A Gem of a Book in a Jewel of a Series!

French Polished Murder (A Daring Finds Mystery)
Funny, fast paced and delightful! Dyce Daring is a character I can't read enough about. I literally burst out in laughter reading this book. (Note: people *will* look at you if you're giggling and break out in a belly laugh in a doctor's waiting room) I had the great good luck to be reading this a week after having the same thing happen, in the same office, while reading the first book in the series, "Dipped, Stripped and Dead." Now I have a reputation, too :-) If anything, "French Polished Murder" is even funnier *and* more of a nail biter. The interactions among Dyce, her toddler son, her boy friend and her (male) bff from high school are fun an touching and true to life -- for at least some definitions of 'true.' I wish I could find Goldport, Colorado, because it sure sounds like a town I'd love to visit. I *want* to browse Dyce's parents' bookstore, and have her father talk me *out* of buying one of his books. I'd volunteer to do a 'ride along' with these policemen any day or night of the week! The main problem I have with "French Polished Murder" is that I want the *next* book in the series, *now*! However, I most certainly have the gifts picked out for mother's day, my sisters'-in-law birthdays, and my bff, just for being my bff. Thank you, Elise Hyatt, for two (so far!) of the most pleasurable reading experiences I've had in years!

Is Book 3 ready yet?

I just finished "French Polish Murder" and I'm ready for the 3rd book in this series. These stories are just that good. While I didn't LOL with this one like I did the first in the series, I still found the book pretty amusing. The thing I like about the main character, Dyce, is that she is 'real.' She's a struggling single mom who is just a bit mouthy, has a toddler son that is cute but not too sacharine. You get the idea. And I adore her bff, Ben.

*** SPOILER *** My only complaint with this book was all the time spent on the rats. While I can appreciate that Dyce didn't want to kill the baby rodents (I'm sure I'd feel the same way), rats/mice skeeve me out so I couldn't really appreciate their cuteness factor. But the rest of the story was top-notch. I loved the premise of the 100-year-old murder case and I didn't guess the killer's identity until just before the reveal. So all-in-all, a great summer read. Take it to the beach with you. You won't be disappointed!

A Fine Mess Indeed!

Elise Hyatt's Daring Finds Mystery series is off to a great start. The first book (Dripped Stripped and Dead) was terrific and the second book French Polished Murder is even better. This book is at times laugh out loud funny and the main characters are people one would enjoy spending time with--especially the heroine Dyce. I also love that her son is a bit of a brat, to often children act like perfect angels in books rather then the mixed bag most kids are.

I love Cas--who would have guessed a hero named Castor could be so appealing? Her childhood friend Ben is both funny and loveable and doesn't come across as a stereotyped gay--although the 'beige' modelling was a bit over the top.

But, Dyce is the glue that holds this series together and she is a fine glue indeed. Her snarkiness to her ex (All-ex) and his fashion victim wife are amusing, but she loves her son and so buries some of her choicest comments in order for her son to continue seeing his father. I admired her saving the baby rats that fell out of the piano, I don't think I would have done anything more then screamed and ran off leaving them to their fate!

Dyce is a complicated but very likable heroine and I look forward to more adventures of Cas and Dyce and I think this is one couple that will not get boring when they marry. Same could be said of Cas's cousin Nick and Ben--they can reunite the 'rat pack'.

Witty, but predictable

The prose started out witty and intelligent, but oddly enough, the story and characters were not clever and/or interesting. After reading the book jacket, I had a hunch as to how this book would end. Several chapters in, I grew bored, skipped to the last few chapters and voila - the ending was exactly as I had predicted it would be.

Ann Wertz Gavin is a competent writer, but this book lacked that certain *something* that causes a book to be passed around amongst friends. Not a page-turner. Definitely more articulate and witty than your average beach read, but just as predictable. After 2 years on the shelves, I'm not surprised I was the first person to check this out from my local library.

A pleasure to read.

The only reason I read these days is to enjoy an author's language and style. I don't care much what a book is about, I just care about whether the words and sentences are fresh and skillful. Ann Garvin's "On Maggie's Watch" is a pleasure to read. I loved the natural dialogue and the direct, expert prose. Every line of dialogue rings true to the character who delivers it, and the story is told in a funny, light, and smart style. Under the light touch, there are some dark feelings, but Garvin handles the mix well. Can't wait to read her next book!

A COMPELLING READ!

