This tale opens with the complete destruction by fire of a Virginia horse farm, the owner of which was said to be in London. As consultant to the FBI and the ATF's NRT (that's the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms' National Response Team), Scarpetta joins the investigation on site and discovers some remains of a young woman in the master bath. Although the origin of the fire remains a mystery, research turns up two similar unsolved incidents from years earlier, female victims who were dead before the accompanying conflagration. Another fire disguising another murder, and the escape of Carrie Grethen, evil woman partner of Scarpetta's now dead archenemy Temple Gault, from a New York City hospital for the criminally insane, ups Scarpetta's anxiety level about both her beloved, brilliant niece, Lucy, who was seduced by Grethen in The Body Farm, and her lover, psychological profiler Benton Wesley. A third fire covers a third personally devastating death before Scarpetta is able to finger Grethen's new diabolical partner and survive a harrowing finale in a helicopter. Although Cornwell repeatedly tells us how anxious, strung out or devastated Scarpetta feels in the face of Grethen's evil threats, there's very little dramatization of these powerfully emotional conditions. Savored Moments

I've read all of Cornwell's books up to this one, and I found this sad, sad, sad -- as well as wonderfully done. As usual, Cornwell's characters are so real the reader feels like we know them personally. In Point of Origin, Cornwell gives the morbidly curious her usual dose of the gross but very real aspect of death. Most people don't think of the cutting open of bodies as part of murder investigations, but as a writer and reporter, I have come across medical investigators and crime myself. I have grown so fond of her character, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, that I can see her with my own eyes. (In fact, I picture her as looking exactly like Cornwell, from her descriptions of Scarpetta and Cornwell's own photographs and Cornwell's experience). Scarpetta and myself savored the last moments of a dying relationship through this book. Cornwell never gives you an ending you'd expect. In fact, this one shocked me, and I'm pretty unshockable. Putting emotion aside, it was the best possible ending she could have done. I think Scarpetta would agree, although in an ironic, unhappy sense. The book serves up horrendous death and a lesson readers can take with them in their own lives -- not to take anything for granted. Bravo, Cornwell!

Lukewarm, not hot.

There is a guideline among play/screenwriters that says if a gun is on the table in the first act, it must be fired by act three. So when the villain's threatening letter appears on the first page of the book, a reader can reasonably expect a person-to-person confrontation by the end of the book. Don't hold your breath, it never happens. The ending clearly points to a continuation of Carrie the Villain in another Kay Scarpetta book, but disappointed fans may not pick up the next installment.
Kay Scarpetta fans will have to be devoted and loyal to love this book. The quality if a far cry from the tensely plotted, intriguingly detailed books that Cornwell wrote at the beginning of the series. The result is a main character who has shed all her flaws, leaving an unsympathetic, driven, workaholic superhero in her place.
Kay's niece, in this plot installment, is fast following the character of her aunt. In other books this young woman was brittle, smart, sympathetic, and on the brink of self-understanding. Now she is just another lesbian computer genius, athlete, and expert helicopter pilot who comes complete with incredible intuition and brilliant firefighting skills and who regularly falls in love with her supervisors. Oh, and she was the villain's former lover, too. But it wasn't her fault. She was young. And dumb. Her character just doesn't add up.
Readers can't sympathize with someone they don't understand, let alone identify with. A good book editor would have made sure to create a character transition for those who have not read every Kay Scarpetta book in order.
And that's the major problem with the book--it's not badly written, it has a lot of potential to be another stay-up-all-night-and-read-Cornwell book, but it is badly damaged by sloppy work that could have been easily fixed by a shrewd book editor. An editor would have also made sure the escaped colt that received a big buildup was explained instead of forgotten; that Mr. Sparks either had a name change or at least a more finished role in the second half of the book; that people vital to the plot line would have been introduced before the plot line is exhausted; that the dialogue flows less awkwardly; that the non-word "ironical" never appeared at all; and that the ending explained better why no chemical ingniter was found in the tests when it suddenly becomes an important factor in the book.
Let's hope plot details get fixed by the next installment, or it won't be a mystery that Kay Scarpetta fans begin to vanish.

Emotional, Oh So Emotional...

I have to admit something about this book - it made me cry. Yes, at one point while reading, I had to wipe tears off of my face and rub my eyes so I could see the printed words. Ok, so I may be emotional, but Patricia Cornwell knows how to bring the sentiments of her readers to the surface. And just to clarify a major point (and save a little of my credibility) I've had others admit that they shed a few tears while reading this book too! So there, you can be assured that I'm not a crybaby (at least most of the time) it's just that this book really moves people.

