excellent historical cozy
By A Customer
In Victorian London, wealthy spinster Olive Kettering hears footsteps and tries to flee to safety, but knows someone is following her. She gets out of her mansion and runs to a person she is happy to see only that individual shoots her in the head. Inspector Witherspoon, who has a 100% homicide clearance rate thanks to his servants secretly assisting him, leads the inquiry.

He learns no one liked Olive, not her peers or servants whom she treated like vermin. She was also estranged from her blood relatives, Dorien who refused to get married and Patricia of whom Olive disapproved of the man she married. Olive was involved with the Society of the Humble Servant led by Reverend Samuel Richards. The victim rejected the concept he was a con artist as she believed in a vengeful god like he preaches. All the suspects offer viable alibis, but some lied. Using the information Witherspoon unknowingly gives her, the housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries and her team is determined to find the killer for their boss, not aware of the danger this endeavor provides.

Every Mrs. Jefferies historical cozy is a special unique treat as the recurring characters change and grow, and this time a new member to the household joins the crew and Betsy provides a surprising revelation. The whodunit is straightforward fun with Mrs. Jefferies and the rest of the servants finding clues and Mrs. Jeffries feeding them to her employer with him remaining clueless to what she is doing. The sleuthing cast makes for a wonderful Victorian mystery.

Another great Mrs. Jeffries Mystery
By drebbles
Olive Kettering was not a very nice person and had very few friends, so no one is particularly surprised when she is murdered during a nasty storm. It is up to Inspector Gerald Witherspoon and Constable Barnes to find her killer and they have plenty of suspects to deal with. But Witherspoon has a lot of help with this case, even if he doesn't know it - his household staff, led by housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries, are working behind the scenes to make sure he catches the killer.

"Mrs. Jeffries Speaks Her Mind" is the 27th book in Emily Brightwell's engaging mystery series set in Victorian England, a series that never disappoints. Despite there being so many books in the series it never gets stale, with the characters growing stronger in each book. In this particular book it is maid Betsy who takes center stage as she is happily married to Smythe but adjusting to not living with the rest of the servants and afraid she will be replaced by newcomer Phyllis. This storyline is an example of what makes this series so strong - the characters. They think of each other as family (which is especially evident in this book. I had wondered how Brightwell would handle the series now that Betsy and Smythe are married and she does an excellent job.

As for the mystery elements, like all the other books in the series they are well done and the mystery is well plotted with plenty of suspects and some good motives. The fun in this series is watching both Witherspoon and his staff tried to solve the case and finding clues, as they do, and trying to figure out the solution before Mrs. Jeffries does. Astute readers will pick up some clues that Brightwell scatters throughout the book but it may still come as a bit of a surprise when the killer is revealed. The ending is action packed and danger filled and will keep readers at the edge of their seats for a few pages.

"Mrs. Jeffries Speaks Her Mind" is another great cozy mystery by Emily Brightwell.

I love the Mrs. Jeffries and the Inspector series. This one was as excellent as all the others. I wish I could get the ones from 1994-2000. I didn't discover this series until after those were out of print. While reading, I become part of the household family.

Into the Fire, by Bill Yenne

A gripping novel of the National Guard in Afghanistan.

They had never planned on being soldiers. They were regular American citizens, ?weekend warriors? in the National Guard, suddenly yanked from their everyday lives and regular duties?attending college, coaching teams, fighting forest fires?and dropped into firefights along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

A California surfer, a Mexican-American immigrant, an African-American auto mechanic, and a high school teacher and mother?they answered the call. In no time they were facing car bombs, AK-47s, and rocket-propelled grenade launchers in a world of poverty, terror, and incomprehensible human cruelty.

Unflinching, realistic, and timely, Into the Fire is a riveting novel of what?s happening in Afghanistan now?as the men and women of the National Guard become soldiers, casualties, and heroes.

From Publishers Weekly
In this dark, gritty portrayal of Americans at war in Afghanistan, Yenne serves up buckets of blood, gore and tragedy in this not-for-the-squeamish novel about four National Guardsmen sent to fight. Justin is a lazy California surfer dude flunking out of college. Jimmy Ray is a black Georgia auto mechanic suppressing a lot of anger. Luis is a Colorado Hispanic chasing the American dream. And Cindy is an Iowa schoolteacher who never thought she'd be sent to war. Within days of arriving in Afghanistan, all four are involved in bloody, chaotic combat that will forever change their lives. Justin and Jimmy Rays friendship is forged by battle. Luis displays an uncanny talent for tracking the Taliban, and Cindy discovers courage she never knew she had. Three of them make it home, and Yenne offers no tenderness in their homecoming. Loaded with exciting and graphic battlefield action, Yenne's portrayal of men and women in combat is authentic down to the smell of explosives and the stink of sweat and fear. (Dec.)

