Read Evan Wright's posts on the Penguin Blog.

The New York Times bestselling author of Generation Kill immerses himself in even more cultures on the edge.

Evan Wright's affinity for outsiders has inspired this deeply personal journey through what he calls "the lost tribes of America." A collection of previously published pieces, Hella Nation delivers provocative accounts of sex workers in Porn Valley, a Hollywood über-agent-turned-war documentarian and hero of America's far right, runaway teens earning corporate dollars as skateboard pitchmen, radical anarchists plotting the overthrow of corporate America, and young American troops on the hunt for terrorists in the combat zones of the Middle East

From Publishers Weekly
Rolling Stone writer Wright (Generation Kill), offers 12 tales of outsiders, people more or less living off the grid in mainstream America. He profiles, for example, a member of Delta Company in Kandahar in southeastern Afghanistan dueling with the Taliban; a fun-loving regular at a dance hall; a committed local anarchist engaging in street theater at a global trade conference; a pastor of the Aryan Nation preaching against the evils of blacks and Jews and other nonwhite mud people; and two HIV-infected former porn stars. As a former editor of Hustler magazine, Wright recognizes the magic in Seth Warshavsky, a con man with a mind full of schemes in the porn world of bartered desire. There is some top-drawer writing among weaker essays, but the total effect reflects a literary rebel who wants to break convention. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Readers of Generation Kill (2004), which recounted Wright’s experiences as an embedded reporter in Iraq, will definitely want to pick up this hugely entertaining book. So will fans of first-person journalism of the sort practiced by Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe. These previously published essays are funny, mesmerizing, frightening, and mind-boggling (sometimes all in the same essay). Wright profiles, among others, an Internet fraudster, an anarchist, a neo-Nazi preacher, an eccentric Hollywood agent turned documentarian, and an ultimate fighter. Wright, who cut his journalistic teeth as the entertainment editor for Hustler, is an engaging storyteller who writes nonfiction with the eye and voice of a novelist. Seemingly—and commendably—uninterested in run-of-the-mill, just-the-facts magazine profiles, Wright instead offers up fully textured portraits of his subjects, detailed pictures in words. He tells us not just what they say, but who they are, and (as much as possible) why they are the way they are. Gonzo journalism lives. --David Pitt

The Lost Tribes of America
By Viviane Crystal
What's it like to be the oddball, the type of "out of the box" person or group that most people pretend to admire - from a distance in reality? What makes such folks tick? And whether or not one judges with the terms dysfunctional, weird, strange, etc., etc., shouldn't one understand these outsiders since the world is full of same? Evan Wright, who previously wrote for "The Hustler" magazine and "Rolling Stone" newspaper brings the reader into the world of men and woman who have a very definite but different outlook on the American Dream.

The author introduces the reader to his own evolution from a rebel using drugs to cope with reality into a sober, reflective person seeking to pen his explorations of what he calls a "tour of the Lost Tribes of America. Therefore, the reader is surprised that the opening account concerns American troops serving in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold in southeastern Afghanistan. The area is a veritable dust storm waiting to happen and one gets an uncensored glimpse into the grinding, tense yet mundane atmosphere these soldiers endure daily, fantasizing and teasing newbies about the happy meals one can get in a nearby village and coping with unremitting sexual tension, fear of being killed and spurts of total inactivity.

The scene then shifts to the world of a professional skateboarder, a daredevil who performs his most dangerous stunts when totally drunk but someone who makes a fortune in this field while claiming to reject most acceptable values and occupations. We continue to meet similar yet different characters, taxi-dance hall girls occupied by would-be fantasy partners, radical protestors with the best of intentions carried out with the most destructive possible means, neo-Nazi groups seriously believing in anti-everything-but-white living, con artists, porn professionals and so much more that defies one's most imaginative moments.

Hella Nation raises more questions than it answers. It stretches the reader's definition from what is acceptable to offer a portrait of men and women who find satisfaction and purpose in unique situations that are rather dark, disturbing, frightening, sometimes funny in a skewed fashion, deceptive, laid back, sacred and profane. In a sense, Hella Nation defies description and in that goal Evan Wright has succeeded in presenting another side of America! The conclusion is yours!

compelling collection of reports from Americans swimming against the mainstream
By Nicholas Nahat
"Hella Nation" is an essential collection of previously-published essays about the 'other' Americas out there which exist beyond the dominant paradigm, "mainstream" America, and its variations. It's not a particularly pretty picture, which is probably why the mainstream is so mainstream. Wright's best gift is for deadpan description and the selection of telling detail or quote, like:

"This is Mike calling from Cleveland," a voice crackles over the speakers with a queasy, adolescent timbre that brings to mind pimples and a uniform spattered in deep-fryer grease. "I just wanted to say you guys rock!"

