For vampire Glory St. Clare weight loss has never been an option, since vampires go through all eternity with the exact same body they had on the day they were changed. Work-out, starve yourself, get a tattoo, a piercing - doesn't matter - one night of healing sleep and you're back to the exact body you started with.

Four hundred years ago, when her on-again/off-again boyfriend Jeremiah (Blade) Campbell III turned her vampire, Glory's voluptuous body was ideal for that time - fast forward to the 21st century and now she's slightly cubby. And that's bad enough when you are running a vintage dress shop in Austin, Texas, but in Hollywood Glory can't help but feel self-conscious of her size twelve body in a size zero world.

Newly turned vampire, rock star Israel Caine (Ray to his friends), was literally dumped on Glory's doorstep and she became his mentor, teaching him how to survive his new `life'. Soon the tabloids link Ray and Glory together and to defuse the gossip they pretend to be engaged. Ray has been nominated for a Grammy award and Glory accompanies him to Hollywood to walk the red carpet at his side. Of course, the tabloids are having a field day making fun of Ray's fat fiancée.

Enjoying the active Hollywood nightlife, Glory learns of a new weight loss drug for vampires. In spite of the astronomical expense, she starts taking the drug. The very first night, Glory wakes before sunset and, if not for the intervention of her body guard, she would have fried in the sun's rays. Unfortunately, there are even more potentially fatal side effects.

Blade insists Glory stop taking the drug because its inventor is a MacDonald and the MacDonalds and Campbells have been feuding for centuries. Blade is certain Glory is being used as a tool in the MacDonald/Campbell feud.

But, the pounds are coming off and the Grammy's are just a few days away...

Will Ray win the Grammy? Will the feud between the Campbells and MacDonalds finally erupt in the war to end all wars? Will Glory live long enough to find out?

Don't Diet or Hate Their Thighs? Which is It?

I've enjoyed this series for the most part. Glory is an interesting woman, aside from being a vampire. She has the same sort of troubles the average American woman has - romantic problems, money problems, career problems. The ususal.

Having said that, I was disappointed with this book. There is the obvious: why do we have to have a diet book? Real Vampires Don't Diet! Aside from that, I didn't think the characters felt "real" the way they have in the past. I just didn't buy Glory's willingness to do "anything it took" to be thin. I can see other women doing that, but it didn't feel like Glory to me.

On the other hand, the family feud subplot was interesting and I will be interested in seeing how that plays out in future books.

If you're already a Glory fan, you might as well pick this up. If you're new to the series, begin at the beginning!

Lighthearted urban fantasy

In Hollywood Glory St. Clair loves the nightlife especially hitting the bloody in spots with boyfriend, Jeremy Blade aka Jeremiah Campbell. When she meets Ian MacDonald, he swears he can help her meet her forever fantasy goal of losing weight. Being a vampire she assumes she cannot change her body type, but his diet works.

However, Jeremiah's clan has been blood feuding with the MacDonald brood for eternity. Glory has side affects from her diet like suffering nightmares that are even more shocking as she has not had a dream in four centuries. She protects Ian from Jeremiah and his kin as the loss of weight makes him her hero. Besides he is also working on another drug solution to enable vampires to remain awake in daytime.

Still obsessed over her waistline, Glory rejects the notion that Real Vampires Don't Diet when she accepts help from a MacDonald, which angers her boyfriend's clan as the feud has been on going for centuries. Lighthearted with an underlying message to diet healthily, fans of the series will enjoy this pleasant read as the lead character tries pharmaceuticals to lose the weight.

Fans of Robin Cook's many thrillers will be happy to know another one is on the way. In this latest outing, Invasion, Cook envisions a contact with extraterrestials that is closer to Alien than to E.T.. A gigantic spaceship arrives in the stratosphere to dump some black disks onto Earth. Touch these things at your own risk, however; unsuspecting souls who handle the disks receive a sting, soon followed by flulike symptoms and ending in a kind of zombie assimilation into the alien consciousness. And make no mistake: these aliens are up to no good--we know this because the victims of the UFO-flu are soon transformed into hideous reptilian creatures.

