Read this book and share it

We've all read the books and articles that tell us that mothers can have it all - the perfect baby, perfect marriage, flexible job, etc...but what happened when you found out everything wasn't perfect? That new reality was difficult for me. The worst part was that I thought I was the only one that felt confused and out of place. In Kristin Maschka's book she takes on the issues that mothers and families face (and usually don't talk about) in a way that is smart, funny and personal. Some of the chapters include:
- The mother of all to-do lists - or why didn't anyone tell me how hard this is?
- Oxygen masks - or why am I at the bottom of my own lists?
- Identity whiplash - or who am I now?
- I'm a square peg - or why doesn't my job fit anymore?
- That sinking feeling - or why do I feel financially vulnerable?
And many more intriguing topics...
Not only does she raise these issues and encourage us to challenge our assumptions about them, she also provides straightforward tools and resources to help us make changes that can impact our own lives and families, the lives of other mothers and society.
This is a book that every mother should read, share and talk about with family and friends.

A Good Effort
By Learning New Ways
I have read a number of books about changing family structure recently, including "Equally Shared Parenting", "Avoiding the Mommy Trap", "The Four-Thirds Solution" and others.

Gen-Xers have struggled with these issues (I am about the same age as the author), and we had a lack of models and books for this in the 1990s. We benefited from all the work done in the 1960s and 1970s to give women and men more equal rights, but the work of actually putting it into practice in families and in the workplace then fell to us. We have succeeded somewhat, I think, but I think we can do more. I hope as we move into more senior status here in the next ten years, we continue to "pay it forward" by helping those after us as we were helped.

This book makes a contribution by illustrating: (a) that our tax and benefits systems are structured around the sole breadwinner and female primary parent, and(b) what it is like to break through from a traditional marriage set up in that style, or a transitional marriage where each person has one foot in old ways and one foot in new ways, to a truly modern marriage of equals, where each partner is both earning and taking responsibility for the unpaid work of the family. Her account of the "next wedding" is very moving.

The author is candid and courageous in discussing her personal experiences, and she appears to be working hard to help others who wish to change to do so.

The book is weaker than other books of this kind, however, because the author doesn't appear to have really let go of the psychology of the female primary parent and to have taken full responsibility for earning. There are many references in the book to setting up social programs that (a) enable low-income mothers not to work for pay and to stay at home with children (did we learn nothing from the Moynihan programs which effectively paid women to have children and saw men as having no personal or financial responsibility for children; I met a woman recently who had 11 children on welfare, for example, and many of those children are still in poverty today), (b) that provide extra, unfunded Social Security benefits to women who stay home with children (where does the money come for this? There is no discussion of charging the sole breadwinner in this set-up 2x payroll taxes (or premiums) to pay for this), and (c) that see mothers as "entitled to fully explore and develop her identity as she chooses: as a woman, a citizen, a parent, or an employee" (the idea that it can be a "choice" to skip one of these identities seems at odds with the theme of the book; moreover there is no discussion of these choices having consequences).

Because of this focus, which may have to do with the author wanting to maintain her political base of the "Mothers and More" group, the book lacks a discipline and focus that is necessary to create real change to make it easier for people who want 2-earner/2-parent families to get them.

I was struck while reading this book at how this contributes to the polarization in our economy between (a) sole breadwinner types like Paul Ryan and other GoP folks who loathe social programs like Social Security and Medicare because they see these programs as having no value and (b) the mommybloggers and mommyculture who still look to men as primary earners (creating the psychology that someone like Paul Ryan has) and who seem to be meandering around with these issues rather than taking real action to take responsibility for earning, to view these programs with a more disciplined eye and thus to initiate the change in family structure needed to eliminate the polarization.

This author is taking action, and I thank her for that, but she might have done better if she had been more disciplined about this. As she notes herself, as soon as she got a job and took earning seriously, her husband stepped up his efforts at taking responsibility for unpaid work of the family; she called this a "self-fulfilling prophecy". As soon as she and her husband acknowledged the importance of their daughter having a good relationship with her father, he started taking daily responsibility for her. These are the basics that are needed; if every woman just did these things alone, our world would be a better place, and I suspect our political polarization would resolve.

A Remodeled Mother

Like Kristin Maschka, I thought I had a pretty modern view on motherhood and family, but sometimes things just didn't feel right. How come I was the one who just knew everything about our child and the household? From knowing when our daughter needed her next appointment with the pediatrician to tackling mountains of laundry and other household chores, I couldn't understand why I had all those family responsibilities... while sharing pretty equally in the breadwinnning too.

Then I read Remodeling Motherhood and it all became clear. Maschka calls out some of those "mental maps" that are hiding behind our every thought and action. I thought I believed that my husband and I should share the family work equally since we are both employed, but I realized that I held a subconscious belief that "mothers are naturally better at caring for children" just as Maschka writes about through her own experience. That hidden belief was causing me to knock myself out, trying to handle more than my fair share of the work at home. But the truth is that dads and partners can be equally good at raising their kids, and should be given the chance to try.

Life since reading this book has changed for the better. In a "remodeled" moment one Saturday morning, our young child needed bath, but I also had another very important obligation to tend to. As I was trying to give my child a speed-bath, I realized that I believed that as the mother, I should be the one to give all the baths. Garbage. My husband could do it. I called him to take over, while I did what I needed to do. You know what? He did a great job.

We haven't looked back since.