These Americas are a bit skewed. Largely, they are all about different white Americas, and, excepting perhaps the San Francisco lawyers, fit neatly in the middle to lower-middle class demographic. But, you write what you know about.

The material is often dated, since the essays have been published previously, some, quite some time ago. It would have been a great strategy to invest some time in 'updates' as to the characters and their projects. As it is, I was curious and invested enough in these stories to do my own legwork on Wikipedia to find out the current fates of UFC champ Tito Ortiz and San Francisco attorney-cum-Aryan Nation prisoner adopter Marjorie Knoller.

The essays are generally tied together with the idea of presenting different sub cultures of America existing outside the mainstream, like neo Nazis or environmental anarchists. However, a few of the stories are just idiosyncratic and lurid, like the Diane Whipple murder, or portrait of the techie con artist Seth Warshavsky.

The stories of many of these characters and incidents can be strangely unsatisfying, perhaps in part because they each lack a coda. Wright is clearly influenced by "Annales" historians, who were "supremely uninterested in arriving at a unified theory of anything." Wright quotes a professor he admired who would say what matters "is the investigation, not the outcome." As such, the essays often just sort of have the effect of describing information, and stopping at a point that is often arbitrary. He takes us on tour with Motley Crue from Cleveland to New York, and then things just stop, as if maybe the per diem bankroll from Rolling Stone just dried up. The mind generally likes a story, and these 'accounts' can be resistant to the usual satisfactions of a beginning, a middle, and an end. Also, although Wright does an admirable good job of generally just letting the (carefully selected) facts speak for themselves, he does sneak in an occasional editorial idea, which can slightly detract from the overall effect.

The most personal essay involves the porn industry, where Wright was an entertainment editor. In a 'just the facts ma'am' manner, he describes his own involvement through anecdotes, in an exercise that sometimes feels like a therapist told him to keep a journal. "The persona had merged with the person, and I found truth in my own mean-spirited Hustler copy." Ultimately, Wright is his own poignant, alternate story, in a compelling collection of like-spirited personalities.

The Ultimate Cool
By MZ
Hella Nation by Evan Wright
A collection of essays from Rolling Stone and other magazines, the book is about subcultures and social misfits, weird outliers who are fascinating and sometimes frightening in their weirdness. With the courage of a war correspondent, Wright places himself in harm's way to get stories like one about American skinheads; or a Hollywood producer gone over the edge with drugs and rightwing craziness who is just cagey enough to hold onto a few famous contacts; or, most chilling, a story about the intersection of Russian killers and a deadly white-collar criminal. He once worked as an editor at Hustler magazine and writes a hilarious yet sympathetic story about the porn industry with pitch-perfect dialogue. As a top-notch reporter and writer, Wright lets the scenes and people speak for themselves: comical, graphic, and immediate. Even though the stories have been compared to Gonzo journalism, Wright does not inject himself into the story; but renders his subjects with sympathy and objectivity. He comments that the people he covers, far from being society's outcasts, "gravitated to subcultures because they didn't want to participate in the dominant culture."
My favorite piece was the Introduction itself, in which he writes about the impulse behind this book. Wright endured years of alcoholism and substance abuse, but remained a student of the world and an intellectual with a keen and curious mind and a caring soul. "...The more I learned about man's inhumanity to man, the more I was afflicted with intense bouts of sadness, no matter how remote humankind's injustices were in space and time." In his refusal to posture or interject himself in these bold stories, Wright attains the ultimate cool.

