The Dark Knight

Dennis O'Neil really knows his Dark Knight and this novelization of the movie adds substance even if you've seen the movie. You discover what happened to the Scarecrow in between the two movies and other bits that extends the movie's storyline. O'Neil captures the internal thoughts of Bruce Wayne/Batman, something that a movie can't quite do. Well done for a "novelization."

Nice companion to the film

I love the film so I figured I'd read the paperback. In the book, you get a little more insight into the characters and a little more background on the story. It's not a word-for-word copy of the script for the film so you'll be getting a few things different.

Blatant Rush Job

This book is abysmal. It's poorly written, shallow and feels rushed. A lot of the subtle moments from the film are totally removed , (for example, the tone of the Jokers voice, his walk, just how terrifying he is - all these details add up to make a mental picture in your mind which is part of what reading fiction is all about. O'Neil describes none of them, the Joker could be a postman for all the info we get.)

We get no inclination about how the characters are feeling, or how they do things - much of the dialogue from the film is reported with little emotion and it feels as if Denny O Neil was rushing his way through the Nolan script in order to meet a tight deadline. The action scenes are dull and overall the writing just feels stale, it doesn't jump off the page at all.

A sample of the turgid prose - he describes Comissioner Leob's death as '...he made a few gurgling sounds and within seconds was dead.' Talk about sucking the drama out of a scene.

There's also page after page of boring exposition. Fair enough, the story of what Crane got up to after 'Begins' is a neat inclusion, but it bogs down the book and gets in the way of the actual TDK story. O' Neil seems to do this for more than one of the characters, even the infodump for Bruce Wayne is annoying. The events of the film don't begin until you're a quater of the way through the book, the first couple of chapters should've been called 'In case you haven't read Batman Begins...'

Poor. Only gets a star because I'm a Batman fanatic, otherwise I would've stopped reading it after the first chapter.

Wild Action And Hot Romance Makes For A Great Wild Riders Series Conclusion!

The suspense/action plot of Riding The Night is somewhat different from the other "Wild Riders" stories because AJ and Pax are on a road trip vacation riding their Harley's. AJ wants to return to the town where he grew up to see if any old acquaintances still live there, in particular his childhood sweetheart, Teresa. Readers learn from the book's Prologue that AJ had left town 10 years earlier, leaving a 18 year old Teresa brokenhearted. He did this with the best of intentions because he was a young, in trouble youth and didn't want to ruin her chances for a good life.

AJ and Pax met and bonded as friends when they were recruited into the Wild Riders covert government agency by General Grange Lee. As part of their training they were required to share details of their difficult upbringings often laced with childhood abuse. AJ and Pax learned they had similar backgrounds and as they spent more time together their personalities and interests meshed extremely well. As part of the path to what became a special friendship they found they were attracted to the same types of women and began to enjoy 'threesomes' with the opposite sex. Both these men have major commitment issues, Pax especially has no intention of entering into a 'forever' relationship with a woman. Falling in love just isn't part of the equation. Love equals hurt after all. This is why both he and AJ always entered into their sexual encounters with a no strings attached expectation and make sure the lady in question is of the same mindset.

Then along comes AJ's childhood sweetheart Teresa who the guys learn has bought a failing bar on the outskirts of town and turned it into a lucrative business. Pax is immediately attracted to the raven haired beauty and AJ of course can't help but feel drawn to his old love now that she has matured into a striking woman. The waters are muddy however because 5 years previous to the book's opening Teresa endured a horrible physical and emotional assault, leaving deep scars. She hasn't been sexually attracted to a man since and while she keeps up a brave front and has learned to protect herself, she suffers a deep seated fear. Then AJ and Pax walk into her bar and things change.

What I really liked about Teresa, AJ and Pax's romance is that Jaci Burton crafts their story with painstaking delicacy over the course of the narrative. She doesn't just throw these three people into bed together for hot sex from the get go. AJ and Pax allow Teresa the space and time she needs to trust them enough to want to be with them. Essentially both the guys give her time to get used to the other before they share her sexually. And, after learning what happened to her they make VERY sure she wants them as much as they want her. What I also loved about this story was the relationship between AJ and Pax, the depth of trust and commitment is palpable, they have worked through any issues with respect to jealousy concerning women and it just isn't there. Each knows the other better than himself and they know when push comes to shove on the job they will protect each other to the death.

