Review
"Excuse me while I gush like a fangirl. I was so afraid that Beloved Vampire, while starting out with a bang, would eventually fade into mediocrity like so many books. Not at all. As the book progressed, it just got better and better, until it is now officially one of my favorite (if not the favorite) vampire romances....Mason and Jessica are the most well-written, psychologically coherent characters I've read in a long time...This is essentially the erotica of my dreams....While there are explicit scenes, to simply call this book erotica would be severely shortchanging the story. This book is predominantly a story of two hurting souls finding each other and slowly learning to trust the world again...Read Beloved Vampire, even if you think you're sick to death of vampires. You won't regret it. The story is so sensual, so romantic. I'm envious of the fact that I'll never get that first-time excitement again. Desert Isle Keeper. Grade: A"

Jessica Tyson finds herself in the middle of the Sahara desert looking for the tomb of a woman who died centuries ago. Farida's journal has kept Jessica sane through five years of torture from her former vampire master. She was partially third marked so she doesn't look like the 29 year old woman she is, she looks frail and is dying but she is determined to find Farida's tomb before she dies. She wants to die with her fantasy of the girl and her lover Lord Mason. The fantasy that has kept her alive this long, of a Djinn and his love for a slave girl so very long ago. She wants to find the tomb prove she was right, there is a love that can survive all, even death, for legend says that the Djinn to this day guards Farida's tomb and never lets harm come to his beloved.

When Jessica does manage to get to the tomb she finds not a Djinn waiting for her but a very ticked off vampire. He's mad that his beloved's resting place is disturbed. Jessica just wants to die now; her last dream has been shattered. Only once Lord Mason finds Jessica he is not so willing to let her go. Can she stand being bound yet again to a vampire? Even a kind one? One that saves her from death only to enslave her to himself? Will Jessica choose death over continuous torture again? And can Lord Mason's love bring her back from the hell she was in?

Joey W. Hill has a very complicated and intricate tale of love, loss and finding your soul again in Beloved Vampire. Jessica is a strong woman. She is on the verge of death and crawls on her hands and knees to find the woman's tomb that has held her sanity together all these years. She has been tortured almost beyond sanity. Can Lord Mason's love bring her all the way back from the hell she has lived? Lord Mason is a complicated vampire. He has a soul, conscious and heart that will make the readers fall in love with him. He wants to do the right thing, but Jessica is a very broken woman, and doing the right thing is very hard to do with her. How can you help someone when the help you give them drives them over the brink of sanity?

I found this novel to be very intense and very multi-layered. This is not a light read; this is a novel to pick up when you have some time. There are some situations that some readers might find objectionable, such as, but not limited to BDSM, torture and things that allude to many past horrors. I highly recommend taking the time to really read Beloved Vampire. I think you will fall in love with the characters as much as I have. This is the fourth in the Vampire Queen series, but can be read alone and enjoyed. I highly recommend reading the entire series, though, it really should not be missed. If you love your romance to be angst-ridden and extremely emotionally charged you really need to pick up Beloved Vampire by Joey W. Hill, you will not be disappointed.

Fantastic!

Jessica Tyson is heading towards her death. She's spent the last five years under the thumb of a sadistic vampire. She's on the run and ready to be done with this life looking for a final resting place of a woman who's ancient journals have given her a thread of sanity through her ordeal.

When she's unexpectedly rescued, she is not sure if she'll ever have the ability to be whole again, let alone love.

Lord Mason still hasn't recovered from the loss of his wife but Jessica touches something in him like no one has in many years.

This is another (stand alone) story in Joey Hill's incredible Vampire series and this is my absolute favorite so far. It's a very intense story as Jessica has had some terrible abuse that is seen in flashback's but it's also a very moving story about faith, hope and the power of love.

There are some very special scenes with some of the characters of her previous stories, Lady Lyssa and Jacob and Lady Dani and Dev. A very moving and powerful story that I highly recommend.

