After All These Years, This is The Answer!

I have done it all, in an effort to lose weight. Yes, I've tried weight Watchers, The Zone, even lap-band (which went terribly wrong)Redux, Fen-fen. I can't even imagine how much danger I put myself into with some of these methods. Oh yeah-even the "Grapefruit Diet."

I lost 10 pounds in two weeks on the Rice Diet. Along with the brown rice (which keeps cravings for salt and sugar at bay) I added raisins,1/2 banana and some chunk pineapple for breakfast. This is only what I do and you will find your way. For lunch, I would have raw vegetables with salsa! to top the brown rice For dinner, I would have steamed vegetables and the McCormicks's flavored spices which are salt-free. I didn't even miss the salt (which was my BIG craving) or the sugar.
In my case, my thinking processes cleared up (I felt less muddled) and as a woman who is post-menopausal, that is quite an endorsement.

Initially, my reason for going on the Rice Diet (I don't even call it a diet, but a "food plan") was because, as a survivor of breast cancer (six years into recovery) I had a pretty bad case of lymphodema to deal with in my left arm.I was always told to limit salt, but it wasn't working. In a week I started to notice that the swelling had gone down noticeably.
As a failed dieter, I can't say enough about this food plan.

Best Diet Book I've Read!

Despite some of the crappy reviews I decided to get this book anyway and take a shot at it since I know one person in my life who has had some dramatic weight loss in just 30 days from this plan.

I'm glad I bought this book. Unlike other diet books that I've read in the past that just talk about the diet plan, this book also talks about yoga, tai chi, meditation (taking time for yourself), walking, and breathing...all elements necessary for losing weight and keeping it off. It makes the whole idea of "lifestyle change" complete rather than being some half-baked diet plan that I'll stay on for a few weeks at the most.

And the diet isn't just about rice, as the title leads us to believe. You can eat other starches too like pasta and potatoes. I like how I can eat fruit and veggies. Warning: Meat eaters will have a hard time adjusting. I'm a vegetarian and this is the ONLY diet book I've ever come across that isn't pushing chicken and other meats.

Finally, the most important element of this diet is that it allows you to detox in the first phase so you're cleaning your body out, getting rid of excess water weight, and gearing up for lots of weight loss, energy, and a new body.

This is an awesome book. If you're on the fence about it because of some of the poor reviews, I can guarantee that the people who degraded the book didn't use it. They were probably stuffing brownies in their face while reading the book and then have the nerve to say it's the worst diet book ever, or that it won't work. How would they ever know?

Get this book! You'll be happy you did!

Lost 25 pounds in 5 months

Between June 3 and Oct 13 of 2011, eating specifically as indicated in this book I easily lost 25 pounds. I haven't done any additional exercise or anything to boost metabolism. I do, and have always walked 3.5 miles a day - and continued with that practice during this time. Three things I'd share from my experience. First, I read reviews that said the recipes were way too complex. The recipes are provided to give you help at getting diversity with this way of eating. But truthfully, I just ate beans, rice, vegetables, fruit and yogurt in the no-fat, no-salt, no-sugar, no-alchohol, no-caffeine, 1000-calorie a day way they describe. I spice my food with hot pepper and various herbs - but it is just a simple way to eat. Second, I've spoken to people who think of this as too strict or too bland. As to bland - your tastebuds adapt and blossom quickly and the things that you once found bland become delicious. As to strict, I allowed myself to have nights or events when I ate anything I wanted or whatever was served at an event or dinner. Then the next day I just went back to this way of eating. Maybe I could have lost weight faster, but by doing this I have never felt deprived. Third, prior to going on the diet I became very conscious of how food addictions and cravings were ruling my life. I actually experimented, one by one, with removing these from my diet. By doing this, I learned what each craving felt like - what the thoughts felt like that each craving produced. So when I started this way of eating I was very prepared to understand what I was experiencing in the first week or so when all of my cravings (which weren't being fed) were "talking" to me. This allowed me to not act on them, or to gradually stop giving into them. Now, I am craving free - and very happy eating this way. Occassionally, when I get busy and forget to eat I will get an intense craving that feels like a sugar craving - but I have learned that this is just my body's way of saying, "I am hungry, feed me good food." So I will eat a real meal and not eat a candy bar or whatever.
This book is full of great learnings presented both in clear language, in case studies and stories, and in recipe form. It is a wonderful resource - and best it is a tested and proven way of losing weight given from the longest runing proven weight-loss clinic in the US. I am delighted to give my highest recommendation to this book. It is more than a weight-loss book, it is a well-documented weight-loss book that will restore your sanity and give you control in an area of your life that you currently have none. Don't hesitate to buy it and try it.

