Good book, minor detail issues
By Rosey Posey
While I love Lora Leigh and her detailed writing..sometimes I wish she could get tiny facts right. Don't get me wrong, the breed series as a whole is great..some fantastic books in the series and some not. Do I think this series has been stretched between too many books? Yes. Are some worth reading? Yes. Is this one of them? Yes. HOWEVER, I know how nit-picky I'm being on this but in rereading the book the whole "lion breeds mate for life like their cousin". Their cousin the lion? What cousin breeds for life? Lions don't breed for life. In fact most lions have a PRIDE mostly composed of FEMALES. Do we know what rival lions do? Especially if there are cubs? They fight the current male for the pride or kill him and then kill any cubs to get the female ovulating again so he can breed her. And the whole "temperatures below zero with the lions patrolling sanctuary". What? Lions out in the middle of winter in freezing conditions? Come on. African lions. I know animals acclimate to a point...but please. Don't insult our intelligence. It would be nice if authors who write books like these with "genetically enhanced humans..half man half animal" watched a documentary on the beasts they attempt to write about. Or ask an animal expert. Read a book, do research. It's little details like this that completely railroad my reading experience since I happen to be in the animal field. I give this book 3 stars. I recommend this series over Laurann Dohners only if you want lengthy books with decently, intelligently written dialogue for the most part that has good flow. Seriously if you read reviews to determine if you'll read the book? Sure go ahead and read it. It's good. It grabs you. But, it's a little pricey and has some incorrect information.
Do the math on the pricey part kindle books in this series? $7.

How many books in the series? 30.

7x30........

In the end I do recommend the book. Just know...this lady doesn't know much about animals and makes for head scratching statements that are hilarious and annoying at the same time.

Mercury's War
By mnix
Mercury Warrant was created to be one of the greatest Breeds ever to exist. Both lion and man, Mercury epitomized the Breed ideal, until the day he heard his mate - the one woman born to be his and his alone - died and the lion inside him was caged, beaten down by drugs that scientists injected into him. Though now free of the labs he was created in and one of the Breeds' most trusted enforcers, Mercury still lives with the knowledge that he will never know what it means to have a true mate. Until Ria Rodriquez shows up at the doors of Sanctuary, the Feline Breed compound, and awakens the lion within. Mercury knows the sexy little clerk isn't what she claims to be, and he's determined to uncover all her secrets.

If Ria knows one thing, it's how to blend in. Sent to discover who has been leaking Sanctuary's top secret information to an outside pharmaceutical company, Ria covers her fiery, passionate nature with drab clothes and a placid but firm demeanor. The only problem being the gorgeous Breed enforcer determined to undermine her calm façade. Ria has seen Mercury's file, knows that he has had and lost a mate, and thinks he can never truly be hers. Even so, Ria can't resist the temptation Mercury offers.

As danger mounts and threats attack the very heart of Sanctuary, both Mercury and Ria find themselves battling both for the safety of the Breeds and for the growing bond between them. But in a world where peril lurks around every corner and not everything is as it seems, can love survive?

Make sure you're sitting down, because Mercury's War is one meltingly erotic, knee-weakening thrill of a tale. Lora Leigh has delivered a luscious, sexy love story wrapped in intrigue, adventure, and romance that is guaranteed to leave you begging for more.

Mercury is not only the epitome of what a Breed is considered to be, he's the embodiment of what a hero should be. He's a deliciously strong, alpha male, with - and I really must include this - incredibly gorgeous eyes. Even more importantly, his faith in his love for Ria, no matter what his files or tests tell him, is endearing. Additionally, his acknowledgment, trust, and appreciation of Ria's own strength and intelligence are what completely won me over.

Ria, in turn, is one of my favorite of Ms. Leigh's heroines. She's tough, capable, and incredibly intelligent. She's also vulnerable and masks what she truly needs in order to protect her heart. Ria's easy to love and identify with, and it made Mercury's War all the more compelling a read because I was eager for her to find happiness with Mercury.