Unique and fantastic
By Avid Reading in NV
Jess was stolen by a corrupt and cruel vampire 5 yrs ago. Forced to do unspeakable things and endure horrible torture she is quite traumatized. The only thing that got her through these five years is a diary she found depicting the love and life of Farida and Mason. When opportunity presents itself Jess is able to kill the cruel vampire that had held her hostage for so long. Wanting to complete one thing before she dies she heads to the Sahara to see Farida's burial site. On her deathbed from killing her previous master she makes it to Farida's eternal resting place. What she didn't expect to find was Mason and the fact he is a vampire. Unable to let her go Mason mark's her as his servant in order to grant her a chance at a real life. Flashing back in forth between Farida's journal and Jess' POV this is an incredible story of love lost and new love beginning. Understandably Jess has a hard time accepting what a severant life is suppose to be and that most vampires are not abusive. Being an erotic novel, it isn't what i expected, the erotica parts is mostly hearing what Jess went through and what Mason wants to do with her. There aren't that many scenes with Jess and Mason actually together having sex. Not to say that it isn't sexy as hell, just in different ways.
I loved this book, loved the journey Jess and Mason went through. There were also apperances of Lyssa & Jacob and Dev & Danny.
Highly reccomend this novel

The most engaging, and delicious, Molly Pink so far.
By Judith L. Libby
I had great expectations for this fourth installment of the Molly Pink crochet mystery series, and I was not disappointed a bit. I especially liked the way Molly's relationships between her and Mason, and her and Barry, are developing. Her dealings with her sister (and fellow) crocheters/Hookers are deepening as well and in the most satisfying ways. Of course there is the mystery to play out, and it is fairly and intricately constructed and resolved. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the locale and the additional players, too. The wit of Molly is ever present. There is also no way I can read one of Betty Hechtman's books without wanting to enjoy the goodies she includes the recipes for at the end of the book. A really fun ride.

enjoyable amateur sleuth
By A Customer
Molly Pink works as an event coordinator at Shedd & Royal Books and More. Her boss Mrs. Shedd hands over her rhinestone clipboard placing Molly in charge of the "Get Out of the Heat and Light Your Creative Fire" retreat weekend on the Monterey Peninsula. Her employer's only admonition for Molly is not to get involved in a homicide investigation as is her inclination (see By Hook or Crook and Dead Men Don't Crochet).

Pink thinks that will prove no problem since a crafts retreat is an unlikely setting for a murder. She soon finds her theory wrong when one of the instructors, famous Izabella Landers is found on the beach. Rushed to the hospital she is dead from anaphylactic shock due to exposure to peanut butter that she is allergic to. Certain odd details make Molly wonder if a murder occurred even though the police believe a tragic accident happened; the coroner backs up the cops. Determined to find out whether her theory is correct, Molly almost gets killed too. Even more sure a killer is loose; Molly and the Tarzana Hookers investigate.

Betty Hechtman has written an enjoyable amateur sleuth featuring a likable lead protagonist who has reinvented herself one stitch at a time several years after her husband died. Although reckless, a bi-product of her spouse's death as she believes life is to be lived every moment one has and her late mate would admire her for doing so; that zest for taking chances adds to her charm. The whodunit is fun as the woman carrying the symbol of power, the rhinestone clipboard, searches for a killer who may not exist.

When Haley's manager offers Veronica a job as a celebrity double, it only takes a moment before she says yes. Veronica gets to drive Haley's car, wear her phenomenal clothes-and have fun with her hot celebrity boyfriend, Brady Ellis. But when real sparks fly with Brady, is it a fantasy come true or a disaster in disguise?

From Publishers Weekly
A divorced Orange County suburbanite's life gets a delicious jolt in Snow's superb romantic comedy. After Veronica Czaplicki's husband leaves her for a mega-rich realtor, she scrapes by, substitute teaching at her son Ben's elementary school and renting a guest house from an overbearing couple. In a fun twist of fate, Veronica's resemblance to young superstar Haley Rush (think: Miley Cyrus meets Lindsay Lohan) attracts Haley's manager, who offers Veronica $100 an hour to pretend to be Haley for photo ops. At first Veronica loves getting a makeover and dating Brady Ellis, Haley's hot ex-boyfriend and co-star. The good times, of course, can't last, and romantic treachery lurks. Snow (Here Today, Gone to Maui) turns what could've been just another single mom mope fest into a wonderfully witty reminder that celebrity always carries a price tag. (Apr.)

