The American Plague: The Untold Story of Yellow Fever, The Epidemic That Shaped Our History, by Molly Caldwell Crosby

In this national-bestselling account, a journalist traces the course of yellow fever, stopping in 1878 Memphis to "vividly [evoke] the Faulkner-meets-'Dawn of the Dead' horrors,"*-and moving on to today's strain of the killer virus.

Over the course of history, yellow fever has paralyzed governments, halted commerce, quarantined cities, moved the U.S. capital, and altered the outcome of wars. During a single summer in Memphis alone, it cost more lives than the Chicago fire, the San Francisco earthquake, and the Johnstown flood combined.

In 1900, the U.S. sent three doctors to Cuba to discover how yellow fever was spread. There, they launched one of history's most controversial human studies. Compelling and terrifying, The American Plague depicts the story of yellow fever and its reign in this country-and in Africa, where even today it strikes thousands every year. With "arresting tales of heroism,"** it is a story as much about the nature of human beings as it is about the nature of disease.

From Publishers Weekly
In a summer of panic and death in 1878, more than half the population of Memphis, Tenn., fled the raging yellow fever epidemic, which finally waned when cooler weather set in. The disease had been transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which came in swarms on ships from the Caribbean or West Africa. This account has a narrower scope than James Dickerson's recent Yellow Fever, focusing on the Memphis tragedy, but journalist Crosby offers a forceful narrative of a disease's ravages and the quest to find its cause and cure. Crosby is particularly good at evoking the horrific conditions in Memphis, "a city of corpses" and rife with illness characterized by high fever, black vomit and hemorrhaging, treated by primitive methods. Crosby also relates arresting tales of heroism, such as how two nuns returned to the quarantined city from a vacation to nurse the victims. The author profiles scientists, some of whom died in their fight to identify the cause of this deadly disease. She also describes more recent outbreaks in Africa: yellow fever is making a frightening comeback despite the existence of a vaccine. Photos. Barnes & Noble Discover New Writers selection. (Nov. 7)

Review
"Engrossing...Crosby, a journalist, profiles the outbreak as it rips through Memphis, the city hardest hit.  A first-rate medical detective drama...It is good to be reminded of the occasional nobility of the human spirit." - New York Times Book Review

"Gripping...highly readable." - Newsweek

"...painstaking investigation is important not just for the sweep of detail but for getting things impeccably right.  Whether Crosby is writing about...Memphis, the death of a family in a plantation house in Mississippi or the itinerary of Walter Reed in Havana, she provides meticulous documentation to back up the narrative." - The Commercial Appeal, Memphis

"Through vivid prose and classic storytelling, Crosby seamlessly blends history and science to tell us how yellow fever haunted the nation--and why, if we're not extremely vigilant, it will haunt us again." - Hampton Sides, author of Hellhound on His Trail and Ghost Soldiers

"In her masterful debut, Molly Caldwell Crosby uses rich detail and a stunning cast of characters to bring to vivid life the devastating yellow fever epidemic of 1878...this book captivated me from the first line--and it haunted me long after I'd turned the final page." - Candice Millard, author of Destiny of the Republic and The River of Doubt

From the Author
I am not from Memphis originally, and after moving here, I began hearing about the tragic yellow fever epidemic and its far reaching consequences.  As a non-Memphian, I was struck by how few people outside of this region had ever heard of the epidemic, which was the greatest urban disaster of its time, with a death toll higher than the Chicago fire and San Francisco earthquake--combined.  That is what inspired me to tell this story.    I wanted to take the reader into Memphis in 1878, into the city's problems and promise as summer approaches.  While most U.S. cities in both the North and the South suffered through yellow fever outbreaks for two-hundred years, 1878 stands out as the worst--when Memphis became a "city of corpses"--and the last major yellow fever epidemic in the U.S.   Out of the despair of that epidemic came action from the federal government to finally find the cause of these debilitating outbreaks.  It was twenty years in the making, and it led to one of our greatest successes in medical history--Walter Reed's work in Cuba that finally proved mosquitoes, not "miasma" or filth, brought on a yellow fever season.  In the end, his work led to later development of a vaccine--the same one still in use today.  But, like the work of countless doctors and nurses in Memphis, it came at a great price.  It has been said that no other disease killed so many of the doctors, nurses and scientists trying to study it.  That is what struck me most when writing the book and still stays with me today--the many people, ordinary citizens and doctors alike, in Memphis, Cuba and elsewhere, who literally gave their lives in the fight against this disease.

