Start at the Beginning

This was originally the first Scarpetta novel I read, actually heard as I listened to the unabridged tape version. I enjoyed it, I did not find the ending disappointing or a let down, although there were loose ends. It enticed me enough to read more of her books. I started with the first and read through, reading UE again. The whole thing was more enjoyable the second time when I had all the background and the loose ends did not bother me so much because I hope/assume they will be addressed in time. Scarpetta is getting a little "mean" but I think its good insight into human character and how what we do influences who we are. I recommend Cornwells books if you enjoy the process of a series with its long term character development.

Brightwell's unobtrusive 23rd Victorian historical mystery (after Mrs. Jeffries and the Best Laid Plans) adds a dash of holiday spirit to the adventures of Insp. Gerald Witherspoon and his housekeeper, Mrs. Jeffries. At the height of the Christmas season, Witherspoon is called in when Stephen Whitfield, a member of the upper class, is poisoned by foxglove slipped into his wine. Jeffries's below-stairs crew of irregulars track down those who were present when the fatal drink was poured, collecting rumors and gossip concerning the dead man and his family and friends. They soon find that Whitfield belonged to a tontine (an investment group where the last one alive collects the dead members' contributions) whose membership has been steadily dwindling. The writing lacks the wit of other Victorian series, such as Peter Lovesey's Sergeant Cribb novels, and the characters often border on cliché, but readers looking for a light diversion will be satisfied. With the number of books in this series so far, you'd think they would be boring. They aren't. It's great to be able to follow the characters through life. And, the mysteries are well written but light - no horrible acts as in so many modern mysteries. These are Victorian Era mysteries.

What a Feast!

It's Christmas time and Stephen Whitfield is having a small dinner party. Tensions are running a bit high at the dinner especially since the woman Stephen had hoped to marry, Eliza Graham, seems a bit too friendly with Hugh Langford, the guest she brought to the dinner party. Rosalind Murray, Stephen's sister-in-law, is none too happy about the attention Stephen is paying to Eliza. Maria and Basil Farringdon think Stephen is a bit of a snob and Maria gives Stephen a bottle of Bordeaux that is much more expensive than the port he gave them for Christmas. While all the guests seem to dislike Stephen, it's still a shock when someone poisons the Bordeaux and Stephen dies. Inspector Gerald Witherspoon is given the case to investigate since his record of solving murders is unblemished. What he doesn't realize is that his household staff, led by housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries, has been working behind the scenes to help him solve his cases. But this case is far more complex than anything else they've worked on and it begins to look like they may not be able to solve this one.

Emily Brightwell's Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries series gets better and better with each book and "Mrs. Jeffries and the Feast of St. Stephen" is the best of a wonderful group of books. The setting is Victorian England and Brightwell does a great job of capturing the time period and bringing little bits of trivia into the books (in this book Christmas trees are a novelty). The characters are all wonderfully written including Inspector Witherspoon, who is getting better at solving mysteries but still needs his household staff to help him even if he doesn't know it; Constable Barnes who knows what it going on and is happy to have help; Mrs. Jeffries; Mrs. Goodge, the cook; footman Wiggins, maid Betsy; coachman Smythe; eccentric American Luty; and her faithful butler and sparring partner Hatchet. Those who read Mrs. Jeffries and the Best Laid Plans will be eager to find out how Betsy and Smythe resolve the problems in their relationship after he "left her at the altar" and Brightwell doesn't disappoint in that plot line. I've read all 23 books in the series and am always amazed at how much I still learn about these characters in each book. In this book I learned some things about Mrs. Goodge and Hatchet that added more to their character. The mystery is extremely well written and plotted and just like the inspector and his staff, I was completely baffled as to who the killer was and was shocked when the identity was finally revealed. Many cozy mystery books have blurbs on the cover comparing the author to Agatha Christie, but Emily Brightwell lives up to that comparison - the solution to the murder was truly Christie-like.

One of the themes in the Mrs. Jeffries mysteries is how Witherspoon's staff has become like a family to each other and Witherspoon (there's a very touching and funny scene towards the end of the book that shows how much Witherspoon cares for them). At this point, Witherspoon and Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of the staff also feel like family to me - I love my visits into their world and can't wait to visit it again.