Apparently, one consequence of being trapped by the aliens is that victims lose all semblance of natural speech--most notably, contractions. The book abounds in dialogue such as, "You must flee, Cassy," and "The electrical grid has been interrupted. There will be no force counteracting the antigravity ..." Still, readers looking for a good beach or bathtub book will find Invasion is right on the money.

There are certain similarities between science fiction and medical thrillers (futuristic technology, nature subverted) so it's not really surprising that a master of the medical genre like Cook (Acceptable Risk) would try to combine the two. Unfortunately, the result doesn't succeed as SF and doesn't live up to his usual standards as a medical thriller. Instead, this book reads like a script for the soon-to-be-released NBC "major television event" based on this book?you can almost hear the director yelling "Cut and print" at the end of each chapter. The story starts well enough, with a small college town and a flurry of unusual black rocks. Those who pick them up are stung and, after a short fever, come up with a curious list of aftereffects. They become extroverted, environmentally conscious, attached to dogs?and telepathically connected. As a group of those who haven't been stung rush to find some sort of cure, the leader of the changed begins to take on alien form, while directing the construction of a space ship. By this point, though, Cook doesn't seem to know how to get out of his plot, except for an esoteric cure involving the common cold. One can only hope that aided by special effects, this lame resolution plays better on the small screen than it does in the novel.

Cook fans will revel in this story and find their enthusiasm realized in an April TV dramatization--which explains why hardcover best-seller scribe Cook is here originally published in mass-market paperback: apparently, the theory is that interest in one will feed interest in the other. thrilling

Wait -- don't pick up that shiny black rock. This thriller is more of a science fiction alien invasion story than a medical thriller, involving a worldwide takeover from outer space. The aliens are out to change mankind, perhaps for the better (?). But nevertheless, the human instinct is to resist the invasion -- that is, those few remaining uninfected humans. Are there enough left to save humanity? Comparing this book with other outer space takeover attempts (Michael Crichton's Prey comes to mind), I would say this one is a winner. I found it captivating, easy to read, and a page turner I couldn't put down.

Engrossing Medical Sci-fi

In "Invasion", Robin Cook leaves the earthly realm of disease to pose the idea of the ultimate invader: a disease that originates from outer space. Cook's usual cast of heroes and villains battle each other physically and philosophically; interestingly enough, the 'villains' are trying to clean up earth's environment, which lends a nice ambiguity to half the book. I also enjoyed the fact that Beau, the first character to be 'invaded', never completely loses himself or his love for his girlfriend Cassie, no matter what other changes he goes through. Despite the death and destruction the infected wreak on the heroes, the lead characters, I felt, were more deeply drawn than in many of Cook's novels. There are cliches and obvious plot points, but the story is still gripping and intriguing. Could use a sequel, as Cook leaves the door open for future 'invaders'.

Brilliant Robin Cook (a former doctor and now a professianal writer) uses his previous medical experience to skillfuly craft together such a remarkable piece of work.
When a series of mysterious power outages begin to accur, many people begin to catch the flu, only to recover hours later with the only side effect being bizarre personality changes.However a group of young college students suspect that the orgin of the illness may be caused by something extra-normal.
Containing multiple unexpected plot twists, and a well thought-out story, Robin Cook gives new life to the term "alien invasion." The story simply pulls you into a bold world, and with each page turn having you wondering about what would happen next.
While this book is an excellent thriller to read, there were some noticable prombelms. Such as, Cook's tendency to use a large medical-related vocabulary. This made it hard to understand the science supporting the book's science fiction.
However, It was otherwise a well written novel.

Fun mystery for cat & book lovers

This cozy mystery has an irresistibly attractive cover, and I'm happy to report that the story inside more than measures up to it! I liked the characters, including the good-natured, compassionate librarian Charlie Harris, the delightful small-town Southern setting, the way all the supporting characters were so well portrayed, and the clever whodunit plot. Most of all, I loved Diesel, Charlie's friendly Maine coon cat, who loves attention, walks on a leash, and chirps and warbles rather than meowing. A fun read for anyone who loves mysteries, cats and books.

