From Booklist
Johnson continues the Son of Destiny series that began with The Sword (2007). Alys, her uncle's prisoner, uses her shape-shifting talents to escape and reach Nightfall Isle, where she finds Wolfer, her closest childhood friend. In the castle she meets Kelly, the self-proclaimed Queen of Nightfall who is married to Wolfer's twin. Kelly triggered the curse around which Johnson's complex fantasy-romance series is constructed. Although the plot may be slow moving, those who love detailed lovemaking scenes will revel in the 20 pages devoted to Alys and Wolfer's first intimate encounter. Diana Tixier Herald

Jean does it again!
By Miladyblue
The Sons of Destiny is already in its second volume, and Jean does not let up in the flow of the story. This time, she can get right into the plot, without too much exposition.

This time around, the story centers around the second of the Sons of Destiny, Wolfer, who is also known as the Wolf. Largest and wildest of the brothers, it does not seem possible for any woman to tame him.

It also does not seem possible that the woman introduced here, Alys of Devries, a childhood friend, will be the one to tame him, either. A mixture of courage and shyness, she is an enigmatic contradiction that nonetheless captures his heart.

Unlike Kelly Doyle of The Sword, however, Alys is a native Katani woman with a dark secret - a connection to the brothers' hitherto unknown enemy that may just drive her and Wolfer apart.

Wolfer is a quiet loner, and the sweet, charming Alys seems to be the one made for him.

I enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed The Sword, and I am looking forward to The Master, which is due out in September of 2007.

Book two in the series. Unique storyline. Unfortunately, "Kelly" nearly ruined this story like the first.
By Alyce In Wonderland
This is the second book in an 8- part series. The first book is "The Sword". You will want to read that first. It makes a big difference in understanding "The Wolf." If you haven't read "The Sword" yet, you will find yourself quite lost.

I'm writing this review under the assumption that readers have already read "The Sword." This will prevent having to bore everyone with a reintroduction of all the characters.

Wolfer knows he is next in line to fulfill his part of the prophecy. Years ago, he fell in love with a neighbor girl named Alys. He still wears a braid of her hair around his wrist. However, the two have been denied contact since the brothers were banished to Nightfall Island.

Alys has been abused by her uncle for years. He forces her to take part in his evil spells against the Sons of Destiny. However, Alys has never given up her dream of reuniting with Wolfer. Wolfer's youngest brother has secretly kept in contact with her. When the time is right, he helps her escape her cruel uncle and make her way to Nightfall.

Wolfer and Alys are instantly attracted to one another. Neither has forgotten their past connection. Alys is afraid to admit that she took part in her uncle's schemes against Wolfer and his brothers. When the truth comes out, she fears it will end Wolfer's love for her. However, with her uncle becoming an even bigger threat to the brothers, Alys knows she must confess and help stop his evil plan to kill Wolfer and his family.

I liked this story for it's uniqueness. Jean Johnson has a talent for creativity. My only complaint is her insistence that women are not strong unless they are being nasty to their men. Kelly, from The Sword, is back in this story... ruder and snobbier than ever. Lines like "I decide what happens in MY home!" just annoy me. She seems to have forgotten that it has been the brothers' home for years, and they were kind enough to share it with her when she entered a few months ago. What is worse is the way she pushes Alys to act snotty and bossy towards Wolfer, as if it is an insult to women for Alys to be kind- hearted and easy- going.

Wolfer's character is different than it was in the first book. Instead of the quite and gentle nature he had, he is now an angry man who constantly loses his temper and storms around. I was looking forward to his story, based upon how he was written in "The Sword." So this was a bit disappointing as well.

I'm still looking forward to the next book, as I am dying to know what happened to Dominor. I'm also still anxious to read the story of the dark and mysterious Rydan. Johnson knows how to keep our interest alive.

Amazingly sensual
By Katzenjammer123
review
One of the best erotic romances I have ever read.