This is truly a story of a woman who has suffered a tragedy and her efforts to get her life back on course. Maggie Finley first child was still-born and while the grief was overwhelming for both her and her husband, it has turned Maggie into a entirely different person. When she finds out she is pregnant again, they pull up stakes and move back to her hometown in Wisconsin, where she reconnects with her best friend.

But Maggie becomes obsessed with protecting herself and her family. She restarts the Neighborhood Watch and even becomes the president. Then she learns from the internet that there is a sex offender in the neighborhood. This seems to push her over the edge and causes some very unusual actions.

Her friends and family are very worried about her and work hard to bring the old Maggie back. It may take the birth of this new child to set things right.

This was a very compelling book and the local connection made it even better. Yes, the Wisconsin town was fictional, as was the county, but this book could of took place practically in my backyard.

The topics taken on in this story are very relevant in today's world. The author handles these hot topics with care and makes it so easy to read and feel Maggie's pain and fall totally in love with her and want to be her friend.

I am amazed that this the author's first novel. I hope she is working on her next novel as I write this because I definitely want to read more by Ann Wertz Garvin soon. This is a perfect book for my blog because it will give you an "escape" for a few hours of pure pleasure with a peek into Maggie's life.

When Hannelore arrives, she proves a handful, spouting phrases from American gangster movies and setting her sights on Darcy O’Mara, the one man who makes Georgiana’s heart leap. To make matters worse, Hannelore expresses interest in the Communist Party and arranges to meet one of the members in a bookshop. Georgiana accompanies Hannelore on the assignation only to have the princess discover the young man’s corpse. A Royally Fun Mix of Comedy and Mystery

Lady Georgiana, thirty-fourth in line for the throne, has been doing rather well for herself in 1932 London. She has managed to keep her secret job as a maid from the others of her social set and is even developing a few domestic skills of her own. She just might be able to pull off living on her own.

Unfortunately, things are about to get sticky. Her Majesty has agreed to host the Bavarian Princess in hopes that this beauty will catch the Crown Prince's eye. And the Queen thinks that Georgie is the perfect person to host Princess "Hanni." Suddenly, Georgie must find a way to hire servants with no money. After all, one doesn't say no to the Queen.

But things only get worse when Hanni arrives. She has learned her English by watching American gangster films. Her companion is an awful Baroness. And wherever Hanni goes, trouble follows. And that's before the first body appears. But the potential political implications of the murder could set the uneasy balance in Europe spinning into another war. Can Georgie solve the crime without starting World War II?

This book is equal parts historical novel, comedy, and mystery, and if read that way, it is a pure delight. There are so many funny scenes in the first half of the book. In fact, I had to stifle some laughs when I was reading in public. While there are some strange questions early, the mystery portion doesn't get going fully until the second half, but I was never bored getting there. Once it does get going, it becomes a good puzzle. I caught a few things long before Georgie, but I would never have pieced the solution together. The book is filled with memorable characters who are strong. It was a delight to spend time with them.

There is nothing painful about this book or series. So be sure to catch up with Georgie's latest adventures.

Fabulous cozy mystery with royalty and romance

My next tag is personal favorite, and I chose A Royal Pain by Rhys Bowen. Rhys Bowen is not only one of my favorite authors, but Lady Georgiana is one of my favorite characters as well. Lady Georige, 34th in line to the English throne in 1932, is still working secretly as a maid in order to pay for the daily necessities when the Queen asks her (and you never say no to the Queen) to house and escort Princess Hanni of Bavaria around town in hopes that she will distract the Prince of Wales from his obsession with "that American woman". But Georgie is not only broke, but living without servants! Her maternal grandfather and his next door neighbor step in as butler and housekeeper when the flighty Princess and her entourage arrive. Princess Hanni has learned to speak English from American gangster films, wants to meet "hot and sexy men", and shoplifts from Herrod's. Georgie's hands are more than full, when people start dropping dead around her, and she needs to discover who's murdering them in order to avert an international incident! Georgie is absolutely charming. She hasn't a clue how to flirt, and regularly trips over her own feet. She's sincere and loyal, and remarkably innocent, but she's learning to acquire some backbone (especially in dealing with Wallis Simpson). Bowen writes a bit like a fun tabloid tell-all; you feel like you're getting a sneak peek behind palace walls, but as seen through the eyes of an outsider/insider. Georgie is a unique character, and I simply can't wait for her next adventure. I give the book 5 stars.

