIC, and was a very nice touch.

Cussler's at his best with the action scenes, and THE CHASE has some epic action. The train scenes really are playing to his strength. The story is according to formula but the formula works: familiar and therefore safe style, combined with wild action. This is a very satisfactory offering from Cussler and if you like this kind of book, you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.

I was left constantly wanting more

I find myself unsure of how to rate/review this one. I like the entire premise of this new series, but it’s missing something. I mean, this really could be a great television show. Its ultra fast paced and the characters are snarky funny. I did suffer a bit from geographic schizophrenia though. They travel so much in this one book they earned platinum card status. There was just so much crammed in.

Kate and Nic make a great team and them working together is pure gold. But it really is lacking emotionally. I didn’t feel connected to them. I was left constantly wanting more. More emotion. More intimacy. More sizzle. Just more.

I told a friend, it read like a good script but didn’t have the depth I want from a book. I then learned later that Evanovichs’ co writer also writes for television. Yep, that explains it now.

I dunno guys I am rating it 3.5 because I did find it funny and entertaining. Overall though it was a bit meh :(

This novel bursts with joy. The characters are bold, bright and just laugh out loud funny.

Looking for a book that is hilarious, outrageous and guaranteed to perk up your day? If you aren't familiar with Sandra Hill's exuberant humor then you are in for a treat. She writes light hearted books that really transport the reader into a world you wished you could inhabit. Her characters are a hoot and the heroes in particular are so hunky! In Dark Viking, she continues her Navy SEALs, time travel Viking series.

In this novel saucy stuntwoman Rita Sawyer is recruited into the new WEALs (Woman on Earth, Air, Land, and Sea). While in the grueling training camp Rita in scuba gear she is suddenly transported in time. When she wakes up she finds herself caged in a place that looks like an old Viking village. The head honcho named Steven dubs her the ugly Sea Siren. He states she is dangerous and keeps insisting they are Vikings. Rita is sure someone is playing a joke on her but she isn't one to be pushed around.

Steven of Norstead is depressed. As the last of his noble Viking line he has great responsibility for 2 Viking estates. He used to be happy and carefree but when his brother Thorfinn disappeared life lost its appeal. When out on his longboat Steven discovers a strange female monster and immediately cages this treacherous creature. But when this 'Ree-tah' takes off her outerwear he is dazzled by her beauty. However, he still does not trust her and her eccentric ways. But when she mentions a man that she met similar to him named Thorfinn Steven is determined to discover what she knows and find Thorfinn again.

This novel bursts with joy. The characters are bold, bright and just laugh out loud funny. I loved the indomitable and spunky Rita. She has a lot of grit and doesn't let a brawny and sexy Viking push her around. The jokes in the story are just so original and corny that you have to love them. The hero Steven had some surprising depth as he really feels the burden of responsibility since his brother was lost and misses his brother dearly. I loved Steven's befuddlement with his `Ree-tah' and how he sets seducing her with his confident charm. The only quibble I have with the story is the rather abrupt ending and how stubborn Steven is at confessing he cares for Rita. But for sheer joy and laughter this book hits right at the funny bone and will lift your spirits.

The author's special brand of humor, wit and sensuality make her books something to look forward to after a long day. Dark Viking is no exception. I loved it!

5 Hearts from TRS!

I was hooked from the first page when Rita's athleticism was showcased and couldn't put down the book. Her self-confidence carried her through trying times as she tried to adapt to Steven's culture. Steven had been depressed over the loss of his brother, Thorfinn (Viking Unchained). When his people found Ree-tah, dressed in a wetsuit and passed out on their shore, Steven felt a spark of something even though he wasn't sure what kind of sea monster she might be. I loved their conversations as they tried to figure out what brought Rita to the past and how she would be protected from the King. The secondary characters added to the plot and were interesting characters all by themselves. The sideline story about Steven's sister shows promise for a future book. For all the humor in the book I thought the ending was very sweet and emotional. Dark Viking has it all - great characters, funny dialogue, engaging plot, and heartwarming romance. - Lisa Freeman