Lost its way

I wanted to like Night Huntress a lot more than I did. To me Yasmine Galenorn created a series that was a perfect blend of Urban and High Fantasy. The series revolves around three (not quite human) sisters, placed here from OW (a traditional High Fantasy land) who are on a quest to find and protect 9 seals that united by the evil Shadow Wing will allow the barriers between OW, Earth and the underworld inhabited by demons and the like, to fall and cause armageddon. I used to play Dungeons and Dragons and, like many others, tried to find a way of playing my D&D characters in a modern day setting. The Sisters of the Moon series was the story I didn't have the imagination to tell.

So I am extremely disappointed that I find myself less and less enthralled by the books. There are a number of reasons. For starters I think that YG made a mistake when she cast the novels in first person. There is so much action that we don't get to see because the narrator isn't present at the encounter that it gets frustrating. Action instead of exposition. Show instead tell. Anyone writer or reader can tell you that's one of the rules of storytelling, but the format is forcing more and more exposition because the sisters can't be everywhere at one time.

However I think that the series really fails when it comes to the romantic relationships. There seems to be a rule in UF series that the butt kicking heroine must be entangled with multiple men at one time; and that the men can't be good for her. So Delilah, who has been having a relationship with Chase, a full blooded human (FBH) who runs the Fey-FBH CSI task force turns from a pretty decent guy to a cad. And, we find out, he's been a cad to women for his whole life. Delilah, hurt, turns to Zach, a werepuma who is absolutely perfect for her. He understands her changeling side, is crazy about her, and is gorgeous to boot. But when Chase gets himself kidnapped and everyone goes off to rescue him Delilah decides that she *loves* Chase. In one of the sickliest scenes in UF today, her dagger comes to life because of her ability to love true. Chase is rescued. And in the end Chase and Delilah try to give their relationship another shot-while Zach recovers from having his back broken saving Chase's life.

As an end note, it's hard to root for a relationship on paper, where in reality I'd tell the couple to break up and get therapy

Strictly Fun

I had trouble rating this one. For sheer enjoyment I'd give it a four out of five; it's really fun, with plenty of wacky characters and wild ideas. However, I do have a couple of stylistic niggles.

First, combat felt a wee bit too much like a D&D session to me. Things were over-described a lot (such as where each exit was in a room). Even though the characters acknowledge early on in one major raid on a demon-infested house that their opponents probably have preternatural hearing AND already know they're there, they stand around in the hallway debating and planning strategy endlessly.

Second, if I'm going to read erotic romance novels then I'm willing to set aside a certain amount of my normal sensitivity to overwrought description. That only goes so far, however, and a line that describes a lover's... ahem... as "a white-hot match that reached into my center to ignite my flame" just makes me snicker.

Finally, I found I couldn't buy into the love plot, which is tough on a romance (although since Chase, Delilah's boyfriend, isn't around for much of the book, it isn't as bad as you'd think). I realize the author seems to want to make some sort of point about not giving up on troubled relationships with imperfect people, but Chase comes across as enough of a jackass, and the author just doesn't make me believe in some sort of all-overcoming love between the two of them, that I seriously found myself cheering on Zach, the competition for Delilah's affections. Maybe this is one of those things I would have been able to get on board with if I'd read the previous books.

I realize that after spending so much space on what I didn't like, I've probably made it sound as though I didn't enjoy Night Huntress. However, that isn't the case. There's plenty of action, suspense, and wacky human-fae politics to keep things jumping, and I loved reading about all of that. Consider my rating a 3.5---higher if my stylistic issues don't bother you.

very "meh"

I want to preface this review by saying I have read all the previous 'Sister of Moon' books, and am quite a fan of urban fantasy. I am currently following several series in the genre, including the Mercy Thompson (my favorite!), Kate Daniels (2nd fave), Rachel Morgan, Women of the Otherworld and a few others. Now that my credentials are established...

Out of all the UF series that I have read and stuck with, I would have to say that Sister of the Moon is the very weakest of the lot, and Night Huntress is a weak entry for the series. It seems to be on a decline, after a bump upwards with Darkling.

This book centers on Delilah, the werecat/panther/Death Maiden (if that doesn't make sense to you, that should prove that this isn't really a stand-alone novel and the whole series should be read to understand the concepts). There is a continuous plot running throughout all the books, but honestly I have to say it is getting really muddled, and from one book to the next I don't feel the flow is creating any sense of escalating tension.

The writing is mediocre at best, and I just feel Ms. Galenorn is losing the audience. That's sad to me, because I actually really do enjoy the three main heroines (many supporting characters are flat fillers, though) and am still interested in them enough to see what happens to them. Hopefully the next entry will be a step up, as the previous Menolly-centered book was my favorite of the series.

(One side note: Why the heck is Delilah (w/ her sisters' support) so keen on being with Chase? I have 0 sympathy after learning more about him and, especially with Zach being darn near perfect, the Chase dilemna seems just bizarre.)

Patterson: Here's a chance to say all the great things the critics would about The Scarpetta Factor, if there were any newspapers left that still reviewed books. Or, as they say in the TV interviews: Tell us about this one, Patricia.

Cornwell: As was true in the last book (Scarpetta), the new one is set in New York City, and it begins with Kay Scarpetta working on the autopsy of a young woman who presumably was murdered the night before in Central Park. While the apparent circumstances of the violent crime say one thing, the body is telling Scarpetta a very different and incredibly disturbing story that causes the prosecutor, the police, other officials, and even Scarpetta's friends and colleagues, to wonder if she's making mistakes or has begun to believe her own legend. While others are questioning and criticizing her, she begins to doubt herself and her decision to be the senior forensic analyst for CNN—an exposure that possibly leads to her BlackBerry disappearing and a suspicious package being left for her at her apartment building. As the intrigue unfolds, the past is no longer past, and she is soon faced with an old nemesis who threatens to be her final undoing.

