From Publishers Weekly
Lt. Eve Dallas, a top homicide cop for the New York Police and Security Department (the law enforcement agency for a mid 21st-century New York City), faces one of the more challenging cases of her career in bestseller Robb's exciting 31st in death novel (after Kindred in Death). When someone cuts off the head of Bart Minnock, the genius founder of the computer gaming company U-Play, apparently while he was role-playing against an imaginary opponent in a prototype of a fantasy adventure that could rock the industry, Eve investigates. Security logs show no one entered Minnock's building around the time of his murder, presenting a futuristic variation on the classic locked-room mystery. Aided by her husband, Roarke, who was a potential business rival of the victim, Dallas focuses on who would benefit from Minnock's death. Robb is the pseudonym of romantic suspense author Nora Roberts. (Feb.)

From Booklist
Even though Fantastical was still in the testing phase, Bart Minnock was certain the virtual-reality game would murder the competition. Instead, Bart is the one found dead. Now Lieutenant Eve Dallas has to come up with a plausible theory as to how someone could bypass the foolproof security in the millionaire’s holo-room and decapitate him. The fact that the popular gaming guru doesn’t seem to have any enemies isn’t making Eve’s job any easier, but the more time Eve spends investigating the case, the more evidence she finds that several people may have had a reason for wanting Bart out of the way. Now, with a little hands-on training from her husband, Roarke, a computer-gaming expert, Eve sets out to write a program for catching a clever killer. In the thirtieth addition to her best-selling Eve Dallas series, Robb successfully mixes a classic locked-room murder with plenty of cutting-edge twenty-first-century technology, and the end result is an ingenious tale of crime that delivers plenty of Robb’s patented dangerous chills and passionate thrills --John Charles

A fantastic new book in the "In Death" - series that concentrates on friendship
By Katzenjammer123
When Bart Minnock, co-owner of a popular video game firm, is found brutally murdered Eve Dallas takes the case. And it's not an easy one for Eve.
Bart seemed to be a great, happy guy that nobody had trouble with. But finding a motive is not the only problem for Eve. Another is to find out how Bart was decapitated without anybody else in the room.
Eve must get past her own convictions about what is possible in the real world to close this case and find justice for Bart.

What I love about "Fantasy in Death" is that it concentrates on friendship. So there are lots of interactions between Eve and her colleagues, especially Peabody and Nadine. The scenes between Nadine and Eve are awesome and I like how the dynamics in their friendship are portrayed.
I was relieved that the new case is not so dark and hard to read like the ones in "Kindred in Death".
Another thing I love about "Fantasy in Death" is that this time Eve is the strong one in the relationship with Roarke. Roarke has some trouble to deal with the case because he knew the victim but Eve is there for him just like he is always there for her. It's awesome to see how she handles the fights with him and is understanding even when he hits her below the belt (for once Roarke is not 100% perfect!). But of course there are also some sexy and very sweet scenes between Eve and Roarke and whenever I read about them as a pair I'm just happy.
The mystery part of the story was very interesting and I didn't know who the bad guy was until it was revealed.

So, "Fantasy in Death" is another awesome book by J.D. Robb and I'm already excited to read "Indulgence in Death", coming in November 2010.

Intriguing locked room mystery
By Jayster
I love a good locked door mystery and J.D. Robb's Fantasy in Death delivers.

Long time friends Bart, Cill, Var and Benny are on the verge of releasing a state-of-art holo-game. Bart tests the game in the isolation and secured holo-room of his locked apartment and is killed. There are no clues. No weapon, no evidence of an intruder, no witnesses, nothing.

This is the crime super-cop, Lt. Eve Dallas, investigates with a little help from husband, Roarke. His input is more as a consultant and assists Feeney off screen, although he's there when Eve needs him. Eve struggles to understand e-tech, as always, but it is because she doesn't understand the environment that she can think of the unusual solution. I had my own suspects, but didn't truly settle on one until late in the book. Canny readers will pick up on the pivotal moment.

Fans of J.D. Robb will be excused for thinking this book is familiar with a particular scenario in the first of the series, Naked in Death, I know it rang a bell with me - but when you consider the two-year time frame, it's not such a leap.

I would have given the book five stars, except for the laziness of the copy-editor. This English version has unfortunate carriage returns in the middle of sentences, words that need spaces in between and comma issues. There are also problems with 'voice'. At one stage, I couldn't tell who was speaking, Roarke or Eve. Roarke doesn't have the speech patterns from previous books and the concept of 'friendship' is a bit belaboured.

Overall - if you can ignore the copy-edit problems - the story is great read and fans will be satisfied.