This is a brand new series featuring Diesel, a Maine coon cat rescued by Charlie Harris, the kindly librarian, who takes Diesel almost everywhere he goes in a halter with a leash. Maine coon cats are huge, they can weigh as much as 25 pounds and it is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, specifically native to the state of Maine, where it is the official State Cat. They are known for their intelligence and gentle personalities.

Diesel and his owner reside in Athena, Mississippi where Charlie, who has recently lost his wife to cancer returns to his hometown to live in a home left to him by his aunt. He works in the Archive Department of the college library and Diesel is well known at the library but stays pretty close to Charlie. Charlie also rents out rooms in his home to college students just as his aunt did. Diesel has a unique trait, in that he knows when people around him need a paw, a head bump or a cuddle, and is especially close to Justin, a freshman at the college who is rooming with Charlie.

Charlie is immersed in his work when he learns that famous author and former classmate, Godfrey Priest, is returning to Athena to promote his current book and take care of some personal business. Charlie remembers his classmate as an arrogant jerk would thought he was better than anyone else and there are quite a few people who agree with that assessment. His homecoming is very eventful, by lunch he had put one man in the hospital, turned some of the town's residents lives upside down, and by dinner he is found dead in his hotel room.

Charlie finds himself pawing through all the information he can find to determine who killed a man not very many people liked, most of whom are his friends and co-workers. It is quite a "purr-plexing" mystery.

I LOVED IT!!!!!

This book had me from page one, I fell in love with this cat and the rest of the story very quickly. I was at a high school basketball tournament and couldn't put it down. Charlie and Diesel make a formidable detective team in their purr-suit of the truth. The characters are so well developed you become invested in their lives without any effort at all. This is a wonderful debut to what I know will be a paws down successful series.

Disorganized, but interesting possibilities

When librarian and archivist Charlie Harris loses both his wife and his beloved aunt within a few weeks, he returns to his roots in Athena, Mississippi; to the gracious house Aunt Dottie has willed to him. With the help of her faithful housekeeper, he continues his aunt's custom of boarding a few college students each year. This process has gone very smoothly - until now.

When his boarder Justin learns that the man who raised him is not his natural father; and that his real father, a famous author revisiting his home town, wants the boy to live with him, sparks begin to fly. When the author is murdered in his hotel room, Justin and his mother become prime suspects, and Charlie attempts to help clear the boy.

While this cozy has a charming setting and some interesting characters - particularly Diesel, the Maine Coon cat - it seems to have been scrambled together in a bit of a hurry. The author trails more red herrings past us than a fish market; and we never do learn why the police detective is so sure of the guilty party - she doesn't even learn about the clue that will nail it until the arrest at the very end, when she has no time to check it out.

With that said, this first book has a lot of the elements for an entertaining series, if the author can organize her plots better and develop the characters in subsequent books.

Two rungs below awful

This is easily the worst book I've read in years. Here's why:

- Inane dialogue. Sailors spend pages trash talking with no purpose. This is evidently the author's way to establish his "creds" with some sea talk. But the only time people actually talk like this is when they're bored and have nothing to do, not in the middle of a crisis. If things are really that boring, there's no point writing a book about it.

- Deus ex machina. The plot involves hooking 7 fast sealift ships together into a huge floating airfield. Several pages cover the actual linking up of the ships. But then, without a word of explanation, "a miracle happens" and a solid deck appears overhead, then the aircraft start landing. How could the ships have carried all that material, much less had a way to hook it all together well enough for aircraft operations? And have this happen virtually overnight?

- Physics thrown out the window. For example, after the airfield is operational, one of the characters notes how low the ships now are in the water. Huh? Wasn't all the mass on those ships when they sailed, or did the airfield just fall out of the sky during the miracle stage, suddenly making the ships heavier?

- Repetition, repetition, repetition. I lost track of the number of times characters complain about the Navy doing things the business school way. OK, mention it once or twice to make a point, but this is obviously one of the author's pet peeves that he pounds on ad nauseum. Other peeves get similar treatment.

- No adult leadership. I spent my career in the Air Force, but from my dealings with USN acquaintances, I'm pretty sure they like to keep officers in the loop, especially when out of the ordinary events happen, like submarines showing up, torpedoes launching, etc. Granted, this is set in a future where things are downscaled and manning is thin, but the chain of command problems here are ludicrous.