Patterson: This book is set in New York again—what do you like about the Big City? What don't you like?

Cornwell: Certainly New York City is the ultimate Big City. By placing Scarpetta in the midst of NYC within its medical examiner's office, I've positioned her on an international stage where anything can and does happen. The machinery is huge (NYPD and the FBI field office, for example), yet the private lives of the characters remain intimate and small. Not only is this a big story about a big-city case that captivates the world, it's also a very close look at the characters and who and what they are to one another in contemporary times. In terms of what I like and don't like about NYC? The only thing I don't like about it is driving there.

Patterson: I often get asked what I have in common with Alex Cross. What would you say you have in common with Kay Scarpetta?

Cornwell: Scarpetta and I share the same values and sensibilities. We approach cases the same way (which should be rather obvious, since I work the cases by taking on her persona). Beyond that, there are many differences. I'm not Catholic or Italian or married to Benton Wesley. I'm not a forensic pathologist with a law degree. I don't have her emotional discipline or inhibitions, nor do I have her professional dazzle. (I always remind people I was an English major who started working at age eleven, first as a babysitter, then in food service!) I don't have Scarpetta's pedigree. But then, she isn't a writer, unless she's writing professional journal articles or autopsy reports.

Patterson: What's your routine like when it comes to writing? Do you do write every day? On the road? Do you need vacations from your writing?

Cornwell: I wish I had more of a routine. I begin each book with research that continues up to the very end of the process. But gradually, as I approach the deadline, I sink deeper into seclusion until eventually I don’t even answer e-mails or the phone anymore (unless it's my partner, Staci). I just write morning, noon, and night. The pulling together and completion of a novel is so intense, I'm almost living out of body by the time I'm done. It's the most wonderful and miserable experience imaginable. I would love a vacation but never seem to have time, and I doubt I'd know what to do if you made me "do nothing." In fact, Staci and I have a strange habit of going to foreign lands and visiting their police departments and morgues instead of just hanging out at the beach. I don't write every day because I do so much research, and currently, I have many other responsibilities that keep me busier than ever (filming, involvement with forensic institutes—just the business of life, for example).

Patterson: What's the best feedback you've had from a reader? Or—what was the best piece of writing advice you've had?

Cornwell: Frankly, the best feedback was when a reader complained some years ago that he wasn’t sure I liked my characters anymore. And I thought about this and realized I wasn’t sure I did, either. A horrible thing to realize. It was because the series had gone on for so long that it was time to reinvent the characters and their relationships with one another and the world they inhabit. I think this remake is most apparent in the last book, Scarpetta, and I am on a wonderful and invigorating new course that is even more evident in the new one, The Scarpetta Factor.

Patterson: Bonus question: How do you feel about the Hollywood adaptations of your work? Don't be afraid—let it all hang out.

Cornwell: In the past, very disappointed, because the projects went nowhere. Now, so far so good. The first films (Lifetime movies of At Risk and The Front, which are non-Scarpetta novellas) air this spring. I had a magnificent experience from beginning to end with the producers, actors—everyone. It's way too early to talk about the 20th Century Fox project with Angelina Jolie, although who wouldn't be excited about her?

What A Fan Wants

Your sales were down 50% from last year. You failed to hit the #1 slot on the NYT bestsellers list for the first time in, like, a hundred years. So what do we, the readers, want?

1. Brevity. Your last two books ballooned to 500 pages. And you used to be so concise!!

2. The third person has to go. We all loved Kay, we loved hearing her thoughts.

3. Dump the spouse. Benton is boring. Your new forays into the mind and psychobabble are also boring.

4. Go back to the morgue. Yes, it's been done a billion times since you introduced it but readers still like it and you still do it better than anyone.

5. Take a lesson from Sue Grafton. U is for Undertow just hit #1. The Scarpetta Factor did not. Kinsey's still Kinsey. Kay is no longer Kay. There's no more sharp tone, sharp heels, dread, bad dreams, bad tempers, worry, loss of appetite, compassion, sleepless nights, wry banter with Marino, ability to work 5 days straight without changing clothes .... We want that back. None of this idealized version you've given us, with everyone lusting after her or admiring her or losing it while she floats above it all in her highrise apartments. What happened to her gardens, the fresh tomatoes, the cooking? Highrises are so sterile. Benton is so sterile. (The Scarpetta Factor had one cooking scene at the end that felt very contrived.)

6. Stop trying to elevate Kay. She got fired from Richmond. She tried and ended several apparently unsuccessful businesses. With that past no way will she be on CNN hosting the Scarpetta Factor. That would be like you hosting CNBC. Ain't gonna happen. Kay's superiority came from her brains and moral compass -- not her jobs and not her money.

7. But what's wrong with being "just" an M.E. in NY or Boston anyway? It's what we want.

8. Marino is a big, crude, uncouth man. Forever, he'll have wisps of hair and trail his raincoat belt. He's a great cop. Why mess with him? Forget the biker, forget the shaved head. Marino's all about cheap suits. Remember that.

9. Lucy is best in very, very small doses. She's WAY too crazy and a brat and should have been in jail long ago. If you're going to keep her, keep her relatively poor. She got crazier with every dollar.

10. Your own words: "Write what you know." You know cops. You know forensics. You're not a shrink. We don't want you to be.

