Review
“Another searing, delicious book. Daegan has a sensual menace that is blazingly erotic, and his relationship with Gideon is electric in its intensity. Anwyn's struggle to deal with her vampirism and resulting mental illness completely enthralled me. One of the hallmarks of a fabulous writer is the ability to make you feel the eroticism in things you wouldn't normally find erotic. I never really got turned on by m/m romances until I read Vampire Trinity.”--Angela Knight

Injustice Reigns Supreme
By Globe Reader
I usually love Joey Hill's books and writing style. But this time in spite of her talent, the story made me really angry. I should have stopped at Vampire Mistress and left it that. I found the story cruel and at times very difficult to read. I fell in love with Vampire Hunter Gideon Green's tortured and complex soul in the first two Vampire Queen's books. Just like his brother Jacob he had the most wonderful Alpha Male qualities, for all his rough exterior he maintained an under the surface vulnerability and quiet tenderness about him. But unlike his brother, who is granted freedom and reprieve from the cruelties of the vampire world -- not to mention a just reward for his efforts on behalf of his Mistress Lyssa-- Gideon is thrown to the wolves.

In my opinion Gideon is a beautiful soul, a true knight in shining armor, who will do whatever it takes to protect his lady, Mistress Anwyn in this story. He has decided to accompany her to the Vampire Council assisting Daegan, the third member of their triad, in their efforts to validate Mistress Anwyn's fledgling vampire status. Appearing at the Vampire Council as a third marked servant is highly dangerous for an ex vampire hunter such as Gideon. Suddenly it is Gideon's burden to demonstrate his Mistress abilities to control him. With his pain, blood and humiliation he must make it clear to the Council members that he is "salvageable" material, and that his Mistress has reduced him to the proper status of an obedient human slave/servant. Gideon pays and handsomely, on the night before his appearance to the Council and during their "special" dinner event.

This book is supposed to be about healing and redemption for all three members of the trio, Anwyn, Daegan and Gideon. Anwyn and Daegan receive theirs, but even though Gideon is the "real glue" that keeps this trio together, he is hardly treated with the respect he so richly deserves, nor is he truly cherished for it. Instead, in order for Gideon to receive the acceptance he is desperate for, or to feel the sense of belonging his soul needs, he must toe the line. After all his sacrifices and heroic acts, one would think he would receive some respect within this trio, oh no, he has to accept the terms of obedience set forth by Mistress Anwyn or leave. Mistress Anwyn claims to understand that Gideon is not a submissive but she wants his willing submission...What? However, the bond established between a Vampire and a Third marked servant is not easily broken, specially for the human servant who is left with a broken heart and soul after the separation. In the end for Gideon to receive a semblance of happiness, he has to pay again, he must submit (willingly, right?) he must be stripped of every inch of independence and every trait that made him a glorious Alpha male. He must be reduced to the role of a submissive pet/slave/servant for these two selfish, demanding and arrogant Vampires. What a shame, I am going to need a few days to shake off the sense of injustice in this story.

This is not the typical romance but one for readers who enjoy a lot of spice and dark fantasy.

Vampire Trinity (Vampire Queen) by Joey W. Hill
Erotic Paranormal Romance- Sep 7, 2010
4 stars

Joey Hill does it again. Her vampire series pushes the edge and is certainly not for any reader who likes 'tame' romance.

Anwyn is a newly turned vampire. One who was turned against her will. She is part of a young vampire triad. The 2 other members are a vampire hunter named Gideon who wants his independence from the triad and a powerful and seductive vampire named Daegan. Anwyn cares for Gideon but realizes he doesn't not want to be her vampire servant and he definitely doesn't want to be in a relationship with another man! Anwyn and Daegan want to prove him wrong. But, Daegan has left their group and won't come back until Anwyn asks him to. He understands Anywn has emotional scars that she needs to overcome before she accepts him and becoming a vampire. Gideon's past as a vampire hunter has also come haunt them as the Vampire Council seeks retribution for his kills. But will Gideon bow down to them and become a vampire servant? Will they be able to have a lasting relationship or will their pasts and emotional scars tear them apart?

The author does not hold back as she goes straight into the life style of BDSM. This story was imaginative and lush but not for the faint of heart. There are ménage scenes and situations in the story are not always cut and dried and even coerced. Joey Hill explores the dark, sexy and unconventional alternative lifestyle. Anwyn is a dominatrix or mistress and both her men are also dominant men. While a large part of this book does include sex it also features characters that are 3 dimensional. They all have a deep pain in their past that makes them sympathetic. Particularly Gideon who was a strong vampire hunter and now is the submissive in their triad. Can he accept the Anwyn and Daegan for being vampires and accept them even if he does want them? I also enjoyed that the author delves deep into the vampire society and it was interesting to read about the vampire hierarchy and politics.

Complex, gritty and edgy. This is not the typical romance but one for readers who enjoy a lot of spice and dark fantasy.

