In August 1914, a British aviator patrolling the skies above Mons, in Belgium, spotted the advance of von Kluck's German army toward the British Expeditionary Force. Interviewed for TV five decades later, the pilot recalled the reaction of senior officers when he reported the news . . . they didn't believe him. Pilots soon took cameras with them to give proof of their sightings to skeptical general officers whose vision was limited to the view from the ground.

Before long, both sides were flying reconnaissance missions, and hostile aviators were firing pistols at one another. Then machine guns. And soon after that, aircraft were designed as aerial killers -- the first fighters. They were delicate, unstable constructs of wood and wire, usually underpowered by inefficient engines. But they could fly. And the learning curve was steep back then. One day, someone asked, "If you can hang one engine on an airframe, why not two, or even more? If you can see to shoot, you can see to drop a weapon, can't you?" Thus began the age of the bomber.

It was the Germans at Verdun, in the bitter weather of February 1916, who first made actual the concept we now call airpower -- the systematic application of tactical aircraft to control a battlefield (the definition will change and develop). The objective was to seal off the battlefield from French aviation, denying the enemy the ranging eyes needed to see behind the German trench lines; and as it turned out, the plan didn't work terribly well. Still, others saw what the Germans tried, and recognized that it could be made to work. By the end of the war, aircraft were attacking infantry on the ground. And for the first time soldiers knew what field mice had long understood: The target of an aerial predator feels as much psychological burden as physical danger.

Between the wars, a handful of visionary officers in Britain, Italy, Germany, Japan, Russia, and the United States grappled with the theory of airpower . . . and with its practical applications in the next, inevitable war. The most famous of these, the Italian Guilo Douhet, proposed the first great "philosophy" of airpower: Bomber and attack aircraft can reach far into the enemy's rear to attack the factories that make the weapons and the railroads and roads and bridges that transport them to the fighting front. It was Douhet's view that airpower alone -- without armies or navies -- could bring victory in war. In other words, if you smash enough factories, railroads, roads, and bridges, you'll bring your enemy to the point where he will lie down and wave the white flag.

Douhet was too optimistic. An air force is remarkable not only for what it can do, but for what it cannot. The unchanging truth of warfare is that only infantry can conquer an enemy -- infantry is people, and only people can occupy and hold ground. Tanks can roll across ground. Artillery can punish and neutralize ground. And airpower -- which is at heart longer-range artillery -- can punish and neutralize over long distances. But only people can take up residency there.

Yet airpower can have a powerful effect, and this fact was not lost on the German General Staff. In May 1940, when another German attack violated French soil at a place called Sedan, French soldiers excused their rapid departure from the battlefield by saying, "But mon lieutenant, bombs were falling."

The second global conflict announced the importance of airpower in terms that no one could ignore. Now, huge fleets of aircraft attacked everything they could reach -- and that reach was ever growing, for aviation science advanced rapidly. Engineering talent tends to follow the excitement of discovery and possibility. Engineers who had once devoted their skills to developing steam engines for ships or railroad locomotives found more exciting work. The great breakthroughs in engine power came first, and those drove improvements in airframe design.

By the beginning of the Second World War, Daimler-Benz and Rolls-Royce had both developed water-cooled in-line engines exceeding a thousand horsepower. In America, Allison did the same, and Pratt & Whitney began production of their monster, two-thousand-horsepower R-2800 radial engine in East Hartford, Connecticut. More efficiently cooled, simpler, and capable of absorbing catastrophic battle damage, the Double-Wasp and its close relatives would power a variety of successful tactical aircraft (F-6F Hellcat, F-4U Corsair, TBF/TBM Avenger, P-47 Thunderbolt, etc.), plus numerous types of bombers and transport aircraft.

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, called "the Jug" by its pilots for its brutal and decidedly ungraceful lines, was originally designed by Alexander Cartvelli as a high-altitude interceptor, and it would distinguish itself as an escort fighter for the bomber fleets of the 8th Air Force over Germany. But the Thunderbolt carried a total of eight heavy .50-caliber machine guns, and could also carry bombs and rockets. Its rugged construction and immense armament rapidly led pilots to experiment with other forms of hunting. Soon Jug drivers were flying low on missions they sometimes called Rodeos, for their wild and woolly character: If it moved, it was fair game. Such missions inspired the German Army to coin a new word, Jabo-short for Jagdbomber, literally "hunting bomber," spoken with alarm and respect.