11. Ditto: "All my science is real." Now it's suddenly "possible." Awful. Stop that.

12. You used to have beautifully written scenes. Now it's dialogue and the most basic prose. "The Monday I carried Ronnie Joe Waddell's meditation in my pocketbook, I never saw the sun. It was dark out when I drove to work that morning. It was dark again when I drove home. Small raindrops spun in my headlights, the night gloomy with fog and bitterly cold. I built a fire in my living room and envisioned Virginia farmland and tomatoes ripening in the sun. I imagined a young black man in the hot cab of a pickup truck and wondered if his head had been full of murder back then...."

That was good stuff.

13. Stay on track. You had a formula: Kay solves a death, someone's after Kay. Sometimes that someone had to do with the case, sometimes not. Simple. Stop taking these unending side trips to nowhere with dog torturers, and weird lonely people. Your bad guys have gone from a gentle man crazy under the influence of drugs (Waddell), to a beautiful and evil mother to the brilliant Gault to increasingly far-fetched fantasies. Werewolves, shrinks, twisted celebs.... Sometimes simple is elegant.

14. Stop being too topical. Your best books -- your earliest books -- are a pleasure, a comfort, to pick up. I can't tell what the economy was doing or who was president. They carry me deep into a world I don't know but find exciting and want to know. I don't want so many reminders of where I actually am.

15. NO SEX. Not with Kay, not with cardboard Benton, certainly not with Marino. Really. At this point it would be like hearing about your parents having sex. Do NOT want to go there.

16. Quantico was a great place to visit. Yeah, yeah, you hate the FBI since you-know-what but they once gave you a wonderful vehicle. Maybe it's time to forgive and forget.

17. You made a huge mistake when you brought Benton back. You made another mistake when Marino did that crazy thing you said he did -- I won't even dignify it by repeating it, it's so out of character. You made another mistake when you made Lucy as rich as Buffett and as lawless as a criminal. The Rocco murder -- too crazy to even address. As readers, we don't gasp and say "brilliant! we didn't see it coming." We say it's out of character and would never happen.

18. You made another mistake when Kay got married (UGH!) and shared her space. Kay was a hero to the unsung, to misfits, to the weak. She's friends with judges but family to Lucy and Marino. (Oddly enough, Benton has never felt like family.) She's somehow diluted by Benton. She's become something less, taken on some of his duller, cooler colors. She seems meeker, removed, out of touch. It's terrible to see.

19. Benton was at least bearable in the beginning. He had a talent (now it's useless psychobabble and navel-staring). He had a twinkle in his eye. Now he's petty and vindictive. For sure, Kay and Benton shouldn't be working together.

20. Get an editor. No, a real one, not your ex- for Pete's sake! One who's not afraid to take a red pen to your work and keep you honest.

The best of the series in a long long time

To be frank, I was never going to read another Scarpetta mystery after the last few disasters that Cornwell wrote. However, there the book was on the new releases shelf at the library staring down at me with a silent "read me" plea. Seemed like fate that I got to the library in time to pick up Cornwell's latest entry in the ongoing Scarpetta series. I opened it and started reading with a lot of trepidation as her last few books have been truly dreadful. To sum it up--I was pleasantly surprised to find Cornwell has regained her stride in the series and has written a taut, suspenseful mystery with believable characters and situations. There are a lot of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end.

The series opens with Scarpetta doing pro bono work in New York City as well as fulfilling her role as senior forensic analyst for CNN. During her appearance on the CNN show she is asked about details on the ongoing case of Hannah Starr. The complexity of the mystery starts to weave almost immediately. Her husband Benton and her friend Marino are clashing. Her niece Lucy continues to waiver between the gray areas of the law. But all three must work together with Scarpetta as they race to solve this mystery.

This book still lacks some of the sparkling dialogue of the first books and rehashes old hurts and insults. However, Scarpetta comes of more human somehow as she struggles with the mystery of Hannah Starr, the offer of her own show, her shaky marriage, her injured friendship with Marino, and of course her troubled niece. It is truly nice to see Cornwell once again pick up the reigns of the series and alter course for the better!

Too long and over-stuffed with technical jargon

At 500 pp this book needs serious editing. Parts of it were incredibly boring (mostly the Benton parts) and parts of it were meaninglessly techno-filled. Cornwell tries to dazzle us with all the research she does but the book would be A LOT better if Kay and her world were the focus and the Bentons and Lucys remained minor satellites. In fact, if she cut out most of the stuff she probably learned from the list of people in the acknowledgements, she'd have a stronger and more readable book. Resorting to recycling one of the most mocked and reviled characters in Scarpetta lore was unnecessary, too.

Not one of her best, not one of her worst, but I don't understand what's now a two-book trend of forcing us to swallow 500 pages. She leads us on long and detailed side trips with characters and drama that turn out to be irrelevant and unnecessary and I'm not talking about red herrings, either, but long, winding meanderings: Agee, his hearing problems, Berger and her romance woes with Lucy, the ridiculous voodoo/poo-poo bomb, Hap and his necrophilia, the missing Blackberry and the huge drama surrounding it, the RIDICULOUS and boring psycho-babbling between Benton and an old colleague in the beginning of the book that nearly had me putting the book down for good; the immature Benton-Marino tension that dissolved seemingly in an instant. It's a shame that Cornwell feels the need to keep piling on to keep our interest.

It was interesting that Lucy apparently has lost a substantial part of her fortune. It may be the best thing to ever happen to Lucy as her brattiness and craziness seemed to increase with her wealth. That was an event that I thought deserved more detail and certainly more of an emotional reaction from Kay.