The beginning of the end...
By Jenn B.
This, my fellow Eve and Rourke fans, is the the beginning of the end. Not in a horrible, "OMG, this series has totally gone downhill" but in the slow, beautiful way stories about couples come to a resolution. As Roberts says in the video on this page, people grow and change - Eve has had made amazing personal and emotional leaps from the first In Death novel and Rourke has been right beside her. "Fantasy" shows what happens when that growth starts to pay off. The entire time I was reading "Fantasy in Death", I felt like I was reuniting with friends I hadn't seen since their wedding and was now watching them interact as a couple that is deeply and passionately in love. Granted, Roberts sets it up way with a consistent narrative thread around relationships but not once did I feel she was pushing Eve and Rourke as a couple in the reader's face. Each time it emerged, it made perfect sense and was delightful to read. This is a series about Eve and Rourke and some books have been relationship-lite and cop-heavy. "Fantasy" is the ideal balance. Because it is book 30, the ending scenes gave my heart a bit of a stutter but the resolution only reinforced the consequences of Eve's growth as a woman and a wife. There is one meta-moment that I read as a shout out to fans (an Eve and Rourke conversation echoes comments that Nora Roberts has made about the end of the series) that made me chuckle and the technology has gone into truly science fiction, reinforcing that this is a series set in 2058. Like any good scifi author, Roberts/Robb has given us enough science to make is plausible and enough fiction to make it cool.

Fans of the series will no doubt read this book because that's what you do when a new one comes out. If you are new to the series and wondering if this is a good starting point, I say yes. Joining Eve and Rourke and Peabody (who I argue is one of the best written sidekicks in fiction) this far in their relationships will only make the journey from the beginning that much more enjoyable.

As an aside, all authors (romance or not) can learn so much about Roberts/Robb's skill with dialog. At a pivotal moment, when in the hands of a lesser author, Eve might scream, shout, beat her fist against her breast - she simply said three words and that sentence did more to communicate the depth of growth, emotion, and change in character than would seem possible.

Auriane, warrior maiden of the Chattian tribe, was sworn to remove the cursed Romans from the lands of the Rhine. Then fate intervened: she was captured, brought to Rome in chains, and trained to fight in the arenas as a gladiator - only to fall in love with a Roman aristocrat, Marcus Arrius Julianus, and become his wife.

Marcus and Auriane have lived in tranquility for years but, without his knowledge, Auriane is a traitor to Rome. Plundering her husband's coffers for nearly a decade, Auriane has provided her people with enough wealth to arm themselves. Now, Auriane's betrayal has been discovered, and if her duplicity reaches the Roman authorities, her life - and the lives of her family - will be forfeit.

From Publishers Weekly
Gillespie (The Light Bearer) continues the adventures of her larger-than-life Germanic heroine, Auriane. In the first installment, Auriane, the daughter of a great "hero-chief" of her native Chattian tribe, was captured by the Romans and trained as a gladiator before being rescued by Marcus Arrius Julianus. Now, seven years later, Auriane and Marcus live in the frontier province of Germania Superior on a sprawling estate with their daughters, Avenahar and Arria Juliana. The idyllic interlude is interrupted when the Chattians, who are being threatened by another Germanic tribe, the Cheruscans, look to Auriane for their salvation. Torn between her people and her family, Auriane rejects pleas to return to personally lead the Chattian resistance, and instead steals from her husband to secretly fund the Chattians' defense efforts. When her activities are discovered, Auriane is tried for treason and sentenced to death. Compounding her troubles, Avenahar runs away and joins the Chattian resistance, an unknown assassin stalks Marcus and a political rival kidnaps Arria Juliana. This is historical fiction for adrenaline junkies: the pace is furious, the action ferocious and the suspense unrelenting. (Nov.)

Riveting drama of life on the Roman frontier
By Kyron
The Light Bearer is such a broad epic, I didn't think there was anything more this author could "do" with these characters, but she proved me wrong. Lady of the Light opens out into a whole new realm, showing us up-close the private lives of Auriane, Marcus and the Roman townspeople in a small first-century Roman province, while maintaining all the wildness, the color, the unpredictability, of Light Bearer. The gut-wrenching choices Auriane must make grabbed my sympathies. She's forced to choose between two absolutes - what she owes to her tribe, and what she owes to her family - and the way this is resolved at the end is totally unexpected. Marcus's dilemma is just as dire - he is being systematically hunted down by a madman desperate to kill him in revenge for the Emperor Domitian's assassination. Most compelling is the aurochs hunt where the assassin strikes - it's described in such lush detail, you will feel you were there. In some ways this book is more deeply psychological than Light Bearer - yet the author manages this without ever slowing the brisk pace. The two books, in my opinion, accomplish two entirely different things, and do both wonderfully. Lady of the Light takes you down roads traveled rarely or never, and it's chock full of delicious details of some very obscure places in history - and it all seems so real. I particularly enjoyed the way this book delves deeply into women's mysteries in this ancient era. The prophetess Ramis, who looms large here, is a striking character, and she reveals much more of herself than she did in Light Bearer. The chapters in which Avenahar is initiated by the forest seeresses drew me into a magic world that I didn't want to leave. The ending was tantalizing - it left me eager for the next volume.