AFGHAN ARMAGEDDEON
By Matthew Huepfel
This a serious novel about the affects of the Afghan war on a group of National Guard members. It reminded me of many novels
written about the the "lost generation" of the Great War. My only criticism is the author took great artistic license in
casualty numbers to make his point.

Witchling (Sisters of the Moon, Book 1), by Yasmine Galenorn

We’re the D’Artigo sisters: Half-human, half-Faerie, we’re savvy—and sexy—operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency.  But our mixed-blood heritage short-circuits our talents at all the wrong times.  My sister Delilah shapeshifts into a tabby cat whenever she’s stressed.  Menolly’s a vampire who’s still trying to get the hang of being undead.  And me?  I’m Camille—a wicked-good witch.  Except my magic’s as unpredictable as the weather, as my enemies are about to find out the hard way...

At the Wayfarer Inn, a portal to Otherworld and the local hangout for humans and beasties alike, a fellow operative, Jocko, has been murdered.  Every clue points to Shadow Wing, the soul-munching, badass leader of the Subterranean Realms.  He’s made it clear that he aims to raze humankind to the ground, turning both Earth and Otherworld into his private playground.  Our assignment:  Keep Shadow Wing and his minions from creeping into Earth via the Wayfarer.  The demons figure they’re in like Flynn.  After all, with only my bumbling sisters and me standing in the way, how can they miss?  But we’ve got a secret for them:  Faulty wiring or not, nobody kicks ass like the D’Artigo girls...

From Publishers Weekly
The first in an engrossing new series about conflict in the magic modern world—as told by the half-human, half-Faerie D'Artigo sisters—the latest from Galenorn (One Hex of a Wedding) is a whimsical reminder of fantasy's importance in everyday life. Narrator Camille is a good witch with unpredictable powers who runs a Seattle bookstore while working as an Otherworld Intelligence operative, sent Earthside to keep an eye on things. When an operative from the Wayfaerer, a human/Faerie hangout, is killed, Camille springs into action with her sisters Delilah, a werecat, and Menolly, a freshly minted vampire. Tracing the murder back to evil demon leader Shadow Wing, the sisters find evidence of a far-reaching plot, but the Otherworld Intelligence Agency offers no help, stifled by bureaucratic red tape and a nasty Otherworld battle. Galenorn's gallery of rogues is an imaginative delight, each species and personality carefully crafted. Though the plot can drag, effusive characters and pretty writing ("I whispered, and the stars heard me from behind their cloud cover and answered") will lead readers through to the much-anticipated final battle. From Booklist
Half human, half faerie, Camille and her two sisters act as Earthside operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency, a gig they feel is more a way of keeping them at a distance than any promotion. With the Faerie court in disarray and a new demon lord in the Subterranean Realms making a power play to rule the known worlds, the sisters find their shaky magic and their allies the only line of defense. An emerging voice in chick-lit fantasy and mystery, Galenorn, who also writes as India Ink, branches off into romantic territory in the first of her Sisters of the Moon series. Romance readers looking for romance balanced with other elements may be a bit disappointed that the love story ranks a distant second here. However, those who enjoy Kim Harrison or Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series will feel right at home. Well-crafted fantasy abounds here, along with great character chemistry and an old-fashioned gumshoe--detective feel. Nina Davis

If Witchling were a soda it'd be diet.
By Rhianna Walker
Attempt at a witty review title aside I think it conveys my overall opinion pretty well. If you love paranormals with heroines akin to Buffy or the Halliwell sisters this is right up your alley. Any comparison to literary heroines would bring those gals down just a little.

Meet the D'Artigo sisters, mom was a human, dad is fae. Oldest sister Camille, a witch, tells this first story. Operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency they are the protectors of the line between Otherworld (their home realm) and Earth. When a baddy from the Subterranean Realms threatens to upset the balance between the three realms Camille and sisters Delilah, a shapeshifter, and Menolly, a vampire, have to kick some bad guy butt. Throw in the rich setting of the Pacific Northwest and some hot guys to keep the lust tension going and you have the perfect light reading.

While not quite as well built, planned and plotted as other heroines in the genre don't count these girls out. Characters like Rachel Morgan or Mercy Thompson are the caloric equivalent of a regular cola and these would make a great diet substitute. Lighter reading for in between the meatier series's. Enjoy!