What it would be like to be Britney/Lindsay/Miley...
By Jenna Sue
I'll admit, I'm addicted to magazines like In Style, OK, US, etc., so when I saw this novel was about a woman being a body double for a Britney/Lindsay-esque singer/actress, I couldn't wait to read it. I wasn't disappointed. It was a sexy & addictive peek into what it's like to be a celeb in today's fame-obsessed culture. Even though it was fiction, I have a feeling author Carol Snow has connections in the industry because it definitely felt like some behind the scenes dirt. Very fun and dishy.

It tells the story of Veronica Czaplicki, a substitute teacher & mom whose husband has just dumped her. Veronica happens to look like Haley Rush, a star of a tween sitcom (think Hannah Montana). Veronica gets a job pretending to be Haley at red carpet & other events... and as a bonus, gets photo ops with sexy costar Brady Ellis. Sparks begin to fly between the two of them, and as a result, life starts to get messy for Veronica. Turns out, fame isn't easy.

There are so many great, laugh out loud scenes (including one involving getting a spray tan that was HILARIOUS). I also loved the relationship between Veronica and her son, and also how her new life complicated her life as a mom. Also, I thought I knew what was going to happen romance-wise, but there were so many twists & turns after a while I was just happy to hang on and see what happened.

This is definitely one of those books you can't put down once you start it. Highly recommend.

What was she thinking?!
By Kelly
I Hated this book, and wish someone on this site had warned me how awful it was. So on that note, here is my warning to anyone contemplating reading this book.

The main character, Veronica, starts out likable enough--a single mom struggling to make ends meet and still have time for her son and for herself. She seems fairly realistic, even if I don't understand her refusal to take a full-time teaching job just because it is at a school her son does not attend (she struggles financially because of her decision to wait around for a position to open up at his school, and in the long run this seems to be more of a detrimental decision for her child than taking a job at another school would be--I mean, she actually chooses to struggle rather than do what needs to be done to make things better for her and her son). But soon, she gets embroiled in the pseudo-celebrity world of Haley Rush, and dear God let the awful decision-making begin.

Now we get into some of my real issues. Veronica is supposed to be a mature, loving mother, yet at the first chance she is forgetting about her son and having sex in a car with a TOTAL STRANGER (just because you see someone on TV does not mean they are not a stranger, idiot!). She goes from being a moderately interesting character still picking up the pieces of her life (getting married far too young and for the wrong reason--read: pregnancy, not love, and subsequently getting divorced when her significantly-older-than-her husband leaves her for a significantly-older-than-both-of-them woman) to a poster child for Awful Mother and Poor Decisions. When Veronica is not busy showing up late to get her son, or forgetting him all together, she's fantasizing about a guy she knows nothing about and becoming totally shallow--obsessing about her hair and fake tan and clothes. In between all of this, the story drags on and on, with all kinds of boring filler happening, then she makes some more bad decisions, more boring filler, and then the end, which is completely unsatisfactory because the author spent no time developing the relationships between characters.

And don't get me started on Actual Haley Rush. She is the most bland train-wreck character I've ever come across. She spends most of her time sitting on her rear whining. She is a train wreck in that the author tells us she has a drinking/drug problem, family problems, and some mental problems (she tells us these things more so than shows us--and how about them calling her bulimic, but then constantly showing her shoving junk food down her throat with no purging occurring) but, like I said, Haley spends most of her time pretty sedentary. And can I just say, without spoilers, I have no idea why Haley's romantic hookup likes her...she is the antithesis of everything he is. Opposites attract in some respects, but a guy who likes hiking and the outdoors hardly seems likely to be happy long-term with a woman who won't get off the couch or whose idea of the "great outdoors" is a spa.

Anyway, to sum up, the characters actually devolve instead of evolve for most of the book and the story has an awful lot of words considering not a whole lot of interest happens. I could not get into the story because I hated all the characters by about the halfway point. The only reason I finished the book was because, dang it, I'd PAID for this schlock, and OVERPAID, at that. If you really must read this book, do yourself a favor and check it out at your local library, because there is no way that this e-book (or pretty much any e-book, because they're so cheap to produce) is worth the $11 they are now asking for it; I wouldn't pay $1 now that I know what it is all about.