- Boring. Pages and pages go by with nothing useful or interesting happening. This book is a "page turner" in the worst possible way - you keep turning pages just to see how much worse it's going to get.

I haven't read the author's other books - they may be better. But if you want an authentic slice of military life, or even a mildly interesting read, this isn't it.

Another winning military-thriller series by Captain Meadows!

After reading this author's best-selling series THE SIXTH FLEET and JOINT TASK FORCE, I just couldn't wait for this series to debut. But then I got busy writing another novel of my own and had to wait all this time to start this series. A much longer wait than anticipated, but it was worth it!

David Meadows is at the top of his game!

This is an exciting reading adventure that had me on edge, wondering what would happen next and when WERE they ever going to catch the bad guys wreaking havoc on this very original Sea Base.

David Meadows is great at suspense, and the characters are so believable I felt like I were traveling the ocean with them. I particularly loved the feisty little woman the second lead in this book left behind. What an interesting couple to have as friends. They spiced up the book, sending it off on an occasional funny tangent.

To set sail with an intriguing cast in a really different kind of sea story is high adventure. I heartily recommend this series; not only for men but for women and young adults too.

Dark Pacific

I found this book to be a disappointment. The plot is slow, with too much padding by describing each persons every body movement, much too often. I also found his political and religious bias to be just a bit too pronounced. Overall, the scenario is a depressed situation where only low level enlisted men know what is happening and the leadership either incompetent, spies, or other unpleasant descriptions.

This book sounds like the product of a disgruntled employee, with an imagination.

I wasted my money.

Grafton deviates from Kinsey's narration to delve into the killer's history and mind-set, underlining the seriousness of her threat. Kaye offers a crisp, chillingly cold aural portrait of a sociopath capable of anything. Kaye's spot-on interpretation of the two very different leading characters would be praiseworthy enough, but she's just as effective in capturing the elderly men and women, the screechy landladies, the drawling rednecks, the velvet-tongued smooth operators, the fast talking lawyers and all the inhabitants of Kinsey's world.

Although Kinsey Millhone has been around for 25 years, critics agree that T Is for Trespass is one of Sue Grafton’s finest works to date. About elder abuse and identity theft, among other crimes, the novel devotes pages to both Kinsey’s and the villain’s perspectives and thus becomes more of a battle of wits between the two women than a real mystery. As Kinsey decides when and how far to get involved in Gus’s horrific plight, her other cases (a child molester is on the loose, for example) kept critics turning the pages. Reviewers also appreciated that Kinsey ages blissfully slowly—since 1982, when A Is for Alibi was published, she has only gained five years—and thus remains in the Internet-free 1980s, where interpersonal relationships triumph. The ending put off a few critics, but otherwise this 20th installment thoroughly engrosses.

"T" Is For Terrific

The 20th novel in Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series is one of the best. In her last outing, "S" IS FOR SILENCE, Grafton altered her style a bit, actually entering other characters' points of view to tell parts of the story so that they shared the narrating duties with Kinsey herself. With this new novel, that device is used to chilling effect--between reports from Kinsey, we enter the mind of a woman who is possibly her most twisted adversary to date.

Solana Rojas is a caregiver, a home-help nurse's aide much like the thousands you'll find all over America. But the woman assigned to care for Kinsey's elderly friend is not your usual "angel of mercy." For one thing, she is not the real Solana Rojas--she has stolen that woman's identity. And she has plans. To tell you more of the plot would be--well, criminal.

The best aspect of Grafton's excellent series is her ability to keep up with current social and legal problems, despite the fact that Kinsey's stories are set somewhere in the 1980s. In this novel we have identity theft, the inherent problems of home care, and--perhaps most disturbing--the tendency of society in general to ignore and/or mistreat our most vulnerable citizens. At least this elderly victim has Kinsey Millhone as a champion. And what a champion she is! "T" IS FOR TRESPASS will captivate longtime Grafton fans, and it should make her a lot of new fans as well. Highly recommended.