Excellent series

I've read all three books in this series and enjoyed them tremendously. While I really don't have any interest in the miniatures aspect of this series, the characters are very well-developed and I find I truly care about what happens to them. Maddie is the star of the series! I'm not sure such a murder spree is realistic in a small town....why can't these authors ever create a crime to solve that is something other than murder...but overall, I enjoyed these tremendously and look forward to more.

Delightful Read

A delightful read with special appeal to hobbyists.

Full disclosure: I'm one of the mystery authors involved in the [...] We joined forces because we all write mysteries involving hobbies. (Pretty obvious, eh?) But...we've only met each other virtually, and I'd never read anything by Margaret Grace (Camille Minichino). So when I received the ARC (Advance Reading Copy) of Murder in Miniature, I opened the book with excitement and trepidation. What if I didn't like her work?

Whew. Very quickly, my fears were allayed.

Murder in Miniature is a delightful read with special appeal to hobbyists. The protagonist, Geraldine Porter, is a complex woman, recovering from the loss of her husband, unsure sometimes how to do the "right thing," and devoted to her granddaughter and friends. She defines herself as "a pushover for difficult personalities," but Gerry is no victim. She's simply a woman who accepts imperfection--in her miniatures, in her life and in her friends.

Gerry's involvement as an amateur sleuth makes sense, which is always a challenge in a book of this ilk. The underlying complexities of Gerry's life round her out as a character, and provide realistic stumbling blocks to crime solving. Unlike many cozies, Gerry evolves over the course of the book, and we, as readers, relish seeing her review her life and come to new conclusions.

All in all, a most satisfying read. Here's the lagniappe: I love miniatures. The author gave me just enough about the hobby to make me eager to work on my own dollhouse and room boxes. Any book that not only entertains me but also helps me rediscover a lifelong passion is a winner! And that's exactly what Margaret Grace has here: A winning series.

Can Gerry Find the Small Clues?

Geraldine "Gerry" Porter got talked into serving as the chair of the summer craft fair. Granted, she was going to be there anyway selling what she could from her many dollhouses and miniatures. She even took advantage of her position to place herself next to Linda Reed, a friend and follow miniaturist.

But the fair hasn't been open long when Linda disappears only to call Gerry in the middle of the night from a pay phone in the middle of nowhere. When Gerry picks her up, Linda refuses to answer any questions. But the questions get even bigger when the body of an unidentified woman is discovered in the same location. What is going on? How is Linda connected? Can Gerry clear her friend or will her digging just create more problems?

This isn't a bad series debut at all. The plot starts a little slowly, but it builds quite nicely until I was quite hooked. Gerry is an endearing main character. And I loved her sidekicks, especially her granddaughter Maddie and nephew Skip. The small town was also charming, and I couldn't help but smile at all the references to Lincoln the book managed to work in.

But the book does have a couple problems as well. The biggest is Linda and her family. We are supposed to care for them and root for them to be cleared of the crimes. However, they aren't at all likable. Furthermore, the book occasionally gives way to asides. I don't mind a few, especially if they are humorous, but a few times they were clumped together and irritated me.

This is one of those books that I would enjoy while reading but really didn't want to sit down and read when I wasn't. I think I would give this book 3.5 stars if I could. I'm sure hobby enthusiasts will enjoy it much more then I did.

dull, contrived, shallow

Consists mostly of similar entries in the vein of 'this general should have moved east instead of west, quicker instead of slower'. No real intriguing or interesting outright mistakes. Author demonstrates lack of depth in his historical knowledge, comes to erroneous over simplified conclusions.