But the P-47 was more than that. Other countries had aircraft with similar missions. The Russian Il-2 was a dedicated low-level attack bird with an evil reputation among those whom it hunted, but it required a fighter escort. The Thunderbolt was something else. It could hold its own in a swarm of enemy and friendly fighters -- now called a "furball" -- and go low to make life miserable for the people on the ground. And that -- though hardly recognized at the time -- was a revolution of sorts. Using a single aircraft for more than one mission was so logical that the Jug's ability to do more than one mission well seems to have been overlooked. Alexander Cartvelli accidentally invented the multi-role aircraft. Today, the name of the game is multi-role aircraft.

So just what can airpower do? It can make life thoroughly miserable for an enemy -- especially if you can hit exactly what you want to hit. Toward this goal, America continues to lead the world. "If you can see it, you can hit it," goes the saying. Following this usually comes, "If you can hit it, you can kill it." That way of thinking shaped American air doctrine. Dive bombing and close air support were first systematized by the United States Marine Corps in Nicaragua during their early interventions there. In the late 1930s, the Army Air Corps (later the Army Air Force) adopted the ultra-secret Norden bombsight to bring systematic accuracy to high-altitude bombing. In World War Two, the AAF experimented successfully with the "Razon" and "Mazon" TV-guided bombs. And the Germans conducted similar experiments, sinking an Italian battleship with their radio command guided Fritz-X bombs.

Such weapons have been improved over the years. Most of us can remember watching "the luckiest guy in Iraq" on CNN. During the Gulf War, his car was perhaps two hundred yards from the impact point of a two-thousand-pound guided bomb on an Iraqi bridge. Bridges are always worth destroying. So are factories, aircraft on the ground, radio and TV towers, and microwave relays. So too, especially, are the places which generate signals and commands . . . because commanders are there, and killing commanders is ever the quickest way of disrupting an army. Or a whole nation. Using precision-guided munitions can be likened to sniping with bombs. All warfare is cruel and ugly, but such munitions are less cruel and ugly than the alternatives.

With the recent advent of precision-guided munitions to attack the command centers of the enemy nation with great selectivity and deadly accuracy, the promise of airpower is finally being realized. But this fulfillment is not always what people wish it to be. You want a "surgical strike," find yourself a good surgeon. Surgical strikes do not happen in war. Yet the phrase continues to be approvingly employed in speeches by those (usually by elected or appointed politicians) who don't know what the hell they are talking about. To state things simply, surgeons use small and very sharp knives, held with delicacy by highly trained hands, to invade and repair a diseased body. Tactical and strategic aircraft drop metal objects filled with high explosives to destroy targets. The technology is much improved over what it once was, but it will never be surgically precise. Yes, the qualitative improvement over the past fifty years is astounding, but no, it isn't magical. All the same, you would be wise not to make yourself the object of the deadly attention of American warplanes.

The newest revolution-also American in origin-is stealth. When researching Red Storm Rising, I traveled to what was then the headquarters of the Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base in the Virginia Tidewater. There, a serious and laconic lieutenant colonel from Texas looked me straight in the eye and announced, "Son, you may safely assume that an invisible aircraft is tactically useful."

"Well, gee, sir," I replied, "I kinda figured that out for myself."

Seemingly a violation of the laws of physics, stealth is really a mere perversion of them. The technology began with a theoretical paper written around 1962 by a Russian radar engineer on the diffraction properties of microwave radiation. About ten years later an engineer at Lockheed read the paper and thought, "We can make an invisible airplane."

Less than ten years after that, such an airplane was flying over a highly instrumented test range and driving radar technicians to despair. Meanwhile men in blue suits slowly discarded their disbelief, saw the future, and pronounced it good. Very good. Several years later over Baghdad on the night of January 17th, 1991, F-117A Black Jets of the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing proved beyond question that stealth really works.

The stealth revolution is simple to express: An aircraft can now go literally anywhere (depending only on its fuel capacity) and deliver bombs with a very high probability of killing the target (about 85 to 90% for a single weapon, about 98% for two), and in the process it will give no more warning than the flash and noise of the detonation. Meaning: The national command authorities (an American euphemism for the president, premier, or dictator) of any country are now vulnerable to direct attack. And for those who believe that the USAF was not trying to kill Saddam Hussein, be advised that maybe his death was not the objective. Maybe we were just trying to turn off the radio (i.e. command-and-control system) he was holding. A narrow legal point, but even the Pentagon has lawyers. However one might wish to put it, we were trying, and Hussein was a lucky man indeed to avoid the skillful attempts to flip off that particular switch. Whoever next offends the United States of America might wish to consider that. Because we'll try harder next time, and all you have to know is where that offending radio transmitter is.