Another great book by a wonderful author
By vannel7
"Lady of the Light" is the long-awaited sequel to "the Light Bearer". Around eight years have passed between the end of the last book and this book. We find Auriane living comfortably with her family in a villa on the Germanic frontier. All seems to be well, but Auriane is keeping a few secrets from both her "husband" Marcus Julianus and her daughter Avenahar. The secret she is keeping from Marcus could cost them both dearly, for she is secretly supporting her Chattian tribe with weapons so they could defend themselves from the Cheruscan invaders. The secret she is keeping from Avenahar is not as threatening, it seems, but Avenahar is a rowdy young woman, not quite unlike her mother was. Auriane is afraid to tell Avenahar who her real father is (Decius) because Avenahar hates all Romans (except Marcus of course). Meanwhile, Marcus Julianus is in some trouble of his own; the Emperor Trajan has been turned against him by his enemies. As for Auriane's daughter with Marcus, Arria Juliana, she is the unfortunate object of a pervert neighbour's desire. Eventually the secrets are revealed and Auriane's family is broken up. Auriane is once again thrown into her unwanted fate of becoming the next Veleda, but that is all I will reveal because everyone should discover for themselves this wonderful book.

I waited it seemed forever for this book to come out and it was worth it. There is never a dull moment in the book and if I did not have so much school work to do I would have finished it in a couple of hours. I did not want the book to end because I was enjoying it so much. I was also seriously hoping that I would not have a serious freak accident (or die, or go blind) before this book came out. Yeah, that's weird, but that is how much I wanted to read the book. Now I cannot wait for the next book to come out. My only rants are that this book was too short and I did not get to find out what happened to a few characters from the first book, such as Sunia, Thorgild, and Coniaric. It was nice though, that some other old characters returned, such as Witgern, Ramis, and Decius. I also felt it was more about Auriane and Avenahar, which I had no problem with, but it would have been nice to see more of Marcus and Arria. I especially enjoyed the parts with Decius because he is one of my favorite characters in the series. I also feel like I can relate a bit to Avenahar because I myself am a "half-breed" and sometimes feel like a stranger in both of my worlds, just like Avenahar. To sum it up, the writing is smooth, the characters are so believable, and the plot is very interesting. I highly recommend this book and "The Light Bearer" to any historical fiction fan or Ancient Rome fan.

Truly an Oprah-worthy book
By Barbara Ling
Donna Gillespie's first book, The Light Bearer, literally changed my life back in 1994 when I first read it. It's the type of novel that speaks individually to each reader and opens paths to their inner self-knowledge; I was always astounded at how I'd struck by deeper and deeper insights at each reading.

Personally, I thought Donna could never outdo herself with The Light Bearer. It has everything any human being could want - thrilling adventure, forbidden love, soul-devouring danger, stark honor, difficult sacrifice, etc. Keep in mind I read it prior to becoming a mother myself.

Now, 12 years later, The Lady of the Light is released. Let me tell you, I have no idea how the author accomplished this but the impact of this book knocked me figuratively flat on my rear. I've been a mom myself now for over a decade, and never never never NEVER have I read a book that speaks to women and men as does this.

You see, Lady of the Light transcends your typical book reading experience. The Light Bearer did too, of course...from a different viewpoint. TLB is a mansion of masterful rooms, each described robustly and fully and coming together beautifully in the end. Each component was described fully and in detail (horrific war, dangerous love, impossible training, hidden treachery, fanatic deceit, etc.)

Lady of the Light, in comparison, had a much more targeted focus... it is the hidden sanctuary that all women, mothers and daughters have secret within their fragile-strong souls. It draws readers into matters of the mind and heart while allowing the tightly-packed action scenes to take the background... leaving instead the center stage to the more subdued yet far more draining struggles of women finding their true inner peace.

Men too, for that matter, will find the material just as resonating; the main character, Marcus, was given not only a stalwart soul but also a woman's understanding as well.

In closing, I have probably re-read Lady of the Light a dozen times by now, and The Light Bearer times past counting. Not because I forget the material, mind you....but each reading simply reveals more about myself to me. I still have no idea how Donna accomplished this. It's uncanny... I've never seen another author with this particular gift. I highly recommend the series.

Bella Bulluci wants nothing to do with superheroes or ubervillains, too bad she is completely surrounded by them in her city of Bigtime. Add in the fact that her family has a history of being superheroes and that she has a power that is more of a hindrance than a help and you have a few of the facts of her current life. Bella has a huge passion - the arts. As a matter of fact, she has been working hard on a new exhibit and gala for the museum. It's almost time for the opening and now she has to hope luck is on her side - oops maybe she should not have thought that.

Debonair is a hero, if not a superhero, who has a secret. He has wanted Bella for a long time. Debonair is nothing like his real self when the mask and costume goes on; he can be the playboy as Debonair. During the gala, he will have the chance to show Bella his stuff when an ubervillian crashes the party to steal a gemstone.