Inner Demons are worse than Vampires
By pearls
Once again, Joey W. Hill has created a story that delves into the inner conflicts of her characters, stripping away their defenses and exposing their vulnerability sharper than any nakedness could do. In Vampire Trinity, she continues the journey of Gideon, Anwyn, and Deagan. Their less than orthodox relationship created under the dire circumstances in Vampire Mistress evolves into a complicated dance as each comes to terms with balancing the consequences and roles within the new relationship. Deagan, the warrior, must allow himself to be saved. Anwyn, the Mistress, must come to terms with her weaknesses, even as her new vampire strengths and desires assert themselves. And Gideon must come to terms with past before moving on to his future. United in their show of strength towards the Vampire Council, they develop a bond that is greater than blood and stronger than the demons that threaten their individual psyches. But is it strong enough to sustain a relationship that none of them truly understands?

This installment of the Vampire Queen series is heartbreaking in its ability to be raw and gritty, true to Gideon's character. Mason and Jessica, Lyssa and Jacob--each had their inner demons to face. But the first was romantic and the second fantasy. Gideon and Deagan are warriors and Anwyn has been savagely raped. Hill kept her characters true to their roots and their stories individually were enough to fill a tragic play, but all three together created a maelstrom of emotion, ripping at the reader. Just when things would start to get comfortable--BAM--reality would rear its ugly head again. Who would stay and who would go, how horrible would the Council treat them, could Gideon accept the new Anwyn, could he accept his role alongside Deagan? All these questions are answered with nothing held back. The honesty each is forced to face along the journey is painstaking. The eroticism between them is hot and explosive, and I often found it a metaphor for the baring of their souls more than a love scene (as Jacob had in a Vampire Queen's Servant). A great addition to the Joey W. Hill library.

Sue Grafton and Robert B. Parker: Author One-on-One
In this Amazon exclusive, we brought together blockbuster authors Sue Grafton and Robert B. Parker and asked them to interview each other.

Sue Grafton is the New York Times-bestselling author of the beloved Kinsey Millhone mystery series, which continues to delight millions of readers across the globe. Read on to see Sue Grafton's questions for Robert B. Parker, or turn the tables to see what Parker asked Grafton.

Grafton: During your career, you've generally worked as a solo writer. Aside from your collaboration with Raymond Chandler (quite dead), how did you enjoy the experience of writing with your wife, Joan? I notice a long break between Three Weeks in Spring, which was published in 1978, and A Year at the Races, which was published in 1990.

Parker: Joan is an idea person more than a writer. She has done a lot of uncredited thinking for me. But Three Weeks in Spring, about her first bout with breast cancer, was a special case. And A Year at the Races, also nonfiction, was about our initiation into the world of thoroughbred racing. I have found it wise for me to write and Joan to think (egad, what if it were the other way?), but I have also found it wise not to speak for her. I liked working with her. In fact, I like pretty much everything with her.

Grafton: I notice in your bibliography that you wrote a nonfiction book called Parker on Writing. I'd be interested in reading it, but I decided I couldn't afford the $499.99 the book is selling for online. How do you feel about a reprint? (P.S. This is not a sly hint that you should send me a copy….)

Parker: Parker on Writing is a collection of random items loosely about writing that Herb Yellin at Lord John Press collected into a finely manufactured limited edition. Herb is a friend, and given what he paid, I can convincingly say it was affection not money that captured me. I feel fine about a reprint…. If I have an extra I will send you one, but I'll have to look—it’s quite possible that I don't.

Grafton: I'm curious about your experience in writing Chasing the Bear: A Young Spenser Novel. What prompted you to write about Spenser's early life? Did you learn things about him you hadn't known before?

Parker: My publisher, agent, and wife all wanted me to try a YA novel. I did three, culminating, at my publisher's request, with Chasing the Bear. Since I knew a great deal about Spenser's adulthood, it was mostly a matter of jacking up the adulthood and sliding a consistent childhood under it. YA novels are hard because you know a great deal that you can't use.

Grafton: I saw the movie Appaloosa last night on DVD, and while I haven't had a chance to read the novel and study the two side by side, I got the impression that the movie was close to what you had in mind. Will you write about Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch again? You did seem to leave the door open to that possibility.

Parker: I’ve written two sequels to Appaloosa (Resolution and Brimstone) and am finishing up a third (Blue-Eyed Devil). Ed Harris did a wonderful job, I thought, with the movie. It is as close as it could possibly be to the book, and those parts that had to be added are hard for me to tell from my own stuff. Harris is genius, as is Viggo [Mortensen]—they nailed the characters and the relationship. You can also take Ed Harris's word—in your own adventures in Southern California you may have noticed how infrequent that is. Incidentally, Bragg's lawyer in the courtroom scene was played by the great Daniel T. Parker.

Grafton: How do you spend your time when you're not writing? Hobbies? Leisure activities? I'm not very good at having fun, but I'm hoping you are. Please advise.