A fun Urban Fantasy read
By Diane Raetz
Three sisters, half human, half fae work for the Otherworld Investigative Services and are stationed in Seattle.

The good: The worldbuilding is excellent. Full blooded humans (FBH) live side by side with creatures from the Other World including, but not limited to giants, sidthe, cryptos, weres and vampires. Unlike most paranormal books the author makes an effort to make the sidthe, weres and vampires different than humans. FBHs are both facinated and repulsed by the recently revealed fae, some gawk and other protest the fae's presence on earth. The unrest in the Other World is completely believable as is the demon's desire to invade Earth and the Other World.

The bad: Although the relationships between the sisters is believable and the cast of characters is enjoyable, the relationship between Camille and her boyfriends is not. I found it impossible to believe that after six years of celibacy she would take two lovers, and consider a third, in the course of one week. Also the story is set up so that Camille's magic shorts out, but it always seems to happen in the most helpful manner.

In my opinion the book is misclassified. It is paranormal or urban fantasy, not a paranormal romance. There is no relationship resolution and to be honest the romantic entanglements are the least important part of the story. For those looking for a romance novel, this isn't for you. For those looking to start a new Urban Fantasy series, I can definately recommend Witchling.

Sorry, just plain bad writing...
By R. Cooper
Where to start? This unoriginal book is an attempt to cash in on the rising popularity of urban paranormal fantasy (done well by authors like Laurell K. Hamilton or Jim Butcher) but falls way, way short. Nothing is believable, not the characters (who all talk exactly the same - like a teenager, from the human to the ancient dragon), the relationships, or the setting itself. There's a huge lack of successful world-building here. But the absolute worst thing would have to be the dialogue. I can't say how many times I wanted to toss this book for the trite and cheesy dialogue alone. If a friend had given me this book asking if I thought it could be published, I would have said absolutely not. Yet here it is, and people are actually giving it good reviews??? I wouldn't even expect bad young adult fiction to be THIS bad. (I like YA fiction.)

Other examples of bad writing: a couple of the bad guys' names are "Bad A** Luke" and "The Psycho Babbler". The book is always understating or overstating things - characters laugh at inappropriate times and I can't even count how many times the main character "shakes" herself every time she has a [gasp] thought. Even a couple gratuitous sex scenes couldn't save this book. One of my favorite examples of awful writing... "My arm burned like a mother-sucker." Direct quote, no editing on my part.

The sad thing is that I actually wanted to like this book. Galenorn writes good pagan nonfiction. Sadly, she should stick with that. Big time pass on this series - I won't be reading the others. The only reason I finished it was because it was a gift. If I'd stopped after 30 pages like I wanted to, I would have settled on 2 stars for effort, but after slogging through this waste of paper, I'm giving it 1 for my suffering.

Sid knows the perils of racing all too well, but in his day jockeys didn't usually cross the finish line with three .38 rounds in the chest-which is how he found Huw Walker, the winner of a coveted race only a few hours earlier. Now Halley's quest for answers will push him to his very limits-both on and off the track.

From Publishers Weekly
Beloved series character Sid Halley, a champion jockey, makes a welcome return in the latest fast-paced crime novel from bestseller Francis (Come to Grief). When a crippling injury forces Halley into retirement, he begins a second career as a PI. Thanks to his doggedness and integrity, he attracts many clients, including a mysterious government figure who asks him to assess the unintended consequences of Britain's legalization of Internet gambling, and others who wish him to unravel the nest of puzzles surrounding the murder of a jockey, Huw Walker, suspected of throwing races. This time, the sinister forces arrayed against him have an unexpected weapon—threats of violence against Halley's new significant other. The writing and action are as crisp as ever, though longtime Francis fans may find the plot a little familiar. BOMC and Mystery Guild main selection.(Sept.)

From Booklist
After an absence of six years, Dick Francis comes thundering up the track with a thriller that resoundingly demonstrates that the acclaimed author, if anything, may have gained a few steps. Francis re-summons his most popular protagonist, Sid Halley, a champion jockey turned sleuth, whose racing career was shattered when a horse fell on him and then an adversary mangled his left hand. Last seen in Come To Grief (1995), Halley, who brings racing knowledge, spirit, and resilience to whatever case he tackles, remains one of the most exquisitely developed characters in crime fiction. This adventure starts with Cheltenham Gold Cup day, during which one racegoer drops dead, a horse collapses after a stirring win, and the victorious jockey is discovered shot to death in the parking lot. Juggling several sleuthing assignments, Halley finds himself working not only for the father of the slain jockey but also for a Lord who wants to know if the races his horses run in are being fixed. The plot keeps delivering shocks as Halley's investigation is derailed by threats and violence against his new love. And Francis once again proves himself a master of detail, seamlessly incorporating fascinating facts about DNA technology, myoelectric hands, Internet gambling, and even stitches. Wow. RANKS WITH HIS BEST
By Kay's Husband
I'm not going to give away any of the plot, but will go as far as describing some of it elements. This latest book contains aspects of infidelity, murder, race fixing, internet betting coupled with organized crime, expensive designer clothing, and DNA profiling. Quite alot for one book.