As in Submarine and Armored Cav, I'll be taking you on a guided tour of one of America's premier fighting units and its equipment. In this case, the unit is the 366th Wing based out of Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. As organized today, the 366th is the Air Force's equivalent of the Army's 82nd Airborne or 101st Air Assault Division -- a rapid-deployment force that can be sent to any trouble spot in the world on a moment's notice. The 366th's job is to delay an aggressor until the main force of USAF assets arrive in-theater, ready to go on the offensive. But before we visit these daring men and women in their amazing flying machines, let's take a look at the technologies that enable an aircraft to move, see, and fight.

One of the Better Ones
By A Customer
This is one of the better books in this Tom Clancy series, especially if you are interested in the subject. One interesting observation is that in Tom's interview of Chuck Horner, General Horner doesn't come off as well as he does in "Every Man a Tiger", especially in comparison to the parallel John Warden interview. Colonel Warden is a visionary who wrote a groundbreaking book on air operations and knew enough military history to consider writing a book about the Alexander the Great and his relevance today.

Indespensible
By Moderate Risk
This is the book that launched me into success. Dr. Anthony's book isn't just about feeling self-confident. That's the last thing that comes to mind. Self-confidence is merely a byproduct of following its precepts. Many will read this book and agree with it but nothing will happen. Some will even contend with Dr. Anthony's points without testing them. However, Dr. Anthony clearly states that you shouldn't believe him just because he wrote it but should test everything he says before believing it. Anyone who writes a bad review about this book hasn't used it in their actual life; they have only read it (maybe). This book works and it works without exception. In this book you learn how to draw what you want into your life and how to know what you want vs. what you intellectually think you want. It demonstrates how we are responsible for the lives we have and that even though we blame outside forces, we ourselves are to blame. We are the architect of our lives. When I have followed this book I have succeeded spectacularly. When I have forgotten about it I have slipped into old patterns. How effective is it? I wanted a position in Florida and the boss where I wanted to go told me there was a five year waiting list for the Florida position I wanted and that I was at the bottom. I used Dr. Anthony's precepts in this book and believe it or not, everything in my life fell into place and I was in the position within three months, bypassing any waiting list. This book works in any area of life; not just business. If you are currently facing bad problems like having been in a car accident, disease and so forth, you might want to read "Making the Impossible Possible" which is Dr. Anthony's book that deals with exactly those kind of situations and moving from those situations into what you truly want. Dr. Anthony is a Life Performance Coach and he is one of the best of the best.

Overall really good, but a few negative details.
By Ap6
First of all, for the most part this is a great book with very good information. However there are a few things that, had I known about previously, probably would have caused me not to buy the book.

First, although the author does a good job at keeping the religious undertone to a minimum, it is still there in a few spots and sometimes kind of annoying, especially in his erroneous definition of the term 'faith'. The author states that "...faith is not totally limiting. It recognizes there is more to discover and know, and that one must always seek to unfold more and more of the Truth."(p 6) Websters dictionary defines faith as "complete trust" and "firm belief in something for which there is no proof."

Also, towards the middle of the book he has a chapter on love, saying that people should love inanimate objects as well as people. However he takes it too far when he says "...inanimate things do sense love." And the worst part, "It has been scientifically demonstrated that metal atoms respond differently to different personalities."
What!?!?
Besides some minor details such as the above it is still a pretty good book with a lot of good information, and I would still reccomend it.

Much better than Goddess by Mistake!
By Lyn
Carolina Francesca Santoro is a 43-year-old Italian-American woman who lives in Tulsa Oklahoma and owns a bakery called Pani Del Goddess. After Lina realizes that her business is in major debt and she might have to declare bankruptcy, she decides that she needs to expand her menu to make more money for her business. After looking through half a dozen old Italian cookbooks from a used book store, Lina opens a cookbook entitled The Italian Goddess Cookbook and finds a recipe for Italian pizza. The recipe involves chanting to the Goddess of the Harvest, Demeter. (One problem I had was that the author didn't use Demeter's and Persephone's Italian names, Ceres and Proserpine, but that's not really a big deal). By saying this chant and asking for help with her bakery, Lina got Demeter's attention, and the Goddess decides to switch Lina and Persephone. The dead souls of the Underworld are calling to Demeter because they want the comfort of a goddess, and Demeter believes that her daughter Persephone, Goddess of Spring, could light the darkness in the Underworld. However, Persephone is young and immature, and Demeter decides to send her to the mortal's world to experience life there, and manage Lina's bakery. In the meantime, Lina will switch places with Persephone to return Demeter's favor, and will visit the Underworld as the Goddess of Spring for six months.

Lina and Hades soon find that they are falling in love, but Lina's conscience can't rest because she promised Demeter that she won't let anyone know that she isn't really Persephone, but she longs to tell Hades. She is also worried that Hades only loves her for her body, which is really Persephone's. The other problem is that Lina has to leave Hades and the Underworld forever in 6 months.