"This book is about succeeding—and surviving—even being happy, in a society where every card seems stacked against you. If this is a fair world, Bebe Moore Campbell will be remembered as the most important African-American novelist of this century—except for, maybe, Ralph Ellison and James Baldwin."—Carolyn See, Washington Post Book Review

From Publishers Weekly
Further demonstrating the authoritative grasp of racial issues and the candid picture of African American life she brought to her first novel, Your Blues Ain't Like Mine , Campbell sets this story in Los Angeles during the aftermath of the Rodney King beating, the acquittal of the charged policemen and the subsequent riots. Her heroine, Esther Jackson--seemingly self-confident but quiveringly intense--has a good position as regional operations manager of a bank. Raised on Chicago's South Side, Esther has glass-ceilinged her way to a two-bedroom house in an L.A. suburb. But along with her success, Esther carries the contradictory burdens of compromise, determination and humiliation required of women of color who move up the corporate ladder. Campbell develops Esther's character by depicting her relationship with Tyrone, a man educationally, socially and economically "beneath" her; her growing friendship with white loan officer Mallory Post; the accusations surrounding her African American boss Humphrey's attempted rape of Mallory; the suspicions that her hiree, La Keesha, is stealing from inactive accounts at the bank. Esther learns about watching her own back while responding to the needs and realities of her friends' lives. Campbell's intriguing (if not always three-dimensional) cast of characters reveal the fears and hopes of people caught in a web of shrinking opportunities and institutionalized stereotypes of race, class and gender. Adroitly using the great racial divide of Los Angeles, this absorbing novel explores the intricacies of experience, knowledge and bias which perpetuate inequalities and segregated lives. 100,000 first printing; $150,000 ad/promo; first serial to Essence; audio rights to Audio Renaissance; BOMC and QPB main selections; author tour.

From School Library Journal
YA?Brothers and sisters mostly refer to those of African American heritage, although this book will appeal to a wide audience. Focused around corporate banking in L.A., the story is about company relationships and people of color wanting to advance to positions they believe they have earned. Attractive, well-educated Esther Jackson, a manager, has a great deal of resentment toward privileged white men and women who she feels have an easier climb up the ladder of success. Still, she becomes close to her coworker, Mallory, who is white. Esther is also looking for Mr. Right, who must possess plenty of cash and credit cards, thus eliminating mail deliverer Tyrone, who adores her. Things get complicated when a new black employee appears to be Mr. Right?until he is more attracted to Mallory. False accusations of sexual harassment and theft are a large part of the story. Readers won't want to put this book down until the injustices are resolved. This novel is contemporary, with allusions to the atmosphere following the Rodney King incident and the L.A. riots.?Ginny Ryder, Lee High School, Springfield, VA

Racial differences
By Beverley Strong
Esther Jackson is a strikingly beautiful black woman, well educated who, by sheer hard work and determination, has forged herself a place in the upper eschelon of the banking world. She is striving to become a loans officer, knowing that she has the ability to go all the way to the top of her profession but being held back by the glass ceiling which stalls women and black women in particular. Her unlikely friend is a blonde, beautiful Valley girl who has had all the advantages of a wealthy background but lacks the one thing she craves, the love of her father. She has been trying to compensate for this lack with a series of affairs with older, successful married men, only to be rejected time and time again. Their story and the story of their friendship which struggles almost daily to overcome the differences in their cultures, is a most interesting one, with prejudices of both races coming to the fore...I dound it to be most illuminating.

Modern Day Morality Play
By NappyGirl
If this novel is any indication of Bebe Moore Campbell's talent, I think she's bound for an exciting and prolific career. Set in L.A. in the aftermath of the infamous Rodney King verdict, BROTHERS AND SISTERS introduces the reader to a banking world filled with interesting and complex characters both Black and White. Campbell has an excellent ability to traverse modern day racial complexities in a manner which is neither unrealistic nor condescending. Any Black female professional is bound to identify with the struggles and situations that Ester faces in the book: trust issues with White co-workers, dating a blue-collar man, walking the colorline, and maintaining personal dignity in a workspace where nobody looks like you. I found the novel to be enjoyable and insightful. It's perfect reading for a long plane ride.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS
By Mary Allen
BROTHERS AND SISTERS is an excellent book with a beautiful, thought-provoking cover. The main character, Esther, walks a fine line to maintain respect and professionism as an African American bank manager, working in a predominantly white bank. She must must make several choices between colorless friendship and Black loyalty and between haves and have nots. In her personal life, she must make the choice between white-collar and blue-collar love. BROTHERS AND SISTERS shows the deceitful routes some people will take to reach their goal, not caring who is run over. This book also looks at how little things have changed between the races and the sexes, but in contrast, it shows rarely-seen truiumph over injustice. The well-rounded cast of characters make this book realistic and believable. Bebe Moore Campbell is a very good writer.