But what actually ensues is another madcap adventure for the charming Lady Georgiana Rannoch. Tasked by the Queen to entertain the decidedly odd princess, Georgie must do so while struggling to make a living and keep up appearances. Being a minor royal does not, alas, come with the funds necessary to do either. And Georgie also has an unfortunate habit of stumbling across dead bodies and dark plots, complicating her life even further. But she gets by with a lot of help from her friends, the man-hungry Belinda and the "unreliable rogue" Darcy O'Mara, who describes himself as her "guardian angel." Her sweet and solid ex-copper granddad and his redoubtable neighbor, Mrs. Huggins, also lend a hand as Georgie copes with the princess, a chaotic personal life, and the mysteries and murders around her.
Rhys Bowen's prose positively sparkles. I found myself reading sentences over again just for the sheer pleasure of the words. The book is both fun and funny, and while it may be classified as a "cozy", it doesn't ignore the real world. Soup kitchens, ordinary people dealing with privation, and blackshirts clashing with communists are mixed in with the often frivolous lifestyles of the upper crust. It is interesting to me to see Georgie's awareness of class disparity being challenged. I would like to see this developed in the future. I also long to know more about the intriguing Mr. O'Mara-there is a tantalizing twist to his character in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Bowen's Constable Evans series, but I think I may have to take my heart out of his hands and give it to the delectable Darcy!
I loved this book. After all, I met Noel Coward, the King and Queen of England, the ghastly Wallis Simpson, and a colorful array of fictional characters. I can definitely see these books as a television series. They remind me of P.G. Wodehouse but they have an element of Dorothy Sayers as well, especially Clouds of Witness and Murder Must Advertise. Anyone who can evoke those two writers is a must-read in my book!

She lives in upstate New York.
Marjorie M. Liu is an attorney who has lived and worked throughout Asia. She hails from both coasts, but currently resides in the Midwest, where she writes full-time. Makes my heart sing

I may be a man, and not just a man, but a policeman, but even I like to park the squad car, open a bottle of Evian, unpack a watercress salad, turn up the Celine Dion on my mp3, and enjoy my momentary calm and escape from reality with the latest supernatural thriller/romance from veteran author Maggie Shayne or Marjorie M. Liu, or exciting newcomer Alyssa Day or Meljean Brook. You can imagine my unbridled excitement, then, at having all four of these fabulous authors in one book. I very nearly squealed with delight, but then remembered I was packing heat and almost fifty years old.

The four, unrelated stories of "Wild Thing" pack their own heat, of the passionate paranormal kind. In Maggie Shayne's "Animal Magnetism", Jay, a "hot young cop" (or "me", as I like to call him) tracks down a rapist and becomes involved with Macy, a beautiful lady vet who can talk to and understand animals. One animal in particular, a dog, can identify the rapist, and Macy must convince a skeptical Jay before the determined rapist silences both her and the only witness. Reminds me of the movie "Witness", if you replace the talking dog with that Amish boy.

Marjorie M. Liu's "Hunter Kiss" kicks off her Urban Fantasy series and introduces a young woman who is covered by living tattoos. These personal demons come out at night to protect her from the darkness and evil that lurk in the shadows, but who will protect her from her own demons? Maybe a handsome young cop? Or a slightly paunchy, middle-aged one? Who knows. You'll have to read the story.

Alyssa Day's "Wild Hearts in Atlantis", the second book in her Warriors of Poseidon series, continues the saga of the Atlanteans, sworn to protect humankind but not to desire them. Reminds me of my own oath of duty. Something about protecting, honoring, defending, keeping clean, and being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, and other things. Atlantean High Prince Conlan sends his trusted, outwardly good-natured warrior Bastien to play the diplomat with their sworn enemies and enemies of humankind. One of them, a half-breed, draws in Bastien and draws out his true feelings, testing his allegiance and the pledge that defines his being. My allegiance was tested once. Pepsi One? Diet Coke? But I stayed true, and my being remained intact.

Meljean Brook's "Paradise" is the third installment in her The Guardians series, dealing with vampires and forces that would both tempt and destroy them, like donuts. In "Paradise", the vampire Lucas Marsden, former DA, now a theater owner and head of the vampire community in Ashland, Oregon, receives a visit from the beautiful and mysterious Guardian Selah, sent to protect him and his people from demons that are hunting them. Lucas finds himself immediately attracted to Selah, but can he trust her?

I had to rip the cover off the book because I didn't want my partner to see its provocative cover. Not that I was ashamed to be reading any of the authors, but my partner has a very rigid idea of what a cop should read. When he asked what I was reading, I told him it was a book about a rogue cowboy who shoots a bunch of outlaws. That seemed to satisfy him. These fantastical and passionate stories will satisfy you, bringing out your inner beast and your inner, dare I say it, wild thing.