Parker: My friend John Marsh once remarked, "I hate fun." I concur. Mostly, I just live my life, which turns out to be fun. I work out, box with a trainer, watch ball games, go out to dinner with Joan. You've met Joan. We’ve been married fifty-three years. Now that's fun.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Parker makes producing snappy banter look easy in his 37th Spenser novel (after Rough Weather). He also manages to draw new readers into the Boston PI's major personal relationships—with love interest Susan Silverman and friend/ally/bodyguard Hawk—without shoveling on the backstory. Spenser agrees to help a quartet of married women fend off extortion demands from stud Gary Eisenhower, with whom each has had an affair. Meanwhile, the husband of one of the women under blackmail threat hires some thugs to deal with the matter. The action takes its time getting to a dead body, but, as usual, the smooth, entertaining prose more than compensates for any deficiencies of plot. The absence of major personal developments for Spenser or his associates marks this as a less memorable entry than others in this iconic series, but it remains a solid, enjoyable contemporary detective novel. The Perfect Book with Which to Spend a Cool Fall Weekend
By Bookreporter
The 37th installment of Robert B. Parker's series featuring the detective with no first name opens with Spenser in familiar surroundings. He's alone in his Boston office when a woman shows up in need of his services. This may seem familiar to fans of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, who introduced us to their famous fictional detectives, Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, respectively, in a similar manner. But while the opening seems the same, Parker has taken the PI novel much further than his renowned predecessors ever did as he reinvigorates the somewhat stilted genre.

Longtime fans will find much to enjoy in THE PROFESSIONAL. The case appears straightforward: the woman who arrives in his office is a lawyer representing four rich married women who are all having affairs with the same man, Gary Eisenhower. Their husbands are older men in prominent positions. Eisenhower blackmails them with audio and video evidence of their trysts. Spenser starts investigating the case right away. He states, "But there was something wrong with the whole setup. Everything kept turning out not quite what it started out seeming to be." Something is awry, a staple of detective fiction, but Parker brings everything to a new level with his latest Spenser story,

One of the things that throws a curveball into the case is that not only is Eisenhower not afraid of the cops, but none of the alleged victims of the crime are willing to press charges. And at least one woman sees no reason not to keep sleeping with Eisenhower! Since Spenser does not take money to rough up people or bump them off, the case is apparently at a dead end. He wishes the women good luck and leaves. But as fans know, Spenser just cannot let go as he tells the reader, "Nobody was paying me to do anything. On the other hand, nobody was paying me to do nothing, either. Business was slow. I was nosy. And I had kind of a bad feeling about this long running mess that I'd wandered into and hadn't done a lot to improve." And soon, dead bodies start popping up in true hard-boiled fashion, and Spenser's choice to stay involved is cemented.

Due to Parker's adept writing, the reader can't turn away, either. Parker is called the dean of crime fiction, a title he richly deserves. He is a true master. Each Spenser book offers a clinic on how to write a fast-moving, entertaining novel. The chapters are short, the scenes are cinematic, the dialogue is crisp, and the writing is something both Hammett and Chandler would have tipped their hats to. Consider this:

"I sat at the bar and ordered a beer. The bartender was a red-haired woman with an angular face and skin you could strike a match on."

It does not get much better than that. Parker possesses the great writer's knack that he actually makes writing look simple when it's really not. This series has taken the detective novel into a new millennium. His plots could have been ripped from the headlines: powerful people caught in webs of sexual intrigue. But his real contribution to the genre is that the Spenser novels in recent years have recognized that it is no longer just about good guys and bad guys. Today, we live in a world with all sorts of shades of gray and the real bad guys are often insulated in corporate and financial towers. Parker does not just give us paint-by-numbers genre books but novels in which he layers complications upon complications. And sometimes justice is imperfect, and our hero has to do the best he can and move on.

THE PROFESSIONAL is the perfect book with which to spend a cool fall weekend. May Robert B. Parker continue to give us our yearly visit from Spenser for many years to come. We could not ask for more.

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "SEXUALLY... SPENSER & SUSAN ARE LEGENDS IN THEIR *OWN-MIND*!
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
Sadly the days of the hard hitting... hard shooting... unyielding... snappy repartee... private detective Spenser... are no more. The former "MAN'S-MAN" who spent untold hours with the tough rough-edged men on both sides of the law... is now more content to exchange double-entendre's with the always annoying Susan. In between the relentless honey-dripping dialogue in which Spenser constantly reminds the reader Ad Nauseam that Susan is the most beautiful woman in the world and would look like a runway model even if she wore a ten-year-old unwashed mechanics uniform... Susan dutifully returns serve to Spenser... by unrelentingly jogging the reader's memory as to Spenser being the stud of all studs. And of course for experienced Spenser fans you know it has to be stated at least three times per "short-story" that assuredly Susan has a Ph.D. from Harvard. The concept of the crime to be investigated that this saga is built around is hard to swallow. A female lawyer approaches "Stud" Spenser representing four rich women who all have a similar M.O. They married rich older men... and they're all having adulterous sex with the same man Gary Eisenhower. And now Gary whose real name in a prior life was Goran Pappas is blackmailing all of them with sex tapes of their escapades. Even for a light hearted Spenser tale the fact that all four women still want to keep the amorous affairs alive seems farfetched. Where all credibility dissipates is when for some unknown reason Spenser takes a liking to Eisenhower/Pappas.