The story's not worth the price
By SunFlowers
Just Like Me, Only Better is just what most reviews here, on goodreads, and Barnes and Noble say it is: a light read. Light read is code for "eh it's alright but definitely not something you recommend"

But Penguin publishing is one greedy publishing company (I wish I'd know about their greed and drama problems with Amazon before I bought this book. I WON'T purchase another books published by them or their umbrella companies unless it's REALLY worth it unlike this book). GREEDY COMPANY! This book from beginning to end is a $3.99 bargain bin book you happen to run on. Not $10. Ebooks cost little to nothing to produce and there's no distribution costs so WHY would an ebook be anything over $5? Greed. Plain and simple. These people are crazy and greedy as hell! The story isn't worth the price despite being a quick, light read.

Veronica is a 29 year old divorcee who's 41 year old husband cheated on her with a 52 year old woman. Veronica's youth passed her by getting knocked up and having a shotgun wedding at 22 so she's single, depressed and struggling to stay sane for her 6 year old son. Veronica is a doppelganger for Haley Rush, a Disney channel like tween star.

While out celebrating her birthday Haley Rush's manager offers Veronica a job offer. After taking him up on the offer she learns it's to impersonate Haley in public as Haley, not a body double. Because Haley is too "busy" to go out and have coffee and give the paparazzi the pictures they need. In truth, Haley is a bat you-know-what witch who's bipolar, addicted to a host of prescription meds, an alcoholic, bulimic and forever Peter Pan in the Michael Jackson "my parents took my childhood pimping me out in the spotlight so I'm scarred and my growth is stunted so I act forever 6 years old. Boo hoo for Haley.

I don't know what this story is. It's NOT a romance novel. It's not chick lit. It feels as if Ms. Snow was just writing and writing and just put in ANY and EVERYTHING she could imagine. It reads much more like a for free fan fiction over an action $10 novel.

It's okay but the balance is awful. It starts pretty good actually with Veronica working out the kinks on how to "be Haley" then it just lags for way to long. And if you EVERY want to read a Bad Mother's Handbook...Veronica is your woman. I feel so bad for her poor little boy. The little tyke is obviously in need of some family therapy because it's obvious the divorce and being shuffled from his mother's boring guesthouse to his grandma looking stepmother and father's mansion and he's so confused and whiny (for a little boy) and it's not him being a mama's boy but something obviously emotionally wrong with him. Veronica however, starts basking in finally having fun to where she just starts slipping away and turns into that friend or acquaintance who starts putting their "fun" time and sex time and dating BEFORE their children then they remember "Oh right! I have responsibilities and a good parent understands the balance"

Overall, PASS it on by. It's light and funny at the beginning then as it progresses you just want a refund and if you get it in a ebook a refund is impossible.

3 stars for a decent beginning but just what 3 stars mean overall: It's okay. Okay isn't something I'd recommend you buying. Not for $10.

I really enjoyed this book
By ShiShisOpinion
Such a cute read! I'm from Maryland and if you believe, half of us feel we are Southern and half do not! So I was rightly confused all of my 48 years though my heart always ached for Southern wisdom. After reading this book, and with all of the clever sayings dotted throughout it's official, I'm southern through and through! The book is well-written and is a true homage to the the authors mom. It flows from her youth to her own marriage & children at a fast pace. It's a delightful read. The only negatives is it references some things from 2007 the big Britney Spears shaving her head, and that dated the book. Editor should have caught that, especially for advice books, as they are usually read & reread for years to come. She also didn't touch on the subject of men do NOT do women's work at all ever in the South. We all know that, so OWN it! It's okay, it's charming! I can't wait to read her other books. And I will just keep it to myself that yes Marylanders put Old Bay on everything! And is usually the secret ingredient in casseroles, fried chicken, and deviled eggs! Hon!

Armageddon in Retrospect, by Kurt Vonnegut

The New York Times bestseller-a "gripping" posthumous collection of previously unpublished work by Kurt Vonnegut on the subject of war.