Journalist Post, on assignment for Philadelphia magazine, met in 2001 with WWII vets Guarnere and Heffron to discuss their service and their portrayal in the soon-to-be-aired HBO miniseries Band of Brothers (based on the book by Stephen E. Ambrose). In this new book, Post has compiled the transcripts of her interviews to provide a personal history of the 101st Airborne Division's Easy Company, as well as the soldiers' own stories of growing up and growing old. Switching off between the two within chapters, Post allows Guarnere and Heffron to share narration duties as they recount their South Philly childhoods, their induction into Easy Company (Guarnere was there for the company's formation; Heffron joined after D-Day) and their work in it, from the disastrous Operation Market Garden to the frozen hell of Bastogne. The men also discuss their post-war lives, and those of their comrades; 60 years after meeting, these two men still call each other nearly every day, and their bond provides the volume its large heart. Both men are quick to point out that they're no heroes, just men with a job to do (despite the fact that they each received, and tore up, exemptions from service); they and their story are both remarkable, and a must-read for anyone who enjoyed Band of Brothers in print or on screen.

For true Band of Brothers fans, "Wild Bill" Guarnere and "Babe" Heffron need no introduction. Although the foreword by actor Tom Hanks is a sincere and fitting tribute (both men think very highly of Hanks), it was not necessary to help promote this wonderfully written book. Journalist Robyn Post gives us Heffron and Guarnere in the rough with South Philly colloquialisms in tact. Five years in the making, _Brothers in Battle Best of Friends_ (a more fitting title would be impossible to conjure) joins the memoirs of Dick Winters, David Kenyon Webster, Donald R. Burgett, and a host of other histories of the 101st Airborne Division in World War II.

Post brings her readers right into the men's living rooms. One gets the impression that Bill and Babe are sitting across from them in an easy chair sipping a beer, recounting their amazing experiences. Post arranges the book nicely. Though both men grew up only blocks apart in South Philly, they would not meet until Babe joined Easy Company in England after the Normandy battles. Recognizing Babe's South Philly accent (for those who ever had a friend from Philly, you know the accent) the men became fast friends. Guarnere ensured Babe was placed in Joe Toye's squad because he knew Toye would take care of "the dirty rat." Both men soldiered through Holland, the bitter cold and horrendous fighting at Bastogne where both Toye and Guarnere were horribly wounded by the same artillery round and both men lost a leg. Babe then carries the narrative to war's end, while Bill recounts his journey through recovery and the physical and mental readjustments he overcame, all the while "just happy to be alive." Chapters on the men's lives and sixty-two year enduring friendship after the war, their travels back to Europe today, and an Epilogue written by actors Frank John Hughes and Robin Laing ("Bill" and "Babe" respectively) round out the book.

Like the memoirs of Winters and Webster, the book ties up loose ends created by both the written and film versions of Band of Brothers. For example, in the film, Guarnere, played by Hughes goes AWOL from hospital to return to Easy Company just prior to heading to Bastogne. Winters advises Guarnere about taking any more "joy rides" and the film leaves it at that. In the book, Guarnere recounts having been previously shot in the leg by a sniper while riding across an open field on a motorcycle in Holland to check on his men (a scene that would have been an exciting addition to the film). Heffron, never forgetting his Catholic school upbringing, recounts his personal feelings during the liberation of the Landsburg concentration camp, and listening to his inner voice that stopped him from throwing a hand grenade into a house in Germany. Breaking down the door with his rifle butt, Heffron discovered a terrified mother and her small children crouched in a corner. Heffron is still haunted with the thought of what would have happened had he thrown the grenade.

Bill and Babe's message is crystal clear, however: war is hell, and the men do not attempt to sugarcoat that fact. The grim reality of shooting German POWs, alluded to in the film is further confirmed within these pages. Today, when a youngster writes a letter to the pair stating he wants to go off to war and bee "heroes" like them, Bill and Babe reply with an astonished "What? Are you crazy?" Both men survived some of the most brutal combat of World War II, and not a day goes by that they do not think of the friends that were killed. Both men's dry humor shines through as well, and one finds oneself laughing hysterically on one page and welling up in tears on the next. Guarnere repeatedly emphasizes that World War II was won through a team effort of all the combined services, and that he and Babe were just two individual members of that enormous team. Two guys from South Philly, imparting a lifetime of wisdom that we can all benefit from. This book is a must read, and one that will reach further than a circle of loyal Band of Brothers fans!

South Philly's Finest

The real hero's of WWII didn't come home according to Babe Heffron. Well Bill and Babe have heroically told the stories of those men for 63 years. Right out of Damon Runyon these two characters, as labeled by a priest, through thick and thin have survived the Depression, Third Reich, health problems and all that life can throw at them. No sissys here, they both are giving and caring beyond the point they would admit. From foxhole to hole in the wall,the story of their loyalty, honesty and true devotion to each other is unparalleled. It is one of the greatest gifts that we have from their generation and it is a testimony that todays society can certainly use. Robyn Post's book has brought to the public the heartfelt tale of two different men who, damn the consequences, are buddies forever.

Bravo for "Brothers in Battle"

"Babe" Heffron and "Wild" Bill Guarnere will be familiar "Screaming Eagles" to anyone who read Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers" or watched the HBO series of the same name. These two kids from South Philly have quite a story to tell and it is a marvelous one.

