Hard to Handle

Harley Handleman has built his entire life to the end goal of being the SBC extreme fighting champion. He has been close, but life always interferes with his plans. After his latest disappointment, he rents a remote cabin to rehab and get his head together.

Life Coach Anastasia Bradley is Harley's landlord. They have met in passing several times, but after an unexpected encounter, he is seeing her in a new light. She is reluctant to get involved with him because his womanizing ways are legendary. Women flock to him, and she is determined not to be one of them.

When an attempt is made on Stasia's life, Harley makes it his mission to keep her safe. While he refuses her help to gain focus and get his life in order, she inadvertently has an effect on him.

I liked this book - well written! Harley is all alpha male, strong and sexy. Stasia is also strong, focused, and unpredictable. I really like that she doesn't fall at his feet, and remains her own person. That is sometimes difficult to do when surrounded by such a commanding presence like Harley. I also am glad that Barber, Dean, Eve, and the gang were involved in the story. It wouldn't be the same without them.

Disappointing...

After reading 'Simon Says', I was quick to pick this one up. 'Simon Says' was a great book: good primary and secondary characters, believable plot, etc... I was excited to find out what happened to Harley Handleman and Barber but this book fell very flat in telling both of their stories. After many stops and starts, I finally managed to finish the book and was left with the same ugh feeling I had when I started it. Without much dexterity, this book intertwines the story of Harley+Stasia and Barber+Jasmine.

In a nut shell... Stasia was fairly annoying, and the resolution of her stalker situation was quick, pat and totally out of left field. Harley's bondage fetish wasn't overdone (thank goodness), but his total about-face from male ho to one-woman-man was too abrupt. I was most disappointed by the secondary plot with Barber - he was one of my favorite characters from 'Simon Says', definitely excellent trashy romance novel hero material. In this book, he starts out sleeping around as much as humanly possible (he and Harley could compete in a sluttiest man contest), whines a little bit about losing Dakota to Simon, then meets Jasmine and promptly forgets both the male slut contest and Dakota. Jasmine wasn't much of a character; if she'd had more page space I probably would have liked her. I haven't read 'Causing Havoc' so I can't say how that compares, but this book was definitely not a good follow-up to 'Simon Says'.

Not the best Lori Foster.

I love Lori Foster and the other books about the SBC have been really fast and enjoyable reads. I was really looking forward to reading this book, the teaser chapters on her website made this book a must buy for me. However, I found myself flipping through the book trying to get to places with Anastasia and Harley in it. I did not like the fact that the book titled Hard to Handle, was mostly about Barber and his love life. I agree with other reviewers that the book loses its focus on the main characters. If you flip almost to the end of the book, you can see where Anastasia and Harley finally get together, and it only took about 200 pages or so. I did not like this book at all and am sorry I rushed to the bookstore to buy it.

My War is a book that will challenge many of the most common assumptions about the Iraq War and the people fighting in it. Colby Buzzell, the book's author and a U.S. Army machine-gunner who did a year-long tour in Iraq, is not the stereotypical small-town soldier from a Red State. He grew up in San Francisco eating pot brownies at the Haight-Ashbury Street Fair, skateboarding, and listening to punk and heavy metal. He supported Ralph Nader for president, reads George Orwell, and his dad worked in Silicon Valley. But he was sick of his "life in oblivion," bouncing around from one dead-end job to another. As Buzzell writes in his typically gritty prose, "I didn’t want to get all old and have my bratty grandkids ask me, 'Grandpa, where were you during the Iraq war?' and me going, 'Oh, I was busy doing temp work and data entry for 12 bucks an hour.'"

In search of adventure, Buzzell joined the army and got sent to Iraq. First stationed in the ultra-dangerous Sunni Triangle, he quickly mastered how to use the M240 Bravo machine gun: "Just get behind that muthafucka and just fire it." His fellow soldiers, mostly hip-hop fans or headbanging metal-heads like him, killed time watching porn on mini-portable DVD players or listening to Metallica on their iPods while on patrol. Long boring spells were interrupted by wild fits of confusing action. On one of Buzzell's first missions, two platoons fired thousands of rounds at near point-blank range at an unarmed Iraqi civilian. Amazingly, he survived. Out of boredom, Buzzell started a blog, one of the first by an ordinary "Joe" grunt in Iraq. It became a media sensation and got Buzzell in trouble with the REMFs ("Rear Echelon Mutha Fuckers") because of his less-than-glamorous portrayal of the war and his superiors, whom he accuses of constantly lying to the public and the soldiers under their command. My War may be disappointing to readers looking for deeper introspections on the moral questions behind the war, but it is a pretty convincing case against the claim that everything in Iraq is going fine. --Alex Roslin