First published in London in 1852, Roget's Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases became popular in America with the 1920s crosswords craze and has sold almost 40 million copies worldwide. According to freelancer Kendall in this Professor and the Madman wannabe, Peter Mark Roget (1779–1869) compiled the thesaurus as a means of staving off the madness that pervaded his family—the classification of words was a coping mechanism for his anxiety. Burdened by his father's early death and a mentally unstable mother and grandmother, young Roget was shy and melancholy. The title tells all: rather than a discussion of etymology, The Man Who Made Lists examines Dr. Roget and his creation through a psychological lens. Critics couldn’t help but compare the effort to Simon Winchester’s acclaimed The Professor and the Madman (2001), about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary. Incidentally, in the Atlantic, Winchester criticized Roget’s Thesaurus for fostering “poor writing” in its indiscriminate cataloging. While even those reviewers who agreed with Winchester’s assessment acknowledged the value of Kendall’s subject matter, they diverged on its execution. A few thought the book well-written, a fine balance between historical research and novelistic flourishes. Others found forced dialogue and scenes, slack narrative, and factual errors. Still, The Man Who Made Lists is a fascinating look at a man, an era, and a now-iconic book.

Revealing, but somewhat disappointing

It could be argued that a generation from now the man whose name is synonymous with synonyms might very well be forgotten, thanks to computer-based websites that offer up what Peter Roget first published in 1852. Joshua Kendall offers a glimpse of a man who was a medical doctor by profession but made his lasting name through his "avocation"... a word not known in Roget's day. It is revealing but incomplete.

Peter Mark Roget was descended from a lineage that seemed to produce more than its fair share of depressed family members. His mother never quite recovered from her husband's early death, his sister, jilted as a young love, suffered bouts of lifelong melancholy and his famous uncle, so set off by grief from his wife's death that he took his own, all contributed to Roget's own depression. Given the fact that Roget lived to be ninety is no small order, but "order" is the very word by which he lived. Shutting out the very emotions that might have given color to his life, Roget turned to listmaking. It is here we are forever grateful to him.

Kendall's biography is rather dry and often flat but he does introduce a humorous chapter (and a profoundly historical one given the Napoleonic times) whereby a young Roget is hired to take the two teenage sons of a wealthy Englishman to Europe for a year or more and give them an education through travel. That the highly unemotional and humorless Dr. Roget could help the boys absorb anything about Paris "through the senses" would have been suspect, and consequently, as the author points out, the sons wrote back to their parents regarding the numbers of statues and pictures that were contained in The Louvre and the number of tower steps and organ pipes at Notre Dame... hardly worth a trip to the City of Light.

What is missing in Kendall's book is any lengthy discourse as to how Roget finally put his thesaurus together, something so sorely lacking that it begs a question as to why it was not included. Everything seems to be in place as to why Roget wrote his thesaurus and had it published, but the process of compilation...that which might have made Roget spring to life... never appears. It's a serious enough omission not to recommend the book itself, but Kendall's look at the personal side of Peter Roget has just enough attraction to warrant a read. Given Roget's historical popularity and standing, I only wish there had been more.

Fascinating biography about Dr. Peter Mark Roget, the master listmaker

Having finished the book I will share my impressions, but first a few words about some of the criticisms in reviews here at Amazon. For those who said it was poorly written without examples, these comments read as hollow. The well researched book deserves better than this. For those disappointed that this book did not focus more attention on how the Thesaurus was accumulated, I think you miss the point. It was almost a life long obsession that eventually made itself manifest once he was well past his middle age. Kendall's book is a biography, which covers a life time and he does so with great depth. For those bored, well then biographies perhaps are not your cup of tea?

My impression is that Kendall did thorough and substantial research and that he knew not only his subject but the times in which he lived. While Roget, of Swiss background, lived a very unusually long life, it was always full of activity and conflict, hefty challenges that involved those closest to him (his direct and extended family)and endless quests for knowledge. A good portion of his obsession for creating lists was to bring order to his often tumultuous life. While some people develope mental or emotional odd or deviant behavior as a result of badly coping with great stress, Roget found that focussing his powerful intellect towards expositions in science and synonyms, allowed him to vent and direct his anxieties towards non-destructive paths, all of which brought him great respect and fame.