"Brothers in Battle - Best of Friends" is much more than a rehash of tales from the Easy Company canon. The voices of these two "characters" are loud, clear and distinct. Reading the book is as sweet as sitting down on a bar stool at the local tavern and listening to two fun-loving warriors share their hard-won yarns from rigorous training at Toccoa to the many reunions throughout the United States and overseas.

Bill remembers the lessons from Georgia, "We got the basics on the Germans, too--their soldiers, guns, ammo, artillery, tanks. We didn't know all about what they were doing, just that they overran Europe, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Austria, Poland, Russia, and they were going after England. That's all we knew."

Guarnere continued, "We trained harder than any other company. You already got the hardest training in the Army, you're a paratrooper, but [Captain Herbert] Sobel doubled it. Everyone in Toccoa knew about Sobel and Easy Company. We got a reputation real fast."

Babe recalls with vivid detail the liberation of the concentration camp at Landsberg, "There was a young Hungarian Jewish girl, she had her hands on the bars and she was looking through at us. She was crying, and she was saying, `You are my heroes, my angels, my God, we're free, we're free at last.'"

Both Guarnere and Heffron vigorously avoid accepting "hero" as their own. When you read their book, you may agree to disagree. Among the many joys of "Brothers in Battle" are their hilarious notes about their many return trips to the former "Fortress Europa." They loved the Dutch, and had a marvelous retort when they encountered a pay toilet in France.

Frank John Hughes, the splendid actor who portrayed "Wild Bill" in the HBO series offers the perfect salute to Heffron and Guarnere, "With boundless love and respect I cheer "Currahee!' to both of them."

Do yourself a big favor and put this book in your library. Robyn Post's collaborative work with Babe and Bill is a welcome companion to the volumes by Ambrose, Major Dick Winters and Colonel Cole Kingseed.

On second thought this book might be closer to spending cherished time with a father, grandfather, brother, or uncle who never came back from the war, or never set down their load to share his own story about the absurdities, horrors and atrocities of war. God bless all the brothers in battle who bear such a heavy burden. Thank you, Bill and Babe!

Lion's Heat is more of the same from Leigh

`Lion's Heat' is more of what we have seen recently from Lora Leigh. This will mean different things to different readers. Those who have loved her recent works will also love `Lion's Heat', and for them a 5-star review is fitting (and this review will probably not be helpful). Those who have had problems with books such as `Bengal's Heart', `Black Jack', etc., will have similar problems with `Lion's Heat', although it is worth a read just to rejoin the world of the Breeds. This review is addressed to the later group.

`Lion's Heat' starts with a bang; Jonas Wyatt, the Director of the Bureau of Breed Affairs, the lion who's story we have been waiting for for so long, meets his mate. His mate, Rachel Broen, also happens to be his new personal assistant. Rachel is pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's child, but that does nothing to affect Jonas' love. Jump forward several months, and Brandenmore, a geneticist who has tortured and experimented on Breeds, threatens Amber, Rachel's daughter. Jonas brings his mate and her child to the safety of Sanctuary, and little else happens until the exciting conclusion of the book.

The Breeds are one of the most interesting, intricate series out there, which keeps readers coming back again and again. To keep building a world an author must drop clues about characters and future puzzles, which provides a strong background for upcoming books and keeps readers engaged. Leigh does this fantastically, and `Lion's Heat' is no exception. The flip-side to dropping hints is that once the author reaches the book involving a particular character or puzzle, they must reveal the details, and in `Lion's Heat' Leigh almost completely fails to do that.

In past books Leigh has described the Bureau as a mysterious and exciting place of espionage, daring rescues, and black ops. I was highly looking forward to learning more about it here, but with exception of revelation of the Ghost Team, she provides no detail. Her characters are similarly blank. Although Jonas and Rachel are obviously the perfect mates for one another, as individuals they leave a lot to be desired. We learn nothing about Rachel's background or who she is as a person other than the barest of details, and some information about Amber's father and her sister Diana, (necessary because they both show up in the book). Her parents died when she was young, but we don't learn how or what happened to her. She has an exceptional ability to control any outward manifestation of her emotions, but again, the why and how aren't answered. As much as I hate to say it, Jonas is another disappointment. Without the detail that Leigh provided in previous books Jonas would be a blank slate. We learn nothing new about his life in the labs beyond what was discussed in `Harmony's Way', and nothing about his life in the interim. His interaction with Amber was incredibly sweet, as was his determination to spare Rachel from the mating heat. Beyond that though, he lacked the strength and vitality that made him such an exceptional character in other books.

Leigh's books have had problems with editing in the past; the timeline between books has been confusing, world-building details change from one book to the next, and those problems continue. The failure of basic copy editing in `Lion's Heat' however is a new low. There are numerous basic typos; `don't' left in one sentence, `not' not in another, Rachel wearing a "white long sleeved black cardigan", and more. Characters are referred to by the wrong name or title. There are scene continuity errors; first they're in the car, then they're in the room, and just how did that baby fly into a crib without anyone touching her? There are still other plot continuity errors; in one scene Rachel knows nothing about mating heat, in the next Merinus has told her all about it, and then it has reversed again. Thoughts and actions are repeated in the same scene. Punctuation errors abound, and the list just goes on. I can accept the changes in world-building and timeline between books as creative decisions that are a bit annoying, but these editing problems are unprofessional and Leigh owes her readers more.

One of the most frustrating parts of `Lion's Heat', is that it gives readers a glimpse of how good Leigh can be. The first and last few chapters feel like they come from a different book than the rest. The writing style is completely different; they are well written, the plot is exciting, and the characters (unlike in the rest of the book) are interesting. The skill shown in those sections demonstrate why I've found it so hard to give up on Leigh. If you read nothing else, do read those sections; they are fantastic, if it were possible to rate chapter by chapter I would give them 5 stars.

