From Publishers Weekly
At the start of bestseller Robb's megablast 28th novel to feature Lt. Eve Dallas (after Salvation in Death), Eve is dismayed to discover at a Manhattan crime scene that the victim is a friend, Det. Amaryllis Coltraine, who's been fatally zapped by her own stun gun. Dallas uncovers a connection to Coltraine's ex-boyfriend, Alex Ricker, whose father, a notorious criminal serving a life sentence at the Omega Penal Colony, blames Dallas and her husband, Roarke, for his imprisonment. Humorous touches, like the wild poolside wedding shower Dallas must abruptly leave after receiving word of a prime suspect found shot to death, provide relief from the intensity of the murder investigation. In a nice paranormal twist, Dallas uses dream visits with Coltraine to help expose a devious killer whose identity is a stunner. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) has a real gift for keeping this long-running thriller series fresh. (Feb.)

From Booklist
NYPD Lieutenant Eve Dallas always does her best to solve every one of her cases, but her latest assignment just might be her most difficult yet. Not only was the victim, Amarylis Coltraine, a cop who was killed with her own weapon, but the case also takes on an added personal dimension since Amarylis was Chief Medical Examiner Morris’ lover, and Morris is one of Eve’s best friends. When the killer sends Eve a package containing Coltraine’s badge, weapon, and a taunting note suggesting that she might be next on the list, Eve finds herself trying to untangle a case that may be linked to her own past. All of the familiar ingredients Robb’s millions of readers expect to fall neatly into place—a cleverly constructed plot, an intriguing cast of secondary characters, and a sexy romance between tough-as-nails Eve and her mysterious billionaire husband Roarke—do so in the 30th gritty, suspenseful addition to Robb’s best-selling, futuristic police-procedural series. --John Charles

One of the best so far
By Katzenjammer123
"Promises in Death", book 29 in the in death - series is one of the best so far. It's really intense, sad but also hilarious and just great.
The story begins with the murder of Detective Coltraine who was in a intimate relationship with Morris. Not only Eve but every other cop in New York is on the hunt for the killer who took the life of one of them. But especially Eve and her unit are doing everything to solve this case as fast as possible. When the victim is linked with Alex Ricker, son of Max Ricker, it seems clear that he has to the number one suspect in the murder. But Eve soon realizes that while Alex Ricker may be a criminal he is no murderer. On the contrary he is just another victim in a game of revenge and power. When a second person close to Alex Ricker is killed Eve discovers that the killer may be no Mr X but somebody she already knows and whom Detective Coltraine trusted.
"Promises in Death" is so far one of my favourites in the series. Some parts of the book are hard to read because they are so sad but they are still great because you see a new side of Eve. She is not only a brilliant cop but also manages to be a very good friend to Morris and I have to say that I love this side of her. Roarke and Eve rock as usual and I think that you can see that their relationship is getting better and better.
There are also two hilarious scenes in this book involving Eve. One is Eve and Roarke buying some underwear (I had to laugh out loud when reading this) and one is Eve and a bunch of naked, drunken woman who are no strangers to her. These two scenes show yet another side of Eve and make it clear that she appreciates her friendships and realizes that they are important to balance out what she goes through in her job.
You learn a lot about Morris in this book and thank god he is not leaving New York after this tragedy, so I hope to see more of him and maybe Alex Ricker in the future.
So all in all I think that "Promises in Death" is brilliant and a fantastic new addition to the series. Thanks J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts for this great book.

The choices we make and the chances we take, determine our destiny.
By Bibliophylax
This is one of the best In Death books so far, in my opinion. The horrible ways in which Eve and Roarke's relationship could have gone wrong is explored through a proxy couple. Eve's investigation brings up the different choices that were made at each step and how the sum of all of those choices led to the here and now (or since it is 2059, the there and then). The introspection that both E & R go through is presented so beautifully that at no point does it get boring - no contemplating the navel here.

The humor is intact in spite of the circumstance. That must have been difficult to manage without coming across as absolutely ridiculous. This is further proof of the author's talent - if anything further were needed. I loved it when Eve found it easier to 'describe a subject' than describe a friend. I especially liked the part where Eve flares up at Morris and immediately regrets it - not humorous at all, but very human and very relatable.

