Aurora Teagarden ~ Woman of Leisure...

When Aurora "Roe" Teagarden attends Jane Engle's funeral, it is more of a kindly gesture to someone who used to belong to the Real Murders club with her before the club stopped meeting. Roe considered Jane a friend, but didn't really know her that well. So she is startled when Jane's lawyer informs her that she is the heir to Jane's estate. Suddenly, Roe goes from scraping by on a part-time librarian's salary to an heiress with a home, nice jewelry and $550,000 in savings. Roe isn't quite sure what to do with herself and her newfound wealth. However, she realizes that all is not as rosy as it seems when Jane's lawyer keeps hinting that there may be some problem that she needs to solve for Jane. When Roe goes to check out Jane's house, it has been broken into and searched, but nothing was stolen. Roe is determined to figure out the secret and eventually discovers Jane's hiding place and pulls out - a human skull. As Roe waffles between handing the skull over to the police or tossing it in the river, her life takes a few unexpected turns. Her ex-boyfriend, a police officer, moves in across the street with his new, very pregnant wife; she starts dating a minister; her mother gets married; her best friends gets engaged; her new neighbors are throwing welcoming parties for her; she inherits a cat who soon has kittens; everyone in town is gossiping about her relationship with Jane and her inheritance - the list goes on and on. Needless to say, Roe doesn't spend a whole lot of time investigating who the owner of the skull was until the rest of the skeleton is discovered at the end of the street...
This is the second installment in the Aurora Teagarden mystery series (Real Murders is #1) and it is a pleasant, fast read. I read it in a couple of hours and enjoyed it, but it isn't anything that is very memorable. The mystery is rather lacking because we don't know who the skull belongs to, but Roe doesn't really go out and try to figure out who it belongs to - the answer just kind of falls in her lap at the end of the story. Charlaine Harris does introduce some interesting new characters, however, and she keeps up with a few of the old ones from Real Murders so it was nice to see time passing in the small town. I would have liked to see a bit more of a plot regarding the mystery side of this "mystery", but this book is more of a fiction novel with a little bit of a mystery on the side. Still an enjoyable read, but I must say that the Lily Bard series (Shakespeare's Landlord, Shakespeare's Champion, etc.) is far superior than the Aurora Teagarden series.

Not a Favorite Aurora Teagarden Mystery

I have been looking forward to reading "A Bone to Pick" to read how Aurora Teagarden comes into her inheritance. The story opens with Aurora Teagarden attending weddings for both her mother and Arthur Smith and the funeral of Jane Engle. Aurora then inherits Jane's house and finds a sinister surprise inside.
Aurora, as always, has lots of character detail and internal dialogue (love her hair : >), but
I was disappointed to find little charactization for benefactress and Real Murders ex-cohort Jane Engle. There was also little sleuthing in this story. Aurora gets to know her new neighbors through a couple of social events, but does not beat the street to try to solve the mystery. This installment shares the great atmosphere and the small-town setting with the rest of the series, but I didn't buy the mechanics of the story. Neither did I appreciate that Jane Engle just "didn't have time" to put things back the way she found them.
"A Bone to Pick" is effective in that it made me want to read the rest of the series, but mostly to fill in the blanks this story leaves and see if Harris' characterizations develop further.

"A Bone To Pick" by Charlaine Harris is the second book in her series about librarian Aurora Teagarden. (The first being Real Murders: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 1) In this mystery, Aurora aka Roe is stunned when she inherits a house and a large sum of money from elderly Jane Engle after her death. That's not the only thing Jane left her- there's a human skull in the window seat. On top of that, the people that have just moved in across the street from Jane's house are none other than Roe's ex-boyfriend Arthur Smith and his new pregnant wife.

After some snooping around, Roe finds out that a couple of people in the neighborhood have gone missing. One went out for diapers and never came home; another skipped out on his rent and left during the night. Was one of them killed? Is it their skull? Roe is determined to find out!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I fully recommend the rest in this series. Next is Three Bedrooms, One Corpse: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, followed by The Julius House: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 4, Dead Over Heels: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 5, "Fool And His Honey: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 6, Last Scene Alive (Aurora Teagarden Mysteries), and Poppy Done To Death: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 8.

This uninspired addition to the Aurora Teagarden series (The Julius House, etc.) opens memorably with Lawrenceton, Ga.'s premiere librarian adjusting her lawn chair and observing Angel Youngblood, her bodyguard and all-around helper, cut the grass. From a plane that has been circling overhead drops the recently dead body of Detective Sergeant Jack Burns, Aurora's local law-enforcement nemesis. Aurora, or Roe as her friends call her, sets out to find out who killed him and why her garden was targeted for the corpse. As she conducts her unorthodox search, she has the nagging thought that perhaps the death has something to do with Angel or her husband, Shelby, or perhaps with her own husband, Martin, and his mysterious and dangerous past. She is not reassured when the FBI is called in, nor when several other murders are committed. In between visiting crime scenes and attending company banquets (the one-dimensional Martin is a bigshot exec), Roe also deals with the post-honeymoon letdown of her two-year-old marriage and ponders the strangely intimate relationship she has developed with her bodyguards. True Teagarden enthusiasts may feel rewarded by this latest episode, but Harris is a bit too down to earth this time out--the suspense barely cranks up before the solution descends with a thud not unlike that of Jack Burns's corpse.