A fitting tribute to a literary legend and a profoundly humane humorist, Armageddon in Retrospect is a collection of twelve previously unpublished writings on war and peace. Imbued with Vonnegut's trademark rueful humor and outraged moral sense, the pieces range from a letter written by Vonnegut to his family in 1945, informing them that he'd been taken prisoner by the Germans, to his last speech, delivered after his death by his son Mark, who provides a warmly personal introduction to the collection. Taken together, these pieces provide fresh insight into Vonnegut's enduring literary genius and reinforce his ongoing moral relevance in today's world.

Amazon.com Review
The first and only collection of unpublished works by Kurt Vonnegut since his death--a fitting tribute to the author, and an essential contribution to the discussion of war, peace, and humanity's tendency toward violence.

Armageddon in Retrospect is a collection of twelve new and unpublished writings on war and peace. Imbued with Vonnegut's trademark rueful humor, the pieces range from a visceral nonfiction recollection of the destruction of Dresden during World War II--an essay that is as timely today as it was then--to a painfully funny short story about three Army privates and their fantasies of the perfect first meal upon returning home from war, to a darker, more poignant story about the impossibility of shielding our children from the temptations of violence. Also included are Vonnegut's last speech as well as an assortment of his artwork, and an introduction by the author's son, Mark Vonnegut. Armageddon in Retrospect says as much about the times in which we live as it does about the genius of the writer.

Read an Unreleased Kurt Vonnegut Story, "Guns Before Butter"

"Guns Before Butter," Kurt Vonnegut's story of hungry GIs held as prisoner of war in World War II in Dresden (a site of Vonnegut's best-known novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, and his own wartime imprisonment), was unpublished until its inclusion in Armageddon in Retrospect. Read the complete story here.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. When Kurt Vonnegut died in April 2007, the world lost a wry commentator on the human condition. Thanks to this collection of unpublished fiction and nonfiction, Vonnegut's voice returns full force. Introduced by his son, these writings dwell on war and peace, especially the firebombing of Dresden, Germany. The volume opens with a poignant 1945 letter from Pfc. Kurt Vonnegut Jr. to his father in Indianapolis, presenting a vivid portrait of his harrowing escape from that city. The fiction, full of his characteristic humor, includes stories about time travel and the impossibility of peace in the world (Great Day) and, in the title piece, a kind of mock Paradise Lost, Dr. Lucifer Mephisto teaches his charges about the insidious nature of evil and the impossibility of good ever triumphing. In his final speech, Vonnegut lets go some of his zingers (jazz is safe sex of the highest order) and does what he always did best, tell the truth through jokes: And how should we behave during the Apocalypse? We should be unusually kind to one another, certainly. But we should also stop being so serious. Jokes help a lot. And get a dog, if you don't already have one. So it goes. (Apr.)

From Booklist
The first piece in this collection, a seeming facsimile of the letter Vonnegut wrote to inform his family that he had not, in fact, died in combat, sets the tone for the rest—indeed, for everything he wrote afterward. In terse, reportorial prose, he describes his internment as a POW, the firebombing of Dresden, and his labors among the dead. In the subsequent speeches, essay, and stories, we see one of the twentieth-century’s better minds wrestling with the horrors of the age, drafting and redrafting, sometimes losing that famous sense of humor—itself surely a defense against too much feeling. The work here is uneven: “Happy Birthday, 1951” is a simple, affecting story of boys’ attraction to violence, while “Great Day,” a time-traveling farce, feels like an outtake. Several others capture the pathetic absurdity of war and its aftermath in the author’s trademark tone. Not the best introduction to Vonnegut, but certainly fascinating for his countless fans. Unfortunately, review galleys don’t include any provenance for the pieces, an omission that will hopefully be corrected for final publication. --Keir Graff

And so it goes...(sigh)
By Kerry Walters
Vonnegut is an American treasure. He was the Mark Twain of my generation, and I'm confident that he'll continue to be read and admired by future ones. But not everything that even an author like Vonnegut writes needs to see the light of day. And if Vonnegut himself chose not to publish certain manuscripts during his lifetime, that sends off a pretty good signal.