With this relentlessly cynical volume, Buzzell converts his widely read 2004 blog into an episodic but captivating memoir about the year he spent serving as an army "trigger puller" in Iraq. Posted to Mosul in late 2003, Buzzell's platoon was ordered "to locate, capture and kill all non compliant forces." Accordingly, his entries describe experiences pursuing elusive guerrillas (aka "men in black"); enduring sniping, rocket and mortar attacks; and witnessing the occasional car bomb. Face-to-face fighting almost never occurs. No matter: though the combat scenes are exciting, this book is actually more engrossing as a portrait of the day-to-day life of a young American soldier who has "read, and re-read, countless times, every single one of [Bukowski's] books." Like Bukowski, Buzzell appears to be a sentimental misanthrope; he pours scorn on everyone from cooks to generals to President Bush. He also despises the media, the antiwar movement and everyone who thinks they understand what's happening in Iraq. That his superiors kept their hands off his blog for several months, however, shows they understood that;despite its foul language, griping, insults directed at higher officers and occasional exposure of dirty linen;Buzzell's work never really wavers in its portrayal of American forces as the good guys in a dirty war. Buzzell was drifting through college in the classic manner when he decided, in an equally classic manner, to join the army. The experience was not quite what he bargained for: he ended up spending a year in Iraq as a machine gunner. The book is based on his personal blog, and it is somewhat hard to tell how much editing it underwent on the way to hardcovers. Buzzell occasionally sounds like a borderline psycho, and the people surrounding him, such as the soldier afraid of combat who was moved from unit to unit because he was embarrassing the army but would embarrass it worse if they had to court-martial him, sometimes seem even farther gone into unknown territory. Buzzell has a fine command of the language, however, although, like many other bloggers, he rather overvalues spontaneity. It's too soon to tell whether he has written the Catch-22 or Dispatches of the Iraq War, but he has written a book that stands quite tall in the literature of that conflict to date. Roland Green

A Volunteer Soldier's Perspective On The War In Iraq

Colby Buzzell has candidly written one of the most interesting pieces of work in print today about the real life war in Iraq. This is not some "view from the top" but a look at the war from someone who fought it as a young soldier with mixed feelings about the military establishment and with solid feelings for America and our purpose there. His writing is refreshing, his humor is laugh out loud and his insight is immediately identifiable from those of us who have served our country in the military. I served 4 years on active duty with the Marine Corps from 1970-74 and left the Marines as a newly promoted Captain. Mr. Buzzell was the kind of thinker I'd loved to have had in my platoon. When presented with the mission, he gave it 100% every time, never losing his humanity and morals. For those who want to know the truth (and can handle the truth), this book is highly recommended and will come to be recognized as one of the best books to come out about this war from an infantry soldier's viewpoint. He has my respect.

I recently read Anthony Swofford's review of My War, by Colby Buzzell. Swofford, a former Marine sniper and Gulf War veteran, is the author of Jarhead, the successful memoir of his Gulf War experience, which has recently shown up on the Hollywood big screen as a top box office seller.

All in all, I think Jarhead was a fairly good read. Criticisms abound regarding the manner in which Swofford portrays the Marines-which for the most part seem to stem from people who cling to the sentiment and disillusion that all things military must be John Wayne like. There is though, an annoying overtone of whining in his account, and an even more annoying hint of supplication to the cultured academic elite (which seems to be his intended audience), as if with a wink and a nod he readily validates that echelon's misguided and misinformed perceptions and stereotypes of the military, and in particular, all-male combat culture they so disdain.

The most redeeming quality of his memoir, which was illuminated even better in the movie, is Swofford's honest portrayal of having never squeezed the trigger. In the first Gulf War, there was absolutely no substantial role for light infantry, let alone snipers. While Jarhead may be the defining account of a sniper's role in the Gulf War, it is not the defining account of the war-which will be better served by someone who directly participated in the armored blitzkrieg of a slaughter that it was (i.e., someone from the 1 out of every 14 Gulf War soldiers who actually did squeeze the trigger).