Dylan Ivory is an author of erotic romances and her next book is about BDSM. To get a clearer understanding of it she sets up a meeting with Alec Walker who's a dominant and also an author of dark thrillers. Dylan is fascinated by Alec at first glance but also irritated by him.
Alec is a master of domination and from the first moment of meeting Dylan he feels that their relationship will not stop with talking about BDSM but that it will be about living it. He is convinced that Dylan needs to surrender control to him to really start living and feeling. Soon afer their first sparkling meeting they are deeper into a relationship than both thought possible. Dylan as well as Alec always shied away from real and lasting relationships because of things that happened in their childhoods. So the deep feelings they developed are scaring both of them.
Will Dylan and Alec overcome their fears for a chance of a relationship filled with love and trust?

"Pleasure's Edge", the first book written by Eden Bradley under her new pen name Eve Berlin, was everything I hoped for and more. Right from the first pages on the story is incredibly erotic and it stays that way until the last page. The chemistry between Dylan and Alew is over the top and their sex scenes are amazingly hot and sensual. Sometimes there can be too much sex in a erotica so that the romance doesn't have a chance however in this book the balance feels just right.
Dylan's experience with BDSM and that she is willing to surrender after a short time was believable because of her deep feelings and issues. To see her surrender and relax was beautiful and exciting.
I liked both Dylan and Alec right from the start and enjoyed that they are both strong and go their own way. I loved the scenes in which they learned more about each other and in which you could see their vulnerable sides. All of the steps in their relationship felt real and I was happy and satisfied with how the book ended.
Dante's book is up next and I will definitely get myself a copy because Eve Berlin just knows how to write sensual and lovely erotica.

cover
I love the colour scheme and that the cover is more sensual/erotic than sexy because that fits perfectly to the book.

final appraisal
I enjoyed everything about "Pleasure's Edge" and the combination of very hot, erotic sex scenes and lovely, romantic scenes felt just perfect to me. This book captured my interest from beginning to end and never got boring. I'm already very excited for Dante's book. Eden Bradley writing as Eve Berlin is a pure pleasure for fans of erotica.

ONE BOOK ALL ROMANCE READERS NEED TO GET!!!
By Ivelisse
Really really enjoyed this book. I felt such a connection to this book, Alec reminded me of my husband with the little things he does (especially the goatee thing that I love so much). This book reminds you to live and let live, don't forget the past but leave it there and live for today. If we didn't take risk or opportunities we will never know what happens. "Pleasure's Edge" is definitely a recommend read, very emotional, gives you that feeling in the pit of your stomach that makes you turn the page over and over, could not put it down. The sex scenes are amazing and not over the top and very realistic. I can't wait to read Dante's story (half spanish, half italian *swoon*).

Pleasure's Edge by Eve Berlin
Contemporary Romance-/Erotic -Nov. 2nd, 2010
4 stars

In this story 2 strong willed people are highly attracted to each other in an extremely erotic book.

Dylan is an erotic author who wants to explore writing BDSM in her next book but feels she needs to ask a professional. She meets the sexy dominant named Alec who is attracted to Dylan and challenges her. Alec feels he can train Dylan into a submissive, not just tell her about the BDSM lifestyle. But Dylan surprises him with a counter offer. She will agree on one condition. If he cannot prove she is a submissive then he will let her dominate him!! Alec agrees. And the battle of wills between them begins!

This story is scorching, there wasn't a moment when either character wasn't thinking about the other and getting HOT under the collar! The storyline made sense and flowed well but some readers may find there is a bit too much sex! I particularly liked that Dylan and Alec are completely turned on by each other almost every waking hour. This book was very focused on each character and how they felt about the other person. It was refreshing not to have: a mystery, some sudden danger that occurs to either of the characters thrown in to `add' to the plot or another character tossed in to muddy their growing relationship. This made the story very straightforward and easy to read. Those who love sexy scenes will also love how Alec is so focused on pleasuring Dylan and making her `his.' Dylan has control issues related to her family history and letting go was a big part of her transformation that added depth to the story.

If you love hot sex with an edge you will definitely enjoy this book.