While I liked P.C. Cast's first book, Goddess by Mistake, it seemed a little long-winded and dull at points. After reading this book, I see that Cast has polished her writing skills a lot since then. Goddess of Spring flows MUCH better, and I couldn't put it down!

I also think that Cast fares very well in writing about classical mythology. I loved her descriptions of the Gods and Goddesses, and the Underworld. She paints beautiful, vivid pictures of Hades' Palace, the Elysian Fields, and the dark Tartarus.

I loved how much mythology was woven into this book. The myth of Eurydice and Orpheus was incorporated very well into the story, as was the story of Dido and Aeneas. Cerberus, the dread steeds of Hades, and Charon were also mentioned, as well as the River of Styx, and the River of Forgetfulness, Lethe, which allows one's soul to be reborn in a mortal's body.

I also liked how the reader was able to get to know the real Persephone a bit, and got to see how well she fared in the modern, mortal world.

The romance in this book was much better than Goddess by Mistake, because it wasn't just about lust; it was about soul mates and how little one's outer appearance matters. It was so sweet and actually almost made me cry at one point.

The ending was also done very well, in my opinion. Very interesting, and it was actually how I thought it would end.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes romance or mythology!

Wonderful Adult Fairy Tale
By Elaine C McTyer
The Goddess Demeter feels that Persephone is to immature to handle the problems in the realm of the Dead.

Carolina Santoro needs help with her bakery. She finds an old book of receipes dedicated to the Goddess Demeter. Following a receipe she invokes Demeter.

Demeter suggests that she change bodies with Persephone so the the Goddess of Spring can save her bakery and she who is more mature, can fix the problems in Hades realm.

This is a wonderful adventure full of magic, humor, and romance. The playful mix of myth and reality is stunning. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more.

Cast's best Goddess book so far
By Moria Vulcanus
Maybe if I hadn't already read Cast's previous Goddess books I might have rated this higher. It definitely is the best of the three considering the quality of her writing, the plot, and the setting. The book doesn't get going until Lina changes places with Persephone, but at that point the simple story draws you in and moves quickly. Before that though, unfortunately, the writing is frequently awkward and tedious to slog through. It's as if Cast wasn't interested in that part of the story herself.

This story follows the same outline of events and includes basically the same characters as Cast's previous two Goddess books with only a change of settings and names. There's the ritual, the surprisingly easy changing of worlds and bodies with very little homesickness by the main character. There's the guy she instantly finds true love with, the woman she instantly makes best friends with and who is also her servant. There are the many scenes where she explores her new clothes, her new bathroom. She has fabulous sex. It's all the same as before - just done a little better. This may be partly partly why I seem less impressed by the book than other reviewers here. I hope Cast has worn the formula out by now and will try something new in the future. Also, please, stop with the endless bad puns. One thing new this time is a particularly creepy scene where Lina is bathing while Hades is off in the bushes watching and pleasuring himself. That's not romantic and it could have been left out.

I also can not understand why Cast made such a point of making Lina an Italian who owns an Italian bakery, uses Italian curses, and who finds an old Italian cookbook with the ritual that gets everything going. Why do this if the Gods and myths used for the story were all Greek? Why not just make Lina Greek? Why have an Italian cookbook with an invocation to Demeter instead of Ceres? Probably a lot of readers won't care about this but for me, it was incredibly distracting and sloppy. All these negatives do take a toll on an otherwise fun, quick read and leaving a slightly bad aftertaste, which is why I rate the book as I did.

In Bed With....
By Book Lover from GA
I picked up this book because it has a lot of short stories by authors I have read and liked or just simply read. While there is a table of contents, all of the authors have used pseudonyms, so you have no idea who wrote what. The pseudonyms are quite funny. They are based on the names of their first pets and their street.

Some of the stories are wonderful and some are confusing. They range from completely erotic to slightly.

It'll be fun trying to find out who wrote what.

some stories good and some boring, and some unbelievable. I was disappointed with the fact that these were supposedly good writers, and I obviously didn't appreciate some of the stories.

Nothing to be ashamed of, unfortunately
By Vanessa Wu
The noteworthy thing about this book is that all the writers are successful, established female authors writing under pseudonyms. You'd think this allowed them to be wild and unrestrained but, quite the reverse. With one or two exceptions, where the stories are playful and funny, there is a heavy pall of propriety hanging over these stories and I was very disappointed in them. It's as if the authors are only pretending to write erotic stories. This is what happens, I suppose, when you are commissioned to write something for an anthology and the editors are egging you on and promising you anonymity even though you are a famous name.