In addition to a great romance, Mercury's War delves further into the Breed universe. I'll forgo saying much on the subject, as it is too fun and fascinating experience the development of the world, with all the twists and turns Ms. Leigh provides. I will say that fans of the series will delight in learning more about the Vanderale family. Additionally, Jonas Wyatt fans of the world will rejoice that the Director of the Bureau of Breed Affairs not only plays a large part of the book, but that Ms. Leigh opens up the story to include sides of Jonas we have only glimpsed before now. Being on his territory, in his own mind, and dealing with his men, we get to see behind the machinations to the man beneath. As an avowed Jonas admirer, I will say that his scenes were some of my favorite in the book and I dare any detractors not to love him after reading Mercury's War.

The only thing I would wish for in this book is a little more attention to detail. There were a significant number of small discrepancies from other books in the series, and each one drew me out of the story. While it doesn't considerably detract from my overall opinion of the book, I did find them distracting enough to note.

In the end, old and new fans alike will delight in the newest addition to Ms. Leigh's wickedly sirenic series. As passionate and untamed as the lion inside him, Mercury will capture your attention and not let go; his book can do no less.

Fantastic!
By Toby
I love all the Breed books and I've been waiting for a story for Mercury. I was not disappointed at all. He's fascinating, strong, bold and HOT! I found myself curled on the couch just reading page after page. But had to read it again right after because I just didn't want it to end! The only thing I would love for Lora Leigh to do one day is contiunue with each mating story. I love the way her books end with a happy ending but always with a teaser at the end for upcoming storyline.

It is also wonderful how within each new storyline you get to find out about the others mates that you've read about before. But what would be great is if she did a continuation of each of them. Like Mercury for example, it would be wonderful if she gave us a part two. How would he react to the birth of a child, with a great mystery swirled around that - as only Lora can do. Merc, holds a special place in readers' hearts I think because he was torn between two worlds and your heart couldn't stop from breaking for him and then rejoicing in his found happiness.

I would love more and I'm sure other readers would too. Maybe Lora will give us abit more of her erotic, hilarious at times and truly heart warming take on Mercury and his adjustment to married/Fatherhood life.

From Publishers Weekly
Sefton's seventh puzzler to feature Kelly Flynn, crafty sleuth of Fort Connor, Colo., and the House of Lambspun knitters (after 2008's Fleece Navidad) finds them worrying about their friend Jennifer Stroud, who's been raped. Though Jennifer initially refuses to report the attack to the authorities, she agrees to attend a weekend workshop for women who've suffered sexual violence. Kelly and physical therapist Lisa Gerrard are teaching a fiber class for the May retreat at Lazy C Ranch, whose owner, Cal Everett, turns out to be Jennifer's assailant. When Cal's found dead, pushed over the railing of a steep deck with Jennifer's latest afghan project draped over his body, Jennifer becomes a murder suspect. Sefton skillfully handles a sensitive topic while weaving in happier moments for her amateur detectives, such as the marriage of Mimi Shafer, Lambspun's owner, and Burt Parker, a retired Fort Connor detective. From Booklist
Sefton’s latest starts out strong when Colorado CPA Kelly Flynn learns her friend Jennifer has been raped. It turns out that the rapist, Cal Everett, owns the ranch where a group of assault survivors, including Jennifer, have gathered for a weekend retreat. Not surprisingly, Cal ends the weekend dead. So are the logical suspects responsible? As in previous books, Sefton weaves yarn, fiber arts, and cooking into the mystery in ways that enhance it. Even dedicated fans will be pleased that a cast-of-characters list is included, and, as before, the patterns and recipes add appeal for the target audience. --Ilene Cooper

Not worth the price or your time
By K. Anderson
I wish I could recommend Dropped Dead Stitch. I love knitting; I love cozy mysteries; and, I loved Sefton's first few books of this series.

But, I can't recommend Dropped Dead Stitch. The mystery isn't compelling. Heck, it's not even interesting. Typically, I'm so eager to know whodunit that I turn page after page and read an entire book in one day. The mystery in Dropped Dead Stitch is so dull, I didn't care who did it.

On the plus side, Sefton tackles the difficult topic of rape with respect and sensitivity which gives the book a slightly more serious tone. Sefton also pays off one of the long-term relationships with a wedding and picks up the threads of a romance that was hinted at in Dyer Consequences. Finally, Dropped Dead Stitch drops clues that there may be trouble ahead in Kelly and Steve's relationship, perhaps even a parting of the ways due to financial strain and career goals.