Excellent anthology...

Paranormal fans rejoice! Four exceptional authors have joined forces to create a fabulous anthology with WILD THING.

Maggie Shayne opens up this anthology with "Animal Magnetism". Macy McNamara is an excellent veterinarian but she has a secret: Macy can communicate with animals. Unfortunately, this talent puts her in jeopardy when Detective Jay Harris enlists her help with an injured dog who has witnessed a brutal crime.

Maggie Shayne takes readers through a gamut of emotions with "Animal Magnetism". She sharply contrasts the brutality of the rapes with the charm and unconditional love of the dogs, particularly with Cassie. The romance between Macy and Jay is extraordinarily well done and I love the witty repartee between the two of them. Maggie Shayne provides some clever but very dark and shocking twists in this phenomenal tale.

"Paradise" by Meljean Brook is yet another entry in her Guardians series. Someone is killing vampires and Guardian Selah is determined to put a stop to it. But first she must enlist the help of Lucas Marsden, leader of the vampire community in Ashland. Lucas is devastated by his guilt after one of the recent deaths. Will Selah and Lucas be able to stop the terror stalking the vampires or will Lucas' guilt overwhelm him instead?

Meljean Brook has created a fascinating world. The depth and complexity of her world building leaves me literally in awe as I want to know more. There are some continuing characters from her other Guardians' book and I think readers who have read her previous books in the series will probably appreciate the characters more as a result.

Marjorie M. Liu introduces readers to "Hunter Kiss". Maxine has a unique gift that enables her to hunt demons. She thought she knew the pattern her life would take but meeting Grant Cooperon turns her whole world upside down.

"Hunter Kiss" is the first story in a new urban fantasy series and wow, what a start! Marjorie M. Liu teases the reader with fascinating tidbits about this phenomenal new world while still providing a very satisfying short story. I love the gumption of Maxine and the entire concept behind the tattoos is perhaps one of the cleverest things I have ever read. "Hunter Kiss" is a tantalizing tale that promises readers a new series that is sure to be a hit.

Alyssa Day concludes this anthology with "Wild Hearts in Atlantis". As one of the Warriors of Poseidon, Bastien considers himself more brawn than brains so he's horrified when he is sent to be a liaison between the Atlanteans and the shape-shifters. His contact is the fiery shape-shifter Kat Fiero, a woman he hasn't been able to forget since their first encounter. Will another one of the Warriors of Poseidon lose his heart?

Alyssa Day really hits her stride in this second story in the Warriors of Poseidon series. Bastien's story incorporates all of the best elements of this complex but very intriguing world. The first book in the series, ATLANTIS RISING, set the stage for the conflicts between all of the various factions within the supernatural community and "Wild Hearts in Atlantis" directly follows up on those uneasy relationships. If you haven't read ATLANTIS RISING, be forewarned that "Wild Hearts in Atlantis" reveals much of the finale from the book. Alyssa Day has solidified me as one of her fans with this very solid sequel!

WILD THING is one of those rare anthologies in which every story provides an interesting twist to the more traditional paranormal themes. There are no dull moments in this anthology! WILD THING is definitely a must read for fans who like their stories on the dark side of paranormal. Easily recommended!

If I can save just one person from wasting their $7 on this piece of crud, I'll consider my civic duty for the day done :)

Let me note that this review contains spoilers, as I feel the need to vent exactly what I disliked instead of being vague about it.