The most interesting thing about these stories is the game you are obliged to play of guessing who wrote what. If the names ever do come out, none of them has anything to be ashamed of. Which is a shame. It is a great idea for an anthology but it's a wasted opportunity I think.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of Harris's winning second supernatural caper to feature Harper Connelly (after 2005's Grave Sight), a skeptical anthropology professor, Clyde Nunley, tests Harper's gift of clairvoyance in a historic Memphis cemetery, where Harper correctly senses a fresh corpse in the wrong grave. Strangely, the body turns out to be a missing 12-year-old girl, Tabitha Morgenstern, whom Harper failed to locate in Nashville on a case two years earlier. The hotel suite of Harper and her manager and stepbrother, Tolliver Lang, both of whom fall under suspicion, becomes a magnet for a medley of amusing characters, including Memphis cops, Tabitha's assorted relatives and a drunken Clyde Nunley, who, shortly after accusing Harper of fraud, is found dead in the same grave as Tabitha. Peppered with the author's trademark deadpan wit, this book should help make Harper and Tolliver as popular as Sookie Stackhouse, the heroine of Harris's vampire mystery series (Definitely Dead, etc.). Author tour. (Sept. 26)

From Booklist
After Harper Connelly was struck by lightning as a teenager, she developed an unusual ability--she is able to locate bodies and see how the victims died, although she cannot identify the murderers. Harper and her stepbrother, Tolliver Lang, are at Bingham College doing a demonstration for a class, identifying bodies and causes of death in an old graveyard, when Harper finds the body of Tabitha Morgenstern, a kidnapped young girl she had failed to locate months ago. To clear their names--the police consider Harper and Tolliver suspects in the crime--they set out to find the real killer. Harper and Tolliver are likable, well-developed characters whose unhappy past binds them together as they care for one another and work together. Harper craves normalcy as she wonders whether her talent is a gift or a curse. The supernatural elements are integrated believably into the plot in this engrossing mystery, the second in a series. Excellent sequel
By ellen
I must tell you I didn't quite like Grave Sight, the debut book of this series. But, this sequel, Grave Surprise, fell into place and looks to be another great series for Harris.
Harper and her half-brother Tolliver tried to find Tabitha Morgenstern in the past, and while doing a demonstration in a Memphis cemetery 2 years later, find her in an old grave. The mystery deepens as the police, FBI, and family of the lost girl as well as Harper and Tolliver deal with the mystery of how did the child end up from Nashville to Memphis.
The relationship between Harper and Tolliver is believable, though complex. What I felt in the shadows of the first book was confirmed in this book. The writing is crisp and well paced. The only thing I don't like in any book is longer chapters. But if that is the only minus..no prob.
I will look forward to more in this series.
And the Southern Vampire series we all love.
Grave Surprise is a good read.

An Unexpected Detection
By Arthur W Jordin
Grave Surprise (2006) is the second fantasy mystery novel in the Harper Connelly series, following Grave Sight. In the previous volume, the final confrontation and shootout exposes the secrets of almost everybody. Harper and Tolliver are lucky to get out of town alive.

In this novel, Harper is hired to give a demonstration for an occult studies class in a newly documented graveyard in Memphis, Tennessee. The contract is issued by Bingham College for the class of Professor Clyde Nonley. As far as Harper is concerned, the Professor is a professional jerk.

The graveyard is on the grounds of the college and a detailed list of burials and causes of death had been discovered about three months previously. At first, the professor enjoys directing Harper from grave to grave, but her detailed answers to his queries are beginning to upset his preconceptions. Then he directs her to a grave up against the fence around the cemetery.

At first, Harper declares the occupant to be a young girl and the professor gleefully states that she is wrong. Then Harper notices that another set of bones lies in a coffin below the girl's body. Then she suddenly recognizes the identity of the most recent body.

Tabitha Morgenstern had disappeared in Nashville about eighteen months prior to her rediscovery. Harper had been called in a month after the disappearance and had followed every possible lead within the Nashville area before giving up on the case. Maybe the body had been in Memphis even before she had started her search.

In this story, Joel Morgenstern and his first wife were originally from Memphis, but had moved to Nashville during their marriage. Whitney Morgenstern birthed Victor and then died from cancer in Nashville. Two years later, Joel married Diane and she raised her stepson from a baby. Then their daughter Tabitha was born in Nashville.

Since Harper had only known the Morgensterns in Nashville, she is definitely surprised to learn that the family is now living in Memphis. Joel had apparently brought his wife back home about a year ago. Since then, Diane has become pregnant and is expecting a son. She is very close to birthing the baby.

The Morgensterns are very grateful to Harper for finally finding the body of their daughter. They invite Harper and Tolliver over for lunch to share the food offerings from their friends. There Harper meets other members of the family, including Fred Hart, the father of Whitney and Felicia. Of course, both Harper and Tolliver know Felicia Hart as Victor's aunt. They also meet Joel's parents -- Judy and Ben -- and his brother David.