Bella has not changed her mind about being involved with any of the above, but there is something about Debonair that makes her wonder if maybe he could change her mind. But danger follows anyone who protects the innocents and Bella has already lost a loved one that way. Debonair and Bella come together again to defeat the ubervillains who stole the gemstone and threatened her. When the smoke disappears and the dust settles, can Debonair show Bella that not all superheroes are a bad choice or is this romance going to go "poof" and disappear?

Fair warning; do not drink while reading Jinx as you will spend a good portion of the time laughing. Bigtime is full of superheroes and ubervillains and their alter egos, Bella is surrounded by them but would like to just live a nice normal life - yeah right like that is going to happen. Debonair is well known by Bigtime as his other self. As Debonair he is thought of as a playboy and a hero that may or may not be good. Flames and sparks came every time Bella and Debonair come in contact together. I loved both Bella and Debonair and just how they fit together. I also loved that the plot was fast paced and kicking. After my exposure to Bigtime, I will never forget all that a superhero and ubervillan go through the next time I see a superhero cartoon. The humor, passion, outrageous costumes and super gadgets let Jinx be fun loving and perfect for escaping the real world for a few hours.

Disappointing
By Melissa Beaird
This is true story of the investigation of Ann Miller and the murder of her husband Eric Miller as told by Detective Chris Morgan to Amanda Lamb.

Having seen Detective Morgan on 48 Hours, I thought he came across well and seemed a likeable guy. None of that came through in the book. In the book it seemed as though he were constantly second guessing his co-workers and colleagues decisions, as he simultaneous acknowledges their abilities.

One of my biggest problems with the book is we know nothing about Ann. There were no interview with her friends, no interviews with previous boyfriends, nada, zip. She was born to a good family, went to school, married Eric, got a job, had a baby and had a few affairs. That's it.

In the end, I felt like this wasn't the Ann Miller story, it wasn't the Eric Miller story, it was the Detective Morgan story, and not a very good one at that.

Ann's story is fascinating based on the fact that she married this, by all accounts, great guy, and for some unknown reason, and with apparent lack of real motive, decided to kill him rather than divorce him. This book not only does nothing to attempt to satisfy or explain it, it doesn't even appear that the author tried to.

As a side noteI also was extremely offended that Detective Morgan states he wanted to do this book for Clare, the daughter of Eric and Ann, so that she'll know the truth. What truth? Ann killed Eric, we don't know why. The book consists of Detective Morgan grandstanding and bashing Ann Miller. Why would Clare ever want to read that? Don't we think the mere fact that it happened would be bad enough? Why would she want to read somebody else's perspective on their mother, with little to no facts to back it up?

If you're interested in this story, watch the 48 Hours and do some online reading. You can get all of this online without.

Could have been better
By K. Curtis
This book was a disappointment from the first page. The story was more about the investigator than the victim or the murderer. I like background not every single though the investigator had in this case. Too bad, interesting case poorly written.

A Calculated Fluck and the Tortured Soul
By MJS
Despite the subtitle of "the untold story of a homicide investigator's crusade for truth and justice" potential readers might assume, as I did, that this book would provide an understanding of the crime, the victim (Eric Miller) and the murderer (Ann Miller). I am sorry to report this is not the case. Maybe a detailed police procedural showing the ins and outs of the investigation, you hope? Not so fast my friend. How about a reasonably chronological telling of the investigation itself, you ask. Au contraire. What will you get?

Would you believe repeated hints about the weight of the cop in question along with regular updates on his sartorial tastes accompanied by detours into other investigations that have nothing to do with the Miller case? I've read some bad true crime in my years but this is truly one of the lamest. This is not the story of the Eric Miller case in any way, shape or form. It is, at best, several years in the life of policeman Chris Morgan who happens to be in charge of the Miller case for some of those years. Which would be lame enough but the way Amanda Lamb tells this story makes it a thousand times worse.

First, Amanda Lamb seems to be under the impression that Chris Morgan is a piece of rare Americana. An investigative Rousseau, helping humankind to see life in a completely new way. Also, she's obsessed with his physique. Think I'm exaggerating? In the first 10 pages Lamb alludes to Morgan's size 5 times. His "ample frame", "formidable frame", fears that his favorite chair will collapse under his weight, etc. For the rest of the book few pages go by without another reminder that Morgan is a big guy. So many reminders that I began to wonder if perhaps we were dealing with a badge-wearing Jabba the Hutt. This was distracting to say the least. When the action (and I use that word with caution) includes Morgan hiding in the bushes to watch arch criminal Ann Miller not leave her house for hours my thoughts immediately turned to "my God, how large IS that oleander bush?"

Other aspects of Morgan's anatomy make frequent appearances. There's his "gut" for example. Morgan's gut is pretty special. Whereas the average gut gives hints about feelings and the odd bit of intuition, Morgan's gut provides detailed facts. "His gut told him it was not his shift, not his squad". His gut can tell time AND read the duty roster. Amazing! Then there's his head, which is really only mentioned so that we can read more about Morgan's endlessly fascinating white fedora. Police fashion - does true crime get any better?