Teresa's brother Joey is the leader of the "Thorns" a biker group that is on the up and up, in other words they not involved in illegal activity. A rival gang called the "Fists"are trying to move into Thorn territory to obtain access to the town's waterway so they can import drugs with ease. Ms. Burton develops a thrilling, suspense sub-plot involving the murder of the Fists's leader in Teresa's bar during a fight. Teresa's brother is falsely accused of the murder and she is the only eye witness as to who actually committed the crime. AJ and Pax's vacation therefore becomes an unexpected dangerous, treacherous mission that uncovers a conspiracy, and very nearly costs all their lives. The story is packed full of Wild Rider hot lovin, fast action and nail biting suspense!

There is one scene at the end of the story where Ms. Burton brings all the Wild Rider guys and their gals together at the Headquarters in Dallas. It was a nice way to finish up the series and let readers know how everyone is faring. As for Rick and AJ? Well, whether or not they can get past their issues and finally commit to one woman is the big question and not revealed until the final pages. I will say, readers finally learn what "AJ" stands for - poor guy! lol

I thoroughly enjoyed "Riding The Night", and hope everyone who chooses to read it will too. I think this one can easily be read as a standalone story, it would certainly whet the appetite for the other books in the series.

AJ loved Teresa, but left town because he knew he was not good enough for her. A decade later, he is no longer that insecure troubled teenager as he has become a Wild Rider federal agent. He returns to Missouri on vacation, accompanied by his partner Pax.

Teresa never forgot the boy who deserted her. She owns the Greasy Rider bar that AJ and Pax stop at for a drink. She is elated her AJ is back, but also finds she wants Pax too. They reciprocate as AJ never stopped loving her and Pax is falling in love with her. However, a brawl at the bar leaves one dead and Teresa's brother Joey accused of murder. The two Wild Riders accompanied by Teresa head to South Dakota for the big bike shindig to find the real killer and each other.

The latest Wild Riders erotic romantic suspense (see Riding on Instinct and Riding Temptation) is a delightful entry as the three key players and their interrelationships feel genuine. The story line is fast-paced in and out of the sack (and some other places) as the dynamic trio seeks to identify who the killer is; not one of them believes Joey did it. Fans will enjoy Riding the Night with this ménage a trois while wondering how their triangle will end.

I don't usually write reviews, but I had to with this book

I dont' usually write reviews, but I felt I had to with this book. After I read the description of the book, I was debating whether or not I wanted to read it. I have read and enjoyed all of the other books in the "Wild Riders" series, especially Riding on Instinct--Shadoe & Spences story, as well as most of Jaci Burton's other books, but I just couldn't "get into" this one. The whole plot of boy loves girl, boy leaves girl, boy comes back into girls life 10 years later and wants to share her with his best friend was a little too much to accept. Pax turned into the Alpha Male almost immediately and Teresa went right along with it. You would think that she would have favored AJ over Pax due to their past relationship, instead, almost every time they were "together", they treated AJ like he was the third wheel or like they were doing him a favor by letting him participate.

I know people are not going to agree with my review, but I'm just stating my opinion on what I interpreted from this book. On a different note, if any of you didn't read "Riding on Instinct", READ IT!!! You will not be disappointed.

Lillian's father deserts his wife and young daughter literally, and then her mother deserts her figuratively -- disappearing deeply into the solace of books as a coping mechanism. As Lillian takes on the management of the household, she discovers an intuition for cooking and uses food alchemy to try to reach her mother. Later, when grown, Lillian applies this intuition to operating a first-class restaurant and conducting an annual series of cooking classes called the School of Essential Ingredients.

Through themes associated with a particular food or meal, each chapter explores one class and the life of one of the students: a mother lost in the needs of young children; a long-married couple; a kitchen designer; a young widower; a misfit teenager; a software engineer; and a woman moving into the middle stages of dementia.

The writing is sensual and lush, the stories tender and hopeful, with a magical realism evocative of Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate. Since I finished the book, I've wanted nothing more than to read the stories of the next year's class. Highly recommended.

