Lately, the ongoing drama in White's justly celebrated Doc Ford series, set on Florida's Sanibel Island, has come from marine biologist Ford's deal with the devil: he will continue to work as a covert government operative, assassinating bad guys around the globe, if his bosses keep their hands off his ex-hippie pal, Tomlinson, whose long-ago involvement in a '60s bombing has targeted him for retribution. This time, though, that plotline takes a rest, as Ford deals with more immediate threats: the aftereffects of a category 4 hurricane that swept across the island, leaving in its wake a lot of angry marina dwellers ("shit on by God, by nature, by government, by insurance agencies"). Among those aftereffects is the discovery of a ship long buried at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, the victim of a similar hurricane in 1944. Ford is asked to restore various artifacts found on the vessel, and when one of them turns out to be a Nazi medal, a new mystery is afoot, involving an alluring older woman living in a nearby gabled mansion. White attempts to juggle a lot of storylines in this one--the Nazi angle; the 1944 hurricane; the mysterious woman; a psycho marina owner out to claim the artifacts for his own--and while he occasionally seems on the verge of losing control, he keeps all the balls in the air through the finale. Randy Wayne White is DaMan for Florida history/mystery stories

I first discovered White on a trip to Sanibel a dozen years ago while vacationing with my sons and families. At Jerry's, where one must shop for groceries (or Bailey's), I found my first White book, either Sanibel Flats or Captiva. As a tourist, I saw the usual things, but I was captivated by the islands and wanted to know about things outside the "beaten path."

White uses his considerable knowledge of southwest FL along with his lyrical and informative prose, to say nothing of his intricate plots and well-developed characters. I've read all of his books as fast as I could--he draws the reader into the background of the REAL islands, and I learned much I wouldn't have by just going to Bubble Room because grandkids when small, celebrated birthdays there.

I cannot praise White's historical/mystery novels nor his laudable writing ability enough. His words flow, be it description, conversation, or interesting and well-developed characters. I'd love to meet Doc Ford or Tomlinson, especially. I know they are probably composites, but I'll bet Randy Wayne White knows people similar to them if not them.

Dark Light is no exception; it is one of his best, with an intricate, sometimes mystical bent. I've met a few similar to Chestra, and I particularly like that her mystery is left hanging to some extent. Maybe she'll appear in another book. The international connection to WWII is also evocative to me since my father died in the Battle of the Bulge when I was barely four. That topic and the boat and its artifacts and the subterfuge among the characters held my interest through a night. I really didn't know there were German U-boats off the coast of FL during WWII.

Glad this one is set in Sanibel

I am very glad to see that Doc is back to being a biologist on Sanibel and loved that this story was set on Sanibel. Not really loving when Doc and Tomlinson go overseas and do the Navy Seal thing. This is much more believable. Chestra was a fascinating character.

Some books aren't natural fits for audio. Edgar-winner Ellis's new novel, for example, has a complex plot that hops back and forth between the arrest, conviction and execution of serial killer Terry Burgos in 1989 and 16 years later when Burgos's prosecutor, Paul Riley, is drawn into the investigation of a very similar series of murders, involving many of the same characters. Complicating things even more, the contemporary sections jump from Riley's point of view to that of the demented new killer. Ellis uses chapter breaks, posted dates, italics and a shift from present tense narration to past tense for 1989, efforts that clarify matters in print but are a bit subtle for audio. Even an accomplished and inventive narrator like Dick Hill can only do so much—a pause before announcing a time shift, the use of a distinctive accent for the killer—to keep listener confusion to a minimum. But there's not much any reader could do with a key ingredient of the novel—the nonsense messages left at the crime scenes that contain a coded text that is near-impossible to distinguish by ear. Hill handles the dramatic sequences and thriller elements effortlessly and if one is willing to overlook several perplexing time-warped moments and the impossibility of deciphering the clues before Riley explains them, this audio provides a fair amount of entertainment.

Falters badly at the end

It is a shame when lawyers, especially lawyers with great reputations, write legal thrillers that are wrong on the law, or, at the very least, stretch verity so the brooks are much too broad for leaping (to paraphrase Housman). Sadly, although it is a good read and a page-turner, the ending of Eye of the Beholder is both contrived and maudlin.

