Saving Grace: The True Story of a Mother-to-Be, a Deranged Attacker, and an UnbornChild, by Sarah Brady, Patrick Crowley, Eric Deters

The true story of a mother-to-be, a deranged attacker, and an unborn child.

It seemed like a simple case of mistaken identity. Sarah Brady was nine months pregnant and the baby gifts she registered for were being sent to a Sarah Brody. Little did she know that it was a trap set up by a woman so desperate to be a mother that she would try to steal Sarah's unborn child.

Terrifying Story, Great Book
By rkrystofolski
This book tells the story of Sarah Brady an average young first time mother who is attacked by a deranged psychopath who was planning to slice her open and steal her baby. I have been addicted to true crime books for over 20 years and I have read of 19 cases of attempted or successful newborn kidnapping via cesarean section and have learned how dangerous these women are. They lie to everyone in their lives for 9 months and paint themselves into a corner and when the time comes when their "baby" is due they really believe that it would be better to murder an innocent pregnant woman than to admit to everyone that they lied. Katie Smith was dangerous and I have no doubt in my mind that if Sarah Brady hadn't won that fight she would have been dead, who knows whether her little girl would have survived being delivered by an untrained layperson and Smith would be in prison. This is a tragic story and it's very unfortunate that nobody in Katie Smith's life recognized how mentally ill she was and forced her to get some help because than this whole catastrophe wouldn't have happened. Also after Smith's death her family tried to blame what happened on Sarah Brady despite the fact that Smith had stolen mail from a few other pregnant women as a backup plan in case Sarah Brady's baby couldn't be kidnapped. Sarah Brady was an innocent victim who was put in the position where she had to kill in order to save her own life and the life of her unborn daughter. That's not an easy thing but she had no choice. Katie Smith came at her with a knife and at that point the only options were give in and die, entrusting her child to a madwoman or fight her way to safety. I am so glad that in this case the perpetrator instead of her intended victim died

One of the Worst Books Ever... Seriously, It's That Bad
By Kami M. Fancher
Essentially, this book is the memoir of Sarah Brady, who was attacked by Katie Smith in Katie's attempt to surgically deliver and kidnap Sarah's unborn baby. A harrowing, horrifying experience, that Sarah fought through, and miraculously, survived. I read this book some time after seeing the case highlighted on an episode of Snapped on Oxygen.

While Sarah Brady's story is compelling, and this COULD HAVE BEEN an inspiring, meaningful book, unfortunately, it is terribly subpar. It is chock full of typos. There are elaborate explanations of things that did not need to be explained, and it lacks explanations of other things that should have been explained. There were several sections that seemed to say exactly the same thing as previous sections. The book was contradictory in places; Sarah's boyfriend was described as "humble" and "reluctant" to talk of his days as a high school football hero, then they proceed to quote him speaking "proudly" of his high school football days.

Plus, the adjectives used to describe Sarah and Katie relied heavily on opinions, rather than facts. They described Sarah as beautiful, and, seemingly, a perfect child, student, friend, etc. Katie was described at one point as ugly, and, if I remember correctly, they said something along the lines of Katie being "isolated" due to her ugliness, being overweight and wearing glasses. (Gah! Alienate your audience much?)

At any rate, the language of the book was clearly bent on portraying Sarah as "good" and Katie as "evil," and that bothered me. This was not fiction, not a Disney cartoon... this was the true story of two imperfect people. Though Sarah was totally innocent that fateful day, she is not infallibly "good." And, though Katie plotted and attempted to execute a terribly evil plan, she was not "evil" incarnate. Personally, I think she was terribly mentally ill, and her lack of treatment, unfortunately, rippled into Sarah's and others' lives in a horrendous way.

Personally, I would have appreciated the book being written with more journalistic integrity, rather than being so opinionated, which only served to make Sarah, as a co-author, sound self-aggrandizing (which I doubt she is in reality).

Perhaps three authors was too many... Sarah, plus two journalists. Perhaps a rough draft was submitted and they published it without it going through it again. I don't know how or why such a poorly written, poorly edited, flat-out poorly executed attempt at writing a book ever made it to publication.

It's a real shame, though, because Sarah's story is worth considering, but deserving of a well-written book... not this sloppy mess. Perhaps someday, if she has the publication rights or can get them back, she can work with a REAL author, someone who knows how to frame a memoir, and write a book worth reading.

I hope so.

Very informative account of a tragic story
By Stephen Foreman
This book tells me pretty much all I need to know about this tragic story in which Sarah Brady, a woman 9 months pregnant, nearly loses her baby and, in the process of defending herself, ends up killing her attacker, Katie Smith, who was hell-bent on taking Sarah's baby by force. To its credit, the book approaches each woman as a human being learning to cope with life's hardships but in very different ways, Sarah learning to communicate and talk out her problems and express her feelings in a healthy manner and Katie keeping all those inner demons to herself and living a life of fantasy. It is very easy, once one looks below the surface, to see how what happened came to happen. Again, a very human accounting of the facts of the case, both leading up to the attack on Sarah and afterwards, with the police investigations, how some of Katie's family members chose to deal with their grief by lashing out at Sarah and accusing her of things she didn't do, how Sarah's healing process started and is continuing to this very day.

To this reader one of the most cogent truths in life is expressed near the bottom of p. 61, to quote, "You don't learn anything from the easy stuff in life; it's the tough times that teach lessons, forge character, create a sense of appreciation and make you what is called a survivor." How Sarah grew up and dealt first with poverty and then this attack and what happened afterwards surely bear out what is stated in that sentence. Yes, the triumph of the human spirit!!

Some of the legal technicalities could have been left out, and the book needed better proofreading, but to me these were minor drawbacks. This book has a lot to teach people and, in my opinion, succeeds quite well in doing so.