What is really quite extraordinary was the depth of emotional hardship that he had to deal with from a young age. We can also clearly see that on some level (hard to really give it a name) that his family had a large cloud of darkness always close at hand. Madness, suicide, depression were hallmarks that this family was imbued with. Consider though what he overcame. When in France with two young youths under his tutelage and care, war breaks out with the French and Napoleon looks to arrest every single British citizen in France and in lands that the French troops were controlling, which included the Swiss cantons. That story alone is worth reading the book for. Consider that wretchedly weak, clinging, cringing, smothering and needy mother he had, who once having lost her husband turned to obtain life giving reasons to live from her young son. Like a flowering plant looking towards the sun, she obsessively and ruinously used her own child as a vicarious prop to keep herself alive. Living at a time when children had trouble saying no to their parents, keeping decorum and family dirty laundry well hidden, he found his mother to be almost impossible until the day she finally passed on, first having sunk into complete madness. Consider that becoming a Doctor in those days was not the well organized and comprehensive process of our universities today; in those days one had to pursue lecturers and accumulate enough knowledge without the hands on experience of interning in a hospital. Nonetheless, his drive to complete his education was as thorough as most of his intellectual pursuits. Roget loved knowledge and sought out the best and brighest minds at various universities, some up in Scotland.

Roget was something of a small scale polymath. His improvements to the slide rule were widely useful in an era before modern calculating machines. His insights into how the retina and sight operated, according to the author, helped a future generation create the motion picture machines. He wrote an enormous and pre-Darwinian scholarly tome that was very influential in shaping Darwin's own world famous treatise.

Of course Roget is known these days by millions of people for his Thesaurus, his masterpiece. His objective was to help expand the vocabulary of all people so as to fascillitate a clearer exposition of ones own thoughts. This lofty objective has done just that.

I found this book endlessly fascinating, though the life he and his family lived was shot through with so much tragedy and despair. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about his full and successful life. Well recommended.

Her story tumbles out in words that are colloquial and sometimes misspelled as she pens letters to her family and friends throughout her long life. Although her attendance at school is sparse, the teachers encourage her, believing that she is exceptionally gifted in language. As a teenager, she thinks that she does not want to have children "as they will brake your hart." But have them she does, a process which makes her "bones screech," but she comes to see that "children swell up your heart." She learns the difference between lust, "a fiery hand in the vitals" (as in Jane Eyre, a book to which she often refers), and love, which she finds with her husband Oakley. Readers will savor many passages of this novel. On the electrification of Bethel Mountain ("a lovely lady's necklace laid out"), or the invention of birth control pills ("the greatest thing since drip dry"), and many other matters, Ivy writes with a verve and immediacy which prove that her creator, Lee Smith, is a storyteller supreme.

Extremely Moving!

I picked up this title while reading another review on the book "Gap Creek" By Robert Morgan. Which I also enjoyed. Once I read the reviews on this book I couldn't wait to read it. When I began reading Ivy Rowe's letters I could not stop and when I did stop I was still thinking of the things she had written all through the day. I grew so close to her. I laughed and I cried. Her voice & hands will wrap around your heart and stay with you long after you read the last page. This is truly my best read of the year 2000. I borrowed this particular book to read but I plan to buy a personal copy for many more years of pleasure. Thank you Lee Smith for enlightening my life through Ivy Rowe.

Lee Smith's best book

I'll read anything by Lee Smith, but this is her best. It's a saga, the chronicaling of a child's (as she grows to old age and death) Appalachian life in a cabin 'up a holler.'
Rich with loving detail, philosophy, and the indications of the passing of time not only for the protagonist but also for her community and the country itself, it'll make you laugh and cry and sigh.
Read it, if you haven't already!

Absolutely brilliant. Best book I've read in a long time.

Fair and Tender Ladies tells the lifelong story of Ivy Rowe, a woman growing up and growing old in Appalachian Virginia. The story is told totally through a long series of letters she writs to family, friends, lovers and acquaintances.