But, I don't care about the characters any more. What makes characters interesting is how they deal with conflict and life changes. Sefton's characters have no conflicts or life changes. They drink coffee, eat pizza, play softball, knit, and play board games. That's no more interesting than my own life. As I read the comments from other reviewers, I see that the frequent descriptions of hum-drum daily life in Dropped Dead Stitch turn them off, too.

As a reader, when I pay hardcover prices, I expect an author to step-up the quality of their work. I'm not looking for the "great American novel," but for hardcover prices, I expect a quality mystery. Dropped Dead Stitch isn't worth the hardcover price or the time you'll spend reading it.

Just what you expect
By Beth Danielsen
I just finished reading this book and am puzzled by other reviewers responses. They all mention that the first few books in the series were good but this one was not. Frankly I am stumped. I too have read all the other books in the series and also felt they were good, not great, but good and truth be told this one is just the same as the rest. The same people, same idealic life, same unlikly senrio's, in short - same formula. That is what I expected and that is what I got. I enjoy these books as easy reads and for the feel good fellowship of the main charecters as well as the knitting lingo. I love reading other knitting fiction as well. So again, why is everyone chiming in with such negative reviews? If they expected more after already reading the earlier books, then that is their issue.

On a more positve note: I made the recipe for gingersnapes out of Fleece Navida, and they were awesome! I took them to our church Christmas caroling party and they were snorkled down in tem minutes flat with rave reviews! I highly recomend these.

Blessings, Beth Ann Danielsen

Dropped Dead Stitch
By Marilyn J. Cole
I've read several books in this series, but this one was the WORST! The writing was VERY amateur...sort of Nancy Drew meets creative writing class! Too much info not necessary to the story (decription of a game of Trivual Pursuit, description of a softball game..HO-HUM!) and the total OVER use of...tease/teased/teasing as a way to describe how someone spoke as well as the phrases...running her fingers through the Bamboo and silk yarns or just plain running her finger through the yarns!! There MUST be other words available! The book became redundant and VERY diffucult to finish...which I did only because I paid for it! Where was her editor? Or,if she had one, s/he should be fired!!!!

From Publishers Weekly
Francis has another winner, as skillfully constructed as his previous bestsellers. This time, amateur British jockey Ian Pembroke tells what happens after the murder of his father Malcolm's fifth wife, Moira. A rapacious, sharp-tongued woman, she has caused a break between Malcolm and Ian, who despised her for marrying his father solely to get her hands on his considerable fortune. But two attempts on the old man's life compel him to ask Ian for help. Although the trusted son isn't fond of his eight half-siblings or their motheror even of his ownhe's loath to suspect them of conspiring to kill Malcolm, which seems to be the case. To protect his father, Ian takes him to America and other countries, where the two attend the glamorous, big-purse horse racesscenes at which the author excelsbefore returning warily to England. The story gains momentum, with extended family members furious over Malcolm's spending spree and blaming Ian for wasting their inheritance. A real spellbinder, the mystery ends when the miscreant plays one trick too many. Reader's Digest Condensed Book selection; Literary Guild dual selection and Mystery Guild alternate.

From Library Journal
Amateur jockey Ian Pembroke is the narrator and principal mover in this engaging effort from the veteran British author. Summoned by his fabulously wealthy father, Malcolm, after a three-year estrangement, Ian attempts to discover who murdered Malcolm's money-grubbing fifth wife and who wants Malcolm dead as well. Suspects include the man's three surviving ex-wives, variously vicious or vindictive, and eight children, arrayed in darkening shades of nasty. Hidden gold, house bombs, expensive racehorses, and foreign venues spice up the familial infighting. A best bet. Literary Guild dual main selection; Mystery Guild featured alternate. REK

Too much money
By Fred Camfield
For whatever reason this novel has gone out of print. One can hope that the publisher will reprint. The main character, Malcomb Pembroke, has a knack for making money, particularly in investments in gold, and has become very wealthy (by 1987 standards, when the novel was written). The problem is the fact that he doesn't get along with his ex-wives and children. He won't increase allowances set when he was merely rich rather than filthy rich. His first three ex-wives and their seven children seem to hover about like greedy vultures waiting for him to die so they can inherit the estate. This is compounded by sibling rivalries, ex-wives poisoning their childrens' minds, and various mental attitudes. The children are furious when Malcomb starts donating money to charities and spending millions on racehorses.
The novel is an interesting whodunit as first Malcomb's fifth wife is murdered, and then attempts are made on his life. There are many people with motives, mainly in the family. His son Ian, the only child he trusts, helps unravel the mystery. The story illustrates how money can corrupt a family. While the reader can make some guesses, the ending is not obvious.