Parker dutifully reaches into his extensive collection of former notorious Spenser characters... if not physically in the non-action... they are at least mentioned by reputation... such as... Rita Fiore, Tony Marcus, Junior, Ty-Bop, Vinnie Morris, Chollo, Frank Belson and Quirk among others. But as is Parker's wont of late... they're not given any hard exciting action.

And of course there is everybody's favorite *HAWK*. If a character could miraculously come to life... Hawk would have an unbeatable lawsuit against Spencer for reasons of neglect and emasculation. Hawk has become nothing but a chauffeur and sometime babysitter... along with being "eye-candy" and the immediate desire of any woman in any situation... except when Susan is raining studly double entendre's on her snookums... that big hunk Spenser. A full literary character castration is performed on Hawk when he has a book at a bar and Spenser says: "WHAT'S THE BOOK?" Hawk responds: "THE NEW ONE BY JANET EVANOVICH." Oy vey! Parker's use of Hawk in the last few years is equivalent to having a souped-up Ferrari locked in your garage that is never taken out on the street.

Long time Spenser fans won't be shocked when I tell you that once again Spenser won't quit a case even when he's no longer being paid... thank goodness Susan has a paying job and in case you forgot from the three times you are told that she has a "Ph.D. from Harvard"... late in the book she also says: "IF I WEREN'T A SOPHISTICATED PSYCHOTHERAPIST WITH ADVANCED DEGREES FROM HARVARD, I MIGHT BE FAINTLY SHOCKED."

How about a stand-alone series for Hawk? I'm sure we'd all love it, *WE'D BE FOOLS NOT TO!*

From Publishers Weekly
Action, betrayal, murder and mayhem have long been the staples of Jack Higgins's international thrillers featuring ex-IRA enforcer turned British operative Sean Dillon, and this latest outing continues that tradition. However, Dillon falls into more of a supporting role in a story involving the current Russian regime's efforts to bring forth a new type of cold war. Most of the heavy lifting is performed by the seemingly mild-mannered MP Harry Miller, who, like Dillon, is in reality a British secret agent. Michael Page's narration keeps the action flowing, all the while balancing an international cast of heroes and rogues. Whether the characters are Russian politicos or Irish thugs, British elites or Islamic terrorists, Page provides each with their own particular voice. With a dry, straightforward delivery, he is equally adept in presenting the intricate, globe-trotting plot, driving the story forward and maintaining the taut suspense. Fans of this enduring series will not be disappointed. A Putnam hardcover (Reviews, June 23). (Sept.)

From Booklist
Member of Parliament Harry Miller is also a troubleshooter for the prime minister. When the PM sends Miller to Kosovo, he discovers uniformed Russian soldiers about to set fire to a village mosque, and he shoots their young commanding officer in the head. This rough justice reverberates through the Kremlin, and acts of revenge begin across Europe and the Middle East. Higgins posits a neocon nightmare to buttress his plot: the Evil Empire is using its oil reserves to “addict” Western Europe and succoring terrorists of every stripe to create widespread chaos. Countering the Russians and all the terrorists are a number of characters that have appeared in earlier Higgins novels, including onetime IRA member Sean Dillon. Dillon and Miller are hard guys who elude death and seem to never miss a head shot. The action is nonstop, but the characters are paper-thin, and the dialogue is often leaden. Higgins is clearly off his game here, but he still has many loyal fans, who will be excited at the prospect of something new from one of their favorites. --Thomas Gaughan

tense suspense thriller
By A Customer
On the surface Harry Miller is an ordinary person; an MP who is in realty the counterpart to Blake Johnson, the American President's top security man. Blake runs the black ops group the Basement, a unit that works outside the law to administer justice and protect the country and its people. Blake and Harry met in Banu, Kosovo; each was there to inspect the country's leaders and to prevent a Russian Officer Igor Zorin from torching a mosque that would have reignited the fighting.

President Putin and his right hand man Ivan Volkov decide Miller should be taken out and assign the mysterious the Broker, who has never been seen, to contact Michael Quinn, a former IPPI agent. Quinn contacts one of his agents to take out the MP. Miller knows he is under surveillance and being stalked, but takes out the contact killer. He also insures that a plutonium shipment by boat is carefully monitored and tracked all the way. Putin knows that Miller with Major Ferguson's people were responsible (the British version of the Basement) and wants him dead. The plan works only the wrong person dies; Miller with Ferguson's help will not rest until all those involved in the assassination plot are dead.