From Publishers Weekly
In her third novel, Furnivall returns to the story of Lydia Ivanova from The Russian Concubine, a Russian girl who fled the Bolsheviks and settled in Junchow, China, with her mother, who was then killed. Alone in a strange culture, Lydia learns that her father, whom she believed to be dead, is imprisoned in a labor camp. She flees China with her stepbrother, Alexei, to search for her father, leaving behind her lover, Chang An Lo, a Communist rebel. When Alexei later abandons Lydia, Lo comes to the rescue, but not before Lydia learns the terrible truth about the only family she has left. Furnivall deftly evokes the details of a bygone era, though these often take too much of a front seat and distract from Lydia's quest to find her father. Fans of Furnivall's earlier works will enjoy the chance to see what has become of Lydia. (June)

Surprisingly good
By E. Smiley
The Girl from Junchow is a rare novel: a second book that is actually better than the first. I enjoyed the first book, The Russian Concubine, but considered Furnivall's next novel a bit of a train wreck, so I came to this one with mixed feelings... and, as it turns out, was pleasantly surprised.

This book continues the adventures of Lydia, a teenage Russian refugee brought up in 1920's China, as she returns to Russia in search of her imprisoned father, accompanied by her half-brother Alexei and friend Liev Popkov. Her Chinese lover Chang An Lo puts in an appearance as well, and he's actually much improved since The Russian Concubine; he has a life now and struck me as a much more believable character than he did the first time around. We're also introduced to a new cast of secondary characters: a pleasure, since one of the things Furnivall does very well is develop the secondary cast.

The story, meanwhile, is an entertaining one, complete with crisp dialogue and a well-drawn historical setting. And Furnivall's writing style has clearly matured since The Russian Concubine as well. The biggest sticking point for me is that the plot lacks realism, with characters frequently getting out of ridiculously dangerous and difficult situations with mind-boggling ease. Nothing nature, injuries or the Soviet State throws at these characters manages to stop them for long, which dilutes the suspense and makes relating to the characters' predicaments more difficult. These quick-and-easy solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems are nothing you wouldn't see in many a fantasy novel or action-packed thriller, but they seem out of place here, when combined with much loving attention to character development and setting, not to mention the relatively slow pacing, with whole chapters devoted to character interaction.

For those who haven't read The Russian Concubine, this book should still be easy to understand; the setting has shifted from China to Russia anyway, and many old characters have fallen by the wayside. And for those who read and enjoyed the first book, I highly recommend this sequel.

A wonderful sequel
By Jennifer Rothwell
After finishing 'The Russian Concubine' two years ago I hoped and hoped that a sequel would be released. I was so excited when I heard that 'The Girl from Junchow' had been released and snatched it up immediately.
I was not disappointed. We return to the world of Lydia Ivanova and find her journeying to Russia to find her father- just as she said she would at the end of 'The Russian Concubine'. I was relieved to find that we are also kept aware of the activities of Chang An Lo, for I had found him to be an intriguing character.
The plot of this novel has been expertly woven into the context of Stalinst Russia- the way Furnivall portrays the time period is magnificent (which isn't surprising, seeing as the author dealt with aspects of Stalnist Russia in her brilliant novel 'The Red Scarf').
The story is gripping, and has not lost the thrill that was present in the first novel. Lydia's character has been developed even further, and now, after two novels, I am becoming strangely attached to this courageous protagonist.
All in all, a wonderful book.

Better than the first, but...
By Kindle Customer
I liked this book as well as the first but was quite thrown off by the convenient "Get Out Of Jail Free" card-type of escape from dangerous situations that came up time and time again. Also, the revelation that Lydia made to Chang An Lo at the end of the book regarding the deal she'd made came far too late with no foreshadowing whatsoever. It felt contrived as did a few other things in this book.

That said, it is an enjoyable read. The characters are fleshed out nicely. I enjoyed it enough to stay awake into the wee hours reading it.

Mini-Review - "The Bormann Testament" by Jack Higgins
By Alan L. Chase
Regular readers of The White Rhino Report will recognize the fact that I have become a big fan of Jack Higgins's page-turners of spy craft and adventure. In the past few months, I have offered brief reviews of several of his books, including "Dark Justice," "The Wrath of God" and "Without Mercy."