Ivy's life is one of abject poverty and hardship. Most of her siblings dies young. Her father is disabled through the majority of the book, Her mother is a tormented and exploited soul. Ivy has several chances to escape all this but the pull of place and family keeps her firmly entrenched where she is.

This out to be a thoroughly depressing book--instead it is a truly inspiring book. For, though objectively a person with virtually nothing, Ivy sees herself as uniquely blessed. The life force that carries her into old age is one that sees the glass perpetually as half full--her hardships are, to her eyes, less threatening and frightening than those she sees around her. She is essentially saved several times by people she dos not know or whom she has previously rejected. Though she is often exploited she does not allow those experiences to harden her heart.

This is not to say Ivy is soft or naive. She merely sees hard times as the burden of life and chooses to write her letters to make sense of it all where she can and merely record it if she can't.

I would have thought the letter format would wear after a while. It did not. It in fact created a sense of intimacy that enhanced the reading experience.

All in all, this is one of the best books I read in years. I was thoroughly enchanted throughout. I can only rejoice in the large body of work that lee Smith has for me to work through. If her other efforts are even a fraction as good as this book, I have a lot of great reading ahead of me.

A Valid Reason for Betrayal?

I think Nora Roberts has a fantasy with horses and horse farms, as we've seen in her books Irish Thoroughbred, Irish Rebel and now True Betrayals which was written in 1996. Unlike the other two, True Betrayals is not pure romantic fiction but a blend of several genres. To me, it was very interesting and kept me amused and entertained for several hours.

Kelsey Byden was led to believe that her mother, Naomi Chadwick, had been dead for quite a few years and when she received a letter from her mother asking if she'd come visit her, she was an emotional wreck. It seems the real reason her mother wasn't a part of her life as she grew up was the fact that she had been in prison for killing her lover. Talk about shock value! Kelsey decides to visit her mother to try to come to terms with her emotions - Kelsey had recently divorced and just finding out her dead mother was very much alive was enough to make anyone emotionally unstable and made Kelsey question everything in her life.

Naomi has a working horse farm in Virginia and Kelsey goes to try to make sense out of her life. Sounds like a typical plot line, right? Well, sort of, but if Nora Roberts is writing it, you can bet there are a few twists and turns along the way. Like Kelsey being thrown into a situation that could result in another murder.

Can the trainer who works for her mother be the answer to Kelsey's broken heart? Can Kelsey ever trust her mother again after being deceived by her for so many years? Will Kelsey ever believe in herself again? I won't give away any of the plot, you'll have to read and enjoy this one for yourself!

I do have to say that the plot is not the part of the book that I enjoyed the most - sure there's a little mystery thrown in just to keep things interesting. Sure there is lots of romance and sorting of feelings toward the mother-daughter relationship. But what I enjoyed the most were the descriptions of the horse ranch, the surrounding areas, actual workings of the ranch, etc. Nora Roberts is first rate at painting a very vivid mental image and I found myself slipping off to Virginia and owning a ranch of my own in my imagination while reading this book. The lush green landscape, the openness of the working ranch, the racetrack - ah, it sounded like pure heaven.

The plot is very predictable: everyone lives happily-ever-after, mother and daughter are reunited, true love waits for Kelsey, etc., etc. What makes the story enjoyable is the mix that Roberts has perfected - not just pure romance, but a little mystery and intrigue also.

Like reading a cloud

Marketing this novel as a thriller (or even a romantic comedy combined with a thriller) is seriously misleading. The Chase is too cute for its own good -- certainly too cute for readers who are looking for a plausible story. The Chase is so over-the-top that I was unable to buy into the plot or the characters. The cheesy banter between Kate and Nicolas, meant to be witty and suggestively sexual, seems designed to appeal to preteens. The Chase is intended as light reading, but it's so fluffy and insubstantial I felt like I was reading a cloud.

Special Agent Kate O'Hare is chasing the dreamy Nicolas Fox and not just because she would like to cuddle up against his lean and firm body. Fox seems to have robbed a bank but, as O'Hare knows, he has stolen from a safe deposit box at the FBI's direction to obtain evidence because the FBI is apparently unwilling or unable to get a warrant to search for it. The crime (the details of which are left unexplained) is ridiculous and O'Hare should go to prison for having any part in it. How she manages to reconcile her profound sense of law-and-order with her willingness to subvert the Constitution while being a party to a bank robbery is something Evanovich doesn't explain. I have difficulty cheering for a hypocrite who fails to recognize her own hypocrisy, and O'Hare's self-righteous justification for breaking the law (repeatedly) doesn't endear me to her.