My favorite Dick Francis book
By Mad Max
I don't know why, but this one seemed to have it all. I just couldn't put it down.

Suspense, intrigue, mystery, romance... The other reviews are correct. Anything by Dick Francis is good. But I give this one an especially strong recommendation.

Mystery Solution Through Observation
By B. A Libby
Reading a Dick Francis mystery is like falling into cool water on a hot and frenzied day. I've read many of his works, and while this one does not live up to his most brilliant, Banker, and Reflex, it is a classic, solid, Francis mystery. His main character falls into the familiar Francis mold; observing the world, not prone to effusiveness. Sentences are generally cut to the bone, replies to questions often phrased in a single word. Ian Pembroke, the young(ish) hero is thoughtful, self-effacing, kind. Around him swirl a family of quirky, dysfunctional relatives who give him plenty to ponder as he sets out to find who, amongst his family members is capable of murder. Of course horse racing figures into the plot. It wouldn't be a Dick Francis book without it, but here it is only tangentially involved, and not the primary focus. I do often laugh at the author's penchant for naming female characters the most preposterous names. Here, the most sympathetic female character is called, (god help us all) Coochie. But I find this just another endearing quirk of the author, not a flaw of his plots. And for those who want to be prodded into thinking of larger issues, the concept of money in a family is explored. Does having a wealthy father lead the children to a sense of entitlement? jealousy? ambition to succeed? disdain or worship of money? These questions are certainly posed, and given some thoughtful discussion, but not enough to be troublesome. One can't help, at the end of the book, to wish all of the characters involved a better journey through life. And Francis makes us believe that the conclusion found in the book will only lead to happier lives for all. A good read.

The Real History Behind the Templars, by Sharan Newman

The medieval historian who revealed The Real History Behind the Da Vinci Code uncloaks the Templars.

In the year 1119, these noblemen found their calling as protectors of the faithful on a dangerous pilgrimage to newly conquered Jerusalem. Now, historian Sharan Newman elucidates the mysteries and misconceptions of the Templars, from their true first founding and role in the Crusades to more modern intrigues, including:

- Were they devout knights or secret heretics?
- Did they leave behind a fantastic treasure-hidden to this day?
- How did they come to be associated with the Holy Grail?
- Did they come to America before the time of Columbus?
- Does the order still exist?

An Excellent and Very Readable History of A Very Complex Subject
By H. Fuller
What with The DaVinci Code and all, the poor old Templars have more fallacies spread around about them than just about any other group of which I can think. Ms. Newman does a wonderful job of describing the situation behind the founding, the life, and the death of the Poor Knights of Christ of the Temple of Solomon, the Templars. She takes a terribly complex subject and subdivides it into manageable portions with the inter-relationships denoted in bold-faced type. This makes her history accessible to a reasonably educated reader who may not have a degree in Medieval History. I found her work to be very accurate if, at times, a bit flip and very easy to follow.

Sharan writes so engagingly, even in her non-fiction
By Jane
I have read many of Sharan Newman's historical novels and love her engaging style, vivid characters, and sturdily researched history. Still, I hesitated at buying a nonfiction work, worrying that it might be a bit to dully academic. Not to worry. Sharan Newman's nonfiction reads as engagingly as her fiction. She uses an interesting technique of addressing the various aspects of the subject in separate chapters, so you don't really follow a timeline (although she uses many aids for you to keep track of the sequence of events), but are allowed to view the subject from various viewpoints.

I love her statements in the beginning about her footnotes. She allows that they're necessary if readers want to check up on her facts or pursue further lines of inquiry. But she also suggests that if you're just reading her work for pleasure and your own edification, you can just trust her and zip through. How refreshing! I do admit to reading quite a few of the notes (the ones in languages I know, that is), but only because they fleshed out some point or other.

I had read - and enjoyed - Holy Blood Holy Grail (by Baigent, Leigh, & Lincoln) years ago, but didn't get caught up in the Da Vinci Code, because it stuck me it was covering pretty much the same material. Sharan Newman's book soundly tromps on both of those books without being overly negative. I'm so glad I read this book, because it enriches my reading of other novels placed around this time, such as Bernard Cornwell's Grail Quest Series.