Harper and Victor had previously shared a moment of shared grief in Nashville, so he confides several bits of information with her at the luncheon. Interrupted before he can finish his confession, Harper is pleased that Victor later shows up at the hotel. Unhappily, so does his uncle David, who speaks somewhat coarsely at Harper and gets punched in the stomach by Tolliver.

This story seems to be a setup, for Tabitha had obviously been moved from another grave. Who had instigated the hiring of Harper to read the occupants of the old cemetery? Their only lead, Professor Nonley, is killed shortly after Tabitha's exhumation and then placed in the open grave.

This case reminds Harper of her missing sister Cameron. She had vanished while on her way home from school. Only her backpack had been recovered, despite years of searching by Harper. At least Tabitha's body had been found to provide closure for her parents.

Since this reviewer tends to become absorbed into the story, the conclusion came as a surprise. However, it would seem to be more obvious by hindsight. Harper should have been savvy enough to sense the murderer much earlier from personal contacts. Or maybe the truth is just easier to see after the facts are laid out for inspection. After all, Harper is not able to read the living as well as she does the dead.

One wonders why so many reviewers insist on comparing the author's different series, often to the determent of this series? Often authors start new series to try different ideas and maybe different treatments. So many reviewers of the first book in this series rejected it because of its dissimilarities with prior series. Should the author just keep on writing the same storyline long after the enjoyment has withered away? At least this volume seems to have been accepted so far without cries of dejection from disappointed reviewers.

Highly recommended for Harris fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of esoteric talents, personal development, and slowly budding romance.

-Arthur W. Jordin

Mystery and supernatural done right
By Amazon Customer
I loved seeing Harper's growth in this book. The little subtle shifts in her thinking about Tolliver before her big realization fit perfectly. I also loved that there were enough clues to piece together the whodunnit part if you were paying attention. The ending actually fit and all the clues were there to understand how it happened. Unfortunately, that is not the case with a lot of mysteries.

Someone is killing off the competition in the world of chick lit-and the results are "hilarious." (Andy Borowitz, author of The Borowitz Report: The Big Book of Shockers)

Lola Somerville has a husband and a new apartment in Brooklyn, but what she really wants is for her novel to make a splash. Unfortunately it hasn't even made a ripple. Then at a book party, Lola finds her author friend Mimi McKee with her throat slashed. When the bodies of It-Girl writers begin to pile up, Lola starts asking dangerous questions: Are the murders connected? Am I next? If not, um, why not? If I solve the mystery, then will my agent remember my name? As Lola digs deeper, the stakes grow higher. Will getting her hands on the killer- and the book deal bound to follow-mean losing the people she loves most?

From Publishers Weekly
Chick lit authors become a killer's target in this loving sendup of the popular genre from journalist Harris (Miss Media). After Mimi McKee, author of Gay Best Friend, has her throat slit with a shard from a broken martini glass, Lola Somerville, a 32-year-old freelance writer living in Brooklyn, determines to unmask the murderer. The investigation could help land Lola a new book deal and boost flat sales of her debut novel, Pink Slip. Is the fiendish killer "Reading Guy," a 40-something dweeb who stalks chick lit author signings? Or could it be Mimi's boyfriend, Quentin, a crossword puzzle composer? Then there's Wilma, the militant leader of the Jane Austen Liberation Front, who has no love for authors of low-brow literature. When not sleuthing or scribbling, Lola gabs on her cellphone to best friend Annabelle and leans on her "geek-hottie" husband, Doug, for support. Readers will down this fizzy "murder-tini" in one gulp. (June)

Page-Turning Spoof Perfect For Fans of Chick Lit and Cozy Mysteries
By Rachel Kramer Bussel
Lynn Harris has done it again, this time with a fast-paced mystery that author Lola Somerville is determined to solve. Lola is quirky, passionate, and determined to be taken seriously as a writer. In this case, that means she wants a piece of the action murdered-bestselling-chick-lit-author action, especially because she thinks being targeted for murder by this killer who's offing her friends and rivals is a sign that her star turn as an author is around the corner. Her obsession with seeing with checking for mentions herself in a chick lit gossip column is hilarious, and should ring true for those who Google themselves a little too often. There are plenty of other wacky characters here, like the woman in charge of the Jane Austen Liberation Front, which protests chick lit events, and "Reading Guy," who's often the only male around at bookstore signings. As trouble mounts, Lola's mom is looking out for her, too, getting on the internet and checking up on her daughter, to Lola's alternating chagrin and amusement.