Aurora "Roe" Teagarden had just finished wrestling her lounge chair into a comfortable position when the body of her old nemesis, Detective Jack Burns, landed with a thud in her front yard. Everyone in town knew that Jack and Roe did not get along, but its not like Roe could be in two places at once so the police start looking for other suspects. But then Roe has an argument with her assistant at the library and she turns up brutally beaten the next day and her open purse is found on the hood of her bodyguard's car. An admirer sends her flowers with no name attached, her cat is suddenly sporting a new ribbon around his collar, her ex-lover is stabbed, and that is just the beginning. Roe has been found in the middle of murder and mayhem before, but this time, it's personal...
I enjoyed this book, just as I have enjoyed all of the Aurora Teagarden series, but this one was not as good as the previous books. Roe solved the crimes a little too easily and there was a little too much going on for no one else to spot that the connection between all of the goings-on was Roe herself. I know it is a small police force, but come on. Anyway, Charlaine Harris' writing style is still very engaging and clear. I always enjoy her characters and there were some new people to meet in this book that were fun to get to know because they were a little different. I just wish that the plot had been a little bit better developed and solved. I felt that the author was rushing to finish this one and just decided to end it one day, wrote the last couple of pages and called it done. Still, if you have enjoyed her other books, you will enjoy this one and, if you are like me, you like to read a series all the way through, so find a cheap copy.

enjoyable fluff for Teagarden fans

This is the 5th in a series of mysteries about Aurora Teagarden, a librarian who has come into some money and lives among her family and friends (and a few enemies) in Lawrenceton, GA. This time out she is minding her own business when a body is dropped from a small plane and onto her newly mown lawn; it turns out to be a policeman who feuded with Roeon numerous occasions. After other killings continue to point to Roe or her household, she decides to get serious and figure out who the real killer is, of course!

Aurora and her circle of acquaintances are interesting characters, but this 5th in the series was neither believable nor particularly amusing. Many people are killed and the ending wraps up very quickly and without full motivation for some of the occurences. A good series, but a subpar outing.

E.J. Copperman is a Keeper!

First cozy mysteries by unknown authors are usually bad. I had just finished a moderately bad first cozy (by a totally different author, obviously) and was debating whether it was worth a trip to the library to avoid a second. Boy, am I glad I gave this book a chance, instead.

The premise isn't reassuring... divorcee with young child moves back home to Start Over, acquiring an old fixer-upper mansion that turns out to have two resident ghosts. It's kinda been done.

However, this author is just a treat. The prose is solid and laugh-out-loud funny. The story advances nicely and you don't even hardly mind the nosiness that is required of every amateur sleuth because it's well-written and downright entertaining. The author also manages to do something with which many uber-successful authors struggle, and that is to create some tension, some dissent among characters (the stuff that gives characters character) without making them seem like absolutely unlikeable people. Or ghosts, for that matter. The reader is able to develop empathy for everyone in the story, which I think is just magic.

This is a beautiful first mystery and I look forward to many more!

Ooooh.... checking the author's website, I see that "E.J. Copperman is the pseudonym of a well-known mystery novelist, now embarking on a new type of story that includes some elements of the supernatural as well as a fair number of laughs. And the Copperman novels will have a different attitude, a different setting and completely different characters than anything that has come before, so E.J. really is a new author." Well, that explains a lot as this doesn't read like a first novel! Turns out our author is Jeff Cohen, whose books I haven't read but maybe will give a try on the strength of this one. And I have to say that Mr. Cohen totally convinced me he was a woman author, writing so convincingly about this female protagonist!

Witty, charming and magical

After her divorce from Steven AKA as the Swine, Alison Kirby wants to start over with her nine years old daughter Melissa. She buys a seven bedroom four bath fixer upper beach house and does her own repairs. Her plan is to open up a guest house; sans breakfast. Her project is coming along nicely until a bucket of compound falls on her head; knocking Alison out cold. When she awakens she sees the ghost of Maxie Moline and her bodyguard private detective Paul Harrison.