"The Borman Testament" offers an interesting backstory. During the Cold War, Higgins served in Berlin as a member of the Royal Horse Guards. In addition, an uncle of his had been held by the Nazis as a prisoner of war. Higgins developed a fascination with the Third Reich, and particularly with Hitler's right-hand man, Martin Bormann. Out of that fascination, "The Bormann Testament" was created in 1962. At that politically charged time, Higgins' publisher was reluctant to publish a fictional work about Bormann, so the character of Bormann was changed to an entirely made-up Nazi leader by the name of Schultz, and the novel was published under the title, "The Testament of Caspar Schultz."

Times have changed, the Berlin wall has fallen and Higgins felt it was time to republish this work in its original form. The action and plot of the book center around the premise and rumor that Bormann escaped from Hitler's bunker during the final days of the war, and has been living in hiding ever since. Word comes to a British publisher that Bormann has written his "Testament," naming names of Nazi collaborators, and is looking for someone to buy the manuscript through an intermediary by the name of Muller. Special agent Paul Chavasse is sent to Germany to find the manuscript, and to bring Bormann to justice - if the ex-Nazi is indeed still alive. Along the way, double agents, Israeli Nazi hunters, German police and neo-Nazi terrorists lead Chavasse and his colleagues on a merry chase. The stakes are high, since many influential business and government leaders fear that they may be named in the book as Nazi collaborators.

In his inimitable and straightforward way, Higgins dishes out death and double dealing at a double-time pace. After reading a Jack Higgins novel, I always feel as if I have completed a mad dash through the pages of the story, since I find it hard to put the book down until the last loose end in the plot has been tied up.

"The Bormann Testament" is not only a good novel; it is also a helpful reminder of the forces of human nature that made the Third Reich and the Cold War such perilous times. It is a quick and worthwhile read.

Enjoy.

1962 Reprise
By Kay's Husband
A reprinting of "The Testament of Caspar Schultz" by Martin Fallon is now called THE BORMANN TESTAMENT published under Jack Higgins' name. Since 1962 the book has lost little of its impact, being very readable. Giving evidence of what Jack Higgins was as an author then and how he has fallen off a bit in older age.

This novel takes off right from the start, and if one isn't aware of historians generally agreeing that Martin Bormann, though in the Furher bunker at the end, met his death only a few hundred yards away as he and others, after Hitler's death, tried to break out. Knowing that, however, takes nothing away from this splendidly crafted novel, for it reads as non-fiction.

I am one who prefers WWII novels from Mr. Higgins, his recent string of 5 books all of series, gets on my nerves. They have gone on far too long, and poor Hannah, as myself, just couldn't hold out. I do hope, as other reviewers too have hoped, that he returns to his earlier type writing offering us a 'dirty dozen' style WWII novel. Afterall until THE EAGLE HAS LANDED not many readers or reviewers took much note of Mr. Higgins. I always feel you need stay with what you do best.

This particular novel moves along smoothly, and is a joy to read. However, the template Mr. Higgins uses for most of his other writings is in place. We have his boss, we have the token love interest, we have the Israeli agent who works with him, and we have a plethora of bad guys, who all get theirs in the end.

Escape reading at its best, so pick up this formulaic WWII novel and enjoy a couple night's reading from the pen of Martin Fallon, er, I mean Jack Higgins. Or do I mean Harry Patterson; you know after all these years of reading Mr. Higgins's works, I am still unsure of his correct name!

Semper Fi.

Jack Higgins Classic
By kevin
Jack Higgins has a way of developing his characters with simplicity. I thoroughly enjoy his books when there are Nazis involved. And I also love his superhuman main character. In this book it is Paul Chavasse, who takes on the Nazi underground. This book is one of my favorites by Jack Higgins.

An excellent read, I loved it
By Florian Kuepfer
This is an excellent book. Superbly written.

Haney's experience as a former counter terrorism operative can be seen throughout the book: the action, the characters and the dialogue all seem very real.