Suspense grandmaster Jack Higgins writes another fascinating tense thriller that is loaded with action. Yet with all the non--stop action, the story line also contains the political realties of the world today with insight into Muslim fundamentalists, Russia's efforts to return to superpower status, the NATO response, and the fragile peace in several places like Northern Ireland. However, as always is the case in a Mr. Higgins' thriller, his key characters seem real even when they perform seemingly surreal stunts; and yes cold blooded killer Sean Dillon is in the middle of the maelstrom.

Sean Dillon Meets Two Interesting New Characters
By Donald Mitchell
If you like thrillers that feature Sean Dillon, you won't like this book as much as I did. Sean doesn't have a very large role.

If you like Sean Dillon as the unrepentant avenger, you won't like this book as much as I did. Sean shows a vulnerable side.

If you feel that the Sean Dillon books need some interesting new characters, you'll feel like Rough Justice provides a badly needed breath of fresh air.

If you wish that Jack Higgins would stop matching his avengers against the same bad guys, you'll be disappointed that Higgins goes over a lot of old ground in Rough Justice.

So what's it all about?

President Jake Cazelet's point man, Blake Johnson, is back early from Kosovo to report that the Russians are stirring the pot. He also tells a provocative tale about running into a British MP, Major Harry Miller, there who shot and killed Russian Captain Igor Zorin after Zorin molested a young woman. Cazelet tells Charles Ferguson, the PM's point man, that he should get to know Miller. Ferguson is intrigued and the two team up . . . with significant consequences.

Zorin is well connected in Russia and President Putin is alerted to his death. Although it's best to bury the incident, Putin doesn't like the interference with his plans to extend Russian influence.

From there, we learn a lot about Miller who has been an undercover agent for many years, beginning in Northern Ireland. In fighting skills, he's a lot like Dillon . . . but there the similarities end. Miller is married to a famous actress who doesn't know what he really does for a living. She expects him to attend nightly performances which he does his best to sandwich in between sanctions. As Miller's activities for Ferguson increase, the marriage's roots are shaken. Fortunately, Miller can rely on his sister, Monica, for sympathy and support.

Miller is a lot like Dillon: Shoot first and sort out the consequences later. As a result, his actions cause an escalation in tensions between the Russians and the British . . . and escalation that has personal consequences when he becomes a target.

In the background, a shadowy figure called the Broker is pulling the puppet strings to do the Russians' will . . . but not getting very good results. What will be the consequences for him?

Before the book is over, there's a classic battle in a familiar setting.

I thought that Rough Justice was the best Sean Dillon book in many years. The book was a little less predictable and contained two interesting characters, Major Miller and his sister, that were reasonably well developed by describing their deeds and words. The book's ending also suggests good things for future books in the series.

When a series starts to go downhill, it normally just keeps doing so. I am pleased to see new life breathed into what had become a series that offered too little variety and surprise.

A weekend with old friends
By Andy Wallace
I just finished reading Rough Justice, the 15th book in the series featuring Sean Dillon as a reformed IRA terrorist now acting on behalf of the British Prime Minister. It is probably the 12th or 13th one I have read in the series, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Having read the previous books in the series, I am very familiar of the cast of characters, several of whom are among my favorites. Each Higgins story is free standing, and very entertaining. I would not want to read this book if it were my first exposure to Higgins. Trying to catch up to all the characters all these years into his work would be nearly impossible.
I look forward to the next installment.

View our feature on J.D. Robb’s Eve Dallas series.

Eve Dallas has a grisly double homicide to solve when two young lovers—both employees of the same prestigious accounting firm—are brutally killed on the same night. It doesn't leave Eve a lot of leftover time to put together a baby shower for her buddy Mavis, but that's supposedly what friends are for.

Now Mavis needs another favor. Tandy Willowby, one of the moms-to-be in Mavis's birthing class, didn't show up for the shower. A recent emigrant from London, Tandy has few friends in New York, and no family—and she was really looking forward to the party. And when Eve enters Tandy's apartment and finds a gift for Mavis's shower wrapped and ready on the table—and a packed bag for the hospital still on the floor next to it—tingling runs up and down her spine.

Normally, such a case would be turned over to Missing Persons. But Mavis wants no one else on the job but Eve—and Eve can't say no. She'll have to track Tandy down while simultaneously unearthing the deals and double-crosses hidden in the files of some of the city's richest and most secretive citizens, in a race against this particularly vicious killer. Luckily, her multimillionaire husband Roarke's expertise comes in handy with the number crunching. But as he mines the crucial data that will break the case wide open, Eve faces an all too real danger in the world of flesh and blood.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in New York City in 2060, bestseller Roberts's latest police thriller under her Robb pseudonym in her Lt. Eve Dallas series (Naked in Death, etc.) offers her usual engaging characters. Dallas's investigation of the brutal murders of Natalie Copperfield, a 26-year-old accountant, and Copperfield's boyfriend becomes entangled with the search for Tandy Willowby, a pregnant friend who mysteriously vanishes shortly before her due date. Dallas discovers that Copperfield had stumbled on some white-collar fraud at her high-profile accounting firm, while Willowby's disappearance may be part of a series of abductions. Predictably, the two cases converge, and the mystery's solution becomes obvious. Newcomers, who may be dismayed at how little things will have changed in more than 50 years, would do better to start with earlier books in this near-future suspense series. (Nov.)