Not a bad novel, but a bit slow for a mystery

I love Sue Grafton/Kinsey Millhone and have recently begun rereading this series. For that reason, the others in the series were fresh in my mind. I don't think I liked this one nearly as well as some of the earlier ones, in part because the device of having the story told from the viewpoint of two characters seemed to slow the book down. I picked up the book and read several times over a period of months before I finally finished the book. Most of the books in this series had me staying up half the night. Grafton is an excellent writer -- her descriptions are never trite, and you can always picture yourself right there with a deftly painted image done with a few words. But -- mysteries need strong plots, and this one just seemed to chug along like an old car that couldn't do more than 40 mph.

I also think that you see no growth or change in Kinsey. I'm getting tired of hearing about the way she cuts her sandwiches and how she loves small spaces. People change. I know this series has four books equal one year in Kinsey's life, but it's been about 5 years since the first book in the series, and Kinsey seems stuck -- she really hasn't changed at all. I know that most people don't stop changing when they turn 30. The series would be far more interesting if -- instead of using a different literary device (two characters telling the story) -- Grafton had something in Kinsey really change -- internally or externally.

My only issue with Sue Grafton's books is her interminable descriptions. If she reduced the descriptions by half, and provide good content in place of, I would enjoy them much more.
She as a rule doesn't have any sexual content, but a good deal of wondering by her protagonist. Its generally in passing, and does add to the story.

Something to get your hook into

This book (the first in a seiries by Betty Hechtman) ia about Molly Pink, a 40ish widow who is starting to put her life back together. She works at a bookstore as an events planner. She has 2 grown and out of the house sons and a beau who is serious about her, but she's not quite ready for that step. A good life, but nothing you would think would lead to a murder mystery.
As it happens, there is a group of crocheters that meet at the bookstore. The leader of the group leaves her bag of hooks at the bookstore. Molly decides to take it to her house. That's where the problems begin.
Molly walks into a house where the front foor wasn't closed. She looks for Ellen Sheridan, the Tarzana Hookers' leader. And Molly finds her - on the floor, dead. Of course, at that point, the cops show up. How do you explain to a cop that you were just returning somebody's crochet hooks and happened upon the body? There are twists and turns in the story as Molly tries to figure out who actually committed the murder since she's the prime suspect - thanks to a cop who is interested in Molly's beau. Along the way, Molly learns how to crochet and joins the Tarzana Hookers. You get to see her develop as a crocheter. And of course, the rest of the Tarzana Hookers secrets come spilling out like yarn overstuffed in a closet.
M's Hechtman writes a charming fast paced book. It's almost as if a friend came over for a cup of tea and was relating part of her history to you. I'd recommend this book highly to amateur sleuth mystery lovers, especially fans of the Diane Mott Davidson's seiries. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

A Cute Crochet Mystery!

I thought "Hooked On Murder" by Betty Hechtman was the cutest little crochet mystery. It's light reading, but thoroughly enjoyable. It had me chuckling throughout, as I recognized in myself (a long-time crocheter) a lot of the "crochet behavior" exhibited by the characters. Perhaps the knit/crochet rivalry was slightly overdone, but, for me, that made it all the more funny. The mystery itself was satisfying, too -- had me guessing until chapter 20 when I finally figured it out.

I'm going to read "Dead Men Don't Crochet" next and am looking forward to the the third in the series. Hopefully by then, there will be a love scene or two.

Great Read.

Loved the book. I'm definitely picking up more in this series in the future. At first I didn't think I'd like the story but I did get into the story and enjoyed it.

*Starred Review* In January, Box branched out from his popular Joe Pickett series with a stand-alone thriller, Blue Heaven (2008). His publisher for that book seems to be pushing him toward a broader audience—even ditching his familiar black Stetson in the author photo. Longtime fans might have wondered whether Pickett would soon be an also-ran. But there’s no need to worry just yet. Although Blood Trail is a mite slimmer than its predecessors (two books a year will do that to a writer), Box is clearly still comfortable in the saddle. And his game warden—now a special agent reporting directly to the governor—is still as dogged on the trail as he is hard on government-issued vehicles. There’s a little less family time for Joe, but there are some interesting developments in his friendship with the enigmatic Nate Romanowski. Joe needs Nate’s help and some luck besides, because it’s elk season, and someone is hunting elk hunters. And with a flamboyant anti-hunting activist coming to town with his supporters, it’s looking like another classic standoff: implacable ideologues on both sides and a pondering Pickett caught in the middle. Box always addresses a New West issue, but there’s something great about the way he’s waited until the eighth installment to tackle the one that would seem most obvious, given his hero’s occupation. First Sentence: I am a hunter, a bestower of dignity.