Now the FBI needs O'Hare to commit a crime that's even more ridiculous: stealing a bronze rooster from the highly placed man who bought it from the thief who stole it from the Smithsonian. The man is so highly placed (think Karl Rove) that the FBI doesn't want to "embarrass" the country by arresting him. Eventually yet another theft needs to be orchestrated and the novel turns into a low-budget version of Ocean's Eleven. Unfortunately, the method used to commit the crime is far from innovative and not even remotely credible.

Evanovich works so hard to make O'Hare "tough but feminine" and Fox "devious but charming" that both characters seem inauthentic. They fit nicely into their stereotyped boxes but they lack believable personalities. O'Hare's "I just got stabbed and killed my assailant -- let's have champagne!" attitude wears thin quickly. The chemistry between the smitten FBI agent and the rakish conman with "lightly tousled" hair is utterly predictable and, for that reason, uninteresting. The villain is about as deep as Snidely Whiplash.

The parts of the novel that are meant to be funny failed to amuse me, but I often chuckled at parts that were not intended to provoke laughter (O'Hare's superdad carries hand grenades in his golf bag and the Karl Rove character, no longer in government, can instantly launch a predator drone armed with Hellfire missiles within the United States by making a phone call). Much of the novel is just too easy for O'Hare and Fox ("oh, don't worry, the secret door won't be guarded") and too many things that shouldn't be easy (like stealing from safe deposit boxes) are glossed over without explanation. Part of the novel takes place in China but it might as well be Kansas City. The local color sounds like it was cribbed from a tourism website. Evanovich does better when she describes the high-end outlet mall in Camarillo, California, a place she has apparently been. The ending is even more preposterous than the story that precedes it. The story moves quickly and parts of it are fun, but there are not enough of those parts to recommend the novel as a whole.

Snakes On A Train

I've always been a fan of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt and NUMA Files adventures, and THE CHASE is the same kind of story. There's a larger-than-life hero who faces impossible challenges and is viciously injured but gets right up. There are fast cars, a discreet liaison with a beautiful woman, loyal associates, and big transportation (in this case trains rather than boats). Oh, and a sociopathic villain.

All that's to the good. Of course we also have writing from the Hardy Boys school of literature and fantastic plot elements. That's no surprise and if you're a fan, you just read around it. Here's an example of an overloaded sentence from the beginning of Chapter 15:

"Cromwell's chauffeur drove the 1906 Rolls-Royce Brougham, made by the London coach maker Barker, with its six-cylinder, thirty-horsepower engine, from the garage to the front of the palatial Nob Hill mansion Cromwell had designed himself and constructed from white marble blocks cut and hauled by railroad from a quarry in Colorado."

Hmmm ... anyone got a red pencil?

The hero is one Isaac Bell, an independently wealthy private detective. The villain is a bank robber-murderer known as "the Butcher Bandit." Bell, through hot detective work and breathtaking good luck, gets on the trail of the Bandit by page 168 (of 404). The rest of the book -- the better half -- involves a lot of fast driving, a locomotive race, some shooting and robbing, and the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Oh, and of course a satisfactory ending.

THE CHASE does have a structural device that kicks it up a notch. While the story takes place in 1906, the book opens and closes with a 1950 underwater salvage operation in a large Montana lake. This is reminiscent of James Cameron's 1997 movie TITANIC, and was a very nice touch.

Cussler's at his best with the action scenes, and THE CHASE has some epic action. The train scenes really are playing to his strength. The story is according to formula but the formula works: familiar and therefore safe style, combined with wild action. This is a very satisfactory offering from Cussler and if you like this kind of book, you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.

I was left constantly wanting more

I find myself unsure of how to rate/review this one. I like the entire premise of this new series, but it’s missing something. I mean, this really could be a great television show. Its ultra fast paced and the characters are snarky funny. I did suffer a bit from geographic schizophrenia though. They travel so much in this one book they earned platinum card status. There was just so much crammed in.