Which brings us to Armageddon in Retrospect, a posthumous (one of many to come?) collection of twelve unpublished pieces related to war. (The entire collection is prefaced by Vonnegut's final speech, which after his death was read by his son Mark to the gathering that commissioned it. If it actually had been given by Vonnegut, it probably would've been hilarious; delivery is everything. But in print, it's a rather tedious litany of flat one-liners.) Many of the pieces are inspired by Vonnegut's World War II experience as a prisoner of war, the same one that birthed his incomparable Slaughterhouse-Five. But these stories, unlike the novel, are...well, at best mildly interesting and insightful. The only one that really measures up to the Vonnegut genius is the title piece, "Armageddon in Retrospect." Less good but still respectable are "Great Day" and "Happy Birthday, 1951." But other pieces in the collection, such as "Just You and Me, Sammy" and "Brighten Up" are just awful: mechanical in style, predictable in plot.

What does come across in these hitherto unpublished writings is the humanist Vonnegut's deep hatred of war. (In the collection's Introduction, son Mark tells us that Vonnegut became depressed and hopeless when the current war in Iraq broke out.) The quality of the stories anthologized here may be uneven, but their passionate indictment of what war does to the soldiers and civilians who live through it is itself eloquent.

But is it eloquent enough to warrant the publication of these pieces? I dunno. Reasonable people can reasonably disagree on that one. But I do hope that Vonnegut's literary executors will think long and hard before publishing every scribble he left behind. Even geniuses like Vonnegut had their bad writing days.

And by the way, Kurt: I miss ya.

"When does all the hate end?"
By Gregory Baird
"Where do I get my ideas from? You might as well have asked that of Beethoven. He was goofing around in Germany like everybody else, and all of a sudden this stuff came gushing out of him. It was music. I was goofing around like everybody else in Indiana, and all of a sudden stuff came gushing out. It was disgust with civilization."

Kurt Vonnegut was no stranger to getting his feelings out there in his fiction. Slaughterhouse-Five is the most obvious example, using protagonist Billy Pilgrim's experience as a survivor of the horrific bombing of Dresden as a stand-in for Vonnegut himself, who was a prisoner of war during that life-altering event. Being present for that atrocity forever scarred Vonnegut's perception of humanity, and the repercussions can be felt whenever you pick up one of his books. Truly, he was a man with a complicated, tortured perspective on the rest of the world. He had seen humanity at its worst, yet still seemed to believe that it was possible for man to redeem himself if he would just try. Yes, Vonnegut's canon is packed with the disgust for civilization that he mentions in the above quote, but it is also marked by a starry-eyed hopefulness. William Golding, author of "Lord of the Flies," struck the same chords in his fiction, and he took home a Nobel Prize for his troubles.

"Armageddon in Retrospect" is a collection of previously unpublished works by Vonnegut, almost exclusively from the period of his life after he returned home from WWII and before he struck it big as a novelist. The exceptions are a speech that he was meant to deliver in Indianapolis in late April, 2007, but which had to be delivered by his son, Mark, instead after Vonnegut passed away earlier that same month, and a letter that he wrote to his family to explain what had happened to him since he had been taken prisoner (namely, that he had survived that dreadful firebombing in Dresden and would be returning home, although many of his compatriots had not been so lucky). The letter is nothing short of astonishing. Devoid of almost all emotion, it resonates powerfully - a truly timeless document, but one that is especially meaningful in a time when there are American soldiers overseas and fighting rages on. The speech, on the other hand, is notable as the last piece of writing the great Vonnegut would produce, but for anyone who read A Man Without a Country it will sound a little too familiar.

The bulk of "Armageddon" is comprised of short stories, and splendid stories they are, if a slight touch uneven. "Great Day," "The Unicorn Trap," and, unfortunately, the title story, "Armageddon in Retrospect," are stumbles, but only minor ones. Luckily, the good stories do more than their share to balance things out. With two exceptions, all of the stories deal directly with the wages of war and the soldiers who survive the ordeal. All of them examine the inherent corruptibility of man, and the things some people are willing to do to survive. More than one story features a character who cozies up to his enemy in order to make his situation more comfortable, and uses that position to exploit his comrades in POW camp. The best of the bunch, "Happy Birthday, 1951," is a poignant look at an older man who is trying to teach a young boy the value of peace, but who cannot compete with the glamorous appeal of tanks and guns to sway the boy's interests.