Mosquitoes, Fever, and America
By Gordon M. Verber
Over three generations ago Hans Zinsser wrote "Rats, Lice and History" telling the story of lice and men (sorry) and the typhus Rickettsia.

He founded the literary genre marked by the examination of disease, history, and having tripartite titles; Recent examples: Guns, Germs, and Steel; Viruses, Plagues, and History.

Though Ms. Crosby did not call her book "Mosquitoes, Fever, and America," "The American Plague" nicely continues the tradition of this fascinating venue.

The subtitle (why must books so often have subtitles now?) claims this to be "The Untold Story of Yellow Fever, The Epidemic That Shaped Our History", which is more than a bit of a reach - Especially, given the existence of the very similarly themed and titled adolescent's book "An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793" (2003) by Jim Murphy (which, whatever your age, is also worth reading).

It is arguable that the subtitle means only to refer to the Memphis outbreak, but that single event did not "shape our history," it was the repeated outbreaks of Yellow Jack beginning with those in the northeast ports in 1699 that truly did change the history of all of North America. The subtitle is simply annoying marketing hyperbole - though such an unfounded, untrue, claim did nearly make me put the book back on the shelf unopened. Which would have been a shame, as I enjoyed the book greatly.

"(The) American Plague" details the impact of an outbreak of Yellow Fever (YF) in Memphis, Tennessee (the author's home) in the year 1878, and follows with an in-depth examination of the subsequent discovery of the means of transmission, prevention, vaccination, cause, and sad lack of cure for the disease.

This book also traces the origin of the disease, and reviews how it likely came to the Americas from its home in Africa as a consequence of the slave trade. The occurrence of YF epidemics in Europe (perhaps even dating back to the mid 500's) is not discussed, which is forgivable given the focus of the book, though the fact that 300,000 people perished from YF in Spain in the 1800's makes it clear that YF was (is) a scourge far beyond America's shores.

The author brings to life the horror and uncertainly of epidemic disease at the dawn of scientific medicine. She recounts the difficulty of seeing the true nature of a disease though the conflicting overlay of current knowledge and cultural belief (a current example: autism).

Further, she points to the mendacity of businessmen who may have, in their efforts to prevent disruption of commerce by quarantine, allowed this outbreak to spread from New Orleans to Memphis in the first place. She briefly touches on the ethics of human, of animal, and of self, experimentation. It is not a simple book, though it is clearly, if at times unevenly, written.

Unlike most popular science books, she includes an extensive source bibliography that points to precisely where her material has come from. This is a very welcome addition. Over all, this is a solidly written, well researched and interesting book. I strongly recommend it.

I also strongly recommend that you consider that the World Health Organization estimates that YF still kills 30,000 people a year. Most of these deaths could be prevented by vaccination and by mosquito control. Over the past few years Yellow Jack has been re-emerging and spreading in the western hemisphere. This spread is, as Ms. Crosby shows that to a degree the Memphis epidemic was, a political failure marked by primacy of business interests and of underfunded and inadequate public health measures.

Pray that it does not return to America.

A cautinary, touching tale of a terrible time in our history.
By Pat Morgan
Well written, exceptionally well-researched, timely, and a much-needed warning that we must never let our guard down when it comes to mosquito-borne diseases. Her description of the yellow fever plague in Memphis was especially touching.