Kate and Nic make a great team and them working together is pure gold. But it really is lacking emotionally. I didn’t feel connected to them. I was left constantly wanting more. More emotion. More intimacy. More sizzle. Just more.

I told a friend, it read like a good script but didn’t have the depth I want from a book. I then learned later that Evanovichs’ co writer also writes for television. Yep, that explains it now.

I dunno guys I am rating it 3.5 because I did find it funny and entertaining. Overall though it was a bit meh :(

Looking for a book that is hilarious, outrageous and guaranteed to perk up your day? If you aren't familiar with Sandra Hill's exuberant humor then you are in for a treat. She writes light hearted books that really transport the reader into a world you wished you could inhabit. Her characters are a hoot and the heroes in particular are so hunky! In Dark Viking, she continues her Navy SEALs, time travel Viking series.

In this novel saucy stuntwoman Rita Sawyer is recruited into the new WEALs (Woman on Earth, Air, Land, and Sea). While in the grueling training camp Rita in scuba gear she is suddenly transported in time. When she wakes up she finds herself caged in a place that looks like an old Viking village. The head honcho named Steven dubs her the ugly Sea Siren. He states she is dangerous and keeps insisting they are Vikings. Rita is sure someone is playing a joke on her but she isn't one to be pushed around.

Steven of Norstead is depressed. As the last of his noble Viking line he has great responsibility for 2 Viking estates. He used to be happy and carefree but when his brother Thorfinn disappeared life lost its appeal. When out on his longboat Steven discovers a strange female monster and immediately cages this treacherous creature. But when this 'Ree-tah' takes off her outerwear he is dazzled by her beauty. However, he still does not trust her and her eccentric ways. But when she mentions a man that she met similar to him named Thorfinn Steven is determined to discover what she knows and find Thorfinn again.

This novel bursts with joy. The characters are bold, bright and just laugh out loud funny. I loved the indomitable and spunky Rita. She has a lot of grit and doesn't let a brawny and sexy Viking push her around. The jokes in the story are just so original and corny that you have to love them. The hero Steven had some surprising depth as he really feels the burden of responsibility since his brother was lost and misses his brother dearly. I loved Steven's befuddlement with his `Ree-tah' and how he sets seducing her with his confident charm. The only quibble I have with the story is the rather abrupt ending and how stubborn Steven is at confessing he cares for Rita. But for sheer joy and laughter this book hits right at the funny bone and will lift your spirits.

The author's special brand of humor, wit and sensuality make her books something to look forward to after a long day. Dark Viking is no exception. I loved it!

5 Hearts from TRS!

I was hooked from the first page when Rita's athleticism was showcased and couldn't put down the book. Her self-confidence carried her through trying times as she tried to adapt to Steven's culture. Steven had been depressed over the loss of his brother, Thorfinn (Viking Unchained). When his people found Ree-tah, dressed in a wetsuit and passed out on their shore, Steven felt a spark of something even though he wasn't sure what kind of sea monster she might be. I loved their conversations as they tried to figure out what brought Rita to the past and how she would be protected from the King. The secondary characters added to the plot and were interesting characters all by themselves. The sideline story about Steven's sister shows promise for a future book. For all the humor in the book I thought the ending was very sweet and emotional. Dark Viking has it all - great characters, funny dialogue, engaging plot, and heartwarming romance. - Lisa Freeman

Couldn't get past one issue... *spoiler in review*

I laughed throughout the whole thing except one part.....the whole dog collar leash scene! Ugh! the heroine herself was disgusted and was depressed that he was treating her like a dog. I get the whole male dominant but usually these heroines are pretty strong characters who can handle these guys. The fact that no apology/amends/discussion was ever brought up. The heroine completely forgot about it, as if it never happened. Yet we read for quite a few pages how she hates it and it's humiliating for her. Really made me upset and was all i could think about for the rest of the story. Even as they get their HEA, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Christmas is a time of joy, and what better way to celebrate it than an anthology featuring four top notch authors....

"Melting Frosty" by Maggie Shayne shows what happens when opposites collide. Matthew has hated Christmas ever since his father died, while Holly has embraced the holiday season more than ever since losing her whole family just before Christmas. Can these two apparently mismatched souls ever find love together? A certain black hat seems to think so....