I'm not here though to focus on Jarhead, I'll leave that to the sophomore at Brown or Amherst or Dartmouth...as a former dirt soldier of the first Gulf War, I'm here to zero in on My War. I found Swofford's review of My War to not only be, pardon the pun, entirely off the mark, but startlingly offensive. The crux of his review seems to be a critique that Buzzell's writing is not seasoned and is not "literary" enough, and comes off more like a collection of blog entries...again, more supplicating, or shall I say sucking up, to his Columbia Journalism Review audience.

Buzzell's writing is indeed not seasoned, it is charred and sizzling meat plucked straight out of the fire-it'll burn you while it nourishes you. Buzzell's writing does perhaps lack some kind of literary flourish-but so what? Again, when I read Jarhead, I'm reading the witty, dry prose of a University of Iowa Writers Workshop project-when I read My War, I'm back on O.P., in the foxhole with a fellow two year enlistee dog, discussing life the way that only dirt soldiers do. When I read Jarhead, I'm sitting in a freshman creative writing class being forced to listen to a young professor read his own writing to the class in a painstakingly obvious effort to get into the pants of the freshman girls. When I read My War, its right after the last formation and I'm up on the third floor of the barracks, with my BDUs still half on but with a bottle of Mad Dog hoisted to my lips...

Swofford's various critiques are rather pointless, trifling, and somewhat irrational. He mocks the fact that Buzzell was a "typical Northern California stoner kid" who joins the Army in a typical way, complete with taking pains to pass the piss test and marrying for the extra cash...he mocks the precise beauty of this book-it's unflinching and non-judging look at the everyday realities of the common junior soldier. Who the hell does Swofford think joins the Army (or Marines for that matter)?

Furthermore, and more importantly, Swofford seems to diminish the profundity of My War. He should know better. Many a Gulf War soldier left the theatre with a nagging and certain knowledge that their experience was but a prelude of something way bigger to come...we knew we'd be back. We knew that "next time" we'd be going to Baghdad. The common rejoinder was "next time, dog, it ain't goin' to be no joke." And it has not been a joke. For those of us who did grind up Iraqi lives in our track treads the first time around, My War is captivating in a way that Jarhead never could be...we knew the desert slaughter was giving birth to the surreal urban nightmare that our soldiers now find themselves in, and Buzzell documents it for us in a language we well know.

In time, history students and lovers of the literary will look to My War as a defining first person account of the overall Army experience in the Middle East, while Jarhead will rightly be passed off as some kind of Tim O'Brian wannabe. Swofford's review reads like a severe case of penis envy.

Wow! What a GREAT read! I laughed out loud and I cried. For me, this book made me feel like I am hearing the TRUTH about Iraq...not some twisted biased media report. Mr. Buzzell is a very unique, interesting, and colorful character. He is compassionate, hysterical, sobering, and blatantly honest. I read the book in a day and will read it again. I found his work to be educational as well at thought provoking...and inspiring. He brought to light what our men and women serving our country endure on a daily basis. An Interview with an Iraqi and in Service of the Queen were profoundly moving. If you like to read a good story and want to hear some truth about Iraq from a Soldier's perspective I highly recommend it. Thank you Mr. Buzzell for serving our country and for sharing your story with us. God Bless.

Defending Angels has every element needed that makes for a great story

Imagine this: You are new in town, ready to take on your late uncle's law firm, and totally gung ho about it. You finally find a place to set up your temporary office. Unfortunately it is in the middle of a cemetery that has only murderers buried in it, and your landlady seems a bit eccentric but hey! At least the rent is cheap. You finally hire two intelligent assistants who seem to be relatively sane. Then voila, you receive that first call from someone (and not just any someone, mind you, but one of the biggest and meanest tycoons in the state) who wants you to represent them. The only problem is, when you immediately call him back, you find out that he's been dead for hours. What would you think?

Brianna Winston Beaufort (but please call her "Bree") thinks it is nothing more than a practical joke brought on by her ex-boyfriend. It just HAS to be. Either that, or everyone around her is completely crazy or it is just her that is losing it.

Bree has to figure things out before she goes mad with frustration. Who are these people she has surrounded herself with? Why are they telling her to take on dead people as clients? Why have her nightmares been coming back? And why is that painting of the cormorant coming to life? What secrets had her uncle been keeping from her about his clientèle? She begins to think that maybe it would be best if she did not bother taking on her uncle's firm.