"Armageddon in Retrospect" feels like the most personal of Vonnegut's works on the market, perhaps because in its twists and turns you can feel the personal struggle of its author to reconcile what he has seen of the realities of mankind's present and past with what he hopes is in store for the future. If at times he angrily remarks "When does all the hate end? Never," he also has the power to envision a soldier who has just arrived in Europe, untainted by the fighting that had gone on, who singlehandedly restores the faith of a cabinet-maker whose experiences during his city's occupation have left him with little hope for the future. If we could just get away from war's influence, Vonnegut seems to be arguing, we might just be all right in the end.

With all of these weighty contemplations, it is a wonder that Vonnegut was able to hold on to his whimsical touch, but thankfully he never lost that attribute. Everything he wrote was imbued with a keen eye for the absurd, the fantastic, and the satiric. And for evidence of this look no further than the author photo gazing out from the back of the book's jacket, featuring an aged Vonnegut waving to the camera with a goofy expression on his face (half serious, half amused), framed by voluminous flowers and a garden gnome riding a pig (seriously). It amuses me, but it is also rather sad, because in the context of this book's publication it feels like he is waving goodbye. I never met Kurt Vonnegut, but I will miss him terribly. At least, with "A Man without a Country" and "Armageddon in Retrospect" the great author got the goodbye he deserved.

Grade: A

PS My personal favorite when it comes to Vonnegut is Mother Night, so be sure to snap that one up post haste.

From Publishers Weekly
In bestseller Robb's slick 26th not-so-near-future crime thriller to feature Lt. Eve Dallas (after 2007's Creation in Death), the New York City homicide cop investigates the murder of business tycoon Thomas Anders, whose strangled body is discovered tied to his bed, apparently the victim of a kinky sex encounter gone bad. Aided by her mysterious husband, Roarke, and long-time sidekick Det. Delia Peabody, Eve doggedly questions Anders's widow, Ava, and his nephew, Benedict Forrest, number two at the victim's corporation, Anders Worldwide. Both Ava and Benedict have alibis that put them far from the crime scene at the time of Anders's death. While the guilty party soon becomes obvious and the gimmick used by the culprit clear to anyone familiar with Strangers on a Train, Robb's strong, hard-nosed heroine once again generates the kind of heat that keeps fans turning the pages. From AudioFile
This fast-paced installment of the Eve and Roarke series, which takes place in 2060, is concisely narrated with verve and humor by Susan Ericksen. Her reading integrates the mystery of philanthropist Thomas Anders's scandalous death with Lieutenant Eve Dallas's hot relationship with her Irish billionaire husband, Roarke. Eve's sidekick, Detective Delia Peabody, is a character of warmth and humor--in contrast to Dallas's hard-nosed, aggressive style. Ericksen portrays these various characters with unique voices that are compatible with their personalities. Her Irish accent for Roarke is uncannily believable as is the voice of a character who is suffering from a terrible cold. The production is engaging, and Ericksen's verbal nuances add drama to the novel. S.C.A. Sin Has Many Tools, But A Lie Is The Handle Which Fits Them All. -Oliver Wendell Holmes
By Cherise Everhard
This is the 31st book, when including novellas, in a long running and my personal favorite suspense series.

The year is 2060 and Lt. Eve Dallas of the New York Police and Security Department is called to the scene when sports mogul and children's philanthropist, Tom Anders, is murdered in his home. All evidence points to some sort of sexual deviancy gone wrong, but things aren't making sense to Eve. She enlists the help of her delectable Irish hubby, Roarke, and her partner Detective Peabody to solve the case.

I love this author and I loved this book. This In Death book had a slightly different feel as pretty early on we learn who the murderer is and the rest of the book is Eve building her case to prove her gut feeling. But that didn't detract from the suspense or the flow of the book at all; in fact I thought it enhanced it. J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) throws some twist and turns in that kept Eve, her team and this reader on their toes.

While these In Death books tend to be dark to due to the homicides Eve investigates, this one had a lot of light moments, too. I laughed a lot at the banter Eve engages in with Peabody, Roarke and Captain Feeney. Eve's friend Louise, the doctor and her Licensed Companion boyfriend, Charles play a small but significant role in this book, and that added a large amount of pleasure for this reader.