I will not map the broad brooks, chasms really, because that would give away part of the plot. I can, however, quote the protagonist's musing about the insanity defense, which he gets wrong (clearly ignorant or oblivious to its history): He says that a person whom he prosecuted for murder "didn't fit the definition of insanity, as that definition was written by a bunch of politicians who didn't want to appear soft on crime."

Actually, the definition to which he refers was formulated by academics and those who wanted to give courts greater leeway to excuse persons committing serious crimes than the rule it replaced. The academics who drafted the insanity defense Ellis bemoans were hardly hard on crime--au contraire, they were in the forefront to devise many ways criminals could escape responsibility for their crimes. And their insanity-defense rule did precisely that.

I give Eye of the Beholder only two stars because although it held my interest until it veered at the end, it could and should have been much much better, and much more concurrent with reality. Other lawyer/writers are able to carry it off (William Lashner's superb Victor Carl series is a sterling example). Too bad David Ellis cannot.

In "Eye of the Beholder," by David Ellis, a sadistic assailant murders and mutilates six young women (two students along with four runaways and prostitutes), each in a different manner. One of the victims is heiress Cassie Bentley, the spoiled daughter of influential and wealthy parents. Detective Joel Lighter is the investigator and the prosecutor is First Assistant County Attorney Paul Riley, who quickly realizes that this investigation could launch his career. Much to Riley's relief, the matter is quickly resolved when a part-time handyman, Terry Burgos, who had been stalking one of the victims, is arrested and confesses to the crime. Riley successfully argues for the death penalty and Burgos is executed eight years later.

Another eight years pass, and the Burgos trial is a distant memory. A reporter named Carolyn Pendry airs a documentary in which she argues that Burgos did not belong on Death Row in the first place; he was clearly psychotic and should have been treated in a facility for the criminally insane. A mysterious man watches Pendry's program, someone with a secret agenda and murderous impulses of his own. This individual embarks on a new killing spree that raises a disturbing question: Was the right person put to death?

Fifty-one year old Paul Riley has changed over the years. He now belongs to a large law firm and commands impressive fees for defending white collar criminals. His chief client is Harland Bentley, father of Cassie, one of the six women that Burgos allegedly killed. Riley is in love with the governor's daughter, Shelly Trotter, but she is reluctant to commit to a long-term relationship. Soon Paul starts receiving a series of cryptic notes that appear to have a connection to the Burgos murders. Even more horrifying, additional killings convince both the police and Riley that someone else may have had a hand in the crimes for which Terry took sole responsibility. Detectives Michael McDermott and Ricki Stoletti look into the latest crimes, and they reluctantly work with Riley (whom they don't trust), trying to locate a shadowy figure who kills silently and disappears without a trace.

David Ellis goes back and forth in time between 1989 and 2005. In addition, he frequently changes point of view between the first and third person. As the story drags on for almost four hundred pages, the plot becomes increasingly turgid and confusing. The resolution is so convoluted that it takes many pages of exposition to explain who did what to whom and why. Although "Eye of the Beholder" has its fair share of thrills and moments of suspense and sheer terror, Ellis tries to do too much. He populates his book with a host of underdeveloped characters, creates at least a half-dozen red herrings that go nowhere, and then scrambles to tie up all of his loose threads. What should have been an electrifying thriller is instead an irritating and jarring tale of a monumentally dysfunctional family, a homicidal maniac, and a lawyer caught up in a gothic drama that he doesn't begin to understand.

excellent police procedural

In the summer of 1989, six women were found in the basement near the maintenance lockers of Mansbury College. All the women were tortured and each died in a different manner ranging from strangulation to near decapitation. One of the victims, college student Ellie Danzinger had gotten a restraining order out against Terry Burgos, a part time handyman at the college. Whey they went to his home, they found enough evidence to convict him for five of the killings. The case of the sixth girl he killed Cassie Bentley, daughter to a mega-mogul billionaire was never tried to her father's influence. In 1996, Terry is killed but his last words, cryptic though they might be, were to the prosecutor Paul Riley: "I am not the only one".

In the present, a series of murders are linked to the killings in 1989. Paul Riley, now the head of mega powerful law firm, receives strange notes from the killer, has his finger prints on one of the victims and is forced into part of the new case with it evidence similar to the case that solidified his reputation. Looked upon from a fresh perspective with new information, Riley finds that the 1989 case didn't reveal all its secrets and someone wants them to stay buried.