Defending Angels has every element needed that makes for a great story. The words will captivate you while the story will haunt you. There were so many elements to this story that simply cannot be expressed without giving away too many details. Simply put this is a book that is going on my "must keep" pile.

Excellent Story

Most of the books of this genre I have read lately seem devoted to bickering between either family members or friends. This book avoided that and dealt infomatively with the subject matter. I will be looking forward to purchasing all of this author's output. It is delightful to find a book that can quote Milton, etc., and also spin a fine story.

Numerous reviews of this book are based on a hoax

The hoax is being shared around on the blogging/reblogging platform Tumblr, and contains a deliberately terrible passage that the person who posted it claims is from this book, but it is not. It's easy to confirm the fakery by searching on the phrase "dick attack" with Amazon's search inside feature. The first couple of lines of the fake passage match the last couple of lines on the first page of Chapter 17, but as soon as the page turns, it's all 100% fake. Any review of this book that mentions Tumblr or contains phrases like "dick Parkinson's" or "he entered her like a lottery" or "spongy love mounds" is based solely on the reviewer's having read a 2 to 3 page passage which does not appear in the book and was not written by Sandra Hill.

Frankly, from what I saw of the book and the reviews from some of the folks who do appear to have read the genuine article, it's probably not to my taste, but the kind of exaggeratedly bad writing displayed in the hoax is not one of its problems.

amusing Viking time travel romance

His brilliant sister UCLA professor Kirstin, an expert on ancient studies especially Vikings, asks Navy SEAL Lieutenant Torolf Magnusson what he would change if he could go back in time to an event lost in the annals of history; a little documented event say in 1020 like Steinolf claiming to be king of the Norselands after a ten year reign of terror. Torolf is happy in America, but would want to stop the madness of Steinolf.

Torolf and his SEAL teammates ride a Viking long ship in Norway when they are transported back to the early eleventh century. There he seeks the help of his childhood friend, Brunhilda "Hilda" Berdottir, a "Dark Ages feminist". He and his men find her and other strong women living in Sanctuary. As his men think it is a big ruse, Torolf begins his quest to end Steinolf's tyranny even as he and Hilda fall in love. If he succeeds on his mission, Torolf wonders about the future with Hilda, here, the twenty-first century, or will they be the ultimate star-crossed lovers.

The latest amusing Viking time travel romance sends Torolf to the past with his squad in which misunderstanding becomes the norm and the lack of coffee makes the men suffer caffeine withdrawal. The plot takes many more twists than the previous tales, which doubles the humorous fun as further time induced confusion occur. ROUGH AND READY is a jocular tale that Ms Hill's fans will laugh about with the antics of displaced people while going over the hill and back.

"Decaffeinated Corpse" is the 5th book in the Coffeehouse Mystery Series by Cleo Coyle. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book from start to finish, so much so, that I found it difficult to put down and do other things!!

What made this novel such a wonderful read is described below:

* Great Storyline That Grabs & Keeps Your Attention Throughout The Novel.
* Great Cast of Characters, Whom Are Well Developed By The Author. Plus Great Writing By Cleo Coyle.
* Lots of Red Herrings Throughout The Novel, That Keep One Guessing Who The Killer Is.
* Wonderful Dialogue Between Characters, Which Helps Move the Storyline Along & Gives The Reader More Insight Into Each Character.
* The Coffee History Written About In The Novel Was Also Fun To Read. Especially If You Are A Coffee Drinker/Lover. It Adds To The Coffee Theme Of Each Novel.

A Cuppa Joe and a good read

Cleo Coyle has once again delighted us with a fast-paced mystery using the Village Blend coffee house as the center of activity. Her charcters, including bumbling ex hubby, Matt, and her delightful octogenarian former mother-in-law as well as her wanna be future love interest, Mike Quinn,are fascinating and funny and interesting.

Sometimes, Coyle gives us more information than we would ever want to know about growing coffee beans, properly processing coffee beans and the art of serving java. But it is easy to get past those moments simply because of the story line. She never stalls or gets bogged down, and instead keeps the reader glued because of the pace.

Finding yourself with a quiet Saturday afternoon or wanting a quick read during mobility, this is the one. You will not be disappointed.