This is part of the Psy-Changeling series that Nalini writes about. Changelings are humans that can turn into an animal form and the Psy's have special extra sensory skills. This story was lighthearted and romantic. I have yet to read the Psy-changeling series and this story reminded me that I need to do that. I loved the characters and the paranormal aspects were written so they were totally believable.

Christmas Bree by Erin McCarthy - Bree Murphy is a witch living in the old Victorian home her Grandmother left her. While visiting with her witch sisters, Charlotte and Abby, Abby predicts that a man wearing a pink shirt will turn up at Bree's door with passion on his mind. When the doorbell rings, Bree finds Ian, a lawyer she met one year ago... and he's wearing a pink shirt.

This story is about the Magickal Murphy Sisters, centering on Bree, a story started in the anthology An Enchanted Season that centered on Charlotte. Erin McCarthy is the reason I bought this book and her story didn't disappoint me in the least. The Murphy sisters are colorful, the story is magical and the sex steamy. I can't wait to read Abby's story next.

Sweet Dreams by Linda Winstead Jones - An extremely old curse threatens the life and soul of a single woman named Ruby. Weird dreams plague her and just when she's starting to trust the sexy professor, Zane, from across the street, she is warned to trust no one.

This is the only story I didn't like. A lot of things aren't made clear, like Zane's extreme dislike for refined sugar and flour... which was just a weird thing to put into the story in the first place. The story was really dark for a Christmas tale and the hero was extremely rude and unlikable at first. I just didn't care for it.

Christmas Heat by Lora Leigh - In a world where humans were genetically altered with the DNA of certain predatory cats and trained and created for the purposes of killing. Those creations, called Breed's, have stepped away from that and our desperately trying to regain control of their breeds and live normal lives. One librarian overhears a discussion that could destroy the progress and her life becomes endangered as she is set to testify.

A sexy little tale about a Jaguar Breed and the librarian he covets and is sent t protect. As he is forced to live under her roof, the attraction the both of them have been feeling since they first met a year ago, is becoming harder an harder to ignore. This story was unique and the way she blended the male and the Jaguar instincts and desires were creative and hot. I enjoyed this story a lot.

I really enjoyed this anthology. Had it not been for the third story it easily would have been a five star book. The other three stories while short were sweet, sexy, filled with the Christmas spirit and extremely entertaining.

I loved 3 out of the 4 stories. They are innovative, compelling, intriquing, and spellbinding. This is a must read for all of Christine Feehan's fans. Stroke of Enticement by Nalini Singh, was an interesting way to view the future of earth. Psychics vs Humans, hmm? Sweet Dreams by Linda Winstead Jones, talk about a scary ghost story! Boy,I couldn't put the book down till I was done, and I don't like scary stories, but this one was well written. Last but not least Christmas Heat by Lora Leigh also just as riveting. Similar to Nalini Singh's story, but with definite differences. This story moves quickly filled with lots of passion, and Heat! I now have 3 new writers to shop for, great job guys.

Don't Wait - Definitely DO Open Before Christmas
By melindeeloo
If you are a fan of Nalini Singh's Psy-changelings or Lora Leigh's Breeds, you will not want to miss The Magical Christmas Cat, both of authors' stories were simply terrific romances and either one of them make this book worth your hard earned cash. But wait there's more, for no additional cost, you get a `dreamy' witchy romance by Erin McCarthy and a fantasy tale `to die for' from Linda Winstead Jones.

My favorite of the bunch was Nalini Singh's "Stroke of Enticement", I love all of her shapeshifter males, but DarkRiver leopard-shifter Zach was truly wonderful. Not weighed down by the emotion baggage of Singh's last couple of predatory males, Zach is still intense, determined and possesive but Zach's playful courtship of human teacher Annie makes this romance fun as well as steamy, I just loved this story. (5 stars that will make you purr)

In Erin McCarthy's "Christmas Bree", the romantic magic of bespelled mistletoe, strikes again. This time witchy middle sister gets the man of her dreams, literally. The dreams that the unlikely pair have shared during the past year provide the jump to lightspeed necessary to connect the pair immediately when they meet again in the flesh, so that this ends up being an enjoyable romantic addition to the collection. (This ties in to "Charlotte's Web" fromAn Enchanted Season and sets up for a story for sister #3 too.)(4 Stars for the magic of mistletoe)