Joe Pickett, now working director for the Governor of Wyoming, is called to go to a murder scene where an elk hunter has been murdered and his body treated like the quarry he sought. This isn't the first such killing.

The Governor puts Joe on the multi-agency investigation, in spite of the antipathy between him and his former boss, Randy Pope. While dealing with a killer and more deaths, Joe has to find out if the appearance in Wyoming of anti-hunting radical Klamath Moore is involved.

In order to track down the killer, Joe persuades the Governor to release his friend, and expert tracker, Nate Romanowski, who is being held in federal prison awaiting trial.

Joe Pickett is a character I really like and it is clear Box knows him well. Pickett is strongly tied to his small, nuclear family of wife and two daughters, he's loyal to his friends, and believes in what he does. One character also made the observation that Pickett cares more for the dead than he does for the living, both animals and humans. All the elements of the story emphasize these points.

Box does get a bit preach-y when it comes to the distinction of true hunters who how respect the land and animals versus ego hunters and town dwellers, but I also felt he made some good points.

What did disappoint me, and thus lowered my rating, was the obvious nature of some of the clues. I knew where the story was going way too early. I was also disappointed in the direction he took with the character of Nate. The book is violent but it's also quite suspenseful.

Box is a very talented writer; I find his book stay with me long after I've closed the covers. I'm a still a fan and look forward to seeing where Box is taking his characters.

BLOOD TRAIL, featuring Mr. Box's folksy Joe Pickett, perfectly blends mesmerizing suspense, unique characters, a non-stop, action-filled, twisting plot into a page-turning fervor.

I told my wife (who has also read all of the author's previous novels) that I was going to stay up an extra hour to finish BLOOD TRAIL. The conclusion was so dynamic, even to the very last page, when I finally crawled into bed I could not fall asleep.

My mind had been permanently transcended into the deep woods of Wyoming. Visions of Joe Pickett, Nate Romanowski, Randy Pope and the many other deftly crafted characters continued to stir my thoughts.

I heartily agree with the other reviewers that BLOOD TRAIL is Mr. Box's most compelling novel to date...and one of the best I have read all year!

Excellent police procedural

Joe Pickett loved being the game warden of the Saddlestring District, but he was fired by Randy Pope, the Wyoming State Director. Now he is a troubleshooter for the governor and a substitute for game wardens throughout the state who are ill or on vacation. Currently it is elk hunting season; one of the hunters has been killed, skinned, and found tied upside down to a tree branch missing his head.

The governor wants Joe to find the perpetrator before he is forced to close state lands from hunters and ask the Feds to do likewise. Unlike his usual on the job distant professionalism, Pope is hands on leading the investigation. When they go into the woods tracking the killer, he is missing though his friend is there as back-up. The tracker is killed. At about the same time shots are fired and Randy's friend dies. Activist Klamath Moore, some feds feels terrorist is more descriptive, and his wife Shannon arrive in town stirring up those people against hunting because he believes killing animals for sports is ethically apprehensible. Joe begins to figure out what is going on when he gets his friend Nate released from federal custody but he doesn't want to believe where the evidence points. .

The Joe Pickett police procedurals are unique action-packed thrillers starring a hero who thinks outside of the box, which is why he lost his job. The villain is multifaceted as he is leaving a message behind for hunters who will NRA the killer with disdain and readers who will feel sorry for that person. However, this is Joe's series and he is determined to bring justice to the killer knowing that this time it will hurt badly as he sympathizes with the culprit and believes he may know the person. Using a secondary character, C .J. Box also warns the audience that the natural beauty of the parks are in jeopardy by those whose strategic planning is less than fifteen minutes as instant satisfaction is all that matters.