In addition, a Fleet Street newspaper called "The Pump" figures strongly into the plot with many pages focusing on Sid Halley's private life, which ultimately will offer pleasant surprise to most readers.

One enjoyable aspect of UNDER ORDERS is that jockeys, race horses, and horse racing in England in both specific and general are given attention as no recent Dick Francis has done. In some regard it seemed that his books were moving outside the actual world of racing to become novels using racing only as deep background. Not so in this latest book, the world of racing with all its elements once again moves front and center.

The overall "voice" of this book matches the previous ones, yet every once in awhile something different comes through. A new wind is blowing through this book, a wind that is very refreshing and now that Sid Halley's personal life has taken a new, joyous turn can another Sid Halley book be far behind?

Though the ending was somewhat less than I would have expected, I'm certain most readers of Dick Francis books will enjoy the book. The book marks a return to the reasons I began reading him in the first place. This book leaves the reader looking forward to subsequent books.

This book should be an enormous success for Dick Francis and pity the unfortunate reader who only reads Dick Francis in softcover, for he or she will have to wait several months more before they too can enjoy this new release from a master writer.

Semper Fi.

This just in: Look for a new hardcover mystery from Dick Francis in September, 2007. He and his son, Felix, have a brand new novel coming off the presses!!!

Spend an evening with an old friend
By Kaylee Ranger
I discovered Dick Francis 26 years ago, and the first book I read was the first Sid Halley--Odds Against. Francis does a fine job of updating Sid, Charles, and the rest as men of the 21rst century. This is Francis's best book since Straight--and that's a mighty long time ago. It should be clear to all now just who was writing these books even if his wife, Mary, was his partner.

This is vintage Francis--characters are introduced in a paragraph early on in such a way that you really know them when their time comes to act, die, or be of use to Sid. The dry humor is there--the compassion, the wit, the wisdom. We've gone 5 long years with no Dick Francis novels, and 15 without a really, really good one. I just sank into it and got lost in the world of British racing as seen through the eyes of one of my favorite authors.

It's not for the uninitiated, though. There's plenty in the middle that is slow and personal--fans of Sid won't mind, but if folks haven't read Francis, this isn't the place to start. In truth, Francis reads especially well in order even though the majority of the books are stand-alones--the first five (Dead Cert, Nerve, For Kicks, Odds Against, and Flying Finish) are still my favorites.

Sid Halley is back
By Fred Camfield
The latest novel about ex-jockey turned PI Sid Halley. Many years have passed. Sid's investigations have moved away from the racing scene and he mainly does special investigations for a government agency and background checks on prospective employees for various clients. He is drawn back to the racetrack scene when the agency wants him to investigate gambling, psrticularly Internet gambling, because of pending legislation, and a horse owner wants him to investigate because the horses don't seem to be running as they should.

There are questions about fixing results for the benefit of bookies or gambling syndicates. If you are gambling on the Internet, on a site that is probably operated offshore, how do you know you can trust the people running the computer?? If you are gambling at a race track, someone may have found a way to fix the race results.

Sid Halley's investigations stir things up. People are killed. All is not as it seems, and there are some surprising discoveries about people who are involved. Sid is no friend of investigative reporters, but he is willing to use them when it suits his purpose, willing to give them a scoop if it exposes scum to the light of day.

There are some interesting sidelights in the story, including the attitudes of the House of Lords about its members. You may learn enough about gambling to become cautious. In Sid Halley's words, his best tip is "keep your money in your pocket."

The author draws on personal experience to write about horse racing, and the novel is well researched and well written. If you have an interest in the author, you might want to read his biography.

From the author of New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Beth Kery comes a story about an alluring woman-who learns that to understand desire, you have to let it run wild.

Genny loved her husband Max, but he lacked the sexual charge that was instead ignited by his business partner, Sean. Ruggedly handsome, Sean had a heart-stopping smile that made Genny weak. The more time they spent together, the stronger the attraction between them became. Then her husband offered to share her with Sean for one intoxicating night...