In the end, the hints we get about future books with Styx, Ely, Dane, Cassie, David, and Amber, are enough of a reason for the most ardent fans to read `Lion's Heat', but I recommend starting with lowered expectations.

This is what I've been waiting for?

SYNOPSIS:
Brandenmore is the evil scientist who happens to be the worst nightmare enemy of the Breeds. He knows that the aging process practically stops once a mating has taken place. It happens to human and Breed alike. He is fanatical in his efforts to come up with an anti-aging serum. Now he has kidnapped Amber, the 4 month old baby of Rachel Broen the assistant to Jonas Wyatt, Director of the Bureau of Breed Affairs. The moment Rachel walked into his office Jonas knew she was the one woman in the world intended to be his mate. Unfortunately for Jonas, Rachel hasn't shown any interest in him at all. Now the only important thing is to get Amber back before Brandenmore does something unspeakable to her.

OPINION:
This is what I waited all this time for? As I began to open this book I had a really strong desire to write a list of what I was afraid would be in the book based on the last many Breed books in this series. I did not write that list. I should have because I would have been right. How sad! To those of us who have been with the Breeds series from the beginning the story featuring Jonas was supposed to be something special. Sorry, didn't happen here.

How many times now have we been through the dance/party/political gathering/ which featured THE DRESS which was chosen by the man to be worn by the female who didn't want to attend the party? How many times was he so aroused by the sight of her in that dress that he satisfied HER sexual frustration (whether or not she was feeling sexually frustrated) but not his own? And she always let him? How many times have we been through the exact same sex scenes but just changed the names of the two people? How many times for a male to say I.Love.You.I.Live.For.You, only to have the female character think to herself that he could never love her? This book is riddled with editorial miscues; Rachel and Jonas talking on the front porch of the cabin then Rachel and Merinus talking ABOUT Jonas on that same front porch without the author ever moving Jonas out of the scene, the sex scene that started in the afternoon with the babysitter watching the baby and then they wake up and its morning. The levitating baby from the car to the house. The fireplace which magically becomes a double sided fireplace late in the book. The message to Rachel's sister which is their code for "HELP", but which is never once mentioned again. Words left out of sentences, awkward sentence structure. Page 313, this line all by itself, "There was still had time." What? I could actually go on. And even on some more. My point is this: If I had been really engaged by this book and really enjoying it, would I have noticed and been ticked off by all these mistakes?

I realize that I haven't spoken about the plot of this book except in a rather oblique way. I'm sorry about that, but I'm sure there will be many other reviews which will touch on that aspect of this book. I do want to say that I was left with a very strong "cliffhanger" feeling simply because so many questions were left unanswered.

RECOMMENDATION:
Now this is a hard one. I'm glad I read it because now I can happily go away from this series and it won't bother me one bit. There are no other characters I'm interested in, none that I want to read a story for. Somewhere along the way this series turned into a cookie cutter. I don't like that. If you want to read this book, please do. Personally I think you should read the first four or five, find characters you especially like and concentrate on the books dealing with them. I just have to tell you that the books are very uneven in their quality. This should have been a blockbuster because we have all wanted to read what made Jonas the way he was. For me, it reaffirmed my feeling that it is time for me to move on.

This is the end of the line for me

Like many others, I've been an avid fan of the breeds and looking forward to Jonas's book. After reading Bengals Heart, I should have known it was bound to be a disappointment. I'd like to give a plot summary of the book but I had a hard time reading it because of all the editing mistakes. And not just wrong word choices or a misplaced commas but the characters doing complete about faces of what they just previously said. Rachel knows nothing about the mating heat and then a few pages later she suddenly has known about it for years and that's just one example out of about one hundred. It feels like a rough draft of the book that accidentally got printed. The mistakes were so numerous and obvious that I was disgusted with the publisher and the author. If the author doesn't care enough to do a simple read through of the book and remember what she had her characters doing, as the reader how am I suppose to care about the characters? I think this book is just a sad example of the publisher and author producing low quality product knowing it doesn't matter because it will sell based on the name alone. As a reader I feel cheated and disappointed. I no longer will be buying any books from this author.

Koop makes the mistake of becoming a little too obsessed with a potential victim and thus leaves a trail that Davenport and his fellow officers finally discover. Despite its length, Night Prey is a tight, fast-moving thriller with appealing good guys and a suitably evil villain. Especially fascinating among the characters is Policewoman Connell, who is dying of cancer and whose fate becomes linked to Koop's in the spectacular climax. Buy wherever thrillers are read.

Sandford's sixth "Prey" novel follows the same formula as the first five: sharp-tongued Minneapolis deputy police chief Lucas Davenport is on the trail of a serial killer--this time a particularly nasty specimen with a yen for disemboweling his victims. Meagan Connell, an investigator from a state agency, plays the de rigueur role of Davenport's feisty, determined female assistant. Davenport is also peripherally involved in a case that appears to involve the Seeds, a loosely organized group of white supremacists. The third-person narration takes the reader along with the serial killer as he makes his rounds, choosing and stalking his victims. Alternately, the narrative follows the victims and the investigators. There is no mystery here; the killer's identity is clear from page one. The suspense lies in the investigation. Will Davenport and Connell catch the killer before he gets that one, last, innocent victim? Yes, the plotting seems lifted from dozens of interchangeable slasher flicks, but the dialogue crackles and individual scenes can be almost unbearably suspenseful. Near Perfection (A Grade)

The Forbidden Rose is where Joanna Bourne continues to amaze with her thought out, somewhat complex plots and characters who will take a beating and even after all the danger and life threatening action that comes their way, they refuse to be down for the count and live to fight another day. If there is such a thing as swashbuckling spies, I would say Joanna has placed her claim on it.