One historian's list, yours will vary

The first thing to point out is that Bill Fawcett is not trying to make a "definitive" or "Top 100" list of historical blunders. Instead, I assume he is listing here a group of blunders that he thinks readers will find interesting, and/or those he can write the most authoritatively about. As such, a few of the items in here, and a few that are missed, are going to raise the ire of professional and armchair historians alike. There are clear patterns - Roman and American (U.S.A.) history is perhaps overemphasized. He has a whopping 17 (!) entries from WWII - how each of these 17 could be a history-turning blunder is not explained, and together it implies that without the worst series of bad judgement, the Axis would have easily won in spite of the manpower and industrial advantages held by the Allies.

As substitutes for a few of the WWII entries, might I suggest that the following could have been included: (a) The Plains of Abraham in 1759 (Montcalm did not have to leave the safety Quebec's walls - and Quebec's loss led cascaded through North America essentially ending France's colonial presence there), (b) the Falkland Island War of 1982 (perhaps a good companion piece to the First Gulf War, which is basically the same blunder of not understanding how the West would react), and (c) smallpox wiping out Indigenous populations in the Americas and Australia (a blunder because the Europeans didn't know their blankets were infected).

On the other hand, it's hard not to like a book like this, if only as a starting point for discussion. It's basically the history equivalent of, say, the American Film Institute's Top Movies lists or Rolling Stones' Greatest Rock Songs lists. Other reviewers have pointed out minor errors, but generally speaking facts such as dates are irrelevant to Fawcett's points: these are single event mistakes that made some sort of significant change in the course of history, so the interesting part is the relationship between the mistake and the consequence. Another caution is to not expect a great deal of detail on historical context - there simply isn't room in a book like this. Instead, this is a book to read on an airplane, or to leave on the coffee table to pick up once in a while. It's well-written and entertaining, and will give you something to chat about the next time you're in a bar and the subject turns to history (perhaps that doesn't happen too often to you, but it's best to be prepared!).

fine drama

One year has gone by since Lindsay Wright, Cici Burke and Bridget Tindale left Baltimore to relocate and start over on Blackwell Farms in the Shenandoah Valley. The place was a dump, but the three single women worked hard; assisted but at times distracted by their grumpy housekeeper Ida Mae; Cici's 20-year-old daughter Lori who fled a California college to come "home", and fifteen years old Noah Clete.

Now the farm has undergone much renovation and revealed some of its history to its current residents. They know what happened during the Civil War as this farm and its neighbor were home to battles and occupations. It was turned into winery, a cheesy creamery, and a WWII refugee camp. Now Ladybug Farm is home to another generation of misfits.

Using flashbacks to tell the history enhances a warm tale of love and friendship as Donna Ball informs her audience what happened to those and more who spent A YEAR ON LADYBUG'S FARM. The cast is solid as each still struggles with what they want, but have come a long way baby from where they were especially the trio of Maryland expatriates. Fans will enjoy the return visit to the three single women and their three "wards" as fans will feel AT HOME ON LADYBUG FARM.

A great sequel!

Having read "A Year on Ladybug Farm" and loved it, I was delighted to read the sequel - it's just as good (which doesn't always happen, unfortunately). I'd recommend both books to anyone who enjoys a good read and marvelous characters. Hope there will be another Ladybug book soon.

At Home on Ladybug Farm was AMAZING!!!

I love this Ladybug Farm Series! This is the kind of book you do not want to end-you can image yourself as one of the three 50 (something) women, planning their day which comes with many obstacles and challenges. It is so exciting-their adventures, and planning their future (even though they thought they were retiring), and yet so much more to life.

I love the characters and the connections of the three women who are best friends, who gave up their city life to live in the country and tackle the restoration of an historic estate in Virginia. I adore their friendship with gay couple (Derrick and Paul-they are divine) and can image them sitting around drinking wine in the gardens and love their style!

What was very exciting about this #2 installment of the series was adding more from Lori (Cici’s daughter) which grows up and matures during the book, and learning more details about Noah (teen who is helping them out on the farm which they take under their wing), especially Lindsay. She is a mentor to him in so many ways from the art, landscape design, to every aspect of the land and home. I fell in love with his character. Also Ida May (housekeeper) is hiding a lot of stories throughout the book which comes to surface with a little historical fiction from past generations of the lovely historic home and how they seamlessly blend into this new generation.