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is again on the trail of Temple Gault and his one time accomplice Carrie Grethen. This is a personal thing with Scarpetta since the dastardly duo tried to set up her niece Lucy and used Lucy's passion as part of a psychotic game in THE BODY FARM. Scarpetta has a new role, one of consulting forensic pathologist for the federal government (just how many hats can that lady possibly wear?). She's called to investigate a horse ranch that had been burned to the ground, and a body found in the ruins. As Scarpetta is on the heels of this pyromania killer (Gault and Grethen or someone else?), her usual cast of support characters surrounds her. We again see Benton, Lucy, and Marino at their best (and worse) so that a vivid picture of who they are and what makes them tick is forever established in our imaginations.

The main thing that makes this book memorable is the emotions this story brings to the surface. We see each of the characters as we've never seen them before and it makes it much easier to relate to some that Cornwell has kept at arm's length from the reader.

True to her fans, Patricia Cornwell doesn't disappoint with this work. It's graphic, emotional and thrilling, as we've come to expect from this writer who is setting the standard for mysteries in the future. It's almost impossible to put this book down and turn the light off to go to bed!

I have always followed a healthy lifestyle and I have no health problems but this book has helped me fine-tune my health and fitness. I was amazed that I have been eating some wrong food most of my life. Since I changes I feel even better than I did before and lost some excess stomach fat,even though that was not my intention. Highly recommended. By the way, I am over 70 and I have bought it for an 80 year old friend. I think it would work for any age.

Anna Pigeon Davidson along with hubby Paul have gone to rest, relax and try to help her get over the traumatic Iles stay she had that was pulling her down into a very dark place.
Along the Rio Grand they planned a river float trip with a handful of college aged kids. One horror after another nearly kills them all then the story takes a twist and Anna is in charge of a newborn..
Another great national park is put in the spotlight. Another great Pigeon mystery!

Feels cobbled together

This latest edition of Ruff's book is apparently a revised edition of his original book written in the 70s with some things deleted and some new information added on to bring the reader up to date as of the beginnings of the current sub-prime meltdown. My first comment is that it feels a bit cut and pasted. Some passages are repeated verbatim in different sections of the book, some are repeated not quite verbatim but close enough to count as repetitive. Based on this alone, a star has to be deleted.

Otherwise, Ruff's message has not changed much in the intervening 30 years or so which some may argue proves it is "timeless" while others probably feel it's tired. The emphasis is on inflation which leads to some interesting plot turns. He is a huge supporter of gold and even more so, silver because of the rapid printing of fiat currencies. Despite the fact that deflation currently rules, as of this writing (February 2009), gold is near an all-time high and silver is up solidly in the past several months. So, his advice seems correct if not quite for the correct reasons.

One unusual strategy he advocates in the book is to basically leverage up your home with a fixed rate mortgage and put the proceeds in a compounding money market fund. The logic again comes back to his belief that inflation will rule so that the yield on your money market fund will be climbing while your mortgage payments remain constant. Unfortunately for you if you followed this strategy, interest rates have gone down, so this strategy would have worked against you. It still may prove a smart move, but so far, big mistake.

Finally he advocates a basic food storage program adequate for up to six months. He does take pains to explain that he is not expecting the end of the world when he endorses this idea, but he does expect disruptions. As he correctly states, there is no downside to this storage plan. If he's wrong, you eat the insurance (literally). If he's correct, you'll likely be very glad to have the basics around if you are unable to purchase food items easily or perhaps at all.

In conclusion, if you have never been exposed to these sort of ideas, you should be and this book is not a bad place to start. If you are already familiar with the material, it doesn't break any new ground or go into tremendous detail on any subject. Others have pointed out the many plugs for his services which are a bit annoying but easy to ignore.

A good primer, but needs some touch ups.

A good overall primer on the current financial mess as well as some worthwhile suggestions on how to prosper/prepare for what may be happening next. Some of it might seem paranoid, but others would say he's only prudent.

It would be even better if he didn't take so much time trying to sell everybody on his newsletter, but it doesn't take away from the quality of the books message. However, some closer editing might serve the author well (especially considering that this is the second edition) specifically the part where he quotes Alexander Tytler. The quote he mentions roughly says: "Democracy only lasts as long as it takes for the people to realize they can vote themselves benefits from the public treasury."