Intriguing yet dry towards the end.
By P. cook
A fascinating glimpsed into 20th century medicine and the struggles both society and practitioners faced. Excellent historical account if one of the worst diseases we have challenged and will challenge again.

Jesse Stone trades quips with his deputies, Suitcase Simpson and Molly Crane; struggles with his relationship with his ex-wife, Jenn; and grapples with a criminal's return in bestseller Parker's sizzling seventh novel to feature the Paradise, Mass., police chief (after 2007's High Profile). Ex-con Wilson Crow Cromartie, who claims to be Apache and who eluded the police after a shootout 10 years earlier in Trouble in Paradise (1998), wants Stone not to interfere in his search for someone in Massachusetts. A Florida mob bigwig, Louis Francisco, has hired Crow to kill his ex-wife and kidnap his 14-year-old daughter, Amber, but Crow has a policy of not harming women. In the end, Stone does more than leave Crow alone; he decides to make sure Amber, who's involved with a Latino gang, gets a chance, however slim, to overcome the odds stacked against her. Stone and Crow make an appealing odd couple as they first warily size each other up then become grudging allies in the pursuit of justice. (Feb.)

Unusual Jesse Stone Novel
By C. Baker
This is definitely one of the oddest Jesse Stone novels that Robert Parker has written. In Stranger In Paradise, Stone is confronted by William "Crow" Cromartie who has come to town to bring the daughter of Miami gangster back to her father. The catch is, Crow has been instructed to kill the girl's mother and he doesn't kill women. Instead he solicits Stone to stay out of his way while he protects the girl and takes care of the other bad guys. Catch number two is, last time Crow was seen in Paradise he was speeding off with 10 million dollars leaving behind a string of bodies. Needless to say Jesse gets caught up in the matter and he and Crow become uneasy allies. Jen, Jesse's ex-wife is very much in this novel, are Molly Crane and Suitcase Simpson. And they all act oddly.

This novel was certainly entertaining and the situation rather messy. It wasn't one of my favorites though.

A Delight, superb hero and heroine
By Melissa
From the very beginning I knew I was going to like The Accidental Wedding because I loved the characters. The heroine, the hero and the secondary characters are vibrant with distinctive memorable personalities.

Nash Renfrew is a successful diplomat who returns to England from St. Petersburg to check on an estate he has inherited from his uncle. He also wants to find a wife who will be in all ways a suitable mate for him in his diplomatic career. On his way to view his new holdings he is thrown from his horse and awakens in a small cottage with no memory.

Maddy is a single woman raising her five younger brothers and sisters and she is an absolutely lovely heroine. She is resourceful, hard working, and so very kind. She rescues an unconscious Nash and nurses him back to health. Even while this man is unconscious there are some very memorable moments because Maddy is so determined to save this stranger.

Upon awakening Nash is surprised at his surroundings and quite taken with Maddy. Over the next few days he remembers only bits of his past and these memories are usually recalled when Nash observes the wonderful family atmosphere in the cottage, he never experienced these intimate cozy times in his own home as a child. He is amazed how much Maddy has sacrificed for her siblings and she is not bitter nor unloving but rather sweet and comforting to her half brothers and sisters. Her siblings are wonderful in this book. Each has a distinctive personality and they all are fascinated with Nash.

Nash is protective toward Maddy and her family especially since someone is harassing them at night and Maddy is being pressured to pay higher rents. He wants to help in any way he can and when Nash recovers his memory, he keeps this information from Maddy so he can stand guard over her family.

Maddy and Nash have a beautiful romance mostly because they do not let pride get in the way of their feelings. Nash can recognize when he is in the wrong and is a quick repenter. Maddy is ever practical and she does not allow others to influence her pragmatic nature. I loved how she stood up to Nash's family. She is also confident and not afraid to let others know she is more than a country miss.