What a tear jerker! Maggie Shayne has always been one of my favorite authors and "Melting Frosty" showcases just why her books remain on my keeper shelves. Holly is the ideal woman to melt Matthew's cold heart and I couldn't help but cheer her on every step of the way. The inclusion of the black fedora hat is ideal and adds a touch of mystique to this aptly named tale. "Melting Frosty" shows that every action in the universe has a meaning if only one looks for it, just as Holly does.

In "Charlotte's Web", Erin McCarthy introduces readers to a witch in denial about her powers. Charlotte Murphy comes from a family of witches but she wants to celebrate Christmas the traditional way. She has loved her friend Will Thornton for years, but does he reciprocate her feelings?

Erin McCarthy always writes a charming tale and "Charlotte's Web" is no exception. Fans of her Vegas Vampires series will note that "Charlotte's Web" is a bit spicier, focusing more on the sensuality than the humor. Bree, Charlotte's sister, is an interesting secondary character and actually intrigued me far more than Charlotte did. Perhaps Bree will get her own tale?

"Beat of Temptation" by Nalini Singh is part of her Psy-Changeling series. Tamsyn Mahaire is the Healer of the DarkRiver pack, an unusually high position for one so young. The mating bond between Tamsyn and Nate Ryder snapped into place when Tamsyn was only fifteen years old. Now, at age nineteen, Tamsyn is ready to claim Nate for her own... or lose him forever.

However, unexpected visitors have arrived and miracles will be in store this Christmas.

What an enchanting tale! Jean Johnson has crafted a very clever tale that touches on the holiday spirit for all religions. The universal theme of helping another in need is shown clearly throughout this heartwarming story. The love between Rachel and Steve runs deep, and their sudden fortunes are sure to bring a smile to even the most miserly.

AN ENCHANTED SEASON is the perfect blend of stories to warm up those cold winter nights. Maggie Shayne, Erin McCarthy, Nalini Singh, and Jean Johnson provide readers with their own unique brand of stories in this superb anthology.

An Enchanted Season is a romantic collection of holiday paranormals with sugar and just a bit of spice.

"Melting Frosty" by Maggie Shayne. (5 stars)This was my favorite story of the four, it fit the magical romance theme perfectly. Fate and possibly loved ones from the great beyond conspire to bring Matt and Holly together for Christmas. At first glance Matt and Holly seem to have little in common - Matt is a cynic who avoids attachments and Holly approaches life with joy and faith. But they not only feel an instant connection with each other but discover that they have both survived tragic losses as children. I couldn't help but root for Holly and Matt to both find what they were missing in life and couldn't wait to see if Holly's zest for life and a little Christmas spirit could bring love back into Matt's life

"Charlotte's Web" by Erin McCarthy,(4 stars) set in the same town as her Heiress For Hire and A Date with the Other Side (Berkley Sensation). Charlotte and Will have had a close platonic relationship for years. Both are secretly in love with the other, but afraid to take a chance at expressing their deeper feelings for fear of ruining their friendship. But when Charlotte discovers that her family wasn't kidding about witchy powers being hereditary, Charlotte knows just the spell to cast. - This is one of my favorite themes, best friends longing for more and McCarthy really had the two more-than-friends sizzling as Charlotte and Will take the chance at moving their relationship to a new level.

"Beat of Temptation" by Nalini Singh. (5 stars) I love Singh's Psy-Changeling series. This story is a prequel to Slave to Sensation (The Psy-Changelings, Book 1)and a more than respectable addition to the series, very well fleshed out even in this short format. Changelings Sentinel Nate and Healer Tamsyn are mates and are reoccurring characters in the series. Nate has yet to claim Tami, he's much older and wants to give her time to grow up. But after fours years Tami is all woman, fully ready to make the leap and she begins to think that while his leopard knows she's his mate, the man doesn't want her. But Nate doesn't realize how much his lack of commitment is torturing Tami, and if he's not careful he may just lose her forever.