This is one of the most energizing and emotionally satisfying police procedurals of the year. David Ellis makes his characters come alive so that readers will either root for or detest them; no one will remain detached. There is plenty of action and the changing from the eighties to the nineties to the present is smooth so that the readers are never jarred out of the storyline. The protagonist as he ages from a man who sees life as black and white to a person who realize there are subtle greys has to make some decisions as he confronts his greatest success with the realization it is also his greatest failure.

Nicodemus Dunne was a London policeman. great historical mystery

In 1828 in New South Wales, a soldier relieving himself of the drink he imbibed at the pub is murdered. Soon afterward, Governor Lieutenant-General Ralph Darling receives an ominous short rhyme with the implication more will die. Darling, based on advice from the police chief Captain Francis Rossi, orders former Bow St. Runner Nicodemus Dunne to investigate. Nic points out he is a patterer reading the news to people and no longer a detective ever since he was exiled for protecting a little girl from the excess assault of soldiers

Nic uncovers all sorts of secrets from local residents, but none connect to the killer who has murdered again. However, his efforts to identify the culprit lead to the predator identifying him as a threat. With little help from the military who believe he acted wrongly saving the child, Nic knows he goes it alone. Of course his efforts lead him to meet Reverend Halloran and his delightful protégé seamstress Rachel Dormin who he likes but fears his attraction could harm her.

Death and the Running Patterer is a great historical mystery, in which armchair travelers will feel they reside in 1828 in New South Wales amidst exiled criminals, some free people, the soldiers, and the Aborigine. In many ways, the setting steals the show as Robin Adair provides a vivid look at society in the penal colony. Nic is a terrific lead protagonist who diligently works the investigation though he knows the military officers for the most part scorn his action back in England and that the felons loathe him also. Fans will appreciate this strong whodunit in Australia. The early nineteenth century comes alive with Nic's probe.

History without a Good Mystery

As an historical novel, Death and the Running Patterer: A Curious Murder Mystery by Robin Adair provides the reader a nice glimpse of Australia in the early 1800s. As a mystery, however, the book is sorely lacking.

It is, without question, a mystery as to who is committing the various murders throughout the book and why, but unfortunately, in terms of being able to undertake the classic - and for many whodunit fans, enjoyable - race to out-think the investigating protagonist and at least guess who the murderer might be before the main character hits upon it ... well forget it. Not only are there zero clues available as to the final murderer, but even as I read the murderer's confession scene, I kept thinking, "No, this has to be some sort of farce to force the real murderer to stand up." Sadly, it is not a trick, and in order to explain all the deaths and the rationales, the murderer's confession goes on for three chapters.

Yes, that's right - a three chapter confession. Three chapters are required to explain why the murderer did it all because until that moment, through 46 chapters, the reader is not provided a single insight as to who, how, and why.

Instead, the reader is treated to such helpful clues as: "So Captain Rossi, in exchange for the recent secret Dunne had discovered truthfully answered the question that Dunne could, and should, have asked days earlier" (pp. 197-198). Now, the reader does not learn the "the recent secret" until the murderer's confession ten chapters later. Nor does the reader learn the question that Dunne could, and should, have asked.

Another "clue" comes later, "The Spanish doctor now spoke clearly to him. And his message was breathtaking, confirming all of Dunne's suspicions" (pp. 230-231). That's it. No explanation beyond that. No more about what Dunne suddenly understood, what his suspicions were, nothing. Until the book's end, of course, when he confronts the murderer just before the three chapter confession.

Thus, to consider this book as a mystery is to do disservice to the whole genre, from Poe forward. The only mystery is why the author made the types of mistakes that any Fiction Writing 101 class would have caught.

As an historical novel that just happens to have a sidebar of a murderer on the loose, then the book stands up a bit better - and it's why I gave the book 2 stars rather than just one. The main protagonist is a "patterer" - someone who memorizes the local papers and then repeats various stories (for a fee) to the mostly illiterate population that made up Sydney, Australia in 1828. The book is full of descriptions, characters and explanations of Australian life, customs, culture, and society in Sydney - at least the European portions thereof (the Aboriginal characters are few and play only a peripheral role).

That said, the historical part of the book tends to sway back and forth between a novel and an actual historical account and explanation. In other words, the protagonist explains various points of Australian life to the reader throughout, digressing away from the story and the reader's fictive dream into an explanatory paragraph or two about something, reminiscent of a digression one might find in a news article about some event in a faraway region.