The staccato speech that I used to love (not so much in her last, say 5-10 books) is not in evidence here. THANK GOD FOR THAT! Seems as though she has been paying attention to the criticism from the readers.

A few questions I have for NR (1) Are you a big fan of L&O? I was surprised to see that one of the squad members was a transferee from SVU. I may be wrong, but the NYPD in 2009 has a Sex Crimes Unit, not an SVU.

(2) Why is it called Promises?

(3) I want Alex's story - truly a tortured hero.

All in all, a very good book for In Death fans.

The Accidental Bestseller, by Wendy Wax

From the USA Today bestselling author of While We Were Watching Downton Abbey...
Once upon a time four aspiring authors met at their very first writers' conference. Ten years later they're still friends, survivors of the ultra-competitive New York publishing world. Mallory St. James is a workaholic whose bestsellers support a lavish lifestyle. Tanya Mason is a single mother juggling two jobs, two kids, and too many deadlines. Faye Truett is the wife of a famous televangelist and the author of inspirational romances: no one would ever guess her explosive secret. Kendall Aims's once-promising career is on the skids-and so is her marriage. Her sales are dismal, her new editor detests her work-and her husband is cheating. Barely able to think, let alone meet her final deadline, Kendall holes up in a mountain cabin to confront a blank page and a blanker future. But her friends won't let her face this trial alone. Together they collaborate on a novel using their own lives as fodder, assuming no one will ever discover the truth behind their words.

No one is more surprised than they are when the book becomes a runaway bestseller. But with success comes scrutiny and scandal...as these four best friends suddenly realize how little they've truly known each other.

Fun Read, but Too Cliche
By Amazon Customer
For a fun beach read, this is a perfect choice. If you like a lot of substance, this may not be the best book for you. Although the characters are fun, they are also highly cliche, from the totally falling apart Kendall to the secretly naughty Faye (I don't know about others, but I guessed her secret from the moment it was revealed that she HAD a secret). None of the characters' motivations or secrets were surprising, and not much unpredictable happened throughout the book, down to the surprise confessions near the end. The book also dragged in the middle, with the first major plot point, the finishing of the novel, happening halfway through and killing both the suspense and the pacing. This would probably have worked out much better as two shorter novels, since the length makes it drag on and on. Ironically enough, the cover art of this book seems as misplaced and arbitrary of the cover art of the fictional novel. Still, I'm not sorry I picked it up, and it was a fun diversion. 3.5*

The Accidental Bestseller
By R. A. Taylor
I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked up The Accidental Bestseller, but whatever it was, I got so much more! This book is just fantastic. It's really a story about friendship among women, courage, living up to your true potential, and honesty. It's a page turner--I just couldn't wait to find out what happened to the four remarkable women in the book.

This is the story of Kendall who is a mid-list author with failing sales, Mallory who is a well known New York Times bestseller list author, Tanya who writes romance novels and Faye who is married to a televangelist and writes inspirational novels. They've been good friends for 10 years, having met at a writer's conference, hitting it off immediately. When Kendall's life starts falling apart--she finds out her publisher is dropping her as soon as she completes the last book in her contract, at the same time finding out her husband wants a divorce--she scurries off to her mountain retreat to hide out. Her three friends come to her rescue to help her get that book written.

The story of getting that book written and what happens when it's published is just incredible. I loved every page of this book and could hardly wait to find out what was going to happen next. There is great character development making each of the four authors very easy to visualize. These were women I wanted to know, wished that they lived next door to me. Wendy Wax has written a wonderful book about the strength of women's friendships and I hope she writes a sequel to this story. Ms. Wax writes with great insight into the publishing industry, not always a pretty picture. Each chapter begins with a quote from an author about the hard work involved in writing. Some of these quotes are laugh out loud funny, but all are interesting. One of my favorites: There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are. -W. Somerset Maugham.