"Gift of the Magi" by Jean Johnson. (3 stars) Not as romantic as the other stories, since Steve and Rachel are already in love. But Steve and his fiancé Rachel have let their troubles get in the way of their relationship as they are are in danger of going under financially and losing the bed and breakfast that has been in Steve's family for generations. But when three strangers come to stay Christmas Eve at the pair's Inn, Steve and Rachel find that even if they need a little help, they already have the greatest gift, each other. If you trimmed the love scenes to get a PG-13, this story would be right at home in Reader's Digest, it has that uplifting angels-among-us quality to it.

I would have bought this book for Singh's story alone, I am a huge fan of the Psy-Changeling series, so the stories by Shayne and McCarthy were just added bonuses. This was a nice light romantic read, perfect if you are in the mood for some mistletoe magic.

Berkley brings four gifted authors together in An Enchanted Season for a magical book filled with some delightful tales of romance and inspiration.

~Melting Frosty by Maggie Shayne~

Matt and Holly both suffered tragic loss during the Christmas holidays when they were children, but each reacted completely differently to the pain. While Holly looks for the joy and love in all things, Matt expects only emptiness and sorrow. Brought together by a series of miracles, stranded together by a snowstorm, this pair will have an everlasting effect on each other...

If ever a story were written that made one believe in miracles - especially the miracle of love - it would be Maggie Shayne's Melting Frosty. She had my eyes watering by page three of her story and the waterworks never really stopped after that. I don't truly know which touched me more - Matt's despair or Holly's hope. Both were palpable in their intensity and made for an unforgettable and heart-warming read.

~Charlotte's Web by Erin McCarthy~

Friends. That's what Will and Charlotte have always been, much to her dismay. Oh, it isn't that she doesn't want his friendship, it's just that she has longed for much more than that for years. But Will doesn't seem to see her as anything more than a buddy. It's time for Charlotte to tap into the magic of the holiday season and her family's own witchy heritage to try and catch Will's attention in a big, romantic way...

I am always a sucker for romances with friends who have loved each other from afar for too long. In Charlotte's Web, Erin McCarthy does the theme right with the love affair between Will and Charlotte. Pair Charlotte's barely hidden desire with long-stifled magical abilities that have a delicious way of granting her fondest wishes where Will is concerned and you have a sexy, fun tale that you will be more than happy to snuggle up with on a cold winter's night...

Admirable enough, but that very space and freedom turned torturous for the frustrated Tammy, until four years later when she is so ready to explode she'll do anything to break Nate's hated self-control...

With the first book in the Psy/Changeling series, Nalini Singh garnered another fan with this reviewer. With each subsequent story in this riveting series, she proves she is no one-hit wonder, delivering intense stories filled with passion, intrigue, and best of all, love.

Beat of Temptation follows very admirably in that vein. While it is technically the fourth story in the series, the fact that it is a prequel makes it easy to read out of series order, granting newcomers the chance to sample this talented author's work without first needing to read the other books in the series. Of course, I fully expect anyone who reads Beast of Temptation will rush right out to purchase all of the other books in this series.

The first in this saga to mate two Changelings together rather than a Changeling with a Psy, this tale was no less fascinating for it. In fact, watching Tammy and Nate's denied lust for each other escalate into uncontrollable passion made for some extremely powerful scenes that defy the reader to put the book down until the story's end.

Throughout it all, we still enjoy glimpses of the Psy world as they plot against the Changeling packs for their own financial gain.

Fans of the Psy/Changeling series will adore this glimpse into Nate and Tammy's past, and new fans will find it an excellent entry point to this mesmerizing world.

Steve and Rachel are just one mortgage payment away from losing their cherished bed and breakfast inn. The biggest blizzard to hit town in years seems to dash all of their hopes and dreams as reservations go unfulfilled from guests unable to make it to the inn. But the blizzard brings some very unusual miracles, too...

Jean Johnson is a new author for me. I found her story, Gifts of the Magi to be just as spellbinding and emotional as the other stories in An Enchanted Season! Truly, Ms. Johnson easily holds her own in this roster of very talented authors and is a writer I will be looking for more from in the future.

In her story, she brings us the gift of miracles large and small - some magical and some simply born of the human spirit. These miracles will stay in my heart for a long time to come and I daresay will have me considering people in real life a little differently from now on.