Here's a tip for all true crime writers: There is very little reason for ongoing detailed descriptions of police attire for the simple fact that it comes in only two flavors: uniform and plainclothes. Yes, there is a subset of plainclothes specific to "undercover" but that is dictated by the situation and is not indicative of the character of the wearer. The specifics of the plainclothes may be described one for the sake of completeness or to provide "insight" into the personality of the police officer in question but regular updates on the apparel choice of the day are not necessary. Years of reading true crime have given me ample opportunities to ponder this and I can confidently say that the only scenario in which ongoing sartorial info is required would be if the police officer liked to dress as a different circus performer on a rotating basis. A tutu on Monday, the lion tamer outfit on Tuesday, the clown suit on Wednesday. Other than that, leave the clothes out of the narrative.

This book is awful. I don't know what Chris Morgan is like but he can't possibly be the self-enchanted oaf Lamb depicts. In her telling, Morgan spends the first half of the book criticizing Sgt Fluck's handling of the Miller case (Morgan's not even on in), jumping to the conclusion that Ann Miller is guilty because ... well, because he knows it, and spouting wisdom like "the truth is simple, if it's not simple, it's not the truth." The hilarity is just getting rolling though, since once Morgan is actually assigned to the case he doesn't get around to reading the case files until two years after the murder. Who would expect to find probative, investigative information in the case files! He actually says he doesn't want to understand Ann Miller or any other criminal. He knowledge of the victim appears limited to his regional prejudices of the Midwest.

It is a dark, dark day when a true crime book leaves the reader wondering if the plus-size flat foot in charge didn't create a case against a woman just because he decided she was a "psychopath", a "criminal mastermind," and a "master manipulator" without a single fact to back up any of his pronouncements. I do think Ann Miller is guilty but since Lamb doesn't see fit to tell us what the investigators actually learned and never provides insights from people who knew Eric or Ann I can only imagine what facts were. Why show us anything when we can just bask in Chris Morgan's profundities, such as "it's no mystery crime makes people stupid"? Apparently it's especially brutal on the IQs of certain crime writers.

I'm hard pressed to pick the worst thing in this book. The phrase "prior murderess events" is convoluted and meaningless but the winner has to be Lamb spending pages on the fact that a friend of Ann Miller is playing The Dixie Chicks "Earl's Gotta Die" when the police question her. I hate country music in all forms and even I know the song is called "Goodbye Earl" and that it sounds nothing like a "funeral dirge" nor is it likely to "waft" anywhere. Oh, and William of Ockham was a monk and a philosopher, not a mathematician.

Even the ending, thankful as I was for it, was lousy. More time is spent on the question of Chris Morgan's retirement - will the showboating arm of the law start drawing his pension before he final star turn at the trial? - then on any aspect of the trial. It ends with Morgan being "finished with it", just SO over it, "alone with his tortured soul."

When in the acknowledgements section Lamb thanks her "collaborators" it actually took me a second to realize that she did not use that word in the sense of "those who assist the enemy." Some stories really are better left untold if they're going to be told with staggering ineptitude.

About the Author
Clive Cussler is the author of many New York Times bestsellers, most recently The Spy and Lost Empire. He lives in Arizona.
Grant Blackwood caught the fiction-writing bug at the age of eighteen while reading Clive Cussler’s The Mediterranean Caper , and spent the next four years working in different styles of fiction before settling on novel-length work.

Mr. Blackwood is a U.S. Navy veteran, having spent three years active duty aboard the guided missile frigate USS Ford as an Operations Specialist and a Pilot Rescue Swimmer.

Two months after leaving the Navy in July 1987, Mr. Blackwood started the first draft of his first novel, which as he puts it, “wasn’t good enough to be published, but good enough to earn a spot in my sock drawer. It took me several more years of rewriting before I realized the publishers and agents who’d been saying ‘no’ were saying no for a good reason.”

Twelve years to the day after leaving the Navy, Mr. Blackwood received an offer from Penguin-Putnam/Berkley to buy his second novel, The End of Enemies, which hit the stands May 8th.

Mr. Blackwood is 36 years old and lives in Minnesota, where he is working on this next novel, the second in the Briggs Tanner series of thrillers, which is due out in Spring/Summer of 2002.

You do NOT want to play Trivial Pursuit with these two!
By Susan Tunis
"Fortune favors the bold." That's the oft-quoted motto of Sam and Remi Fargo, the husband and wife protagonists of Clive Cussler's latest co-authored offering. Spartan Gold is the first book in a new series penned by Grant Blackwood. The Fargos are "treasure hunters and adventurers." Sam's background is mechanical engineering and Remi's is in anthropology and history, but both appear to be polymaths. In their line of work, they have ample opportunity to put their numerous skills to good use.