They both died in the house with the official verdict being a double suicide. Paul insists they never took the sleeping pills that caused their deaths; instead he claims to Alison someone poisoned them. They plead with Alison to look into their contention, but she says no until Maxie's antics drive her crazy so feeling like a victim of emotional erosion she agrees. Alison soon receives threatening emails and phone calls in which she is told they want "it" as she investigates what happened to the ghosts and links that to the threats to her. She finds a suspect, but to prove her belief requires her to employ extraordinary measures as deadlines leave her in a cemetery on Halloween night.

Witty, charming and magical describe the entertaining first Haunted Guest House mystery. The spirits interact with Alison, her daughter and mother as if they are alive; especially moxie Maxie with her antics to blackmail the heroine into investigating her demise. In between home repairs, a very frightened Alison tries to determine who is terrifying her and if the threat is tied to the deaths of her ghostly houseguests. Her trepidation and her relationship with her daughter make for an enjoyable paranormal amateur sleuth tale.

Ghostly doings on the Jersey Shore

Just in time for vacation reading, "Night of the Living Deed" provides a fun escape to the Jersey Shore, where recently divorced mom Alison Kerby is rehabbing an old house she plans to open as an inn -- if the resident ghosts, Maxie & Paul, will let her. Mischievous Maxie has a way of interfering with Alison's renovations, while Paul, who was a private eye, wants the home's new owner to help him solve a mystery: who killed him & Maxie? Not surprisingly, Alison is pretty freaked out by the prospect of owning a haunted house, especially one where the ghosts won't leave her alone to get on with her repairs. "Night" will, of course, appeal to fans of paranormal tales, but thanks to its likable, down-to-earth heroine, E.J. Copperman's new series is well worth a try for anyone in the mood for a witty, well-crafted mystery.

An Enjoyable Read!

I admit it. I find French women fascinating. What's funny is that I don't even know any. Oh, but I've heard about them, and read about them, and tried desperately to try and learn to tie a scarf with panache. So when I stumbled upon, What French Women Know: About Love, Sex, and Other Matters of the Heart and Mind by Debra Ollivier, I didn't even think twice before adding it to my cart.

I've read lot's of books about French women, from what they wear to what they eat. This book was different. It delved more into why they are what they are. More than that, it helped me see why, as an American, I am what I am.

Like most other American girls, I grew up wanting to be like everyone else. Wanting to fit in, wanting to be liked. French women don't want to be like everyone else, they want to stand out, they want to add their individual touches. And as far as being liked....they don't care. They don't feel the need to be nice, to go around smiling at everyone.

Another interesting area was in child rearing. They are much more inclined to try and raise independent children. The author talks of the day care that her two year old attended. The daycare was taking the two year olds off on a two day field trip! The French parents all let their children go and enjoyed a lovely two days relaxing with their husbands, while none of the American women would let their children go.

All in all, I enjoyed this book. Do I think that French women are better than me? No. Do I think I am better than French women? No. Do I think that perhaps we could learn from each other? Yes?

It is Attitude Mon Cherie!

It is always interesting to read how different cultures perceive life. According to author Ollivier, French women celebrate individual beauty, know how to handle the differences between men and women, embrace their own rules, don't mind a lack of perfection and enhance their femininity.

Ollivier shares how French women use these skills to their advantage. Clearly in many ways many French women have learned to live a life of enjoyment and acceptance instead of striving for a non attainable perfection and focusing on the negative.

In her book Ollivier points out the ways a French woman might perceive something vs. how an American woman might. This is not to say a French woman's way is better, it is just different.

For example, if a daughter bought her boyfriend home for the first time an American might give him the third degree immediately while the French would be loathe to ask personal questions. Which way is right depends on your thinking.

But what is so interesting is how it boils down to our approach to things and attitude. If you are unhappy with how things are for you now or want a little attitude change checking out the book may give you fresh ideas on how to approach things. Then again if all is working for you, no need for a book to learn about "What French Women Know" unless you want to know what they know just so you know :)

How French Women Seem When You're from LA

First off, be aware that the author is from Southern California and was apparently raised with so little culinary knowledge that she was impressed to find that a pie crust can be made from graham crackers and butter and that a man does not have to have gone to culinary school in order to know how to devein a duck liver. She was also raised in an atmosphere in which girls are raised to live in order to spend most of their social time in the company of other women, frantically trying to gain the approval of other women. No wonder France bowled her over.

If you are a woman who actually prefers the company of men, women who like men and flirting with men, and women who are nevertheless perfectly happy not being men, then you already know nearly half of what it took for French women to impress the author. The other half is fun to read, but be warned that the author commits the common Southern Californian sin of throwing her whole allegiance unquestioningly behind her current fad in intellectual thinking.

In other words, this is not a deeply thought-out work of comparing and contrasting French and American attitudes. It is a book about why the French amazed and charmed a Californian enough that she has become a French citizen. Even if you're not ready to drink the Kool-Aid--or should it be Orangina?--you might enjoy the safari.

Be warned: the audiobook is read by the author, not a professional voice actor. Be prepared to enjoy/suffer accordingly.