I read it in a couple of days, the story draws you in and you don't want to put the book down.

Ready for more !
By C-Four-P-O
It seems the market is full of "adventure" and "international intrigue" novels by a few who have never really been in the thick of it. The ones I've received as gifts are often an unfinished donation to the local public library.

In contrast, I found Eric Haney's "No Man's Land" a welcome addition to the few who either at least research it well, like Forsyth, or those who have been there first hand, like McNabb. Haney's character in the novel reflects a maturity honed from rigorous travel and real interaction with often-misunderstood cultures and political complexities, but with a great southern gentlemanly "ease" or demeanor essential for survival when things get difficult. The world, in my humble opinion, needs a bit more of that. Well done, Mr Haney!

The first Tanner novel ROCKS.
By Bill Oterson
Mr. Haney's personal military background is evident in "No Man's Land", the first Tanner novel. The story seemed, to me anyway, to be written from the perspective of one who is familiar with the intrigue and excitement that might surround a military adventure in an exotic locale. The story is well written and progresses in a fashion that exemplifies reality: there are times when normal exists outside of the action sequences. And those moments when all hell breaks loose are well thought out and ample. The impression developed of Kennesaw Tanner, the protagonist in this first of what promises to be a series of offerings, is not of a soldier of fortune but, instead, of a mechanic: he who has the background, connections and capability to get a problem fixed and a wrong made right. This story educates the reader about Tanner and opens the door to the mystery of a young woman found dead that, almost immediately, takes on a secondary significance when we are led down a completely different path involving murder and kidnapping, and politics, in the Mideast. Later, the original mystery comes again to the focus and promises to be the source of the next installment. A maneuver that has me contemplating the next Tanner novel.

Now in paperback-a true story of hometown heroes.

In a state that prides itself on hard-hitting gridiron epics, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, was home to the greatest high school football rivalry: the Central Bucks West, captained by senior fullback/linebacker Bryan Buckley, versus the Central Bucks East, led by senior lineman Colby Umbrell.

Bryan and Colby would meet each other as opponents on the game field, but their dreams and devotion to their country led each of them to the conflict in the Middle East-Colby as an Army Ranger, and Bryan as a Marine.

Only one would make it back to Doylestown. And nothing about them, their families, or their hometown's connection to football would ever be the same

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. With the biggest high school football rivalry in Pennsylvania as his backdrop, Sielski tells the tale of two opposing Doylestown, Penn. players who each abandoned gridiron dreams to fight in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Central Bucks West senior captain Bryan Buckley and Central Bucks East senior Colby Umbrell, two standout players, graduated in 1999 to pursue collegiate (and possibly professional) ball careers. After Sept. 11, 2001, they were both inspired to abandon sports and serve their country, Buckley with the Marines and Umbrell with the Army Rangers. Both deployed to the Middle East in 2006, but only one survived, a tragedy that shook the idyllic Philadelphia suburb to its core. Local sportswriter Sielski (How to Be Like Jackie Robinson) recreates prep football games, military training and war-time battles in rich detail, based on dozens of interviews, letters and e-mail correspondence. Leagues deeper than most sports stories, this Friday-night-lights tale unfolds into a moving study of war's transforming effect on individuals, families and communities.

About the Author
Mike Sielski is the sports columnist for Calkins Media, a daily newspaper chain in suburban Philadelphia. The Newspaper Association of America named him one of the 20 best newspaper people under age 40 in the nation.

The Best of America
By BeeGee
This book and it's author bring to you what is great about the people of this country. Children who are raised by parents who instill in them what is good and bad, right and wrong. And raise them to make choices as adults that bring out the best in themselves. But it is also about the people we surround our children with, who influence their lives in a positive way. We raise them, teach them and let them go. These children we raise choose their paths by the example that has been set and these two boys did both their families and their country proud.