Harris will keep readers guessing . . . when they're not laughing riotously. The "cameos" by famous people like "Alexandra Coltish" (Ann Coulter) and gentle and not-so-gentle ribbing of all sorts of proscriptive books telling women when to have kids and what to do about their careers make for fun guess-who? games. She also makes fun of computer geekery, Manhattan snobs, and Lola herself. In some ways, Harris's book could be called chick lit; even though she's got a married protagonist, the things she cares about are her friendships (sometimes catty, sometimes true), her career, gossip, her garden, and, of course, murder. But whether you ultimately think the book is chick lit or not isn't that important. If you're a fan of cozy mysteries, live in Brooklyn, work in publishing, or simply want a great book to take to the beach with you this summer, check out Death by Chick Lit.

Lola Somerville, an endearingly flawed protagonist
By Julia Douglass
Lynn Harris has given us Lola Somerville, an endearingly flawed heroine who's professional envy is clouding her judgment and leading her into physical danger. While she hones her mystery solving skills, "who killed her authoress colleagues and is she next?" She also tries to tune out her inner voice that compares the success of her last book and press to their's, (they had more success than Lola which was unfair!) for she knows it is wrong and it is making her seem small. Also her professional jealousy is not helping with either A. Her Career, and B. Solving the murder. On the plus side A. She is alive and B. They are not.... but is she next? This book is a farcical hoot, complete with lots of careerist neurosis. Bravo Lynn Harris!

3.5 stars - a fun summer read

DEATH BY CHICK LIT by Lynn Harris
August 12, 2007

Rating: 3.5 Stars

I read DEATH BY CHICK LIT earlier this summer, and it is a good summer read - light and fun. The main character, Lola Somerville, is a writer who is frustrated because HER book for some reason isn't catching on, despite the fact that it is chick lit and it seems all the writers she knows are churning out chick lit books and ending up on the best seller lists. Not her, unfortunately.

Or maybe it IS fortunately... because she also notices that one by one, her fellow chick lit authors (at least the ones that made it to the best seller lists) are being killed off one by one. Lola is asked to help solve the mystery, hoping this will lead to a book deal.

DEATH BY CHICK LIT was not the perfect book but I enjoyed it because it made fun of the chick lit genre that had taken the book world by storm upon the release of BRIDGET JONES DIARY. While the story in itself kept me absorbed, I had a problem with some of the writing. Maybe there needed to be better editing of the book as a whole. On the other hand, it was a fast read that kept me interested until the end. DEATH BY CHICK LIT is another fun summer read that fans should not overlook.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Cornwell's 15th novel to feature Dr. Kay Scarpetta (after 2005's Predator) delivers her trademark grisly crime scenes, but lacks the coherence and emotional resonance of earlier books. Soon after relocating to Charleston, S.C., to launch a private forensics lab, Scarpetta is asked to consult on the murder of U.S. tennis star Drew Martin, whose mutilated body was found in Rome. Contradictory evidence leaves Scarpetta, the Italian carabinieri and Scarpetta's lover, forensic psychologist Benton Wesley, stumped. But when she discovers unsettling connections between Martin's murder, the body of an unidentified South Carolina boy and her old nemesis, the maniacal psychiatrist Dr. Marilyn Self, Scarpetta encounters a killer as deadly as any she's ever faced. With her recent switch from first- to third-person narration, Cornwell loses what once made her series so compelling: a window into the mind of a strong, intelligent woman holding her own in a profession dominated by men. Here, the abrupt shifts in point of view slow the momentum, and the reader flounders in excessive forensic minutiae.

From Booklist
Forensic trailblazer Kay Scarpetta faces numerous battles and challenges in this latest entry in the series, which seems to be losing a little steam but still has a large following. Scarpetta and her sidekicks struggle to establish a private practice that provides autopsy services for jurisdictions that lack a local pathologist. Complex and unhealthy relationships grow stranger, and personal issues threaten to overshadow unfolding mysteries. Reading’s highly capable narration is the strength of this production, but it is still hard to overlook the distracting repetitiveness of backstories that explain circumstances and relations to new listeners. Reading’s darker tones are well suited to the many characters, and she offers a wide range of distinctive accents, including Italian and southern U.S., with ease. For fans who find solace in the Scarpetta formula. --Jeanette Larson

Review
If Michelin rated mysteries, this would get three stars. "Book of the Dead" by Patricia Cornwell. Charles Dickens would be impressed with both characters in this book and their names, e.g. Dr, Marilyn Self, a malignantly conniving deranged TV psychiatrist. The tales heroine, Kay Scarpetta, is a private forensic pathologist grappling with the murder of a famous teenage American tennis champ in Rome. At the same time she has to deal with the murder of a malnourished and badly beaten child. Scarpettas relations with her colleagues, not to mention those with her significant other, are tumultuous and tangled. All these characters have varying levels of unredeeming traits.
What a walloping, riveting mix of mystery, adventure and psychology, author Cornell certainly is skilled at dissecting the not always attractive innards of human nature.

oh dear, oh dear.
By frumiousb
Dear Patricia Cornwell,

I wrote you a letter back in 2005 after you released Trace. I was, quite frankly, worried about the direction that you were taking poor Kay Scarpetta. And I must say that The Book of the Dead has not done anything to set my worries to rest.