Intense, emotional descriptions of food deepen and enrich the gems of character studies that comprise the novel

When she was a little girl, Lillian discovered the power of food to bring people back to themselves. After Lillian's father left the family, Lillian's mother retreated into a fictional world, her face always hidden behind the pages of a book. Only when Lillian, desperate to reconnect with her mother, enlisted the help of an "Abuelita" from the neighborhood grocery store, did she discover that a perfectly prepared dish, a few "essential ingredients," had the ability to bring her mother back to reality --- and to her daughter.

This ability of food, and cooking, to connect people with themselves, their past and each other is the common theme of Erica Bauermeister's THE SCHOOL OF ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS. The novel gets its title from the cooking school that Lillian, now an adult, runs on evenings when her popular, high-end restaurant is closed. On the first Monday of each month, Lillian's restaurant kitchen is filled with a colorful assortment of amateur cooks, some eager to deepen their own culinary connections, some unsure what brought them to this place.

There's Claire, who's been so smothered by the constant physical and emotional demands of being a young wife and mother that she's forgotten what it means to make time and space for her own interests. There's Carl and Helen, an older couple whose seemingly perfect marriage hides a history of betrayal, redemption and hard work. There's Tom, whose passion for food was ignited by the love of his life. And there's Isabelle, whose short-term memory is failing her in her old age, but whose rich, long life rushes back to the present when she indulges in the nourishing, delicious food Lillian's restaurant prepares.

THE SCHOOL OF ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS will likely appeal to fans of THE FRIDAY NIGHT KNITTING CLUB, THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB and other novels where a group encounter serves as the foil for exploring individuals' stories. Unlike those books, however, Bauermeister's is best read not as an overarching story but as a series of linked character studies, as exquisitely prepared and satisfying as the dishes Lillian prepares in her restaurant. Although two of the characters do begin a tentative romance and one fulfills a career aspiration, the focus here is less on where they're going, plot-wise, and more on where they've been and who they are.

And then there's the food. Bauermeister has a gift for writing about food in sensual, evocative terms, connecting the dish's rich flavors not only to her characters' rich histories but also to the reader's inner palate. Wanted to LOVE it.

I saw the great reviews and the book summary and was really expecting to LOVE this book. It was even my recommendation for our ladies book club. We only select female authors, agree with Ms. Bauermeister's perspective on promoting them and love cooking classes and food. At the discussion session for the book though, the other ladies walked away with feelings similar to mine. What I did like is that it was a book about everyday life, relationships, emotions and of course... food!

I found it very difficult to engage and enjoy the characters, ambience and storyline the author was weaving due to what I though was an overwhelming number of metaphors and similes used throughout each page of the book. So many, that I eventually found myself counting them and many times, there were several per page... one page after the next. It just seemed very forced.

Writing a book is such a difficult, personal accomplishment and I mean no disrepect to the author. As she continues to write, I hope the trusts her own beautiful words and descriptions to take the reader on her journeys rather than relying on the comparisons that kept taking me off course in this novel.

House of Thunder

This book was first released in the early 80s under one of Koontz' pseudonyms. Susan wakes up in the hospital after a car accident. At first she can't remember anything about herself but her memory gradually returns. In the hospital, she starts to see what appears to be the ghosts of four fraternity boys who killed her boyfriend thirteen years ago. Are they really ghosts, or is she losing her sanity?

The premise is a good one and it keeps you interested. But the buildup is a bit too long compared to the ending. She encounters her tormentors several times, but it never feels like there's any imminent threat to her until the last half of the book. About 100 pages before the ending, the story really takes off and it's a great read until the somewhat too abrupt ending.

Not one of Koontz' best, but still definately an entertaining read. A weak 4 stars.

You never truly know whats going on

This is a very interesting book to say the least. It's one that you never truly know whats going on. You may think you do but you really don't. At one point I thought I knew and I was close or partially right. Then when it was done I realized that is was so much larger than I had thought. If you like books that throws you curves all the time; ones that you never really on what's going on; ones that at the ending you have to laugh and go wow, I didn't quite see that comming than go get this book and enjoy.