"Animal Magnetism" By Maggie Shayne: Ive read a few of Maggie's solo novels, and some of her short stories in other anthologies, and while I never especially *liked* them, I didnt actively dislike them. She changed all that for me with this story. It'll be a cold day in hell (or a *really* great short story by a fav author that happens to share book space) before I give her any more of my money. I'll start with the most mundane parts. The heroine was a complete snot. In the sample, she wasnt too bad. Sure, chilly and rude, but I figured she'd warm up to the point where I could at least comprehend the hero coming back for more (she never did). The hero was 'eh', although I had to question his judgment for bothering at the effort. My biggest problem came with the plot; they were trying to catch a serial rapist. Right off the bat, that should have raised an eyebrow. I have nothing against edgy romances. I love mysteries and thrillers and am not bothered by the 'very idea' of a rapist villain. But short stories are at heart, fairly formulaic and easily digestible; they just dont have the word count to go through complex layers. When youre dealing with a plot that involves a serial rapist active for several months (according to the story) that has 3 rapes happen in the course of the story itself .... maybe a week? ..., youre using it gratuitously. You owe it to your readers to show that this isnt just insert-random-problem, it means something and can be dealt with, looked at, examined. This wasnt, at all. I cant imagine your average woman looking for a quick distraction/entertainment read and finding several fairly graphically (in terms of detail) written rape scenes. And .... spoilers .... therein lies my biggest complaint. The bad guy breaks into Macy's house for the finale and (surprise) tries to rape her. As the author is describing Macy being held down, and unable to breathe (with a lovely description of the rapist thwarted only by his inability to get it up - gosh, thanks for spending two paragraphs describing that for me, Maggie), Macy isnt fighting or "raging against the light" or anything. She's wishing she could just pass out so this would be over.
What. The. Hell. In real life? I can see this being a very viable thought. In my fiction? I want my girls to be kicking, screaming, fighting, til their last breath so I can at least cheer when she defeats him or the hero comes crashing in to save her (). As an example, when the villain pushes her down to the bed, she tries to think of anything she could grab as a weapon. She remembers a sharpie marker on her bed table. At this point I'd have fine with something incredibly cliche, like stabbing him from behind and hitting him in the eye with the sharpie. Anything! Instead she uses her last few moments on earth to write "I love you Jay" on her hand. The icing on the cake was when she wakes up in the hospital room and everything is all sunshine and rainbows... you see, she didnt get "penetrated" (as the author phrases it) so she wasnt really raped, and thus doesnt have to deal with any emotional or psychological trauma or anything.

Who was the editor who read this and signed off on it? For a romance novel?! Argh!!!

I didnt realize I was going to write so much so I'll sum up the other 4 stories.

1) Two-dimensional emotionally scarred and standoff-ish female? Check
2) Two- dimensional gentle but strong hero who puts up with way too much crap? Check
3) Plot points that seem like the author put a grand total of 20 minutes into developing? Check

I'd give the other stories in this book maybe a 2.5. They're not horrible, but theyre not something you want to waste 2 hours of your life on. Or $7.

Oh, and dont be fooled by the Kindle sample, which is "Animal Magnetism" -- it didnt start off horrible (just, 'eh') but it goes downhill from there.

Left with just a shred of information, Anna sets out to find the killer. Barr brings the intricate, fascinating, and deadly underground world of spelunking into close and intimate focus using Anna's divergent emotions of awe and near terror as she works her way through the total blackness. Readers are immersed in the setting, and Anna's claustrophobia, tangibly intense at times, keeps the tension of the plot tautly controlled. She pushes herself to the limit, determined to solve the mysteries of death and dirty dealings that appear to center on the importance and fate of Lechugilla Cavern. While about half of the story takes place above ground, the intense moments occur in the deep orifices below. Barr has created a variety of characters in the rescue team, each distinct in personality and style. All of the twists and turns of the cave and the plot finally come together in an action-packed ending.

Deep, Dark, Dangerous

Anna Pigeon, Park Ranger, has been called to New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns. She is not a spelunker, but her injured friend requested that she be on the team to bring them out of the caverns. The rescuers will descend over 800 feet in a short time.
This story is rich in details that take Anna across underground cliff faces like Razor Blade Run, through rivers and into the depths of airless passages, where all she wants to see is the sky. The descent must be done in such a way to protect the natural wonders of non-public caverns. On arrival Anna's friend tells her, "It was not an accident."
One of the strong, highly trained companions had murder in the heart. Anna must discover who and why before the killer can strike and succeed. Motives abound among well defined suspects.
Nevada Barr convincingly shows why rangers are called to locations other than their assigned park. Her descriptions are so rich that she must have been in the caves. She is a park ranger herself, and her view of the political structure is as eye-opening as the mystery itself.
Ms. Barr is a great storyteller. This is one of her very best novels. She has included enough clues to help the "who done its?" solve the mystery with Anna.

Nevada Barr is among my very favorite authors, and I'm hooked on the Anna Pigeon series. Occasionally one of her novels will start a tad slowly, but it's worth the entire read. I haven't found any of this series that I HAVEN'T liked so far. Fascinating author.

Mixed results at best....

I was eager to see how this book portrayed the US submarine effort in the Pacific, and how it would stack up against what has to be the Gold Standard, Clay Blair's "Silent Victory". One of the authors, Ron Smith, was himself a submariner during WWII, and Flint Whitlock is an experienced author. Basically, I wanted to like this book, but in my opinion, it just came up short.