Marguerite de Fleurignac has been hiding in the French countryside where her family's chateau has burned to the ground. As a noblewoman, she must be careful because she is being hunted by those who want to kill her. These are important members responsible for the revolution who arrest anyone for any reason and send to the guillotine to die. Marguerite has just cause for concern, because she and her ex-lover, Jean-Paul, who is the son of the botanist of the Royal Gardens, are part of an underground network called la Fleche, where they help smuggle émigrés across the channel and into England. Marguerite's father is a mad genius hiding in Paris and is also being hunted by a select group of individuals because he maybe responsible for a group of assassinations in England.

Guillaume LeBreton, and his twelve-year old servant boy Adrian Hawker, come across Marguerite and basically hold her hostage for her own safe keeping. She lies and tells them she is Maggie Duran, a former governess. Guillaume is actually an English spy by the name of William Doyle who works for the British Service and has been sent on a mission to find Maggie's father. He knows who Maggie is as soon as they meet and will gain her trust and protect her from the men who work for her cousin Victor de Fleurignac, a very high ranking official and a close friend of the bloodthirsty and righteous Robespierre. Maggie is wary of this LeBreton, who is very large, hulking, and has a long wicked scar on his cheek. But in order to arrive safely in Paris, she needs the protection and looks to Guillaume to help her, although she acts as if she doesn't need his aid. He is more than willing to help because this way Maggie will lead him to her father.

As Maggie, Doyle and Hawker travel the dangerous roads to Paris, and then enter the city where one wrong move can get them kill, they are unaware that there are others watching them closely who may or may not want them dead. Maggie can't help but succumb to her passions for Gillaume, who is definitely not what he seems. They try their best to find a small piece of happiness in one another arms, but the horrors of the revolution may keep them apart forever.

Joanna Bourne has such an amazing skill at writing strong characters, descriptive settings, including a mature and passionate love story. She uses a great amount of historical research to have penned an amazing book such as The Forbidden Rose. Readers of Ms. Bourne's past books have met Maggie and Doyle before in The Spymaster's Lady. The Forbidden Rose is a prequel and the story of how Maggie and Doyle first met met. Not only do we see how France was full of unrest during the time of the revolution, but how no one can trust anyone, not even the children. This is especially shown with Doyle's young charge, Adrian Hawkins, who also has made quiet an impression in the two books that were released prior to The Forbidden Rose. As an adult first showcased in The Spymaster's Lady and briefly in My Lord and Spymaster, he made a big impression and does even more so in The Forbidden Rose. He is one such character that you can't help but be in awe of at such a young age, including his adversary, Justine, a young girl close to his age, who lives in a brothel and works in some capacity to lend aid to Maggie's cause.

Ms. Bourne's way with words, dialogue and deep devotion and love Maggie and Doyle have for one another will blow you away. Maggie and Doyle's passion for one another at times is rushed, but that doesn't take away from the bond and attachment they build, where they would die for one another if that ever came to pass.

The Forbidden Rose is a fiery and near all consuming tale filled with suspense and wonderful insights on the human psyche. This is one historical romance that is a must read and proves yet again how masterful of a writer Joanna Bourne has become.

Read this 1st in the Spymaster Series!

For those who haven't yet read THE SPYMASTER'S LADY or MY LORD AND SPYMASTER, you should know this book comes first in time--it is a "prequel." Unfortunately it was written later so for those of us already fans to the series, we knew how it ended before it began as this is Doyle's and Maggie's story (and they are in the other books but later in time).

Set in 1794 in France, it's a great tale of English spies and French undercover work transporting royalists out of France during the time of the French Revolution and Robespierre. Marguerite is a wonderful young woman who, though raised as an aristocrat, has adapted to the times and is now doing important work that has her wearing many faces. British agent Doyle is after her father who he believes has provided names of English to be murdered by those in control of France. When he realizes he has taken the man's daughter, he keeps her, hoping she'll lead him to her father. Doyle has never allowed himself to get involved with a woman in the field. Ah, but Marguerite de Fleurignac aka Maggie is no ordinary woman! He gets aroused just looking at her and he admires her intelligence and fierce determination. He wants her for his own.

Bourne gives us another strong heroine and another drool-worthy hero. In an interview I did of her on my blog, she siad that Doyle is her favorite character and that this is her best work. I loved it.

Doyle, who is in the background in the other books, is now center stage. The dialog is very witty and at times very humorous. Bourne has mastered the art of suspense and her language is very colorful and fits well the era. Meticulously researched, as always, Bourne delivers up a detailed well-told tale. I liked this romance as well as MY LORD AND SPYMASTER and EVEN better than THE SPYMASTER'S LADY, but I recommend reading all in the series (THE BLACK HAWK, which won the RITA in 2012, is quite wonderful!). Just read this one first!

Hands down the best book Bourne has ever written

At least for me it is. It should be noted that while it's technically the first book in the series, it was written third.

Twists and turns and daring-do; brilliant characters, outstanding language and writing.

If you're iffy on buying the book and have a Kindle or one of the Kindle For apps, please just download the sample. Love it and know that it gets even better.

AND is actually is an historical novel, not just some book that happens to take place during a certain period in history.