Refreshing research of a much maligned subject
By Stephen St Clair
These days, it seems like all that's available about the history of the Order of the Temple is the fantastical pseudo-histories of this group of poor knights.

Sharan Newman has really dug into every aspect of the myths, legends, and the facts of the Templars. From her first sentence "How does a legend begin?" she dissects all the overblown stories of this much-maligned group.

Her last chapter points our her heroism in wading into this minefield of revisionist history. The title - "How to tell if you're reading pseudohistory" really explains what a mess this area of history has become. The Templars existed; there is no doubt about that. But they've been totally hijacked by those who want to claim that they are around to this day, even on the U.S. One Dollar Bill.

The most remarkable part of her book is something that 99% of Templar "history" books leave out - FOOTNOTES !! It's simply amazing how many books get sold these days without footnotes. (I think we need a footnote rating on Amazon - The Footnote Police ;)

I've owned Newman's book for about 6 months and its pages are more worn than many books I've owned for 10 years.

I highly recommend this terrific book. You'll treat it more like a reference.

From Booklist
Johnson continues the Son of Destiny series that began with The Sword (2007). Alys, her uncle's prisoner, uses her shape-shifting talents to escape and reach Nightfall Isle, where she finds Wolfer, her closest childhood friend. In the castle she meets Kelly, the self-proclaimed Queen of Nightfall who is married to Wolfer's twin. Kelly triggered the curse around which Johnson's complex fantasy-romance series is constructed. Although the plot may be slow moving, those who love detailed lovemaking scenes will revel in the 20 pages devoted to Alys and Wolfer's first intimate encounter. Diana Tixier Herald

Jean does it again!
By Miladyblue
The Sons of Destiny is already in its second volume, and Jean does not let up in the flow of the story. This time, she can get right into the plot, without too much exposition.

This time around, the story centers around the second of the Sons of Destiny, Wolfer, who is also known as the Wolf. Largest and wildest of the brothers, it does not seem possible for any woman to tame him.

It also does not seem possible that the woman introduced here, Alys of Devries, a childhood friend, will be the one to tame him, either. A mixture of courage and shyness, she is an enigmatic contradiction that nonetheless captures his heart.

Unlike Kelly Doyle of The Sword, however, Alys is a native Katani woman with a dark secret - a connection to the brothers' hitherto unknown enemy that may just drive her and Wolfer apart.

Wolfer is a quiet loner, and the sweet, charming Alys seems to be the one made for him.

I enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed The Sword, and I am looking forward to The Master, which is due out in September of 2007.

Book two in the series. Unique storyline. Unfortunately, "Kelly" nearly ruined this story like the first.
By Alyce In Wonderland
This is the second book in an 8- part series. The first book is "The Sword". You will want to read that first. It makes a big difference in understanding "The Wolf." If you haven't read "The Sword" yet, you will find yourself quite lost.

I'm writing this review under the assumption that readers have already read "The Sword." This will prevent having to bore everyone with a reintroduction of all the characters.

Wolfer knows he is next in line to fulfill his part of the prophecy. Years ago, he fell in love with a neighbor girl named Alys. He still wears a braid of her hair around his wrist. However, the two have been denied contact since the brothers were banished to Nightfall Island.

Alys has been abused by her uncle for years. He forces her to take part in his evil spells against the Sons of Destiny. However, Alys has never given up her dream of reuniting with Wolfer. Wolfer's youngest brother has secretly kept in contact with her. When the time is right, he helps her escape her cruel uncle and make her way to Nightfall.

Wolfer and Alys are instantly attracted to one another. Neither has forgotten their past connection. Alys is afraid to admit that she took part in her uncle's schemes against Wolfer and his brothers. When the truth comes out, she fears it will end Wolfer's love for her. However, with her uncle becoming an even bigger threat to the brothers, Alys knows she must confess and help stop his evil plan to kill Wolfer and his family.

I liked this story for it's uniqueness. Jean Johnson has a talent for creativity. My only complaint is her insistence that women are not strong unless they are being nasty to their men. Kelly, from The Sword, is back in this story... ruder and snobbier than ever. Lines like "I decide what happens in MY home!" just annoy me. She seems to have forgotten that it has been the brothers' home for years, and they were kind enough to share it with her when she entered a few months ago. What is worse is the way she pushes Alys to act snotty and bossy towards Wolfer, as if it is an insult to women for Alys to be kind- hearted and easy- going.