That night in the company penthouse, Max and Sean showed Genny the heights of ecstasy. But it was Sean who touched her very spirit, and one-onone, they were red hot. But as Genny learns, there's a price to pay for such impulsive pleasure. What began as a night of forbidden desire spirals into a whirlpool of murder, sensual submission, secrets, and a scorching passion that threatens to consume everyone it touches.

4 ½ stars for a lot of hot steamy erotic sex scenes. The story and characters are good but not the main reason to read it.
By Jane
STORY BRIEF:
Max hires Sean as COO in Max's security firm. Genny loves her husband Max, but she and Sean have a strong attraction. One night, Max initiates a menage a trois among the three of them. A few days later, Max is killed. Genny avoids Sean for three years. The story begins after those three years. Genny's house burns down, and she goes to the company penthouse for temporary housing. Sean just happens to be there. Genny is reluctant to stay there with him, but the snow storm and Sean convince her to stay at least one night. By the next day, lust has brought them together. Also Genny learns someone has broken into her clothing store and storage locker. Sean fears for her safety and helps her deal with these attacks and the mystery.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
Very hot sex scenes. A lot of sex scenes, and they are well done. There is more sex than story, but there is just enough story to keep you interested. There are mysteries about some happenings three years earlier. By the end of the book, the mysteries get solved. Sometimes the author has scenes which make me a little uncomfortable, but I like that. It's got an edgy feel. Sex scenes include ménage a trois MWM, bondage, whipping, sex toys, and rear door activity.

menage? who me?
By Agent Scully
This is an amazing, scorching, fantastic love story with a to-die-for hero. A ménage story you ask? Those who know me know I don't read erotic romances with ménages because I find them unromantic and unconvincing. Frankly I doubt I would have bought this one either, despite being a fan of Beth Kery. Luckily Beth herself very generously gave me a copy and I'm so grateful that she did. I should probably mention at this point that she did not ask me to review it in return. I'd probably feel a bit guilty if I didn't though, not to mention that I've now enjoyed 4 of her books and it's time I did a review. But mostly I'm writing this review because I want to assure my fellow ménages-not-'r'-us readers that this book is well worth reading and so romantic and hot, and not to fear it.

The 3 main characters are Sean, Genny and Max. Max has been dead for 3 years when the book starts, but with the numerous flashbacks and the pervasive effects of his manipulations in the present, he is definitely a major character. I didn't much like him to begin with, and the more his personality and scheming was revealed the more I disliked him. There is also a villain of sorts, since the unmasking of Max's killer is the driving force behind the suspense plot. But I can't help feeling the true villain of this piece is Max.

Genny is, or rather was, naive and rather gullible. Much younger than Max, he was a father figure of sorts to her and she was clueless about his true character or orientation. Though the blurb says that Genny loved Max, it seemed clear to me that she wasn't IN love with him, plus their sex life was tame tapering off to non-existent. In the present she is more enigmatic, holding her thoughts and feelings close to her chest, but the reader is aware that she suspects Sean killed her husband. In many ways Genny makes the biggest journey in this story. She is awakened to the truth about Max, she is awakened sexually by Sean, and she comes to grips with her feelings and submissive desires.

Sean? Oh man what can I say about this guy? Intense, charming, dominant, tender, sexy, tenacious. For Beth Kery fans who found Vic somewhat insensitive and Shane somewhat, er, unhinged, I promise you will love Sean. He ranks right up there with Ryan for me. I've noticed that Beth's heros (and heroines) stint sometimes on the I Love You's. But not Sean. He loves Genny and he tells her so, and not just at the end of the book either. His feelings show with every touch and kiss and gesture. The moment she appears back in his life he's determined to regain her trust and get close to her again. He's also determined to get through her barriers and make her admit she loves him too. He suspects she may have killed her husband but he doesn't really care, his loyalty to her is absolute.

Now back to the ménage. I appreciated that it was presented in a realistic way with real consequences, not as a be-all and end-all "ultimate pleasure" thing. Genny's uncertainty showed during the scene, as did Sean's although he was more eager to seize his one and only opportunity to be with Genny. Things are awkward between them afterwards, both immediately and later. Both Genny and Sean regret what happened, although again he less so because at least he has his memories for 3 long years. Sean and Max quarrel violently. Genny plans to leave Max. A mess all around. As for the scene itself, I didn't expect to find it hot. But when the focus lingered on Sean and Genny for long periods, it was. The intensity of his feelings for her made every touch sizzle. It felt like Sean and Genny making love, not Sean, Genny and Max having a threesome. And I got caught up in it more than once. Then Max would say something or do something, and I was jolted out of the mood, and I just wanted to b1tch slap him and tell him to shut up and get out of there already.