This book will make you laugh and cry (the animals are funny and all the crazy things which happen, but there is so much love here). Cannot wait to see what is happening in the next book! This sequel is amazing and love Donna Ball’s writing style. I want to savor each moment as love everything about this series from the gourmet cooking, gardening, restoration, entertaining, designing, friendship, to being creative and thinking outside the box.

When you love historic inns, properties, real estate, and bed and breakfast and especially elegant farm inns, you can relate. This is a 5 star +++ series and highly recommend. I have already purchased the e-book #3 (Love Letters from Ladybug Farm).

After reading Donna latest, “The Hummingbird House” (2013), I had to begin reading Ladybug Farm series and I am thorough enjoying it. I can escape with this book and imagine myself in the setting (not sure when I am going to get any work done), as want to lock myself in and enjoy this delightful and charming series!

All about dreams and making them happen – never giving up. An inspiring read which you will not soon forget!

Another Blah Book from Susan Johnson

What can I say other than the plot line of this story is the same as any other recent Susan Johnson. The story started out interesting enough with the heroine using the hero to purposely ruin her reputation. At this point I thought 'Yay! Strong heroine, strong hero there's going to be spark and passion!". Alas, no. The heroine and hero do get married, however Johnson does not develop the relationship of the characters at all. The characters retain the feel of strangers who just happen to be compatible in bed.

Of course once the characters are married, Susan Johnson's repeats her overly used plot line that we've seen in tons of her past stories: hero has lots of sex with heroine, hero thinks he's starting to fall in love with heroine, hero doesn't like the idea of falling in love so leaves and renews a sexual relationship with a former lover, heroine finds she's fallen in love with hero but pines away for him, heroine decides to stop pining and returns to town, heroine catches hero cheating on her, hero feels bad, apologizes, heroine forgives him right away, and they lived happily ever after.

There's no resolution of the hero's infidelity. The heroine simply accepts it. Her character did a complete 180 from the strong willed character I saw in the beginning of the book. Plus there's nothing romantic in one spouse cheating on another.

This book is definitely not a keeper. I'd say check it out from the library if you really want to read it and save your $8 for a different book.

The Hero Kinda Sucks

Just FYI/Spoiler. Ther heroine is typical Susan Johnson, a bit strident and anooying, but mostly good. The realy problem with the story is the hero. He is really young at 22 and maybe that's the excuse for his behavoir. He leave his wife and goes back to his mistress and then gets rid of the mistress and spends a night with his wife then goes back to cheating on her with other women. Yes he sometimes calls the other women by his wife's name, but since the reason for him leaving is never really explains more than being commitment-phobic. He's also an alcoholic who never stops drinking something for every meal. I mean, alcoholism is a serious problem that causes lots of health problems. Also, he never feels guilt that he cheats on his wife or remorse even though she admits it bothers her that he did it. Also he says he loves her at the end of the story, but actions speak louder than words and his actions do not show love and even his wife doesn't think he means it when he says he loves her, but she feels he will mean it "with time". Yeah, it's a bit of a frustrating story so I'd stay away from it if I were you. Oh, and the end is really quick. It goes from him having dinner with a woman he's also sleeping with who runs a house of prostitution and within a few pages he has a complete turnaround because his wife is pregnant and suddenly he wants to be involved. There's no explanation given or closure. He just decided he wants her back after ignoring her and drinking all his meals and sleeping with innumerable women and he comes back and says he loves her and that's the end of it and the story is other. Literally the wrap up is like 5 pages.

Hellishly Disappointing

I loved Susan Johnson's earlier books. Her heroes, rogues all, were romantic and redeemable; her heroines, spirited but likeable. I'm not sure what has happened, but I wish Ms. Johnson's editor would start actually editing. Johnson's latest book, "Sexy As Hell" features a spoiled, narcissistic, alcoholic hero and a grating, possessive heroine who, after reluctantly agreeing to a quick marriage of convenience, turns into a jealous shrew. How her overbearing possessiveness makes her different from all the other women he has seduced and discarded, I don't know. But the most bilious part of this story is when, knowing their marriage is a sham, knowing he doesn't love her, the heroine refuses to remove herself from him when they are having sex (Johnson's couples never make love anymore), despite the fact he is tied to a bedpost, losing control, and has made it clear he doesn't wish to impregnate her. Of course, she becomes pregnant, whereupon he runs back to London and resumes his affair with a former amour who, incidentally, is another bitchy possessive shrew. No wonder the man drinks. Despite this story's requisite happy ending, the hero is never fully redeemable and the heroine is a shallow, petty shadow of Johnson's earlier heroines.