The book takes an interesting tack; interspersed with descriptions of the submarine actions during the course of the war, the authors also describe highlights of the Pacific campaign itself. Intertwined with the historical descriptions, we also follow Ron Smith as he enters the Navy, and his somewhat circuitous route to submarine school, via aerial torpedo training. The author ends up aboard one of the older submarines, the USS Seal, one of the mid-1930's designs on the road to the definitive fleet submarine design, epitomized in Gato. We get a parallel narrative which details the problems with torpedoes, and covers many of the early key exploits and losses (such as Howard Gilmore and Mush Morton's Wahoo). If you have never read a history of WWII US submarine action, these will be new to you. However, for those familiar with the historical record from reading "Silent Victory" or a number of other prior histories, these will be rehashes. Nothing new added to these already well know tales. The stories that revolve around Smith himself are certainly very interesting and make for worthwhile reading, Smith is assigned to the base torpedo shop at Pearl in 1943 and then transferred stateside as an instructor. He more or less exits the story at that point, making minor appearances later in the book.

The story continues, with the alternating submarine warfare and the Pacific "island hopping" campaign. Surface fleet battles are described, along with submarine roles in these engagements. In terms of the personal focus, the latter part of the book relates the tragic story of Richard O'Kane's Tang. Tang was sunk off the Chinese coast when, in a surface attack, one of her torpedoes made a circular run and struck the stern of the submarine, rapidly sinking it. This is told with the spotlight on Clay Decker, one of the crew members who escaped from Tang, and imprisoned in Japanese POW camps along with a handful of other crew members (including O'Kane) who escaped Tang. Again, this makes a very good human interest story, and the suffering they experienced at the hands of their captors is truly disturbing. This part of the story is interspersed with later war history, such as the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the exploits of Gene Fluckey in Barb, and George Street's action with Tirante.

And speaking of history, several "facts" presented in the book are inaccurate. Submarines were never painted in a mottled camouflage pattern of "blue and gray splotches". Barb was not greeted at the pier by Nimitz, MacArthur and Roosevelt after her 11th war patrol (for which Fluckey received the Medal of Honor). Fluckey met the President and the two commanders privately after the 9th patrol. Also, afterwards he was not making his 12th patrol as captain of Barb, it was his fifth. Barb had gone out under other captains in earlier patrols. Finally, Admiral Halsey did not die in Pasadena, California, but rather on Fisher's Island, off the coast of Connecticut. If you're going to write history, check your facts!

In the end, I think the authors attempted to take on too much in a 386 page book. The entire scope of the Pacific War, the US submarine force role, and two very interesting human stories is too much to do more than sketch out in a book that long. While I would not discourage anyone from reading the book, I don't feel particularly strong about it either. It wouldn't be the first book I would recommend to someone interested in WWII submarine history.

A history and a great story-a 2-for-one book

This is Ron Smith's 2nd book and it adds a lot that wasn't in the "Torpedoman." It tells of his growing up and becoming a submarine sailor. But it does so in a unique way. Every other chapter is written by his co-author, Flint Whitlock, who is a major military writer in his own right. Flint marches across the Pacific and time with his story of the submarine service while Ron tells of his tribulations and his life from a young man wanting to be an aviator to becoming a Torpedoman. The near death experiences aboard a WWII submarine are very dramatic and will give the reader an appreciation of the horror these men faced.
A great read from two established writers.

Sheds light on many things...

Ron Smith was my grandfather. His stories in both this book and Torpedoman are as true as can be. From a kid until a full grown adult, I can remember him recounting his days in the submarine service. He was so proud of his service that his F-150 even had the submarine insignia on both sides. You will find no truer stories than The Depths of Courage or Torpedoman. The tales he retold to us were brutally honest at times, but were always the truth. My grandpa was passionate about his country, his service, and his family. I believe this is expressed in both of his books.

Unfortunately, he passed away last night (9/12/08), but his memories remain in the pages he's written and the stories he has told.