The other sex scenes are scorching hot, fairly kinky, and very numerous. Note: spanking and anal is included (there isn't any in the threesome, thank goodness). The plot is interesting with a twist at the end, and the suspense is good. The atmosphere is angsty and emotionally charged. But the best reason to read this one remains Sean. I love him. He can call me "girl", chain me in his lap, and feed me warm buttered toast any time :-)

5 Hearts from TRS!
By Tina Pavlik
Kudos to Beth Kery for penning an erotic journey about how too much power can corrupt and how strong intense sexual awakening can be overpowering. I nicknamed the characters Manipulative Max, Scorching Sexy Sean, and Gullible Genny. Genny's tame relationship with Max had not prepared her for her reaction to Sean. Sean's arrival in their lives showed Genny what a relationship could be like and also gave Max the ammunition he needed to further his sick plot. Misunderstandings and insecurities caused Genny to not speak or see Sean for three years. The fire at her home brought them back together but it was Sean's perseverance that kept her with him. The snowstorm that trapped them in the penthouse also unleashed the storm of passion between them that had been brewing for longer than they knew. Sean had a dominant personality that was the perfect foil for Genny's budding sexuality. Their time together causes them both to question what happened three years ago and they begin to realize just how twisted and sick Max had been. Well developed characters and a unique storyline will hold your interest in this book. The suspense of wondering just what went so wrong after their ménage years ago is cleverly written and the twist added close to the end of the book will neatly bring it all together. But make no mistake, the intense and erotic love shared between dominant Sean and awakening submissive Genny will have you turning the pages long into the night and is really what this book is all about. - Lisa Freeman

Not a Novelization Of The Game
By Ellie O.
It should be noted that while this is a great read for fans of the other Splinter Cell/"David Michaels" Clancy novels, this is NOT a novelization of the game (Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction) it shares a title with. The book and game series do not coexist in the same Clancyverse, so to speak, and while both game and novel star a rogue Sam Fisher, his reasons and goals are completely different to fit the established backstories of their respective mediums. This is good news for Splinter Cell fans who want more and original Sam Fisher tales, but not for anyone who thought they were getting a sneak peak at the fifth game that has been long in development.

4/5 (Sorry, new "Michaels", but Raymond Benson is a tough act to follow. Still a great read.)

From Publishers Weekly
Agatha-winner Bowen successfully mixes Wodehousian farce with a whodunit plot in her fourth 1930s mystery starring Lady Georgiana Rannoch (after 2009's Royal Flush). When the queen asks Georgiana, a distant relative of George V, to attend the wedding of a royal cousin and old schoolmate, Princess Maria Theresa, in Romania, the impoverished 22-year-old must scramble to come up with a maid to maintain appearances. She ends up with Queenie Hepplewhite, a clumsy if well-meaning servant who lost a previous job after setting fire to her mistress's clothing. Once in Romania, the pair find themselves in the midst of a sensitive murder case at the remote castle where the nuptials are to take place. Field Marshal Pirin, head of the Bulgarian army and a close adviser to his country's king, collapses during a festive meal and is later found to have been poisoned. Bowen once again demonstrates her mastery of the light, romantic mystery.

From Booklist
In this fourth Royal Spyness mystery, penniless Lady Georgiana Rannoch desperately seeks escape from both London and her dreadful relatives. Rescue comes from the queen, who asks Georgie to attend a royal wedding in Transylvania. Georgie is the thirty-fourth person in line for the English throne, but she’s also an old schoolmate of the bride, Princess Maria Theresa of Romania. Georgie hires a young, inexperienced Cockney woman to be her maid; meets her overbearing traveling companion, Lady Middlesex, along with Miss Deer-Harte; and they all hie off to Transylvania. Once they’re at the old castle, a mystery man vexes Georgie (Could he be a vampire?); then the vulgar Bulgarian field marshal Pirin drops dead at dinner. Georgie, her erstwhile beau Darcy O’Mara, and bridegroom Prince Nicholas must solve the mystery or risk an international incident. Georgie also has to deal with Maria Theresa’s brother, Prince Siegfried, who has decided Georgie would be an ideal wife. Bowen keeps the mystery light and humorous, but the discerning reader will note the social problems underlying Georgie’s breezy narrative. --Kat Kan

Review
Agatha winner Bowen successfully mixes Wodehousian farce with a whodunit plot... she once again demonstrates her mastery of the light, romantic mystery.
-- Publisher's Weekly

As always, the delightful Lady Georgiana Rannoch is on the loose and getting into much more trouble than a person of her station should... Georgie is a modern girl with a penchant for disaster, a royally sitasteful family and a sexy, if unreliable, suitor

"Royal Blood" oozes with intrigue
By Novel Chatter
The last thing her Ladyship expected to see while peering into the dark, Transylvanian night was some "thing" or some "one" climbing up Bran Castle wall.

