Just Like Me, Only Better, by Carol Snow

From the author of Here Today, Gone to Maui, the story of a woman who finally got a life...some else's.

Ever since Veronica's husband found the love of his life-not her-she's been a walking zombie with runny mascara. It doesn't help that she keeps getting mistaken for Haley Rush-the Hollywood starlet whose dazzling life is plastered on every magazine.

When Haley's manager offers Veronica a job as a celebrity double, it only takes a moment before she says yes. Veronica gets to drive Haley's car, wear her phenomenal clothes-and have fun with her hot celebrity boyfriend, Brady Ellis. Too bad the job's only part-time, and at the end of the day she has to return to her life as a cash-strapped substitute teacher and cub scout mom.

But when real sparks fly with Brady, is it a fantasy come true or a disaster in disguise?

From Publishers Weekly
A divorced Orange County suburbanite's life gets a delicious jolt in Snow's superb romantic comedy. After Veronica Czaplicki's husband leaves her for a mega-rich realtor, she scrapes by, substitute teaching at her son Ben's elementary school and renting a guest house from an overbearing couple. In a fun twist of fate, Veronica's resemblance to young superstar Haley Rush (think: Miley Cyrus meets Lindsay Lohan) attracts Haley's manager, who offers Veronica $100 an hour to pretend to be Haley for photo ops. At first Veronica loves getting a makeover and dating Brady Ellis, Haley's hot ex-boyfriend and co-star. The good times, of course, can't last, and romantic treachery lurks. Snow (Here Today, Gone to Maui) turns what could've been just another single mom mope fest into a wonderfully witty reminder that celebrity always carries a price tag. (Apr.)

What it would be like to be Britney/Lindsay/Miley...
By Jenna Sue
I'll admit, I'm addicted to magazines like In Style, OK, US, etc., so when I saw this novel was about a woman being a body double for a Britney/Lindsay-esque singer/actress, I couldn't wait to read it. I wasn't disappointed. It was a sexy & addictive peek into what it's like to be a celeb in today's fame-obsessed culture. Even though it was fiction, I have a feeling author Carol Snow has connections in the industry because it definitely felt like some behind the scenes dirt. Very fun and dishy.

It tells the story of Veronica Czaplicki, a substitute teacher & mom whose husband has just dumped her. Veronica happens to look like Haley Rush, a star of a tween sitcom (think Hannah Montana). Veronica gets a job pretending to be Haley at red carpet & other events... and as a bonus, gets photo ops with sexy costar Brady Ellis. Sparks begin to fly between the two of them, and as a result, life starts to get messy for Veronica. Turns out, fame isn't easy.

There are so many great, laugh out loud scenes (including one involving getting a spray tan that was HILARIOUS). I also loved the relationship between Veronica and her son, and also how her new life complicated her life as a mom. Also, I thought I knew what was going to happen romance-wise, but there were so many twists & turns after a while I was just happy to hang on and see what happened.

This is definitely one of those books you can't put down once you start it. Highly recommend.

What was she thinking?!
By Kelly
I Hated this book, and wish someone on this site had warned me how awful it was. So on that note, here is my warning to anyone contemplating reading this book.

The main character, Veronica, starts out likable enough--a single mom struggling to make ends meet and still have time for her son and for herself. She seems fairly realistic, even if I don't understand her refusal to take a full-time teaching job just because it is at a school her son does not attend (she struggles financially because of her decision to wait around for a position to open up at his school, and in the long run this seems to be more of a detrimental decision for her child than taking a job at another school would be--I mean, she actually chooses to struggle rather than do what needs to be done to make things better for her and her son). But soon, she gets embroiled in the pseudo-celebrity world of Haley Rush, and dear God let the awful decision-making begin.

Now we get into some of my real issues. Veronica is supposed to be a mature, loving mother, yet at the first chance she is forgetting about her son and having sex in a car with a TOTAL STRANGER (just because you see someone on TV does not mean they are not a stranger, idiot!). She goes from being a moderately interesting character still picking up the pieces of her life (getting married far too young and for the wrong reason--read: pregnancy, not love, and subsequently getting divorced when her significantly-older-than-her husband leaves her for a significantly-older-than-both-of-them woman) to a poster child for Awful Mother and Poor Decisions. When Veronica is not busy showing up late to get her son, or forgetting him all together, she's fantasizing about a guy she knows nothing about and becoming totally shallow--obsessing about her hair and fake tan and clothes. In between all of this, the story drags on and on, with all kinds of boring filler happening, then she makes some more bad decisions, more boring filler, and then the end, which is completely unsatisfactory because the author spent no time developing the relationships between characters.