Dallas methodically cuts through her twin cases with barely a hitch, but she's such a prickly-sharp, memorable character (one of many, in fact), you'll enjoy watching her do it. -- Entertainment Weekly, November 9, 2006

We finally see Mavis have her baby
By Desdemona
The best part of this book is the very end, where Mavis has her baby. You knew she would by the title of the book, and we've waited a long time for this event. The mystery isn't up to the usual J.D. Robb standards, but since we're more focused on the arrival of little Apricot or Radish (yes, Mavis is still trying out improbable names right to the very end), you can forgive the transparency of the mystery. I was somewhat disappointed that all the usual characters make an appearance - Mira, Feeney, Trina, etc.- but you get to spend very little time with them. The scenes of Roarke and Eve attending childbirth classes and then the real deal are what you are paying for here, and I was pretty satisfied. I won't spoil it and tell you if the baby is a boy or a girl, but I will say that Mavis and Leonardo don't name the baby Apricot, thankfully. And Sommerset's actions in the delivery room will make you sniffle, but I won't spoil that, either:)

In my opinion, though, the best scene(s) in terms of furthering the relationship of Eve & Roarke and the subject of her work deal with Eve's investigation into the death's of Nat & Bick, two employees of a high profile accounting firm. Because of the type of investment information that will be included in the investigation, Whitney gives Eve an official warning about inside information learned during the investigation being used by the competition (i.e. Roarke). Whew, does it hit the fan! Both between Eve & Whitney, Eve & Roarke, and then Roarke & Whitney. I think that will have some interesting repercussions later on down the line...

Hello, Baby!
By Cherise Everhard
This is the 27th book in the In Death Series.
This story begins with Eve and Roarke at birthing class with Mavis and Leonardo. It is the funniest first chapter ever. At this class they meet Tandy, a single mother to be from London. Mavis and Leonardo have befriended her and are to be her birthing coaches.
Dallas catches a double homicide of an accountant and her fiance. All signs point to her finding something off at work.
As this mystery deepens, Tandy pulls a no show at Mavis' shower. It looks like no one has seen her for a few days. Eve promises Mavis she will find Tandy. Eve, Roarke, Peobody and McNab are working double time to solve these two mysteries.
This was a good story. It was funny and touching. I started the book laughing and ended it crying. I thought the mystery was good. But I was bummed we had to wait for the baby til the last chapter. I liked how Eve and Roarke reacted in the birthing room. It was interesting to see how everything played out and I don't think Eve and Roarke fans will be disappointed.

Congratulations, it's a ....? And circles within circles
By Valerie Matteson
I really enjoyed this book 100%. There was lots of fun such as in the beginning where we join Eve and Roarke who are with Mavis and Leonardo at one of her birthing classes. What a hoot!! They also meet some other pregnant friends of Mavis' including Tandy who works at the White Stork, a baby store. They leave the class and take Mavis, Leonardo and then Tandy home. That night, Eve gets a call to go to a murder scene. A young woman who is an accountant at a very prestigious firm is found by her sister, tied up, tortured and strangled. The sister, Palma, knows that Natalie was engaged to a young man who also worked at the accounting, Bick Byson. Eve tries to contact him and soon finds that Bick has also been beaten and killed. From Natalie's links they soon get the gist that she had found something that she was excited/nervous about and that she had most likely told her fiance as well.

In the meantime, Eve with a great deal of help from Peabody is having to make sure all is ready for the baby shower she is throwing for Mavis on Saturday!! Peabody goes with her to pick out Eve's gift to the mother-to-be and they end up at Tandy's shop where she helps them find a great rocking chair/vibrating chair that Mavis had registered for. It is hilarious as Eve feels so nervous around the women in the store that are so advanced in their pregnancies.

As Eve interviews Bick and Natalie's bosses at the accounting firm and gathers evidence, the day of the shower arrives and the party is successful -- Eve even has a good time. However, one problem is that Mavis' friend Tandy did not come. Mavis enlists Eve's help (so she has to to a dance with the Missing Persons division) to find her friend as they go to Tandy's apartment and there is no sign of foul play.

I felt the excitement and twists and turns and Eve solves BOTH murder and missing person cases really kept me on edge and guessing "whodunit". There is also much love and understanding between Eve and Roarke as politics tries to get in the way of Roarke helping Eve solve the case and as memories are brought back to both of them due to the circumstances of Tandy's disappearance.

Altogether a great read with plenty of humor and fun and romance and mystery and suspense!!