While I was reading the book, I kept talking about how great it was so when I finished it, my husband asked to read it. He's never read women's fiction, so I handed it over with some trepidation. But he liked it too and also found it to be a page turner. Now we're both looking for more books by Wendy Wax.

FRIENDSHIP -- CAN IT SURVIVE?
By Laurel-Rain Snow
Four aspiring writers who met at a writers' conference maintain their friendship several years later. Their individual writing careers are varied, but problems of one kind or another plague each of them.

Mallory St. James has "bestseller" status, but she has hit a glitch. Writer's block. Kendall Aims has failed to win an award that would have made a difference, and her publisher is dumping her. And so is her husband. But she has to write one more book, in the midst of the chaos of her life. Tanya Mason, single mother, juggles two jobs, two kids, and a difficult mother. Faye Truett is the wife of a famous televangelist and writes inspirational romances, but beneath this pristine exterior is an explosive secret.

Imagine the furor that arises when the four collaborate on Kendall's final novel for her publisher, and then the secret of this effort ( and so much more!) is unveiled in a most unfortunate way. And the fallout extends throughout all of their lives.

One of the most captivating aspects of this novel is the author's ability to rein the reader into the lives of the characters, detailing every moment and unfolding snippets of backstory and motivation at just the right junctures. When we are totally invested in events, she drops each bomb for maximum impact. Reading late at night and waking up early each morning, I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

Winding down to a very satisfying conclusion, I was poised for more. There has to be a sequel!

For The Accidental Bestseller, I vote five stars--definitely!

What sounded like an idyllic winter getaway at relatives' Oaxacan dude ranch turns into a bonesman's holiday for Gideon Oliver and his wife, Julie, in Edgar-winner Elkins's atmospheric 16th mystery to feature the forensic anthropologist (after 2008's Uneasy Relations). Before the Washington State couple can even sample the quesadillas at the Hacienda Encantada, their hostess, Julie's cousin, asks Gideon if he'd mind helping the local police chief by examining the mummified remains of what appears to be a murder victim. One skeleton swiftly leads to a second—and from there smack into a suspenseful puzzle whose secret someone will apparently kill to protect. Elkins partially tips his hand before hitting the home stretch of his rapidly accelerating plot, but, even so, the final revelations should leave you—if not the unflappable Bone Detective—pleasantly surprised. Best mystery I've read this year
By Jonathan A. Turner
For an aficionado of the traditional mystery, a four-star Aaron Elkins is a five-star work from almost anyone else.

Part of the mystery in _Skull Duggery_ is figuring out what the mystery will be. Elkins structures the novel around a neat little reversal. It's clear right from Chapter 1 that a murder has been committed--but not *what* murder! The body of the story is almost archaeological in its effect, concerning as it does the reconstruction of past events rather than the consequences of a crime in the present. It's beautifully paced--new twists appear roughly every other chapter--and it's also endlessly fascinating for anyone with an interest in forensics.

If there's a weakness in this process, it's one that will mainly afflict analytically-minded mystery mavens. If you're the right (or possibly wrong) sort of reader, you may figure out the truth well in advance based, not on the text, but on meta-knowledge of how these stories work. I hasten to add that there are also a good many clues planted fair and square in the narrative itself.

Aside from that, the usual Elkins charms are all on display: a vivid setting, a likable protagonist, well-drawn secondary characters, scientific tidbits galore, and a well-thought-out denouement. I reiterate, as I always do, that Elkins is the best writer of classical mysteries working today. If you revel in smarts rather than violence, if you want to be surprised and enlightened rather than merely shocked, you'll like _Skull Duggery_.

Mystery and murder in Oaxaca--very satisfying
By Saralee Etter
Julie and Gideon Oliver visit Oaxaca, Mexico for a little working vacation--for Julie, that is. She agreed to help run her cousin's resort/ranch, Hacienda Encantada, for a few days while members of the cousin's family are otherwise occupied. Gideon is at loose ends until some mummified remains turn up and the local chief of police asks for his help. So Gideon investigates the mummy, and by pulling on that one forensic string he starts unraveling an entire fabric of lies, deceptions and murder.

When I read a mystery novel, I love to feel like I'm really visiting the world of the story, and I love to learn new things. This story did both for me.