Lastly Ms. Gracie paints some beautiful pictures with her words. The cheery moments in the cottage were very easy to visualize. The bee scenes (Maddy is a beekeeper) were richly detailed along with this couple's feelings and inner dialogue. This is a terrific romantic tale.

love love love
By robyn enlund
What a wonderful read this was. The hero, Nash is charming, delicious and wonderfully clueless about the fact he's falling in love, the heroine, Maddy is courageous and determined to save herself. Gracie builds a wonderful intimate world in Maddy's cottage and inhabits it with fully formed characters that jump from the page. Beautiful historical details and a love story that brought tears to my eyes - all with the usual Gracie witt and verve. If you haven't read Anne Gracie before, do yourself a favour.
Straight to the keepers shelf (after a very late night reading).

The Accidental Wedding by Anne Gracie
Historical Romance- Oct. 5th, 2010
4 ½ stars

Anne Gracie brings to life another wonderful Regency that is part of her Devil Riders series. I instantly came to love the indomitable and pure heart of the heroine and the dashing hero who comes to save her

Maddy's loves her half brothers and sisters. She has finally found a home in a tiny run down cottage owned by the lately deceased Sir Jasper Brownrigg. They may not be rich but the locals respect her and her new found family makes her happier than she can remember. But this bucolic life is disturbed by the estate manager Mr. Harris who demands she pay an exorbitant rent or he will kick her out and a mysterious and scary `ghost' that haunts them at night. When a dashing stranger suffers a head injury when his horse throws him Maddy's tough life is made more difficult. But she refuses to let this handsome stranger die. However, even having an unconscious man in her cottage when she is unmarried could ruin her reputation. To complicate matters further, when the man awakens he suffers from amnesia! On his road to recovery Maddy can't help but be charmed by his manners and kind patience to her brothers and sisters. But what will happen when the obviously wealthy gentleman remembers who he is...

This book was a pure pleasure to read! Maddy's gentle heart and sweet goodness carry the story. She is a heroine that anyone will easily admire. The author's writing is masterful. This caring and tender story captured my attention and never let it go. The charming brothers and sisters make for mischievous and delightful reading. I enjoyed how much they all loved and supported each other even if they were poor and often in difficult circumstances. The heroine's spirit, courage and willingness to sacrifice for those she loved were heartwarming. Nash was a charming rogue and the moments with him and the children who adopted him are sweet and poignant. The only quibble I would have about this book was how much Nash fought against acknowledging his love for Maddy. Because Maddy suffered so much I wanted him to be her knight in shining armor immediately. I was very impatient with his stubbornness.

Heartfelt and charming this is a wonderful book to warm your heart.

From Publishers Weekly
The reliable Francis ( Straight ) delivers again, this time in a thriller featuring young author John Kendall. Kendall writes survival manuals for an adventure-travel agency, but has taken time off to pen a novel. When money runs thin, he agrees to write the biography of famed horse trainer Tremayne Vickers. Leaving London for Vickers's Berkshire home, Kendall arrives as one of Vickers's two principal riders is acquitted of murdering a young woman with whom he'd quarreled. However, members of Vickers's entourage, including sons Gareth and Perkin and Perkin's wife, Mackie, suggest the hot-tempered jockey had some part in the death. Kendall fits easily into the household, conducting research, taking notes, even cooking and working horses; then the body of a missing stablegirl is found in the woods. As Kendall's research continues, his riding skills improve and he is taken into Vickers's confidence, the intrepid writer finds himself under attack. Horses, danger, betrayal and doing the right thing--expected components of a vintage Francis yarn--permeate a plot presented with authority and verve. Paperback rights to Fawcett.

Another winner by Francis
By Jeanne Tassotto
This 1990 novel by former jockey Dick Francis features John Kendall, a young man who has written a novel while working as an adventure guide writer. When his novel was accepted by a publisher Kendall took his advance, quit his job and began his second novel. As the story opens he has discovered two things, the first is that writing full time was not as easy as he had thought, and secondly that his advance was not lasting nearly as long as he had hoped. An opportunity to ghost write a horse trainer's memoirs came up, complete with room and board just as Kendall found himself homeless.