Couldn't get past one issue... *spoiler in review*

I laughed throughout the whole thing except one part.....the whole dog collar leash scene! Ugh! the heroine herself was disgusted and was depressed that he was treating her like a dog. I get the whole male dominant but usually these heroines are pretty strong characters who can handle these guys. The fact that no apology/amends/discussion was ever brought up. The heroine completely forgot about it, as if it never happened. Yet we read for quite a few pages how she hates it and it's humiliating for her. Really made me upset and was all i could think about for the rest of the story. Even as they get their HEA, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

What a tear jerker! Maggie Shayne has always been one of my favorite authors and "Melting Frosty" showcases just why her books remain on my keeper shelves. Holly is the ideal woman to melt Matthew's cold heart and I couldn't help but cheer her on every step of the way. The inclusion of the black fedora hat is ideal and adds a touch of mystique to this aptly named tale. "Melting Frosty" shows that every action in the universe has a meaning if only one looks for it, just as Holly does.

In "Charlotte's Web", Erin McCarthy introduces readers to a witch in denial about her powers. Charlotte Murphy comes from a family of witches but she wants to celebrate Christmas the traditional way. She has loved her friend Will Thornton for years, but does he reciprocate her feelings?

Erin McCarthy always writes a charming tale and "Charlotte's Web" is no exception. Fans of her Vegas Vampires series will note that "Charlotte's Web" is a bit spicier, focusing more on the sensuality than the humor. Bree, Charlotte's sister, is an interesting secondary character and actually intrigued me far more than Charlotte did. Perhaps Bree will get her own tale?

"Beat of Temptation" by Nalini Singh is part of her Psy-Changeling series. Tamsyn Mahaire is the Healer of the DarkRiver pack, an unusually high position for one so young. The mating bond between Tamsyn and Nate Ryder snapped into place when Tamsyn was only fifteen years old. Now, at age nineteen, Tamsyn is ready to claim Nate for her own... or lose him forever.

An Enchanted Season is a romantic collection of holiday paranormals with sugar and just a bit of spice.

"Melting Frosty" by Maggie Shayne. (5 stars)This was my favorite story of the four, it fit the magical romance theme perfectly. Fate and possibly loved ones from the great beyond conspire to bring Matt and Holly together for Christmas. At first glance Matt and Holly seem to have little in common - Matt is a cynic who avoids attachments and Holly approaches life with joy and faith. But they not only feel an instant connection with each other but discover that they have both survived tragic losses as children. I couldn't help but root for Holly and Matt to both find what they were missing in life and couldn't wait to see if Holly's zest for life and a little Christmas spirit could bring love back into Matt's life

"Charlotte's Web" by Erin McCarthy,(4 stars) set in the same town as her Heiress For Hire and A Date with the Other Side (Berkley Sensation). Charlotte and Will have had a close platonic relationship for years. Both are secretly in love with the other, but afraid to take a chance at expressing their deeper feelings for fear of ruining their friendship. But when Charlotte discovers that her family wasn't kidding about witchy powers being hereditary, Charlotte knows just the spell to cast. - This is one of my favorite themes, best friends longing for more and McCarthy really had the two more-than-friends sizzling as Charlotte and Will take the chance at moving their relationship to a new level.

"Beat of Temptation" by Nalini Singh. (5 stars) I love Singh's Psy-Changeling series. This story is a prequel to Slave to Sensation (The Psy-Changelings, Book 1)and a more than respectable addition to the series, very well fleshed out even in this short format. Changelings Sentinel Nate and Healer Tamsyn are mates and are reoccurring characters in the series. Nate has yet to claim Tami, he's much older and wants to give her time to grow up. But after fours years Tami is all woman, fully ready to make the leap and she begins to think that while his leopard knows she's his mate, the man doesn't want her. But Nate doesn't realize how much his lack of commitment is torturing Tami, and if he's not careful he may just lose her forever.