While it is a true statement, five minutes of Google searching can tell you the quote was never uttered nor written by Alexander Tytler. It was quoted by Reagan in a political speech (probably thrown in there by a careless speech writer) and has been unfortunately repeated in conservative circles as much as "May you live in interesting times" is repeated by intellectuals, pseudo and otherwise. That one was wrongly cited as a "Chinese curse" by RFK in a speech he made in South Africa in 1965 (there is no such expression or curse in Chinese).

Nevertheless, this is a quick primer for anyone who hasn't been paying attention or wants a straightforward explanation to the train wreck we're all witnessing now.

Great Talk by 100% wrong

I read this book in the early 1980s and believed the author, who was also doing the television circuit. Taking Ruff's advice, I bought gold and silver at their highs and watched their value fall for decades. Only now, has gold made new highs, but not if you adjust for inflation or look at the missed opportunity cost of say, investing that money in stocks. (I didn't store food in my basement as Ruff also advised.)

At the same time, I watched the Dow Jones go from 850 to 14,000, which according to Ruff, was supposed to fall. The U.S. economy was fine and grew through the 1980s and 1990s, contrary to Ruff's predictions. Ruff said gold would skyrocket, it fell like a stone. Ruff said we would have hyperinflation, we had rate stability and economic growth.

In other words, Ruff was 100% wrong during a 30 year period. For those who think that he's finally right, even a broken clock is right twice a day. But I have no expectation that the U.S. economy is going belly up as Ruff predicted.

Flowers, who made his debut as a secondary character in the Davenport thriller Invisible Prey (2007), is a low-key loose cannon whose wardrobe consists of alternative-rock t-shirts carefully chosen to match his agenda of the day. Virgil Flowers Book One worth a re-read

First in the Virgil Flowers series, which I actually enjoy more than the Prey series with Lucas Davenport, which is great.. Excellent character development in Flowers, an investigator with Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation working for Davenport.

The story itself has lots of turns and twists to keep the reader entertained and guessing. Gee - suddenly there are several homicides in and around tiny Bluestem, Minnesota and - they might be connected? There's no such thing as coincidence. Watching Flowers make unravel the clues and make the connections is entertaining second only to Flowers himself.

If you haven't read a Virgil Flowers novel, start here and read in sequence. It's not necessary but I enjoy doing that to watch the characters evolve. This was reading #2 for me... I was out of fresh Flowers.

Another winner for Sanford

John Sanford is a great story teller. The book is rich with local detail; he knows the Minnesota prairie lands. Characters are believable; they act like real people, with complexity, personality quirks, and organic humor. It is all wrapped around an engrossing mystery. The Virgil Flowers series and the Prey series are reliably great reads.

Sandford brings us Flowers

Most of John Sandford's books feature his cop hero Lucas Davenport, and most of the remaining books feature other characters from the same world, most notably artist/problem-solver Kidd. Dark of the Moon stars another character from the Davenport universe, Virgil Flowers. Flowers has played a supporting role in the recent Davenport books as another detective in Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, but this novel gives him a chance to shine on his own.

Flowers has been called to the small rural town of Bluestem to look into the murder of an old doctor and his wife. Even as Flowers gets into town, however, another murder takes place, the arson-killing of Bill Judd, the local big wig that plenty of people hated (kind of a nastier version of C. Montgomery Burns). It doesn't take long for Flowers to sense a connection between the two crimes. And since all three victims were getting on in years, Flowers also suspects a connection to the past.

The most likely culprit is a born-again crook who now leads a racist Christian sect that may or may not be involved with other criminal activities. But this man is a present-day problem and Flowers also looks back in time and a link to a "man-in-the-moon" that ties the victims together. Assisting Flowers is the local sheriff (an old childhood friend) and providing a romantic interest is the sheriff's sister.

Unlike most Davenport books, which have the killer identified early on and get the suspense from the killers capture or death, Dark of the Moon leaves the reader guessing as to who is responsible. It is not, however, a whodunit, as there is little way for the reader to guess the killer any earlier than Flowers.

As the protagonist, however, Flowers is unimpressive: though he is likeable enough with his little quirks (for example, he has a fondness for rock band tee shirts), he is not particularly memorable. When I first read the Davenport books, I thought that this was a character I wanted to read more about; with Flowers, I wouldn't feel bad if he never appeared in another book. However, if he did, I'm sure the book would be a lot like this one: an entertaining if forgettable effort by Sandford.