I'll start with the things that I liked. I read once that you should always open a critique with things that you like. I liked that you let Scarpetta finally make fun of herself for some of the conspiracies which she imagines are aimed in her direction. It beggared the imagination that absolutely everybody was out to get the poor woman. In this book, many people were *not* out to get her. And that was a refreshing change. And for that I give you an extra star.

But, oh dear, the rest of the book...

First of all, shock schlock is one of the most virulent diseases of modern airplane novels. The world doesn't need another entry in the race to find The Most Sadistic Serial Killer Ever. Just say no. Please work with a nice straightforward killing, and solve it! I realize that this sounds terribly retro. However, I am tired of seeing writers burn their creativity in an effort to imagine a string of ever more icky things to do with eye sockets and bath tubs.

Second, you failed to get my disbelief to suspend. Too many coincidences. Too many links between all the characters and killings. Too much. Way too much. My disbelief actually didn't even levitate, let alone suspend. Honestly, I think that you ought to have a serious chat with your editor on this point. That is the person who should get paid to warn you that you have broken your plot. And you should listen to them if they do make warnings like that.

Last but not least, Dr. Self. Drop her. Drop this thread. Drop this character. I repeat the "oh dear, oh dear" when it comes to Dr. Self. She is not readable. She is not interesting. She is not anything. Let poor Kay settle down in Charleston without any more outside fuss than her already tangled relationships provide.

Actually, that brings me to a suggestion. Once upon a time, detective novels did this quaint thing where the world around them featured as a character in the work. The novelists used the local color and the detective became a vehicle through which the reader could explore the world. You seemed as though you kind of were starting to get at this with Bull. That was good, but then you got distracted. You wandered off and forgot about him. It was sad. Why don't you try that the next time?

I keep reading your books, largely because I still have a strong affection for Kay from back in the day. I also kind of like that you are one of the few mystery writers who allows your character change, and doesn't keep them encased in a plot-like amber. Please don't make me regret liking you for that, okay?

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

the frumious bandersnatch.

The last Kay Scarpetta Book I will ever read!
By Brannan Villee
I don't normally write online reviews, but I am taking the time to write this one in the hopes that I can save someone from spending their hard-earned money on this book.

I have been reading Patricia Cornwell since the beginning. I have always loved her characters and looked forward to new Scarpetta novels, even though they have been less frequent in past years.

The last Scarpetta book, "Predator", was tough to get through...and "Book of the Dead" takes it to a new low. It seems as though everything is over-written. Just get to the point, already! Cornwell spends too much time over-describing and not enough time telling the story. It's almost painful to read. At times, I just wanted to put the book down, which is sad. The main characters, once enjoyable, are now conflicted and unpleasant. The story was disjointed and hard to follow, and once the killer was uncovered/caught, Cornwell did a poor job of wrapping up the story and bringing closure to the reader.

If possible, I would give this book 0 stars. Shame on Patricia Cornwell and her editors for bringing this book to market and subjecting loyal fans to such a terrible piece of fiction.

Scarpetta is So Dead
By Priscilla Audia
"Ellen" from Ellen from Atlanta said what I would say in spades. Patricia, my dear, you gave me hours of undone housework reveling in your books; you gave me gore, intrigue and my favorite, forensic medicine. Why was everyone so angry in "Dead"? You left three people hanging in literary space which means you are going to have to write, hopefully not three books, to put them to rest. But then you aren't good at that - Boom! Benson is gone - Boom! Bensen is back - no good explanation. Patricia Cornwell has left the building. Tess Gerritson bring it on - you've yet to fail me!

An inspiring Chritmas story
By B. Smith
This is the fourth in a series of Christmas books that Thomas Kincaid has taken a part in the writing thereof. The novels are set in the ficticious town of Cape Light and as you read each one you become more familiar with the citizens and their families and the daily lives they lead.
There is always a test of faith and courage involved. This new novel is especially charming and inspiring. Trust, doubt, belief and values make up the content.
I found "A Christmas Visitor' especially moving as each person faced and solved their problems with the aid of some special people and an 'Angel' that visits Cape Light for the Christmas season.
I look forward every year to Kincaid's Christmas stories.
The other four books are equally as good as they too take place in Cape Light just in a different time of year.