"Gift of the Magi" by Jean Johnson. (3 stars) Not as romantic as the other stories, since Steve and Rachel are already in love. But Steve and his fiancé Rachel have let their troubles get in the way of their relationship as they are are in danger of going under financially and losing the bed and breakfast that has been in Steve's family for generations. But when three strangers come to stay Christmas Eve at the pair's Inn, Steve and Rachel find that even if they need a little help, they already have the greatest gift, each other. If you trimmed the love scenes to get a PG-13, this story would be right at home in Reader's Digest, it has that uplifting angels-among-us quality to it.

I would have bought this book for Singh's story alone, I am a huge fan of the Psy-Changeling series, so the stories by Shayne and McCarthy were just added bonuses. This was a nice light romantic read, perfect if you are in the mood for some mistletoe magic.

She had my eyes watering by page three of her story and the waterworks never really stopped after that. I don't truly know which touched me more - Matt's despair or Holly's hope. Both were palpable in their intensity and made for an unforgettable and heart-warming read.

Beat of Temptation follows very admirably in that vein. While it is technically the fourth story in the series, the fact that it is a prequel makes it easy to read out of series order, granting newcomers the chance to sample this talented author's work without first needing to read the other books in the series. Of course, I fully expect anyone who reads Beast of Temptation will rush right out to purchase all of the other books in this series.

The first in this saga to mate two Changelings together rather than a Changeling with a Psy, this tale was no less fascinating for it. In fact, watching Tammy and Nate's denied lust for each other escalate into uncontrollable passion made for some extremely powerful scenes that defy the reader to put the book down until the story's end.

Throughout it all, we still enjoy glimpses of the Psy world as they plot against the Changeling packs for their own financial gain.

Fans of the Psy/Changeling series will adore this glimpse into Nate and Tammy's past, and new fans will find it an excellent entry point to this mesmerizing world.

But the blizzard brings some very unusual miracles, too...

Jean Johnson is a new author for me. I found her story, Gifts of the Magi to be just as spellbinding and emotional as the other stories in An Enchanted Season! Truly, Ms. Johnson easily holds her own in this roster of very talented authors and is a writer I will be looking for more from in the future.

In her story, she brings us the gift of miracles large and small - some magical and some simply born of the human spirit. These miracles will stay in my heart for a long time to come and I daresay will have me considering people in real life a little differently from now on.

Not all of Sunny Randall's cases have been personal, but this one, her sixth, raises the average. Her on-again, off-again romance with her ex-husband is on again in a big way. And she's working an investigation with her father, Phil, an ec-cop lured from retirement by a slayer using the same modus operandi (coins left on beautiful female corpses) as the serial killer he hunted 30 years before. Parker's snappy dialogue keeps the story moving along. Burton is too smart to let Sunny slip into girliness when she's chatting with her beloved dad or her ultraromantic ex-husband, and she never makes her too cute or too tough in her cat-and-mouse encounters with the man she's certain is the Spare Change Killer. Instead, Burton maintains Sunny's professional edge, using subtle shifts of phrasing or timing to indicate the emotions the sleuth is keeping under wraps. She is just as successful in finding the right voices for the other main characters: flirtatious and sinister for the prime suspect in pursuit of Sunny; and gruff frustration for Phil Randall, who is worried for his daughter's safety.

Parker, also responsible for the classic Spenser mystery series and the Jesse Stone novels, continues to add depth to his characterization of Randall as he explores her often contradictory feelings about love. Parker's ruminations on romance are sometimes--not always--wearisome, but he never fails to entertain with humor and recurring characters whom we welcome back into our lives like old friends. Inspiring Hope for Christians

I didn't read the subtitle closely enough. I was expecting this book to expand upon what he saw when he went to heaven, but as I started reading it I noticed that that was not the purpose of this book. This one talks about how his life has changed since his 90 minutes in heaven. The issues he brings up help you to examine your own life.