While living in the trainer's home Kendall is introduced to the world of racing and some of its intrigues and scandals. As always in a Francis' novel, the hero is stoic and persisent, the family is dysfunctional, the first crime leads to a second, and in the end it is the villian's lack of character that caused all the misfortune.

Francis' work has been criticized as being formulistic, that any one is very like any other. This is true but since they are well written, the characters are interesting, the plots are clever, and the action exciting this means only that the reader is guaranteed an enjoyable read with each new one.

Branaugh Brings Book To Life

I enjoyed this book enormously when I first read it and bought the audio version just for fun. Kenneth Branaugh really made this book a treat to listen to - fantastic voices and range without over doing it. Dick Francis fans - anyone really - will be thoroughly entertained with Longshot.

A classical murder narrative unfolds...
By Semioticghost
"Longshot" centres on events in an old racing family, observed through the eyes of a writer of survival handbooks who has been invited to work on the biography of the patriarch, a successful trainer of racing horses. For the first time in a a few of its ilk, this novel left me wanting to hear more about how the characters went on to live their lives, partly because the resolution left some interesting tensions to work with. Due to the nature of the plot, Francis's characterisations go into more depth than he normally offers, and I wish he'd added another volume.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Thomas (The Lone Texan) sets her latest trilogy in a town founded by three families who are also bitter rivals: McAllen, Matheson, and Truman. Nothing much happens in Harmony, Tex., except on Saturday nights, when the town sheriff is brawling at the local bar. Unhappy teen Reagan worked in a nursing home and loved listening to old Beverly Truman's stories about Harmony. After Beverly's death, Reagan steals her last name and runs away to Beverly's hometown. Jeremiah Truman, Beverly's brother, quickly figures out that Reagan isn't actually a long-lost relative but lets her stay with him anyway. Meanwhile, sheriff Alexandra McAllen tangles with fire chief Hank Matheson, who keeps rescuing her from her Saturday night sprees. The characters are delightful, and a subplot about mysterious fires balances the sweet stories about being and becoming family. (June)

From Booklist
When young Reagan rides into Harmony, Texas, in the back of a pickup truck, she's in search of that elusive quality called “home,” and prepared with enough background on the small town's inhabitants and history to pass as one of the founding family's descendants. Grateful for irascible old Jeremiah Truman's unquestioning acceptance, she settles quickly into the rhythm of school and chores, but remains standoffish even when junior rodeo champion Noah McAllen tries to befriend her. Noah's older sister Alex is the town sheriff, and more than sexual sparks are flying between Alex and longtime family friend and volunteer fire chief Hank Matheson. Someone is setting fires around town, and with the long drought, vast expanses of natural grasslands, and summer heat, the danger quotient rapidly escalates. Thomas' newest character-driven romantic contemporary novel is set within the Texas ranching culture, a richly articulated, historically significant area complete with three feuding families and the junior rodeo circuit for added local color. This tale also introduces a trilogy fraught with interpersonal conflict and a suspenseful arson subplot. --Lynne Welch

Get ready to be whisked away to the wonderful town of Harmony
By Crystal Fulcher
I was so thrilled to pick this up on Sunday to read. I wasn't feeling very well (stomach-bug) and wanted something to enjoy reading, something that would transport me away from how I felt. Welcome to Harmony did just that. I left my quiet bedroom (the kids and husband were gone) and was transported to the town of Harmony. I got to know the inhabitants of Harmony and felt their joys and pain. Their hopes and fears. I was completely absorbed into the lives of the people of Harmony and the events that unfolded in the book.

I'll start with the plot - it was a great set up for the series in this first book, but the book had a plot of it's own too. Sometimes there is too much of one or the other in a first book in the series, but Ms. Thomas has found a wonderful blend. There was enough background to absorb you as well as a plot line to keep this story moving (and you anxious for the next book in the series). I won't give anything away, but it can be a nail-biter at times. Lots of things go on in the book, but it's not too much to keep up with - it's just right to keep you enthralled and wanting to read more.