The setting was delightful, full of great little details that (for me) brought back fond memories of my years in Mexico. For example, the colorful bustle in the marketplaces, the crumbling grandeur of certain official government buildings, and the scent and flavor of wonderful Mexican food--perfect.

And I enjoyed sharing Gideon's investigations. I always learn something new and fascinating about the human body--just enough detail to allow me to understand the logic involved, not so much that I get confused. It's a tricky balance, I'll bet, but the end result allows me to feel the same sense of discovery that Gideon feels.

The solution to the mystery felt very satisfying, too. For me it was unexpected, but very logical.

Altogether a terrific book.

One of the best Gideon Oliver mysteries
By Mike Garrison
[This is the latest in a long line of mystery novels by Elkins featuring Gideon Oliver. You can read this one on its own as far as the plot is concerned, but the characterization really does presume you know who Gideon and Julie are.]

Gideon is back, and as good as ever. In fact, this is possibly the best Gideon Oliver book in a decade or more. Fans of John Lau will miss his absence, but Gideon and his wife Julie share center stage in a satisfying way.

As with all the best books in this series, Gideon happens to get drawn into investigating several skeletons. As usual, it turns out that they have been both murdered and misidentified. One of them has been murdered in an unusual way. The other has been murdered in a quite normal way, but has some very unusual bone characteristics. And it is up to Gideon to solve both puzzles. Which he does, in fine form.

Gideon and Julie are staying in Mexico, at a guest ranch owned by her relatives. His involvement in a murder investigation leads him to team up with Javier Marmolejo, the detective who featured in an earlier (1989) Gideon novel, "Curses". But it is Gideon who solves the mystery (with help, of course, from Julie).

The plot is nifty, because it isn't too hard to guess who the skeletons will turn out to be, but that still doesn't explain why they were killed. And yet, Elkins provides us with enough clues to make it quite believable when Gideon resolves the whole situation.

Any fan of Elkins, and especially of the early Gideon Oliver books, will enjoy this one. Probably so will any fan of mystery novels.

worth the $
By cloe
this was one of the better books ive read lately. unlike some of the other erotic novels this one actually had a rather intresting story line. i would recomend that you purchase the 2nd book 'the mark of the vampire queen' as well. both books are rather long and well writen. this was one book i actually didnt find myself fliping through and skiping segments to try and keep my attention. i only wish there were more.

Solid 4 Stars
By Sunny Days
This one was very cerebral. There was alot of sex in it (hot, I might add), but the focus was definitely on the character's thoughts, politics, feelings, conflict. I did like it, btu at first wasn't sure I wanted to read another 400 pages of the turmoil. Also, at first the SM in the book was borderline too much for me. But once I got emotionally involved & the dynamics changed, I was fine. Joey Hill definitely pushes the comfort level, but does it so beautifully that without it the story would not have been the same.
In any event, I did buy Mark of the Vampire Queen, which was EVEN better than this one, though without this one first, I would have been lost. I do recommend this series.

Absolutely SMOKIN'!
By Stacy
I read the reviews of this book and debated ordering it....even put it off for months because, while I love almost all vampire novels, I wasn't particularly drawn to a story about a dominant female vampire (I usually like stories the other way around where the males are dominant).

Curiosity got the better of me and I thought "Eh, what the heck!" and I ordered it.

I am SOOOO glad I did. Not only is this book well written (and with plenty of erotic, "get-you-all-hot-and-bothered" scenes) but much to my delight, it's a true love story too! It's a very touching story of a man who finally finds himself and a vampire queen who is incredibly tough yet has weaknesses just like humans do.

It's truly excellent!

Real stories of crime will stir your emotions
By Ron Lisy
As a fan of the Law & Order series, I was intrigued by the title. The book actually does not have much to do with the television series franchise, but the true stories inside are presented in a way that any fan of the television series will enjoy.