The bridge is the analogy he uses throughout the book, i.e., in his case his life changed forever once he crossed a bridge that led to his accident. Even small choices affect our lives he points out. One of the themes he keeps coming back to is that touching other people's lives is validating in that God intends for us to serve other people. We need other people and they need us. Piper said it was easier for him to serve than be served, but a hard lesson he accepted in regaining meaning to his life was in learning to let other people serve him.

For people going through difficult times that permanently change who they are, Piper offers well-thought out advice. He encourages them to accept the new realities and not try to go back to a past that will never exist again.

He tells a story about a commencement speaker who asked the graduates "Do you want to be remembered for what you did for yourself--how much money you made, the kind of car you drove, the size of the house you lived in? Or do you want people to remember what you did for others--your kindness and compassion; your generosity of time, money, and spirit; the testimony you freely shared to bring others to Christ?"

This book accomplishes its goal of helping readers to reflect on what their time on this earth is really about. Building a spiritual legacy is the life well-lived.

Powerful - touching - great writing

I picked this book up before a long cross-country flight. I could not stop reading it. I actually finished it between Phoenix and Charlotte!

The best description I can give you of this book is that the author puts you there - in the scenes with him. Not many writers can pull that off effectively.

When he describes the accident scene where he is covered in a sheet, and his friend is pleading with the officer to uncover him because he is alive - you feel as though you are right there, wanting to tap the officer on the shoulder and say - "Give him a chance."

When he describes the physical beauty of heaven and the streets literally of translucent gold, you just feel like you are surrounded by the brilliance of the moment.

Christians will be very touched by the "realness" of this perspective. That Heaven does exist, that our loved ones will welcome us, and that the peace and happiness you feel is beyond all human understanding.

Be prepared to be touched, laugh a little, get choked up a couple of times, and generally enjoy this unique and fascinating walk we will all take someday.

On February 13, 2003, I almost died, during brain tumor surgery. An operation that was supposed to take four hours, took 8 ½ hours, due to bleeding in my brain. I am blessed, and feel I was saved, for a reason. Any time I have an opportunity, to talk with anyone that is going to be going through brain surgery, I go out of my way, to share my experience, with the patient, and their family. I firmly believe, that no Doctor can get a brain tumor patient, prepared, for what they are going to go through, better than I can. NOTE 1: If you read my prior review on Don's earlier book "90 Minutes In Heaven." I have written the same personal biography as above. The reason I have done this, is to establish my credibility, as a "witness" to my comments regarding this book. Just as important as offering my experience before surgery, my tutelage, as to what to expect after surgery, is even more important. That phase of life on earth; the after, is what the heart of Don's story is about.

After losing a loved one. After losing physical, or mental capabilities, that is where Don's experience is most helpful, and he encourages people who have lived through experiences like mine, to make their time and experience available, to ease the suffering of patients, and their family members. But! Only Don, can give the comfort of what heaven is like for the departed. NOTE 2. I strongly recommend that you read Don's book: "90 Minutes In Heaven." before this book. The impact, of this book, will be greater for the reader, when you see the tremendous growth in Don himself, due to his acceptance, of why he was brought back to earth.

Perhaps the most important statement made in this book, is about accepting the "NEW NORMAL". You can't dwell on the way things used to be. You have to do everything you can to accept, and regroup, to what you're left with. And one last thing: Make sure you let your loved ones help you! They've been traumatized also, and the only way they can feel as if they're heeling is by helping you.

don't waste your time

I read the first chapter of this book on Amazon and thought it sounded like a well-written, intriguing story, so I purchased the book. Too bad the rest of the book didn't live up to the promise of the first chapter.

The good parts about this book were that
1. the story is just interesting enough to keep you reading to find out what's going on
2. the descriptions (houses, clothes, etc.) are fairly well written
3. parts of this book really have a spooky atmosphere that befits its setting of a decrepit Southern plantation well.