And now for something completely different, much milder from a romance standpoint than the rest of the stories, Linda Winstead Jones, instead focuses on her characters and, gasp, her plot. She fits an amazing amount of story, into her "Sweet Dreams", including world-building and back history. She also gives us a great leading lady in baker Ruby, who manages to get past her disbelief of all things woo-woo to gain the knowledge necessary to save herself, with a little help from the her oh so serious sugar deprived neighbor and the 'cavalry'. (4 stars for death by chocolate cake)

Finally, Lora Leigh's addition was so scorchingly hot, that smoke came off the pages. I don't tend to read romantica, strong erotic language doesn't do it for me, so I don't follow Leigh's Breeds novels, though I've enjoyed the last couple of novellas she contributed to anthologies like these. But language issues aside, "Christmas Heat" has to have one of the best tension building setups I've read in a short story ( and in most novels as well) culminating in a page burning scene with Breed Noble trying to hold his inner cat in check to avoid forcing the mating heat on Haley even as she pushes him past the brink of his self-control. (cold showers anyone?) For Leigh fans - this one apparently 'spoilerishly' wraps up some loose ends from Mercury's war. (5 stars going supernova)

I know that not everyone likes anthologies as much as I do, but these stories are well worth making an exception. All the authors, manage to fit an amazing amount of story, and/or steam into their enjoyable contributions, and for those of you not already familiar with the authors you don't need to be to enjoy these stories - all work perfectly fine as standalones. So check out Magical Christmas Cat, for a bunch tasty Christmas treats from these popular authors.

Bed of Roses (The Bride Quartet, Book 2), by Nora Roberts

Love blooms in the second novel in Nora Roberts's celebrated Bride Quartet series.

As little girls MacKensie, Emma, Laurel, and Parker spent hours acting out their perfect make believe "I do" moments. Years later their fantasies become reality when they start their own wedding planning company to make every woman's dream day come true. With perfect flowers, delicious desserts, and joyful moments captured on film, Nora Roberts's Bride Quartet shares each woman's emotionally magical journey to romance.

In Bed of Roses, florist Emma Grant is finding career success with her friends at Vows wedding planning company, and her love life appears to be thriving. Though men swarm around her, she still hasn't found Mr. Right. And the last place she's looking is right under her nose.

But that's just where Jack Cooke is. He's so close to the women of Vows that he's practically family, but the architect has begun to admit to himself that his feelings for Emma have developed into much more than friendship. When Emma returns his passion—kiss for blistering kiss—they must trust in their history…and in their hearts.

From Publishers Weekly
In her second bridal-themed romance about four friends who run Vows, a Greenwich, Conn., wedding planning business, Roberts focuses on Emma Grant while her partners, MacKensie, Parker and Laurel, play supporting roles. In the first installment of this planned quartet, Vows' bridal photographer got engaged, and now florist Emma wonders if she can find true love with old friend Jack Cooke, who is also very close to Emma's associates. When Emma kisses Jack, her spark-o-meter melts from the blazing heat, but their romance's setbacks are smoothed out with a little help from their friends. Though there are few surprises in this cute courtship, those with a TiVo full of Bridezillas should enjoy it, thanks largely to Roberts's effortless wit. (Oct.)

One of the most beautiful books I've read in a long time
By Katzenjammer123
If you are looking for a classic romance with only a little bit of drama and lots of love, friendship and fun, then "Bed of Roses" will be a perfect choice.

Emmaline Grant's job is all about creating the perfect wedding day. As a florist and partner of "Vows" she is living her dream. She believes in love and hopes to someday have the kind of relationship her parents share. But she still hasn't found the one man with whom she wants to dance in the moonlight.
When suddenly the relationship to commitment shy architect Jack Cooke changes and they realize that there is more between them then just being good friends, Emma is excited but also a little bit afraid. She doesn't want to loose Jack as a friend but can't say no to the new path their relationship is going. Because she soon realizes that Jack has some flaws (he's a man so that's to be excepted) but that he also might be just perfect for her.