As the novel opens, they're hip deep in the muck of a Maryland swamp. They're looking for buried treasure, but what they find is something altogether unexpected. It's a Nazi-era German mini-sub, very, very far from where one would expect to find such a thing. An attempt to get the scoop on local rumors of such an anomaly is aborted by their source's kidnapping right before their eyes. After the Fargos free their friend from the professional operative interrogating him about a shard of a wine bottle he found in the Pocomoke, the plot really takes off.

It comes as no surprise when the Fargos' crack research team (back at their home base in La Jolla) links the wine bottles to "Napoleon's Lost Cellar," and then links these 12 wine bottles, secreted around the world, to a major hidden treasure. This is because we'd seen the great man make his (unseen) discovery of ancient treasure in the novel's prologue. It is this unknown treasure that Sam and Remi are seeking, but they've got competition in the form of a ruthless, Ukrainian crime boss and his henchmen. Unlike the Fargos, Hadeon Bondaruk knows exactly what they're seeking and he'll stop at nothing to possess it. So begins a cat and mouse chase across the globe. It's an epic scavenger hunt with high stakes. Along the way, there's breath-taking scenery and a few history lessons leading up to the inevitable showdown between the good guys and the bad guys.

It's an okay start, as these things go. The characters are more archetypes than flesh and blood people. But, hey, it's a series; there's time for character development later. There are some fun supporting characters, most notably Yvette Fournier-Desmarais. I expect we'll see more of her. Sadly, I can't say the same for their sidekick researcher, Selma. She was a cardboard cutout masquerading as a character. For now, Sam and Remi display that typical Cusslerian insouciance in the face of danger, and snap off witty banter whenever possible. It's easy to joke about their arcane knowledge. (The rugs of Yoruk nomads? Really?) And an early reference to Henri Archambault elicits the response, "THE Henri Archambault?" Why, yes, Napoleon Bonaparte's chief enologist. He's practically a household name.

Still, despite their ridiculous knowledge base, the Fargos are refreshingly fallible. This is probably my favorite thing about the novel. They're chasing cryptic clues. They have to work really hard to solve them. Sometimes they even have to sleep on it. The puzzle solving is depicted unusually realistically. (I mean, in those National Treasure films, riddles are solved in a matter of seconds.) And Sam and Remi make other mistakes, too. They get lost occasionally. They screw up. What can I say? Imperfect protagonists are infinitely more interesting in my book.

The story is light, very light, and fast-paced for the most part--though my interest did flag a bit in the middle. But then our heroes took the action into the proverbial lion's den, and that picked things up straight through the ending. By and large the writing is fine, though there are some quirky redundancies to the text.

Fans of Cussler's signature mix of history and adventure will likely give this one a thumbs up. It's nothing to write home about, but Grant Blackwood is off to a respectable start.

The Cussler formula continues
By David Pruette
I am a fan of Clive Cussler's books. I find them to be consistently entertaining and that usually includes the ones with co-authors. Spartan Gold is a Clive Cussler book written with Grant Blackwood. I assume that means that Mr. Blackwood did most of the writing. The book is a quick read with short chapters, exactly what you would expect from a Clive Cussler book. The story moves along, and I found that I always wanted to see what would happen next. So, on the whole, the book was fun to read.

However, I have some problems with the Cussler industry and the number of books being turned out in recent months. This is the third one I have read in the last few months - Corsair, Medusa, and Spartan Gold. All were written by co-authors. The books are becoming extremely formulaic, and Spartan Gold is no exception. We always have the following:

- Heroes who perform unbelievable feats. Either two heroes with equal billing or one hero with an equally capable sidekick. Spartan Gold unveils Sam and Remi Fargo, a husband and wife team with great skills and an unlimited budget.
- A back office support team that can provide anything needed in an amazingly speedy fashion
- Plots that grow increasingly convoluted and that usually require considerable historical explanation
- An evil bad guy with huge resources and equally huge plans
- A brief appearance by Cussler himself

Having made those points, I have to admit that I enjoyed Spartan Gold. I would not want to have to take a test on my understanding of all the history, and I found some of the feats slightly hard to accept. I look forward to the day when Mr. Cussler writes the next book by himself and possibly includes some twists and turns that we don't find very familiar.

As a final point, I wonder if the authors receive compensation for product placement as in films. Our heroes in the book make constant use of their Macbooks and iPhones and also rely heavily on Google. All good products. I think Apple should be pleased.

Love this book! Love Sam and Remi Fargo!
By J. Blackwood
From start to finish, this book was just plain fun. Wish it would have come out earlier this summer, because it is the perfect beach read. Had a great time following the Fargos around the world as they tried to solve this riddle -- equal parts mystery, adventure, secret history, hidden treasures, and exploration. The rapport between Sam and Remi is natural, the dialogue light where it needed to be light, and serious where it needed to be serious. (On a side note, my wife picked up the book when I finished and she's enjoying it too. Remi Fargo holds her own as a heroine)

Cussler and Blackwood weaved the history behind this story nicely into the action, and the Lost Cellar riddles were a blast to unravel. I never felt like I was getting a history lesson while I was following the plot, which is something I can't say about all of these kinds of thrillers. I read these kinds of books for their "escapist pleasure" quotient, and SPARTAN GOLD gave me just that.