Warning - Not a new Release

This is just a Warning message and doesn't review the story which is excellent. This is one half of the previously released Remember When. The companion volumn, and the other half of the story, is Hot Ice. The full 'Remember When' book is available on kindle for 6.39 so there is no reason to buy half the story for the same price.

So be careful - I'm tempted to just buy anything from Nora Roberts or JD Robb that I haven't heard of before, but her publishers are getting tricky.

Don't buy! Reprint!!

Unfortunately, I had already purchased the ebook before reading these comments...that can't be returned. I'm royally PO'd about this. Nothing in the marketing says that it is a reprint when I pre-ordered this. I use to excuse NR and just blame the publishers and marketing; but this game of misleading consumers has gone on too long for her to be blameless.

Spectacular & Stunning Spy Romance

Annique Villers , the elusive Fox Cub, is the most brilliant, beautiful and dangerous French Spy. Robert Grey, the Head of the British Section, is a ruthless spymaster. One holds the key to the fate of two countries. The other, the will and determination to unlock those secrets. Both are serving two conflicting masters; one of the world and one of the heart.

Let the Game begin.

An utterly romantic and riveting novel set against the backdrop of France and England during the Napoleonic Wars. Its simply astonishing that this is a debut. I have found when reading some supposedly 'spy' romance books, much of what is the actual daily *life* of a spy is not included. This ENTIRE book is just that -what they do, how they survive and accomplish their mission. This is not ballroom and parlor espionage. Rather its treacherous field operations with weapons, disguise and cunning. The book is full of rich historical detail which completely absorbs the reader. I actually felt like a voyeur, right there in every scene. There wasn't too much nor too little, just enough to keep me hooked. Bourne (author) has an uncanny ability to make even the mundane fascinating. Her characters are full bodied and well defined. And most importantly they DON'T compromise their own beliefs, which makes this novel even more astonishing. How exactly are two enemies going to end up together? Well you'll just have to read it to find that out!

I really think that this book defines what a 'spy' romance should be. If your going to write about spies then please WRITE about spies! Show me what they do and how they do it and I think this book more than does that.

Excellent. Highly Recommended.

Edit- apparently this is technically not a debut. Bourne wrote 'Her Ladyship's Companion' (1983) as well. Unfortunately it is not currently available. The hero is Giles, the young nephew of one of the secondary characters in TSL.

Loved this fast-paced romantic spy story set during the Napoleonic era

The SpyMaster's Lady is one of the best books - if not the best book - I have read (amongst a host of good books) in years. It's a fast-paced Napoleonic-era spy love story that is utterly compelling, deeply romantic and very witty. The hero Gray is super-smart, tough, honourable and kind. You could say the same thing for the heroine Annique but her toughness is edged with vulnerability. She has a wry philosophical sense of humour that made me laugh out loud many times. The spy subplot is clever and completely believable and I since reading The SpyMaster's Lady, I have a very hard time accepting that No. 7 Meek Street was NOT the precursor to MI6. The romance is both sexy and heartfelt and left me with that happy feeling that all is well in the world. This book is definitely a keeper! The rest of the books in the series are also excellent.

Eloquent, elegant, simply delicious prose! I was sucked into the book on the first page, and found myself reading all night. I could not put it down. Ms Bourne's writing style is reminiscent of Laura Kinsale's best novels, yet uniquely her own. The characters's 'voices' whether dialogue or internal, vibrate with realism, beauty, and intelligent wit. I found myself enchanted by the love scenes, gasping at some of the action, and sighing with satisfaction when it came to an end. The surprises and twists are endless and believable. I immediately purchased two more, and have greedily devoured them in only a few days. So I bought the rest of the series. I hope all her series are this intriguing and amazing, and I know I will not be disappointed.