As for the characters - there are a lot you get to know in this book, but most of them stand out well on their own. Reagan is the catalyst for the story. She shows up in town and claims to be Jeremiah's niece. Jeremiah is that perfect grumpy old man and I loved him as a character. There is also Noah who befriends Reagan when others seem unsure of her. And the main characters of this story, sheriff Alex and fire chief Hank Matheson. Through these main characters and a few others who I hope will have stories of their own, you learn about the town and the characters. The characters are well-written and varied and really make the story.

I highly recommend you pick up this story if you enjoy relationship and character-driven novels with some romance. It all blends together so well to make a perfect story. It 's a perfect summer read.

Jodi Thomas at her best
By P. Poynor
Jodi Thomas never fails to enthrall me in her unforgetable stories. This is one of her best. I was hooked from the first page! I can hardly wait to read the next enstallment...Somewhere Along the Way. The characaters in Welcome to Harmony came alive for me. (I did wonder about 4-year-old Saralynn talking so well. Perhaps being raised in a house full of adults contributes to her ability.) I'm hoping the next book will further the relationship between Tyler and Katherine and Reagan and Noah. Something to look forward to.

Others have discussed the plot, so I won't waste your time. If you like stories about modern day Texas and small towns with believable characters, you'll enjoy this book.

From Publishers Weekly
The 14th Doc Ford Florida thriller (after 2006's Dark Light) from bestseller White requires more suspension of disbelief than most readers may be willing to provide. Marine biologist Ford, a shadowy figure with multiple links to the intelligence community, gets an unusual commission from Kal Wilson, a former one-term president who recently lost his wife in a mysterious plane crash. Wilson, who has a terminal illness, asks Ford's help in slipping his protective detail so that the politician can search for those he believes responsible for his wife's death. Implausibly, the psychotic serial killer who's Ford's bête noir, Praxcedes Lourdes, appears to have been involved in the attack on the former first lady, giving the covert op a personal incentive to assist Wilson. The action sequences, especially those involving Wilson, are less than convincing, and the climax is particularly far-fetched. (Mar.)

From Booklist
White's last entry in his Doc Ford series (Dark Light, was a quasi-historical novel in which his hero, marine biologist and special-ops agent Ford, unraveled a mystery with roots in World War II. This time, though, it's back to the present, as Ford tangles with his nemesis from Tampa Burn (2004), the psychotic pyromaniac Lourdes. There's more than mano a mano going on here, though, as Lourdes is working with a group of Islamic terrorists who have a global agenda. And Ford has a new partner, too: Kal Wilson, a Clintonesque former president of the U.S., now stricken with a fatal illness, who needs Ford's help with a few clandestine items on his to-do-before-I-die list. It's a bit of an outlandish premise, to be sure, but White makes it work, drawing the former prexy into Ford's world as easily and believably as if he were just another hanger-on at Dinkins Bay Marina. There's not much kicking back, Margaritaville-style, on the agenda, however, as the lethal mix of pyro psychos, wacko right-wing Americans, and global terrorists keeps Ford on high-adrenaline full throttle from beginning to end. Yes, we'd like a bit more of the reflective character interplay that usually peppers the action in this series, but White does pure action as well as anybody in the genre, so why not just enjoy the ride? Glad I read, despite some of the reviews I had read.

Well, I really debated with myself before getting this book due to some of the reviews I read, but I'm glad I got it, as I enjoyed the story. Yes, it was outside of the marina and some of the regulars, but you need to have a change of pace sometimes when writing/reading series books. I enjoyed it and plan on reading more Doc Ford books.

About the Author
A former science geek, Susan Kay Law turned to romancewriting as a career because it was the perfect excuse to avoid housework and continue spending all her time doing what she really loved: reading and daydreaming. Also because she was really bad at sitting in a swamp at 5 A.M. in forty-degree weather and tracking bird behavior.

