Wyoming Game and Fish warden Joe Pickett—honest, upright and hardworking—tends to attract the meanest villains this side of a spaghetti western, as shown in his sprightly sixth outing in which he and his family become the target of John Wayne Keeley, a misguided, conscienceless killer. In addition, Opal Scarlett, the matriarch of a wealthy ranching clan, is missing, and two of her sons, Hank and Arlen, are fighting over the estate. Joe's daughter, Sheridan, is best friends with Hank's daughter, Julie, which puts Sheridan in danger. As usual, hotheaded Joe is also in trouble with his boss, self-serving Randy Pope. When Joe is pulled off of the search for Opal, he stubbornly follows his instincts rather than orders, bringing down Pope's wrath. Edgar-finalist Box (Out of Range) expertly evokes Wyoming's landscape, wildlife, people and politics. Joe's love for the natural world shines throughout, but his lack of political finesse costs him his job by book's end. Fans will eagerly wait to see how he recoups his fortunes in the next installment.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Keeping any series balanced between familiar and fresh is tricky. An excellent series is like a tightrope act. With the author pushing himself to daring new heights, we just know he's bound to fall. In the sixth installment of Box's Joe Pickett series, the Wyoming game warden is back home in Saddlestring, happy to be with his family, when he finds himself in the crosshairs of an ex-con intent on righting a perceived wrong (from Winterkill, 2003) and drawn into an epic family feud. Out of Range (2005) was so remarkable that asking Box to top it seems unfair. Indeed, though Joe is again tested, In Plain Sight lacks the intensity and inventiveness of the previous books. Box always works in an issue--here it's the "curse of the third generation," or inheritance troubles--and while it's a nice update on the western gothic, it doesn't have the same burning relevance as ecoterrorism or natural gas drilling. Even a family-in-jeopardy device feels slightly rote. But a high-wire artist can't go up indefinitely, and even performing closer to the ground, Box puts on a hell of a show. Keir Graff

My Newest Favorite Author C.J. Box
By Dennis E Butler
I've read and plan to re-read the entire Joe Pickett series of novels. I'm so happy that I saw Lee Child's praise for C.J. Box, because surprisingly I hadn't heard of him until a little over a month ago when I picked up his latest Joe Pickett novel, a hard-back, "Off the Grid". I'm amazed that he hadn't shown up on my radar years ago, since he writes the kind of novels I love to read, i.e. action/suspense. Best of all, his writing style is crisp, straight-forward and logical; none of that psycho-babble self-analysis stuff, that I find usually breaks the continuity of story flow, while not adding much of value to character development. I urge new readers to start out with his first Joe Pickett novel, and then continue sequentially through all of them before reading "Off the Grid". This is NOT at all necessary to do. But, because of Box's rich development of the entire Pickett Family including his horses and dogs, as well as his vital secondary protagonist Nate Romanowski, plus his consistent carry-over of the life stories of the characters who play the numerous supporting roles used to enrich his stories, reading these books sequentially may also further enrich your appreciation for the strength and proficiency of Mr. Box..
He joins my list of go-to easy to read, creative and prolific authors who spin wonderful tales - Ted Bell, Lee Child, Clive Cussler, Tony Hillerman, James Rollins, Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, Harold Coben, James Patterson, Daniel Silva, etc.

He sure deals with rough cases!
By Rachel S. Jerdin
Joe's family is directly threatened by this man who wants revenge because of his daughter's death ( Joe and his family were the foster family to his daughter). The family of the girl who was Sheridan's best friend are incredibly messed up with two of the brothers thinking they are going to get the ranch upon mom's death. That sure destroyed this family. Quick pace, lots of action. Now I want to see if he gets his job back and will his boss be fired (what I want).

Revenge
By Carolyn S. Boswell
Revenge and hate are the cornerstones of this novel. It is a glimpse into the results of unbridled anger and hate, which leads to destruction. As always, C.J. Box weaves several threads together to make an enticing story with unexpected twists and turns.