Wolfer's character is different than it was in the first book. Instead of the quite and gentle nature he had, he is now an angry man who constantly loses his temper and storms around. I was looking forward to his story, based upon how he was written in "The Sword." So this was a bit disappointing as well.

I'm still looking forward to the next book, as I am dying to know what happened to Dominor. I'm also still anxious to read the story of the dark and mysterious Rydan. Johnson knows how to keep our interest alive.

Amazingly sensual
By Katzenjammer123
review
One of the best erotic romances I have ever read.

Dylan Ivory is an author of erotic romances and her next book is about BDSM. To get a clearer understanding of it she sets up a meeting with Alec Walker who's a dominant and also an author of dark thrillers. Dylan is fascinated by Alec at first glance but also irritated by him.
Alec is a master of domination and from the first moment of meeting Dylan he feels that their relationship will not stop with talking about BDSM but that it will be about living it. He is convinced that Dylan needs to surrender control to him to really start living and feeling. Soon afer their first sparkling meeting they are deeper into a relationship than both thought possible. Dylan as well as Alec always shied away from real and lasting relationships because of things that happened in their childhoods. So the deep feelings they developed are scaring both of them.
Will Dylan and Alec overcome their fears for a chance of a relationship filled with love and trust?

"Pleasure's Edge", the first book written by Eden Bradley under her new pen name Eve Berlin, was everything I hoped for and more. Right from the first pages on the story is incredibly erotic and it stays that way until the last page. The chemistry between Dylan and Alew is over the top and their sex scenes are amazingly hot and sensual. Sometimes there can be too much sex in a erotica so that the romance doesn't have a chance however in this book the balance feels just right.
Dylan's experience with BDSM and that she is willing to surrender after a short time was believable because of her deep feelings and issues. To see her surrender and relax was beautiful and exciting.
I liked both Dylan and Alec right from the start and enjoyed that they are both strong and go their own way. I loved the scenes in which they learned more about each other and in which you could see their vulnerable sides. All of the steps in their relationship felt real and I was happy and satisfied with how the book ended.
Dante's book is up next and I will definitely get myself a copy because Eve Berlin just knows how to write sensual and lovely erotica.

cover
I love the colour scheme and that the cover is more sensual/erotic than sexy because that fits perfectly to the book.

final appraisal
I enjoyed everything about "Pleasure's Edge" and the combination of very hot, erotic sex scenes and lovely, romantic scenes felt just perfect to me. This book captured my interest from beginning to end and never got boring. I'm already very excited for Dante's book. Eden Bradley writing as Eve Berlin is a pure pleasure for fans of erotica.

ONE BOOK ALL ROMANCE READERS NEED TO GET!!!
By Ivelisse
Really really enjoyed this book. I felt such a connection to this book, Alec reminded me of my husband with the little things he does (especially the goatee thing that I love so much). This book reminds you to live and let live, don't forget the past but leave it there and live for today. If we didn't take risk or opportunities we will never know what happens. "Pleasure's Edge" is definitely a recommend read, very emotional, gives you that feeling in the pit of your stomach that makes you turn the page over and over, could not put it down. The sex scenes are amazing and not over the top and very realistic. I can't wait to read Dante's story (half spanish, half italian *swoon*).

Pleasure's Edge by Eve Berlin
Contemporary Romance-/Erotic -Nov. 2nd, 2010
4 stars

In this story 2 strong willed people are highly attracted to each other in an extremely erotic book.

Dylan is an erotic author who wants to explore writing BDSM in her next book but feels she needs to ask a professional. She meets the sexy dominant named Alec who is attracted to Dylan and challenges her. Alec feels he can train Dylan into a submissive, not just tell her about the BDSM lifestyle. But Dylan surprises him with a counter offer. She will agree on one condition. If he cannot prove she is a submissive then he will let her dominate him!! Alec agrees. And the battle of wills between them begins!