Winner of the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart Award and a Waldenbooks Bestseller award, twice nominated for a RITA Award, she confesses that the biggest surprise of her career was when this small town Midwestern preacher's kid was named to New Woman magazine's list of "the steamiest writers of women's fiction." Her greatest joy, however, is spending her days thoroughly outnumbered by four of the best males on the planet -- her husband and three sons. She currently lives in Minnesota, and plans to be a ski bum in her next life.

Another great women's fiction novel from Law
By Joanest
Susan Kay Law's latest novel, The Paper Marriage, is for anyone who understands John Lennon's words, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

Sometimes you swing for a fast ball and totally miss the change up when it arrives. Tom Nash, the former Twins pitcher, understands that. Ann McCrary doesn't. The fast ball she aimed for was a long-term marriage and children with her childhood sweetheart, sharing a home and the architectural firm they started together. The change up was the auto accident that left her husband in a coma.

At least in the batter's box either you're out or you immediately get ready for the next pitch. In Ann's case it has been twelve years since that fateful changeup, twelve years of faithfulness to a man who doesn't know she's there. Twelve years until Tom Nash moves in next door, followed by his teenage Goth daughter Mer. In spite of the blown shoulder that ended his baseball career, he delivers another change up to Ann.

Mer, raised by her gold-digging baseball groupie mother, comes from Chicago for the summer to live with the father she barely knows. Tom is clueless on how to make up for everything he missed in his daughter's life and how to accept her for who she is.

It's the people and canines in Ann's life - her aging hippy mother; her in-laws, the perfect couple until Martin finally decides he wants to live again and Mary, so faithful to her son, has to find a new life for herself; her dog, Cleo, and Cooper the mutt next door (and the puppies); her neighbors; the denizens of the nursing home; and especially Mer and Tom --who finally convince her she can move on, that she can maintain her loyalty to her husband and find a life of her own at the same time.

The Paper Marriage tells a story we can all identify with, full of intriguing characters who live their lives in spite of the change ups.

deep contemporary relationship drama
By A Customer
Twelve years ago, John McCrary was in a nasty car accident that left him comatose. His wife Ann had him placed in Cedar Ridge where he has lived ever since in a deep coma. Ann believes not only has John's life been placed on pause so has hers; still she and her therapy dog Cleo visit her husband every evening at 6:30 to insure he receives proper care at the nursing home although her mother-in-law Mary is there diligently everyday as she expects a miracle to occur as well as her daughter-in-law standing by her vow of in sickness, etc.

When Ann's neighbor Mrs. Hillerman moved into assisted living, her house was sold within a day to former baseball star Tom Nash. He moves in almost immediately accompanied by his angry purple haired sixteen years old daughter Mer who will spend the summer with him in the burbs. He is clueless about life in the suburban jungle and what to do with a teen girl, whose self-absorbed mother like the former All Star pitcher neglected her. As Tom and Ann become acquainted starting with brownies and perversions and coaxed by Mer, they fall in love. However, in spite of encouragement from her mom and discouragement from John's mother, Ann takes her vows to her husband seriously.

THE PAPER MARRIAGE is a deep contemporary relationship drama that focuses on complex personal issues. The story line contains an obvious serious undertone re when does a person move on in his or her life without neglecting or forgetting an incapacitated loved one. With some humor to lighten the mood a bit, readers will appreciate The Paper Marriage with tears glistening throughout this powerful tale. There is a final spin between Tom and John that will leave no one dry eyed.

And they say "Don't judge a book by its cover"...
By A. Patel
I worked at Barnes & Noble and kept passing this book on the shelve, thinking "I need to pick that up and see what it's all about". Well, wow! The characters are compelling, the scenery all to easy to imagine and the romance between Ann and Tom is slow-building and that much sweeter because of it. Pick it up...read it...love it like I do.