From Publishers Weekly
Impelled by Oprah to wonder if people can really control their own destinies, Brain, Child magazine cofounder Niesslein binges on the advice of bestselling self-help books. She delves into feng shui expert Karen Kingston's decluttering tips and techniques to spiritually cleanse the home using bells and holy water. She explores the genius of relationships maven Dr. Laura Schlessinger at pushing the right emotional buttons (is Niesslein guilty of making her husband feel he's not a priority in her life?). The self-improvement experts can't help Niesslein expel her stubborn six-year-old from the bed he's been happily sharing with his parents; Dale Carnegie's and Dear Abby's advice on cultivating friends and becoming popular make her feel both superficial and exhausted; and Jorge Cruise's eight-minute exercise workout is "like throwing a few lima beans in a hot fudge sundae." Although she touches on hot spots that concern most readers—family, home, health and finances—the self-help book angle feels contrived and stale, the jokey self-deprecation forced and some of Niesslein's analyses are tedious, such as a chapter on financial freedom that devolves into a primer on Roth IRAs and mutual funds. Funny and thought-provoking
By K. Plonsky
I really looked forward to this book since I love the magazine that Jennifer Niesslein helped create, Brain Child. I was not disappointed. This is a funny book, and I laughed many times. For instance, here is the author, describing her imagined discussion with a Catholic priest: "I tried to picture the exchange between us, but the furthest I could get was a cartoon version of me standing before a cartoon version of him. We would have thought bubbles above our heads. Mine: Has he EVER had sex? EVER? His: Does she know she's supposed to be obeying her husband?

This is also a thought-provoking book. Niesslein bravely delves into a topic that many people worry about but don't often discuss: mainly, what is happiness, do I have it, and if I don't have it, how do I get it? She pursues happiness, literally, by reading and gamely putting to the test various self-help books and methods, from Suze Orman on finances to Dr. Laura on marriage (not surprisingly, Niesslein's take on some of Dr. Laura's advice is hilarious). Along the way, the author goes from writing about the mundane (the disappointment of a master bedroom "littered with used dryer sheets") to the more philosophical (trying to arrange to have a "beautiful day" and concluding that such a day is "something I should keep behind glass, to be used in an emergency of bad mood.")

Finally, the book is a good conversation-starter. I think that many of us muddle through life asking ourselves the same questions that the author poses (What is happiness, do I have it, and if not, how do I get it), but that few of us ever really open up about it or are brave enough to take real action to get there. The last part of Niesslein's book suggests, to me, at least, that real happiness can come from focusing outward rather than inward. As the author notes, this doesn't necessarily involve being religious in the traditional sense or even helping others in common ways. In the author's case, it was "something extra I volunteered to do," something that made her, in her son's eyes, "noble."

The writing is impeccable; a perfect blend of readability, intensity and humor. Highly recommended!

Read it. Read it now.
By Silicon Valley Girl
I just finished reading this book and I loved it so much it's hard to be coherent, but I'll try:

Jennifer Niesslein spent two years honestly and unironically doing her best to follow self-help advice to improve herself and her life--but without abandoning her intelligence, skepticism, or common sense. She learned a lot and shares a lot of what she learned. The verdict, at least in part: Self-help programs can often help you, but they can't change you, and sometimes they can actually hurt you. Niesslein's writing is variously (and often simultaneously) hilariously funny, thoughtful, and moving. It's just a really, really good book. You should read it.

Terrible
By Tami Matson
Sorry, Jennifer. I'm a big fan of Brain, Child and really wanted to like your book, but the whiny tone and unimaginative look at self-help made reading this book feel like work. Most people seek out self-help books when they are really faced with a problem. By trying out programs just because you want to tweak a few things, you're not giving anyone (the authors of those books, yourself, or your readers) a fair gauge of these programs. And, it's very disappointing that the 2 areas that you really do need help - getting your son to sleep on his own and anxiety - get dismissed quickly. So, your son doesn't WANT to sleep on his own, even though you admit it interferes with your own sleep? You're worried about health insurance if you admit you have an anxiety disorder and may need medication? These are the true struggles of moms our age and you did nothing to address that.