I waited for Britta and Pretty Boy's story for almost a year. I loved it, I laughed so hard everytime Britta was around Pretty Boy, calling him differents names, and asking him for more Os. Also Petty Boy's son, Sammy was something else, hilarious every single time. What can I tell you, I love this series (viking-navy SEALS). I had read every single one of them and I can't hardly wait for the next one. AWESOME BOOK

Lora Leigh is one of my favorite romantica authors. However, I was NOT pleased with this book. When first reading the excerpt on Leigh's Web site, I was really impatient to get my hands on NAUTI BOY! It looked like another naughty (pun intended) and forbidden love story with promising passion and loads of sex scenes!! Unfortunately, it didn't live up to its name!! So disappointing. I've read more of my share of Leigh's books, including the 1st two books in the Men of August series. Yet this one really does not compare to the August brothers. Sex scenes are pretty tame and lame. Of course, they're graphic, but not original--or titillating!!! There's no provocative dialogue either. Just the usual F and C words, but nothing that really turned me on. Shame! I know this book could have been so much HOTTER! The main characters are not very interesting and the storyline less than engaging. As one who is very familiar with her work, I've come to expect more from Leigh. Although I have 4 more chapters to read, I'm not even inclined to finish it, having no interests whatsoever in what happens between Rowdy and Kelly (or finding out who the "mysterious" stalker is).

Not Like Her Previous Titles!

Kelly Benton has loved Rowdy McKay since she was a little girl. She has saved herself for the handsome Marine and plans on living a happily ever after. But, fate steps in and she is brutally attacked, leaving her shaken and scared...even of the man that holds her heart. Will Kelly ever be able to accept Rowdy's touch or reach for the safety of his arms?

Rowdy comes home to finally claim Kelly. She's all grown up and he's tired of waiting but his homecoming is not what he expects and his girl has been keeping a secret from him. What's worse. The nightmare isn't over yet, she's still be stalked by the animal that dared to hurt her. With the help of his two cousins Natches and Dawg he plans on getting the bad guy and the girl.

Ms. Leigh has once again created a good read. What kept it from being great was the fact she didn't build the suspense as to who had hurt Kelly. The end did not stop with an "Ah ha!" moment. The intimate scenes are not what loyal readers will be used to so be forewarned if you're looking for heat. This is story about two people with a past and I highly enjoy these kinds of romances. I look forward to reading the next in the McKay cousin series.

Truly Fantabulous!!!!

I have to say ....LOVED IT SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!! There was so much there between all of the characters that I just fell in love with Hutch, Cam, Sawyer and Regina. I was alittle angry at Reggie for not committing to her men but that is where the story really gets involved and deep.....As I read deeper into the story, Reggie became a heroine that I loved to read about. She is what makes me jump up and say "YEA" today.

I do not want to give any spoilers out -And trust me, its super hard because I want to tell all about this awesome book from beginning to end but it's best you buy the book and let this great family of four envelope your heart as they did mine!!!!! I'm trying to sit here and think of how I can tell y'all how great Maya is for writing this awesome , complex , romantic, erotic, sexy , to die for story. The sex wasnt just put there to fill pages, it was put there as part of the background and current part of the story and I loved it. I reread this story over and over and over.

And the fact that Reggie was being stalked played a huge part in bringing her back to her men...and the plot twist in the end was terrific...just buy it and enjoy this story!!!!!

Good not great

I will have to say that this book was a good read, but not up to the level of her other books. I really was in hopes of it being better than it turned out to be, but I wouldn't steer anyone away from purchasing it and I will most certainly continue supporting this author.

What I didn't care for - The story dragged for several chapters and in different places, which is unlike previous books by this author.

Also, the sexy stuff came so far into the novel after a great promise of what was to come.

For a good way into the book the guys didn't seem too intent on the sharing and each would have prefered if she could have chosen them. Later, they were resolved that this was the only way to be with her because she would never choose, but you are left thinking that this is going to be a problem down the road, or at least I was left thinking that.

What I liked - How fiesty the heroine was, she wasn't some weak willed girl who couldn't handle herself and that was established right from the beginning.

I also liked that the author didn't make her some virginal girl with limited experience with men. I just can't stand reading books like these that feature previously inexperienced women who immediately is comfortable with multiple partners, that always yanks me out of the fantasy a bit.

Once they got going with the sexy stuff closer to the end, it was really, really, really hot - The author really delivered in the end with the erotic stuff if that's what one likes to read.

Excellent read

What I loved about this story was the heroine was a strong woman. Not needy or whimpering or submissive. She had a strong sense of self. She participated in the love scenes.

The other aspect of this story is, unlike other erotica that basically pure fantasy, as a reader you could actually see this situtation really happening.

I highly recommend Be With Me.