Being able to sustain the fictive dream is essential to a good historical NOVEL, just as an providing information and subtle clues is essential to a good MYSTERY. Unfortunately, the lack of either dooms Death and the Running Patterer: A Curious Murder Mystery by Robin Adair to be a second-rate book ... at best.

If you must read this book, then wait until it's in the bargain bin, at a used bookstore, or in your local library. Spend your monies on the much, much better fare out there - including, if you're tastes run to Australia, Gunshot Road: An Emily Tempest Investigation.

I was really looking forward to reading this novel, I thought the premise sounded like it would make an interesting and exciting mystery.

Nicodemus Dunne was a Bow Street Runner before he found himself deported to Australia as a convict. Now he makes his living as a running patterer, reading the newspapers to a variety of customers who pay for his services. Because of his experience investigating crime the governor has asked for Dunne's assistance discovering who's responsible for the recent murder of a soldier. Before Dunne can examine the body of the victim the murderer has committed another crime. As Dunne makes inquiries regarding the mysterious note that was sent to the governor the bodies pile up.

This book was not my cup of tea. I didn't care for the style of writing, the constant explanation of seemingly every bit of interesting history incorporated into the story only served to stall the story itself and irritate the reader. For example on page 163 the author fills us in on the history of the stethoscope, page 167 offers details on the brisky, a large horse drawn vehicle, page 173 gives us details on false teeth and page 184 illuminates the origin of the slang word 'tup'. One of the things I love most about reading historical fiction is learning little tid bits just like the ones this author incorporated into his story. Unfortunately the technique he used was so heavy handed that it completely detracted from rather than added to the interest of the story.

There was very little character development, the graphic description of gory details of the murders were too graphic and the love scene and its aftermath was really distasteful. The number of coincidences were too many and the mystery itself just wasn't satisfying.

fun for series fans

Meat dishes are popular at every family reunion and the desserts are so delicious readers will want to try the recipe of each one. Readers will find this cookbook one of the better ones based on a fictional series on the market.

Another peek into Moose County life

In addition to the recipes, the reader is treated to snippets of dialogue along the way. I like the idea of identifying the volume in which the recipe appears. It helps me remember some of the action of the particular story. I've got my volume tagged with lots of "try this" notations. "Melinda's Minties" disappeared quickly when I took a batch to work...and it really wasn't put together the way the directions were given. I've got a couple of cookie recipes waiting in the wings that I might use for cookie exchanges. One of them employs potato chips! This is a neat book to have, particularly if you like the Koko and YumYum books.

A Gifted Book from a Gifted Poet and Doctor

A gifted book from a gifted poet, doctor, and anthologist. "A Blessing in Disguise" flows gently from its soothing cover to its final page. Cohen's poems provide lovely transitions from one author to the next. Cohen has amassed an impressive collection of stories and storytellers. The intimacy she has evoked from some of our more influential individuals is compelling and applicable.

In this follow-up to Lone Star Justice, Utley tells how the Texas Rangers entered the 20th century as an effective if idiosyncratic law enforcement outfit and entered the 21st century as the investigative arm of the Texas Department of Public Safety. In a dry style, Utley describes the Rangers' various commanders, troopers and exploits. Through the first third of the 20th century, the Rangers operated in an extralegal fashion—their existence was at the whim of whoever occupied the governor's mansion in Austin. It wasn't until 1935 that the Rangers were made official and brought into the newly formed DPS. Utley is far too enamored of the Rangers for his book's good. While his precise if plodding prose doesn't hype the Rangers' exploits, and he acknowledges a "dark period" early in the 20th century when weak leaders failed to control their men, he treads so lightly on so many issues—prisoner treatment (brutal), racial integration (belated) and especially gender equality (a glaring problem Utley chalks up to "the lack of female applicants")—that it is hard to see this as the definitive account it aspires to be. 30 b&w illus. What he leaves out

Utley doesn't delve enough into the sorry state of the Rangers in the Rio Grande Valley from 1910-1917. At that time a corrupt band of them killed Mexican-Americans with impunity as part of a land grab that transferred 90 percent of the lands in the Valley from Hispanic to Anglo landowners. All of these transfers were "legal" because they were recorded at the courthouse, but most were done under threat of death by Rangers who supported the Anglo speculators.
This is not to condemn all Rangers. There were plenty of them who were exemplary, but to ignore this part of their history does no one any favors.