Amazon.com Review
This Tom Clancy real-life military thriller is more nuanced than his novels, because its object is not simply to dramatize armed conflict but to relate the life lessons of his source, jet-pilot-turned-Desert-Storm-air-commander General Chuck Horner. Horner is no war cheerleader like General "Buck" Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove. He loathes the arrogance of the backwards, nuke-happy Strategic Air Command and the madly out-of-touch Vietnam War planner Robert McNamara. McNamara confesses his folly in two books, Argument Without End and In Retrospect, but Horner's you-are-there account more vividly demonstrates Vietnam's grim lessons. He flew an F-105 Thunderbird "Thud" fighter in the Wild Weasels, the unit with the highest medals-per-aircrew ratio, knew pilots who were stoned to death by villagers, and realized all the bombing did zero good. "All we really had to do was befriend Ho," says Horner sensibly. "Seems he wasn't part of a monolithic Communist plot, and hated the Chinese more than anything else." Horner is savvy about the screwups, the achievements, and the political maneuvering in and after the Gulf War, as leaders and branches of service battled for PR victories. His idea of a hero is Boomer McBroom's pilot Captain Gentner Drummond, who won a Flying Cross medal for refusing AWACS orders to down a jet that turned out to be a Saudi ally. Horner thinks the interservice and international cooperation in the Gulf War was way better than in Vietnam, but there's ample room for improvement. The action scenes aren't quite as brilliant as those in Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, but Clancy fans will find plenty to admire. Horner's improbable survival of a 150-m.p.h. near-crash in Libya in 1962 belongs in a Tom Clancy film. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
Clancy's second study in high command of the U.S. armed forces (after Into the Storm, written with Army general Fred Franks) focuses on Air Force general Chuck Horner, the fighter pilot who was overall air commander for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. This book is less about the Gulf War than about the making of a modern fighter general and the remaking of a modern air force. Horner was part of a new Air Force generation that rejected the Strategic Air Command model of "predictability, order and control" in favor of a holistic approach to air power and air command. A firm believer in central control of air assets, Horner also regarded traditional distinctions between "strategic" and "tactical" air as no longer relevant. What mattered was the appropriate situational use of air power in an integrated war plan. The main text demonstrates Horner's success in implementing his concepts over Iraq. Though the narrative offers no startling insights or revelations, the authors make the important contribution of presenting command friction as a natural consequence of interaction among senior officers with high intelligence and strong wills. The implication is clear: to succeed in an unpredictable international environment, America's armed forces will need tigers at their head. Tigers are dangerous. They challenge each other. They take issue with higher wisdom and higher authority. And, according to the authors, they can be replaced by safely neutered house cats only at the country's peril. 500,000 first printing; $500,000 ad/promo; BOMC main selection; author tour.

Engrossing Insider's Look at Air Power during the Gulf War
By Benjamin Thomas
I just finished this book, and, quite frankly, I feel like I have just been through a war. As a US Air Force officer who was just starting out during the time of the Gulf War, I had been looking forward to reading this book for a long time. I had already learned quite a bit about the Gulf War through other sources, but I was looking for a legitimate source of what was actually happening, on the ground and in the air, from a day-to-day perspective, and from somebody who had lived the experience.

This was the right book! The opening chapters introduce us to Gen Chuck Horner in an autobiographical approach. We learn what motivates him as a pilot, as an officer, and as a human being. We gain some insights from his experiences during Vietnam, and ultimately learn how that affected his approach to the Gulf War.

But the bulk of the book is about the Gulf War, and how the coalition forces made their decisions on the best way to approach the battle situation. My favorite partsin this book, were the "day-in-the-life" segments. We get to follow Gen Horner from the moment he wakes up, through briefings, visits to units, phone calls, problem solving, meetings with coalition partners, etc. to the minute he finally, gets to go to bed. We see and appreciate the job he does at the most mundane level, and yet understand how those small things lead to the big picture of war fighting. Gen Horner is generous in spreading the credit for successes and does not hold back in accepting blame when that is appropriate.

The only reason I didn't rate this book 5 stars is the lengthy explanations of air power and strategy. For those who are not familiar with such concepts, this information is vital, and so you should consider my rating to be 5 stars.

Finally, I appreciated Gen Horner's essay's on coalition building and the future of air and space power. I was fortunate enough to be assigned to Space Command for a short time before Gen Horner retired as CINCSPACE and from the US Air Force. And even though I was but a lowly Lieutenant, and never spoke directly with Gen Horner, I can tell you his impact on all of us was profound. As Tom Clancy states at the end of the book, "Gen Chuck Horner was the right man at the right time."

From Publishers Weekly
With their wildly popular Left Behind thrillers, LaHaye and Jenkins took the Christian fiction genre to new heights of mainstream success, but also sparked renewed debate among evangelicals concerning End Times theology. Now, they reunite to undertake the Jesus Chronicles, a four-book series of historical novels profiling the lives of the Gospel writers: John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke. This first installment recounts the personal and spiritual journey of the only one of the original apostles who died from old age rather than martyrdom. Robinson Dean brings an appropriately deep and sober tone to his duties as narrator, especially in his portrayal of the elderly John's exhaustive efforts to leave a written record of both his first-person experiences and prophetic visions. The authors steep their storytelling in a conservative interpretation of scripture that may not appeal evenly across the broader spectrums of Christian theology, but they provide some engaging human drama. The audiobook also includes Dean's reading of the complete texts of all five New Testament books for which John is credited (John's Gospel, his three Epistles and Revelation).

From AudioFile
Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins's new work is not meant to be an examination of the life of the longest-living disciple of Jesus Christ. The authors of the popular Left Behind series ask listeners to accept the work for what it is--a novel. Reader Robertson Dean is the best thing about the book. His measured voice and soft tones sound like the best of the narrators of the religious movies of the 1960s. His is a trustworthy voice, a fatherly voice, amazingly gentle yet harsh when necessary. Expect more and you might be disappointed. M.S. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