This was purchased as a gift for my children who attended Doylestown high schools but now live States away. It was like coming home through the pages of the book. I have recommended this to many people, who in turn have ordered it, recommended it and created more sales of Fading Echoes. Even in-laws who know nothing of the local characters, have found this to be well worth reading.

compelling story, poorly written
By Kevin Murphy
The story of these two young men is, indeed, compelling. In the hands of this author, though, getting through it is like walking through a swamp. The first half is filled with an inane level of detail concerning the high school football careers of each player. Unfortunately, their high school football careers are just not that interesting. One played for a good team, the other for a mediocre one in a part of the country where high school football is important. One of the coaches is a mini Vince Lombardi for whom football is life. There is enough play by play of essentially meaningless games to last a lifetime in this book.

If you make it through the first half, the second half partially makes up for the pain inflicted in the first. Both of these young men willingly undertook a dangerous but important mission. That one ultimately paid with his life is a tragedy too often repeated. The best parts of the book, not surprisingly, are the sections composed of Umbrell and Scott's diaries--their stories told in their words. Ultimately, this is a compelling and tragic story rendered almost unreadable by an author in over his head.

Plunge deep into the suspense...
By Duaa Anwar
This is a first class page-turner with non-stop action...unpredictable, psychological, and traumatic on your nerves. Although this is one of Dean Koontz's first books, it doesn't lack the suspense which he weaves into every page of his writing. From the very first page, his characters, Joanna Rand and Alex Hunter, took an almost tangible form in an exotic setting that was very realistically painted.
The plot was enhanced by being set in Japan. Joanna Rand, a successful business owner, is plagued by crippling phobias that prevent her from leading a normal life. Alex Hunter crosses paths with her during his visit to Japan and finds her situation intruiging. Since he is a detective, he recalls her as a missing person he had been looking for many years earlier. While trying to uncover her story, he discovers that there's a deeper and more frightening dimension to her history.
The story is so gripping that I was reading like a machine. At one point I almost got hypnotized myself while reading a scene where the character is hypnotized. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the book took a political twist at the end. I must admit, though, that I was gritting my teeth down to the very last word. Very intense and well worth reading.

A different type of Koontz novel...
By Freddy Jones
Joanna Rand left America ten years ago, and is now the owner of a nightclub in Kyoto, Japan. The one thing that she could not leave behind however, is a terrifying nightmare that she has on a nightly basis involving a man with steel fingers. When Joanna wakes up, she feels physically violated and terrified beyond comprehension. A private detective named Alex Hunter is vacationing in Kyoto and becomes instantly captivated with Joanna. However, he also knew that he had seen Joanna before in news photographs of a senator's daughter who had dissapeared 10 years ago. Alex becomes determined to help awaken Joanna to the fact that she is not who she thinks she is, and that her life, her memories, and her mind had been created for her.
The Key to Midnight is definately a different type of Koontz novel. He usually specializes in horror and suspense. That is why I was very unsure about reading this book. However, as soon as I began, I knew that it would turn out to be one of the best Koontz books that I ever read. The book is an extremely well written and action packed chase novel. The story is paced extremely well because you learn about Joanna's past and why her life was messed with, slowly over the course of the story. You are also kept on the edge of your seat, because there are many different people who do not want Joanna to discover the truth. This book really emphasizes the phrase "trust no one" because anybody could be in on it. Koontz also does a wonderful job of illustrating the different countries that the story takes place in.
Overall, The Key to Midnight is one of Koontz's best books. It is an action packed chase novel filled with paranoia, conspiracies, and many great characters.

Great ending but.......
By Kevin Gregory
This is an interesting book becouse it shows Koontz going off in a different direction. As he states in the books Afterword, this is his only novel in the Acion/suspence/romance genre. Actually I thought it was trying to be in the same genre of most of James Patterson books. The probem I found with the book was that it developed too slowly. We have the same unanswered questions on page 360 as we had in the beginning. It's not until the book has as few as 50 pages left does it really get going. Descriptions of mundane activities is fine. It ads color and depth to the charactors but I thought it was excessive here. They got out of the cab, went to the museaum, checked into a hotel, made a phone call, blah blah blah. Thankfully the whole story gets turned around and it reallly has a stunning conclusion, but it was hard for me to get there. Interesting read, but I found books like Intensity, and Sole Survivor much more interesting.