Such are the things that tend to happen to poor Lady Georgiana Rannoch. She's twenty-two, "depressedly" single, and thirty-fourth in line to the British throne. The King is her second cousin, and his wife, Her Majesty Queen Mary, loves to give Georgie little tasks. Most recently, she dispatched Georgie to keep tabs on the Prince of Wales' new American lady friend. Prior to that, Her Majesty put Georgie in charge of a visiting German princess with a fondness for shoplifting and American gangster slang.

This time Queen Mary appointed Lady Georgiana to represent the Royal family at the wedding of Georgie's old school mate, Princess Maria Theresa of Romania, to Prince Nicholas of Bulgaria. Adding to the atmosphere of the royal wedding is its location, the dark and dreary Castle Bran, Transylvania, purported home to vampires and werewolves. And then there's Prince Seigfried, whom Georgiana unceremoniously dumped earlier in the year, ensconced in the bedroom right next to hers.

In Royal Blood, the highly anticipated fourth book in author Rhys Bowen's "Royal Spyness" series, we find Lady Georgiana in the middle of another murder, and this time a mysterious vial is found in her room. Everyone is snowed in, the pass is closed, and there are no tracks leading from the castle. Just who is trying to frame Lady Georgiana and why?

Among the supporting cast of players in Royal Blood are many familiar faces in this series: Georgie's trusty bed-hopping best friend, Belinda Warburton-Stokes, Georgie's brother Binky, the current duke, and his tiresome, penny pinching wife Fig. As always, the mysterious and handsome Darcy O'Mara pops up at just the right moment! New additions to the mix are: Georgie's royal traveling companion Lady Middlesex, Queenie Hepplewhite her bumbling new maid, and a mysteriously dark butler named Dragomir.

Let me be honest, I love this series and was somewhat apprehensive about reviewing Royal Blood. Often times, at this point in a series, the plot and characters can become flat and repetitive. Not so in Rhys Bowen's latest! Quite the opposite, the characters remain fresh and interesting. The plot is crisp, and the turns are sharp and deadly. Ms. Bowen wisely gives the reader just enough information about the history of the players to allow a first time reader to feel right at home in Castle Bran. Rhys Bowen has written another brilliant, not-to-be-missed addition to this well loved series.

Georgie takes a trip to the gothic side
By Michelle Boytim
This is the 4th book in the Royal Spyness cozy mystery series. Georgie receives an unexpected surprise when her brother and his wife show up in London, and look to be staying for an extended period. When Georgie receives a royal invitation to lunch, she is again surprised by the queen’s request to send her to Transylvania as a royal representative for a wedding of a former schoolmate of Georgie. In desperate need of an inexpensive lady’s maid for the journey, she turns to her grandfather who, with his neighbor’s help comes up with a girl looking to improve her station. The inappropriately named Queenie is inexperienced and a bit of a disaster, but Georgie has no choice in the matter. She is chaperoned by the boisterous Lady Middlesex and her companion. Weather traps the group in the castle, and Georgie is dismayed to find her ill-fated fish-lipped Prince is also one of the guests and fears that she has been set up again. Several disturbing encounters have Georgie worrying about vampires, including a few bumps in the night. Luckily for her, Darcy also shows up at the castle as an invited guest of the groom. When a death occurs at the table and looks suspiciously of foul play, the group must work together to figure out who the murderer is before another person is killed. This was a delightful atmospheric turn for the series and I enjoyed the character development, particularly for the relationship between Darcy and Georgie. We will see where things go in the next installment.

sweet, funny, sad, exciting...all around a great story
By S.P.
I love the Lady Bug Farm series! It's so much fun to read about the characters' adventures and find out what will happen next! I bought a 1926 home to restore to its original splendor, so I can certainly relate to, and appreciate, the intrigue of uncovering history in a century old mansion as the characters in this story do. I laugh out loud as I read some of the funny parts in the book. It's cool that so many people from the city visit Lady Bug Farm and fall in love with the wholesome life in the country (but not all are cut out of the hard work that comes with it). It is captivating.

lighthearted amusing for fans of the series
By A Customer
Three years ago, the BFFs widows Cici Burke, Lindsay Wright, and Bridget Tyndale lived middle class suburban lifestyles, but each felt their lives unfilled with their kids moved out and their husbands gone; they purchased a run down Farm (see A Year on Ladybug Farm). Since their epic risk began, they feel At Home on Ladybug Farm, but also struggle to stay afloat with their financially draining renovation of the historic mansion although their small art studio, winery and jams and jellies store have had some success.