A fascinating, horrifying read

I am not your typical fan of true crime, this may be the first time I've ever delved into the genre. This crime occurred 20 miles from my home and as such, I was horrified and fascinated by the details. The authors researched the couple's history and paint a picture of a man who lied and prevaricated to make up for his own perceived shortcomings and a woman whose success was measured by a standard set forth by a paycheck that exceeded her husband's. Tara was living a woman's American dream, "having it all," yet she too was plagued by the fact that she was not always physically there for her children. This peek behind the curtain is a compelling tale of how things can go terribly wrong. The story is told journalistically as the authors are both reporters, though there is some excellent recreated dialogue that makes it feel like a novel. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of murder mysteries, true crime and even romance, as I really believe this is a tale of love gone bad.

A Page Turner!

Written by two accomplished journalists, Andrea Billups and Steve Miller, A Slaying in the Suburbs-The Tara Grant Murder reads like a novel. The authors take you behind closed doors inside the home of Tara and Steven Grant. Billups and Miller give a fantastic account of the events leading up to and beyond Tara's murder and dismemberment.
By all accounts this is your typical neighborhood family with two kids. But in this book you will learn fascinating details about how this seemingly supportive husband and dedicated father, transforms from Mr. Mom to murderer and the cowardly lengths he will go to avoid responsibility and prosecution.
While there have been some who say this book is sympathetic to Steven Grant, who granted the authors jailhouse interviews, I did not feel any sympathy toward him. It's unfortunate that Tara's family would not make themselves available for interviews, but the detailed background reporting gives the reader a good picture of a smart, ambitious, dedicated working mother who was doing her best to find the delicate balance of work and family.
This is a heartbreaking, real-life account of a tragedy that leaves two young kids without their mother, and a father behind bars who saddled them with a burden that will change the course of their lives.

Good book

I couldn't put this book down. Maybe because I'm from the area where this murder took place so it was all familiar to me...but it was very interesting to read the story from Stephen Grant's point of view. It puts you in the mind of a pyschopath for a few days. My only complaint is the obvious bashing of Sheriff Mark Hackel and the Macomb County Sheriff's Department. Anyone local knows that they handled this case the way they should have...and they caught him, so I think that is all that matters.

Afong's second great book

Afong has done it again. In the second (that I know of) book dedicated to his fellow snipers, Afong has given us an in-depth look at how the Marine, Navy, and Army snipers become death dealers from afar. There are mulitple stories of snipers in-country and down range. This is a great book for any future sniper to see what he might face when his time comes to face the enemy. I recommend both of Afong's books.

Redemption - Awesome Bravo Milo!

Milo's second book pays tribute to all military snipers doing their job of keeping us safe. They are all highly skilled and all great men. Milo's skills in writing have greatly increased. I enjoyed reading the book cover to cover. Chapter 7 Redemption should be turned into a movie - it is a powerful story that needs to to be told from those who where part of it. Semper Fi

POETIC PAYBACK

a superb follow-up companion volume to Afong's initial and exciting work, HOGS IN THE SHADOW (also 5-stars highly recommended). HUNTERS starts off a bit slow and in the beginning, lacks the quick rush and punch of adrenaline inducing combat stories of US sniper action in IRAQ. at the onset...he attempts to fill in the gaps of sniper employment in AFGHANISTAN missing in his first book...a prior omission he is perhaps hard pressed to rectify?. in addition, Afong a former USMC sniper attempts to be all-inclusive by relating US sniper actions on the part of USN SEALS, US ARMY & SPECIAL FORCES (HOGS who know how to reach out and touch someone)...although enlightening to those outside of this exclusive shooting community....it tended to disburse and dilute his own personal area of specialty and experience, i.e., US MARINE CORPS sniper doctrine. however in later chapters....AFONG incorporates several declassified US sniper after-action reports & anecdotes on certain battle actions involving their expertise deployment, all written and recounted in his sparse wry narrative style in ensuing chapters does loom up and does not fail to satisfy. the amazing tale of the 'LOST USMC SNIPER RIFLE' captured by iraqi insurgents (the enemy ambush and killed all four members of an USMC Headhunter 2-Bravo sniper team in Ramandi)....the captured marine sniper rifle falls into enemy's hands and is subsequently used by an iraqi sniper killing americans....fast-forward two years later, the same rifle is recovered an USMC sniper team when they inadvertently encounter (while on a routine counter IED survelliance and neutralization mission) and take out the iraqi sniper. reads like a hollywood movie plot! but is absolutely true! this astounding tale of redemption is alone worth the price of the book! also there is nothing more satisfying than reading about US sniper teams eliminating (with extreme prejudice and surgical precision) iraqi IED planters caught in the act...sweet poetic payback!