However, overall I found that the story was full of plot holes and could be quite confusing to follow in places. Sometimes events were brought up in the story that needed an explanation, but with no explanations given I ended up feeling like big pieces of the story were missing. For instance, at the end of the first chapter the heroine says, "That night I dreamed of Eve for the first time in many years." You'd expect that the heroine might then explain who Eve is, or what kind of dreams she used to have about Eve, or why she finds it weird to dream about a woman called Eve, but there is nothing! She doesn't talk about Eve at all, so it's hard to empathize with her when she finds out who Eve really is. These gaps in the background of the story made it hard to know what was supposed to be shocking to the characters, and it made it hard to care about the characters, too.

The best part of the book comes when the heroine explores the house on the hill, but after that the story goes downhill, right to its muddled and confusing ending. Overall, a book not really worth the time.

Sultry, Evocative Southern Gothic

Sarah Bryant's lushly gothic novel is set at an antebellum home in Louisiana, and despite the size of it (459 pp.) I positively flew through the book.

The book begins with twin sisters Eve and Elizabeth switching identities so that one may marry the man she loves. Having traded identities so often in childhood, with nary a suspicion from their parents, they figure switching for a mere bridegroom will be no problem at all. With lightning flashing and thunder rumbling in the background, they complete the exchange of the wedding dress and the sisters' identifying necklaces.

A generation later Eleanor Rose, the daughter/niece of Eve and Elizabeth, is plagued by recurrent nightmares about her mother and aunt. In all her dreams both women are in dire peril at the hands of a mysterious man, and both call desperately for her help. Strangely, it's her aunt Eve who seems to be appealing to her most desperately in her dreams, a fact she can't quite reconcile. Why is it her aunt Eve and not her mother?

Eleanor, raised by her grandfather, is an indulged and privileged child who's also a prodigy on the piano. Her grandfather takes her to music concerts where she hears the greats play. At one of these concerts she sees Alexander Trevozhov perform. She's immediately smitten.

On the death of her grandfather Eleanor learns she's inherited the family's land and home in Louisiana, so leaves Boston with her companion, Mary, to live on the estate. As soon as she arrives she gets a chill. The place itself is beautiful but menacing, in a way she can't quite understand. Bryant's writing here is lush and lovely:

"Over the years of disuse, the rampant foliage had nearly swallowed the house. Bougainvillea, ivy and kudzu hung in swaying curtains from the roof, tangling with honeysuckle and roses climbing from below. ... Beautiful as the house was - or rather, would be, with some care - I felt repulsion at that first sight of it."

Eleanor moves into one of the smaller houses on the estate, as Eden House is in such a state of disrepair. She is immediately plagued by insomnia. Already pale and wan following the sudden loss of her beloved grandfather, she becomes even more sickly looking. Not long thereafter a man arrives to rent one of the houses on the property. The man is none other than Alexander Trevozhov, arriving with is niece Natalya. Coincidence or orchestration, you may ask? Well, some things are best not revealed!

Trevozhov appears somewhat aloof and mocking at first, but soon warms to Eleanor. He reveals that he, too, has been having strange dreams and their fates seem inexplicably intertwined. He's able to recite specifics from her dreams, a fact that leaves Eleanor baffled. Who, exactly, is this Alexander Trevozhov, and how does he know the details of the dreams that terrify her?

Eleanor begins exploring Eden House. Locked doors become unlocked, and unlocked doors are suddenly fast closed, as she wanders through the big house. Her feeling of unease mounts, despite her vain attempts to rationalize the things happening around her. A piano she originally found under a dustcover, unused for ages, begins playing a familiar piece when there's apparently no one in the house but herself. Eleanor begins to feel she's losing her grip. Is there truly a legacy of insanity in her family?

Enter Dorian Ducoeur, a former friend of the family who knew both Eve and Elizabeth, and things really start to heat up. Dorian, Eleanor discovers, is one of the figures from her nightmares. Alexander's back is immediately up. He doesn't trust this man and makes no bones about it. Who is Dorian Ducoeur, really, and what does Alexander really know? Apparently he knows more than he's at first willing to reveal.