Wonderful characters, a beautiful story that concentrates on love and friendship and Nora Robert's love for details makes this the perfect book to forget everyday life.
Emma is a great heroine even though in real life it's hard not to hate a woman like her. She's beautiful, outgoing, intelligent, loves her life and job, has the best friends you can imagine and her parents are the perfect couple. But because she is also very kind and funny you just have to love her (I guess some envy is ok). Through the detailed description of her work (it's like the bouquets and arrangements are right in front of you) the reader can share the enthusiasm and love for her work and get's a close connection to Emma.
Jack is a man of action who's sexy and very manly. He enjoys his life as much as possible and works as hard as he plays. Commitment is not something he likes to think about because of the doubts his parents divorce left him with. So it's clear that in a relationship with Emma, who believes in love and marriage, there has to be some trouble (but thank god not too much).
His relationship with Emma is kind of sweet because even though they have been friends for years, as lovers there's a lot to learn and discover.
What I also enjoyed is how Jack and Del have to work through some issues because of Emma. Del is very protective of his girls and extremely sceptical about their guys and Jack is no exception. The scenes between Del and Jack add a lot to the book and make me also very excited to read more of Del.
The drama and confusion at the turning point of Emma's and Jack's relationship is just right and I love how the four friends (plus Carter) stick together to support Emma.
Carter has some awesome scenes (all I can say is playing poker with the guys) and the relationship between Mac and him is another highlight of the book.

So all in all I absolutly love "Bed of Roses" and can't wait for the next two books in the series.

Spoiler!!!
Especially because now it's clear that Laurel and Del and Parker and Mal will be starring in the next two books. Laurel has been my favourite so far and after reading the excerpt for "Savour the Moment" (coming April 2010) I can't wait to learn more about her and Del. Parker's and Mal's first meeting is so hilarious and makes me excited for book four "Happy ever after" (coming December 2010).

Not up to Nora's usual standards
By Deborah V
After finding Vision in White (The Wedding Quartet, Book 1) a disappointment, I was hoping Bed of Roses would be much better--it was better, but not by much.

One element that makes a romance book interesting is the introduction of conflict. Emma and Jack had chemistry in this book unlike Mac and Carter in Visions. But, the conflict seemed contrived. Emma and Jack realize after a lifetime of friendship that there is something more there. Emma comes from a happy family and Jack comes from a divorced set of parents. Jack is afraid of commitment and Emma wants it all. The reader can tell right from the beginning that Jack is going to get cold feet, break Emma's heart for a few weeks and then we have the happy ever after resolution.

(Possible spoiler) I felt the last scenes in the book were very contrived as every one decided to shut out Jack. Here is a group of people--men and women who have been friends for decades and they rally around Emma and shut Jack out in the cold? Give me a break. Yes Emma deserved some sympathy, but everyone knew Jack and knew his issues and no one stood for him? Although this isn't a very romantic statement, I think if I were Jack, I might want to find a more loyal group of friends instead of this crew who spurn him and figure he is wrong without even giving him a hearing!

This is an easy read, but lacks the power of some of Robert's other straight romances. Personally, I find the Donovans, the Calhouns, the Chesapeake series, the Key trilogy, and Garden triology books to be much better overall in presenting the romantic element. All of them are sweet romances with nice character development like Bed of Roses (Bride Quartet), but in my opinion the romances are better developed and there is a hint of conflict and when it does occur it plays out much better (for instance Morgana Donovan and Nash or the O'Hurley triplets).

Very enjoyable
By Shala Kerrigan
Jessie is a lot of fun. I really enjoyed Wicked Weaves so decided to give this one a try too.
Jessie is a college professor working on a paper about crafts during the renaissance, and she's learning them as she goes by apprenticing to different craftspeople at a renaissance village which is like an ongoing permanent faire. She's 6 foot tall, doesn't like to be called girl and can't resist a challenge.
In this book, she's apprenticed to a very cranky glassblower with a son who thinks he's a gift to all women, it's Halloween in the village, and everyone has to go along with it, dressing the part as witches or wraiths.
When Death turns up dead and strange graffiti starts turning up everywhere in the village, everybody is on edge. Then it starts to look like Jessie and her boss are being targeted by the killer, and to make matters worse, the police are threatening to shut down the village.
Jessie is a great character, she's smart and strong, but clumsy and more than a bit neurotic. Her bf, the very stable and handsome baliff of the village is trying to solve the crime, and Jessie is as well. At times, it's laugh out loud funny as Jessie winds up in one ridiculous situation after another.
It's just a great escapist cozy mystery read.