In this cogent history, novelist and medieval historian Newman (The Witch in the Well, The Real History Behind the DaVinci Code) takes a cheerfully skeptical view of end-of-times prophesies beginning with the many flood stories of pre-historical Mesopotamia (including Noah's Ark), and ending with modern apocalyptic visions like the Branch Davidians cult, the contemporary Christian idea of rapture, and the (secular) Y2K scare. In between these bookends, Newman dips into the apocalyptic beliefs of early Christians (such as the vision of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse), Chinese Daoism, the fictional 12th century magician Merlin ( "associated with prophecy" throughout Europe for more than 800 years), and the increasingly infamous Mayan calendar that supposedly "ends" on December 21, 2012, a false prophesy Newman attributes to commentators who don't understand the writing, religion or archaeoastronomy of the ancient civilization: "the Mayans, like the Egyptians, were more concerned with keeping the world going than with when it was going to end." In this jaunty trip through the Apocalypse, Newman looks at the many, many theories about civilization’s end that began springing up close to civilization’s beginning. The story of the Flood, which appears in numerous cultures, suggested the earth had almost been destroyed once. That global memory must have led to the realization it could happen again. Let the predictions begin! In Western culture, many are familiar not only with biblical prophecy but also with the writings of Nostradamus, both convoluted in their own ways. Now that 2012 is near, the musings of the Maya have taken center stage. But along the way, there has also been the Chinese millennial movements, the agendas spouted by various messiahs, and—let us not forget—the “disappointing” Y2K. Newman, who has done her research (and notes that her book could have been a thousand pages longer), doesn’t seem too worried, although she lists numerous phenomena that could possibly end existence, likes solar flares or an asteroid hitting the earth. Interesting insight into the eternal wait for .... the end

This is rather a difficult book to classify, as I haven't read it as a history as such, but rather an interesting overview of how we human beings apparently have, throughout time, been patiently (or impatiently as the case may be) waiting for the end of time.

I confess to being a keen devourer of apocolypse and post-apocolypse fiction, so it has been very interesting to read how different societies have considered that perhaps all that we have will soon enough come to an end, usually based upon the cumulative evils of loose living and disrespect for one's deity. Indeed, much has been said in recent times of our modern world's moral and economic collapse, and some people genuinely believe that we are living in "end times".

If you believe this and think that this will give you further insight, this is NOT the book for you. Sharan Newman has a rather wicked sense of humour, which I appreciate immensely (for example when discussing horned beasts which are prevalent in many texts she comments that there must be a nest somewhere, probably in the bottomless pit), but I can see that this might not be the case for all. She does not labour on the beliefs of any particular faith, though The Bible is regularly mentioned as it is so well studied; and she does address the beliefs of the monoethist religions, as well as those brave individual souls who have, over time, announced that the world will end on such and such a date, only to be disappointed and forced to recalculate their stance. Even Nostadamus gets a chapter, as does the hype and hysteria that surrounds the Y2K bug.

This is a really unusual, interesting and entertaining book, and which offers one final interesting insight - people who strongly believe that the end of the world is nigh, usually believe that they will be saved. I think this quite a telling point.

Lighthearted romp through the apocalypse

This is a survey of the various groups through the ages who have predicted that the "end is near." Everyone's covered - from ancients Mesopotamians to Heaven's Gate and from the Mayans to the Chinese. A lot of these stories may be familiar (Nostradamus), but some of them are not (a Chinese guy who thought he was Jesus's brother). Some of the latter are very interesting. The tone throughout is one of decided skepticism, but treated in a very light manner. Personally, I really appreciated that, as well as the short and sweet treatment of the many topics. It makes for a quick, fun read. If you want some more serious tome (hi, Dan!), though, you really need to look elsewhere.

Witty and informative but lacking in depth

Medieval Historian turned novelist Sharan Newman takes us in a long journey that goes from the beginning of times to the modern era on an apocalyptic quest. Written just before of the end of the year 2012, the book replies to questions that were specially relevant that year: How have humanity, different cultures and civilisations dealt with the impending end of times? Which things do they have in common? Which elements are particular to each culture or religious group? Do all cultures have or had an Armageddon myth?

This a book on popular History, simply written, but with a good reference system and serious research work. A wicked witty sense of humour pervades the entire book, so it is very enjoyable to read and will give you some laughing moments. However, this is a reliable book.

The introduction and conclusion are simple and focused. Newman explains how she has approached the study, why some things are included and not others, as well as the common denominators or themes in all apocalyptic groups. There have been "gazillion" doomsday groups throughout History, so Newman has chosen the most significant historically, others that intrigued her, and others that are representative of patterns of behaviour and ideas among these movements. Then, we are presented with a straightforward chronological study that covers all major religions and areas but heavily sided on the Western Word and Christianity. However there is plenty of information about Muslim and Jews groups as well. Beyond Western Europe and the USA we are given some details about the Middle East, China, Nigeria, India, the Mayans, and some Indigenous people (the Cherokees and Hopi nations in the USA and the Natives of Guinea and Papua-New Guinea). Once we we enter in the modern era, each chapter has details about specific religious movements and groups, the leading figures and their specific views on the end of the world.