Telling much more would be spoiling the rest of the plot. Suffice to say there are more delightfully mysterious house rambles to come, more lush, beautifully-written descriptions of the wonderfully gothic Eden House, and even a death or two for good measure. There are also more shocking revelations, and many more layers added to the tale of Elizabeth and Eve, before all is said and done.

Heavily influenced by the gothic classic _Jane Eyre_, Sarah Bryant's strength is in her descriptions. She imagines a nicely complex plot, but her slips into melodrama are her weakness. However, with writing so atmospheric and evocative of the steamy Deep South the reader can forgive her the occasional slip into purple prose.

On the strength of this effort I would most definitely read another book by Bryant. Despite its length _The Other Eden_ demands you read it at a gallop. There's no slowing down as each element is revealed, peeling away the layers of the mystery and simultaneously building the suspense to nearly unbearable proportions. You won't want to stop until the last page is turned. As a good summer read I would very highly recommend _The Other Eden_.

A Rising Literary Star

I have just read MS. Bryant's novel THE OTHER EDEN. I was skeptical at first - concerned that would only appeal to women. I couldn't have been more wrong! Her sophisticated knowledge of music and the intriguing interplay of characters and plot captured me instantly and kept me reading. I have referred this fine book and the author to many friends - both male and female. The response has been universally positive. I look forward to the next book by Bryant. A reader in Rhode Island

Marguerite Gachet, accustomed to her father's revolving door of artist patients (Cezanne, Pissarro, Bernard among them), finds herself enamored of the disheveled Van Gogh ("a rare blend of vulnerability and bravado") shortly after his arrival at her father's home in Auvers, where Van Gogh undergoes treatment for his manifold illnesses. Though Marguerite is little more than a servant to her father, a failed painter turned physician who prides himself to an absurd extent on his art collection, she manages, with the help of her cloistered half-sister, to begin a covert flirtation with Van Gogh. Between sitting—thrice—for Van Gogh and carrying on her household duties, Marguerite uncovers a family secret and has a clandestine rendezvous with the painter. Though Marguerite's frustrated love is carefully rendered, other characters are mostly memorable for their quirks (her father, the failed painter; her brother, the goofy sycophant; her half-sister, the gold-hearted sage). The climax may be a bit breathless, but, then again, Van Gogh isn't remembered for his subtlety. (Oct.)

Vincent van Gogh ends his life in a French village under the care of Dr. Gachet, who treats his patients and himself with holistic concoctions of herbs. Gachet's daughter, Marguerite, lives a circumscribed life of domestic duties in a rather peculiar household. She finds joy in her garden and her music and, upon the arrival of Van Gogh, the excitement that his presence brings. To her father's dismay, she is the one the painter seeks as a model, rather than her more favored brother. Marguerite serves as narrator, and though unschooled and naive, her passion and clarity shine through. She finds love, but it is not destined for a happy ending. Marguerite does achieve a sort of immortality through Van Gogh's portraits of her, but except for the secret that she holds close, her life is lonely and bereft. Richman captures the flavor of the period and the nature of her characters in a story that will appeal to many. Danise Hoover

I might have had a slight curiosity about the Post Impressionist painter that cut off his ear. But reading this historical novel peaked my interest. Ms. Richman's writing got me so caught up in the story that I found my self looking up every painting mentioned. I even went as far as to try and match specific descriptive passages to specific paintings, drawings, etc. The description of Mr. Van Gogh's suffering and his need to complete each painting was made so real to me. This novel has left a lasting impression.

I loved this book

This book grabbed me at the beginning and held me until the very end.
I wanted this book to continue.
Part of this novel's charm is the fact that this absolutely could have happened.
A novel is not supposed to be dry and fact based although this is loosely based on the last days of Van Gogh.
The best thing to do is just to let go and enjoy it. It's a good read with characters that are well fleshed out.
For those seeking unadulterated historical truth...read a Van Gogh biography.