Loved this Renaissance themed mystery!
By Sassy girl
I was really surprised at how much I loved this book. I love the renaissance theme. The new plot had the faire made up for Halloween. With pirates, zombies, ghosts and even, "Death". Jessie and her boyfriend Chase, have a full time job trying out who harmed who, in this mystery. Jessie learns all about glass blowing, which was really interesting to me. I can honestly say.. read this cozy mystery.
I really liked the characters and the crazy pirates who kept me in stitches. Banshee and all.
The first book in this series was called, "Wicked Weaves".
This book to me, was even better than the first book.
I am so glad I took a chance and read the Lavene's second mystery.
They redeemed my faith in their story ability. Kudos to them both.

exciting amateur sleuth
By A Customer
Renaissance Village in Myrtle Beach is for the first time in history is decorated to look like the Faire is Halloween. Renaissance reveler Jessie Morton is apprenticing under various master craftsmen to obtain research for her dissertation Proliferation of Renaissance Crafts in Modern Times. This year she is being trained by Roger Trent, owner and glassblower of the Glass Gryphon. She is also reunited with Chase.

The strong but gentle giant Ross plays Death and is very convincing as he looks spookily like the grim reaper. When someone kills him everyone at the faire except his killer is shocked. On his chest is a note that states "Death Will Find Thee". His brother Bart takes over the role of death. Someone is also trying to frighten Jessie. When Roger is attacked with the same message left on him as that was pinned to Ross, Jessie believes the latter's nephew stalks him. Although Henry is arrested, Jessie doubts he is the killer. Instead she believes a village resident is the culprit especially when someone else vanishes.

Jessie provides a unique look at a renaissance faire as she stumbles and tumbles into one adventure after another. Through her eyes, readers learn what happens behind the scenes and into the minds of the performers especially the revelers who relish reenactments. This is a colorful exciting amateur sleuth mystery filled with quirky characters who endear themselves to the reader as Joyce and Jim Lavene write a delightful whodunit.

Coel's 13th Wind River mystery (after 2006's The Drowning Man) is far more engaging than its bland title might suggest. The discovery of skeletal remains still bearing a long dark braid of hair opens deep wounds among the Native Americans who live on Wyoming's Wind River reservation. Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden's efforts to identify the woman, apparently a murder victim, cause tension with her love interest and law partner, Adam Lone Eagle, driving her to enlist the aid of their friend Fr. John O'Malley. A rash of threats and the murder of a woman Vicky questioned confirms her suspicions that members of a 1970s activist group, the American Indian Movement, are still on the rez and somehow involved in all the happenings. Bringing her trademark western flair to nonstop action, Coel keeps danger hanging over Vicky's head as she follows a trail of clues to their startling conclusion. (Sept.)

On the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, an animal unearths a woman's remains. The victim, it turns out, was murdered in 1973, when Native American activists came to the reservation. A group of reservation women ask attorney Vicki Holden to press the sheriff to find the killer. Immediately, threats are leveled against Vicki and her friend Father John O'Malley. The duo races to find the killer before the killer gets them. In this thirteenth Vicki Holden mystery, Coel continues to combine full-bodied characters, vivid landscapes, and snappy dialogue, and she builds suspense effectively, in terms of both resolving the main plot and answering the question of whether Father O'Malley will be reassigned to Rome. This series, with its expert use of western settings and Native American themes, remains among the best read-alikes for Tony Hillerman fans. Rowen, John

Better than I thought but predictable.
By Amazon Customer
I figured it out half way thru which is better than most of the time. The book wasn't too bad. The plot was feasible and seemed well researched. This is the only one in the series I have read and it was for book club. The writing was ok. Because I haven't read the others I didn't have any background on Vicky and the priest but I found the hints at a live thing very predictable.

From Publishers Weekly
After collaborating on Dead Heat (2007), bestseller Francis and his son, Felix, deliver another gripping thriller with a thoroughbred racing backdrop. Soon after London barrister Geoffrey Mason, an amateur jockey by avocation, starts receiving a series of threatening messages from a former client, Julian Trent, whose conviction for assault was overturned on appeal, Mason reluctantly accepts the defense of a jockey, Steve Mitchell, accused of the pitch-fork murder of fellow rider Scot Barlow at a steeplechase event. Mitchell and Barlow had fallen out over Barlow's sister, a vet and Mitchell's former girlfriend, who took her own life just a short while before. When unknown parties order Mason to lose the case, he must balance his professional ethics and his sense of self-preservation. The solid writing and engaging lead will carry readers along at a brisk pace, though some may find the dramatic courtroom revelation of the murderer overly theatrical. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Geoffrey Mason, barrister and amateur steeplechase jockey, is called on to defend an arrogant and difficult fellow rider accused of brutally murdering another jockey. Despite overwhelming evidence, Mason believes his client is innocent—and in fact is being framed.  Threats and a vicious beating make Mason more determined to persevere in the defense. British trial-procedure arcana and steeplechase-racing information enrich this engaging story. Jarvis’ reading is impeccable. Not a syllable is lost in his British-accented rendition, and his recitation of events leading up to and during the trial is a model of controlled tension. Fans will be delighted to know that coauthor Felix (Dick Francis’ son) is clearly capable of carrying on the family tradition of top-notch horse-racing mysteries. --Karen Harris