This book was definitely hard to put down and exceptionally entertaining. I am wowed by this series. After so many books it seems it would be hard to delight and surprise her faithful readers, but J.D. Robb does so, continuously and flawlessly. Enjoy!

The kindness of strangers
By H. Grove (errantdreams)
The year is 2060, and Eve Dallas is a New York City homicide detective who takes her job very seriously. Today she has a real headache of a case brewing: rich man and philanthropist Thomas Anders is dead, and he died in a very compromising position while his wife was out of town. The problem is, some of the death details don't add up to the sordid crime it appears to be, and the more Eve pokes at it the more confusing it gets. Add to that a nearly cold case involving an abused woman's dead husband killed by a prostitute, and Eve's in for her usual wild ride.

Eve spends the first half of the book figuring out who her killer is, and the second half figuring out howdunit (and how to prove it). The mystery is a fascinating one and unraveling it definitely kept me enthralled. Part of the delight is watching Eve dig out the details and outsmart the killer, with the help of her friends, her co-workers, and of course her devilish husband Roarke.

Oh, yes, Roarke. Marriage has hardly slowed these two down. Their chemistry is every bit as brilliant as when they first met, and their sex scenes are every bit as pulse-poundingly hot. In short, Strangers in Death is a delicious story that positively screams to be read in bed. If you want gritty or 'realistic' you should go with another series---these books are all about enjoying the sheer style that can be wrung out of a good futuristic detective caper.

Like other books in this series, Strangers in Death stands alone surprisingly well, allowing you to come into the series at any book. The only oddness this might result in is that some side characters' appearances might seem slightly unnecessary if you aren't familiar with their importance in Eve's life.

It's a competition - Dallas vs the murderer
By ramblinreader
In Chapter 19 Roarke tell Eve "It's a competition" and that is the best description I can give this book. The murderer got into a high security house and manaaged to kill Thomas Anders without leaving a trace. The suspects all have alibis. Lieutenant Eve Dallas has no clues, witnesses, or even a motive.

This book has a fresh plot. Most of the "in Death" series have serial murders with Eve fighting against time to stop the bad guy(s) before any body shows up. Strangers In Death has one dead body and only a few suspects. Eve quickly narrows down her murderer, but has to tweak out the clues as to how it was done. Hint - look at the title.

Many of my favorite supporting cast is back. Charles Monroe is tied into the murder and he has his own subplot problems. We have our sassy Peabody, prancing McNabb, a sick Feeney, a touch of Mavis (and Belle), Louise, Nadine, Trueheart, Baxter (I think he's the candy thief - he seems to be the only cop not afraid of Eve) and of course Summerset (who finds a new way to irritate Eve - jus not greet her at the door) And of course the luscious Roarke who is both lover and investigating partner (squishing in "bit of business" while waiting to help Eve grill suspects).

JD Robb has gone all out on this book. We have murder, twists, humor, and even a few moments set aside for emotional growth in Eve & Roarke's marriage. Eve's childhood nightmares have been put on hold and relationship issues brought to the forefront. If you were a hater of Roarke's old girlfriend from a couple books ago, Eve has her own version of theraphy.

Promises Reveal (Berkley Sensation Historical Romance), by Sarah McCarty

One of Ellora’s Cave’s most popular authors lives up to her promise with her Sensation debut.

Dedicated artist Evie Washington isn’t the marrying kind. But when she admitted that her faceless portrait of a naked man was modeled on the devilishly handsome Reverend Brad Swanson, her family vowed to save her reputation—even if it meant taking away her hard-won freedom. Little do they realize that the preacher isn’t exactly what he seems...

Great!

I really didn't like the Reverend from reading the other Promises books. I bought the book because I love Sarah McCarty's books, but I wasn't really looking forward to reading about the Reverend. But I was pleasantly suprised, I really enjoyed the story! The only "con" to this book is the sex is tamer, and some people who are familiar with McCarty's other books may be dissapointed by that. I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't really mind the toned down erotica. It was still a page turner for me!