The last of the series

The Manor House Mystery series was an entertaining romp through the life of a small English village during the Second World War. An Unmentionable Murder draws everything to a conclusion with the same typical, not so difficult to solve murder mystery that has made up the rest of the series. What really makes this series enjoyable is the detail with which it portrays life during that era.

The mystery portion of this particular installment centers around the death of a not very likable man, Clyde Morgan, who, as usual, Lady Elizabeth finds reason to believe died of foul play rather than the suicide the local police are ready to write it off as. In addition, there's the sub-storyline of who's been stealing the ladies' underwear off the clotheslines around the village, Elizabeth's ongoing romance with an American Air Corp Major, and a mystery surrounding Martin, Elizabeth's sometimes senile butler.

To sum it up, if you've been following the series you'll definitely want to pick this book up to see how things end for all the residents of the Manor House. It's still okay as a stand alone story, but you'll really be lost when it comes to references of characters and/or events from previous stories.

Surprise ending! At first I felt let down, like something was missing. But then I realized that was the best way for it to end. I have read all of this series, and have really enjoyed them. I liked the WWII setting since I remember those days well. I will continue to read other of Kate Kingsbury's. books.

Loved the series and this book brought it all together. Several scenarios all in one. Village murder, village theft and war time concern is all addressed once again by Lady Elizabeth.

Peter Vronsky is an investigative journalist and a producer of documentary films for television. His work has appeared on PBS, Discovery Channel, CNN, and various international channels. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the history of criminal justice and security-intelligence at the University of Toronto.

Awesome new book on female serial killers!

The issue of feminism is only a very small part of this book: a few pages in a couple of chapters from nearly 500 pages of everything else about female serial killers! A fascinating, compelling and heavily researched study of the history, psychology, culture and sociology of female serial killers, along with some detailed case histories to back it up. The book is an excellent companion to his book on males--Serial Killers: The Method and Madness of Monsters. What I enjoy most about his books are the case studies which provide much more detailed descriptions than other general books on serial murder. There are about twenty extensive accounts of various types of female serial killers many of which go way beyond the short encyclopedic treatments so often published. I also like the way the author structures his books into several parts: history, psychology, and then case studies. You do not need to read the book from beginning to end, but can often open it at any chapter, reading it in almost any order, like a magazine. His books are more like a collection of complete articles and case studies, linked together by the common theme of serial homicide. Read together they paint a big picture of female predators. Like a smart True Detective magazine - a 'vanity fair' of true crime, women and serial homicide. Very enjoyable and readable style with a subtle edge of black humor behind it. Maybe the best new stuff written on Charlie Manson and his girls. And his take on Aileen Wuornos made me cry: it was heart-breaking true to her--a shot right between her angels and the devil. Bright new talented true crime author and a scholar too. Frightening no punches-pulled accounts of sequential female predatory aggression in all its many lipstick shades.

Thorough and fun to read

This is a good book, covering individuals from the distant past (Messalina, Elizabeth Bathory) to 19th century poisoners, Nazi death camp workers (Irma Grese), moving into recent history (the Manson girls) to modern cases as well (Karla Homolka, Aileen Wuornos). And these women I mentioned are just a few of the many, many case histories and individuals Vronksy explores.

It definitely shows that the author did his research and covers this subject more thoroughly than other books I have read on this subject. I'd definitely recommend it highly to true-crime fans. It reads well and is informative and effective, from stomach-churning transcripts of the Homolka/Bernardo videotapes to theories on why Bathory perhaps did not bathe in the blood of her many victims.

My only criticisms are that the author does focus a lot on Wuornos, as he seems to believe her to be somewhat of an anomaly amongst female murderers in terms of her motives and "style" (for lack of a better word).

Also, he goes after an activist named Phyllis Chesler for her feminist defense of Wuornos in a very aggressive way. He definitely makes some valid points against Chesler's arguments, but there is a vitriol in his words that made me feel he was somehow very personally offended by this woman: calling her a "creature", sarcastically mentioning that "we can all sleep better" knowing that Chesler has moved on to other causes. His almost venomous attack on her stood out to me in a big way while reading.

I definitely recommend this book. Very informative and entertaining.

Great book

Fantastic insight into the interplay of politics, publicity, and the PERCEPTION of female serial killers. An excellent slap at extremist feminist political portrayal of women serial murderers as "victims" with a balanced critique of this distortion. All in all, a completely unique portrayal of what could merely be sensationalist bunk. Very scholarly. Recommended for the reader who wants facts, not rumor.