Highly recommended, can't wait for the second installment of the Fargo adventures.

From Publishers Weekly
In this at times hilarious but slight sequel to Sunny's erotic paranormal debut, Mona Lisa Awakening (2006), Mona Lisa, a "Mixed Blood Queen" who's part human and part Monère (a humanoid race that originally came from the moon), moves from Manhattan to the New Orleans area to reign over 423 Monère. Lisa, who can change into a Bengal tiger and heal through intimate relations, learns much about Monère culture, but the matriarchal clan's history and their plans for Earth are never sufficiently explained, nor is there much of a plot other than a turf battle between Lisa and Mona Louisa, a rival queen from Mississippi, who despises Lisa's tainted blood. The sex scenes range from the extremely passionate to the repulsively beastly. Hopefully, the next installment will have a more cohesive story line. (Feb.)

Always a drama
By Kay Dault
Well for a series to keep the same basic characters, guess some drama is needed - but just felt that this was overboard.

Mona Lisa is constantly amazed / crazed over the differences in this society. And the up again / down again between her and Gryphon got boring. You would think that she could ask some questions - try to learn more about how things work in the new world she lives in. Nope, just going to wing it.

Understand that being raised as human is going to limit how quickly she can change and/or even adapt, but think that I would like her better if she would embace all of her new powers - not be afraid of them.

Keeps Getting Better!
By M. Valle
The story is developed nicely now that Mona Lisa has been crowned queen. However, Mona Louisa is still on a mission to destroy her. I enjoyed the greater role that Halcyon has here. He has claimed a piece of Mona Lisa's heart and his character is just as likeable as Gryphon's and Amber's. Amber is the only one that acts consistently in Mona Lisa's best interest. Gryphon keeps things from her and Halcyon knows that his interest only endangers her. Amber is the best choice for her from the three.

From Publishers Weekly
Happily-ever-afters continue to bloom in book three of Roberts's sugary Bride Quartet (after Bed of Roses) as the spotlight shines on pastry chef extraordinaire Laurel McBane. Vows, the Greenwich, Conn., wedding business run by the four BFFs, is also a hotbed for romance, as two of the friends have already found true love and dream of their upcoming nuptials. Laurel, meanwhile, sets her sights on Del, the older brother of Vows partner Parker, a handsome lawyer she's secretly loved since they were teens. Passion erupts, but will they be able to make it last? Laurel's tart fairy tale romance offers few surprises, but it's impossible to deny Roberts's flair for sketching likable couples. (May)

A beautiful, light-hearted and happy love story
By Katzenjammer123
The third book in the Bride Quartet is a beautiful, light-hearted and happy novel about love and friendship.

Laurel and Del have known each other since they were children. Laurel is like a sister for Del, but for her he is the one man she has secretly loved for years.
A heated discussion and a suprising kiss changes everything. They move on to a romantic relationship. Laurel is happy that Del and she are finally more than good friends, but also fears that she will never be the one for him. Del on the other hand is suprised by his feelings for Laurel, nevertheless he is willing to do everything to give them a real chance for a happy end.

I enjoyed reading "Savor the Moment" a lot. Laurel and Del are a great pair and I loved reading about them and the rest of the characters. There is no real drama going on and that's something I appreciate a lot. The story concentrates solely on the characters and the love affair and that's just great.
No development in the book is rushed and Laurel and Del (and the others) have time to get used to the new direction of their relationship. Some may find this boring but I love to get the chance to form a bond with the characters and to understand their personalities.
It was also a joy to learn more about the other main characters in the series. They made me a laugh a lot and especially Mrs. G was heart-warming.

I'm already excited for the final book in the series and to read how Parker and Mal get their "Happy Ever After". Mal fits perfectly in the circle of friends and he seems to be the one man that can help Parker to relax and even forget about her BlackBerry.
I love that Nora Roberts is a stickler for details and that she makes her characters three-dimensional. And that's why in the end I want to thank her for writing yet another book to fall in love with.

Good Easy Read
By Lauren A. Watson
First I want to go ahead and let it be known that my review rating is based on having actually purchased and read the book itself. I have read all three of the books in this series to date and have to say that Laurel's was lacking for me compared to Emma's and Mac's stories. This book did not have the same dialogue that really drew me in on the others. It seemed more cookie cutter - long time love finally realized. I would have liked to have seen more about Del and Laurel getting past having always known each other. I did enjoy though the book as an easy read and will definitely read Parker's story when it comes out. I am really looking forward to hers as she is my favorite of the characters.