Included are twenty-five true stories on which episodes of Law & Order are apparently based. These include the Liverpool murder of two-year old James Bulger by two 10-year old boys, the story of Jack Abbott, the protege of pulitzer-prize winning writer Norman Mailer, who stabbed aspiring actor Richard Adan to death over the use of a diner restroom; and the murder of Gulf War vet Anthony Riggs, killed by his wife and brother-in-law over life insurance proceeds.

Reading this book is like watching 25 short episodes of law and order, except that these ARE the true stories, with the real names.

Great Book, Especially for True Crime Buffs
By Jennifer Wardrip
Although the book has little to do with the actual LAW & ORDER shows, it does a great job of going "behind the scenes," as it were, of 25 of the show's episodes to explore the true crimes they were based on.

These aren't stories for the faint of heart, but they do pull at the heartstrings. I remember watching many of the episodes the crimes were based on. This is a great book, especially for those interested in true crimes, but anyone will find them fascinating.

The authors have truly done their research and are to be commended.

Interesting Read
By Betty Boop
Some of these stories I recognized from the media. Other stories were new to me. I liked how they compared the true crime stories to the show.

A good read for the true crime reader.

Mistress of the Art of Death, by Ariana Franklin

The national bestselling hit hailed by the New York Times as a "vibrant medieval mystery...[it] outdoes the competition."

In medieval Cambridge, England, Adelia, a female forensics expert, is summoned by King Henry II to investigate a series of gruesome murders that has wrongly implicated the Jewish population, yielding even more tragic results. As Adelia's investigation takes her behind the closed doors of the country's churches, the killer prepares to strike again.

From Publishers Weekly
Had Ellis Peters's Brother Cadfael been born a few decades later, he might have found a worthy associate and friend in Dr. Vesuvia Adelia Rachel Ortese Aguilar of Salerno, a short and short-tempered medieval coroner hired in secret by King Henry II to find out who's behind the horrific murders of Christian children in Cambridge, England. Prominent local Jews stand accused; Henry wants them freed, mostly for the sake of their tax revenue. As Adelia examines the children's bodies and gets to know the people of Cambridge, she has no trouble assembling a long list of suspects, but she encounters considerable difficulty trying to narrow it down, a struggle in which the reader gladly joins her. Not all of the plot twists are surprising and the romantic subplot is an unnecessary afterthought, but Franklin (City of Shadows) has developed a skillful blend of historical fact and gruesome fiction that's more than sufficient to keep readers interested and entertained. From Bookmarks Magazine
In this historical crime thriller, Ariana Franklin (the nom de plume for British writer Diana Norman) introduces the compelling Adelia—abandoned as a child, adopted by doctors, trained in Salerno (a center of learning), and now a woman of modern sensibilities. Critics agree that Mistress is an unusually smart and intriguing story. Franklin perfectly recreates the barbarous culture of the Middle Ages and the Crusades—an era of religious persecution and idealism that clashed with the burgeoning importance of science and the rule of law. Grisly forensic details, combined with whodunit suspense, fascinating characters, timely themes, and even a little romance make for an excellent read. Watch out for Adelia's return in next year's The Serpent's Tale.

From Booklist
In the twelfth century, the Salerno School of Medicine (in the Norman Kingdom of Sicily) boasted female students among its ranks. When Adelia, one of the university's prodigies, is summoned to considerably less-progressive Cambridge, England, to provide forensic support in the investigation of the murder of four children, she must conceal her identity lest she be labeled a witch. Still, her predicament is far less perilous than that of the Jewish residents of Cambridge, whom the Catholic townspeople have blamed for the quartet of deaths. King Henry II, while ruthless, is no fool; mindful of the tax revenues derived from Jewish merchants, he's vowed his protection until they can be exonerated. Adelia, whose entourage includes a Jewish investigator and a Muslim bodyguard, carefully analyzes the corpses. Her conclusions, alas, are far from definitive: the crimes could be the work of a serial killer, or perhaps one among the latest group of pilgrims who've recently returned from Canterbury. Though her narrative is somewhat uneven, Franklin (City of Shadows, 2006) delivers rich period detail and a bloody good ending reflecting the savagery of the times. Allison Block

In 12th Century Cambridge, children are dissapearing and turning up dead...with horribly mutilated bodies. Immediately the zealous Christians suspect the jews and a they attack the local jewery. For their own safety the Jews are kept in the castle away from danger. But they can't work and no income for them means no income for the King. So King Henry sends for the medieval equivalent of today's coroner from a top medical school in Salerno italy, a Master of the Art of Death.