A True Master Rescues History from the Pit of Myth

Robert M. Utley follows his masterful account of the first century of the Texas Rangers, Lone Star Justice, with another tour de force, bringing the story up to date. Brilliantly written and meticulously documented, as always with this celebrated historian of the West, this book traces the transformation of a frontier peace force at the beginning of the 20th century to today's internationally recognized investigative and law-enforcement force, a small band of efficient professionals whose frontier history will always hang over them. Casting off frontier ways was not always easy, politically or professionally, as Utley clearly explains. He is not afraid to deal with the controversial aspects of his subject's history, in particular repeated charges of racism and high-handed brutality. This is no love poem to this sometimes controversial organization, as Utley takes on the negative as well as the positive, with judiciouos balance. On the whole, his judgment of the Rangers, for all the regrettable elements of their past, is favorable, and he concludes that the organization has not so much overcome its history as learned from it. A welcome corrective to the romanticizing that usually characterizes stories about the Rangers. Recommended to anyone interested in the history of Texas, the West, and law enforcement. Given that issues involving the US border with Mexico are in the forefront lately, this book provides informative background.

An accurate accounting of the modern-day Texas Rangers. A must read for the Texas Ranger enthusiast and those interested in the history of law enforcement in Texas. I loved the section about "Garrison's Rangers". A real good read!! I highly recommend.

I'm a huge fan of The DiVinci Code and Angels and Demons movies that are based on Dan Brown's books. I'm always interested in a good conspiracy theory, especially such things as secret societies. I've always been curious abot the Freemasons and was very excited to have the chance to review this book.

There are several key points in Freemasonry that can be confusing. Some are fact, some are fiction. If you are interested in finding out more about the Illuminati, Templars and certain historical events, you will be surprised at all of the information crammed into only 224 pages.

There were some bits and pieces of this book that I thought were a bit hard to read. Either the book had a few dry spots or maybe it was just my mood at the time. Overall, it's a good read when you're in the mood to build your knowledge.

High school reunion and murder

Geraldine Porter and her granddaughter, Madison, go to San Francisco to accompany Rosie Norman, an old student of Gerry's, to her thirtieth high school reunion. Gerry is looking forward to seeing some of her old students. David Bridges, star athlete, is who Rosie is looking forward to seeing. He's been sending her gifts and she's expecting a romantic reunion.

When David is murdered and Rosie is a suspect, Gerry sets out, with a little help from Madison, to solve the murder and take suspicion off Rosie.

I like this series a lot. All the miniatures she creates sound really interesting. I wish there were pictures of them. I like the way she started using Madison's computer skills more in this one. I also enjoyed the descriptions of San Francisco since I was there once and recognized some of them.

Having a murder set around a reunion was great, too. There are always old jealousies that can be capitalized on. This is a great series and a quick cozy mystery to read. I highly recommend it and the full series.

Intricate plotting

Margaret Grace returns to to her miniaturist novels with the most complex plot in this series to date. While I personally would love to see her return to her Camille Minichino personna with a new periodic table mystery, I'll have to be satisfied with this series. Maybe it is just because I recently returned from a high school reunion, but I could relate to the characters. They seemed like classmates I had known. The author sprinkled "red herrings" throughout and kept me guessing as to the murderer's identity until the end. The post-resolution wrap-up seemed a bit slow, but there were a lot of ends to be tied up. While complex, I enjoyed as much as the smell of Ghiradelli chocolate. (You'll have to read the book to understand this reference.)

Full-Scale Curiosity, Miniature Impulse Control

I feel as if I'm quibbling. The plot is well-developed, the characters are well-rounded, and the writing is not really an issue. But
I have to admit a prejudice here. There's a fine line for me between appropriate curiosity on the part of an amateur sleuth and sheer, dumb, inappropriate intrusiveness. This, and all the "Miniature" books that I've read cross that line for me. I suppose that it's a way around the Constitutional barriers to all-out investigation, such as rules of evidence, probable cause, etc. Many of us ARE frustrated by these factors, and an author may certainly be tempted to cast these aside to advance the story and the heroine's status. Each reader must ultimately decide the level of reckless hubris he or she can tolerate in a character. Let's just say that were she the grandmother of my child, Gerry Porter wouldn't be spending much time with her.