As a final note, I really wish any reviews based on the unavailability of this book on the Kindle would be eliminated. Since they are not reviews of the actual book that add anything helpful to readers other than format availability, they serve no purpose other than to bring the overall rating down. Complaints about available formats should be addressed to the publishers and copyright holders that make the determination about format.

Can't wait for Parker's story !!!
By Natalie Matosich
Received this in the mail today and finished within hours after catching myself smiling several times. :) I can not wait until the last book... November can not come soon enough. I love the relationship these four women share. I was never a huge Nora Roberts fan but with this series I have to admit I am hooked. Can't wait till the next one "Happy Ever After"

As a side note I would ignore the one star ratings as the majority do not pertain to the novel itself but instead to an issue with Kindle :)

~Happy Reading :)

From Publishers Weekly
In his well-intentioned but impersonal memoirs, Winters tells the tales left untold by Stephen Ambrose, whose Band of Brothers was the inspiration for the HBO miniseries, but Winters's memoir is disappointingly sparse on details unrelated to troop position. It is in the battles and tactical maneuvers of Easy Company that Winters is most at home: on D-Day, when Easy Company's commanding officer is killed, Winters takes charge minutes after landing deep in German territory and leads an assault against a German battery. He carefully explicates the reasoning behind his strategy, leading the reader along as the Company attacks German machine gun and mortar outposts. The narrative is laced with Winters's soldierly exaltations of pride in his comrades' bravery: "My God, it's beautiful when you think of a guy who was so dedicated to his company that he apologizes for getting hit." Although the intrepidness of the group induces more than a tinge of pride, the memoir is devoid of powerful reflections. In the last, sluggish chapters, Winters devotes an excessive amount of time to letters he has received and to expositions on leadership. Winters is too humble for a genre that requires a little bit of conceit.

From Booklist
Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers (1992) and the HBO miniseries based on it made Easy Company--the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, which fought from D-Day to the end of World War II, with 150 percent casualties--well known to more than -military-history buffs. After both publication and broadcast, Winters, Easy Company's commanding officer, received many requests for more information. Feeling that much of the material Ambrose didn't use deserved an audience, he chose to air it and satisfy all those requests in his memoirs. For those to whom the story is familiar, the major and his collaborator developed an excellent narrative voice to recount Winters' experiences, actions, and thoughts during everything from training to deployment to battle to subsequent occupation. Winters has been praised as an exemplar of leadership, and here he shows what he did to earn that praise and how he did it. Very well done, book as well as war service. Frieda Murray

Review
"There is a saying that 'Great leaders are born not made.' Such a man is Dick Winters... A beautifully written book about a truly great leader. This riveting read clearly reflects Dick Winters's solid character, great integrity, and unerring judgment in critical battlefield situations." —Lieutenant General Harold G. Moore, co-author of We Were Soldiers Once...And Young

"Its modesty, its candor, and its insights into the nature of front-line leadership and the fears and behaviors of men in combat make this memoir a classic ranking with Charles MacDonald's Company Commander." —Dennis Showalter, author of Patton and Rommel

"Dick Winters epitomizes the finest attributes of American citizen-soldiers….a poignant, riveting story with timeless application to the study of leadership in war." —Colonel Lance Betros, Chairman, Department of History, U.S. Military Academy, editor of West Point: Two Centuries and Beyond

"Winters's leadership inspired his soldiers to fight courageously under the most difficult and challenging conditions of battle. [An] extraordinary memoir." —H.R. McMaster, author of Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam

It's like having Dick Winters in your living room.
By Michael P. Gesker
At last Major Dick Winters tells his story in his own words. Although many of the incidents in the book may be familiar to devotees of Stephen Ambrose's book "Band of Brothers" and the marvelous HBO series, Dick Winters' war memoirs are still compelling, enlightening and inspiring.

This volume is the next best thing to having this courageous, thoughtful, and exceedingly modest hero come and sit in your living room to tell you about the adventures and exploits of Easy Company. Time and again Dick Winters embodied the true spirit of the Fort Benning Infantry doctrine of "Follow Me."

Major Winters shares his reflections on the fighting and his tactics from Brecourt Manor and the Eagle's Nest. He is most proud of his unit's work at the Island. "In my estimation, this action by E Company was the highlight of all Easy Company's engagements during the entire war and it also served as my apogee as company commander," Winters tell us.

Major Winters is also quick to commend the gallant work of the men in his company, "The company belonged to the men-the officers were merely caretakers." In reading these pages it becomes abundantly clear that these citizen soldiers were magnificent caretakers of our freedom during some of the darkest hours of the 20th century.

"Leaving Easy Company was the hardest thing I had done in my life," the Major tells us. Putting his book down is pretty damned hard, too.

A great book written by a great man
By jenna brown
I enjoyed reading this book immensely. Dick Winters was an inspiration to many during a very difficult time. I can't even imagine what it must have been like during these battles. Dick shared them well. It was a blessing to read this book. It helped me understand WW2 more fully & appreciate the unspeakable times these soldiers went through.
