Sweet Summer, by Bebe Moore Campbell

"Potent . . . Unforgettable."
--Bharati Mukherjee
The New York Times Book Review

"A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT . . . . While Sweet Summer is infused with experiences unique to African-American culture, it speaks to the universals of human experience."
--The Philadelphia Inquirer
Written with the narrative force of fiction and the lyrical motion of poetry, SWEET SUMMER is Bebe Moore Campbell's elegy to her extraordinary father. Though she lived with her devoted mother and grandmother in the North most of the year, Campbell spent the summers with her father in the South--a man of gargantuan appetites and boundless exuberance. To his daughter, he was a magical presence.
A bittersweet evocation of a divided childhood with its family secrets, surprising discoveries, loneliness, and love, SWEET SUMMER also recalls living on the cusp of the social revolution of the 1960s. Most of all, it is an achingly honest and beautiful reminder of the universal challenge of growing up and facing one's parents as an adult.
"Touching. . . With this candid account and loving tribute to a special man, Campbell breaks through all the stereotypes about black family life."
--New York Daily News

Review
"Campbell is adept at capturing the vulnerability of children and re-creating their innocence, confusion, and anger....An uplifting reflection on family love". -- San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle

From the Back Cover
As a child, Bebe Moore spent her school years in Philadelphia, in a world of women. Surrounded by clouds of Emeraude and Chanel, supported by the strength of her mother, grandmother, aunts, and teachers, she learned by example to mind her p's and q's, to cross her t's and dot her i's. But when summer came, Bebe was sent down South to live with her father -- an extraordinary man who allowed no disability or disadvantage to stop his dreams, and whose powerful presence added a different dimension to his daughter's life. Now, in this acclaimed memoir, the bestselling author of such novels as Brothers and Sisters remembers those sweet summers and shares the bittersweet experience of growing up in 1960s America, finding a place in the world -- and discovering that family may be separated, but it can never be truly divided.

Home Sweet Home
By Audrey H. Sharpe
This book was written by an author I had come to respect by reading several of her other books. She is an excellent storyteller. It was not until I read this book that I knew of her roots. She was, in fact, the granddauthter of my step-grandmother. As I read of her journey to North Carolina, so many memories came back to me. I am a bit younger than her father would have been, but I knew him well. Some of her aunts, uncles and cousins are/were my contemporaries. The Mr. Abe of Sweet Summer was my mother's father! Her discussions about him brought much joy to me. I ensured that my two surviving aunts (Grandpa's daughters) received copies of the book. They, too, were taken back to Pasquotank County, the rutted lane, Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, South Mills, Elizabeth City, the Dismal Swamp.

Miss Mary, Bebe's grandmother, was just as she described her. I spent many a day at that home, feeling the love of Grandpa Abe and "Miss Mary". Dining at their table was a singular treat, though I still marvel at how there was enough food for the collection of children, grandchildren and visitors who may have stopped by.

I wish I had known Bebe Moore Campbell. By the time I knew of the family connection, she had left this earth. I believe she is entertaining the angels with her stories.

I read parts of the book to my granddaughter's fifth grade class. The teacher asked me where she could find it, so I bought one for her. She told my granddaughter that she enjoyed it immensely.

I love, love, loved this memoir!!!
By RYCJ
I simply loved this book through and through; from the touch and feel of the cover, to the sights, sounds and feeling of what’s being depicted… starting with Bebe as a child sitting on the steps sucking her thumb anxiously waiting for her paraplegic father to drive up to the house, retrieving her to spend yet another summer with him in the South; to her grandmothers, her mother and aunts…who she refers to as the bosoms, to the many men, in addition to her dad, who guide her through life; along with the ironies, culture beliefs and occasional clashes and overall relatedness of her memories… there just simply is too, too much to comment on.

In general I really felt for her cousin Michael… got a good chuckle out of that ‘no bread’ (as in money) ‘no meat’ put in a sandwich, and was overjoyed by the overriding message of the narrative making the distinction how the QUALITY of time fathers spend with children affect their lives.

Highly recommended!