Instead, he gets Adelia, a Mistress of the Art of Death, who is accompanied by Simon, the Jewish investigatory, and Mansur, a large Muslim eunuch who is Adelia's bodyguard. In the hysterical and superstitious climate of Cambridge, and in order to avoid a charge of witchcraft, Mansur poses as the doctor and Adelia his assisant. All three begin the difficult task of examining the childrens bodies, gathering the clues, and searching for the killer.

This book is sort of a cross between CSI and Silence of the lambs. The actual mystery is interesting and kept my attention but I kept getting pulled out of the book by dialogue or some historical fact that just didn't seem right. The characters, esp. Adelia, all have very modern attitudes and just weren't believable. Additionally the story went on way too long after the killer is revealed.

I liked the author's writing style though and it was infused with a lot of dry humor which I enjoyed. So ultimately although I did have issues with certain aspects of the book, they weren't so bad that I regret reading it. If you can over look the modern attitudes and anachronisms and just read it for the story itself I think you'll really like it.

Read ONLY if You Don't Need to Go to Work the Next Day
By J. Avellanet
This is a wicked book - in no time at all you'll find yourself looking up to see the clock at 3:00am. And, as I later realized, that won't even get you half way through the book when the really fast-paced action and suspense grows.

The writing is well done and perfect after a long day...though admittedly, the use of some of the more modern english ("ain't", etc.) throws one off first, it does serve to help flesh out characters who are educated versus those who aren't.

And yes, if you are a fan of CSI, you'll love this book. If you like mysteries, you'll enjoy it. And if you crave a good historical fiction, this is just the thing. And, if you're like me, and have all three of those characteristics together, then don't waste time reading any more reviews -- get this book.

Note to the author, Ms. Franklin: I do so hope we get a sequel. Very much enjoyed the protagonist and the world in which she lives.

Interesting series..

I really enjoyed this series. The story is interesting. The time is interesting. The characters are intense and colorful. This is one of those mysteries that gives you all the clues, but doesn't make it easy. I've read all the books in the series and enjoyed them all equally.

I've read several of the negative reviews for this book and found them somewhat disturbing. Lots of complaints about the description of child murders. If you are of a sensitive nature why would you read a book about child murders in the first place? The murders are not, in any way, glorified. The protaganist is as horrified as the reader, which is as it should be. And lots of complaints about the violence - well, there is violence, of course. This was an incredibly violent period in history. The Crusades were bloody and brutal. Individual life was not accorded the value we give it today - quite the opposite. The Crusaders themselves were a plague of death where ever they went. Christians were far less compassionate than the Muslims they attempted to destroy, mass murder was the norm of the day. Read!

Also, complaints about the fact that Adelia seems to be more advanced than she should be. People/Readers...Adelia is not English! At this period in history the Muslim world was much more advanced than Europe, especially medically - broaden your knowledge of world history! Also, questions about Adelia's ideas of sanitary conditions - Adelia was raised by Jews! Jewish laws regarding cleanliness were far beyond those of the Europeans - it's part of the reason so many escaped the Black Death bringing upon themselves the ire of those around them. Adelia is a combination of the best ideas of her time. This is also the time of Eleanor of Aquitaine! The incredibly rich & royal woman who married the King of France, went on Crusade, left the King of France to marry the King of England, the over the top Henry II, bore him several sons and then rebelled against him with her own forces! If there was any time in history when women may have been considering thier roles and places - this would have been it. How could they not with such a role model?

On the whole, part of what I loved so much about this series is that it introduces ideas other than the standard European ones we are normally taught growing up. I found the Jewish and Muslim ideas in this book very interesting and more historically accurate than what I normally find in a book about this time. It may not be perfect, but it was interesting, fun, intense, and full of wonderful characters....and a little romance too. So, if your not prudish and squeemish - jump in and enjoy!