Chiller To Thriller

Susan Thornton is the main character in this book. After a car crash she wakes up in a hospital and can't remember various parts of her life. What she does remember is a murder she witnessed when she was younger. Then anytime someone mentions her employer, who she can't remember panic sets in.
This was a great fast paced book. I read it in one day. Like most of the books by Mr. Koontz, the characters are colorful and well written. At times this book is a little far fetched but that's fiction.
If your looking for a book that is part medical thriller, espionage thriller, supernatural and just a lot of fun to read, then this is for you.
I gave this book 5 stars and have recommended it to many of my friends.
Pick it up and enjoy.

I love every book Joey Hill writes. This one is no exception. I loved how it transcended series's. The characters always have emotional depth and the love between H/h is always smoldering. Beautifully written. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Joey Hill has out done herself with the third installment in her mermaid series. This daring book explores the dark side of human nature. What is really evil?

In her latest book, Alexis (the daughter of the angel Jonah and the mermaid Anna) has always kept herself slightly apart because her power to feel other's emotions can be overwhelming. When she begins to have erotic dreams of a mysterious and sensuous lover she is troubled but not worried. Unfortunately, Alexis does not realize she is part of magical spell of binding. The man of her dreams is actually real and part of an evil world where there is only death and despair. During one of her dreams Alexis suddenly finds herself transported to the Dark One world where she finds herself a hostage.

Dante has dreamed of this moment. His spell has worked and the goddaughter of the witch who trapped him here will finally do his bidding. Dante plans to use Alexis as leverage in an attempt to get the witch to open the doorway into his mother's world. A world of freedom from the Dark One world. Dante is half vampire and half Dark One and as such is feared innately evil. To survive in this harsh work he has killed and sacrificed. When his vampire mother was brought to this world, she was raped and grew pregnant with him. Both were unable to escape. Dante has had to: beg, scrape and terrorize to gain his independence in a world that only respects violence and cruelty. To survive he has had to be cunning and brutal. When his mother finally went insane and died, Dante only had the cherished stories of her world and vowed to find his way there no matter the cost. But when Dante transports Alexis into his world her beauty and gentle nature make him feel emotions he has never felt before. With Alexis he finds there is another side to life, one that scares as well as enthralls him. As he reaches for the world that was stolen from him he must come to grips with his past of violence. One which he realizes Alexis has no part of.

This was a thrilling read from start to finish as I was quickly drawn in the powerful relationship between Dante and Alexis. Each needed each other to realize their full potential. Alexis may be gentle and caring but she in extremely understanding with her empathetic skills. She is the ideal person to accept Dante's special individuality as she guides him in this new world. Her courage and fortitude as she stands up and stands beside Dante are inspiring. As Dante grows and realizes the new world he has claimed is not easily mastered I was fascinated with his odd mix of: shrewdness, naivety and ability to work through his troubled past. Dante is the most darkly charismatic hero I have ever read. Even as I was repelled by his past I was enthralled by his compelling nature. His drive to change himself and make sense of his new world was transforming and mesmerizing to read.

I really feel Mermaid's Ransom pushes the envelope. For anyone who is bored with the typical romance and loves the paranormal, this is a book you will not soon forget. It is both edgy and magical. I would not recommend it for readers who enjoy light romances. The scenes between Dante and Alexis are sexually charged and the many characters are not cut and dried. Dante's struggle to make sense of his new world and redeem himself with the help of Alexis was gripping and intense. And Dante's history of violence and torment do not make him an easy hero to read. As he fights against his dark and dominant nature there is very real angst and emotion. This is a memorable book that I found difficult to let go!

A savage and pleasurable read

Ms. Hill has created a world worse than Hell. Hell is about redemption, but in the Dark One world, there is only utter evil. No light. I cannot express how much her work affects me. I was honestly horrified at the evil of Dante's world, where murder was not bad, only blinked at, accepted. Dante is a savage, beastial creature who, at first, seems incapable of anything beyond violence. Meet Lex, a girl whose happy little world is smashed apart when she realizes that she does not get to choose who she loves. Lex's life is ripped open and made vulnerable to the evil of the human heart. A MUST read. You will NOT be sorry.