The period and field covered is vast, so the research work involved is remarkable. Although primary sources are used, most of the book is based on secondary sources, something that is always questionable from a historical point of view especially if you are a doctorate. Yet, this book is addressed to the general public not to the Academia, and Newman does a great job at giving an overall view of the subject and is honest enough to mention some of the shortcomings of her own research when necessary. The reference notes system is good.

I really enjoyed Newman's explanations on the Mayan Calendar, the Cargo Cults, the somewhat esoteric nerdy computation of a date for the end of times that obsessed scientists of the 18th and 19th century (Newton included), how the creation of the State of Israel was supported by fundamentalist Christian groups that did want the Jews to disappear, or the utopian happy and peaceful (rare!) end of time envisioned by Joachim de Fiore and Joseph Priestly, who are the exception to too many Armageddon nightmares. You certainly will find your favourite doomsday group and moment.

One of the things I like the most about Newman is that she contextualises all the movements she discusses, and tries to explain them using the parameters of the cultural and religious humus they fed upon. I also loved the tables at the end of the book with a short summary of the dates, type, and brief description of the apocalyptic movements mentioned in the book.

THE WEAKEST LINKS
The main downside of this book, to me, is that it is a bit one-dimensional as, from the very beginning, Newman discards going beyond the facts or even considering psychological or sociological theories to give some sort of explanation to the pervading "doomsdayness" of the history of the human race. The juice is always in the "why?", as the "why?" is what gives us historical understanding. Therefore, questions that were were in my mind when I purchased this book are replied with lack of seriousness, for example why do humans need of this apocalyptic Armageddon in the modern world? She replies: "among nonreligious people is the same as that with ghosts, mutant ants, vampires, and invasions from space. Most of us don’t really believe in them, but it’s fun to let ourselves be scared for a while" (location 4496)": Other questions are not even posed. For example, which social or psychological function do they have, if any? Why dreams and visions are so important in millenarian beliefs? Why charisma and not integrity are associated with fundamentalist messianic movements? Why non-religious doomsday beliefs are so widespread in the age of technology beyond being "cool"? What is the Antichrist, specifically?

At times the chapters stretch unnecessarily with details I found superfluous as there is not much information about the beliefs of a given group beyond them being millenarian. Besides, I missed more focus on other areas of the world. India is passed in a few pages, and I missed more details about Indigenous populations that did mythologies that do not fit in the major religions: Australian Aborigines, the Inuit, Sub-saharian pre-colonial societies. They are not even mentioned. Perhaps they never had any belief about the end of the world, but I would have loved being told so, if that is the case!

There are too many "perhaps", "it is said", "my guess", "probably", "some say" and other vague language that is not always reference-based for my liking.

WHAT WHAT WHAT?!
I found this statement about Joachim de Fiore and my jaw dropped to the floor: "He was born in 1135 in the Italian town of Calabria" (Kindle's location 1455). Since when is Calabria a town? She means in a town in Calabria.Which town?

Her biography of Nostradamus, footnote number three, states: "This biography is based on the work of Edgar Leroy in 1972. This book is almost impossible to find, showing that accuracy is not always rewarded. I have compiled this from quotes of his work in other sources. Not my favorite way of doing research". Isn't that what degree students do (and the sort of excuse they present) in end of the year essays?

BAD KINDLE EDITION
I am tired of purchasing books on Kindle, being charged full price and finding that that they are badly rendered in e-book format, out of care, respect and consideration for the e-book reader. Like here. Look at the mess of the notes system in this book. The book uses endnotes as far as chapter 17, they are not numbered, but correlative, starting from a to z, then aa, ab, ac, and so on. Then, you get to chapter 18 and the notes start to be numbered, but they are endnotes at the end of each chapter not at the end of the book as the first, and they are not correlative between chapters. The final index is not paginated or linked, so partially useful. You can check for a specific word, and see if it is there, but if it is there, you won't know where. Ridiculous! And some misspelling and typos have not been corrected, like Giralamo instead of Girolamo..

IN SHORT
Light, entertaining and informative with a good deal of research and written with a great sense of humour, this History of the End of the World sheds light on the myriad forms that the fear of the end of times has taken among humans from different parts of the world, Christians especially. Yet, the great work is somewhat wasted by a lack of depth in a study that rarely goes beyond the merely factual.