Friends suggest they open up the estate to major social galas. The trio has doubts but the sum of money they will receive from a society wedding overcomes their qualms especially when their first customers appear in need of a new location for a soon to be wedding. However, their guts prove right as they deal with lunatic combative mother-in-laws, bridezilla and goats as well as a romantic first for one of the widows.

Obviously for fans of the series, the latest adventures on the farm in the Shenandoah Valley is a lighthearted amusing tale as the three women continues to swing the bat regardless of what life tosses at them. Each of the ladies keeps their essence yet changes as they begin to recognize the truth that they are struggling farmers who no longer can be labeled suburban dwellers; unlike several years ago when they would have silently put up with the bull of guests even nasty undesirable ones.

READ THIS SERIES IN ORDER!!!!
By Deborah Wiley
Magic appears to be returning to the world and wreaking havoc while demons are striking out at the Lupi. Cynna Weaver fears her old teacher, Jiri, is behind the recent demon activity and will have to face her own fears about her past. Rule Turner is under attack on several fronts and the Lupi politics are about to get very hairy. Cullen Seabourne, Lily Yu, Rule, and Cynna will have to work together to face the darkness that threatens them all.

BLOOD LINES is the third book in Eileen Wilks' tales regarding the Lupi. Readers unfamiliar with the two previous novels, as well as the two short stories in anthologies, should read these tales before attempting BLOOD LINES. I had to refer back to the previous stories on more than one occasion while reading BLOOD LINES as the plot is very complex and ties together several loose ends from the prior stories. In particular, the events from MORTAL DANGER and the short story "Originally Human" play a huge role in this book. BLOOD LINES is not a stand alone novel and will leave you completely bewildered if you haven't read the rest of the series.

Eileen Wilks has crafted a world that is multilayered and requires readers to really pay attention to details. BLOOD LINES is not an easy read but it is a very satisfying one for fans of urban fantasy. The intricate details are cleverly interwoven into the fast paced plot that delves deeply into the fantastic supernatural world created by Ms. Wilks. Readers looking more for romance may be a bit disappointed as the romance between Cynna and Cullen is only just in the beginning stages and is not a focal point of the story, although it appears that their relationship will develop further in the next book.

BLOOD LINES is a very intense and compelling story. The sheer depth of the novel is commendable and leaves open so many exciting future possibilities for the characters. The world building is simply incredible as all the various threads are beginning to tie together to form a very intriguing picture. I will be waiting anxiously for the next installment!

Good story, characters; problems with pacing
By A. Reid
I am a fan of Eileen Wilks, who I think has great ideas and great command of the language. Her characters are interesting and engaging, too. Unfortunately, I had a huge problem with this book's pacing.

The first two novels in the series, Tempting Danger and Mortal Danger, moved along swimmingly. The short story that set the stage (in the anthology Craving, and very useful prereading for this book) riveted me. This one moved from cliffhanger to cliffhanger in a way that I think was meant to make it a page-turner, but which in my particular case only disengaged me from the action. Just when I was on the edge of my seat with one character or situation, we'd switch to another. I'd lose the urgency of the situation with character a, and by the time we'd get back to it, it would be just a mildly pleasant sense of closure rather than a nail-bitingly tense revelation. I know that this response is at variance with most of the reviews here (and fully expect to be spanked for it), but while I usually read Wilks' novels in a day, this one took me four...and I didn't tremendously enjoy the experience. I'm not giving up on her. I think she is one of the more promising authors in the paranormal adventure field. But I hope that she changes the pacing in her next book. I prefer a graceful arc to the sudden jerk of changing scenes.

A final word to first-time readers: don't be a first-time reader with this one. Wilks will not hold your hand as she weaves older characters and suplots into this story. If you haven't fulfilled the prerequisites, you are likely to be very confused.

Wilks has surprised me again. Interesting plot twists, expanded characters, the suspense continues
By C Lynn P
If you love the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, and the two "Magic" series books by Ilona Andrews, you will love this third book in the Wilks series about werewolf/magic/demon/dragon and otherworldly folks. A really suspenseful and fun summer read. I enjoyed every page. This is not erotica, but there are some scenes not suitable for the under 12 age group. I particularly enjoy the writers style, it's not "namby-pamby-kiss-me-once-and-I-fall-in-love-and-take-off-all-my-clothes" kind of romance that fries my bu** and insults my intelligence. There is real thoughtful development of the characters, their relationships and most importantly, the plots.