Smooth as Silk...
By Linda Holman
I was very excited when I found that this book was coming out. Since Dick Francis seemed to have stopped writing for a time, before the release of his last book written with his son, Dead Heat, I made sure that this was not a reprint.

I also made sure that I had plenty of free time, because once I pick up one of his books, I can't put it down! This one did not disappoint me.

As with his other books, the setting takes place in London and little towns nearby that feature racetracks. This story centers around the English legal system, which is fascinating to me. It has the usual main character who is a nice bloke (Geoffrey Mason) but has had some bad things happen to him. He also finds a new love interest, and fights the good fight against the evil bad guy, and good wins out in the end.

When I read this book, I felt like I was there, in the little town that was described, and that I could feel the feelings that the characters were feeling.

Even though this book stuck to Dick Francis' typical plot, it felt fresh and entertaining to me. I was actually smiling at the end, and it takes a good book to do that for me.

If you are a Dick Francis fan, I would definitely purchase this book. And, I am very happy to report that Mr. Francis' son, Felix, seems to be fully capable of having the reigns turned over to him when it becomes necessary.

Good for Francis fans, OK for others
By Jonathan A. Turner
_Silks_ is a mid-range Dick Francis novel. It delivers the usual pleasures of Dick Francis novels: a racing background, a sympathetic protagonist, a scary villain, a little romance, and an interesting backdrop. As a long-time Francis fan, I was glad to get it and enjoyed reading it. Much as I'd like to, however, I can't give it more than three stars. It has an excellent start, and a good finish, but it lags in the middle.

It doesn't take long for Geoffrey Mason, our hero, to get into frighteningly credible hot water. That's good--but then he takes an awfully long time to do anything effective about it. The middle part of the book fails to build on itself. In a thriller/mystery tale like this one, the protagonist should always be getting more information, getting closer to the bad guys, using what he's learned to push one step further. The antagonist, meanwhile, should always be expanding the scope of his nefarious doings, upping the threat level, reacting to the hero.

Neither of those things happens very much in _Silks_. Mason goes down a lot of blind alleys, and fails to uncover many new facts during his rather desultory investigations. Ultimately, he gets the information he needs via a phone call from a third party. The villain, in turn, simply repeats his original threats over and over. (Part of the trouble is that the villain, when uncovered, turns out to be a somewhat peripheral character.)

Finally, because there's no chain of revelations, Francis & Francis have to rely on a gimmick to inject surprise. In a typical mystery, we readers know what the investigator has *seen*, but not what he *thinks*. Here, Mason explains everything to the other characters in the book--but not to us. Censoring the information given to the reader is one of the weakest of authorial tricks, and in this case it happens several times.

The best part of _Silks_ is Julian Trent, the brutal thug whose trial sparks the whole chain of events. Intimidation in the justice system is a very real problem, and it's all too easy to imagine ourselves in Geoffrey Mason's situation. _Silks_ is very effective in showing how fragile that system really is.

It also delivers a good courtroom drama sequence. This has been done so often that it's something of a cliche. The Francises make this old standard deliver by actually giving an insight into a trial lawyer's mind; we get some understanding of Mason's tactics, his strategies, his worries, his analysis. The effect is to make the legal proceedings less of a circus and more of a high-stakes chess game. (It's also an amusing contrast for anyone who's a fan of Rumpole of the Bailey!)

If you're a long-time Francis fan, you'll probably enjoy _Silks_. Spending time in Francis territory is rather like visiting an old and familiar place: even if things aren't quite the way you remember, it's a pleasure to be among friends. If you're relatively new to Francis, however, you might want to start with one of his top-notch classics--_Risk_ is a personal favorite--where the pacing isn't quite so lax.