And don't get me started on Actual Haley Rush. She is the most bland train-wreck character I've ever come across. She spends most of her time sitting on her rear whining. She is a train wreck in that the author tells us she has a drinking/drug problem, family problems, and some mental problems (she tells us these things more so than shows us--and how about them calling her bulimic, but then constantly showing her shoving junk food down her throat with no purging occurring) but, like I said, Haley spends most of her time pretty sedentary. And can I just say, without spoilers, I have no idea why Haley's romantic hookup likes her...she is the antithesis of everything he is. Opposites attract in some respects, but a guy who likes hiking and the outdoors hardly seems likely to be happy long-term with a woman who won't get off the couch or whose idea of the "great outdoors" is a spa.

Anyway, to sum up, the characters actually devolve instead of evolve for most of the book and the story has an awful lot of words considering not a whole lot of interest happens. I could not get into the story because I hated all the characters by about the halfway point. The only reason I finished the book was because, dang it, I'd PAID for this schlock, and OVERPAID, at that. If you really must read this book, do yourself a favor and check it out at your local library, because there is no way that this e-book (or pretty much any e-book, because they're so cheap to produce) is worth the $11 they are now asking for it; I wouldn't pay $1 now that I know what it is all about.

The story's not worth the price
By SunFlowers
Just Like Me, Only Better is just what most reviews here, on goodreads, and Barnes and Noble say it is: a light read. Light read is code for "eh it's alright but definitely not something you recommend"

But Penguin publishing is one greedy publishing company (I wish I'd know about their greed and drama problems with Amazon before I bought this book. I WON'T purchase another books published by them or their umbrella companies unless it's REALLY worth it unlike this book). GREEDY COMPANY! This book from beginning to end is a $3.99 bargain bin book you happen to run on. Not $10. Ebooks cost little to nothing to produce and there's no distribution costs so WHY would an ebook be anything over $5? Greed. Plain and simple. These people are crazy and greedy as hell! The story isn't worth the price despite being a quick, light read.

Veronica is a 29 year old divorcee who's 41 year old husband cheated on her with a 52 year old woman. Veronica's youth passed her by getting knocked up and having a shotgun wedding at 22 so she's single, depressed and struggling to stay sane for her 6 year old son. Veronica is a doppelganger for Haley Rush, a Disney channel like tween star.

While out celebrating her birthday Haley Rush's manager offers Veronica a job offer. After taking him up on the offer she learns it's to impersonate Haley in public as Haley, not a body double. Because Haley is too "busy" to go out and have coffee and give the paparazzi the pictures they need. In truth, Haley is a bat you-know-what witch who's bipolar, addicted to a host of prescription meds, an alcoholic, bulimic and forever Peter Pan in the Michael Jackson "my parents took my childhood pimping me out in the spotlight so I'm scarred and my growth is stunted so I act forever 6 years old. Boo hoo for Haley.

I don't know what this story is. It's NOT a romance novel. It's not chick lit. It feels as if Ms. Snow was just writing and writing and just put in ANY and EVERYTHING she could imagine. It reads much more like a for free fan fiction over an action $10 novel.

It's okay but the balance is awful. It starts pretty good actually with Veronica working out the kinks on how to "be Haley" then it just lags for way to long. And if you EVERY want to read a Bad Mother's Handbook...Veronica is your woman. I feel so bad for her poor little boy. The little tyke is obviously in need of some family therapy because it's obvious the divorce and being shuffled from his mother's boring guesthouse to his grandma looking stepmother and father's mansion and he's so confused and whiny (for a little boy) and it's not him being a mama's boy but something obviously emotionally wrong with him. Veronica however, starts basking in finally having fun to where she just starts slipping away and turns into that friend or acquaintance who starts putting their "fun" time and sex time and dating BEFORE their children then they remember "Oh right! I have responsibilities and a good parent understands the balance"

Overall, PASS it on by. It's light and funny at the beginning then as it progresses you just want a refund and if you get it in a ebook a refund is impossible.

3 stars for a decent beginning but just what 3 stars mean overall: It's okay. Okay isn't something I'd recommend you buying. Not for $10.