This story is scorching, there wasn't a moment when either character wasn't thinking about the other and getting HOT under the collar! The storyline made sense and flowed well but some readers may find there is a bit too much sex! I particularly liked that Dylan and Alec are completely turned on by each other almost every waking hour. This book was very focused on each character and how they felt about the other person. It was refreshing not to have: a mystery, some sudden danger that occurs to either of the characters thrown in to `add' to the plot or another character tossed in to muddy their growing relationship. This made the story very straightforward and easy to read. Those who love sexy scenes will also love how Alec is so focused on pleasuring Dylan and making her `his.' Dylan has control issues related to her family history and letting go was a big part of her transformation that added depth to the story.

If you love hot sex with an edge you will definitely enjoy this book.

From Publishers Weekly
In her third novel, Furnivall returns to the story of Lydia Ivanova from The Russian Concubine, a Russian girl who fled the Bolsheviks and settled in Junchow, China, with her mother, who was then killed. Alone in a strange culture, Lydia learns that her father, whom she believed to be dead, is imprisoned in a labor camp. She flees China with her stepbrother, Alexei, to search for her father, leaving behind her lover, Chang An Lo, a Communist rebel. When Alexei later abandons Lydia, Lo comes to the rescue, but not before Lydia learns the terrible truth about the only family she has left. Furnivall deftly evokes the details of a bygone era, though these often take too much of a front seat and distract from Lydia's quest to find her father. Fans of Furnivall's earlier works will enjoy the chance to see what has become of Lydia. (June)

Surprisingly good
By E. Smiley
The Girl from Junchow is a rare novel: a second book that is actually better than the first. I enjoyed the first book, The Russian Concubine, but considered Furnivall's next novel a bit of a train wreck, so I came to this one with mixed feelings... and, as it turns out, was pleasantly surprised.

This book continues the adventures of Lydia, a teenage Russian refugee brought up in 1920's China, as she returns to Russia in search of her imprisoned father, accompanied by her half-brother Alexei and friend Liev Popkov. Her Chinese lover Chang An Lo puts in an appearance as well, and he's actually much improved since The Russian Concubine; he has a life now and struck me as a much more believable character than he did the first time around. We're also introduced to a new cast of secondary characters: a pleasure, since one of the things Furnivall does very well is develop the secondary cast.

The story, meanwhile, is an entertaining one, complete with crisp dialogue and a well-drawn historical setting. And Furnivall's writing style has clearly matured since The Russian Concubine as well. The biggest sticking point for me is that the plot lacks realism, with characters frequently getting out of ridiculously dangerous and difficult situations with mind-boggling ease. Nothing nature, injuries or the Soviet State throws at these characters manages to stop them for long, which dilutes the suspense and makes relating to the characters' predicaments more difficult. These quick-and-easy solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems are nothing you wouldn't see in many a fantasy novel or action-packed thriller, but they seem out of place here, when combined with much loving attention to character development and setting, not to mention the relatively slow pacing, with whole chapters devoted to character interaction.

For those who haven't read The Russian Concubine, this book should still be easy to understand; the setting has shifted from China to Russia anyway, and many old characters have fallen by the wayside. And for those who read and enjoyed the first book, I highly recommend this sequel.

A wonderful sequel
By Jennifer Rothwell
After finishing 'The Russian Concubine' two years ago I hoped and hoped that a sequel would be released. I was so excited when I heard that 'The Girl from Junchow' had been released and snatched it up immediately.
I was not disappointed. We return to the world of Lydia Ivanova and find her journeying to Russia to find her father- just as she said she would at the end of 'The Russian Concubine'. I was relieved to find that we are also kept aware of the activities of Chang An Lo, for I had found him to be an intriguing character.
The plot of this novel has been expertly woven into the context of Stalinst Russia- the way Furnivall portrays the time period is magnificent (which isn't surprising, seeing as the author dealt with aspects of Stalnist Russia in her brilliant novel 'The Red Scarf').
The story is gripping, and has not lost the thrill that was present in the first novel. Lydia's character has been developed even further, and now, after two novels, I am becoming strangely attached to this courageous protagonist.
All in all, a wonderful book.

Better than the first, but...
By Kindle Customer
I liked this book as well as the first but was quite thrown off by the convenient "Get Out Of Jail Free" card-type of escape from dangerous situations that came up time and time again. Also, the revelation that Lydia made to Chang An Lo at the end of the book regarding the deal she'd made came far too late with no foreshadowing whatsoever. It felt contrived as did a few other things in this book.

That said, it is an enjoyable read. The characters are fleshed out nicely. I enjoyed it enough to stay awake into the wee hours reading it.
